ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Timely diagnosis plays a critical role in determining melanoma prognosis, prompting the development of deep learning models to aid clinicians. Questions persist regarding the efficacy of clinical images alone or in conjunction with dermoscopy images for model training. This study aims to compare the classification performance for melanoma of three types of CNN models: those trained on clinical images, dermoscopy images, and a combination of paired clinical and dermoscopy images from the same lesion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We divided 914 image pairs into training, validation, and test sets. Models were built using pre-trained Inception-ResNetV2 convolutional layers for feature extraction, followed by binary classification. Training comprised 20 models per CNN type using sets of random hyperparameters. Best models were chosen based on validation AUC-ROC. RESULTS: Significant AUC-ROC differences were found between clinical versus dermoscopy models (0.661 vs. 0.869, p < 0.001) and clinical versus clinical + dermoscopy models (0.661 vs. 0.822, p = 0.001). Significant sensitivity differences were found between clinical and dermoscopy models (0.513 vs. 0.799, p = 0.01), dermoscopy versus clinical + dermoscopy models (0.799 vs. 1.000, p = 0.02), and clinical versus clinical + dermoscopy models (0.513 vs. 1.000, p < 0.001). Significant specificity differences were found between dermoscopy versus clinical + dermoscopy models (0.800 vs. 0.288, p < 0.001) and clinical versus clinical + dermoscopy models (0.650 vs. 0.288, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: CNN models trained on dermoscopy images outperformed those relying solely on clinical images under our study conditions. The potential advantages of incorporating paired clinical and dermoscopy images for CNN-based melanoma classification appear less clear based on our findings.

ABSTRACT

In the context of continuous emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs), one strategy to prevent the severe outcomes of COVID-19 is developing safe and effective broad-spectrum vaccines. Here, we present preclinical studies of a RBD vaccine derived from the Gamma SARS-CoV-2 variant adjuvanted with Alum. The Gamma-adapted RBD vaccine is more immunogenic than the Ancestral RBD vaccine in terms of inducing broader neutralizing antibodies. The Gamma RBD presents more immunogenic B-cell restricted epitopes and induces a higher proportion of specific-B cells and plasmablasts than the Ancestral RBD version. The Gamma-adapted vaccine induces antigen specific T cell immune responses and confers protection against Ancestral and Omicron BA.5 SARS-CoV-2 challenge in mice. Moreover, the Gamma RBD vaccine induces higher and broader neutralizing antibody activity than homologous booster vaccination in mice previously primed with different SARS-CoV-2 vaccine platforms. Our study indicates that the adjuvanted Gamma RBD vaccine is highly immunogenic and a broad-spectrum vaccine candidate.

ABSTRACT

A five-step approach, starting from simple 1,5-disubstituted indoles, has been implemented for the synthesis of diversely substituted indole-pyrido-indene pentacyclic compounds up to 54 % yield via domino radical-mediated processes in the presence of the radical reagents DLP/TTMSS and AIBN/TTMSS. Reactions proceeded with diverse key starting radical cyano-precursors strategically synthesized which were subsequently transformed into the target pentacyclic compounds through an aryl/iminyl radical-mediated domino reactions sequence. In addition to the routine spectroscopic techniques, the structure of radical precursors, as well as, the target pentacyclic products were unequivocally established by single crystal X-ray diffraction, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed synthetic sequence.

The impact of pig slurry (PS) application on the structural dynamics of humic substances (HS) and on the mobility of Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb in a dystrophic Red Nitosol planted with winter forage grasses was evaluated. After four PS applications, the humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) were characterized by spectroscopy techniques allied to chemometrics methods. The metals contents in soil, in HS and in the tissues of plant were quantified. PS application increases the total organic carbon, especially the nonhumic carbon, which contribute to increase FA content. The carbon in FA and HA increases with the highest PS dose applied, especially aliphatic structures in FA and aromatic structures in HA. The amount of Pb and Cu in FA and HA increases respectively, as well as Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb bioavailable. PS applications increase the biomass production in grasses and the metals content accumulated in the tissues. Our study shows that the PS application modifies the structure of SOM, incorporating fragments, and modifying its dynamics, which regulates the dynamics and the accumulation of metals in soils and plants. The association of metals with soluble structures seems to inactivate their toxicity and does not affect plant growth.

ABSTRACT

Crop landraces have unique local agroecological and societal functions and offer important genetic resources for plant breeding. Recognition of the value of landrace diversity and concern about its erosion on farms have led to sustained efforts to establish ex situ collections worldwide. The degree to which these efforts have succeeded in conserving landraces has not been comprehensively assessed. Here we modelled the potential distributions of eco-geographically distinguishable groups of landraces of 25 cereal, pulse and starchy root/tuber/fruit crops within their geographic regions of diversity. We then analysed the extent to which these landrace groups are represented in genebank collections, using geographic and ecological coverage metrics as a proxy for genetic diversity. We find that ex situ conservation of landrace groups is currently moderately comprehensive on average, with substantial variation among crops; a mean of 63% ± 12.6% of distributions is currently represented in genebanks. Breadfruit, bananas and plantains, lentils, common beans, chickpeas, barley and bread wheat landrace groups are among the most fully represented, whereas the largest conservation gaps persist for pearl millet, yams, finger millet, groundnut, potatoes and peas. Geographic regions prioritized for further collection of landrace groups for ex situ conservation include South Asia, the Mediterranean and West Asia, Mesoamerica, sub-Saharan Africa, the Andean mountains of South America and Central to East Asia. With further progress to fill these gaps, a high degree of representation of landrace group diversity in genebanks is feasible globally, thus fulfilling international targets for their ex situ conservation.

BACKGROUND: While resilience has generated a lot of interest in mental health, operationalizing the construct of resilience remains an important challenge. This study aims to evaluate the concordance of two resilience scales that evaluate intrapersonal aspects of resilience in adolescents. METHODS: Cross-sectional evaluation of internal consistency, concordance, and correlation of the Individual Protective Factors Index Questionnaire (IPFI) and the Adolescent Resilience Scale (ARS) in sixth grade students of three low-income public schools in Colombia. RESULTS: 325 adolescents (41.5% female) participated in the study (72.5% response rate). Mean age was 12.1 years (standard deviation [SD]: 1.04). Of a possible score from 1-4, the mean adjusted IPFI score was 3.3 (SD: 0.3; Cronbach's alpha: 0.87). Of a possible score from 21-105, the total ARS score was 76.4 (SD 13.0; Cronbach's alpha: 0.82); both distributions were non-normal and left-skewed. The Lin's concordance correlation coefficient was 0.34 and the Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.52 (p-value < 0.0001 for both). Notably, 10 adolescents (3.1% of the sample) had a score in the lowest quartile in one of the two instruments, and a score in the highest quartile in the other instrument. CONCLUSIONS: There was low concordance between the scales, with notable lack of overlap in who was identified as having "low" levels of resilience. To better elucidate and operationalize the construct of resilience, studies using resilience scales should consider greater focus in understanding what aspects of the construct are being measured and how they relate to meaningful variables (well-being, risk of illness, etc.).

ABSTRACT

The broadnose sevengill shark, Notorynchus cepedianus (Péron, 1807), is a large marine top predator in temperate coastal ecosystems. Some aspects of its life history have been determined, but its growth pattern is yet to be fully understood. The authors used a multi-modelling approach and a sensitivity test to estimate growth parameters from young-of-year (YOY) length data collected off San Antonio Cape (SAC), Argentina, a critical habitat in the Southwest Atlantic Coastal Zone (SACZ). The best selected model, a sex-combined logistic growth model, estimated an asymptotic length (L∞ ) of 92.58 cm TL (95% C.I.: 86.48-105.89 cm), a growth coefficient (K) of 0.006818 days -1 (95% C.I.: 0.004948-0.008777) and a size at birth (L0 ) of 40.73 cm. The predicted annual growth (i.e., L1 - L0 ) was 43.2 cm TL. Males had smaller L0 , higher K and achieved larger sizes after 1 year. The YOY in SAC attained a larger L1 and grew faster than their Australian and South African wild counterparts. The consistent year-round presence of YOY in the SAC highlights the importance of this area as a pupping ground and potential nursery for N. cepedianus; this has direct implications for the allocation of research and management effort for the conservation of this species in the Southwest Atlantic.

BACKGROUND: Few studies about the evolutionary history of the hepatitis E virus (HEV) have been conducted. The aim of our work was to investigate and make inferences about the origin and routes of dispersion of HEV-3 in Argentina. METHODS: Phylogenetic, coalescent and phylogeographic analyses were performed using a 322-bp ORF2 genomic fragment of all HEV-3 sequences with known date and place of isolation published at GenBank until May 2018 (n=926), including 16 Argentinian sequences (isolated from pigs, water and humans). RESULTS: Phylogenetic analysis revealed two clades within HEV-3: abchij and efg. All Argentinian samples were grouped intermingled within clade 3abchij. The coalescent analysis showed that the most recent common ancestor for the clade 3abchij would have existed around the year 1967 (95% highest posterior density (HPD): 1963-1970). The estimated substitution rate was 1.01×10-2 (95%HPD: 9.3×10-3-1.09×10-2) substitutions/site/y, comparable with the rate previously described. The phylogeographic approach revealed a correspondence between phylogeny and place of origin for Argentinian samples, suggesting many HEV introductions in the country, probably from Europe and Japan. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first evolutionary inference of HEV-3 that includes Argentinian strains, showing the circulation of many HEV-3 subtypes, obtained from different sources and places, with recent diversification processes. Introduction: Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease of interest to public health because of its social and economic burden. Identifying infected and sick people with Chagas disease constitutes the first step towards achieving World Health Ooganization's goals for 2020. Objective: To evaluate the reproducibility with gold standard of a rapid diagnostic test for detection of antibodies to T. cruzi; and to propose a diagnostic algorithm for Chagas disease under the point-of-care concept in an area with limited access to health care coverage. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed to detect antibodies to T. cruzi in 151 indigenous volunteers belonging to three ethnic groups of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. Rapid tests-PDR SD BIOLINE Chagas Ab were implemented in the field versus confirmation in the laboratory using two standardized serological methods (ELISAs). Results: The results show that 19,2 percent seroreactivity for T. cruzi was found among the entire population screening. The highest rate of human infection with T. cruzi was detected in the Wiwa community. No significant differences between rapid diagnostic test and the standard techniques (ELISAs) were found. Sensitivity, specificity and concordance for RDT were 100 percent (Kappa: 1,0). Conclusions: The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta continues to be a hyperendemic area for Chagas disease. The area is difficult to access and has low or no primary health care coverage, making the assessed rapid diagnostic test a useful tool for screening programs and defining treatment and control plans, which represents the first approach at establishing a point-of-care testing strategy for endemic countries for Chagas disease(AU)


Introducción: La enfermedad de Chagas es una enfermedad desatendida de interés en salud pública por su carga social y económica. Identificar personas infectadas y enfermas con el mal de Chagas constituye el primer paso para alcanzar los objetivos de la Organización Mundial de la Salud para el 2020. Objetivo: Evaluar la reproducibilidad de una prueba de diagnóstico rápida para la detección de anticuerpos contra T. cruzi; y proponer un algoritmo de diagnóstico para enfermedad de Chagas bajo el concepto de uso de tecnologías en el lugar de atención en áreas de acceso limitados a los servicios de salud. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de corte transversal para la detección de anticuerpos para T. cruzi a 151 indígenas voluntarios pertenecientes a tres grupos étnicos de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. Se implementó pruebas rápidas-PDR SD BIOLINE Chagas Ab en campo versus la confirmación en el laboratorio mediante dos métodos serológicos estandarizados (ELISAs). Resultados: Se encontró el 19,2 por ciento de seroreactividad para T. cruzi entre toda la población estudiada. La tasa más alta de infección humana por T. cruzi se detectó en la comunidad Wiwa. No hubo diferencias significativas entre la prueba de diagnóstico rápida y las técnicas estandarizadas (ELISAS). La sensibilidad, especificidad y concordancia para la PDR fue del 100 por ciento (Kappa: 1,0). Conclusiones: La Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta continúa siendo un área hiperendémica para la enfermedad de Chagas. Dado que es un área de difícil acceso, con baja o nula cobertura en atención primaria en salud, la prueba de diagnóstico rápida evaluada se convierte en una herramienta útil como prueba de elección para programas de tamización y definir planes de acción de tratamiento y control, y representa el primer acercamiento de uso de tecnologías en el sitio de atención para el diagnóstico rápido en países endémicos para la enfermedad(AU)

ABSTRACT

The unique lignocellulosic and solvent-extractive chemical constituents of most natural fibers are rich in natural polymers and bioactive molecules that can be exploited for biomaterial formulation. However, although natural fibers' main constituents have been already incorporated as material reinforcement and improve surface bioactivity of polymeric materials, the use of the whole natural fibers as bioactive fillers remains largely unexplored. Thus, we put forward the formulation of natural fiber filling and functionalization of biomaterials by studying the chemical composition of cocoa bean shells (CBS) and proposing the fabrication and characterization of polylactic acid (PLA) and CBS-based composite by solvent-casting. As was expected from previous studies of agro-industrial wastes, the main components of CBS were to cellulose (42.23 wt.%), lignin (22.68 wt.%), hemicellulose (14.73 wt.%), and solvent extractives (14.42 wt.%). Structural analysis (FTIR) confirms the absence of covalent bonding between materials. Thermal degradation profiles (DSC and TGA) showed similar mass losses and thermal-reaction profiles for lignocellulosic-fibers-based composites. The mechanical behavior of the PLA/CBS composite shows a stiffer material behavior than the pristine material. The cell viability of Vero cells in the presence of the composites was above 94%, and the hemolytic tendency was below 5%, while platelet aggregation increased up to 40%. Antioxidant activity was confirmed with comparable 2,2-diphe-277 nyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free-radical scavenging than Vitamin C even for PLA/CBS composite. Therefore, the present study elucidates the significant promise of CBS for bioactive functionalization in biomaterial-engineering, as the tested composite exhibited high biocompatibility and strong antioxidant activity and might induce angiogenic factors' release. Moreover, we present an eco-friendly alternative to taking advantage of chocolate-industry by-products.

ABSTRACT

Human adenoviruses (HAdV) are one of the most frequent causes of respiratory infections around the world, causing mild to severe disease. In Argentina, many studies focused on the association of HAdV respiratory infection with severe disease and fatal outcomes leading to the discovery in 1984 of a genomic variant 7h associated with high fatality. Although several molecular studies reported the presence of at least 4 HAdV species (B, C, D and E) in Argentina, few sequences were available in the databases. In this study, sequences from the hexon gene region were obtained from 141 patients as a first approach to assess the genetic diversity of HAdVs circulating in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Phylogenetic analysis of these sequences and others recovered from public databases confirmed the circulation of the four above-mentioned species represented by 11 genotypes, with predominance in species B and C and shifts in their proportion in the studied period (2000 to 2018). The variants detected in Argentina, for most of the genotypes, were similar to those already described in other countries. However, uncommon lineages belonging to genotypes C2, C5 and E4 were detected, which might indicate the circulation of local variants and will deserve further studies of whole-genome sequences.

There are not many direct comparisons of anxiety and depression symptoms between medicine students and the general population. This study aimed to determine the type of anxiety and depression symptoms at a medical school in Bogota (Colombia), and to compare the findings with population data. All students enrolled at a medical school were invited to participate in 2017. The Self-Reporting Questionnaire was applied to measure anxious and depressive symptoms. These findings were compared with data from the National Survey of Mental Health 2015 that were obtained with the same instrument in the same age range (18-25 years). A total of 554 students participated in the survey (70% response rate); 477 were between 18 and 25 years old. Anxiety symptoms (≥5) were reported by 44.9% of the medical students and 6.8% of the general population, and depression symptoms (≥7) were reported by 33.9% and 2.6%, respectively. The most prevalent symptoms reported by the medical students were fatigue, lack of sleep, and feeling tired all the time. In turn, the general population reported headaches, fear, nervousness, tension, and uneasiness. All comparisons showed p-values < 0.01. As prevalence is higher and symptom profile is different, specific policies are needed to reduce risk throughout medical degree programmes.

Phenomenon: Mental health problems among medical students are a worrisome issue; recent studies have shown that one-third may be suffering major depressive disorder and one out of ten had suicidal ideation. Few studies have evaluated the association of medical students' mental health and their sexual orientation. This study aimed to evaluate differences in mental health indicators among medical students with diverse sexual orientations at a South American medical school. Approach: This study is a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data obtained through an electronic survey. The survey assessed demographics, academic variables, and several mental health scales and indexes, including: World Health Organization Well-being Index, Satisfaction With Life Scale, Family APGAR (Adaptability, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolve), Self-Reporting Questionnaire, Athens Insomnia Scale, Eating Attitudes Test, and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Sexual orientation was assessed using self-identification and responses dichotomized as heterosexual and non-heterosexual. Findings: 554 students completed the survey (response rate: 70%). Mean age was 20.6 years, and the sample was 58.7% women. Eighty-two participants (14.8%) self-identified as non-heterosexual; this group comprised mostly males, fewer of whom lived with their family, and more of whom used loans or scholarships to pay university tuition fees. After adjustment for sex and tuition fee payment, non-heterosexual orientation was significantly associated (adjusted Odds Ratios [aOR] above 3.00) with rating mental health as bad, self-perceiving a need for mental health evaluation/treatment, and reporting last-year use of psychiatric medication. Lastly, non-heterosexual respondents reported more frequent psychiatric symptoms (depression/anxiety scores, suicidal ideation, eating disorder symptoms and substance use) with an aOR between 2.17 and 2.51. Insights: This study suggests that self-identified non-heterosexual medical students exhibit worse mental health outcomes evaluated through validated self-report scales and subjective perception of mental health status. This report specifically indicates that non-heterosexual medical students report family dysfunction more often and have less social support, which serve as additional risk factors. Future studies must assess social support, clarify the impact of family and peer support in mental health problems, and explore students' views on their sexual identity and the burden imposed by experiences of discrimination.

ABSTRACT

HIV-1 is characterized by its ability to mutate and recombine even at polymerase (pol) gene. However, pol-gene diversity is limited due to functional constraints. The aim of this study was to characterize longitudinally, by next-generation sequencing (NGS), HIV-1 variants based on pol-gene sequences, at intra- and inter-host level, from acute/early to chronic stages of infection, in the absence of antiretroviral therapy. Ten men who have sex with men (MSM) were recruited during primary infection and yearly followed for five years. Even after a maximum of a five-year follow-up period, the phylogenetic analysis of HIV-1 pol-gene sequences showed a host-defined structured pattern, with a predominance of purifying selection forces during the follow-up. MSM had been acutely infected by different HIV-1 variants mainly ascribed to pure subtype B, or BF recombinant variants and showed different genetic mosaicism patterns that last until the chronic stage, representing a major challenge for prevention strategies.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) primary drug resistance mutations (DRMs) influence the long-term therapeutic effects of antiretroviral treatment (ART). Drug-resistance genotyping based on polymerase gene sequences obtained by next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed using samples from 10 ART-naïve HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM; P1-P10) from the acute/early to chronic stage of infection. Three of the 10 subjects exhibited the presence of major (abundance, ≥ 20%) viral populations carrying DRM at early/acute stage that later, at the chronic stage, dropped drastically (V106M) or remained highly abundant (E138A). Four individuals exhibited additional DRMs (M46I/L; I47A; I54M, L100V) as HIV minority populations (abundance, 2-20%) that emerged during the chronic stage but ephemerally.

ABSTRACT

Calculating forward and inverse kinematics for robotic agents is one of the most time-intensive tasks when controlling the robot movement in any environment. This calculation is then encoded to control the motors and validated in a simulator. The feedback produced by the simulation can be used to correct the code or to implement the code can be implemented directly in the robotic agent. However, the simulation process executes instructions that are not native to the robotic agents, extending development time or making it preferable to validate the code directly on the robot, which in some cases might result in severe damage to it. The use of Domain-Specific Languages help reduce development time in simulation tasks. These languages simplify code generation by describing tasks through an easy-to-understand language and free the user to use a framework or programming API directly for testing purposes. This article presents the language PyDSLRep, which is characterized by the connection and manipulation of movement in mobile robotic agents in the V-Rep simulation environment. This language is tested in three different environments by twenty people, against the framework given by V-Rep, demonstrating that PyDSLRep reduces the average development time by 45.22%, and the lines of code by 76.40% against the Python framework of V-Rep.

Resumen Introducción: La lepra es una enfermedad milenaria y socialmente estigmatizadora, cuyo perfil de mortalidad en la región de las Américas cambió recién a partir de 1981 con la introducción de la poliquimioterapia. Como parte de la región, Argentina también ha sido parte de ese proceso, con sus particularidades económico-sociales y políticas. Este trabajo analiza la mortalidad producida por la lepra en Argentina en los últimos 35 años y su relación con el contexto sanitario de este país. Metodología: se trata de un trabajo de tipo cuantitativo, transversal y descriptivo, con perspectiva sociodemográfica. Se calculan tasas de mortalidad específicas por sexo, edad y lugar de residencia para Argentina entre 1980 y 2014, a partir de datos oficiales obtenidos de organismos nacionales y de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud. Resultados: se observa una disminución de la mortalidad por lepra en el país, de aproximadamente un 79 % en el período estudiado, con variaciones de su intensidad que concuerdan con acciones de salud pública aplicadas. Esta mortalidad es mayor en hombres, aumenta a partir de los 45 años de edad y las provincias más afectadas son las del norte del país. Conclusiones: las políticas públicas en materia de salud destinadas a la disminución de la mortalidad por lepra han sido eficaces a corto plazo, pero la falta de mantenimiento de las mismas está produciendo un resurgimiento de esta causa de muerte.


ABSTRACT Introduction: Leprosy is an old and socially stigmatizing disease, whose mortality profile in the region of the Americas changed only since 1981 with the introduction of polychemotherapy. As part of the region, Argentina has also been part of that process, with its economic-social and political particularities. This paper analyzes the mortality caused by leprosy in Argentina in the last 35 years, and its relationship with the health context of this country. Methodology: This is a quantitative, transversal and descriptive work, with a socio-demographic perspective. Specific mortality rates are calculated by sex, age and place of residence, for Argentina between 1980 and 2014, based on official data obtained from national organizations and the Pan American Health Organization. Results: There is a decrease in leprosy mortality in the country, approximately 79% in the period studied, with variations in its intensity that are consistent with public health actions applied. This mortality is higher in men, increases from 45 years of age and the most affected provinces are those in the north of the country. Conclusions: Public health policies aimed at reducing leprosy mortality have been effective in the short term, but the lack of maintenance is causing a resurgence of this cause of death.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between several whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure estimates and back pain-related work absence. METHODS: Exposures (based on the weighted daily root mean square acceleration, A(8); the daily vibration dose value, VDV(8); and the daily equivalent static compression dose, Sed(8)) of 2302 workers during 4 years were estimated using each worker's monthly vehicle operation records and WBV measurements from 11 different types of heavy equipment vehicles in a large coal mine. Company payroll data provided work absence during the concurrent 4 years of exposure. Cox regression models estimated the associations between the different WBV metrics and time to first work absence related to back pain. An adjusted R2 statistic provided a measure of model fit. RESULTS: All estimated metrics of WBV exposures were positively and significantly associated with back pain-related absence. HRs varied from 2.03 to 12.39 for every 0.21 m/s2 increase in the A(8)-based exposures; from 1.03 to 1.18 for every 1.72 m/s1.75 increase in VDV(8)-based exposures; and from 1.04 to 1.07 for every 0.06 MPa increase in Sed(8)-based exposures. Models using the estimated VDV(8) metric for the z axis fit the data best as measured by the R2 statistic. CONCLUSION: Higher WBV exposures were associated with back pain-related absences in this population, which appears after a few years of follow-up. Introducing controls to lower exposure levels may help reduce back pain-related work absences.

Introducción: La escala de coma de Glasgow (ECG) es una escala mundialmente reconocida para la clasificación de pacientes con trauma craneoencefálico de acuerdo a su compromiso neurológico. Esta escala evalúa la apertura ocular, la respuesta verbal y la respuesta motora. La neuroanatomía funcional representa un compromiso secuencial para el descenso en el puntaje de cada uno de estos ítems. El objetivo de esta revisión es describir la anatomía del sistema reticular activador ascendente (SRAA), la anatomía funcional del lenguaje, la anatomía del tallo cerebral y de las vías motoras que representan cada ítem evaluado por la ECG. Materiales y métodos: Se hizo una revisión narrativa bibliográfica de las principales vías para cada ítem de la ECG. Resultados: Las principales vías en relación con la apertura ocular se concentran en las vías del SRAA, las vías de la respuesta verbal incluyen las vías del lenguaje y las vías que provienen del putamen y del cerebelo que regulan la emisión del lenguaje, mientras que las vías que regulan la respuesta motora principalmente se relacionan con la vía piramidal, el sistema rubro-espinal y vestíbulo-espinal. Conclusiones: El descenso del puntaje en los tres ítems que evalúa la ECG se relacionan con vías específicas que predominan en los ganglios basales y en el tallo cerebral.


Introduction: The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a globally recognized scale for the classification of patients with traumatic brain injury according to their neurological impairment. This scale evaluates the ocular opening, the verbal response and the motor response. Functional neuroanatomy represents a sequential decrease in the score of each of these items. The objective of this review is to describe the anatomy of the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS), the functional anatomy of the language, and the anatomy of the brainstem and the motor pathways that represent each item evaluated by the GCS. Materials and methods: A narrative literature review of the main routes for each item of the scale was performed. Results: The main pathways in relation to the ocular opening are concentrated in the ARAS, the verbal response pathways include the language pathways and the connections that come from the putamen and the cerebellum that regulate the production of the language, while the pathways that regulate the motor response mainly relate to the pyramidal tract, the rubro-spinal and vestibulo-spinal systems. Conclusions: The decline of the score in the three items that evaluates the GCS is related to specific pathways that predominate in the basal ganglia and in the brainstem.

ABSTRACT

Counting the number of pedestrians in urban environments has become an area of interest over the past few years. Its applications include studies to control vehicular traffic lights, urban planning, market studies, and detection of abnormal behaviors. However, these tasks require the use of intelligent algorithms of high computational demand that need to be trained in the environment being studied. This article presents a novel method to estimate pedestrian flow in uncontrolled environments by using the fractal dimension measured through the box-counting algorithm, which does not require the use of image pre-processing and intelligent algorithms. Four scenarios were used to validate the method presented in this article, of which the last scene was a low-light surveillance video, showing experimental results with a mean relative error of 4.92% when counting pedestrians. After comparing the results with other techniques that depend on intelligent algorithms, we can confirm that this method achieves improved performance in the estimation of pedestrian traffic.
