ABSTRACT

Given the limitations of micromechanical experiments and molecular dynamics simulations, the normal compression process of clay aggregates was simulated under different vertical pressures (P), numbers of particles, loading methods, and environments by a Gay-Berne potential model. On the basis of the variations of particle orientation and the distribution of stacks, the evolution of deformation and stresses was elucidated. The results showed that the effects of the pressure level and loading environment on the deformation were significant. In the range of 0.1-10 MPa, the changes in the void ratio were essentially the evolution of the distribution of stacks determined by attractive short-range van der Waals interactions. The deformation under constant pressure was larger than that under step loading. Because the interactions between clay particles were mainly controlled by mechanical force when in the range of 40-100 MPa, the void ratios under various loading conditions were consistent. It was also found that changes in three-dimensional stresses during compression were dependent on those of the distribution of stacks. In the vacuum environment, owing to the lateral movement of interlocked small stacks, the horizontal stress decreased. The lateral pressure coefficients (k) were greater in an atmospheric environment because the anisotropic particle orientation was relatively less obvious. In the range of 10-100 MPa, when the loading path became longer, k was similar in vacuum but became smaller in an atmosphere. If the initial loading pressure was increased, the number of large stacks sharply increased and the anisotropy was significant in a vacuum environment, which was less prone to lateral expansion. In contrast, more consistent particle arrangements were maintained in an atmosphere. This work will be conducive to explaining experimental observations of long-term ripening.

ABSTRACT

Rice cadmium (Cd) and microplastics are prevalent contaminants, posing a co-exposure threat to humans by means of dietary intake. To assess whether co-exposure of microplastics affects the bioavailability of rice Cd, mice were exposed to Cd-contaminated rice with microplastic co-exposure. We found that polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and polyamide (PA) microplastic co-exposure via diet consumption (2 µg g-1) caused 1.17-1.38-fold higher Cd accumulation in tissue of mice fed by Cd-rice. For mice with co-exposure of PE microplastics, the higher rice-Cd bioavailability corresponded to colonization of Lactobacillus reuteri (38.9 % vs 17.5 %) in the gut compared to control mice, which caused higher production of gut metabolites particularly peptides, likely causing a 'side effect' of elevating Cd solubility in the intestinal lumen. In addition, abundance of sphingosine 1-phosphate in the gut of mice was reduced under PE microplastic exposure, which may reduce intracellular calcium ions (Ca2+) in enterocytes and form a weaker competition in pumping of intracellular Ca2+ and Cd2+ across the basolateral membrane of enterocytes, leading to higher Cd2+ transport efficiency. The results suggest elevated Cd exposure risk from rice consumption with microplastic co-exposure at environmentally relevant low concentrations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a distressing condition that affects approximately 25-80% of patients following surgery for rectal cancer. LARS is characterized by debilitating bowel dysfunction symptoms, including fecal incontinence, urgent bowel movements, and increased frequency of bowel movements. Although biofeedback therapy has demonstrated effectiveness in improving postoperative rectal control, the research results have not fulfilled expectations. Recent research has highlighted that stimulating the pudendal perineal nerves has a superior impact on enhancing pelvic floor muscle function than biofeedback alone. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a combined approach integrating biofeedback with percutaneous electrical pudendal nerve stimulation (B-PEPNS) in patients with LARS through a randomized controlled trial (RCT). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In this two-armed multicenter RCT, 242 participants with LARS after rectal surgery will be randomly assigned to undergo B-PEPNS (intervention group) or biofeedback (control group). Over 4 weeks, each participant will undergo 20 treatment sessions. The primary outcome will be the LARS score. The secondary outcomes will be anorectal manometry and pelvic floor muscle electromyography findings and the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Colorectal 29 (EORTC QLQ-CR29) scores. Data will be collected at baseline, post-intervention (1 month), and follow-up (6 months). DISCUSSION: We anticipate that this study will contribute further evidence regarding the efficacy of B-PEPNS in alleviating LARS symptoms and enhancing the quality of life for patients following rectal cancer surgery. ABSTRACT

Activatable probes with a higher signal-to-background ratio and accuracy are essential for monitoring liver cancer as well as intraoperative fluorescence navigation. However, the presence of only one biomarker is usually not sufficient to meet the high requirement of a signal-to-background ratio in cancer surveillance, leading to the risk of misdiagnosis. In this work, a dual-locked activation response probe, Si-NTR-LAP, for nitroreductase and leucine aminopeptidase was reported. This dual-locked probe provides better tumor recognition and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than that of single-locked probes (Si-LAP and Si-NTR). In both the subcutaneous tumor model and the more complex orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma model, the probe was able to identify tumor tissue with high specificity and accurately differentiate the boundaries between tumor tissue and normal tissue. Therefore, the dual-locked probe may provide a new and practical strategy for applying to real patient tumor tissue samples.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The optimal fluid management strategy for patients undergoing cardiac surgery was controversial regarding fluid volume and intraoperative fluid types. This study aimed to assess the correlation between colloids and crystalloids used for perioperative fluid therapy in cardiac surgery patients and postoperative prognosis. METHODS: The Ovid MEDLINE(R) ALL, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched for eligible studies on fluid management strategies using colloids and crystalloids for cardiac surgery patients published before August 25th, 2023. RESULTS: Ten randomized controlled trials met the eligibility criteria. Compared to the use of crystalloids, the use of colloids, including hydroxyethyl starch (HES), albumin, and gelatine, did not show any differences in mortality, transfusion, acute kidney injury, and atrial fibrillation rates, postoperative blood loss, the length of hospital stay, or the length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay. The results of this meta-analysis showed that the crystalloid group had significantly reduced postoperative chest tube output compared to the colloid group. In the subgroup analysis, the amount of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) infused was significantly lower when using fluid management in the ICU and when using isotonic crystalloids compared to the colloids. In addition, when using fluid management in the ICU, patients in the colloid group had a significant increase in urine volume 24 h after surgery. However, other related factors, including the type of crystalloid solution, type of colloidal solution, and timing of liquid management, did not affect most outcomes. CONCLUSION: Both colloids and crystalloids could be used as alternatives for perioperative fluid management after cardiac surgery. The use of crystalloids significantly reduced the postoperative chest tube output, and the need for FFP infusion decreased significantly with the use of isotonic crystalloids or fluid management during the ICU stay. ICU patients in the colloid group had higher urine output 24 h after surgery. In addition, although the infusion method was not related to most outcomes, the rates of red blood cell and FFP transfusion and postoperative blood loss in the crystalloid group seemed to be lower, which needed to be further studied in high-quality and large-sample RCTs. ABSTRACT

Peach brown rot, attributed to Monilinia fructicola, presents a significant threat to postharvest peach cultivation, causing losses of up to 80%. With an increasing number of countries, spearheaded by the European Union, imposing bans on chemical agents in fruit production, there is a growing interest in mining highly active antibacterial compounds from biological control strains for postharvest disease management. In this study, we highlight the unique ability of Streptomyces lincolnensis strain JCP1-7 to inhibit M. fructicola sporulation, despite its limited antimicrobial efficacy. Through GC-MS analysis, eucalyptol was identified as the key compound. Fumigation of diseased fruits with eucalyptol at a concentration of 0.0335 µg cm-3 demonstrated an in vivo inhibition rate against M. fructicola of 93.13%, completely suppressing spore formation. Transcriptome analysis revealed the impact of eucalyptol on multiple pathogenesis-related pathways, particularly through the inhibition of catalase 2 (Cat2) expression. Experiments with a MfCat2 knockout strain (ΔMfCat2) showed reduced pathogenicity and sensitivity to JCP1-7 and eucalyptol, suggesting MfCat2 as a potential target of JCP1-7 and eucalyptol against M. fructicola. Our findings elucidate that eucalyptol produced by S. lincolnensis JCP1-7 inhibits M. fructicola sporulation by regulating MfCat2, thereby effectively reducing postharvest peach brown rot occurrence. The use of fumigation of eucalyptol offers insights into peach brown rot management on a large scale, thus making a significant contribution to agricultural research.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the intraoperative and postoperative outcomes of a trans-umbilical single-site plus one robot-assisted surgery and a trans-umbilical single-site laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of choledochal cysts. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 49 children diagnosed with choledochal cysts who were admitted to our hospital between June 2020 and December 2023. Among these patients, 24 underwent a trans-umbilical single-site plus one Da Vinci robot-assisted surgery (the robot group) and 25 underwent a trans-umbilical single-site laparoscopic-assisted surgery (the laparoscopic group). We compared differences in intraoperative and postoperative outcomes between the two groups. Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups of patients in terms of gender, age, weight, clinical symptoms, maximum cyst diameter, type, postoperative complications, and facial expression, leg movement, activity, crying, and comfortability (FLACC) scoring (p > 0.05). Compared with the patients in the laparoscopic group, those in the robot group had less intraoperative bleeding [10 (8-12) vs. 15 (11.5-18) ml, p < 0.001] and required less postoperative drainage tube indwelling time [5 (4-6) vs. 7 (5.5-8) day, p < 0.001], less postoperative fasting time [4 (3-4) vs. 6 (5-7) days, p < 0.001], and less postoperative hospitalization time [6 (6-7) vs. 8 (6-10) days, p < 0.001], but they required more operative time [385.5 (317.0-413.3) vs. 346.0 (287.0-376.5) min, p = 0.050] and consumed more hospitalization expenses (79,323 ± 3,124 vs. 31,121 ± 2,918 yuan, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The results of this study showed a shorter hospitalization time, quicker postoperative recovery, and less tissue damage but a higher cost and a longer operation time in patients who chose robotic surgery rather than laparoscopic surgery. With the continuous expansion of the scale of installed robot-assisted surgical systems and the gradual accumulation of the technical experience of surgeons, robot-assisted surgery may slowly surpass, and shows a trend to replace, laparoscopy because of its advantages.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the impact of EIT-guided yoga breathing training on postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) for esophageal cancer patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS Total of 62 patients underwent radical resections of esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer patients were randomized to the standard care group, or the intervention group receiving an additional complete breathing exercise under the guidance of EIT in AICU. Following extubation after the esophagectomy, pulmonary functions were evaluated by EIT with center of ventilation (CoV), dependent silent spaces (DSS), and non-dependent silent spaces (NSS). RESULTS Sixty-one older esophageal cancer patients (31 in the Control group and 30 in the EIT group) were included in the final analysis. Forty-four patients experienced pulmonary complications after esophagectomy, 27 (87.1%) in the Control group and 17 (36.7%) in the EIT group (RR, 0.42 (95% CI: 0.26, 0.69). The most common pulmonary complication was pleural effusion, with an incidence of 30% in the EIT group and 74.2% in the Control group, with RR of 0.40 (95% CI: 0.23, 0.73). Time for the first pulmonary complication was significantly longer in the EIT group than in the Control group (hazard ratio, HR, 0.43; 95% CI 0.21 to 0.87; P=0.019). Patients in the EIT group had significantly higher scores in CoV, DSS, and NSS than in the Control group. CONCLUSIONS Guided by EIT, the addition of the postoperative breathing exercise to the standardized care during AICU could further improve pulmonary function, and reduce postoperative pulmonary complications after esophagectomy.

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an auto-inflammatory peripheral nerve disease. Dendritic cell-mediated T cell polarization is of pivotal importance in demyelinating lesions of peripheral nerves and nerve roots. However, the regulatory function of VX-509 (Decernotinib)-modified tolerogenic dendritic cells (VX-509-tolDCs) during immune remodeling following GBS remains unclear. Here, we used experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN) as a model to investigate these aspects of GBS. METHODS: DCs were treated with varying concentrations of VX-509 (0.25, 1, and 4 µM) or served as a control using 10-8 M 1,25-(OH)2D3. Flow cytometry was employed to assess the apoptosis, phenotype, and capacity to induce T cell responses of the treated DCs. In the in vivo experiments, EAN mice received administration of VX-509-tolDCs or 1,25-(OH)2D3-tolDCs via the tail vein at a dose of 1x106 cells/mouse on days 5, 9, 13, and 17. RESULTS: VX-509 inhibited the maturation of DCs and promoted the development of tolDCs. The function of antigen-specific CD4 + T cells ex vivo was influenced by VX-509-tolDCs. Furthermore, the adoptive transfer of VX-509-tolDCs effectively alleviated inflammatory demyelinating lesions in EAN by promoting Th17/Treg (T helper 17 and regulatory T cells) rebalance. CONCLUSION: The adoptive transfer of VX-509-tolDCs alleviated inflammatory demyelinating lesions in a mouse model of GBS, known as the EAN mouse, by partially restoring the balance between Treg and Th17 cells.

ABSTRACT

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) represents the most common tumor in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. N-Myc downstream-regulated gene 2 (NDRG2) is a tumor suppressor highly expressed in healthy tissues but downregulated in many cancers. Although cell proliferation-related metabolism rewiring has been well characterized, less is known about the mechanism of metabolic changes with DLBCL. Herein, we investigated the expressions of NDRG2, MYC and Myc-interacting zinc finger protein 1 (MIZ-1) in seven human lymphoma (mostly DLBCLs) cell lines. NDRG2 expression was inversely correlated with the expressions of MYC and MIZ-1. Further, we explored the regulatory mechanism and biological functions underlying the lymphomagenesis involving NDRG2, MYC and MIZ-1. MYC and MIZ-1 promoted DLBCL cell proliferation, while NDRG2 induced apoptosis in LY8 cells. Moreover, NDRG2 methylation was reversed by the 5-Aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-Aza-CDR) treatment, triggering the downregulation of MYC and inhibiting DLBCL cell survival. MYC interacts with NDRG2 to regulate energy metabolism associated with mTOR. Remarkably, supporting the biological significance, the converse correlation between NDRG2 and MYC was observed in human DLBCL tumor tissues (R = -0.557). Bioinformatics analysis further validated the association among NDRG2, MYC, MIZ-1, mTOR, and related metabolism genes. Additionally, NDRG2 (P = 0.001) and MYC (P < 0.001) were identified as promising prognostic biomarkers in DLBCL patients through survival analysis. Together, our data demonstrate that the MYC/MIZ-1 complex interplays with NDRG2 to influence the proliferation and apoptosis of DLBCL cells and show the characterizations of NDRG2, MYC and MIZ-1 for metabolism features and prediction prognosis in DLBCL.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the presence of Chlamydia psittaci in poultry and the environment in live poultry wholesale markets in Changsha during 2021-2022 and conducted a phylogenetic analysis to understand its distribution in this market. METHODS: In total, 483 samples were analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction and 17 C. psittaci-positive samples using high-throughput sequencing, BLAST similarity, and phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-two out of 483 poultry and environmental samples were positive for C. psittaci (overall positivity rate: 4.55%) with no difference in positivity rates over 12 months. Chlamydia psittaci was detected at 11 sampling points (overall positivity rate: 27.5%), including chicken, duck, and pigeon/chicken/duck/goose shops, with pigeon shops having the highest positivity rate (46.67%). The highest positivity rates were found in sewage (12.5%), poultry fecal (7.43%), cage swab (6.59%), avian pharyngeal/cloacal swab (3.33%), and air (2.29%) samples. The ompA sequences were identified in two strains of C. psittaci, which were determined to bear genotype B using phylogenetic analysis. Thus, during monitoring, C. psittaci genotype B was detected in the poultry and environmental samples from the poultry wholesale market in Changsha. CONCLUSIONS: To address the potential zoonotic threat, C. psittaci monitoring programs in live poultry markets should be enhanced.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The recommended dosage of pegylated recombinant human granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (PEG-rhG-CSF) for Western chemotherapy patients is 6 mg per cycle. However, for Eastern Asians, the optimal dose remains unknown. METHODS: This open-label, randomized, non-inferiority trial (NCT05283616) enrolled Chinese female breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. Participants were randomized to receive either 3 or 6 mg of PEG-rhG-CSF per cycle, stratified by body weight (BW; ≤60 kg vs. >60 kg). The primary endpoint was timely absolute neutrophil count (ANC) recovery before the second cycle of chemotherapy. RESULTS: A total of 122 patients were randomized and 116 were included for efficacy analyses. The timely ANC recovery rate in the 3 mg arm was 89.8%, compared to 93.0% in the 6 mg arm (one-sided 95% confidence interval [CI] lower limit for difference: -11.7%), meeting the prespecified non-inferiority margin of 15%. The rate was 93.3% with PEG-rhG-CSF 3 mg and 96.6% with 6 mg in patients with BW ≤ 60 kg, and 86.2% and 89.3%, respectively, in those with BW > 60 kg. Although the incidence of severe neutropenia was similar across arms, the occurrence of excessively high ANC and white blood cell counts was higher in the 6 mg arm. No grade ≥3 adverse events related to PEG-rhG-CSF occurred. CONCLUSION: Three milligrams of PEG-rhG-CSF per cycle provided non-inferior neutrophil protection and attenuated neutrophil overshoot compared to 6 mg doses. This low-dose regimen could be a new supportive care option for Chinese breast cancer patients receiving anthracycline-based adjuvant chemotherapy.

Adverse cardiac mechanical remodeling is critical for the progression of heart failure following myocardial infarction (MI). We previously demonstrated the involvement of RIP3-mediated necroptosis in the loss of functional cardiomyocytes and cardiac dysfunction post-MI. Herein, we investigated the role of RIP3 in NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3)-mediated inflammation and evaluated the effects of RIP3 knockdown on myocardial mechanics and functional changes after MI. Our findings revealed that mice with MI for 4 weeks exhibited impaired left ventricular (LV) myocardial mechanics, as evidenced by a significant decrease in strain and strain rate in each segment of the LV wall during both systole and diastole. However, RIP3 knockdown ameliorated cardiac dysfunction by improving LV myocardial mechanics not only in the anterior wall but also in other remote nonischemic segments of the LV wall. Mechanistically, knockdown of RIP3 effectively inhibited the activation of the nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB)/NLRP3 pathway, reduced the levels of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) in the heart tissues, and mitigated adverse cardiac remodeling following MI. These results suggest that downregulation of RIP3 holds promise for preventing myocardial inflammation and cardiac mechanical remodeling following MI by regulating the NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway.

BACKGROUD: Endoscopic thyroidectomy (ET) and robotic thyroidectomy (RT) yield similar perioperative outcomes. This study investigated how the learning curve (LC) affects perioperative outcomes between ET and RT, identifying factors that influence the LC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two researchers individually searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library for relevant studies published until February 2024. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale assessed study quality. Random effects model was used to compute the odds ratio and weighted mean difference (WMD). Poisson regression comparison of the number of surgeries (NLC) was required for ET and RT to reach the stable stage of the LC. Heterogeneity was measured using Cochran's Q. Publication bias was tested using funnel plots, and sensitivity analysis assessed findings robustness. Subgroup analysis was done by operation type and patient characteristics. RESULTS: This meta-analysis involved 33 studies. The drainage volume of ET was higher than that of RT (WMD=-17.56 [30.22, -4.49]). After reaching the NLC, the operation time of ET and RT was shortened (ET: WMD=28.15[18.04, 38.26]; RT: WMD=38.53[29.20, 47.86]). Other perioperative outcomes also improved to varying degrees. Notably, RT showed more refined central lymph node resection(5.67 vs. 4.71), less intraoperative bleeding (16.56 mL vs. 42.30 mL), and incidence of transient recurrent laryngeal nerve injury(24.59 vs. 26.77). The NLC of RT was smaller than that of ET(Incidence-rate ratios [IRR]=0.64[0.57, 0.72]). CUSUM analysis (ET: IRR=0.84[0.72, 0.99]; RT: IRR=0.55[0.44, 0.69]) or a smaller number of respondents (ET: IRR=0.26[0.15, 0.46]; RT: IRR=0.51[0.41, 0.63]) was associated with smaller NLC. In RT, transoral approach (IRR=2.73[1.96, 4.50]; IRR=2.48[1.61, 3.84]) and retroauricular approach (RAA) (IRR=2.13[1.26, 3.60]; IRR=1.78[1.04, 3.05]) had smaller NLC compared to bilateral axillo-breast and transaxillary approach (TAA). In ET, the NLC of RAA was smaller than that of TAA (IRR=1.61[1.04, 2.51]), breast approach(IRR=1.67[1.06, 2.64]), and subclavian approach(IRR=1.80[1.03, 3.14]). CONCLUSIONS: Rich surgical experience can improve surgical results of ET and RT. After reaching the NLC, the perioperative outcomes of RT are better than those of ET. Study subjects, surgical approaches, and analysis methods can affect NLC.

BACKGROUND: Peach brown rot, caused by the pathogen Monilinia fructicola, represents a significant postharvest infectious disease affecting peach fruit. This disease is responsible for a substantial increase in fruit decay rates, leading to significant economic losses, often exceeding 50%. Currently, there is a growing interest in identifying biocontrol agents to mitigate peach brown rot, with a predominant interest in Bacillus species. RESULTS: In this investigation, we isolated 410 isolates of actinomycetes from non-farmland ecosystem soil samples. Subsequently, 27 isolates exhibiting superior inhibitory capabilities were selected. Among these, strain XDS1-5 demonstrated the most robust fungistatic effect against brown rot disease, achieving an 80% inhibition rate in vitro and a 66% inhibition rate in vivo. XDS1-5 was identified as belonging to the Streptomyces virginiae species. Furthermore, a fermentation filtrate of XDS1-5 exhibited the ability to metabolize 34.21% of the tested carbon sources and 7.37% of the tested nitrogen sources. Particularly noteworthy was its capacity to disrupt the cell membrane structure directly, leading to increased cell membrane permeability and cytoplasmic leakage. Additionally, our investigation indicated that indoline, a metabolite produced by XDS1-5, played a pivotal role in inhibiting the growth of M. fructicola. CONCLUSION: In summary, our study has identified a biocontrol actinomycete, XDS1-5, with the potential to effectively inhibit postharvest brown rot disease in peaches. This finding holds great significance for the biological control of peach brown rot, offering promising prospects for mitigating the economic losses associated with this devastating disease. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

Background: Ischaemic stroke can lead to many complications, but treatment options are limited. Icariin is a traditional Chinese medicine with reported neuroprotective effects against ischaemic cerebral injury; however, the underlying mechanisms by which icariin ameliorates cell apoptosis require further study. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of icariin after ischaemic stroke and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Methods: N2a neuronal cells were used to create an in vitro oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) model. The effects of icariin on OGD cells were assessed using the CCK-8 kit to detect the survival of cells and based on the concentration, apoptosis markers, inflammation markers, and M2 pyruvate kinase isoenzyme (PKM2) expression were detected using western blotting, RT-qPCR, and flow cytometry. To investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms, we used the PKM2 agonist TEPP-46 and detected apoptosis-related proteins. Results: We demonstrated that icariin alleviated OGD-induced apoptosis in vitro. The expression levels of the apoptosis marker proteins caspase-3 and Bax were upregulated and Bcl-2 was downregulated. Furthermore, icariin reduced inflammation and downregulated the expression of PKM2. Moreover, activation of the PKM2 by pretreatment with the PKM2 agonist TEPP-46 enhanced the effects on OGD induced cell apoptosis in vitro. Conclusion: This study elucidated the underlying mechanism of PKM2 in OGD-induced cell apoptosis and highlighted the potential of icariin in the treatment of ischaemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: A large number of psychological consequences including sleep health emerged during the 2019 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Sleep patterns in toddlers are vulnerable to negative environmental exposures, however, very few studies on this topic have been published so far. OBJECTIVES: In this paper, we aimed to investigate the sleep patterns and associated factors in toddlers from China confined at home in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: From April to November 2021, a convenience sample of 493 parents of young children aged (12-35 months) were surveyed from Fuzhou, Sanming, Quanzhou, Nanping, and Longyan cities in the Fujian Province, China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted via Electronic questionnaires to collect parent and child social-demographic characteristics. The Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ) was used to collect data on sleep practices, sleep duration and patterns, as well as the number of nocturnal awaking . RESULTS: The mean age of toddlers was 2.11 years old, and 52.54% (259/493) were males. Among the 493 toddlers' sleep patterns, 331(67.1%) initiated sleep accompanied by parents, 67(13.6%) slept independently, 59 (12.0%) were breast fed/bottle fed to initiate sleep, 27 (5.5%) were held and 9 (1.8%) rocked. The clear longitudinal association between the duration of night-time sleep, the frequency of nighttime awakenings, and various sleep patterns remains clear (p < 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that sleep initiation with bottle-feeding/breast-feeding and rocked significantly increased the frequency of nighttime awakenings and reduced the duration of nighttime sleep (p < 0.05), as held was dramatically only for increasing the number of nighttime awakenings (p < 0.05). Multi-variate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that toddlers with severe sleep difficulties had a higher probability of being rocked to initiate sleep (p < 0.05). Conversely, young children with minor sleep problems were more apt to be in bed alone to initiate sleep (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: During the COVID-19 pandemic, most infants and toddlers initiated sleep accompanied by parents and tend to have electronic media exposure before bedtime. Increased waking at night may be associated with sleep initiation with breast-feeding/bottle-feeding. Therefore, pediatric practitioners in primary community hospitals should pay attention to the education and promotion of sleep hygiene and parenting knowledge of young children to avoid the formation of poor sleep hygiene habits.

ABSTRACT

As a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, the aesthetic value of bronze artifacts from the Shang and Chow Dynasties has had a profound influence on Chinese traditional culture and art. To facilitate the digital preservation and protection of these Shang and Chow bronze artifacts (SCB), it becomes imperative to categorize their decorative patterns. Therefore, a SCB pattern classification method of differential evolution called Shang and Chow Bronze Convolutional Neural Network (SCB-CNN) is proposed. Firstly, the original bronze decorative patterns of Shang and Chow dynasties are collected, and the samples are expanded through image augmentation technology to form a training dataset. Secondly, based on the classical convolutional neural network structure, the recognition and classification of bronze patterns are implemented by adjusting the network parameters. Then, the initial parameters of the convolutional neural network are optimized by differential evolution algorithm, and the optimized SCB-CNN is simulated. Finally, comparative experiments were conducted between the optimized SCB-CNN, the unoptimized model, VGG-Net, and GoogleNet. The experimental results indicate that the optimized SCB-CNN significantly reduces training time while maintaining fast prediction speed, convergence speed, and high accuracy. This study provides new insights for the inheritance and innovation research of SCB patterns.
