ABSTRACT

Two novel green ß-substituted ZnII-porphyrins, G1 and G2, based on a 4D-π-1A type substitution pattern have been synthesized. Their enhanced push-pull character, by reduction of H-L energy gaps, promotes broadening and red-shifting of absorption bands. The effective synthetic pathway and the remarkable spectroscopic properties make G2 ideal for BIPV application.

ABSTRACT

The introduction of alkoxy chains in the molecular architecture of meso push-pull porphyrins is of paramount importance aiming at high performing dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on these specific sensitizers. Recently, we have demonstrated that the same approach is fruitful even if it is applied to tetraarylporphyrins with an acceptor/anchoring substituent in the ß-pyrrolic position. In particular, among the ortho-ortho, the ortho-para and the ortho-functionalization of the aryl rings with an octyloxy chain, we identified the latter as the most performing in the series, showing a good balance between the dye loading and the reduction of π-π aggregation. Herein, focusing our attention on the mono-ortho-functionalized molecular structure, we have investigated the effect of the alkoxy chain length and nature on the reduction of dye-to-dye aggregation as well as on the enhancement of light harvesting capabilities, finding an almost linear relationship between the device photon conversion efficiency (PCE) and the alkoxy chain length both in the presence and in the absence of a co-disaggregating agent.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common inherited polyneuropathy. At the moment there is no pharmacological therapy for this pathology and the conservative treatment is mostly based on rehabilitation program. Moreover there is no medical consensus on it and the perception of its efficacy is mostly clinician-oriented. AIM: To evaluate, through ad hoc self-administered questionnaires, the patient and family/caregiver perspective on rehabilitation access and perceived benefit from it. DESIGN: Observational survey study. SETTING: Clinical and genetic records of in and out-patients of third level hospitals and a patients association (ACMT-Rete) and familiar/caregiver. POPULATION: Patients affected by CMT and familiar/caregiver. RESULTS: Questionnaires showed that patients perceive physical and mental benefit from rehabilitation, but also perceived that do not perform the best rehabilitation program for their pathology. Familiar and caregiver, are not sure that rehabilitation is effective for their kin, probably because the benefits are too small to be seen by someone other than the patient. CONCLUSION: The study shows as the lack of a consensus on rehabilitation tailored on CMT patients need is perceived by patients and familiar/caregiver. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: The knowledge of patients perception is very important in order to obtain the best rehabilitation program for CMT disease.

ABSTRACT

Malononitrilamide 715 (FK778) is a new class of immunosuppressant, derived from the active metabolite of leflunomide A77 1726. We investigated the efficacy of two different immunosuppressive induction protocols with tacrolimus plus FK778 followed by FK778 monotherapy. In a swine model of small bowel transplantation, we observed three groups, divided by different therapy regimens: group 1 (n = 5): no immunosuppressant (control group); group 2 (n = 10): oral tacrolimus (from postoperative day [POD] 0 to 30) and FK778 (from POD 0 to 60); group 3 (n = 8): oral tacrolimus, as group 2, and FK778 (from POD 7 to POD 60). Median survival was 11, 60, and 21 days in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. In group 1 all animals died of acute rejection; in group 2 the causes of death were technical complication (n = 1) and sepsis (n = 1); in group 3, one animal died from obstruction, two from pneumonia, one from peritonitis, one from sepsis. Group 2 accounted for 0.5 infection episode/animal versus 0.62 in group 3 (P < .05). Acute rejection was absent or mild in 66% and 75% of group 3 and 2 biopsies, respectively (P < .05). The D-xylose absorption curves from groups 2 and 3 were similar to those of the nontransplanted healthy animals. In conclusion, FK778 monotherapy after a consistent induction period with tacrolimus combined immunosuppression is able to extend survival and preserve optimal absorptive capacity of the small bowel allograft in our pig model. The association of tacrolimus and FK778 from day 1, compared to the delayed administration of FK778 from day 7, results in a significant reduction of infections and postoperative complications.

ABSTRACT

Highly repeated nuclear DNA sequences from suspension cultured cells of Oryza sativa L. cv. 'Roncarolo' have been cloned in pBR322. Ten clones with specific digestion patterns have been randomly selected. Nine sequences appear to be organized in a clustered tandem array while one is interpersed in the rice genome. The clones have been used to gather information on: (a) their modulation in cultured cells as compared to whole plant and (b) their distribution in different rice cultivars belonging to the Japonica or Indica subspecies of Oryza sativa L. Hybridization with nuclear DNA isolated either from suspension or from seedlings of the 'Roncarolo' cultivar revealed extensive quantitative variations, with most cloned sequences showing amplification (up to 75-fold) in cultured cells. Hybridization with nuclear DNA isolated from seedlings or suspension cultured cells from different cultivars belonging to the Japonica or to the Indica sub-species of O. sativa have shown that (a) amplification also occurs in a similar pattern in the case of DNA from the other tested suspension cultured cell types but not in the case of DNA from seedlings; (b) in some cases the tested sequences show minor but significant variations in different rice accessions.
