ABSTRACT

Purpose: Sexual minority young adults are at increased risk for hazardous drinking and alcohol use disorder compared to heterosexual adults. Heterosexism-based stressors contribute and often explain inequities in alcohol outcomes. However, the extant research primarily relies on correlational designs, and often neglects the importance of alcohol craving, despite its foundational role in addiction. Leveraging a novel experimental mood induction paradigm, this study examined the effects of exposure to vicarious heterosexism-based stress on alcohol craving and negative affect among sexual minority young adults who drink heavily. We also examined its effects on cannabis and nicotine craving among participants who used cannabis and nicotine, respectively. Lastly, we examined moderating factors that could influence the impact of exposure to heterosexism-based stress on alcohol craving. Methods: Participants were 101 heavy drinking sexual minority young adults, ages 20-35 (M = 26.46 years old; SD = 3.49), recruited from the community (51.5% female sex assigned at birth; 76.3% cisgender; 51.5% plurisexual; and 42.6% racial and ethnic minorities). They completed three mood induction trials counterbalanced over three visits on different days: heterosexism stress, general stress, and neutral. Structured interviews assessed criteria for DSM-5 alcohol use disorder (AUD) and substance use, and self-report measures assessed lifetime traumatic stressors. Results: Most participants met criteria for past-year AUD (74.7%). Exposure to heterosexism stress produced more negative affect and substance craving than the neutral mood induction, even while controlling for demographic variables and lifetime exposure to traumatic and heterosexism stressors. Exposure to heterosexism-based stress had large effects on alcohol craving among participants who had greater drinking to cope motives and heterosexism-specific rejection sensitivity, whereas the effects were small for those who had lower drinking to cope motives and heterosexism-specific rejection sensitivity. Demographic, lifetime stress, prior alcohol use, and AUD symptom severity variables were not significant moderators. Greater substance craving induced by heterosexism-based stress in the laboratory was associated with greater recent and current substance use. Conclusions: This study findings show that vicarious exposure to heterosexism elicits negative mood and alcohol, cannabis, and nicotine craving among sexual minority young adults who engaged in heavy drinking. The effects for alcohol craving were largest among those who endorse high levels of drinking to cope motives and heterosexism-based rejection sensitivity. These findings have implications for oppression-based stress and motivational models of addiction.

PURPOSE: Emotional eating during negative emotions might underlie disordered eating behavior (i.e., binge eating and food restriction). Positive emotions, by contrast, seem to promote healthier eating behavior. Naturalistic research on the links between emotions and eating across individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge-purge anorexia nervosa (AN-BP), and restrictive anorexia nervosa (AN-R) is, however, lacking. METHODS: Individuals without eating disorders (comparison group, CG, n = 85), and patients with BED (n = 41), BN (n = 50), AN-BP (n = 26), and AN-R (n = 29) participated in an ecological momentary assessment study. Six daily notifications over eight days prompted ratings of momentary food craving and emotional states differing in valence and arousal. RESULTS: Results supported specific emotion-food-craving patterns in each group. Compared to the CG, arousing negative emotions and higher cravings co-occurred in patients with BN. In patients with AN-BP (at trend level also in patients with AN-R) less arousing negative emotions and lower cravings co-occurred. In patients with AN, positive emotions and higher cravings co-occurred whereas in patients with BED less arousing positive emotions and lower cravings co-occurred. CONCLUSION: The found emotion-craving associations may underlie group-specific (dys-)functional eating behaviors, i.e., binge eating and food restriction during negative emotions in patients with BN and AN, and normalized appetitive responses during positive emotions in patients with BED and AN. Therapeutic efforts could target arousing negative emotions in patients with BN, and less arousing negative emotions in patients with AN. Positive emotions could be used in a salutogenetic approach in patients with BED and AN.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, three million deaths each year are reported due to the harmful use of alcohol. To date, only a few drugs have been approved for the treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of sodium oxybate (SMO) treatment in patients with AUD. METHODS: We followed the PRISMA statement guidelines and searched PubMed and ISI Web of Science to retrieve the studies of interest. In total, 13 studies on long-term (>12 weeks) SMO administra- tion in patients with AUD were included in this systematic review, and 7 were included in the meta- analysis. RESULTS: Overall, the abstinence rate after 12 weeks of treatment was similar in the SMO and placebo groups, while it was significantly in favour of SMO compared to Naltrexone (NTX). The completion rate was similar in all three conditions. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) levels favoured SMO over NTX, while Alcohol Craving Scale (ACS) scores did not favour SMO. The incidence of adverse reactions varied widely between studies. CONCLUSION: SMO in the chronic treatment of patients with AUD showed no superiority to placebo in our analysis of published RCTs, although many observational studies reported its beneficial effect in the long term. On the contrary, SMO was superior to NTX treatment on abstinence. The rate of study completion was similar in the three groups. Safety was not an issue in any of the studies included. Further studies are needed to better assess SMO efficacy and safety in the long term.

We present here four cases of desiderosmia in diagnosed patients of major depressive disorder without iron deficiency, where treatment of depression was associated with improvement in abnormal craving.

ABSTRACT

A middle-aged woman presented with history of fatigue, low mood, swelling of limbs, and facial puffiness. On detailed history taking, she also complained of salt craving, secondary amenorrhea, and loss of libido for almost a decade. Investigations revealed pan-hypopituitarism. She was started on appropriate hormonal therapy which saw a rapid resolution of symptoms within 2 weeks. Sheehan's syndrome may have an acute presentation or chronic. The symptoms may be subtle like fatigue or overt like hypotension and syncope. A high degree of suspicion of Sheehan's syndrome is essential for its timely management, and goes a long way in preserving the quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Australia has one of the highest rates in the world of the use of the crystalline form of methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant that is often associated with a chronic, relapsing dependency. Methamphetamine use is associated with both acquisitive and violent offending, which cause substantial personal and societal costs. Whilst the short-term euphoria and stimulation provide a positive reinforcement to methamphetamine use, the aversive states of withdrawing from methamphetamine and the associated craving, which may last up to five weeks into abstinence, underlie the negative reinforcement to continued methamphetamine use. Although many methamphetamine-dependent users experience high levels of psychological distress, it is likely that less than half engage with treatment or support services, and current intervention and treatment programmes have high discontinuation rates. Stigma and discrimination, even from paramedics and health clinicians, are prominent barriers to methamphetamine-dependent users accessing treatment in Australia.

Purpose: This study aims to adapt and verify the psychometric properties of the Craving for Internet Gaming Scale (CIGS) in a Polish sample. Craving, although observed as significantly associated with Internet Gaming Disorder, is not currently included in its diagnostic criteria. This research addresses the need for scales to measure craving in this particular context. Methods: The research involved a sample of 575 participants. Psychometric analysis, including confirmatory factor analysis, was conducted to assess the CIGS' reliability and validity. Additional scales, such as the Game Transfer Phenomena Scale, Motives for Online Gaming Questionnaire, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales, were used for concurrent validity analysis. Results: The study results demonstrate the excellent psychometric properties of the Polish adaptation of the CIGS. It showed high reliability in terms of internal consistency and provided evidence for construct validity. Furthermore, it exhibited a positive correlation with various scales associated with problematic video game use and gaming addiction, while also showing a moderate negative correlation with self-control. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the CIGS retains its psychometric properties in different cultures, making it a valuable instrument for comprehending craving within the context of Internet gaming disorder. Future research should focus on the adaptation of the CIGS to various cultural settings and the exploration of potential intergroup differences.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunctional decision-making and intense craving represent pivotal aspects across all addictive behaviors, notably evident in gambling addiction where these factors significantly shape chasing behavior-continuing gambling to recoup losses-indicative of problematic gambling. This study explores the correlation between chasing behavior, craving, affective decision-making, decision-making styles, and gambling severity among habitual Italian gamblers. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-six participants from diverse gambling venues completed assessments including the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), the General Decision-Making Style (GDMS), the Gambling Craving Scale (GACS), and a computerized task to measure chasing behavior. Participants were randomly assigned to Control and Loss chasing conditions. RESULTS: Regression analyses revealed craving as a predictor of chasing behavior. Interestingly, individuals with a dependent decision-making style exhibited lower tendencies to chase. While IGT performance correlates with chasing frequency, it is not associated with the decision to continue or cease gambling. Intriguingly, gambling severity (SOGS total score) did not feature in the final models of both regression analyses. DISCUSSION: These findings emphasize the significant role of craving in driving chasing behavior. Additionally, this study introduces, for the first time, the idea that a dependent decision-making style could potentially serve as a safeguard against chasing proneness. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests a fundamental dichotomy between chasers and nonchasers among gamblers, irrespective of gambling severity. This distinction could be instrumental in tailoring more effective intervention strategies for gambling disorder treatment.

ABSTRACT

Craving is considered one of the defining characteristics for alcohol or substance use disorders. There is no consensus on the underlying processes of craving, although multiple models exist. Craving is a very individualistic symptom and has to be self-reported. Several instruments have been developed to measure craving, without a recognized gold standard. The patient's perspective appears critical to determine the relevance of the numerous existing tools. We assessed the contribution of patients to the development of these instruments. We performed a systematic review of instruments measuring alcohol craving published from 2012 to 2023 from three databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, and Embase) in addition to those identified in a previous review by Kavanagh et al. from 1990 to 2012. We included all articles related to the development or validation of instruments for the assessment of alcohol craving. We identified and included in this review the corresponding instruments. Articles translating existing instruments without validation or on single-item instruments were excluded. We analyzed the articles in accordance with COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) recommendations to assess patient involvement in the creation of patient-reported outcome measures (PROM). Two key aspects were investigated: (1) the general design, encompassing the quality of construct description, identification of elements pertinent to a PROM, particularly the inclusion of concepts provided by patients, and (2) the quality of cognitive interviews (when conducted), to evaluate the comprehensiveness and comprehensibility of the PROM. We included 22 articles identifying 16 instruments for measuring alcohol craving. Patients only contributed to item development for one instrument and its short version (QAU and AUQ). None of the instruments met all of the developmental quality criteria, with 14 classed as "inadequate" and two as "doubtful." The current instruments measuring alcohol craving were developed with poor patient contribution, although most articles did not adequately report patient involvement. Patients' perspectives on craving should be explored for future patient-centered approach.

ABSTRACT

Research designed to establish alcohol and other drug (AOD) mechanisms of behavioral change (MOBC) has centered on what variables mediate the relation between AOD treatment and outcomes. The purpose of this paper was to review this research evidence to identify empirically supported mediators of alcohol and other drug use and related outcomes and then to evaluate their potential as being AOD treatment MOBC. The first phase was a systematic review of reviews (2008-2023) to identify the variables with the strongest empirical support as mediators of AOD treatment effects. Eligible reviews focused on AOD treatment modalities, included empirically tested mediators, and targeted adult samples. The second phase was a systematic review of empirical studies (1990-2023) testing the hypothesis that variables identified in phase one were AOD treatment mediators/mechanisms and then evaluating each eligible stage two study according to the Kazdin and Nock (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 44, 1116) criteria. Eligible articles included empirical studies with adult samples attending AOD treatment and empirically tested one of the three treatment mechanisms as a mediator of an AOD-related outcome. Databases were searched in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. This systematic review was not preregistered. The first review of 11 eligible review articles identified self-efficacy, social support, and craving as having the strongest empirical support. The second review captured 48 individual studies. An evaluation of each of these studies by the Kazdin and Nock criteria suggested that they likely are MOBC and therefore are ready for implementation. The implementation of self-efficacy, social support, and craving into clinical practice and training is warranted. Six directions for future research to solidify and generalize empirical support for the case that self-efficacy, social support, and craving are MOBC are presented, as are five implications for clinical practice and training.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies have previously demonstrated a prospective influence of craving on substance use in the following hours. Conceptualizing substance use as a dynamic system of causal elements could provide valuable insights into the interaction of craving with other symptoms in the process of relapse. The aim of this study was to improve the understanding of these daily life dynamic inter-relationships by applying dynamic networks analyses to EMA data sets. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Secondary analyses were conducted on time-series data from two 2-week EMA studies. Data were collected in French outpatient addiction treatment centres. A total of 211 outpatients beginning treatment for alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, stimulants and opiate addiction took part. MEASUREMENTS: Using mobile technologies, participants were questioned four times per day relative to substance use, craving, exposure to cues, mood, self-efficacy and pharmacological addiction treatment use. Multi-level vector auto-regression models were used to explore contemporaneous, temporal and between-subjects networks. FINDINGS: Among the 8260 daily evaluations, the temporal network model, which depicts the lagged associations of symptoms within participants, demonstrated a unidirectional association between craving intensity at one time (T0) and primary substance use at the next assessment (T1, r = 0.1), after controlling for the effect of all other variables. A greater self-efficacy at T0 was associated with fewer cues (r = -0.04), less craving (r = -0.1) and less substance use at T1 (r = -0.07), and craving presented a negative feedback loop with self-efficacy (r = -0.09). CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic network analyses showed that, among outpatients beginning treatment for addiction, high craving, together with low self-efficacy, appear to predict substance use more strongly than low mood or high exposure to cues.

ABSTRACT

Background: Anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) dependence affects approximately 30% of people who use AAS. Presently, measures to assess and diagnose AAS dependence are adapted from scales specific to other forms of drug misuse (e.g., alcohol), containing issues with internal consistency and breadth of construct capture. Additionally, there are no measures available to assess AAS craving, which represents a potentially important coeval factor to AAS dependence. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and provide evidence of validity for measures of AAS dependence and AAS craving. Methods: Data were collected from male and female strength athletes who use AAS across two samples (n sample 1 = 206; n sample 2 = 224). Sample 1 completed the new measures alongside instruments assessing theoretically related constructs (Doping Moral Disengagement, Doping Self-Regulatory Efficacy Scale, craving items from the Wisconsin Smoking Withdrawal Scale, AAS adapted Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorder 4th Edition), whereas Sample 2 completed the new instruments. Results: Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) with Sample 1 data were used to finalize the item sets for both measures and determine the factorial structures of the AAS Dependence Scale (AASDS) and AAS Craving Scale (AASCS). The AASDS consists of 15-items across five first-order factors that are represented by one second-order factor. The AASCS consists of 16-items across four first-order factors that are represented by one second-order factor. Evidence supporting the concurrent, convergent and discriminant validity of scores obtained with both scales was provided through their associations with the theoretically related variables. CFA with the data from Sample 2 confirmed the factor structures for both scales. Conclusion: The AASDS and AASCS represent valid and reliable measures of AAS dependence and AAS craving for use in research with strength athletes who use AAS.

ABSTRACT

Automated delivery of therapy in virtual reality (VR) has the potential to be used for smoking cessation. Most obviously, it could be used to practise and establish alternative reactions to smoking cues. The first step in treatment development is to show that VR environments can trigger sufficient cravings in smokers. We evaluated a new VR public house outdoor scenario with 100 individuals who smoked daily. Participants were randomly assigned to the VR scenario with smoking cues or a neutral experience in VR. The VR experiences were presented in a standalone VR headset. Before and after VR, we collected self-reported craving scores for cigarettes and alcohol using the Tobacco Craving Questionnaire (TCQ) and visual analogue scales (VAS). Physiological data were also collected. Compared to the neutral condition, exposure to the smoking cues led to a large increase in craving for a cigarette (TCQ ß = 11.44, p < 0.0001, Cohen's d = 1.10) and also a moderate increase in craving for alcohol ( ß = 0.7 , p = 0.017 , d = 0.50 ) . There were no significant physiological differences between the two conditions. These results provide good evidence that VR experiences can elicit strong craving for cigarettes. The programming can be part of developing a new VR cognitive therapy to help people reduce smoking.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are the most effective interventions for this condition, yet many patients discontinue treatment. Though adjunct psychosocial treatments are recommended to increase retention and reduce relapse, the scarcity of trained providers hinders access to and utilization of evidence-based interventions. We conducted a Phase 1 study to assess the feasibility of a virtual reality-delivered Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE-VR) intervention for patients receiving MOUD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients receiving buprenorphine or methadone for OUD (N = 34) were scheduled for 8 weekly sessions of MORE-VR. Enrollment and retention rates were analyzed. Participants reported on the usability and acceptability of MORE-VR, opioid use, and craving and affect before and after each VR session. Heart rate was monitored during one session of MORE-VR. RESULTS: Twenty-three participants completed four or more MORE-VR sessions (minimum recommended intervention dose). Participants reported high usability and acceptability of MORE-VR, which had an excellent safety profile. Illicit opioid use decreased significantly from pre- to post-treatment (F = 4.44, p=.04). We observed a significant within-session decrease in opioid craving (F = 39.3, p<.001) and negative affect (F = 36.3, p<.001), and a significant within-session increase in positive affect (F = 23.6, p<.001). Heart rate shifted during cue-exposure and mindfulness practices (F = 6.79, p<.001). CONCLUSIONS: High retention, usability and acceptability rates and low adverse events demonstrated that MORE-VR is a feasible, engaging, and safe intervention. Our findings show that MORE-VR can be delivered as an adjunctive intervention to MOUD and suggest that MORE-VR may improve OUD treatment outcomes and modulate autonomic responses. MORE-VR is a digital therapeutic that uses Virtual Reality to deliver an 8-week mindfulness-based intervention for opioid use disorder treatment.Patients with OUD reported high completion rates, usability and acceptability.In participants receiving MORE-VR as an adjunct to MOUD, reduced craving and opioid use was reported over time.

INTRODUCTION: Real-time functional magnetic resonance based-neurofeedback (fMRI-neurofeedback) is a neuromodulation tool where individuals self-modulate brain function based on real-time feedback of their brain activity. fMRI-neurofeedback has been used to target brain dysfunction in substance use disorders (SUDs) and to reduce craving, but a systematic synthesis of up-to-date literature is lacking. METHOD: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review of all the literature that examined the effects of fMRI-neurofeedback on individuals with regular psychoactive substance use (PROSPERO pre-registration = CRD42023401137). RESULTS: The literature included 16 studies comprising 446 participants with SUDs involving alcohol, tobacco, and cocaine. There is consistent between-condition (e.g., fMRI-neurofeedback versus control), less consistent pre-to-post fMRI-neurofeedback, and little intervention-by-time effects on brain function in prefrontal-striatal regions and craving. CONCLUSION: The evidence for changes in brain function/craving was early and inconsistent. More rigorous experiments including repeated measure designs with placebo control conditions, are required to confirm the efficacy of fMRI-neurofeedback in reducing brain alterations and craving in SUDs.

Imaginal retraining (IR) is an emerging intervention technique in which people imagine avoidance behaviors towards imagined foods or other substances, such as throwing them away. Although IR shows promise in reducing initial craving for a range of substances, including alcohol and tobacco, effects appear less robust for craving for energy-dense foods. This raises the question of how IR for food craving can be improved. Here, we address this question informed by emerging findings from IR dismantling studies and the field of regular cognitive bias modification training paradigms. Based on current insights, we suggest the most optimal 'craving-reduction' effects for energy-dense food can likely be expected for IR that includes an overt motor movement. While it is not yet clear what movement works best for food, we suggest a tailored movement or Go/No-Go-based stop movement has the potential to be most effective. The most likely mechanism in reducing craving is cue-devaluation of trained vivid craving images regarding specific energy-dense food products. Future work is needed that investigates and assess the underlying mechanisms (e.g., updating beliefs; cue-devaluation), task characteristics (e.g., IR instructions; specific motor movements) and individual characteristics (e.g., perceived craving; vividness of food imagination) that determine IR effects.

ABSTRACT

Mindfulness has garnered attention for its potential in alleviating cigarette cravings; however, the neural mechanisms underlying its efficacy remain inadequately understood. This study (N=46, all men) aims to examine the impact of a mindfulness strategy on regulating cue-induced craving and associated brain activity. Twenty-three smokers, consuming over 10 cigarettes daily for at least 2 years, were compared to twenty-three non-smokers. During a regulation of craving task, participants were asked to practice mindfulness during smoking cue-exposure or passively view smoking cues while fMRI scans were completed. A 2 (condition: mindfulness-cigarette and look-cigarette) × 2 (phase: early, late of whole smoking cue-exposure period) repeated measures ANOVA showed a significant interaction of the craving scores between condition and phase, indicating that the mindfulness strategy dampened late-phase craving. Additionally, within the smoker group, the fMRI analyses revealed a significant main effect of mindfulness condition and its interaction with time in several brain networks involving reward, emotion, and interoception. Specifically, the bilateral insula, ventral striatum, and amygdala showed lower activation in the mindfulness condition, whereas the activation of right orbitofrontal cortex mirrored the strategy-time interaction effect of the craving change. This study illuminates the dynamic interplay between mindfulness, smoking cue-induced craving, and neural activity, offering insights into how mindfulness may effectively regulate cigarette cravings.

ABSTRACT

Individual differences in reward salience may relate to the difficulty in regulating the effects of multiple substances (e.g., nicotine and food). Increased brain activation in reward and self-regulation (SR) regions has been evidenced while adults view appetitive cues (e.g., food pictures) to test substance use disorder treatment response. Enhancing SR with behavioral interventions may increase brain activation in SR regions and reduce responses in reward regions. Our primary analysis demonstrated increased brain activation in SR regions to smoking cues among individuals who practiced SR by delaying their first cigarette of the day for 2 weeks. However, little is known about the generalizability of SR between appetitive cues. This secondary analysis explored the influence of adherence to a SR behavioral intervention by examining the impact of practicing smoking SR on brain activation to food cues among adults who smoke. Participants (N = 65) were randomly assigned to practice SR by delaying their first daily cigarette or smoking as usual for 2-weeks. Functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected while people were told to think of "negative" or "positive" associations with the cue. The results indicated that practicing smoking SR was linked with increased activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) when viewing food cues. There was no correlation between delaying smoking adherence and brain activation in the dlPFC. Exploratory analyses suggested higher dlPFC activation when people thought about "positive" associations with the food cues instead of "negative" ones. We concluded that practicing smoking SR is related to increased brain activation to food cues, suggesting potential generalizability of SR practice from smoking cues to food cues.

ABSTRACT

Substance use disorders are prevalent, causing extensive morbidity and mortality worldwide. Evidence-based treatments are of low to moderate effect size. Growth in the neurobiological understanding of addiction (e.g., craving) along with technological advancements in neuromodulation have enabled an evaluation of neurosurgical treatments for substance use disorders. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) involves surgical implantation of leads into brain targets and subcutaneous tunneling to connect the leads to a programmable implanted pulse generator (IPG) under the skin of the chest. DBS allows direct testing of neurobiologically-guided hypotheses regarding the etiology of substance use disorders in service of developing more effective treatments. Early studies, although with multiple limitations, have been promising. Still the authors express caution regarding implementation of DBS studies in this population and emphasize the importance of safeguards to ensure patient safety and meaningful study results. In this perspectives article, we review lessons learned through the years of planning an ongoing trial of DBS for methamphetamine use disorder.

ABSTRACT

Objective: : This study aimed to analyze the effect of the intensified transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) targeting bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on craving reduction in patients with opioid use disorder. Methods: : This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 30 individuals who participated voluntarily at Baharan Camp of Shahid Mahalati. The participants had already completed the detoxification phase and stayed at the camp to resolve their craving and gain occupational skills to reintegrate into the community. The participants were selected using convenience and purposive sampling methods and were then assigned to an experimental group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15). The experimental group received ten 20-minute tDCS sessions twice a day for 5 consecutive days. There was a 20-minute break between the two stimulations. The DLPFC was stimulated with a current intensity of 2 mA (anode: F3 and cathode: F4). The control group received a sham stimulation. Both groups completed Franken's Desires for Drug Questionnaire at baseline and after the stimulation sessions. Additionally, they completed the questionnaires once again three months after the end of the treatment to assess treatment retention. Results: : At the posttest stage, the intensified tDCS had significant effects on momentary opioid craving reduction in all measured factors, e.g., desire and intention, negative reinforcement, and control (p < 0.001). However, the results concerning treatment retention at the 3-month follow-up stage were insignificant for all factors (p < 0.001). Conclusion: : Apparently, tDCS can be used as a tool to reduce craving. However, its application as an independent and sustainable treatment remains debatable.
