ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection significantly contributes to the global cancer burden. Understanding the factors influencing male clinical interns' willingness to promote HPV vaccination is crucial for developing effective public health strategies in China. METHODS: This study employed a stratified random sampling method to select 1,980 male clinical interns from five provinces in China between January and March 2024. Data were collected on participants' demographic characteristics, HPV-related clinical experience, and knowledge. The Theory of Planned Behavior framework, encompassing attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, was used to examine factors influencing the willingness to promote the HPV vaccine. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with the willingness to promote the HPV vaccine. RESULTS: Among the respondents, 72.29% were willing to encourage others to receive the HPV vaccine. Significant factors influencing this willingness included older age (OR = 3.065, P ≤ 0.001), higher monthly household income (OR = 1.449, P = 0.025), participation in the diagnosis and treatment of HPV-related diseases (OR = 3.458, P ≤ 0.001), positive attitude towards the vaccine (OR = 13.503, P = 0.004), and strong perceived behavioral control (OR = 2.364, P = 0.006). CONCLUSION: This study highlights the critical role of practical experience and targeted education in promoting HPV vaccination among male clinical interns in China. Enhancing the training and education of this group is essential for improving HPV vaccine advocacy and supporting public health efforts to reduce HPV-related diseases.

ABSTRACT

Artificial regulation of plant rhizosphere microbial communities through the synthesis of microbial communities is one of the effective ways to improve plant stress resistance. However, the process of synthesizing stress resistant microbial communities with excellent performance is complex, time-consuming, and costly. To address this issue, we proposed a novel strategy for preparing functional microbial communities. We isolated a cultivable cold tolerant bacterial community (PRCBC) from the rhizosphere of peas, and studied its effectiveness in assisting rice to resist stress. The results indicate that PRCBC can not only improve the ability of rice to resist cold stress, but also promote the increase of rice yield after cold stress relieved. This is partly because PRCBC increases the nitrogen content in the rhizosphere soil, and promotes rice's absorption of nitrogen elements, thereby promoting rice growth and enhancing its ability to resist osmotic stress. More importantly, the application of PRCBC drives the succession of rice rhizosphere microbial communities, and promotes the succession of rice rhizosphere microbial communities towards stress resistance. Surprisingly, PRCBC drives the succession of rice rhizosphere microbial communities towards a composition similar to PRCBC. This provides a feasible novel method for artificially and directionally driving microbial succession. In summary, we not only proposed a novel and efficient strategy for preparing stress resistant microbial communities to promote plant stress resistance, but also unexpectedly discovered a possible directionally driving method for soil microbial community succession.

ABSTRACT

Background: Little is known about how best to reach people with social marketing messages promoting use of clinical HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) services. Objective: We evaluated a multiplatform, digital social marketing campaign intended to increase use of HIV/STI testing, treatment, and prevention services among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) at an LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or questioning) community health center. Methods: We evaluated engagement with a social marketing campaign launched by Open Door Health, the only LGBTQ+ community health center in Rhode Island, during the first 8 months of implementation (April to November 2021). Three types of advertisements encouraging use of HIV/STI services were developed and implemented on Google Search, Google Display, Grindr, and Facebook. Platforms tracked the number of times that an advertisement was displayed to a user (impressions), that a user clicked through to a landing page that facilitated scheduling (clicks), and that a user requested a call to schedule an appointment from the landing page (conversions). We calculated the click-through rate (clicks per impression), conversion rate (conversions per click), and the dollar amount spent per 1000 impressions and per click and conversion. Results: Overall, Google Search yielded the highest click-through rate (7.1%) and conversion rate (7.0%) compared to Google Display, Grindr, and Facebook (click-through rates=0.4%-3.3%; conversion rates=0%-0.03%). Although the spend per 1000 impressions and per click was higher for Google Search compared to other platforms, the spend per conversion-which measures the number of people intending to attend the clinic for services-was substantially lower for Google Search (US $48.19 vs US $3120.42-US $3436.03). Conclusions: Campaigns using the Google Search platform may yield the greatest return on investment for engaging MSM in HIV/STI services at community health clinics. Future studies are needed to measure clinical outcomes among those who present to the clinic for services after viewing campaign advertisements and to compare the return on investment with use of social marketing campaigns relative to other approaches.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) plays a crucial role in health care, providing benefits in the prevention and management of many noncommunicable diseases. Wearable activity trackers (WATs) provide an opportunity to monitor and promote PA in various health care settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a consensus-based framework for the optimal use of WATs in health care. METHODS: A 4-round Delphi survey was conducted, involving a panel (n=58) of health care professionals, health service managers, and researchers. Round 1 used open-response questions to identify overarching themes. Rounds 2 and 3 used 9-point Likert scales to refine participants' opinions and establish consensus on key factors related to WAT use in health care, including metrics, device characteristics, clinical populations and settings, and software considerations. Round 3 also explored barriers and mitigating strategies to WAT use in clinical settings. Insights from Rounds 1-3 informed a draft checklist designed to guide a systematic approach to WAT adoption in health care. In Round 4, participants evaluated the draft checklist's clarity, utility, and appropriateness. RESULTS: Participation rates for rounds 1 to 4 were 76% (n=44), 74% (n=43), 74% (n=43), and 66% (n=38), respectively. The study found a strong interest in using WATs across diverse clinical populations and settings. Key metrics (step count, minutes of PA, and sedentary time), device characteristics (eg, easy to charge, comfortable, waterproof, simple data access, and easy to navigate and interpret data), and software characteristics (eg, remote and wireless data access, access to multiple patients' data) were identified. Various barriers to WAT adoption were highlighted, including device-related, patient-related, clinician-related, and system-level issues. The findings culminated in a 12-item draft checklist for using WATs in health care, with all 12 items endorsed for their utility, clarity, and appropriateness in Round 4. CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the potential of WATs in enhancing patient care across a broad spectrum of health care settings. While the benefits of WATs are evident, successful integration requires addressing several challenges, from technological developments to patient education and clinician training. Collaboration between WAT manufacturers, researchers, and health care professionals will be pivotal for implementing WATs in the health care sector.

ABSTRACT

Physicochemical methods for remediating phenol-contaminated soils are costly and inefficient, making biodegradation an environmentally friendly alternative approach. This study aims to screen for potential phenol-degrading bacteria and to verify the removal capacities of a selected strain in a bioaugmentation experiment at the greenhouse level using Brassica chinensis L. (Chinese cabbage) as the model plant and phenol-contaminated soil. In parallel, pot experiments were conducted using a collaborative approach based on this model system. We found that Myroides xuanwuensis strain H13 showed a high degradation capability, with a 97.67% efficiency in degrading 100 mg/L phenol. Under shaking flask conditions, H13 facilitated the solubilization of tricalcium phosphate and potassium feldspar powder. Pot experiments suggested a phenol removal percentage of 89.22% and enhanced availability of soil phosphorus and potassium for plants with H13 inoculation. In this case, the abundance of soil microbes and the activity of soil enzymes significantly increased as well. Furthermore, both photosynthesis and the antioxidant system in Chinese cabbage were enhanced following H13 inoculation, resulting in its increased yield and quality. Partial least squares path modeling revealed that H13 can primarily affect plant root growth, with a secondary impact on photosynthesis. These findings highlight the potential of biodegradation from phenol-degrading bacteria as a promising strategy for efficient phenol removal from soil while promoting plant growth and health.IMPORTANCEThis study is significant for environmental remediation and agriculture by its exploration of a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective bio-strategy in treating phenol-contaminated soil. These findings have essential implications for environmental remediation efforts and sustainable agriculture. By utilizing the biodegradation capabilities of Myroides xuanwuensis strain H13, it is possible to remove phenol contaminants from the soil efficiently, reducing their negative effects. Furthermore, the enhanced growth and health of the Chinese cabbage plants indicate the potential of this approach to promote sustainable crop production.

ABSTRACT

The utilization of a cost-free sacrificial agent is a novel approach to significantly enhance the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production by water splitting. Wastewater contains various organic pollutants, which have the potential to be used as hole sacrificial agents to promote H2 production. Our studies on different pollutants reveals that not all pollutants can effectively promote H2 production. However, when using the same pollutants, not all photocatalysts achieved a higher H2 evolution rate than pure water. Only when the primary oxidizing active species of the photocatalyst are •OH radicals, which are generated by photogenerated holes, and when the pollutants are easily attacked and degraded by •OH radicals, can the production of H2 be effectively promoted. It is noteworthy that the porous brookite TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits a significantly higher H2 evolution rate in Reactive Red X-3B and Congo Red, reaching as high as 26.46 mmol⋅g-1⋅h-1 and 32.85 mmol⋅g-1 ⋅h-1, respectively, which is 2-3 times greater than that observed in pure water and is 10 times greater than most reported studies. The great significance of this work lies in the potential for efficient H2 production through the utilization of wastewater.

Background: Workplace mental health is an important global health concern. objectives: This unblinded, phase-III, wait-listed cluster randomized controlled trial aimed to examine the effectiveness of a mobile health (mHealth) psychoeducation program using a spaced education approach on mental health literacy (MHL) in the workplace. The main interest of this paper was the immediate and 3-month medium-term effect of the program on the MHL of workers. The purposely built mHealth platform was also evaluated as a health-related app. Methods: The mHealth platform was designed using the principle of spaced education as a psychoeducation intervention program, with various modules of web-based and mobile materials presented to the participant in a progressive manner. Short quizzes at the end of each module ensured adequate learning, and successful completion qualified the learner to progress to the next level. The trial recruited 456 employees of specific industries with high levels of work-related stress. Participants who were nested in different offices or units were allocated into the intervention and wait-listed control groups using a block randomization process, with the office or unit as the cluster. A separate sample of 70 individual raters were used for the evaluation of the mHealth platform. The Australian National MHL and Stigma Survey and the Mobile Apps Rating Scale were completed through a web-based self-reported survey to assess MHL and evaluate the app. The trial and follow-up data were analyzed by a generalized linear latent and mixed model with adjustments for the clustering effect of work sites and repeated measures. Results: Of the 456 participants in the trial, 236 (51.8%) responded to the follow-up survey. Most MHL outcomes obtained significant results immediately after the intervention and across time. After adjusting for the clustering effect, the postintervention weighted mean scores were significantly higher in the intervention group than the control group for correct recognition of a mental health problem, help seeking, and stigmatization by 0.2 (SE 0.1; P=.003), 0.9 (SE 0.2; P<.001), and 1.8 (SE 0.4; P<.001), respectively. After adjusting for the clustering effect, significant differences across time were found in help-seeking intention (P=.01), stigmatization (P<.001), and social distancing (P<.001). The evaluation of the mHealth program resulted in average scores of the 4 major domains ranging from 3.8 to 4.2, with engagement having the lowest score. Conclusions: The mHealth psychoeducation intervention program using this platform had immediate and 3-month medium-term effects of retaining and improving MHL. The platform was evaluated to have satisfactory performance in terms of functionality, aesthetics, information content, and utility in enhancing MHL. It is anticipated that ongoing development in digital health will provide great benefits in improving the mental health of the global population.

Rice protein peptides (RPP) are a potentially valuable source of high-quality calcium chelating properties. However, there is a lack of information regarding the calcium-absorption-promoting effect of RPP and its underlying mechanism. The present study adopted molecular docking methodologies to analyze the 10 most potent peptide segments from RPP. Results revealed that the peptide AHVGMSGEEPE (AHV) displayed optimal calcium binding properties (calcium-chelating capacity 55.69 ± 0.66 mg/g). Quantum chemistry analysis revealed that the AHV peptide effectively binds and forms stable complexes with calcium via the carbonyl oxygen atoms in valine at position 3 and the carbonyl of the C-terminal carboxyl group of glutamate at position 11. The spectral analysis results indicated that AHV may bind to calcium through carboxyl oxygen atoms, resulting in a transition from a smooth surface block-like structure to a dense granular structure. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that the 4 mmol/L AHV-Ca chelate (61.75 ± 13.23 µg/well) significantly increases calcium absorption compared to 1 mM CaCl2 (28.57 ± 8.59 µg/well) in the Caco-2 cell monolayer. In terms of mechanisms, the novel peptide-calcium chelate AHV-Ca derived from RPP exerts a cell-level effect by upregulating the expression of TRPV6 calcium-ion-channel-related genes and proteins (TRPV6 and Calbindin-D9k). This study provides a theoretical basis for developing functional foods with the AHV peptide as ingredients to improve calcium absorption.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the significance of adopting healthy lifestyles to mitigate the risk of severe outcomes and long-term consequences. OBJECTIVE: This study focuses on assessing the prevalence and clustering of 5 unhealthy lifestyle behaviors among Vietnamese adults after recovering from COVID-19, with a specific emphasis on sex differences. METHODS: The cross-sectional data of 5890 survivors of COVID-19 in Vietnam were analyzed from December 2021 to October 2022. To examine the sex differences in 5 unhealthy lifestyle behaviors (smoking, drinking, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and sedentary behavior), the percentages were plotted along with their corresponding 95% CI for each behavior. Latent class analysis was used to identify 2 distinct classes of individuals based on the clustering of these behaviors: the "less unhealthy" group and the "more unhealthy" group. We examined the sociodemographic characteristics associated with each identified class and used logistic regression to investigate the factors related to the "more unhealthy" group. RESULTS: The majority of individuals (male participants: 2432/2447, 99.4% and female participants: 3411/3443, 99.1%) exhibited at least 1 unhealthy behavior, with male participants being more susceptible to multiple unhealthy behaviors. The male-to-female ratio for having a single behavior was 1.003, but it escalated to 25 for individuals displaying all 5 behaviors. Male participants demonstrated a higher prevalence of combining alcohol intake with sedentary behavior (949/2447, 38.8%) or an unhealthy diet (861/2447, 35.2%), whereas female participants tended to exhibit physical inactivity combined with sedentary behavior (1305/3443, 37.9%) or an unhealthy diet (1260/3443, 36.6%). Married male participants had increased odds of falling into the "more unhealthy" group compared to their single counterparts (odds ratio [OR] 1.45, 95% CI 1.14-1.85), while female participants exhibited lower odds (OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.51-0.83). Female participants who are underweight showed a higher likelihood of belonging to the "more unhealthy" group (OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.89-1.39), but this was not observed among male participants (OR 0.6, 95% CI 0.41-0.89). In both sexes, older age, dependent employment, high education, and obesity were associated with higher odds of being in the "more unhealthy" group. CONCLUSIONS: The study identified notable sex differences in unhealthy lifestyle behaviors among survivors of COVID-19. Male survivors are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors compared to female survivors. These findings emphasize the importance of tailored public health interventions targeting sex-specific unhealthy behaviors. Specifically, addressing unhealthy habits is crucial for promoting post-COVID-19 health and well-being.

Carbon nanosol (CNS) is a carbon-based nanomaterial capable of promoting plant growth while the underlying mechanism involved in this process remains unknown. This study demonstrates that CNS promotes rice seedling growth under restricted concentrations. Macroelement transporter mutants were investigated to further investigate the CNS-mediated promotion of rice seedling growth. The genetic and physiological findings revealed that nitrate transporter 1.1B (NRT1.1B) and ammonium transporter 1 (AMT1) mutants inhibited the CNS-induced growth development of rice seedlings, whereas potassium transporter (AKT1) and phosphate transporter 8 (PT8) did not exhibit any inhibitory effects. Further investigations demonstrated the inhibition of CNS-mediated growth promotion via glutamine synthetase 1;1 (gs1;1) mutants. Additionally, the administration of CNS resulted in enhanced accumulation of chlorophyll in plants, and the promotion of CNS-induced growth was inhibited by yellow-green leaf 8 (YGL8) mutants and the chlorophyll biosynthetic gene divinyl reductase (DVR) mutants. According to these findings, the CNS promotes plant growth by stimulating chlorophyll biosynthesis. Furthermore, the presence of CNS enhanced the ability of rice to withstand blast, sheath blight (ShB), and bacterial blight. The nrt1.1b, amt1, dvr, and ygl8 mutants did not exhibit a broad spectrum effect. The positive regulation of broad-spectrum resistance in rice by GS1;1 suggests the requirement of N assimilation for CNS-mediated broad-spectrum resistance. In addition, an in vitro assay demonstrated that CNS inhibits the growth of pathogens responsible for blast, ShB, and bacterial blight, namely Magnaporthe oryzae, Rhizoctonia solani AG1-IA, and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. Oryzae, respectively. CNS application may also induce broad-spectrum resistance against bacterial and fungal pathogens, indicating that in addition to its antifungal and antibacterial properties, CNS application may also stimulate N assimilation. Collectively, the results indicate that CNS may be a potential nano-therapeutic agent for improved plant growth promotion while also providing broad-spectrum resistance.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on students' mental health. Interventions are needed to promote their psychological well-being and prevent mental illnesses in the aftermath of this unprecedented situation. Digital escape games can be an effective tool to support students' mental health. A cocreation approach can improve the acceptability of these interventions by involving different stakeholders (eg, end users, game designers, and health professionals) to obtain audience-specific games. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the process of testing and optimizing the game "EscapeCovid" on students' mental health, to serve as a model for the cocreation of future similar interventions. METHODS: The PRODUCES (Problem, Objective, Design, End Users, Cocreators, Evaluation, Scalability) framework was used. Cocreation steps (test and optimization) were detailed for replicability. A total of 45 students tested a pilot version of the game, with 10 undergoing a semistructured interview. Meetings with a group of stakeholders and brainwriting were organized to optimize the game. RESULTS: We produced a new version of the game incorporating the suggestions provided by student testers and following the stakeholders' guidelines. Improvements were made to both the content and the form of the new version of the pilot game. The storyline, including the protagonist and the scenes, was adapted to the student population. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that cocreation can contribute to the design of more widely accepted interventions aimed at promoting mental health and preventing psychological disorders. Results also suggest that an end user-centered approach can facilitate intervention tailoring. When conceiving a health-related escape game for students, we recommend using the cocreation approach to enhance players' experience, thus positively influencing their learning process and overall well-being.

OBJECTIVES: Lack of sleep is a common problem in children and adolescents of school age (students), and it is a health aspect that affects the ability to assimilate into the school's education and thereby falls within the school nurses promoting work. This study aimed to describe school nurses' experiences of sleep-promoting work. METHOD: Data were collected by n = 61 school nurses' written narratives of their sleep-promotion work. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: The results describe school nurses' experiences of sleep-promoting work in three main categories: (1) Informing and providing knowledge is the primary task. School nurses do it systematically, through dialogs with an individual student, with several students simultaneously, or with parents. (2) Benefits take place when the needs of the student guide the work. Through curiosity about the personal story, the keys to sleep-promoting work can be found, appropriate strategies can be given, and the student can be guided further if needed. (3) Barriers challenge the outcome of the work. The school nurses experience these barriers in the form of unmotivated students, unsupportive parents, and lack of prerequisites, which make the school nurses unsure of their performance. CONCLUSIONS: School nurses experience a significant benefit in their sleep-promoting work when the needs of the student guide the sleep-promoting information, strategies, and follow-ups. To avoid feeling insecure in sleep-promoting work, school nurses need updates on the state of knowledge and evidence-based tools. Further research on sleep-promoting work at school is necessary.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is caused by acids from biofilms. pH-sensitive nanoparticle carriers could achieve improved targeted effectiveness. The objectives of this study were to develop novel mesoporous silica nanoparticles carrying nanosilver and chlorhexidine (nMS-nAg-Chx), and investigate the inhibition of biofilms as well as the modulation of biofilm to suppress acidogenic and promote benign species for the first time. METHODS: nMS-nAg was synthesized via a modified sol-gel method. Carboxylate group functionalized nMS-nAg (COOH-nMS-nAg) was prepared and Chx was added via electrostatic interaction. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), inhibition zone, and growth curves were evaluated. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), Streptococcus gordonii (S. gordonii), and Streptococcus sanguinis (S. sanguinis) formed multispecies biofilms. Metabolic activity, biofilm lactic acid, exopolysaccharides (EPS), and TaqMan real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were tested. Biofilm structures and biomass were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and live/dead bacteria staining. RESULTS: nMS-nAg-Chx possessed pH-responsive properties, where Chx release increased at lower pH. nMS-nAg-Chx showed good biocompatibility. nMS-nAg-Chx exhibited a strong antibacterial function, reducing biofilm metabolic activity and lactic acid as compared to control (p < 0.05, n = 6). Moreso, biofilm biomass was dramatically suppressed in nMS-nAg-Chx groups. In control group, there was an increasing trend of S. mutans proportion in the multispecies biofilm, with S. mutans reaching 89.1% at 72 h. In sharp contrast, in nMS-nAg-Chx group of 25 µg/mL, the ratio of S. mutans dropped to 43.7% and the proportion of S. gordonii and S. sanguinis increased from 19.8% and 10.9 to 69.8% and 56.3%, correspondingly. CONCLUSION: pH-sensitive nMS-nAg-Chx had potent antibacterial effects and modulated biofilm toward a non-cariogenic tendency, decreasing the cariogenic species nearly halved and increasing the benign species approximately twofold. nMS-nAg-Chx is promising for applications in mouth rinse and endodontic irrigants, and as fillers in resins to prevent caries.

ABSTRACT

Blood stasis is an important pathological factor throughout the whole course of radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis, which could evolve from new into long stagnation, and the methods of dispelling stasis to promote regeneration should throughout the whole disease progress. It is believed that the basis of the radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis is heat toxin dispersing qi and yin, and deficiency of healthy qi promoting blood stasis. The process of the disease showed latent fire burning pulmonary collaterals, and the binding of phlegm and stasis. The key factors of the disease were the damage of ying-wei (营卫) qi in channels and collaterals, as well as the blood stasis evolving into dried blood. It is suggested that during radiotherapy, we should pay more attention to relieve heat, moisten dryness, supplement qi and yin, nourish and harmonize blood, and remove blood stasis, so as to prevent disease before it arises. If there is radiation pneumonia, we could focus on dissolving phlegm, removing blood stasis, clearing latent fire, and unblocking the collaterals and veins, in order to "control the development of existing disease". If it develops into radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis, we could relive the center and supplement deficiency, tonify original qi, dispel stasis to promote regeneration, and clear dried blood, for the purpose of slowing the progression of disease. These ideas might provide reference for clinical treatment.

ABSTRACT

Edema is one of the typical symptoms of nephrotic syndrome, and symptomatic diuretics is mainly used in clinical practice but with unstable effect. This paper reported a case of refractory edema of nephrotic syndrome treated by acupuncture. The patient was mainly manifested as edema in both lower limbs, which were sunken when pressed and difficult to recover. After symptomatic treatment with western medicine, the effect was not obvious. In traditional Chinese medicine, this patient was diagnosed as spleen-kidney depletion and water-dampness internal accumulation syndrome. Based on the principle of “when swelling is below the waist, urination should be induced” in ZHANG Zhongjing's Essentials from the Golden Cabinet (《金匮要略》), it is recommended to puncture at Shuidao (ST 28) and Shuifen (CV 9) to promote urination, at Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Lougu (SP 7), Yinlingquan (SP 9) and Zusanli (ST 36) to fortify the spleen and boost the kidneys and treat the root and branch simultaneously. After 3-day treatment, urine becomes smooth, and the edema of both lower limbs disappeared.

This paper summarized PENG Qinghua's clinical experience in treating dry eye by applying therapeutic method of maintaining with sweet medicinals and restoring the body fluids. It is believed that the spleen earth insufficiency and fluids damage transforming into dryness are the main pathogenesis of the disease, and the basic therapeutic principle is maintaining with the sweet and restoring the body fluids by mainly using sweet medicines. It is advocated to use mild-sweet herbs, such as Baibiandou (Lablab purpureus subsp. purpureus), Fuling (Smilax glabra Roxb.), and Yiyiren (Coix lacryma-jobi L.), to transport spleen earth, so that qi is restored and body fluids are recovered; moderate-sweet herbs, such as Dangshen (Codonopsis pilosula [Franch.] Nannf.), Taizishen (Pseudostellaria heterophylla [Miq.] Pax), Shanyao (Dioscorea oppositifolia L.) and Zhigancao (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) are suggested to cultivate earth and generate metal, so as to move qi and circulate fluid; sweet-cool herbs, such as Nanshashen (Adenophora triphylla [Thunb.] A.DC.), Beishashen (Glehnia littoralis [A.Gray] F.Schmidt ex Miq.), Yuzhu (Polygonatum odoratum [Mill.] Druce), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim.) are suggested to nourish yin and increase body fluids, so as to promote fluid production to moisten dryness. In this way, when the source of fluid is restored and the fluid is circulated, the fluid can be produced continuously, which provides new ideas for the treatment of dry eyes with traditional Chinese medicine.

ABSTRACT

Zinc alloys have demonstrated considerable potentials as implant materials for biodegradable vascular and orthopedic applications. However, the high initial release of Zn2+ can trigger intense immune responses that impede tissue healing. To address this challenge and enhance the osteogenic capacity of zinc alloys, the surface of Zn1Mg was subjected to CO2 plasma modification (Zn1Mg-PP) followed by grafting with choline phosphate chitosan (Zn1Mg-PP-PCCs). This study aims to investigate the in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility of the surface-modified Zn1Mg. The effect of the surface modification on the inflammatory response and osteogenic repair process was investigated. Compared with unmodified Zn1Mg, the degradation rate of Zn1Mg-PP-PCCs was significantly decreased, avoiding the cytotoxicity triggered by the release of large amounts of Zn2+. Moreover, PCCs significantly enhanced the cell-material adhesion, promoted the proliferation of osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) and upregulated the expression of key osteogenic factors in vitro. Notably, the in vivo experiments revealed that the surface modification of Zn1Mg suppressed inhibited the expression of inflammatory cytokines, promoting the secretion of anti-inflammatory factors, thereby reducing inflammation and promoting bone tissue repair. Furthermore, histological analysis of tissue sections exhibited strong integration between the material and the bone, along with well-defined new bone formation and reduced osteoclast aggregation on the surface. This was attributed to the improved immune microenvironment by PCCs, which promoted osteogenic differentiation of osteoblasts. These findings highlight that the preparation of PCCs coatings on zinc alloy surfaces effectively inhibited ion release and modulated the immune environment to promote bone tissue repair. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Surface modification of biodegradable Zn alloys facilitates the suppression of intense immune responses caused by excessive ion release concentrations from implants. We modified the surface of Zn1Mg with choline phosphate chitosan (PCCs) and investigated the effects of surface modification on the inflammatory response and osteogenic repair process. In vitro results showed that the PCCs coating effectively reduced the degradation rate of Zn1Mg to avoid cytotoxicity caused by high Zn2+ concentration, favoring the proliferation of osteoblasts. In addition, in vivo results indicated that Zn1Mg-PP-PCCs attenuated inflammation to promote bone repair by modulating the release of inflammation-related factors. The surface-modified Zn1Mg implants demonstrated strong osseointegration, indicating that the PCCs coating effectively modulated the immune microenvironment and promoted bone healing.

ABSTRACT

Background: Despite evidence that regular physical activity (PA) among older adults confers numerous health and functional benefits, PA participation rates are low. Using commercially available wearable PA monitors (PAMs) is one way to augment PA promotion efforts. However, while expert recommendations exist for the specific information needed at the beginning of PAM ownership and the general ongoing need for structures that support as-needed technical troubleshooting, information is lacking about the type, frequency, and modes of assistance needed during initial and long-term ownership. Objective: This paper describes problems reported and technical assistance received by older adults who used PAMs during the 18 months they participated in a community-based PA trial: Ready Steady 3.0 (RS3). Methods: This was an ad-hoc longitudinal analysis of process variables representing technical problems reported and assistance received by 113 RS3 study participants in the 18 months after their orientation to PAMs. Variables included date of contact, problem(s) reported, mode of technical assistance, and whether the equipment was replaced. The descriptive analysis included frequencies and incidence rates of distinct contacts, types of problems, and technical assistance modes. Results: On average, participants were aged 77 (SD 5.2) years. Most identified as female (n=87, 77%), reported experience using smartphones (n=92, 81.4%), and used the PAM between 2 and 18 months. Eighty-two participants (72.6%) reported between 1 to 9 problems with using PAMs, resulting in a total of 150 technical assistance contacts with a mean of 1.3 (SD 1.3) contacts. The incidence rate of new, distinct contacts for technical assistance was 99 per 100 persons per year from 2018 to 2021. The most common problems were wearing the PAM (n=43, 28.7%), reading its display (n=23, 15.3%), logging into its app (n=20, 13.3%), charging it (n=18, 12%), and synchronizing it to the app (n=16, 10.7%). The modalities of technical assistance were in person (n=53, 35.3%), by telephone (n=51, 34%), by email (n=25, 16.7%), and by postal mail (n=21, 14%). Conclusions: In general, the results of this study show that after receiving orientation to PAMs, problems such as uncomfortable wristbands, difficulty using the PAM or its related app, and obtaining or interpreting relevant personal data were occasionally reported by participants in RS3. Trained staff helped participants troubleshoot and solve these technical problems primarily in person or by phone. Results also underscore the importance of involving older adults in the design, usability testing, and supportive material development processes to prevent technical problems for the initial and ongoing use of PAMs. Clinicians and researchers should further assess technical assistance needed by older adults, accounting for variations in PAM models and wear time, while investigating additional assistance strategies, such as proactive support, short GIF videos, and video calls.

ABSTRACT

Global health research has traditionally been rooted in colonialism, with some investigators in high-income countries leading and managing research and investigators in low- and middle-income countries serving as implementing partners. The Community Health Worker-Led Intervention for Vaccine Information and Confidence (CIVIC) Project, conducted in India and led jointly by India- and US-based investigators, leveraged web-based platforms to facilitate a more horizontal, inclusive, and balanced approach to partnerships between researchers and the community. Using web-based platforms to conduct research was found to be an effective strategy to engage researchers at all levels and combat systemic barriers associated with in-person activities such as power, economic, social, and gender dynamics. Connecting online for research meetings created a more equitable environment for community members to engage meaningfully with research. Further, by conducting research through web-based platforms, we found that we were able to strengthen the diversity of participants, provide a space for more marginalized groups to speak up, and minimize logistical barriers to attendance. Harnessing web-based approaches in research provides a pathway toward opportunities to promote equity and contribute to the decolonization of global health spaces.
