ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Prior research has reported cognitive improvements in elderly individuals when mental and physical exercise are practiced simultaneously, as in exergaming. However, the molecular mechanisms driving this beneficial response remain unclear. Moreover, there is robust evidence that regular exercise increases neurotrophic factors and promotes neuroplasticity, contributing to cognitive improvement. This research aimed to assess the impact of a 6-week Xbox 360 Kinect exergame protocol on cognitive function and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in institutionalized older individuals. METHODS: Participants living in a long-term care facility were included. The intervention (Xbox 360 Kinect exergame protocol) was conducted individually and consisted of two sessions per week (40 min each) over 6 weeks. Participants' cognitive function (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, MoCA) was evaluated before and after the intervention. Blood samples (15 ml) were collected at the same time to measure BDNF levels. RESULTS: Although there were no changes in total MoCA scores, exergame training improved the "language" domain and demonstrated a tendency toward an improvement in the "abstraction" and "memory/delayed recall" domains. Furthermore, BDNF levels were significantly increased after the intervention. CONCLUSION: BDNF enhancement might mediate, at least in part, the cognitive changes induced by a 6-week Xbox 360 Kinect exergame protocol in institutionalized older adults.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a pathologic condition that causes functional incapacity, with reduction of quality of life and life expectancy and an increase in mortality. Bariatric surgery is indicated to alleviate associated comorbidities and increase physical capacity. The objective of this work was to evaluate the functional capacity of patients with morbid obesity before and after (3 months) bariatric surgery. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving 67 patients, where 61 were women and six men, with a mean age of 38 ± 10 years and mean BMI of 50.45 ± 8.5 kg/m2. All patients were assessed before surgery and 3 months afterwards. The following assessments were performed: 6-min walk test (6MWT), functional independence measure (FIM), and test for risk of falling and transfer capacity, called the timed up-and-go test. RESULTS: The study demonstrated a reduction in parameters evaluated in 6MWT with a statistically significant difference at two times (rest and final) when evaluated before and after bariatric surgery (p < 0.001). In relation to the FIM and timed up-and-go test, the patients showed a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.001) for both when comparing the tasks evaluated at the pre- and postoperative moments. CONCLUSIONS: Obesity has an impact on the functioning and quality of life of patients. We observed an improvement in all instruments used for assessment before and after bariatric surgery, where a linear component was demonstrated in relation to diminution of body mass index and functioning.

Grape juices are an important source of food antioxidants. Unfortunately, there is little data about the mineral composition and the antioxidant, mutagenic and antimutagenic activities of grape juice in eukaryote cells. We evaluated the mineral contents (Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Si, S, Cl) of grape juices, the antioxidant, mutagenic and/or antimutagenic activities of the juices in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and looked for a possible association between mineral content and antioxidant, mutagenic and/or antimutagenic activities of juice samples. Eight commercial grape juices, four purple (Bordo variety) and four white (Niagara variety), were evaluated. Most of the minerals were in similar concentrations in purple and white grape juices, except for calcium and copper; purple grapes had more calcium content and white grapes had more copper content. All grape juices had important antioxidant and antimutagenic activities in S. cerevisiae and prevented the oxidative damage provoked by hydrogen peroxide (P < 0.05). Positive correlations (P < 0.05) were observed between antioxidant and antimutagenic activities and mineral content. In this context, we concluded that the grape juices, white and purple, are an important mineral source, and these contents explain, in part, the important antioxidant and antimutagenic activities.

ABSTRACT

In some countries, leaves of Vitis vinifera grapes have been used for food and for treating many medical disorders. However, there are no studies on the leaves of Vitis labrusca, the main species used for wine and juice production in South America. In this work, the phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of organic and conventional grape leaves extracts prepared from V. labrusca (var. Bordo) in brain tissues (in vitro model) have been evaluated. Both organic and conventional grape leaves extracts have similar total phenolic content, however, different patterns were observed for the main phenolic compounds of both kinds of leaves. The organic leaves extract showed about 10 times more resveratrol than the conventional one. Both extracts were able to reduce the lipid and protein damages induced by hydrogen peroxide in the brain of rats. This effect was accompanied by the reversion of the hydrogen peroxide-induced alterations in the superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. Negative correlations between lipid and protein damages and the levels of polyphenols were found, suggesting that these compounds contribute directly to the protective effect observed.

ABSTRACT

Although the beneficial effects of moderate wine intake are well-known, data on antioxidant capacity of grape juices are scarce and controversial. The purpose of this study was to quantify total polyphenols, anthocyanins, resveratrol, catechin, epicatechin, procyanidins, and ascorbic acid contents in grape juices, and to assess their possible antioxidant activity. Eight Vitis labrusca juices--white or purple, from organically- or conventionally-grown grapes, and obtained in pilot or commercial scale--were used. Organic grape juices showed statistically different (p<0.05) higher values of total polyphenols and resveratrol as compared conventional grape juices. Purple juices presented higher total polyphenol content and in vitro antioxidant activity as compared to white juices, and this activity was positively correlated (r=0.680; p<0.01) with total polyphenol content. These results indicate that white and purple grape juices can be used as antioxidants and nutritional sources.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the effects of conventional phototherapy and fiberoptic phototherapy on trans-epidermal water loss in preterm infants with and without skin ointment application, 20 infants were randomly assigned to receive conventional or fiberoptic phototherapy for non-hemolytic hyperbilirubinemia. After conventional phototherapy, there were no significant differences in trans-epidermal water loss between ointment-treated and untreated areas. After fiberoptic phototherapy, trans-epidermal water loss significantly increased from ointment-treated and untreated areas, but the increase was less in treated areas.
