ABSTRACT

Bacterial symbionts, with their shorter generation times and capacity for horizontal gene transfer (HGT), play a critical role in allowing marine organisms to cope with environmental change. The closure of the Isthmus of Panama created distinct environmental conditions in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP) and Caribbean, offering a "natural experiment" for studying how closely related animals evolve and adapt under environmental change. However, the role of bacterial symbionts in this process is often overlooked. We sequenced the genomes of endosymbiotic bacteria in two sets of sister species of chemosymbiotic bivalves from the genera Codakia and Ctena (family Lucinidae) collected on either side of the Isthmus, to investigate how differing environmental conditions have influenced the selection of symbionts and their metabolic capabilities. The lucinid sister species hosted different Candidatus Thiodiazotropha symbionts and only those from the Caribbean had the genetic potential for nitrogen fixation, while those from the TEP did not. Interestingly, this nitrogen-fixing ability did not correspond to symbiont phylogeny, suggesting convergent evolution of nitrogen fixation potential under nutrient-poor conditions. Reconstructing the evolutionary history of the nifHDKT operon by including other lucinid symbiont genomes from around the world further revealed that the last common ancestor (LCA) of Ca. Thiodiazotropha lacked nif genes, and populations in oligotrophic habitats later re-acquired the nif operon through HGT from the Sedimenticola symbiont lineage. Our study suggests that HGT of the nif operon has facilitated niche diversification of the globally distributed Ca. Thiodiazotropha endolucinida species clade. It highlights the importance of nitrogen availability in driving the ecological diversification of chemosynthetic symbiont species and the role that bacterial symbionts may play in the adaptation of marine organisms to changing environmental conditions.

ABSTRACT

Background: Fungal diseases can cause significant losses in the tomato crop. Phytophthora infestans causes the late blight disease, which considerably affects tomato production worldwide. Weed-based plant extracts are a promising ecological alternative for disease control. Methods: In this study, we analyzed the plant extract of Argemone mexicana L. using chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis (GC-MS). We evaluated its impact on the severity of P. infestans, as well as its effect on the components of the antioxidant defense system in tomato plants. Results: The extract from A. mexicana contains twelve compounds most have antifungal and biostimulant properties. The findings of the study indicate that applying the A. mexicana extract can reduce the severity of P. infestans, increase tomato fruit yield, enhance the levels of photosynthetic pigments, ascorbic acid, phenols, and flavonoids, as well as decrease the biosynthesis of H2O2, malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide anion in the leaves of plants infected with this pathogen. These results suggest that using the extract from A. mexicana could be a viable solution to control the disease caused by P. infestans in tomato crop.

ABSTRACT

The tomato crop is susceptible to various types of stress, both biotic and abiotic, which affect the morphology, physiology, biochemistry, and genetic regulation of plants. Among the biotic factors, is the phytopathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol), which can cause losses of up to 100%. Graphene-Cu nanocomposites have emerged as a potential alternative for pathogen control, thanks to their antimicrobial activity and their ability to induce the activation of the antioxidant defense system in plants. In the present study, the effect of the Graphene-Cu nanocomposites and the functionalization of graphene in the tomato crop inoculated with Fol was evaluated, analyzing their impacts on the antioxidant defense system, the foliar water potential (Ψh), and the efficiency of photosystem II (PSII). The results demonstrated multiple positive effects; in particular, the Graphene-Cu nanocomposite managed to delay the incidence of the "vascular wilt" disease and reduce the severity by 29.0%. This translated into an increase in the content of photosynthetic pigments and an increase in fruit production compared with Fol. In addition, the antioxidant system of the plants was improved, increasing the content of glutathione, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, and the activity of the GPX, PAL, and CAT enzymes. Regarding the impact on the water potential and the efficiency of the PSII, the plants inoculated with Fol and treated with the Graphene-Cu nanocomposite responded better to biotic stress compared with Fol, reducing water potential by up to 31.7% and Fv/Fm levels by 32.0%.

In Mexico, cacao production is endangered by pathogenic fungi, such as Phytophthora spp. and Moniliophthora rorei, that cause black pod rot and moniliasis, respectively. In this study the biocontrol agent Paenibacillus sp. NMA1017 was tested in cacao fields against the previous diseases. The treatments applied were shade management, inoculation of the bacterial strain with or without an adherent, and use of chemical control. The statistical analysis showed that the incidence of black pod rot in tagged cacao trees diminished when the bacterium was applied (reduction of 44.24 to 19.11%). The same result was observed with moniliasis when the pods were tagged (reduction of 66.6 to 27%). The use of Paenibacillus sp. NMA1017 with an integrated management might be a solution to cacao diseases and to having a sustainable production of cacao in Mexico.

OBJECTIVE: The frequency of intracranial bypass procedures has declined. Thus it is difficult for neurosurgeons to develop the necessary skills for this complex procedure. We present a perfusion-based cadaveric model to provide a realistic training experience with high anatomic and physiological fidelity, as well as instantaneous assessment of bypass patency. Validation was assessed by evaluating the educational impact and skill improvement of the participants. METHODS: Fourteen participants attended a hands-on revascularization course with 7 cadaveric models connected to a continuous arterial circulation system pumping a red-colored solution through the entire cranial vasculature, mimicking blood circulation. The ability to perform a vascular anastomosis was evaluated initially. Further, a questionnaire on prior experience was provided. At the end of the 36-hour course, the ability to perform an intracranial bypass was reexamined and the participants completed a self-assessment questionnaire. RESULTS: Initially, only 3 attendees were able to perform an end-to-end anastomosis within the time limit, and only 2 of these anastomoses showed adequate patency. After having accomplished the course, all participants were able to complete a patent end-to-end anastomosis within the time limit, thus demonstrating a significant improvement. Further, both overall educational gain and surgical skills were regarded as remarkable (n = 11 and n = 9). CONCLUSIONS: Simulation-based education is considered an important aspect of medical and surgical development. The presented model is a feasible and accessible alternative to the prior models used for cerebral bypass training. This training may serve as a helpful and widely available tool to improve neurosurgeons' development irrespective of financial resources.

Introducción: La placenta sintetiza y secreta varias hormonas que permiten la regulación del embarazo, el trabajo de parto y la adaptación metabólica materno-fetal. Su comportamiento asociado al tipo de parto puede dar información relevante sobre efectos epigenéticos. Objetivo: Describir el tipo de parto con los niveles de oxitocina, cortisol y hormonas tiroideas en plasma de cordón umbilical al nacer. Método: A 50 mujeres con embarazos principalmente normales se les cuantificaron los niveles neurohormonales en plasma de cordón umbilical, obtenido inmediatamente tras el periodo expulsivo. Los resultados se incorporaron a la base de datos clínicos de cada participante y se analizaron con Stata v.14.0. El protocolo fue aprobado por el comité de ética. Resultados: Hubo 33 partos vaginales (12 espontáneos, 13 acelerados y 8 inducidos) y 17 cesáreas (7 electivas y 10 de urgencia). Se observaron mayores niveles de cortisol en los partos vaginales acelerados; las cesáreas tuvieron menores niveles de cortisol y hormona estimulante de la tiroides. Las intervenciones clínicas, con altos o bajos niveles hormonales, están en directa relación con el tipo de parto. Conclusiones: El cortisol y la hormona estimulante de la tiroides medidos en plasma de cordón umbilical variaron según el tipo de parto. Esto es una primera cuantificación de hormonas en plasma de cordón umbilical y su posible regulación placentaria a propósito del tipo de parto.


Introduction: The placenta synthesizes and secretes several hormones allowing the regulation of pregnancy, labor and maternal-fetal metabolic adaptation. Their behavior associated with the type of delivery, may provide relevant information on epigenetic effects. Objective: To describe the type of delivery with the levels of oxytocin, cortisol and thyroid hormones in umbilical cord plasma at birth. Method: Neurohormonal levels from umbilical cord plasma obtained immediately post expulsion, were quantified in 50 women with mainly normal pregnancies. Results incorporated into the clinical database of each participant, statistically analyzed in Stata v.14.0. Protocol approved by ethics committee. Results: 33 were vaginal deliveries (12 spontaneous, 13 accelerated, 8 induced) and 17 cesarean sections (7 elective and 10 emergency). Higher cortisol levels were observed in accelerated vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections had lower cortisol and thyroid stimulating hormone levels. While clinical interventions, with high or low hormone levels, were related to the type of delivery. Conclusions: Cortisol and thyroid stimulating hormone measured in umbilical cord plasma varied according to the type of delivery. This is a first quantification of hormones in umbilical cord plasma and their possible placental regulation in relation to the type of delivery.

ABSTRACT

Many bacteria have the ability to survive in challenging environments; however, they cannot all grow on standard culture media, a phenomenon known as the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state. Bacteria commonly enter the VBNC state under nutrient-poor environments or under stressful conditions. This review explores the concept of the VBNC state, providing insights into the beneficial bacteria known to employ this strategy. The investigation covers different chemical and physical factors that can induce the latency state, cell features, and gene expression observed in cells in the VBNC state. The review also covers the significance and applications of beneficial bacteria, methods of evaluating bacterial viability, the ability of bacteria to persist in environments associated with higher organisms, and the factors that facilitate the return to the culturable state. Knowledge about beneficial bacteria capable of entering the VBNC state remains limited; however, beneficial bacteria in this state could face adverse environmental conditions and return to a culturable state when the conditions become suitable and continue to exert their beneficial effects. Likewise, this unique feature positions them as potential candidates for healthcare applications, such as the use of probiotic bacteria to enhance human health, applications in industrial microbiology for the production of prebiotics and functional foods, and in the beer and wine industry. Moreover, their use in formulations to increase crop yields and for bacterial bioremediation offers an alternative pathway to harness their beneficial attributes.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) samples were obtained in a static culture of K. xylinus under the effect of a low-intensity magnetic field, UV light, NaCl, and chloramphenicol. The effect of such stimuli on the amount of BC produced and its production rate, specific area, pore volume, and pore diameter were evaluated. The polysaccharide production was enhanced 2.28-fold by exposing K. xylinus culture to UV light (366 nm) and 1.7-fold by adding chloramphenicol (0.25 mM) to the medium in comparison to BC control. All the stimuli triggered a decrease in the rate of BC biosynthesis. BC membranes were found to be mesoporous materials with an average pore diameter from 21.37 to 25.73 nm. BC produced under a magnetic field showed the lowest values of specific area and pore volume (2.55 m2 g-1 and 0.024 cm3 g-1), while the BC synthesized in the presence of NaCl showed the highest (15.72 m2 g-1 and 0.11 cm3 g-1). FTIR spectra of the BC samples also demonstrated changes related to structural order. The rehydration property in these BC samples is not mainly mediated by the crystallinity level or porosity. In summary, these results support that BC production, surface, and structural properties could be modified by manipulating the physical and chemical stimuli investigated.

BACKGROUND: We analyzed the demographic, clinical, and diagnostic data of children and adolescents in Mexico, from the first case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to 28 February 2022. METHODS: Using the open databases of the Ministry of Health and a tertiary pediatric hospital, we obtained demographic and clinical data from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic until 28 February 2022. In addition, quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction outputs were used to determine the viral load, and structural protein-based serology was performed to evaluate IgG antibody levels. RESULTS: Of the total 437,832 children and adolescents with COVID-19, 1187 died. Of these patients, 1349 were admitted to the Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gómez, and 11 died. Obesity, asthma, and immunosuppression were the main comorbidities, and fever, cough, and headache were the main symptoms. In this population, many patients have a low viral load and IgG antibody levels. CONCLUSION: During the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico, children and adolescents had low incidence and mortality. They are a heterogeneous population, but many patients had comorbidities such as obesity, asthma, and immunosuppression; symptoms such as fever, cough, and headache; and low viral load and IgG antibodies.

ABSTRACT

The consumption of food with a high content of bioactive compounds is correlated with the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases. Tomato is a food with exceptional nutraceutical value; however, saline stress severely affects the yield, the quality of fruits, and the agricultural productivity of this crop. Recent studies have shown that seed priming can mitigate or alleviate the negative effects caused by this type of stress. However, the use of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) in this technique has not been tested for this purpose. In the present study, the effects of tomato seed priming with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene (GP) (50, 250, and 500 mg L-1) and two controls (not sonicated and sonicated) were evaluated based on the content of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves; the physicochemical parameters of the fruits; and the presence of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant compounds, carotenoids, and stress biomarkers such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the leaves and fruits of tomato plants without saline stress and with saline stress (50 mM NaCl). The results show that saline stress in combination with CNTs and GP increased the content of chlorophylls (9.1-21.7%), ascorbic acid (19.5%), glutathione (≈13%), proteins (9.9-11.9%), and phenols (14.2%) on the leaves. The addition of CNTs and GP increased the activity of enzymes (CAT, APX, GPX, and PAL). Likewise, there was also a slight increase in the content of H2O2 (by 20.5%) and MDA (3.7%) in the leaves. Salinity affected the quality of tomato fruits. The physico-chemical parameters and bioactive compounds in both the stressed and non-stressed tomato plants were modified with the addition of CNTs and GP. Higher contents of total soluble solids (25.9%), phenols (up to 144.85%), flavonoids (up to 37.63%), ascorbic acid (≈28%), and lycopene (12.4-36.2%) were observed. The addition of carbon nanomaterials by seed priming in tomato plants subjected to saline stress modifies the content of bioactive compounds in tomato fruits and improves the antioxidant defense system, suggesting possible protection of the plant from the negative impacts of stress by salinity. However, analysis of the mechanism of action of CNMs through seed priming, in greater depth is suggested, perhaps with the use of omics sciences.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic was a significant threat to perinatal mental health. This study examined differences in clinically significant depression, anxiety, and co-morbid symptoms among pregnant and postpartum women across several countries and compared prevalence of perinatal depression and anxiety before and during the pandemic in each participating country. METHODS: Participants were 3326 pregnant and 3939 postpartum women (up to six months postpartum) living in Brazil, Chile, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. An online survey was completed between June 7th and October 31st 2020, and included the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Screener (GAD-7). The pre-pandemic studies were identified through literature review. RESULTS: Prevalence of clinically significant depression (EPDS≥13), anxiety (GAD-7 ≥ 10), and co-morbid (EPDS≥13 and GAD-7 ≥ 10) symptoms was 26.7 %, 20 % and 15.2 %, in pregnant women, and 32.7 %, 26.6 % and 20.3 %, in postpartum women, respectively. Significant between-country differences were found in all mental health indicators in both perinatal periods. Higher levels of symptoms were observed during (versus before) the pandemic, especially among postpartum women. LIMITATIONS: Participants were mostly highly educated and cohabiting with a partner. The online nature of the survey may have limited the participation of women from vulnerable socio-economically backgrounds. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings expand previous literature on the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on perinatal mental health, by highlighting that this may be influenced by country of residence. Mental health care policies and interventions should consider the unique needs of perinatal women in different parts of the world.

ABSTRACT

OBJETIVO: Caracterizar por sexo una población universitaria que accedió voluntariamente a una prueba de detección rápida del virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH). MÉTODO: Estudio analítico de 3864 universitarios/as. Variables: sociodemográficas y académicas, comportamiento sexual, prevalencia de infecciones de transmisión sexual (autorreporte) y motivos para realizarse el test rápido. RESULTADOS: El 61,4% son mujeres, edad media 21,64 años, edad de inicio de la actividad sexual 17,01 años. Actividad sexual casual: 36,8%, destacando los hombres (p < 0,001). Sexo anal: 44,5%. Prevalencia de infecciones de transmisión sexual: 7,5%, destacando los hombres en gonorrea (p < 0,001) y sífilis (p = 0,032). Test rápido VIH (+): 0,2%. Consumo de sustancias durante la actividad sexual: 50%. El 41,1% nunca pregunta a su contacto sexual el estado serológico de VIH, destacando los hombres (p < 0,001), y el 64,4% no sabe si ha tenido una pareja sexual VIH (+), destacando los hombres (p < 0,001). El 16,5% siempre ha usado preservativo, destacando las mujeres (p = < 0,001). El 26,21% usa redes sociales para encuentros sexuales, con diferencias por sexo. CONCLUSIONES: Las mujeres demandan más el test rápido de VIH que los hombres. Existen conductas de riesgo y diferencias por sexo: poco uso del preservativo, relaciones sexuales casuales y bajo la influencia de sustancias, prácticas sexuales anales y orales sin protección, desconocer el estado serológico de su contacto sexual y uso de redes sociales para encuentros sexuales.


OBJECTIVE: To characterize a university population that willingly took a rapid HIV test by sex. METHOD: An analytical study with 3,864 university students. Variables: socio-demographic and academic variables, sexual behavior, (self-reported) STI prevalence, and reasons to take the rapid test. RESULTS: 61.4% are women; average age: 21.64 years; age of first sexual intercourse: 17.01 years; casual sexual activity: 36.8%, mostly men (p < 0,001), anal sex: 44.5%; STI prevalence: 7.5%, with gonorrhea and syphilis being more common among men (p < 0.001 and p < 0.032, respectively; positive rapid HIV test: 0.2%; substance use during sex: 50%. 41.1% of the participants, most of them men (p < 0.001), have never asked their partner about their serologic HIV status, and 64.4% does not know if they have had a HIV+ partner, an attitude that is more prevalent among men (p < 0.001). 16.5% has always used prophylactics, mostly women (p < 0.001). 26.21% uses social networks to arrange sexual encounters. CONCLUSIONS: Women ask more for the rapid HIV test than men. There are several risky behaviors and gender differences: low use of prophylactics, casual sexual relationships under the influence of substances, unprotected anal and oral sex practices, ignorance of their sexual partners serologic status, and the use of social networks for sexual encounters.

INTRODUCTION: Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection is characterised by a viral phase and a severe pro-inflammatory phase. The inhibition of the JAK/STAT pathway limits the pro-inflammatory state in moderate to severe COVID-19. METHODOLOGY: We analysed the data obtained by an observational cohort of patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia treated with ruxolitinib in 22 hospitals of Mexico. The applied dose was determined based on physician's criteria. The benefit of ruxolitinib was evaluated using the 8-points ordinal scale developed by the NIH in the ACTT1 trial. Duration of hospital stay, changes in pro-inflammatory laboratory values, mortality, and toxicity were also measured. RESULTS: A total of 287 patients were reported at 22 sites in Mexico from March to June 2020; 80.8% received ruxolitinib 5 mg BID and 19.16% received ruxolitinib 10 mg BID plus standard of care. At beginning of treatment, 223 patients were on oxygen support and 59 on invasive ventilation. The percentage of patients on invasive ventilation was 53% in the 10 mg and 13% in the 5 mg cohort. A statistically significant improvement measured as a reduction by 2 points on the 8-point ordinal scale was described (baseline 5.39 ± 0.93, final 3.67± 2.98, p = 0.0001). There were 74 deaths. Serious adverse events were presented in 6.9% of the patients. CONCLUSIONS: Ruxolitinib appears to be safe in COVID-19 patients, with clinical benefits observed in terms of decrease in the 8-point ordinal scale and pro-inflammatory state. Further studies must be done to ensure efficacy against mortality.

ABSTRACT

The production of ornamentals is an economic activity of great interest, particularly the production of Lilium. This plant is very attractive for its color and shapes; however, the quality of its flower and its shelf life can decrease very fast. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to develop techniques that allow for increasing both flower quality and shelf life. Nanotechnology has allowed for the use of various materials with unique characteristics. These materials can induce a series of positive responses in plants, among which the production of antioxidant compounds stands out. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of the application of silicone nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) on the quality, shelf life, and antioxidant status of Lilium. For this, different concentrations of SiO2 NPs (0, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 mg L-1) were applied in two ways, foliar and soil, as two independent experiments. The contents of enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase) and non-enzymatic (phenols, flavonoids, and glutathione) antioxidant compounds, the mineral content, flower quality, and shelf life were analyzed. The results showed that the application of SiO2 NPs through the foliar method induced a greater flowers' shelf life (up to 21.62% more than the control); greater contents of Mg, P, and S (up to 25.6%, 69.1%, and 113.9%, respectively, compared to the control); more photosynthetic pigment (up to 65.17% of total chlorophyll); more glutathione peroxidase activity (up to 69.9%); more phenols (up to 25.93%); and greater antioxidant capacity as evaluated by the DPPH method (up to 5.18%). The use of SiO2 NPs in the production of Lilium is a good alternative method to increase flower quality and shelf life.

ABSTRACT

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is the cause of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has a high case fatality rate. Most severely ill patients develop a special type of coagulopathy that had not been described before and that is now considered the main cause of death. For this reason, anticoagulant treatment has become one of the cornerstones of the treatment of this infection. However, the rate at which the evidence regarding the use of anticoagulants is generated is quite fast, and sometimes it is difficult to interpret and conflicting. After having performed an extensive review of the published literature, this proposal for the use of anticoagulant treatment is made, taking into account available resources in Mexico.


La infección por coronavirus 2 del síndrome respiratorio agudo grave (SARS-CoV-2) es la causante de la pandemia de enfermedad por coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), con un índice de letalidad alto. La mayoría de los pacientes graves desarrollan un tipo especial de coagulopatía no descrito hasta ahora y la cual se considera ahora la principal causa de muerte. Por esta razón, el tratamiento anticoagulante se ha convertido en una de las piedras angulares del tratamiento de esta infección. Sin embargo, la velocidad con la que se genera la evidencia respecto al uso de anticoagulantes es muy rápida y, en ocasiones difícil de interpretar y contradictoria. Luego de hacer una revisión extensa de la literatura publicada, se hace esta propuesta para el uso del tratamiento anticoagulante tomando en cuenta los recursos disponibles en México.

Introducción: La desensibilización rápida a medicamentos induce una tolerancia temporal a los quimioterapéuticos que provocan reacciones de hipersensibilidad. Objetivo: Evaluar el protocolo de desensibilización rápida en escenario ambulatorio en pacientes que presentaron reacciones de hipersensibilidad a fármacos citotóxicos. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional, y retrospectivo, de 30 pacientes con cáncer que desarrollaron reacciones de hipersensibilidad entre los años 2016 y 2018, tratados en el Hospital de Día del Servicio de Oncología del Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras. Se clasificaron según su intensidad, y se analizaron variables demográficas, características clínicas, y síntomas presentados. Se utilizó un protocolo en doce etapas basado en tres diluciones del fármaco. Se administró premedicación en todos los casos. Se realizó estadística descriptiva, y para la asociación entre variables, se utilizó la prueba estadística Chi-cuadrado. Resultados: La mediana de edad fue 54 años (23;77). Predominaron las mujeres; los menores de 60 años; tumor primario de colon; antecedentes de alergia; el oxaliplatino como fármaco más implicado; las RHS durante la infusión; e intensidad moderada. Fueron más frecuentes los síntomas cutáneos y gastrointestinales. Con la aplicación del protocolo se completó la quimioterapia planificada a los 30 pacientes (145 ciclos adicionales). Solo se presentaron ocho desensibilizaciones con reacciones leves de tipo cutáneas. El 94,5 por ciento de las desensibilizaciones no presentaron reacción alguna. Conclusiones: Constituye el primer reporte nacional de la utilización exitosa de un protocolo de desensibilización rápida a citostáticos que demostró ser eficaz y seguro en el escenario ambulatorio, con un manejo multidisciplinario(AU)


Introduction: Rapid desensitization to drugs induces a temporary tolerance to chemotherapeutics causing hypersensitivity reactions. Objective: To evaluate the rapid desensitization protocol in an outpatient setting in patients who had hypersensitivity reactions to cytotoxic drugs. Methods: An observational and retrospective study was carried out in 30 cancer patients, who developed hypersensitivity reactions, from 2016 to 2018. They were treated in the outpatient Oncology service at Hermanos Ameijeiras Surgical Clinical Hospital. These subjects were classified according to intensity; demographic variables, clinical characteristics, and symptoms were analyzed. A twelve-step protocol based on three dilutions of the drug was used. Premedication was administered in all cases. Descriptive statistics and for the association between variables were performed. Chi-square statistical test was used. Results: The median age was 54 years (23; 77). Predominance was observed in women, those under 60 years of age, primary colon tumor, history of allergy, oxaliplatin as the drug most implicated, HRH during infusion, and moderate intensity. Skin and gastrointestinal symptoms were more frequent. The planned chemotherapy was completed with the application of the protocol, in all 30 patients (145 additional cycles). There were only eight desensitization with mild skin-type reactions. 94.5 percent of desensitizations did not show any reaction. Conclusions: It constitutes the first national report of successful use of a rapid desensitization protocol to cytostatics that proved to be effective and safe in the outpatient setting with multidisciplinary management(AU)

ABSTRACT

The diseases that attack the tomato crop are a limiting factor for its production and are difficult to control or eradicate. Stem and fruit rot and leaf blight caused by Alternaria solani causes severe damage and substantial yield losses. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) could be an alternative for the control of pathogens since they have strong antimicrobial activity, in addition to inducing the activation of the antioxidant defense system in plants. In the present study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were evaluated on the incidence and severity of A. solani. Moreover, to the impact they have on the antioxidant defense system and the photosynthetic capacity of the tomato crop. The results show that the application of CNTs had multiple positive effects on tomato crop. CNTs decreased the incidence and severity of A. solani. Furthermore, CNTs increased the fruit yield of tomato crop and dry shoot biomass. The antioxidant system was improved, since the content of ascorbic acid, flavonoids, and the activity of the glutathione peroxidase enzyme were increased. The net photosynthesis and water use efficiency were also increased by the application of CNTs. CNTs can be an option to control A. solani in tomato crop, and diminish the negative impact of this pathogen.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal obesity increases the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and is positively correlated with neonatal obesity increasing the risk of adiposity in both young and adult offspring. Maternal secreted factors from adipose tissue such as adipokines and inflammatory cytokines may regulate fetal growth. This study investigated associations between maternal adipokines and inflammatory markers at late gestation, and neonatal anthropometric characteristics in mothers with and without GDM. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 65 women with GDM and 65 pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance evaluated at the time of term elective Caesarean section. Adiponectin, leptin, resistin, adipsin, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), nerve growth factor (NGF), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) concentrations were measured in maternal serum by the multiplex immunoassay using Magpix technology. C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured with a particle-enhanced turbidimetric immunoassay and neonatal anthropometric variables were assessed. The association of birthweight with individual biomarkers was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression adjusted for maternal factors. RESULTS: Adiponectin, leptin, resistin, adipsin, NGAL and NGF were not significantly associated with higher birthweight. The maternal factors in association with higher birthweight observed in GDM were CRP, MCP-1 and TNF-alpha levels. Regression analysis showed that TNF-alpha was an independent risk factor for higher birthweight (p = 0.046). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest an involvement of maternal inflammatory markers at late gestation and fetal growth in mothers with GDM, and that TNF-alpha could play a major role.

ABSTRACT

Systemic lupus erythematosus is characterized by high levels of IgG class autoantibodies that contribute to the pathophysiology of the disease. The formation of these autoantibodies occurs in the germinal centers, where there is cooperation between follicular T helper cells (TFH) and autoreactive B cells. Prolactin has been reported to exacerbate the clinical manifestations of lupus by increasing autoantibody concentrations. The objective of this study was to characterize the participation of prolactin in the differentiation and activation of TFH cells, by performing in vivo and in vitro tests with lupus-prone mice, using flow cytometry and real-time PCR. We found that TFH cells express the long isoform of the prolactin receptor and promoted STAT3 phosphorylation. Receptor expression was higher in MRL/lpr mice and correlative with the manifestations of the disease. Although prolactin does not intervene in the differentiation of TFH cells, it does favor their activation by increasing the percentage of TFH OX40+ and TFH IL21+ cells, as well as leading to high serum concentrations of IL21. These results support a mechanism in which prolactin participates in the emergence of lupus by inducing overactive TFH cells and perhaps promoting dysfunctional germinal centers.
