ABSTRACT

In recent years, significant advancements have been made in understanding Alzheimer's disease from both neurobiological and clinical perspectives. Exploring the complex systems underlying AD has unveiled insights that could potentially revolutionize therapeutic approaches. Recent investigations have highlighted intricate interactions among genetic, molecular, and environmental factors in AD. Optimism arises from neurobiological advancements and diverse treatment options, potentially slowing or halting disease progression. Amyloid-beta plaques and tau protein tangles crucially influence AD onset and progression. Emerging treatments involve diverse strategies, such as approaches targeting multiple pathways involved in AD pathogenesis, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and synaptic dysfunction pathways. Clinical trials using humanized monoclonal antibodies, focusing on immunotherapies eliminating amyloid-beta, have shown promise. Nonpharmacological interventions such as light therapy, electrical stimulation, cognitive training, physical activity, and dietary changes have drawn attention for their potential to slow cognitive aging and enhance brain health. Precision medicine, which involves tailoring therapies to individual genetic and molecular profiles, has gained traction. Ongoing research and interdisciplinary collaboration are expected to yield more effective treatments.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Digital technologies can assist and optimize health care processes. This is increasingly the case in the musculoskeletal health domain, where digital platforms can be used to support the self-management of musculoskeletal conditions, as well as access to services. However, given a large proportion of the population with musculoskeletal conditions are older adults (aged ≥60 years), it is important to consider the acceptability of such platforms within this demographic. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore participants' opinions and perceptions on the use of digital platforms for supporting the self-management of musculoskeletal conditions within older adult (aged ≥60 years) populations and to gather their opinions on real examples. METHODS: A total of 2 focus groups (focus group 1: 6/15, 40%; focus group 2: 9/15, 60%) were conducted, in which participants answered questions about their thoughts on using digital health platforms to prevent or manage musculoskeletal conditions. Participants were further presented with 2 example scenarios, which were then discussed. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed thematically. Participants were aged ≥60 years and with or without current musculoskeletal conditions. Prior experience of using smartphone apps or other digital health platforms for musculoskeletal conditions was not required. Focus groups took place virtually using the Teams (Microsoft Corp) platform. RESULTS: A total of 6 themes were identified across both focus groups: "experiences of digital health platforms," "preference for human contact," "barriers to accessing clinical services," "individual differences and digital literacy," "trust in technology," and "features and benefits of digital health technologies." Each theme is discussed in detail based on the interview responses. The findings revealed that most participants had some existing experience with digital health platforms for preventing or managing musculoskeletal conditions. Overall, there was a lack of trust in and low expectations of quality for digital platforms for musculoskeletal health within this age group. While there was some concern about the use of digital platforms in place of in-person health consultations, several benefits were also identified. CONCLUSIONS: Results highlighted the need for better communication on the benefits of using digital platforms to support the self-management of musculoskeletal conditions, without the platforms replacing the role of the health care professionals. The concerns about which apps are of suitable quality and trustworthiness lead us to recommend raising public awareness around the role of organizations that verify and assess the quality of digital health platforms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A coordinated care system helps provide timely access to treatment for suspected acute stroke. In Northwestern Ontario (NWO), Canada, communities are widespread with several hospitals offering various diagnostic equipment and services. Thus, resources are limited, and health care providers must often transfer patients with stroke to different hospital locations to ensure the most appropriate care access within recommended time frames. However, health care providers frequently situated temporarily (locum) in NWO or providing care remotely from other areas of Ontario may lack sufficient information and experience in the region to access care for a patient with a time-sensitive condition. Suboptimal decision-making may lead to multiple transfers before definitive stroke care is obtained, resulting in poor outcomes and additional health care system costs. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a tool to inform and assist NWO health care providers in determining the best transfer options for patients with stroke to provide the most efficient care access. We aimed to develop an app using a comprehensive geomapping navigation and estimation system based on machine learning algorithms. This app uses key stroke-related timelines including the last time the patient was known to be well, patient location, treatment options, and imaging availability at different health care facilities. METHODS: Using historical data (2008-2020), an accurate prediction model using machine learning methods was developed and incorporated into a mobile app. These data contained parameters regarding air (Ornge) and land medical transport (3 services), which were preprocessed and cleaned. For cases in which Ornge air services and land ambulance medical transport were both involved in a patient transport process, data were merged and time intervals of the transport journey were determined. The data were distributed for training (35%), testing (35%), and validation (30%) of the prediction model. RESULTS: In total, 70,623 records were collected in the data set from Ornge and land medical transport services to develop a prediction model. Various learning models were analyzed; all learning models perform better than the simple average of all points in predicting output variables. The decision tree model provided more accurate results than the other models. The decision tree model performed remarkably well, with the values from testing, validation, and the model within a close range. This model was used to develop the "NWO Navigate Stroke" system. The system provides accurate results and demonstrates that a mobile app can be a significant tool for health care providers navigating stroke care in NWO, potentially impacting patient care and outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The NWO Navigate Stroke system uses a data-driven, reliable, accurate prediction model while considering all variations and is simultaneously linked to all required acute stroke management pathways and tools. It was tested using historical data, and the next step will to involve usability testing with end users.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Notopterygium incisum Ting ex H. T. Chang, also called 'Qianghuo', is a distinct umbelliferae plant in China. The rhizomes and roots of Notopterygium incisum have long been used to treat headaches, colds, analgesia and rheumatoid arthritis. It is a main traditional Chinese medicine in Qianghuo Yufeng Decoction, which was used to treat diseases such as liver and kidney insufficiency, mental paralysis and dementia. AIM OF THIS STUDY: As the most common dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD) has a complicated pathogenesis. So far, there is no effective drug to prevent its pathological process. Previous research has shown that Notopterygium incisum root extract (NRE) may inhibit the release of Aß and the activation of tau in mice with AD. However, the effect of NRE on the pathological process of neuroinflammation is still unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We determined the pro-inflammatory cytokines levels in BV2 cells exposed to LPS/Aß42 after treated with NRE. APP/PS1 and LPS-induced C57BL/6 neuroinflammatory mice were given NRE for 8 weeks and 5 days respectively to detect the pathological changes of neuroinflammation. RESULTS: The findings showed that NRE had a notable inhibitory effect on the levels of TNF-α and IL-1ß in BV2 cells induced by LPS/Aß42. The results of in vivo experiments show that following NRE treatment, there was a notable decrease in the number of activated microglia in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice as indicated by immunofluorescence results. Sholl analysis showed that microglia branches increased in NRE group, indicating that M1 microglia activation was inhibited. In the mice model injected with LPS in the tail vein, PCR and Western Blot results confirmed the anti-inflammatory effect of NRE, Nissl staining showed the protective effect of NRE on neurons, and immunofluorescence results also indicated that the activation of M1 microglia was inhibited. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that long term oral administration of NRE may inhibit neuroinflammation in the progression of AD.

ABSTRACT

Obese people are mostly unable to maintain successful weight loss after the end of a dietary change. One reason is that conventional weight reduction concepts neglect physiological hunger and satiety perception, leading to a relapse to previous eating habits on the long run. We examined the long-term efficacy of a psychological smartphone weight loss program, which avoids any dietary instructions and aims at relearning of satiety perception. Parameters of body weight alterations and psychological features, for example, satiety perception, food cravings, and emotional eating, were explored in a nonrandomized experimental study comprising 75 obese participants. Measurements occurred at baseline, two times during program application, as well as at 6- and 12-month follow-up. Participants displayed significant weight loss during the entire study period (p = .029) and showed an improved body composition at the 6-month follow-up (p = .018). These effects were associated with increased satiety perception, as well as reduced food cravings, and emotional eating habits. Notably, all improvements in measured parameters significantly sustained between the end of the program and the 12-month follow-up (p < .005 for all). Psychological relearning of satiety perception may outclass dietary approaches in terms of long-term efficiency.

BACKGROUND: With the advent of the smart phone era, managing blood glucose at home through apps will become more common for older individuals with diabetes. Adult children play important roles in glucose management of older parents. Few studies have explored how adult children really feel about engaging in the glucose management of their older parents with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) through mobile apps. This study provides insights into the role perceptions and experiences of adult children of older parents with T2DM participating in glucose management through mobile apps. METHODS: In this qualitative study, 16 adult children of older parents with T2DM, who had used mobile apps to manage blood glucose for 6 months, were recruited through purposive sampling. Semi-structured, in-depth, face-to-face interviews to explore their role perceptions and experiences in remotely managing their older parents' blood glucose were conducted. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) were followed to ensure rigor in the study. The data collected were analyzed by applying Colaizzi's seven-step qualitative analysis method. RESULTS: Six themes and eight sub-themes were identified in this study. Adult children's perceived roles in glucose management of older parents with T2DM through mobile apps could be categorized into four themes: health decision-maker, remote supervisor, health educator and emotional supporter. The experiences of participation could be categorized into two themes: facilitators to participation and barriers to participation. CONCLUSION: Some barriers existed for adult children of older parents with T2DM participating in glucose management through mobile apps; however, the findings of this study were generally positive. It was beneficial and feasible for adult children to co-manage the blood glucose of older parents. Co-managing blood glucose levels in older parents with T2DM can enhance both adherence rates and confidence in managing blood glucose effectively.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Addressing the negative impact of substance use disorders (SUDs) on individuals, families, and communities is a public health priority. Most treatments and interventions require engagement with a healthcare provider or someone who can offer recovery support. The need for interventions that facilitate self-management of relapse triggers at the moment they occur is also critical. Our study aimed to explore the user experience of individuals using a just-in-time smartphone episodic resonance breathing (eRPB) intervention to address stress, anxiety, and drug cravings. METHODS: We conducted an 8-week pilot study of the eRPB with 30 individuals in recovery from SUD. Data on 3 indicators of user experience-acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility-were collected using survey questions (n = 30) and semi-structured interviews (n = 11). We performed univariate analysis on the survey data and deductive thematic analysis on the qualitative data. RESULTS: A majority of the survey respondents agreed that the application (app) was acceptable (> 77%), appropriate (> 82%), and feasible (> 89%). Several interview participants stated that the app helped them relax and manage stress and cravings and expressed appreciation for the simplicity of its design. Participants also reported barriers to feasibility (such as forgetting to use the app) and recommendations for improvement (such as the addition of motivational messages). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that individuals in recovery from SUD had highly positive experiences with the eRPB app. A positive user experience may improve adherence to the intervention and, ultimately, the self-management of stress, anxiety, and craving relapse triggers.

ABSTRACT

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease associated with aging, characterized by progressive cognitive impairment and memory loss. However, treatments that delay AD progression or improve its symptoms remain limited. The aim of the present study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of omaveloxolone (Omav) on AD and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Thirty-week-old APP/PS1 mice were selected as an experimental model of AD. The spatial learning and memory abilities were tested using the Morris water maze. Amyloid-beta (Aß) deposition in the brains was measured using immunohistochemistry. Network pharmacological analyses and molecular docking were conducted to gain insights into the therapeutic mechanisms of Omav. Finally, validation analyses were conducted to detect changes in the associated pathways and proteins. Our finding revealed that Omav markedly rescued cognitive dysfunction and reduced Aß deposition in the brains of APP/PS1 mice. Network pharmacological analysis identified 112 intersecting genes, with CASP3 and MTOR emerging as the key targets. In vivo validation experiments indicated that Omav attenuated neuronal apoptosis by regulating apoptotic proteins, including caspase 3, Bax, and Bcl-2. Moreover, Omav suppressed neuroinflammation and induced autophagy by inhibiting the phosphorylation of mTOR. These findings highlight the therapeutic efficacy of Omav in AD and that its neuroprotective effects were associated with inhibiting neuronal apoptosis and regulating neuroinflammation.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive decline stemming from the accumulation of beta-amyloid (Aß) plaques and the propagation of tau pathology through synapses. Exosomes, crucial mediators in neuronal development, maintenance, and intercellular communication, have gained attention in AD research. Yet, the molecular mechanisms involving exosomal miRNAs in AD remain elusive. In this study, we treated APPswe/PSEN1dE9 transgenic (APP/PS1) mice, a model for AD, with either vehicle (ADNS) or fasudil (ADF), while C57BL/6 (control) mice received vehicle (WT). Cognitive function was evaluated using the Y-maze test, and AD pathology was confirmed through immunostaining and western blot analysis of Aß plaques and phosphorylated tau. Exosomal RNAs were extracted, sequenced, and analyzed from each mouse group. Our findings revealed that fasudil treatment improved cognitive function in AD mice, as evidenced by increased spontaneous alternation in the Y-maze test and reduced Aß plaque load and phosphorylated tau protein expression in the hippocampus. Analysis of exosomal miRNAs identified three miRNAs (mmu-let-7i-5p, mmu-miR-19a-3p, mmu-miR-451a) common to both ADNS vs ADF and WT vs ADNS groups. Utilizing miRTarBase software, we predicted and analyzed target genes associated with these miRNAs. Gene ontology (GO) annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis of miRNA target genes indicated that mmu-miR-19a-3p and mmu-miR-451a are implicated in signal transduction, immune response, cellular communication, and nervous system pathways. Specifically, mmu-miR-19a-3p targeted genes involved in the sphingolipid signaling pathway, such as Pten and Tnf, while mmu-miR-451a targeted Nsmaf, Gnai3, and Akt3. Moreover, mmu-miR-451a targeted Myc in signaling pathways regulating the pluripotency of stem cells. In conclusion, fasudil treatment enhanced cognitive function by modulating exosomal MicroRNAs, particularly mmu-miR-451a and mmu-miR-19a-3p. These miRNAs hold promise as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for novel AD treatments.

Menopausal loss of neuroprotective estrogen is thought to contribute to the sex differences in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Activation of estrogen receptor beta (ERß) can be clinically relevant since it avoids the negative systemic effects of ERα activation. However, very few studies have explored ERß-mediated neuroprotection in AD, and no information on its contribution to the sex differences in AD exists. In the present study we specifically explored the role of ERß in mediating sex-specific protection against AD pathology in the clinically relevant App NL-G-F knock-in mouse model of amyloidosis, and if surgical menopause (ovariectomy) modulates pathology in this model. We treated male and female App NL-G-F mice with the selective ERß agonist LY500307 and subset of the females was ovariectomized prior to treatment. Memory performance was assessed and a battery of biochemical assays were used to evaluate amyloid pathology and neuroinflammation. Primary microglial cultures from male and female wild-type and ERß-knockout mice were used to assess ERß's effect on microglial activation and phagocytosis. We find that ERß activation protects against amyloid pathology and cognitive decline in male and female App NL-G-F mice. Ovariectomy increased soluble amyloid beta (Aß) in cortex and insoluble Aß in hippocampus, but had otherwise limited effects on pathology. We further identify that ERß does not alter APP processing, but rather exerts its protection through amyloid scavenging that at least in part is mediated via microglia in a sex-specific manner. Combined, we provide new understanding to the sex differences in AD by demonstrating that ERß protects against AD pathology differently in males and females, warranting reassessment of ERß in combating AD.

Introduction: Electronic health (e-Health) modalities effectively address healthcare access limitations; however, there are limited data on their adoption by Hispanic/Latina women who are disproportionally affected by health disparities. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study by disseminating an anonymous electronic questionnaire via social media to assess the perception of Hispanic/Latina women of reproductive age regarding facilitators and barriers for using e-Health modalities, including telemedicine and mobile apps, to monitor gynecologic health. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 351 Hispanic/Latina participants with high levels (98.3%) of advanced technological expertise. Current use of a gynecologic mobile app was reported by 63.8%, primarily for menstruation (85.1%) and ovulation (46.3%) tracking. While only 17.6% of participants were offered the option of a gynecologic consultation via telemedicine, the majority (90.5%) would agree to one. Higher education and advanced technological expertise correlated with acceptance of telemedicine for gynecological consults. Being younger (<29 y/o), a student, not having a preferred gynecologist and having a lower income significantly correlated with gynecologic mobile app acceptability. Conclusions: We showed that e-Health modalities are highly acceptable for Hispanic/Latina women of reproductive age to facilitate gynecological care and documented factors that are significantly associated with e-Health acceptability. These findings are relevant to public health emergencies that cause access to care limitations disproportionally affecting this already underserved population.

Dating apps are spaces where masculinities are communicated digitally, affecting inequalities around gender expressions. This study aims to identify the masculinities communicated within Grindr tourism interactions in Tel Aviv and analyze how masculinities shape relations among international tourists and locals. Methods consist of interviews and audio diaries with nineteen tourist, local, and immigrant Grindr users in Tel Aviv. Theories of affordances, hegemonic masculinities, and relational sociology are used to analyze the data. In discussion of the results, the concept of mutual exoticization is put forth to interpret the social dynamics valued within Grindr tourism interactions, thereby revealing oppositional fantasies tied to nationalities and masculinities. The study also explores ethnicity's association with social and erotic capital in digital circulations of a localized Mizrahi masculinity. Findings reveal that while hegemonic masculinities are circulated on Grindr, resistance is also a part of Grindr tourism relations around masculinities. This research concludes by shedding light on masculinity inequalities within digital spaces where different nationalities co-congregate, revealing everyday negotiations of gender regimes. Grindr is the site of both reproduction of and resistance to social inequalities around masculinities.

Objectives: This study explored the perceived impact of a smartphone app on awareness, knowledge, attitudes, help-seeking, behavior change, and intention to change an abnormal posture of the neck while using smartphones among undergraduates addicted to smartphone use. Patients and methods: This descriptive survey involved smartphone-addicted undergraduates recruited between February 2022 and July 2022. The self-administered questionnaires used for gathering the data were a smartphone addiction survey and a mobile app rating scale on app-specific query assessing changes in awareness, knowledge, attitude, intention to change, health-seeking, and behavior change. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 316 participants (218 females, 98 males; mean: 20.7±2.6 years; range, 16 to 35 years). One hundred forty-two (44.9%) of the respondents strongly agreed that the app improved awareness, while 143 (45.3%) strongly agreed that the app improved knowledge about the significance of addressing abnormal posture of the neck while using smartphones. One hundred thirty-two (41.8%) were of the opinion that the app could change participant attitudes, and 135 (42.7%) agreed that the app could increase intentions toward improving abnormal posture of the neck. One hundred eighteen (37.3%) participants agreed that the app could promote help-seeking for abnormal posture of the neck. Respondents' age had a negative weak correlation with intention to treat (r=-0.191, p=0.001) and help-seeking (r=-0.199, p=0.0001). Conclusion: Most of the respondents in this study agreed that the CerviTech app could increase awareness, knowledge, attitude, intention to change, help-seeking, and behavior change of abnormal posture of the neck while using smartphones, with significant impact according to the age of the respondents regarding the intention to change and help-seeking behavior.

Introduction: Oral hygiene instruction (OHI) is essential during periodontitis treatment. Various OHI approaches have been explored, including mobile apps. Objective: To evaluate the mobile app-based OHI's effect on periodontitis management by analyzing clinical parameters and subgingival microbiota. Methods: Forty-four periodontitis patients were randomly assigned into two groups. The test group (n = 22) received scaling and root planing (SRP), OHI, and mobile app-based OHI, whereas the control group (n = 22) received SRP and OHI. Full mouth plaque score (FMPS), bleeding on probing (BOP) and probing pocket depth at the sampling sites (site-PPD) were assessed at baseline, one- and three-month visits. The 16S rRNA next-generation sequencing (NGS) was used to analyze subgingival plaque samples. Results: Significant reduction in FMPS, BOP, and site-PPD at one- and three-month visits compared to baseline (p < 0.001) with no significant differences across groups (p > 0.05). In test groups, intra-group analysis showed better improvement in BOP and site-PPD (p < 0.05) than control. The diversity and composition of subgingival microbiota did not differ between groups or timepoints (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Mobile app-based OHI showed no superior effects on improving clinical parameters and subgingival microbiota compared to conventional OHI. Further investigation into its long-term impact on periodontitis treatment is needed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress symptoms are present and persistent among many patients who survive a critical illness like COVID-19. RESEARCH QUESTION: Could a self-directed mobile app-delivered mindfulness intervention be feasibly and rapidly implemented within a clinical trials network to reduce distress symptoms? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted between January 2021 and May 2022 at 29 US sites and included survivors of hospitalization due to COVID-19-related illness with elevated symptoms of depression at discharge. Participants were randomized to intervention or usual care control. The intervention consisted of four themed weeks of daily audio, video, and text content. All study procedures were virtual. The primary outcome was depression symptoms assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 at 3 months. Secondary outcomes included anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale), quality of life (EQ-5D), and adherence. We used general linear models to estimate treatment arm differences in outcomes over time. RESULTS: Among 56 randomized participants (mean age ± SD, 51.0 ± 13.2 years; 38 female [67.9%]; 14 Black participants [25%]), 45 (intervention: n = 23 [79%]; control: n = 22 [81%]) were retained at 6 months. There was no difference in mean improvement between intervention and control participants at 3 months in Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (-0.5 vs 0.1), Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (-0.3 vs 0.1), or EQ-5D (-0.03 vs 0.02) scores, respectively; 6-month results were similar. Only 15 participants (51.7%) initiated the intervention, whereas the mean number ± SD of the 56 prescribed intervention activities completed was 12.0 ± 15.2. Regulatory approvals delayed trial initiation by nearly a year. INTERPRETATION: Among survivors of COVID-19 hospitalization with elevated psychological distress symptoms, a self-directed mobile app-based mindfulness intervention had poor adherence. Future psychological distress interventions mobilized at broad scale should focus efforts on patient engagement and regulatory simplification to enhance success. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although digital educational resources are used worldwide to educate new parents, the impact of digital resources tailored specifically to women's needs on breastfeeding practices is not well explored. AIM: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using a women-centred Web-Based Breastfeeding Educational Resource (WEBBER) in increasing the rate of exclusive breastfeeding at one month after birth. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study with before and after intervention was conducted in one metropolitan hospital in Saudi Arabia. Participants were primiparous women (n=290) aged 18 or above who intended to breastfeed. The intervention involved introducing the WEBBER to pregnant women and reinforcing its uses as a routine breastfeeding educational resource. Women's characteristics and infant feeding data were collected at one month after birth via an online survey. FINDINGS: The rate of exclusive breastfeeding at one month postpartum among the women who received the WEBBER intervention was nearly three times higher compared to the women prior to the introduction of the intervention (66 % vs. 26 %, p-value <.001). Furthermore, other predictors of exclusive breastfeeding at one month were the mother being unemployed, the baby not receiving infant formula in the hospital, and the mother having postnatal intention to continue breastfeeding for 6 months or more. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Using WEBBER as a routine breastfeeding educational resource increased the rate of exclusive breastfeeding one month after birth. Embedding woman-centred digital resources into routine breastfeeding education is an effective intervention for women in Saudi Arabia.

ABSTRACT

Background  Anemia is a severe public health problem in India affecting more than half of the population. To reduce its burden on the population, the Government of India under the Anemia Mukt Bharat program has adopted a monitoring strategy for the diagnosis and treatment of anemia. Point-of-care testing (POCT) devices play a pivotal role in testing hemoglobin at a community level where sophisticated laboratory instruments are not available. The majority of the currently available POCT devices are invasive in nature which have their own limitations. A non-invasive method of hemoglobin estimation will address many of the limitations of an invasive POCT instrument, which will further improve people's acceptability for hemoglobin testing. The Non-Invasive Anemia Detection App (NiADA) (Monere AI Private Limited, Kolkata, West Bengal, India), a non-invasive POCT application, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the hemoglobin level from lower eyelid images. This real-time, point-of-care, low-cost solution uses a custom computer vision deep-learning algorithm to determine blood hemoglobin value.  Method  The study validates an AI-based smartphone application NiADA against laboratory hemoglobin estimation and a widely used point-of-care hemoglobin estimation instrument (HemoCue Hb 301; HemoCue AB, Angelholm, Skane County, Sweden). The study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Eastern India and recruited a total of 556 participants. These included 58 pediatric patients, 51 pregnant women, 214 adult females, and 224 adult males. Statistical analysis was performed using Python (Python Software Foundation, Wilmington, Delaware, United States). A p-value of < 0.05 was taken to be significant.  Result  The mean difference observed between NiADA and laboratory-estimated hemoglobin values came out to be -0.29 g/dL and -0.89 g/dL for adult females and males respectively, and 0.61 g/dL for pregnant women and -0.69g/dL for the pediatric population. The limits of agreement for NiADA were narrow at 2.77 to -2.18 g/dL for adult females, 3.76 to -1.96 g/dL for adult males, 1.89 to -3.29 g/dL for pregnant women, and 3.28 to -2.08 g/dL for the pediatric population. The sensitivity and specificity of the NiADA application against the laboratory estimation method were 75.8% and 53.8% for adult females, 70.0% and 48.3% for adult males, 23.8% and 90% for pregnant females, and 75% and 57% for the pediatric population.  Conclusion  As a non-invasive application, NiADA's performance is satisfactory and comparable with minimally invasive tools like HemoCue Hb 301 and other POCT devices.

ABSTRACT

Meta-analyses have become indispensable in the behavioral sciences, combining and summarizing data from multiple studies. While they offer many advantages (e.g., increased power, higher generality, and resolving conflicting findings), they currently only provide a snapshot at a given point. In active research areas, frequent meta-analytic updates are necessary to incorporate new evidence. We propose guidelines for live, dynamic meta-analyses and introduce an accessible tool using the R environment. Our app, powered by the Shiny package, enables the meta-analyst to integrate evidence interactively as an update of an existing meta-analysis or from scratch (i.e., a new meta-analysis). By embracing dynamic meta-analyses and leveraging modern tools, researchers can ensure up-to-date meta-analyses in their respective fields.

ABSTRACT

The delivery market in Republic of Korea has experienced significant growth, leading to a surge in motorcycle-related accidents. However, there is a lack of comprehensive data collection systems for motorcycle safety management. This study focused on designing and implementing a foundational data collection system to monitor and evaluate motorcycle driving behavior. To achieve this, eleven risky behaviors were defined, identified using image-based, GIS-based, and inertial-sensor-based methods. A motorcycle-mounted sensing device was installed to assess driving, with drivers reviewing their patterns through an app and all data monitored via a web interface. The system was applied and tested using a testbed. This study is significant as it successfully conducted foundational data collection for motorcycle safety management and designed and implemented a system for monitoring and evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a frequent disease in women of reproductive age in which the endometrium occurs outside the uterine cavity. Multimodal treatment approaches are necessary due to loss of quality of life and the chronic nature of the disease. Digital health applications (DiGa) are becoming increasingly important. This research project investigates how a healthcare app can influence the subjective experience of illness in patients with endometriosis. METHODS: Empiric data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was carried out using qualitative focussed interview analysis. Reliability was ensured by joint interdisciplinary and interprofessional evaluation of the interviews by experts and those affected. RESULTS: Ten patients with endometriosis and the prescribed healthcare app Endo-App© were examined. Categories were defined from the superordinate categories "Factors influencing the experience of illness" and "Evaluation of the app". The app provided reliable information, promoted self-efficacy through exercises and strengthened the perception of the individuality of the illness. It helped to minimise nocebo effects from internet research and enabled a positive change of perspective. Patients criticised the time required for data input and had data protection concerns. The educational elements were often seen as redundant. Some patients only used the app briefly, or not at all. CONCLUSION: Once a DiGa has been prescribed, it may be useful to explain its use on an outpatient basis and validate regular use. Blind re-prescribing of DiGas should be avoided. Younger patients with a recent diagnosis or patients following rehabilitation may benefit more from prescribing.
