ABSTRACT

Several endemic species of Blaps occur in Tunisia, and the species Blaps nefrauensis nefrauensis has been reported in Moulares (urban zone in west-central Tunisia), where it lives and reproduces in home gardens and old buildings. The aim of this work is to study the life cycle of the darkling beetle, considering both field and laboratory rearing conditions. As a result, the beetle species has different developmental stages (egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult) that last about 15 months. Each year during the same period, adults emerge (early summer) and expire (late autumn), larvae hatch (late summer) and pupate (early summer). There is only one generation per year. Females began laying eggs in late July. The eggs were ovoid, white, and about 2.7 mm in length and 1.5 mm in width. Embryogenesis took an average of nine days. The first instar larvae were at initially only 4.5 mm long and ivory white in color. A brief description of the newly egg hatched larva was provided; thus, the nerve fibers innervating the apical setae in the antennae and ligula were detected. Further light microscopic examination of the embryo before hatching from the egg pointed out that the antennal sensilla are protected during the embryogenesis stage.

ABSTRACT

The current investigation was carried out to estimate the protective effect of aqueous extract of Cheatomorpha gracilis (AEC) against High fat Diet (HFD) induced liver damage in mice. The results of the in vitro study showed that AEC have higher antioxidant capacities in the DPPH and hydroxyl radical-scavenging assays. Indeed, many phenolic compounds (gallic acid, quercetin, naringenin, apigenin, kaempferol and rutin) were identified in the AEC. In the animal studies, during 6 weeks, HFD promoted oxidative stress with a rise level of malonaldehyde (MDA), protein carbonyls (PCOs) levels and a significant decrease of the antioxidant enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Interestingly, the treatment with AEC (250 mg/kg body weight) significantly reduced the effects of HFD disorders on some plasmatic liver biomarkers (AST, ALT and ALP) in addition to, plasmatic proteins inflammatory biomarkers (α2 and ß1 decreases / ß2 and γ globulins increases). It can be suggest that supplementation of MECG displays high potential to quench free radicals and attenuates high fat diet promoted liver oxidative stress and related disturbances.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the potential protective effects of melatonin (Mel) against aluminium-induced neurodegenerative changes in aging Wistar rats (24-28months old). Herein, aluminium chloride (AlCl3) (50mg/kg BW/day) was administered by gavage, and melatonin (Mel) was co-administered to a group of Al-treated rats by an intra-peritoneal injection at a daily dose of 10mg/kg BW for four months. The findings revealed that aluminium administration induced a significant decrease in body weight associated with marked mortality for the old group of rats, which was more pronounced in old Al-treated rats. Behavioural alterations were assessed by 'open fields', 'elevated plus maze' and 'Radial 8-arms maze' tests. The results demonstrated that Mel co-administration alleviated neurobehavioral changes in both old and old Al-treated rats. Melatonin was noted to play a good neuroprotective role, reducing lipid peroxidation (TBARs), and enhancing enzymatic (SOD, CAT and GPx) activities in the brain organs of old control and old Al-treated rats. Mel treatment also reversed the decrease of AChE activity in the brain tissues, which was confirmed by histological sections. Overall, the results showed that Mel administration can induce beneficial effects for the treatment of Al-induced neurobehavioral and neurochemical changes in the central nervous system (CNS).

ABSTRACT

Lipomas are extremely common benign soft tissue tumors that are usually subcutaneous and asymptomatic. However, an intramuscular lipoma, occurring adjacent to the proximal radius, may easily cause paralysis of the posterior interosseous nerve because of a specific anatomical relationship of these structures in that area. In this report, we describe an unusual case of a 48-year-old-woman with a posterior interosseous nerve syndrome due to an intramuscular lipoma. The patient had good recovery after surgery and rehabilitation physiotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Acute osteomyelitis of the clavicle accounts for less than 3% of osteomyelitis cases, with its usual location in the middle third. It may be hematogenous, due to contiguity, or secondary to catheterization of the subclavian vein or neck surgery. The diagnosis is often delayed, and clinical symptoms may simulate obstetric brachial plexus palsy in young children. We report a new case of osteomyelitis of the clavicle in a 30-day-old newborn.

ABSTRACT

We report a retrospective study of 20 patients treated for idiopathic cubital tunnel syndrome in a period of 10 years (2002-2011). The average age was 46 years. A profession at risk was present in the majority of cases. The treatment was surgical in all the cases. The indication for surgery was related to the importance of sensory-motor deficit, the long duration of symptoms, and the failure of conservative treatment. Two surgical techniques were used in this work: isolated neurolysis and neurolysis with anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve. There were no complications or recurrence of symptoms. After a mean follow-up of 12 months, our results evaluated thanks to the classification of Bishop were considered as excellent or good in 85% of cases and fair in 15% of cases. Prognosis factors were advanced age (more than 60 years), severity of the disease, and duration of symptoms (more than one year). The management of this affection must go through a better knowledge of the disease, for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, only guarantees for a good result.

ABSTRACT

Obturator dislocation of the hip associated with ipsilateral femoral neck fracture is an unusual injury. We report a case of a 40-year-old man with such a combination of injuries which was treated with an open reduction and internal fixation. He has a good follow-up result. There was no evidence of avascular necrosis on radiographs after 3 years.

ABSTRACT

Distal clavicle fracture accompanied by coracoid process one is a rare injury. Surgical and/or conservative treatments are proposed. We report the case of a 49-year-old woman presenting a distal clavicle fracture associated with a coracoid process one due to a fall on the left shoulder. Both injuries are treated surgically. Per operatively, and through an anterior "strap" approach, the coracoclavicular ligament was seen intact. The distal clavicle fracture was fixed with K-wires and cerclage and the coracoid process was secured by a screw. Active-assisted rehabilitation of the shoulder was initiated 3 weeks after surgery. At the last follow-up of twelve months, the patient had painless full shoulder functions and X-rays show bony union. Early recovery to normal life is possible with surgical treatment in patients with distal clavicle fracture combined with coracoid fracture.

ABSTRACT

The etiology of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the capitellum is unknown but has generally been attributed to repetitive microtrauma or ischemia. We present a case report of a handball player with OCD of the capitellum. Preoperatively, he complained of elbow pain. CT imaging showed the injury. This patient was treated with mosaicplasty harvested from the lateral femoral condyle. He returned to his full former sports activities within 6months of surgery. The continuity of the cartilage layer between the osteochondral graft and the capitellum was shown on CT arthrogram images at 12months after surgery. We believe that mosaicplasty gives successful results with end-stage OCD of the capitellum.

ABSTRACT

AIM: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is common in head-injured patients. Ulnar nerve compression by HO at the elbow is rare. The purpose of this study was to establish a strategy for the management of ulnar nerve compression secondary to HO at the elbow. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors report a retrospective study (2000-2008) of five cases of ulnar nerve compression at the elbow secondary to HO. All patients were male (mean age, 33 years). The HO was secondary to head injury (four cases) and severe burn (one case). According to the Dellon's classification, the ulnar nerve entrapment was severe in two cases and moderate in three. The elbow was ankylosed; the flexion deformity ranged from 60 degrees to 120 degrees. Only in one case was nerve decompression performed before HO maturation. In the other cases, elbow release and nerve decompression were done at the same time, when maturation of HO was achieved. Postoperative outcome assessment was based on the Kleiman and Bishop's score. RESULTS: At 4 years of follow-up, the neurolysis result was excellent in one case, good in three cases, and poor in one. CONCLUSION: It seems that HO is not the direct cause of ulnar nerve compression, but its impairment may be increased by the nerve tension and elbow fixation that it causes. When HO is mature, neurolysis can be combined with elbow release. However, when HO maturation is not achieved early neurolysis associated with anterior transposition should be done without elbow release.

ABSTRACT

Moderate doses of lithium were chronically administered to mice in order to verify whether the cytoprotective effects of lithium could be in part attributed to a molecular protection conferred by stress proteins/chaperones accumulation. In order to reach serum lithium levels within the common therapeutic values, mice were fed for 6 months on food pellets contained 1 g (L1 group) or 2 g (L2 group) lithium carbonate/kg, resulting in serum concentrations of 0.5 and 0.9 mM Li, respectively. Under these experimental conditions, no clinical side-effects were observed. Urea and creatinine concentrations in serum, lipids peroxidation level and activities of catalase, superoxide-dismutase and glutathione-peroxidase in liver and kidney were not significantly different from control values. Although the expression level of the constitutive HSP73 was not significantly modified, HSP72 was found to be down-regulated in kidney after 1 month. In liver, three protein bands were immunodetected by the anti-GRP94 antibody: 98 kDa and 96 kDa proteins corresponding to more or less glycosylated forms and/or phosphorylated forms of GRP94 and a 80 kDa protein probably being a cleavage product of GRP94. The 96 kDa and 80 kDa proteins were significantly up-regulated in liver of lithium-treated mice as compared to controls.
