ABSTRACT

We present time reversal experiments demonstrating refocusing of gravity-capillary waves in a water tank cavity. Owing to the reverberating effect of the cavity, only a few channels are sufficient to reconstruct the surface wave at the point source, even if the absorption is not negligible. Space-time-resolved measurements of the waves during the refocusing allow us to quantitatively demonstrate that the quality of the refocusing increases linearly with the number of reemitting channels. Numerical simulations corresponding to water waves at larger scales, with negligible damping, indicate the possibility of very high quality refocusing.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: We present a case of a myospherulosis, describe the underlying cause and discuss ways of preventing its development. CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old man presented myospherulosis of the maxillary sinus caused by an antibiotic ointment placed in the sinus three years earlier during a Caldwell Luc procedure. The patient underwent a second Calwell Luc procedure. Outcome was uneventful and no recurrence was noted. DISCUSSION: Histological examination should be ordered at reoperation and petroleum-based ointments and packings should be avoided in sinus surgery.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Forestier's disease is characterized by hyperostosis of the anterolateral margin of the vertebral bodies. Cervical spine involvement rarely leads to dysphagia. OBSERVATION: A 76 year-old man suffered from progressive dysphagia, feeling of suffocation and left cervical pain. Clinical examination was unremarkable but cervical spine radiographies revealed large anterior osteophytes creating pharyngeal encroachment. Computed tomography showed a "double vertebral body" aspect notably in C2 and C3, compressing ahead structures. Surgical procedure consisted in resection of the anterior osteophytes. Postoperative course was uneventful and all the symptoms resolved within a few weeks. DISCUSSION: Anterior cervical spine hyperostosis in Forestier's disease can lead to dysphagia by direct pharyngeal or esophageal compression and, later on, by muscular fibrosis of the pharyngoesophageal wall in severe cases. Surgery must take the place of medical treatment in severe dysphagias with a good radioclinical correlation, to improve functional prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Three cases of pituitary adenomas with infra-sellar extension into the nasopharynx and the nasal cavities are reported. The clinical signs were epistaxis, nasal obstruction, painful sinuses and purulent rhinorrhoea. The initial diagnostic hypothesis was that of a carcinoma of the nasopharynx or the sinuses in all three cases. The diagnosis was made by histological examination and measurement of plasma hormone levels. These cases highlight the difficulty in the diagnosis of such tumours due to their misleading clinical, radiological and histological features.

ABSTRACT

This is a retrospective study of 80 patients who have had a horizontal subglottic laryngectomy. The functional results were assessed by means of clinical findings at follow-up and a questionnaire. The mean time to decannulation was 32 days, and to removal of the nasogastric tube 25 days. 45% of patients had no fistula. Of the remaining 55%, there was a false passage for fluids in 90%. These fistulae remained patent for an average of 12 weeks. At one year and beyond, 40% of patients were on a normal diet, 33% were on ground food, 10% on a soft paste diet, 6% on a semi-liquid diet, and 10% were fed by tube. The factors militating towards poor function are age above 65 years, and previous radiotherapy.
