ABSTRACT

Cationic oncolytic polypeptides have gained increasing attention owing to their ability to directly lyse cancer cells and activate potent antitumor immunity. However, the low tumor cell selectivity and inherent toxicity induced by positive charges of oncolytic polypeptides hinder their systemic application. Herein, a tumor microenvironment-responsive nanoparticle (DNP) is developed by the self-assembly of a cationic oncolytic polypeptide (PLP) with a pH-sensitive anionic polypeptide via electrostatic interactions. After the formation of DNP, the positive charges of PLP are shielded. DNPs can keep stable in physiological conditions (pH 7.4) but respond to acidic tumor microenvironment (pH 6.8) to release oncolytic PLP. As a result, DNPs evoke potent immunogenic cell death by disrupting cell membranes, damaging mitochondria and increasing intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species. In vivo results indicate that DNPs significantly improve the biocompatibility of PLP, and inhibit tumor growth, recurrence and metastasis by direct oncolysis and activation of antitumor immune responses. In summary, these results indicate that pH-sensitive DNPs represent a prospective strategy to improve the tumor selectivity and biosafety of cationic polymers for oncolytic immunotherapy.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a total of 1425 atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples were collected and analyzed for four water-soluble inorganic ions from 2016-2021 in Shenzhen. The average PM2.5 concentrations exhibit an overall decreasing trend, with a total decrease of 57.5% during the six-year period, which is related to the reduction of emissions due to the 13th Five-Year Plan, the COVID-19, and the introduction of new energy conservation and emission reduction policies. The analyzed ions were all detected in PM2.5 during the observation period in the concentration order of SO42- >NO3- >NH4+ >Cl-. These ions also showed a declining trend over the six years, with the average concentrations of the four ions decreasing to 3.95, 2.25, 1.59, and 0.17 µg m-3 until 2021, respectively. Seasonally, the concentration of SO42- peaks in autumn and winter, and Cl- peaks in spring, while both NO3- and NH4+ peak in winter and spring. Variations in meteorological factors are the main contributors to their different seasonal concentrations. The average mass percentages of SO42-, NO3-, Cl- and NH4+ in PM2.5 are 51.2%, 25.5%, 2.7% and 20.6%, respectively. Three secondary ions (SO42-, NO3- and NH4+) contribute significantly to the formation of PM2.5 as well as having a stronger correlation with it.

Exposure to tobacco smoke and essential metals is linked with metabolic syndrome (MS). However, the joint effect of them on MS in older adults and the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. This large-scale study measured the urinary concentrations of 8 nicotine metabolites and 8 essential metals in 4564 older adults from Shenzhen, China. The biomarker of insulin resistance, triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), was also calculated. Restricted cubic splines (RCS), Bayesian kernel machine regression and quantile-based g-computation were used to access the single and joint effects of urinary nicotine metabolites and essential metals on MS and insulin resistance. Mediation analysis was performed to investigate the role of TyG in these relationships. Single urinary nicotine metabolite and essential metal had non-linear relationships with MS in RCS. The overall effect of urinary nicotine metabolites and essential metals was positively associated with MS. Urinary zinc (52.2 %) and copper (20.1 %) were the major contributors to MS, whereas molybdenum had a negative association with MS. TyG mediated 64.7 % of the overall effect of urinary nicotine metabolites and essential metals on MS. Overall, the mixture of urinary nicotine metabolites and essential metals had a dose-response relationship with MS. Insulin resistance was as a crucial mediated pathway in this association.

ABSTRACT

Parabens, bisphenols (BPs), and triclosan (TCS) are common environmental phenols widely applied in industrial products, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. They are endocrine disruptors and pervade the natural environment, causing significant detrimental impacts on ecosystems, including marine habitats. Therefore, in this study, 40 samples comprising coral polyps, algae, and sediments were collected from Sanya, Hainan Province, China, in which the presence and compositional profiles of parabens, BPs, and TCS were examined to identify their fate in the oceans. The results unveiled the ubiquitous occurrence of at least one paraben or bisphenol in all samples, with TCS detected in over 80% of cases. Notably, coral samples contained the most contaminants (median concentration: 9.42 ng/g dry weight-dw), followed by sediment samples (5.95 ng/g dw) and algal samples (3.58 ng/g dw). Attributed to their broadest application, methylparaben (MeP) and propylparaben (PrP) emerged as the primary paraben constituents. MeP displayed the highest median concentration in coral samples (4.42 ng/g dw), probably related to its high-water solubility and the filtration mechanism employed by the coral polyps during seawater intake. Intriguingly, bisphenol P (BPP) superseded bisphenol A (BPA) as the dominant bisphenol, especially in the algal samples, probably owing to the lipophilic character of BPP and the enhanced biodegradability of BPA within aquatic environments. The highest concentration of TCS (3.44 ng/g dw) was found in the sediment samples, associated with its long half-life in the sediments. Furthermore, the correlation between multiple parabens and TCS implies their co-use to augment antimicrobial efficacy. Future research should prioritize the examination of these phenols in diverse marine environmental media. Corresponding toxicological experiments should be conducted to visualize their transport dynamics, degradation byproducts, and toxicity to marine biota to gain insights into the risks they pose to the marine ecosystem.

ABSTRACT

Dyslipidemia is a prevalent metabolic disorder in older adults and has negative effects on cardiovascular health. However, the combined effect of paraben, bisphenol A (BPA), and triclosan (TCS) exposure on dyslipidemia and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This cross-sectional study recruited 486 individuals ≥60 years in Shenzhen, China. Morning spot urine samples were collected and analyzed for four parabens, BPA, TCS, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a typical biomarker for oxidative stress, using mass spectrometry. Blood samples were tested for lipid levels using an automated biochemical analyzer. Quantile-based g-computation (QGC) was used to assess the combined effects of exposures on dyslipidemia. Mediation analysis was applied to investigate the mediating role of 8-OHdG between exposure and dyslipidemia. QGC showed that co-exposure to parabens, BPA, and TCS was positively linked with hypercholesterolemia (OR: 1.17, 95%CI: 1.10-1.24, P<0.001) and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia (OR: 1.35, 95%CI: 1.05-1.75, P=0.019). Methylparaben (MeP), n-propyl paraben (PrP), and butylparaben (BtP) were the major contributors. 8-OHdG mediated 6.5% and 13.0% of the overall effect of the examined chemicals on hypercholesterolemia and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia, respectively (all P<0.05). Our study indicated that co-exposure to parabens, BPA, and TCS is associated with dyslipidemia and oxidative stress partially mediate the association. Future research is needed to explore additional mechanisms underlying these relationships.

ABSTRACT

Here we report a brand-new bioactive polymer featuring sulfonium moieties that exhibits the capability of inducing immunogenic cell death (ICD) for anticancer therapy. The optimized polysulfonium presents a wide spectrum of potent anticancer activity and remarkable selectivity. In-depth mechanistic studies reveal that the polymer exerts its cytotoxic effects on cancer cells through a membrane-disrupting mechanism. This further initiates the release of a plethora of damage-associated molecular patterns, effectively triggering ICD and resulting in systemic anticancer immune responses. Notably, the compound demonstrated significant efficacy in suppressing tumor growth in the B16-F10 melanoma tumor model. Furthermore, it exhibits robust immune memory effects, effectively suppressing tumor recurrence and metastasis in both the rechallenge model and the lung metastatic tumor model. To the best of our knowledge, the study represents the pioneering exportation of cationic polysulfoniums, showcasing not only their remarkable safety and efficacy against primary tumors but also their unique ability in activating long-term immune memory.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of trace elements from industrial and traffic activities poses potential health risks through inhalation exposure. Prior studies have focused on trace elements in water, food, and dust, and less attention has been paid to their occurrence in fine particulate matter (PM2.5). In this study, 1424 air samples were collected from three districts (Nanshan, Longgang, and Yantian) in Shenzhen from 2016 to 2021, and we analyzed the concentrations, temporal trends, and spatial distributions of PM2.5 and associated trace elements. Both PM2.5 and trace elements exhibited decreasing trends and similar seasonal variations, with high levels in cold seasons and low levels in warm seasons. In terms of spatial distributions, the concentrations of PM2.5 and trace elements in Nanshan and Longgang were significantly higher than those in Yantian, likely due to the industrial structure and traffic activities. It is worth noting that PM2.5 was identified as a potential mediator of the effect of meteorological parameters on trace element levels. Besides, the values of estimated daily intake (EDI) and uptake (EDU) suggested that infants and young children experienced an elevated risk of exposure to trace elements. While the annual average excess hazard indexes (R) were below the safety threshold (10-6), carcinogenic trace elements like arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr) posed a greater potential threat to human health compared to non-carcinogenic trace elements.

ABSTRACT

To explore the clinical efficacy and pharmacological mechanism analysis of Xubi capsule in the treatment of patients with liver and kidney deficiency osteoarthritis (OA). In this single-center retrospective study, 120 patients with liver and kidney deficiency OA admitted to the Hangzhou Fuyang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2020 to May 2022 were included, and patients were divided into the intervention group (n = 60) and the control group (n = 60) according to their treatment. The control group was treated with Ibuprofen, while the intervention group was treated with Xubi capsule combined with Ibuprofen. According to the network pharmacology method, the mechanism of the Xubi capsule in the treatment of patients with liver and kidney deficiency OA was analyzed. After the treatment, the total effective rate in the intervention group was 93.33%, which was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < .001). After treatment, compared with the control group, the degree of joint swelling and tenderness in the intervention group were lighter, the muscle strength was better, the level of erythrocyte sedimentation rate was lower, and the pain visual score was lower (P < .05), while the C-reactive protein level was significantly lower (P < .001). The effective chemical composition of Xubi capsules is 176, with quercetin and palmitoleic acid being the most associated with diseases. There are 209 intersection targets between drugs and diseases. A total of 119 gene ontology cellular components were significantly enriched. The combination of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine adopted in this study can effectively treat patients with liver and kidney deficiency OA and relieve the joint pain of patients. In a multicomponent and multitarget approach, the Xubi capsule breaks through the limitations of traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and has good clinical application value.

ABSTRACT

A submicrometric and hierarchical hollow SAPO-34 molecular sieve was synthesized by an easy and low-cost two-step hydrothermal method. First, the crystallized mixture was obtained by direct drying after a first-step hydrothermal reaction. Then, the SAPO-34 product was obtained by adding the crystallized mixture to silicon-free gel and using cheap and common template agents. Compared to conventional SAPO-34, the submicrometric and hierarchical hollow SAPO-34 exhibits superior catalytic activity in the MTO reaction.

ABSTRACT

Bisphenols, parabens, and triclosan (TCS) are common endocrine disrupters used in various consumer products. These chemicals have been shown to cross the placental barrier and affect intrauterine development of fetuses. In this study, we quantified serum levels of six bisphenols, five parabens, and TCS in 483 pregnant women from southern China. Quantile-based g-computation showed that combined exposure to bisphenols, parabens, and TCS was significantly (p < 0.05) and negatively associated with birth weight (ß = -39.9, 95% CI: -73.8, -6.1), birth length (ß = -0.19, 95% CI: -0.34, -0.04), head circumference (ß = -0.13, 95% CI: -0.24, -0.02), and thoracic circumference (ß = -0.16, 95% CI: -0.29, -0.04). An inverse correlation was also identified between mixture exposure and gestational age (ß = -0.12, 95% CI: -0.24, -0.01). Bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol Z (BPZ), bisphenol AP (BPAP), propylparaben (PrP), and TCS served as the dominant contributors to the overall effect. In subgroup analyses, male newborns were more susceptible to mixture exposure than females, whereas the exposure-outcome link was prominent among pregnant women in the first and second trimesters. More evidence is warranted to elucidate the impacts of exposure to mixtures on birth outcomes, as well as the underlying mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study examined the effects of microbial agents on the enzyme activity, microbial community construction and potential functions of inter-root soil of aubergine (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.). This study also sought to clarify the adaptability of inter-root microorganisms to environmental factors to provide a theoretical basis for the stability of the microbiology of inter-root soil of aubergine and for the ecological preservation of farmland soil. Methods: Eggplant inter-root soils treated with Bacillus subtilis (QZ_T1), Bacillus subtilis (QZ_T2), Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (QZ_T3), Verticillium thuringiensis (QZ_T4) and Verticillium purpureum (QZ_T5) were used to analyse the effects of different microbial agents on the inter-root soils of aubergine compared to the untreated control group (QZ_CK). The effects of different microbial agents on the characteristics and functions of inter-root soil microbial communities were analysed using 16S rRNA and ITS (internal transcribed spacer region) high-throughput sequencing techniques. Results: The bacterial diversity index and fungal diversity index of the aubergine inter-root soil increased significantly with the application of microbial fungicides; gas exchange parameters and soil enzyme activities also increased. The structural and functional composition of the bacterial and fungal communities in the aubergine inter-root soil changed after fungicide treatment compared to the control, with a decrease in the abundance of phytopathogenic fungi and an increase in the abundance of beneficial fungi in the soil. Enhancement of key community functions, reduction of pathogenic fungi, modulation of environmental factors and improved functional stability of microbial communities were important factors contributing to the microbial stability of fungicide-treated aubergine inter-root soils.

ABSTRACT

Background: FAR1/FHY3 transcription factors are derived from transposase, which play important roles in light signal transduction, growth and development, and response to stress by regulating downstream gene expression. Although many FAR1/FHY3 members have been identified in various species, the FAR1/FHY3 genes in maize are not well characterized and their function in drought are unknown. Method: The FAR1/FHY3 family in the maize genome was identified using PlantTFDB, Pfam, Smart, and NCBI-CDD websites. In order to investigate the evolution and functions of FAR1 genes in maize, the information of protein sequences, chromosome localization, subcellular localization, conserved motifs, evolutionary relationships and tissue expression patterns were analyzed by bioinformatics, and the expression patterns under drought stress were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Results: A total of 24 ZmFAR members in maize genome, which can be divided into five subfamilies, with large differences in protein and gene structures among subfamilies. The promoter regions of ZmFARs contain abundant abiotic stress-responsive and hormone-respovensive cis-elements. Among them, drought-responsive cis-elements are quite abundant. ZmFARs were expressed in all tissues detected, but the expression level varies widely. The expression of ZmFARs were mostly down-regulated in primary roots, seminal roots, lateral roots, and mesocotyls under water deficit. Most ZmFARs were down-regulated in root after PEG-simulated drought stress. Conclusions: We performed a genome-wide and systematic identification of FAR1/FHY3 genes in maize. And most ZmFARs were down-regulated in root after drought stress. These results indicate that FAR1/FHY3 transcription factors have important roles in drought stress response, which can lay a foundation for further analysis of the functions of ZmFARs in response to drought stress.

ABSTRACT

Prothioconazole and its metabolite are considered a potential threat to human health and environmental safety. Thus, the development of a sensitive and rapid detection method for prothioconazole is crucial to ensure the safety of agricultural products. In this study, a new hapten of prothioconazole was designed and synthesized, and a selective polyclonal antibody with high affinity against prothioconazole was produced, which was obtained from immunized New Zealand white rabbits. Based on the polyclonal antibody, an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ic-ELISA) and indirect competitive chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay (ic-CLEIA) were developed for detecting prothioconazole pesticides. Under optimized experimental conditions, the limit of quantification (LOQ) values for ic-CLEIA and ic-ELISA were 1.8 and 10.7 ng mL-1, respectively. The results demonstrated that the sensitivity (LOQ) achieved by ic-CLEIA was more than five times higher compared to that obtained with ic-ELISA. In addition, the recoveries obtained by adding standard prothioconazole to wheat grain, soybean, and pond water samples were in the range of 81.9 to 104.7% for ic-ELISA and 89.0 to 118.0% for ic-CLEIA.

ABSTRACT

The extensive utilization of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has led to their pervasive presence in the environment, resulting in contamination of aquatic products. Prolonged exposure to PFASs has been linked to direct hepatic and renal damage, along with the induction of oxidative stress, contributing to a spectrum of chronic ailments. Despite the recent surge in popularity of red swamp crayfish as a culinary delicacy in China, studies addressing PFASs' exposure and associated health risks from their consumption remain scarce. To address this gap, our study investigated the PFASs' content in 85 paired edible tissue samples sourced from the five primary red swamp crayfish breeding provinces in China. The health risks associated with dietary exposure were also assessed. Our findings revealed widespread detection of PFASs in crayfish samples, with short-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) exhibiting the highest concentrations. Notably, the total PFAS concentration in the hepatopancreas (median: 160 ng/g) significantly exceeded that in muscle tissue (5.95 ng/g), as did the concentration of every single substance. The hazard quotient of perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) via consuming crayfish during peak season exceeded 1. In this case, a potential total non-cancer health risk of PFASs, which is mainly from the hepatopancreas and associated with PFHxS, is also observed (hazard index>1). Thus, it is recommended to avoid consuming the hepatopancreas of red swamp crayfish. Greater attention should be paid to governance technology innovation and regulatory measure strengthening for short-chain PFASs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) resulting from ureteral stones in the emergency department is typically accompanied with anxiety and sleep issues in patients, which can have adverse effects on their mental health and quality of life. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful in improving mental health and sleep. This work aims to analyse the effects of CBT on mental health and sleep of AKI patients caused by ureteral calculi in the emergency department. METHODS: The clinical data of patients with AKI caused by ureteral calculi in the emergency department of our hospital from February 2021 to February 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into the control group (routine nursing) and observation group (cognitive behavioural nursing) according to the different nursing methods of data recording. Propensity Score Matching (PSM) was used to balance the confounding factors of the two groups. After matching, the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale-Adult (MUIS) and 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: After matching at a ratio of 1:1, 130 patients were included in the observation group and the control group, with 65 cases in each group. No significant difference was observed in STAI, ISI, MUIS and SF-36 scores between the two groups before nursing (p > 0.05). After nursing, the STAI, ISI and MUIS scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the SF-36 score of the observation group was higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Cognitive behavioural nursing for patients with AKI caused by ureteral calculi in the emergency department may help in retrieving patients' anxiety, reducing the severity of disease uncertainty and insomnia, improving the quality of life of patients and providing theoretical reference for clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Host defense peptide-mimicking cationic oncolytic polymers have attracted increasing attention for cancer treatment in recent years. However, polymers with large amounts of positive charge may cause rapid clearance and severe off-target toxicity. To facilitate in vivo application, an alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-responsive oncolytic polypeptide precursor (C12-PLL/PA) has been reported in this work. C12-PLL/PA could be hydrolyzed into the active form of the oncolytic polypeptide (C12-PLL) by the extracellular alkaline phosphatase within solid tumors, thereby resulting in the conversion of the negative charge to positive charge and restoring its membrane-lytic activity. Detailed mechanistic studies showed that C12-PLL/PA could effectively destroy cancer cell membranes and subsequently result in rapid necrosis of cancer cells. More importantly, C12-PLL/PA significantly inhibited the tumor growth in the 4T1 orthotopic breast tumor model with negligible side effects. In summary, these findings demonstrated that the shielding of the amino groups with phosphate groups represents a secure and effective strategy to develop cationic oncolytic polypeptide, which represents a valuable reference for the design of enzyme-activated oncolytic polymers. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Recently, there has been a growing interest in fabricating host defense peptide-mimicking cationic oncolytic polymers for cancer therapy. However, there remain concerns about the tumor selectivity and off-target toxicity of these cationic polymers. In this study, an alkaline phosphatase-responsive oncolytic polypeptide precursor (C12-PLL/PA) has been developed to selectively target cancer cells while sparing normal cells. Mechanistic investigations demonstrated that C12-PLL/PA effectively disrupted cancer cell membranes, leading to rapid necrosis. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments showed promising anticancer activity and reliable safety of C12-PLL/PA. The findings suggest that this synthetic enzyme-responsive polypeptide holds potential as a tumor-specific oncolytic polymer, paving the way for future applications in cancer therapy.

ABSTRACT

The uptake of COVID-19 booster vaccination among older adults in China is suboptimal. Here, we report the results of a parallel-group cluster-randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of promoting COVID-19 booster vaccination among grandparents (≥60 years) through a health education intervention delivered to their grandchildren (aged ≥16 years) in a Chinese cohort (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry: ChiCTR2200063240 ). The primary outcome was the uptake rate of COVID-19 booster dose among grandparents. Secondary outcomes include grandparents' attitude and intention to get a COVID-19 booster dose. A total of 202 college students were randomized 1:1 to either the intervention arm of web-based health education and 14 daily reminders (n = 188 grandparents) or control arm (n = 187 grandparents) and reported their grandparents' COVID-19 booster vaccination status at baseline and 21 days. Grandparents in the intervention arm were more likely to receive COVID-19 booster vaccination compared to control cohort (intervention, 30.6%; control, 16.9%; risk ratio = 2.00 (95% CI, 1.09 to 3.66)). Grandparents in the intervention arm also had greater attitude change (ß = 0.28 (95% CI, 0.04 to 0.52)) and intention change (ß = 0.32 (95% CI, 0.12 to 0.52)) to receive a COVID-19 booster dose. Our results show that an educational intervention targeting college students increased COVID-19 booster vaccination uptake among grandparents in China.

ABSTRACT

The efficacy of 400mg efavirenz (EFV) once daily is reported to be similar to that of 600mg EFV. However, EFV-related toxic and side effects of 400mg EFV are significantly reduced. Here, the feasibility of reducing EFV to 400mg once a day in HIV-infected/AIDS patients was evaluated. Fifty patients were included. Patients were given 3TC+TDF+400mg EFV (n=25) or 3TC+TDF+600mg EFV (n=25). The proportion of patients with HIV RNA < 40 copies/mL and the adverse events served as the primary and secondary outcomes, respectively. HIV inhibition rates of the 3TC+TDF+400mg EFV group and 3TC+TDF+600mg EFV group were both 56.52% at week 24 and respectively 100%, 91.3% at week 48. During 48 weeks, 27 cases of adverse events were reported in the 3TC+TDF+400mg EFV group, lower than those in the 3TC+TDF+600mg EFV group, which had 39 cases. Compared with the 3TC+TDF+400mg EFV group, the incidence of transaminase, dizziness, hyperlipidemia and rashes all increased in the 3TC+TDF+600mg EFV group (P>0.05). No serious adverse events of the central nervous system occurred. The incidence of depression, sleep disturbance, and vertigo were similar (P>0.05). The efficacy of 400mg EFV is comparable to 600mg EFV. However, patients receiving 400mg EFV have fewer adverse events.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies suggest that voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) may lower HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM). A randomized controlled trial (RCT) is needed to confirm this. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of VMMC in preventing incident HIV infection among MSM. DESIGN: An RCT with up to 12 months of follow-up. (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry: ChiCTR2000039436). SETTING: 8 cities in China. PARTICIPANTS: Uncircumcised, HIV-seronegative men aged 18 to 49 years who self-reported predominantly practicing insertive anal intercourse and had 2 or more male sex partners in the past 6 months. INTERVENTION: VMMC. MEASUREMENTS: Rapid testing for HIV was done at baseline and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Behavioral questionnaires and other tests for sexually transmitted infections were done at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. The primary outcome was HIV seroconversion using an intention-to-treat analysis. RESULTS: The study enrolled 124 men in the intervention group and 123 in the control group, who contributed 120.7 and 123.1 person-years of observation, respectively. There were 0 seroconversions in the intervention group (0 infections [95% CI, 0.0 to 3.1 infections] per 100 person-years) and 5 seroconversions in the control group (4.1 infections [CI, 1.3 to 9.5 infections] per 100 person-years). The HIV hazard ratio was 0.09 (CI, 0.00 to 0.81; P = 0.029), and the HIV incidence was lower in the intervention group (log-rank P = 0.025). The incidence rates of syphilis, herpes simplex virus type 2, and penile human papillomavirus were not statistically significantly different between the 2 groups. There was no evidence of HIV risk compensation. LIMITATION: Few HIV seroconversions and limited follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Among MSM who predominantly practice insertive anal intercourse, VMMC is efficacious in preventing incident HIV infection; MSM should be included in VMMC guidelines. Bisphenol analogs (BPs) are extensively employed in commercial and industrial products and they have been found in a variety of environmental matrices and human samples. The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) has been a trendy food in China in recent decades. However, the levels of BPs in Chinese crayfish and the associated hazards of human exposure remain unknown. Thus, in this study, the levels of eight BPs in crayfish gathered from five major provinces engaged in crayfish within the Yangtze River Basin were analyzed. Additionally, the health risks for humans by ingesting crayfish were calculated. BPs were frequently detected in crayfish tissues, indicating the wide occurrence of these chemicals. In comparison to other substitutions, BPA remains the dominant bisphenol analog. Most of the BPs were observed to accumulate in the hepatopancreas compared to the muscle, so consuming the hepatopancreas of crayfish is not recommended. With the exception of BPS, the Estimated Daily Intakes (EDIs) of the remaining BPs exceeded the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) specified by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) by a factor of 1.75-69.0. The mean hazard index (HI) values exceeded 1 for both hepatopancreas and muscle in all provinces, and the mean HI values for hepatopancreas were significantly higher than those for muscle, indicating potential health risks for local consumers.
