OBJECTIVES: This systematic review of qualitative studies explored interventions to improve student nurses' knowledge, attitudes or willingness to work with older people. Student nurses are likely to encounter older people in all health and aged care settings, however, research demonstrates that few have career aspirations in gerontological nursing. METHODS: Qualitative systematic review method based on the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. RESULTS: Search of Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, EBSCOhost and Scopus yielded 1841 articles which were screened to include primary research about educational interventions to improve student nurses' knowledge, attitudes and/or willingness to work with older people. Data extraction was performed on the 14 included studies, and data were analysed using directed content analysis. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used the assess the quality of the studies. CONCLUSIONS: Educational interventions included theory or practice courses, or a combination of theory and practice. While most interventions changed nursing students' negative attitudes towards older people, few increased their willingness to work with them. Practice courses had the most significant impact on willingness to work with older people. Quality assessment revealed methodical limitations. More research is needed to better understand the elements of practice interventions that enhance student nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and willingness to work with older people, so that they can be replicated.

Chronic disruption of circadian rhythms by night shift work is associated with an increased breast cancer risk. However, little is known about the impact of night shift on peripheral circadian genes (CGs) and circadian-controlled genes (CCGs) associated with breast cancer. Hence, we assessed central clock markers (melatonin and cortisol) in plasma, and peripheral CGs (PER1, PER2, PER3, and BMAL1) and CCGs (ESR1 and ESR2) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). In day shift nurses (n = 12), 24-h rhythms of cortisol and melatonin were aligned with day shift-oriented light/dark schedules. The mRNA expression of PER2, PER3, BMAL1, and ESR2 showed 24-h rhythms with peak values in the morning. In contrast, night shift nurses (n = 10) lost 24-h rhythmicity of cortisol with a suppressed morning surge but retained normal rhythmic patterns of melatonin, leading to misalignment between cortisol and melatonin. Moreover, night shift nurses showed disruption of rhythmic expressions of PER2, PER3, BMAL1, and ESR2 genes, resulting in an impaired inverse correlation between PER2 and BMAL1 compared to day shift nurses. The observed trends of disrupted circadian markers were recapitulated in additional day (n = 20) and night (n = 19) shift nurses by measurement at early night and midnight time points. Taken together, this study demonstrated the misalignment of cortisol and melatonin, associated disruption of PER2 and ESR2 circadian expressions, and internal misalignment in peripheral circadian network in night shift nurses. Morning plasma cortisol and PER2, BMAL1, and ESR2 expressions in PBMCs may therefore be useful biomarkers of circadian disruption in shift workers.

AIM: To explore cognitions in nurses' professional value and career development amid the COVID-19 pandemic and to analyse influencing factors. DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive study design was employed. METHODS: Thirty practising nurses from three general hospitals in Chengdu, China, were purposively recruited. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted. The content analysis was used for data analysis. RESULTS: After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were obvious cognitive changes in nurses' professional value, including improvement in the cognition of professional value, awareness of the broadening of the field of acting professional value, and realization of increasingly high requirements in careers. Approval and gratitude of patients, social recognition and attention, self-awareness of nurses were main influencing factors. For cognitive changes in career development, nurses became more motivated to develop their careers, had a clearer understanding of career development environment, and acquired a clearer understanding of what was needed to advance careers. Hospital support, social respect, family support, and team atmosphere were key influencing factors. CONCLUSIONS: The contributions made by nurses in the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic have prompted positive changes in their cognition of professional value and career development. To promote nurses' positive understanding and approach to career development, measures should be taken by hospitals. Further, social respect, family support and team cooperation can enhance nurses' enthusiasm for career development.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a hematological malignancy that requires effective pharmacotherapy for optimal management. There is limited information regarding Yemeni clinicians' knowledge and practice of NHL pharmacotherapy. This study aims to assess the knowledge and practice of physicians and nurses in Yemen regarding pharmacotherapy of NHL. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Sana'a, Yemen, from January 1, 2022, to January 31, 2023. Two self-administrated and validated questionnaires were distributed to 99 physicians and 164 nurses involved in pharmacotherapy for NHL in different oncology centers and units across Yemen. Convenience samples were used to recruit participants. A binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with nurses' and physicians' knowledge and practice. The correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationship between knowledge and practice. A total of 77 physicians and 105 nurses completed the questionnaires. The results showed that 54.3% of nurses and 66.2% of physicians had poor knowledge of NHL pharmacotherapy. In terms of practice, 83.8% of nurses and 75.3% of physicians exhibited poor practice regarding NHL pharmacotherapy. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified that nurses who received sufficient information about chemotherapy displayed a significant association with good knowledge, while nurses working in the chemotherapy administration department were significant predictors of good practice. Among physicians, those working in the National Oncology Center (NOC) in Sana'a demonstrated good practice. Correlation analysis revealed a positive relationship between nurses' knowledge and their practice. The study's results confirm deficiencies in knowledge and practice of pharmacotherapy for NHL among physicians and nurses in Yemen. Efforts should be made to enhance their understanding of treatment guidelines and to improve patient care. Improvement in educational programs and training opportunities may contribute to improving patient outcomes in the management of NHL.

Meaningful work is related to the motivation to continue to work in older ages and later retirement. This qualitative study addresses calls for further research on the meaning of working for older workers using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach to explore in-depth the dimensions underlying the subjective experience of meaningful work among 27 nurses and nursing assistants aged 55-75 years. The findings show that work was perceived as a primary source of: (1) personal identity (2) purpose and contribution, (3) competence and accomplishment, (4) social contacts and belongingness, (5) activity, routines and purposeful use of time, and (6) economic security and freedom. These qualitative findings may be applied in interventions aiming to encourage extended working lives in key welfare occupations, which are facing significant staff shortages.

This longitudinal study aimed to identify factors that influence migraines in Korean women nurses using data from the Korea Nurses' Health Study. Among those who participated in Survey 1 (2013-2014) and the follow-up survey (2015-2019), we selected 2605 participants for Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, 521 participants who were newly diagnosed with migraine and 2084 controls using a 1:4 incidence density sampling approach. Consuming coffee (≥ 3 cups: RR = 1.666; 95% CI = 1.175-2.362, < 3 cups: RR = 1.439; 95% CI = 1.053-1.966), being obese (BMI ≥ 25: RR = 1.341, 95% CI = 1.003-1.793), and engaging in vigorous physical activity (RR = 1.010; 95% CI = 1.000-1.019) increased the risk of developing a migraine. Nurses with an annual salary greater than $3500 were less likely to develop migraines (RR = 0.786, 95% CI = 0.631-0.979). The results imply that lifestyle factors, such as the amount of coffee consumption, BMI level, and degree of physical activity could be considered when formulating treatment plans for women who have newly developed migraines.

BACKGROUND: Designing competency-based education (CBE) programmes is a priority in global nursing education for better nursing care for the population. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), object-based education (OBE) remains mainstream in pre-service nursing education programmes. Recently, the Ministry of Health developed a self-assessment tool and quantitatively compared the clinical competency of CBE- and OBE-trained nurses. This study aimed to qualitatively triangulate the results of self-evaluation by exploring perception of supervisors, incumbent CBE-, and OBE-trained nurses in comparison with the competence of the two types of nurses, and to identify influential factors or barriers to their competence in clinical settings. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach with conventional content analysis was applied. Twenty interviews with clinical supervisors who oversaw both CBE- and OBE-trained nurses, 22 focus group discussions (FGDs) with CBE-trained nurses, and 21 FGDs with OBA-trained nurses currently working in health facilities were conducted. Participants of the FGDs were selected from the participants of the DRC self-assessment competency comparison study where there was no statistically significance between CBE- and OBE-trained nurses in the demographic characteristics. Data were analysed in terms of the competencies identified by the Ministry of Health. RESULTS: The supervisors recognised that the CBE-trained nurses had stronger competencies in professional communication, making decisions about health problems, and engaging in professional development, but were weak in clinical skills. This study identified challenges for supervisors in assuring standardised care in health facilities with OBE- and CBE-trained nurses, as well as barriers for CBE-trained nurses as a minority in the workplace in demonstrating their competencies. CONCLUSIONS: The study results support the Ministry of Health's policy to expand CBE in pre-service education programmes but reveal that its slow implementation impedes full utilisation of the acquired competencies at health facilities. Implementation could be accelerated by strengthening cooperation among the Ministry of Health's three human resource departments, and developing and implementing a well-planned, legally binding, long-term CBE reform strategy, including an approach to the Continuing Professional Development system.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the current status of innovative behaviours among nurses in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospitals using latent profile analysis, identify potential subgroups and their population characteristics and explore factors associated with different categories. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Six TCM hospitals in Anhui, China. PARTICIPANTS: From 1 April 2023 to 31 July 2023, a total of 642 registered nurses with more than 1 year of work experience were recruited from the clinical departments of six TCM hospitals using a stratified cluster sampling method. 529 valid questionnaires were recovered, presenting a validity rate of 82.40%. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Data were collected through online surveys containing a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Nurse Innovative Behaviour Scale, the Nurse Adversity Quotient Self-Evaluation Scale and the Conditions for Work Effectiveness Questionnaire-II. Latent profile analysis was performed to identify categorisation features of nurses' innovative behaviour in TCM hospitals. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to investigate associated factors with profile membership. RESULTS: TCM hospital nurses' innovative behaviours were mainly classified into three types of latent profiles: low innovative behaviour (35.3%), moderate innovative behaviour (48.4%) and high innovative behaviour (16.3%). The results of multiple logistic regression analyses indicated that gender, monthly income, department, hospital level, position, nurse competency level, any training attended related to TCM knowledge and skills, adversity quotient level and structural empowerment level were the influencing factors for the potential profiles. CONCLUSIONS: The innovative behaviour of nurses in TCM hospitals can be classified into three categories. Studying the heterogeneity of the innovative behaviour of nurses in TCM hospitals and its associated factors provides evidence for nursing administrators and educators to develop individualised interventions based on each latent characteristic to improve the innovative behaviour of nurses in TCM hospitals. It is of great significance to the heritage and innovative development of TCM nursing.

I propose that moral distress may function as a moral heuristic, and one that misses its mark in signifying a fundamental source for nurses' moral suffering. Epistemic injustice is an insidious workplace wrongdoing that is glossed over or avoided in explicit explanations for nurse moral suffering and is substituted by an emphasis on the nurse's own wrongdoing. I discuss reasons and evidence for considering moral distress as a moral heuristic that obfuscates the role of epistemic injustice as a fundamental constraint on nurses' moral reasoning underlying moral suffering.

BACKGROUND: Medical and health sector employees are always exposed to physical and psychological risk factors, which affects their personal, social and professional performance. It's important to explores the intricate interplay between personality traits, stress levels, and psychosomatic symptoms among nurses as one of the most sensitive jobs in society. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigating the relationship between the personality traits of hardiness and perfectionism with stress and psychosomatic symptoms among nurses. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 340 nurses in Mazandaran, Iran in 2022-2023. The instruments utilized to collect data included four questionnaires, namely Cubasa Hardiness Questionnaire, Tehran Multidimensional Perfectionism Questionnaire, Nursing Stress Questionnaire and Takata and Sakata Psychosomatic Questionnaire. The structural equations modeling was used for path analysis. All analyzes were done using SPSS V.25.0 and AMOS V.24.0 software. RESULTS: The results of the present study revealed that the prevalence of psychosomatic symptoms and stress in nurses was high, and all path coefficients were significant, except for the paths of commitment to stress, challenge to psychosomatic symptoms, self-orientation to psychosomatic symptoms, and community-orientation to psychosomatic symptoms. The results showed that in the final model, the highest coefficient (0.807) is assigned to the other-oriented perfectionism path to psychosomatic symptoms. The weakest coefficient (-0.276) is related to the path of the hardiness component of the challenge to stress. The current research examined the fitting of the proposed model and the suitability of the proposed model was confirmed. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study revealed that psychological factors such as personality traits of hardiness, and perfectionism are among the important and influencing parameters on occupational stress, and psychosomatic symptoms and as a result the efficiency and effectiveness of nurses in working environments. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to implement mitigating and control measures to reduce the mentioned risk factors among nurses in medical settings.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of workplace violence (WPV) against nurses in Oman's psychiatric hospitals and explore associated factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between October and December 2021 and included all tertiary mental healthcare hospitals in Oman (Al Masarra Hospital and Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman). The participants completed a sociodemographic survey and a questionnaire on WPV in the health sector. Results: A total of 106 participants (response rate = 80.3%) were included in this study. Most were female (52.8%) and Omani (72.6%) and aged 30-39 years. WPV prevalence was high (90.6%), with verbal (86.8%) and physical violence (57.5%) being the most common types. WPV incidents were more frequent on weekdays (26.4%) and during morning shifts (34%), while 81.1% of the nurses worked in shifts and had direct physical contact with patients (83.0%). The majority (92.5%) were aware of standardised WPV reporting procedures and 89.7% confirmed the presence of such procedures in hospitals. WPV was more prevalent among nurses in inpatient wards (P = 0.047). Conclusion: WPV against nurses in Omani psychiatric hospitals is alarmingly high. Future studies should investigate contributing factors among healthcare providers and emphasise violence prevention by providing staff nurses with effective training to handle violent incidents involving psychiatric patients.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of venous thromboembolism is steadily increasing in developing nations including Ethiopia. Nurses play a vital role in the prevention of venous thromboembolism. However, the level of nurses' knowledge, practice, and associated factors in venous thromboembolism prevention is not well-known across Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess nurses' knowledge, practice, and associated factors regarding venous-thromboembolism prevention in tertiary Hospitals of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia METHODS: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 339 randomly selected nurses working at tertiary hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A validated questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 25. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to describe and test the association between selected variables. RESULTS: Out of the total 339 participants, only (51.6%) and (45.4%) had adequate knowledge and practice towards venous thromboembolism prevention respectively. Attending in-service training (AOR=1.701, p = 0.044) was significantly associated with knowledge of VTE prevention. Educational level (AOR= 3.871, P = 0.048), work experience (AOR=5.207, P<0.001), work location (AOR= 0.507, P = 0.019), working department (AOR= 2.959, P = 0.048), knowledge level (AOR= 0.477, P=0.005) were significantly associated with better preventive practice. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that nurses' level of knowledge and practice towards venous thromboembolism prevention was inadequate. Nurses' educational level, attending in-service training, work experience, work location, and working department were determinant factors associated with nurses' knowledge and practice towards venous thromboembolism prevention. Therefore, upgrading nurses' educational level and providing in-service training on venous thromboembolism prevention is crucial for positive patient outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Construction and nursing are critical industries. Although both careers involve physically and mentally demanding work, the risks to workers during the COVID-19 pandemic are not well understood. Nurses (both younger and older) are more likely to experience the ill effects of burnout and stress than construction workers, likely due to accelerated work demands and increased pressure on nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we analyzed a large social media data set using advanced natural language processing techniques to explore indicators of the mental status of workers across both industries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: This social media analysis aims to fill a knowledge gap by comparing the tweets of younger and older construction workers and nurses to obtain insights into any potential risks to their mental health due to work health and safety issues. METHODS: We analyzed 1,505,638 tweets published on Twitter (subsequently rebranded as X) by younger and older (aged <45 vs >45 years) construction workers and nurses. The study period spanned 54 months, from January 2018 to June 2022, which equates to approximately 27 months before and 27 months after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. The tweets were analyzed using big data analytics and computational linguistic analyses. RESULTS: Text analyses revealed that nurses made greater use of hashtags and keywords (both monograms and bigrams) associated with burnout, health issues, and mental health compared to construction workers. The COVID-19 pandemic had a pronounced effect on nurses' tweets, and this was especially noticeable in younger nurses. Tweets about health and well-being contained more first-person singular pronouns and affect words, and health-related tweets contained more affect words. Sentiment analyses revealed that, overall, nurses had a higher proportion of positive sentiment in their tweets than construction workers. However, this changed markedly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since early 2020, sentiment switched, and negative sentiment dominated the tweets of nurses. No such crossover was observed in the tweets of construction workers. CONCLUSIONS: The social media analysis revealed that younger nurses had language use patterns consistent with someone experiencing the ill effects of burnout and stress. Older construction workers had more negative sentiments than younger workers, who were more focused on communicating about social and recreational activities rather than work matters. More broadly, these findings demonstrate the utility of large data sets enabled by social media to understand the well-being of target populations, especially during times of rapid societal change.

Nursing is considered indigent and oppressed because of uneven organizational hierarchies and unsatisfactory work environments. This study aimed to highlight the critical aspects of organizational culture in the nursing profession and, in general, those propagating hostile behaviours among female nursing staff that result in dissatisfaction and intention to leave the organization. A quantitative research approach was applied and a survey research strategy was used to collect the data. Convenience sampling was applied and data were collected from female nurses who were easily accessible and willing to participate in the research. A total of 707 questionnaires were collected from 14 hospitals and the data was analyzed using SmartPLS 4. Lack of administrative support and gender discrimination positively affected person-related hostility. In contrast, person-related hostility mediated the relationship between gender discrimination and lack of administrative support with the intention to leave. Direct or indirect person-related hostility factors can severely damage organizational reputation and quality and may cause the loss of employees with specific organizational knowledge and exposure. Losing an experienced employee to a newer one cannot replace the costs incurred on hiring, training, and providing knowledge to older employees. HR managers in organizations should devise strategies and policies that allow for the timely resolution of issues of nursing staff based on fair work performance.

The mortality rates among critically ill patients with COVID-19 have been high. The national and institutional infection control policies and resource shortages caused by the pandemic led patients to undergo deaths without dignity and inevitably changed intensive care unit (ICU) end-of-life care (EOLC) practices. This study explores ICU nurses' experiences of providing EOLC for patients with COVID-19 who died. Eight nurses participated in a qualitative phenomenological study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted from July to September 2022. Colaizzi's data analysis method was used, and the following four main themes emerged: (i) only companion in the death journey; (ii) helping families prepare for death; (iii) EOLC trapped within a framework; and (iv) EOLC in retrospect. To secure high-quality EOLC in ICU, it is important to promote practical support for nurses and EOLC-related discussions/education. Technical support, such as digital communication technologies, should be reinforced to help patients and their families participate in EOLC.

OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between death distress, psychological adjustment, optimism, pessimism and perceived stress among nurses working during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: this study was designed as cross-sectional/cohort. The population of the study involved 408 nurses from Northern Cyprus, which are registered as full members of the Nurse Council. The sample comprised 214 nurses, who volunteered to participate in the study. The study data was collected using a web-based online survey (Demographic form, the Coronavirus Stress Measure, The Optimism and Pessimism Questionnaire, The Brief Adjustment Scale-6, The Death Distress Scale). RESULTS: the results indicated that perceived stress significantly and negatively predicted optimism (ß = -0.21, p < 0.001) and pessimism (ß = 0.38, p < 0.001). Perceived stress had significant and positive predictive effects on psychological adjustment (ß = 0.31, p < 0.001) and death distress (ß = 0.17, p < 0.01). Further analysis results revealed that pessimism mediates the association of stress with psychological adjustment and death distress; however, optimism only mediates the effect of stress on psychological adjustment among nurses. CONCLUSION: a low level of pessimism is effective in strengthening nurses' psychological adjustment skills againt perceived stress and death distress. Nurses should consider behavioral strategies to help reduce the level of pessimism during periods such as pandemics. BACKGROUND: (1) High levels of perceived stress increased higher score of psychological adjustment. (2) Pessimism mediates the association of stress with adjustment and death distress. (3) Optimism only mediates the effect of stress on psychological adjustment among nurses.

PURPOSE: Although the importance of health promotion for nurses is increasing, there is a lack of meta-analyses targeting nurses in the world. This study aimed to identify the effect sizes between the health-promoting behaviors and related variables of nurses working in Korea. METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to the PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines. The literature included in this meta-analysis was published between 1994 and 2022 in core databases such as KMbase, KISS, KoreaMed, ScienceON, DBpia, NAL, RISS, CINAHL, CENTRAL, WoS, PubMed, and hand searched. In this study, the PICO-SD framework was applied with Participants being nurses actively working in various healthcare settings across Korea, and for a more comprehensive search, intervention and comparisons were not set. The outcomes measured were nurses' health-promoting behaviors, assessed using structured tools. The study design included observational studies. The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis and the R software program were used for meta-analysis. RESULTS: In total, 50 articles were selected for the systematic review and meta-analysis. The total effect size of the 50 articles was moderate (correlation effect size [ESr] = 0.30). The individual variables presented in the 50 articles were classified into nine sub-categories according to Pender's Health Promotion Model (HPM). Among them, situational influences demonstrated the largest effect size (ESr = 0.44, number of studies [k] = 2), followed by perceived self-efficacy (ESr = 0.39, k = 10) and activity-related affect (ESr = 0.32, k = 12). CONCLUSIONS: To achieve the optimal health status of nurses through health promotion intervention programs, these effective variables - situational influences, perceived self-efficacy, and activity-related affect - should be considered when developing the intervention program for nurses. BACKGROUND: The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory suggests that an imbalance between job demands and available resources can lead to burnout, negatively affecting job satisfaction. Physical activity is recognized for its positive effects on psychological well-being and could play a crucial role in mitigating burnout and improving job satisfaction, especially in high-demand professions such as nursing. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship between burnout, physical activity, and job satisfaction in Peruvian nurses, using the JD-R theory as a theoretical framework. METHODS: A cross-sectional and explanatory analysis was conducted on a sample of 420 Peruvian nurses, using a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) design to analyze the relationships between burnout, physical activity, and job satisfaction. The instruments included the Ultra-Short Burnout Measure (IUB), the General Job Satisfaction Scale NTP 394, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). RESULTS: The findings showed a significant negative correlation between burnout and physical activity (ß = -.40, P < .001) and between burnout and job satisfaction (ß = -.46, P < .001). Physical activity exhibited a significant positive correlation with job satisfaction (ß = .22, P < .001). Moreover, mediation analysis confirmed that physical activity mediates the relationship between burnout and job satisfaction (ß = -.106, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The findings emphasize the importance of physical activity as a mediator in the relationship between burnout and job satisfaction among Peruvian nurses, highlighting the need to promote physical activity as a strategy to improve workplace well-being. It is suggested that enhancing access to and promotion of physical activity could mitigate the effects of burnout and improve job satisfaction, which is essential for the quality of care and the well-being of nursing staff. These findings underscore the need for organizational and public health strategies that promote a healthy work environment and balance between the demands and resources available.
