ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The benefit of postoperative adjuvant transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (pTACE) for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), especially those with Child-Pugh (CP) B, remains controversial. This study aimed to assess the survival benefit of pTACE for HCC patients with CP B. METHODS: Data from 297 HCC patients with CP B7 or B8 were analyzed, dividing them into groups with and without pTACE (70, 23.6% vs. 227, 76.4%). Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to control for confounding bias, and competing-risk regression was applied to address bias from non-cancer-specific death (NCSD). RESULTS: Preliminary findings suggest that pTACE did not increase the incidence of severe complications in HCC patients with CP B7 or B8. Survival analysis indicated that the group receiving pTACE had better overall survival and recurrence-free survival than the group without pTACE after PSM. Furthermore, competitive risk analysis revealed that pTACE was an independent prognostic factor associated with reduced cancer-specific death incidence (subdistribution hazard ratio [SHR] 0.644, 95%CI: 0.378-0.784, P = 0.011) and recurrence (SHR 0.635, 95% CI: 0.379-0.855, P = 0.001). Importantly, pTACE did not increase NCSD. Subgroup analysis corroborated these results. CONCLUSION: Adjuvant TACE demonstrates the potential to significantly enhance the long-term prognosis of HCC patients with CP B7 or B8 following hepatectomy, particularly those with multiple tumors, large tumor size, macrovascular or microvascular invasion, and narrow resection margin. Hence, pTACE should be considered for patients at high risk of recurrence following thorough evaluation.

ABSTRACT

A series of polymers with both high refractive index and high Abbe number have been successfully synthesized through the photoclick thiol-ene reaction between the monomers derived from biobased magnolol (or honokiol) and commercial mercaptans and thiophenols. The polymer films not only exhibit a high refractive index and a high Abbe number but also display a transmittance of up to 90% in a range of wavelengths from 550 to 2000 nm and nearly 0% in the UV region. Moreover, these polymers also display low haze values in the visible-light region as well as exhibit good thermostability. These data indicate that they have potential applications for the fabrication of optical lenses and anti-UV coatings. In particular, this series of polymers are readily used for industrialization due to its excellent optical properties but low expense, simplicity, and efficiency of synthesis.

ABSTRACT

Cyclostratigraphy is an important observational window into the history of the Earth-Moon system. However, there is limited information from the Mesoproterozoic era (1.0 to 1.6 billion years ago); accordingly, only weak constraints on Earth-Moon separation and tidal dissipation are available for this time. To close this knowledge gap, we analyze cyclostratigraphy from the Yemahe Formation (~1.2 billion years ago), Wumishan Formation (~1.5 billion years ago), and Chuanlinggou Formation (~1.6 billion years ago) in China. We use a Bayesian inversion method to analyze the three cyclostratigraphic sections. We combine previous results with these three estimates to construct an updated Earth-Moon system evolution and tidal dissipation history after 2.5 billion years ago. The results show a tidal dissipation peak that is consistent with the model predictions within the error range but also that there may be an additional resonance fluctuation in the Mesoproterozoic era.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to comprehensively understand the water environment quality status and its change trend in the Inner Mongolia section of the Yellow River Basin. To analyze the water quality in recent years,the water quality data in the Yellow River basin from 2003 to 2020 were firstly collected from five typical monitoring stations.Various data analysis methods, including principal component analysis, cluster analysis, and a long short-term memory model, were used along with an improved comprehensive water quality identification index to explore the spatiotemporal characteristics of water quality in the Yellow River Basin. The results showed that the overall water quality in the basin has improved and stabilized over time. In terms of temporal variation, there was a distinction between the wet season and dry season, with a better status observed during the wet season due to increased agricultural irrigation and higher water volume. Spatially, the five monitoring sections could be divided into three categories based on strong natural factors that maintained their temporal characteristics during the wet season; however, significant differences were observed during the dry season due to urban water usage patterns. Analysis using LSTM models revealed that ammonia nitrogen will continue to decline and have a decreasing impact on the comprehensive water quality. These findings provide valuable insights for the comprehensive management of water quality in Inner Mongolia's Yellow River Basin.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Antioxidants diet is beneficial for the prognosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the relationship between the Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score (DAQS), a measure of overall quality on antioxidant diet, and hyperuricemia related mortality is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the DAQS and hyperuricemia mortality in CKD patients. Methods: In this cohort study, data were collected in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2009 to 2018. The DAQS was calculated based on the six dietary antioxidants. Mortality status were determined by NHANES-linked National Death Index public access files through December 31, 2019. Weighted Cox proportional hazard models were used to investigate the association between the DAQS and hyperuricemia related mortality. Results: A total of 3,684 participants were included. During the median follow-up of 63.83 months, 820 deaths were recorded. The results showed that higher dietary antioxidants intake associated with lower hyperuricemia related mortality risk among CKD patients (HR = 1.28, 95%CI: 1.07 to 1.54). In subgroup analyses, the association of antioxidants intake and hyperuricemia related mortality risk remained exist in groups of aged ≥65 years (HR = 1.23, 95%CI: 1.01 to 1.52), with hypertension (HR = 1.26, 95%CI: 1.02 to 1.55), with dyslipidemia (HR = 1.30, 95%CI: 1.07 to 1.58), with CVD (HR = 1.31, 95%CI: 1.03 to 1.67), and diabetes (HR = 1.62, 95%CI: 1.24 to 2.12). Conclusion: Higher antioxidants intake associated with lower odds of hyperuricemia related mortality in CKD patients. Future interventional studies are needed to elucidate the beneficial effect of antioxidants diets.

ABSTRACT

The fragmentation of the functional brain network has been identified through the functional connectivity (FC) analysis in studies investigating anesthesia-induced loss of consciousness (LOC). However, it remains unclear whether mild sedation of anesthesia can cause similar effects. This paper aims to explore the changes in local-global brain network topology during mild anesthesia, to better understand the macroscopic neural mechanism underlying anesthesia sedation. We analyzed high-density EEG from 20 participants undergoing mild and moderate sedation of propofol anesthesia. By employing a local-global brain parcellation in EEG source analysis, we established binary functional brain networks for each participant. Furthermore, we investigated the global-scale properties of brain networks by estimating global efficiency and modularity, and examined the changes in meso-scale properties of brain networks by quantifying the distribution of high-degree and high-betweenness hubs and their corresponding rich-club coefficients. It is evident from the results that the mild sedation of anesthesia does not cause a significant change in the global-scale properties of brain networks. However, network components centered on SomMot L show a significant decrease, while those centered on Default L, Vis L and Limbic L exhibit a significant increase during the transition from wakefulness to mild sedation (p<0.05). Compared to the baseline state, mild sedation almost doubled the number of high-degree hubs in Vis L, DorsAttn L, Limbic L, Cont L, and reduced by half the number of high-degree hubs in SomMot R, DorsAttn R, SalVentAttn R. Further, mild sedation almost doubled the number of high-betweenness hubs in Vis L, Vis R, Limbic R, Cont R, and reduced by half the number of high-betweenness hubs in SomMot L, SalVentAttn L, Default L, and SomMot R. Our results indicate that mild anesthesia cannot affect the global integration and segregation of brain networks, but influence meso-scale function for integrating different resting-state systems involved in various segregation processes. Our findings suggest that the meso-scale brain network reorganization, situated between global integration and local segregation, could reflect the autonomic compensation of the brain for drug effects. As a direct response and adjustment of the brain network system to drug administration, this spontaneous reorganization of the brain network aims at maintaining consciousness in the case of sedation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to compare the clinical and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) between the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol and conventional care in patients undergoing esophagectomy for cancer, which have not previously been compared. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included prospective PRO data from August 2019 to June 2021. Clinical outcomes included perioperative complications and postoperative length of stay (PLOS). Patient-reported outcomes were assessed by using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30 (QLQ-C30) and esophagus-specific module (QLQ-OES18) preoperatively to 6 months postoperatively. Mixed-effects models were used to longitudinally compare quality of life (QOL) scores between the two modes. RESULTS: Patients undergoing conventional care and ERAS were analyzed (n = 348 and 109, respectively). The ERAS group had fewer overall complications, pneumonia, arrhythmia, and a shorter PLOS than the conventional group, and outperformed the conventional group in five functional QLQ-C30 domains and five symptom QLQ-OES18 domains, including less dysphagia (p < 0.0001), trouble talking (p = 0.0006), and better eating (p < 0.0001). These advantages persisted for 3 months postoperatively. For the cervical circular stapled anastomosis, the initial domains and duration of benefit were reduced in the ERAS group. CONCLUSIONS: The ERAS protocol has significant advantages over conventional care in terms of clinical outcomes, lowering postoperative symptom burden, and improving functional QOL in patients who have undergone esophagectomy. Selection of the optimal technique for cervical anastomosis is a key operative component of ERAS that maintains the symptom domains and duration of the advantages of PROs.

ABSTRACT

The speckle noise generated during digital holographic interferometry (DHI) is unavoidable and difficult to eliminate, thus reducing its accuracy. We propose a self-supervised deep-learning speckle denoising method using a cycle-consistent generative adversarial network to mitigate the effect of speckle noise. The proposed method integrates a 4-f optical speckle noise simulation module with a parameter generator. In addition, it uses an unpaired dataset for training to overcome the difficulty in obtaining noise-free images and paired data from experiments. The proposed method was tested on both simulated and experimental data, with results showing a 6.9% performance improvement compared with a conventional method and a 2.6% performance improvement compared with unsupervised deep learning in terms of the peak signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, the proposed method exhibits superior denoising performance and potential for DHI, being particularly suitable for processing large datasets.

ABSTRACT

The emergence of drug-resistant bacteria poses a significant threat to people's lives and health as bacterial infections continue to persist. Currently, antibiotic therapy remains the primary approach for tackling bacterial infections. However, the escalating rates of drug resistance coupled with the lag in the development of novel drugs have led to diminishing effectiveness of conventional treatments. Therefore, the development of nonantibiotic-dependent therapeutic strategies has become imperative to impede the rise of bacterial resistance. The emergence of chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has opened up a new possibility due to the CDT can convert H2O2 into •OH via Fenton/Fenton-like reaction for drug-resistant bacterial treatment. However, the efficacy of CDT is limited by a variety of practical factors. To overcome this limitation, the sterilization efficiency of CDT can be enhanced by introducing the therapeutics with inherent antimicrobial capability. In addition, researchers have explored CDT-based combined therapies to augment its antimicrobial effects and mitigate its potential toxic side effects toward normal tissues. This review examines the research progress of CDT in the antimicrobial field, explores various strategies to enhance CDT efficacy and presents the synergistic effects of CDT in combination with other modalities. And last, the current challenges faced by CDT and the future research directions are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Background: Error-related potentials (ErrPs) are electrophysiological responses that naturally occur when humans perceive wrongdoing or encounter unexpected events. It offers a distinctive means of comprehending the error-processing mechanisms within the brain. A method for detecting ErrPs with high accuracy holds significant importance for various ErrPs-based applications, such as human-in-the-loop Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems. Nevertheless, current methods fail to fulfill the generalization requirements for detecting such ErrPs due to the high non-stationarity of EEG signals across different tasks and the limited availability of ErrPs datasets. Methods: This study introduces a deep learning-based model that integrates convolutional layers and transformer encoders for the classification of ErrPs. Subsequently, a model training strategy, grounded in transfer learning, is proposed for the effective training of the model. The datasets utilized in this study are available for download from the publicly accessible databases. Results: In cross-task classification, an average accuracy of about 78% was achieved, exceeding the baseline. Furthermore, in the leave-one-subject-out, within-session, and cross-session classification scenarios, the proposed model outperformed the existing techniques with an average accuracy of 71.81, 78.74, and 77.01%, respectively. Conclusions: Our approach contributes to mitigating the challenge posed by limited datasets in the ErrPs field, achieving this by reducing the requirement for extensive training data for specific target tasks. This may serve as inspiration for future studies that concentrate on ErrPs and their applications.

ABSTRACT

Bladder cancer is a common malignancy with a poor prognosis worldwide. Positive cofactor 4 (PC4) is widely reported to promote malignant phenotypes in various tumors. Nonetheless, the biological function and mechanism of PC4 in bladder cancer remain unclear. Here, for the first time, we report that PC4 is elevated in bladder cancer and is associated with patient survival. Moreover, PC4 deficiency obviously inhibited bladder cancer cell proliferation and metastasis by reducing the expression of genes related to cancer stemness (CD44, CD47, KLF4 and c-Myc). Through RNA-seq and experimental verification, we found that activation of the Wnt5a/ß-catenin pathway is involved in the malignant function of PC4. Mechanistically, PC4 directly interacts with Sp1 to promote Wnt5a transcription. Thus, our study furthers our understanding of the role of PC4 in cancer stemness regulation and provides a promising strategy for bladder cancer therapy.

ABSTRACT

Differentiation of Leydig cells plays a key role in male reproductive function. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have emerged as a potential cell source for generating Leydig-like cells due to their multipotent differentiation capacity and accessibility. This study aimed to investigate the morphological and genetic expression changes of BMSCs during differentiation into Leydig-like cells. Testicular extract liquid, which simulates the microenvironment in vivo, induced the third passage BMSCs differentiated into Leydig-like cells. Changes in cell morphology were observed by microscopy, the formation of lipid droplets of androgen precursor was identified by Oil Red Staining, and the expression of testicular specific genes 3ß-HSD and SF-1 in testicular stromal cells was detected by RT-qPCR. BMSCs isolated from the bone marrow of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were cultured for 3 generations and identified as qualified BMSCs in terms of morphology and cell surface markers. After 14 days of induction with testicular tissue lysate, lipid droplets appeared in the cytoplasm of P3 BMSCs by Oil Red O staining. RT-qPCR detection was performed on BMSCs on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, and 21st day after induction. Relative expression levels of 3ß-HSD mRNA significantly increased after 14 days of induction, while the relative expression of SF-1 mRNA increased after 14 days of induction but was not significant. BMSCs can differentiate into testicular interstitial cells with reserve androgen precursor lipid droplets after induction by testicular tissue lysate. The differentiation ability of BMSCs provides the potential to reconstruct the testicular microenvironment and is expected to fundamentally improve testicular function and provide new treatment options for abnormal spermatogenesis diseases.

ABSTRACT

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as promising electrocatalysts have been widely studied, but their performance is limited by conductivity and coordinating saturation. This study proposes a cationic (V) modification strategy and evaluates its effect on the electrocatalytic performance of CoFe-MOF nanosheet arrays. The optimal V-CoFe-MOF/NF electrocatalyst exhibits excellent oxygen-evolution reaction (OER)/hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) performance (231 mV at 100 mA cm-2/86 mV at 10 mA cm-2) in alkaline conditions, with its OER durability exceeding 400 h without evident degradation. Furthermore, as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting, a small cell voltage is achieved (1.60 V at 10 mA cm-2). The practicability of the catalyst is further evaluated by membrane electrode assembly (MEA), showing outstanding activity (1.53 V at 10 mA cm-2) and long-term stability (at 300 mA cm-2). Moreover, our results reveal the apparent reconstruction properties of V-CoFe-MOF/NF in alkaline electrolytes, where the partially dissolved V promotes the formation of more active ß-MOOH. The mechanism study shows the OER mechanism shifts to a lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) after V doping, which directly avoids complex multistep adsorption mechanism and reduces reaction energy. This study provides a cation mediated strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts.

The purpose of our study is to examine the correlation between sleep factors and the prevalence of kidney stones in US adults. A total of 34,679 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007 to 2018 were included in the analyses. Sleep data collection included: presleep factors (difficulty falling asleep, sleep onset latency), intra-sleep factors (risk index of obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, difficulty maintaining sleep), post-sleep factors (daytime sleepiness, non-restorative sleep), sleep schedule and duration, and sleep quality. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the correlation between sleep factors and the prevalence of kidney stones. Among the 34,679 participants, the overall incidence of kidney stones was 9.3%. The presence of presleep factors (difficulty falling asleep [odds ratios [OR], 1.680; 95% CI, 1.310-2.150], prolonged sleep onset latency [OR, 1.320; 95% CI, 1.020-1.700]), intra-sleep factors (higher risk index of obstructive sleep apnea [OR, 1.750; 95% CI, 1.500-2.050], restless leg syndrome [OR, 1.520; 95% CI, 1.150-1.990], difficulty maintaining sleep [OR, 1.430; 95% CI, 1.130-1.810]), post-sleep factors (daytime sleepiness [OR, 1.430; 95% CI, 1.220-1.680], non-restorative sleep [OR, 1.400; 95% CI, 1.110-1.760]), short sleep duration (OR, 1.190; 95% CI, 1.080-1.310), mediate sleep quality (OR, 1.140; 95% CI, 1.020-1.290), and poor sleep quality (OR, 1.500; 95% CI, 1.310-1.720) are linked to the occurrence of kidney stones. However, short sleep onset latency, bedtime and wake-up time were not significantly associated with the prevalence of kidney stones. These findings showed positive associations between higher kidney stone prevalence and poor sleep factors.

The mutualistic network of plant-pollinator also involves interspecific pollination caused by pollinator sharing. Plant-pollinator networks are commonly based on flower visit observations, which may not adequately represent the actual pollen transfer between co-flowering plant species. Here, we compared the network structure of plant-pollinator interactions based on flower visits (FV) and pollen loads (PL) on the bodies of pollinators and tested how the degree of pollinator sharing in the two networks affected heterospecific pollen transfer (HPT) between plant species in a subalpine meadow. The FV and PL networks were largely overlapped. PL network included more links than FV network. The positions of plant and pollinator species in the FV and PL networks were positively correlated, indicating that both networks could detect major plant-pollinator interactions. The degree of pollinator sharing, based on either the FV or the PL network, positively influenced the amount of heterospecific pollen transferred between plant species pairs. However, the degree of pollinator sharing had a low overall explanatory power for HPT, and the explanatory powers of the FV and PL networks were similar. Overall, our study highlights the importance of FV and PL for understanding the drivers and outcomes of plant-pollinator interactions, as well as their relevance to HPT.

ABSTRACT

This study reported for the first time that Ascorbic acid (AA) could appreciably boost the efficiency of Octyl gallate (OG)-mediated photodynamic inactivation (PDI) on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in planktonic and biofilm states. The combination of OG (0.075 mM) and AA (200 mM) with 420 nm blue light (212 mW/cm2) led to a >6 Log killing within only 5 min for E. coli and S. aureus and rapid eradication of biofilms. The mechanism of action appears to be the generation of highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) via photochemical pathways. OG was exposed to BL irradiation to generate various reactive oxygen radicals (ROS) and the addition of AA could transform singlet oxygen (1O2) into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which could further react with AA to generate enormous •OH. These ROS jeopardized bacteria and biofilms by nonspecifically attacking various biomacromolecules. Overall, this PDI strategy provides a powerful microbiological decontamination modality to guarantee safe food products.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Surgery for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is characterized by a poor prognosis and high complication rate, resulting in a heavy symptom burden and poor health-related quality of life (QOL). We evaluated longitudinal patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to analyze the correlations between symptoms and QOL and their changing characteristics during postoperative rehabilitation. METHODS: We investigated patients with ESCC who underwent minimally invasive McKeown esophagectomy at Sichuan Cancer Hospital between April 2019 and December 2019. Longitudinal data of the clinical characteristics and PROs were collected. The MD Anderson Symptom Inventory and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QOL questionnaires were used to assess symptoms and QOL and compare the trajectories of PROs during the investigation. RESULTS: A total of 244 patients with ESCC were enrolled in this study. Regarding QOL, role and emotional functions returned to baseline at 1 month after surgery, and cognitive and social functions returned to baseline at 3 months after surgery. However, physical function and global QOL did not return to baseline at 1 year after surgery. At 7 days and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery, the main symptoms of the patients were negatively correlated with physical, role, emotional, cognitive, and social functions and the overall health status (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients with ESCC experience reduced health-related QOL and persisting symptoms after minimally invasive McKeown esophagectomy, but a recovery trend was observed within 1 month. The long-term QOL after esophagectomy is acceptable.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infections poses a significant threat to human health, necessitating urgent development of new antimicrobial agents. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which are among the most widely used engineered nanomaterials, have been extensively studied. However, the impact of AgNPs on CRKP and the potential for drug resistance development remain inadequately explored. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, broth dilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using the broth dilution method. Results indicated MIC values of 93.1 ± 193.3 µg ml-1 for AgNPs, 2.3 ± 5.1 µg ml-1 for AgNO3, and 25.1 ± 48.3 µg ml-1 for imipenem (IMI). The combined inhibitory effect of AgNPs and IMI on CRKP was assessed using the checkerboard method. Moreover, after 6-20 generations of continuous culture, the MIC value of AgNPs increased 2-fold. Compared to IMI, resistance of Kl. pneumoniae to AgNPs developed more slowly, with a higher fold increase in MIC observed after 20 generations. Whole-genome sequencing revealed four nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphism mutations in CRKP after 20 generations of AgNP treatment. CONCLUSION: We have demonstrated that AgNPs significantly inhibit CRKP isolates and enhance the antibacterial activity of imipenem against Kl. pneumoniae. Although the development of AgNP resistance is gradual, continued efforts are necessary for monitoring and studying the mechanisms of AgNP resistance.
