ABSTRACT

Cerium and cobalt loaded Co-Ce/TiO2 catalyst prepared by impregnation method was investigated for photothermal catalytic toluene oxidation. Based on catalyst characterizations (XPS, EPR and H2-TPR), redox cycle between Co and TiO2 (Co2+ + Ti4+ ↔ Co3+ + Ti3+) results in the formation of Co3+, Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies, which play important roles in toluene catalytic oxidation reaction. The introduction of Ce brings in the dual redox cycles (Co2+ + Ti4+ ↔ Co3+ + Ti3+, Co2+ + Ce4+ ↔ Co3+ + Ce3+), further promoting the elevation of reaction sites amount. Under full spectrum irradiation with light intensity of 580 mW/cm2, Co-Ce/TiO2 catalyst achieved 96% of toluene conversion and 73% of CO2 yield, obviously higher than Co/P25 and Co/TiO2. Co-Ce/TiO2 efficiently maintains 10-hour stability test under water vapor conditions and exhibits better photothermal catalytic performance than counterparts under different wavelengths illumination. Photothermal catalytic reaction displays improved activities compared with thermal catalysis, which is attributed to the promotional effect of light including photocatalysis and light activation of reactive oxygen species.

ABSTRACT

Herein, three supported catalysts, CuO/Al2O3, CeO2/Al2O3, and CuO-CeO2/Al2O3, were synthesized by the convenient impregnation method to reveal the effect of CeO2 addition on catalytic performance and reaction mechanism for toluene oxidation. Compared with CuO/Al2O3, the T50 and T90 (the temperatures at 50% and 90% toluene conversion, respectively) of CuO-CeO2/Al2O3 were reduced by 33 and 39 °C, respectively. N2 adsorption-desorption experiment, XRD, SEM, EDS mapping, Raman, EPR, H2-TPR, O2-TPD, XPS, NH3-TPD, Toluene-TPD, and in-situ DRIFTS were conducted to characterize these catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance of CuO-CeO2/Al2O3 could be attributed to its strong copper-cerium interaction and high oxygen vacancies concentration. Moreover, in-situ DRIFTS proved that CuO-CeO2/Al2O3 promoted the conversion of toluene to benzoate and accelerated the deep degradation path of toluene. This work provided valuable insights into the development of efficient and economical catalysts for volatile organic compounds.

ABSTRACT

Oxygen activation leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is essential for photocatalytic environmental remediation. The limited efficiency of O2 adsorption and reductive activation significantly limits the production of ROS when employing C3N4 for the degradation of emerging pollutants. Doping with metal single atoms may lead to unsatisfactory efficiency, due to the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Here, Mn and S single atoms were introduced into C3N4, resulting in the excellent photocatalytic performances. Mn/S-C3N4 achieved 100% removal of bisphenol A, with a rate constant 11 times that of pristine C3N4. According to the experimental results and theoretical simulations, S-atoms restrict holes, facilitating the photo-generated carriers' separation. Single-atom Mn acts as the O2 adsorption site, enhancing the adsorption and activation of O2, resulting the generation of ROS. This study presents a novel approach for developing highly effective photocatalysts that follows a new mechanism to eliminate organic pollutants from water.

ABSTRACT

Improving the ease of operation and portability of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection in daily production and life holds significant application value. However, it remains a challenge to achieve rapid colorimetric detection of H2O2 and color change quantification. In this study, we achieved rapid and visual detection of H2O2 by MoOx (2 ≤ x ≤ 3) nanoparticles with rich oxygen vacancies using machine vision. As the concentration of H2O2 increases, the detection system exhibited a visible multi-color change from blue to green and then yellow and the absorption peak near 680 nm measured by the UV-visible spectrophotometer gradually decreased. With excellent sensitivity, a wide linear range of 0.1-600 µmol/L, concentrations as low as 0.1 µmol/L can be detected with good selectivity towards H2O2. The sensing mechanism of detecting H2O2 by the change of oxygen vacancies in MoOx was revealed through characterization methods such as XPS, EPR, and DFT. In addition, the Hue, Saturation, Value (HSV) visual analysis system based on MoOx was constructed to assist in the rapid, portable, and sensitive monitoring of H2O2 in practical application scenarios. This work offers an easy-to operate, low cost, and convenience for achieving rapid colorimetric determination of H2O2 and has broad application prospects in daily life and industrial production.

ABSTRACT

Microbial oxidation and the mechanism of Sb(III) are key governing elements in biogeochemical cycling. A novel Sb oxidizing bacterium, Klebsiella aerogenes HC10, was attracted early and revealed that extracellular metabolites were the main fractions driving Sb oxidation. However, linkages between the extracellular metabolite driven Sb oxidation process and mechanism remain elusive. Here, model phenolic and quinone compounds, i.e., anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) and hydroquinone (HYD), representing extracellular oxidants secreted by K. aerogenes HC10, were chosen to further study the Sb(III) oxidation mechanism. N2 purging and free radical quenching showed that oxygen-induced oxidation accounted for 36.78% of Sb(III) in the metabolite reaction system, while hydroxyl free radicals (·OH) accounted for 15.52%. ·OH and H2O2 are the main driving factors for Sb oxidation. Radical quenching, methanol purification and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis revealed that ·OH, superoxide radical (O2•-) and semiquinone (SQ-•) were reactive intermediates of the phenolic induced oxidation process. Phenolic-induced ROS are one of the main oxidants in metabolites. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed that electron transfer of quinone also mediated Sb(III) oxidation. Part of Sb(V) was scavenged by the formation of the secondary Sb(V)-bearing mineral mopungite [NaSb(OH)6] in the incubation system. Our study demonstrates the microbial role of oxidation detoxification and mineralization of Sb and provides scientific references for the biochemical remediation of Sb-contaminated soil.

ABSTRACT

Ball milling is an environmentally friendly technology for the remediation of petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS), but the cleanup of organic pollutants requires a long time, and the post-remediation soil needs an economically viable disposal/reuse strategy due to its vast volume. The present paper develops a ball milling process under oxygen atmosphere to enhance PCS remediation and reuse the obtained carbonized soil (BCS-O) as wastewater treatment materials. The total petroleum hydrocarbon removal rates by ball milling under vacuum, air, and oxygen atmospheres are 39.83%, 55.21%, and 93.84%, respectively. The Langmuir and pseudo second-order models satisfactorily describe the adsorption capacity and behavior of BCS-O for transition metals. The Cu2+, Ni2+, and Mn2+ adsorbed onto BCS-O were mainly bound to metal carbonates and metal oxides. Furthermore, BCS-O can effectively activate persulfate (PDS) oxidation to degrade aniline, while BCS-O loaded with transition metal (BCS-O-Me) shows better activation efficiency and reusability. BCS-O and BCS-O-Me activated PDS oxidation systems are dominated by 1O2 oxidation and electron transfer. The main active sites are oxygen-containing functional groups, vacancy defects, and graphitized carbon. The oxygen-containing functional groups and vacancy defects primarily activate PDS to generate 1O2 and attack aniline. Graphitized carbon promotes aniline degradation by accelerating electron transfer. The paper develops an innovative strategy to simultaneously realize efficient remediation of PCS and sequential reuse of the post-remediation soil.

ABSTRACT

The environmental threat posed by stibnite is an important geoenvironmental issue of current concern. To better understand stibnite oxidation pathways, aerobic abiotic batch experiments were conducted in aqueous solution with varying δ18OH2O value at initial neutral pH for different lengths of time (15-300 days). The sulfate oxygen and sulfur isotope compositions as well as concentrations of sulfur and antimony species were determined. The sulfur isotope fractionation factor (Δ34SSO4-stibnite) values decreased from 0.8‰ to -2.1‰ during the first 90 days, and increased to 2.6‰ at the 180 days, indicating the dominated intermediate sulfur species such as S2O32-, S0, and H2S (g) involved in Sb2S3 oxidation processes. The incorporation of O into sulfate derived from O2 (∼100%) indicated that the dissociated O2 was only directly adsorbed on the stibnite-S sites in the initial stage (0-90 days). The proportion of O incorporation into sulfate from water (27%-52%) increased in the late stage (90-300 days), which suggested the oxidation mechanism changed to hydroxyl attack on stibnite-S sites promoted by nearby adsorbed O2 on stibnite-Sb sites. The exchange of oxygen between sulfite and water may also contributed to the increase of water derived O into SO42-. The new insight of stibnite oxidation pathway contributes to the understanding of sulfide oxidation mechanism and helps to interpret field data.

ABSTRACT

Treadmill gait assessment can be relevant for clinical decision-making. However, demographic factors such as age and BMI may alter result interpretation. Our aim was to obtain spatiotemporal, energetic, and cost of transport variables during self-selected treadmill walking speed for a representative sample of Uruguayan adults (n=28) and to assess if different age ranges and BMI could be factors to consider in clinical tests involving these variables. Seventeen men and eleven women participated (39.3 ± 14.8 years, 75.9 ± 12.5 kg, 1.74 ± 0.09 m, BMI 25.2 ± 4.06). A synchronized 3D motion reconstruction was performed with energy consumption. Reference values were obtained and data were compared using t-tests (p≤0.05), after grouping participants by BMI and age range. Results revealed significant discrepancies in spatiotemporal and energetic measures of Uruguayan adults walking on the treadmill, compared to the literature. Gait differed between young and middle-aged adults in their self-selected speed (p=0.03), stride length (p=0.01), external mechanical work (p<0.001), and mechanical energy recovery (0.009), emphasizing the importance of considering age in clinical evaluations. BMI did not significantly influence these variables. These findings underscore the need to adjust interpretations of treadmill gait clinical tests in middle-aged Uruguayan adults (45 to 65 years).

ABSTRACT

Transition metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) are emerging as potential alternatives to platinum for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in zinc-air batteries (ZAB). However, the simultaneous coexistence of single-atom moieties in the preparation of NPs is inevitable, and the structural complexity of catalysts poses a great challenge to identifying the true active site. Herein, by employing in situ and ex situ XAS analysis, we demonstrate the coexistence of single-atom moieties and iron phosphide NPs in the N, P co-doped porous carbon (in short, Fe-N4-Fe2P NPs/NPC), and identify that ORR predominantly proceeds via the atomic-dispersed Fe-N4 sites, while the presence of Fe2P NPs exerts an inhibitory effect by decreasing the site utilization and impeding mass transfer of reactants. The single-atom catalyst Fe-N4/NPC displays a half-wave potential of 0.873 V, surpassing both Fe-N4-Fe2P NPs/NPC (0.858 V) and commercial Pt/C (0.842 V) in alkaline condition. In addition, the ZAB based on Fe-N4/NPC achieves a peak power density of 140.3 mW cm-2, outperforming that of Pt/C-based ZAB (91.8 mW cm-2) and exhibits excellent long-term stability. This study provides insight into the identification of true active sites of supported ORR catalysts and offers an approach for developing highly efficient, nonprecious metal-based catalysts for high-energy-density metal-air batteries.

ABSTRACT

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) refer to a variety of derivatives of molecular oxygen that play crucial roles in regulating a wide range of physiological and pathological processes. Excessive ROS levels can cause oxidative stress, leading to cellular damage and even cell demise. However, moderately elevated levels of ROS can mediate the oxidative post-translational modifications (oxPTMs) of redox-sensitive proteins, thereby affecting protein functions and regulating various cellular signaling pathways. Among the oxPTMs, ROS-induced reversible protein sulfenylation represents the initial form of cysteine oxidation for sensing redox signaling. In this review, we will summarize the discovery, chemical formation, and detection approaches of protein sulfenylation. In addition, we will highlight recent findings for the roles of protein sulfenylation in various diseases, including thrombotic disorders, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis(OP) is a bone disease under research. Iron overload is a significant risk factor. Iron balance is crucial for bone metabolism and biochemical processes. When there is an excess of iron in the body, it tends to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can cause oxidative damage to cells. The flavonoid compound, Cardamonin (CAR), possesses potent anti-inflammatory and anti-iron overload properties that can be beneficial in mitigating the risk of OP. PURPOSE: This study investigates the potential therapeutic interventions and underlying mechanisms of CAR for treating OP in individuals with iron overload. METHODS: The model of iron-overloaded mice was established by intraperitoneally injecting iron dextran(ID) into the mice. OP severity was evaluated with micro-CT and Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining in vivo. In vitro, the iron-overloaded osteoblast model was induced by ferric ammonium citrate. Cell counting kit 8 assay to evaluate cell viability, Annexin V-FITC/PI assay to detect cell apoptosis. A range of cellular markers were detected, including the variation in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), ROS, and lipid hydroperoxide (LPO). RESULTS: CAR can reverse bone loss in iron overload-induced OP mouse models in vivo. CAR attenuates the impairment of iron overload on the activity and apoptosis of MC3T3-E1 cells as well as the accumulation of ROS and LPO activation via HIF-1α/ROS pathways. CONCLUSION: CAR downregulating HIF-1α pathways prevents inhibition of iron overload-induced osteoblasts dysfunctional by attenuating ROS accumulation, reducing oxidative stress, promotes bone formation, and alleviates OP.

ABSTRACT

Lipid remodeling is crucial for various cellular activities and the stress tolerance of plants; however, little is known about the lipid dynamics induced by the heavy metal cadmium (Cd). In this study, we investigated the phospholipid profiles in rice (Oryza sativa) under Cd exposure. We observed a significant decline in the total amounts of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylserine, contrasted with an elevation in phosphatidic acid (PA) due to Cd stress. Additionally, Cd stress prompted the activation of phospholipase D (PLD) and induced the expression of PLDα1. OsPLDα1 knockout mutants (Ospldα1) showed increased sensitivity to Cd, characterized by a heightened accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in roots and diminished PA production following Cd treatment. Conversely, PLDα1-overexpressing (OsPLDα1-OE) lines demonstrated enhanced tolerance to Cd, with suppressed transcription of the respiratory burst oxidase homolog (Rboh) genes. The transcription levels of genes associated with Cd uptake and transport were accordingly modulated in Ospldα1 and OsPLDα1-OE plants relative to the wild-type. Taken together, our findings underscore the pivotal role of OsPLDα1 in conferring tolerance to Cd by modulating reactive oxygen species homeostasis and lipid remodeling in rice.

ABSTRACT

Mesenchymal stem cells based therapy has been used in clinic for almost 20 years and has shown encouraging effects in treating a wide range of diseases. However, the underlying mechanism is far more complicated than it was previously assumed. Mitochondria transfer is one way that recently found to be employed by mesenchymal stem cells to exert its biological effects. As one way of exchanging mitochondrial components, mitochondria transfer determines both mesenchymal stem cells and recipient cell fates. In this review, we describe the factors that contribute to MSCs-MT. Then, the routes and mechanisms of MSCs-MT are summarized to provide a theoretical basis for MSCs therapy. Besides, the advantages and disadvantages of MSCs-MT in clinical application are analyzed.

ABSTRACT

Topotactic reduction is critical to a wealth of phase transitions of current interest, including synthesis of the superconducting nickelate Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2, reduced from the initial Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure. Due to the highly sensitive and often damaging nature of the topotactic reduction, however, only a handful of research groups have been able to reproduce the superconductivity results. A series of in situ synchrotron-based investigations reveal that this is due to the necessary formation of an initial, ultrathin layer at the Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3 surface that helps to mediate the introduction of hydrogen into the film such that apical oxygens are first removed from the Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3 / SrTiO3 (001) interface and delivered into the reducing environment. This allows the square-planar / perovskite interface to stabilize and propagate from the bottom to the top of the film without the formation of interphase defects. Importantly, neither geometric rotations in the square planar structure nor significant incorporation of hydrogen within the films is detected, obviating its need for superconductivity. These findings unveil the structural basis underlying the transformation pathway and provide important guidance on achieving the superconducting phase in reduced nickelate systems.

ABSTRACT

Li-O2 batteries (LOBs) have gained widespread recognition for their exceptional energy densities. However, a major challenge faced by LOBs is the lack of appropriate electrolytes that can effectively balance reactant transport, interfacial compatibility, and non-volatility. To address this issue, a novel supramolecular deep eutectic electrolyte (DEE) has been developed, based on synergistic interaction between Li-bonds and H-bonds through a combination of lithium salt (LiTFSI), acetamide (Ace) and boric acid (BA). The incorporation of BA serves as an interface modification additive, acting as both Li-bonds acceptor and H-bonds donor/acceptor, thereby enhancing the redox stability of the electrolyte, facilitating a solution phase discharge process and improving compatibility with the Li anode. Our proposed DEE demonstrates a high oxidation voltage of 4.5 V, an ultrahigh discharge capacity of 15225 mAh g-1 and stable cycling performance of 196 cycles in LOBs. Additionally, the intrinsic non-flammability and successful operation of a Li-O2 pouch cell indicate promising practical applications of this electrolyte. This research broadens the design possibilities for LOBs electrolytes and provides theoretical insights for future studies.

ABSTRACT

In the quest for efficient and stable oxygen evolution catalysts (OECs) for photoelectrochemical water splitting, the surface modification of BiVO4 is a crucial step. In this study, a novel and robust OEC, based on 3-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl) amino) propanoic acid bifunctional linker known as dipicolyl alanine acid (DPAA) and cobalt ions, is prepared and fully characterized. The DPAA is anchored to the surface of BiVO4 and utilized to tether cobalt ions. The Co-DPAA/BiVO4 photoanode exhibits remarkable stability and efficiency toward photoelectrochemical water oxidation. Specifically, it showed anodic photocurrent increase of 7.1, 5.0, 3.0, and 1.3-fold at 1.23 VRHE as compared to pristine BiVO4, DPAA/BiVO4, Co-BiVO4, and Co-Pi/BiVO4 photoanodes, respectively. The photoelectrochemical and IMPS studies revealed that the Co-DPAA/BiVO4 photoanode exhibits a longer transient decay time for surface-trapped holes, higher charge transfer kinetics, and charge separation efficiency compared to Co-Pi/BiVO4 and pristine BiVO4 photoelectrodes. This indicates that the Co-DPAA effectively reduces surface recombination and facilitates charge transfer. Moreover, at 1.23 VRHE, the Co-DPAA/BiVO4 photoanode achieved a faradic efficiency of 92% for oxygen evolution reaction and could retain a turnover frequency of 3.65 s-1. The- exhibited effeciency is  higher than most of the efficient molecular oxygen evolution catalyst based on Ru.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To propose a new method for quantitatively mapping the renal metabolic rate of oxygen (RMRO2) and to evaluate the proposed method using a caffeine challenge. THEORY AND METHODS: Pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL) and QSM sequences were used to obtain MR images in the kidney. Six healthy volunteers were scanned on caffeine and control days. The pCASL and QSM images were registered using DICOM information and rigid translation. The Fick principle was applied to estimate RMRO2. The results on caffeine and control days were compared to evaluate the capability of the proposed method to estimate renal oxygen consumption. A paired t-test was used to assess the statistical significance. RESULTS: Estimated renal blood flow (RBF), QSM, and RMRO2 maps were consistent with those reported in the literature. RMRO2 values were higher than the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) and were significantly reduced on the caffeine days compared to the control days, consistent with findings from non-MRI literature. CONCLUSION: The feasibility of measuring renal oxygen consumption using pCASL and QSM images was demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, this work provides quantitative maps of renal oxygen consumption in humans for the first time. The results were consistent with the literature, including the statistically significant reduction in renal oxygen consumption with caffeine challenge. These findings suggest the potential utility of our technique in measuring renal oxygen consumption noninvasively, especially for patients with complications associated with contrast agents.

ABSTRACT

Perovskite oxides are considered highly promising candidates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts due to their low cost and adaptable electronic structure. However, modulating the electronic structure of catalysts without altering their nanomorphology is crucial for understanding the structure-property relationship. In this study, a simple plasma bombardment strategy is developed to optimize the catalytic activity of perovskite oxides. Experimental characterization of plasma-treated LaCo0.9Fe0.1O3 (P-LCFO) reveals abundant oxygen vacancies, which expose numerous active sites. Additionally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure analyses indicate a low Co valence state in P-LCFO, likely due to the presence of these oxygen vacancies, which contributes to an optimized electronic structure that enhances OER performance. Consequently, P-LCFO exhibits significantly improved OER catalytic activity, with a low overpotential of 294 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, outperforming commercial RuO2. This work underscores the benefits of plasma engineering for studying structure-property relationships and developing highly active perovskite oxide catalysts for water splitting.

ABSTRACT

Amplifying oxidative stress to disrupt intracellular redox homeostasis can accelerate tumor cell death. In this work, an oxidative stress amplifier (PP@T) is prepared for enhanced tumor oxidation therapy to reduce tumor growth and metastases. The nano-amplifier has been successfully constructed by embedding MTH1 inhibitor (TH588) in the PDA-coated porphyrin metal-organic framework PCN-224. The controllable-released TH588 is demonstrated from pores can hinder MTH1-mediated damage-repairing process by preventing the hydrolysis of 8-oxo-dG, thereby amplifying oxidative stress and exacerbating the oxidative DNA damage induced by the sonodynamic therapy of PP@T under ultrasound irradiation. Furthermore, PP@T can effectively induce immunogenic cell death to trigger systemic anti-tumor immune response. When administered in combination with immune checkpoint blockade, PP@T not only impedes the progression of the primary tumor but also achieves obvious antimetastasis in breast cancer murine models, including orthotopic and artificial whole-body metastasis models. Furthermore, the nanoplatform also provides photoacoustic imaging for in vivo treatment guidance. In conclusion, by amplifying oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species sensitized immunotherapy, this image-guided nanosystem shows potential for highly specific, effective combined therapy against tumor cells with negligible side-effects to normal cells which will provide a new insight for precise tumor treatment.
