ABSTRACT

A polyad-conserving algebraic model applied to vibrational excitations of asymmetric isotopologues of CO2 is presented. First, the problem of vibrational excitations is studied by taking into account only the minimum subspace of states to characterize the Fermi interaction. This analysis allows an estimation of the force constants as well as the feasibility of describing the system in a local mode scheme, in terms of SU(2) operators associated with Morse ladder operators for the stretches. This description together with the algebraic U(3) for the bends establishes the dynamical group SU1(2) × U(3) × SU2(2) for a series of isotopologues. Six isotopologues are considered, namely, 16O12C18O, 16O12C17O, 16O13C18O, 16O13C17O, 17O13C18O, and 17O12C18O in their electronic ground states. For isotopologues 16O12C18O, 16O12C17O, 17O12C18O, and 16O13C18O, the vibrational description was carried out using a Hamiltonian involving 14 parameters. For this series of isotopologues with a number of energy terms 90, 57, 42, and 40, the deviations obtained were rms = 0.15, 0.10, 0.06, and 0.07 cm-1, respectively. For 16O13C17O, with 28 experimental energies and involving 13 parameters, the deviation was rms = 0.05 cm-1, while for 17O13C18O, a different strategy was proposed since only 12 experimental energy levels. In all cases, the polyad scheme P212 = 2(ν1 + ν3) + ν2 was considered. In addition, a new criterion of locality/normality degree is proposed, embracing the case of molecules with normal mode behavior, in particular, the isotopologues of CO2.

ABSTRACT

The biology of cancer stem cells (CSCs) of pediatric cancers, such as hepatoblastoma, is sparsely explored. This is mainly due to the very immature nature of these tumors, which complicates the distinction of CSCs from the other tumor cells. Previously, we identified a CSC population in hepatoblastoma cell lines expressing the CSC markers CD34 and CD90, cell surface Vimentin (csVimentin) and binding of OV-6. In this study, we detected the co-expression of the immune escape factor PD-L1 in the CSC population, whereas the other tumor cells remained negative. FACS data revealed that non-CSCs give rise to CSCs, reflecting plasticity of CSCs and non-CSCs in hepatoblastoma as seen in other tumors. When we treated cells with cisplatin and decitabine, a new CD34+/lowOV-6lowCD90+ population emerged that lacked csVimentin and PD-L1 expression. Expression analyses showed that this new CSC subset shared similar pluripotency and EMT features with the already-known CSCs. FACS results further revealed that this subset is also generated from non-CSCs. In conclusion, we showed that hepatoblastoma CSCs express PD-L1 and that the biology of hepatoblastoma CSCs is of a plastic nature. Chemotherapeutic treatment leads to another CSC subset, which is highly chemoresistant and could be responsible for a poor prognosis after postoperative chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Significant progress has been made in the management of Wilms tumor (WT) in recent years, mostly as a result of collaborative efforts and the implementation of protocol-driven, multimodal therapy. This article offers a comprehensive overview of current multidisciplinary treatment strategies for WT, whilst also addressing recent technical innovations including nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) and minimally invasive approaches. In addition, surgical concepts for the treatment of metastatic disease, advances in tumor imaging technology and potentially prognostic biomarkers will be discussed. Current evidence suggests that, in experienced hands and selected cases, laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and laparoscopic-assisted partial nephrectomy for WT may offer the same outcome as the traditional open approach. While NSS is the standard procedure for bilateral WT, NSS has evolved as an alternative technique in patients with smaller unilateral WT and in cases with imminent renal failure. Metastatic disease of the lung or liver that is associated with WT is preferably treated with a three-drug chemotherapy and local radiation therapy. However, surgical sampling of lung nodules may be advisable in persistent nodules before whole lung irradiation is commenced. Several tumor markers such as loss of heterozygosity of chromosomes 1p/16q, 11p15 and gain of function at 1q are associated with an increased risk of recurrence or a decreased risk of overall survival in patients with WT. In summary, complete resection with tumor-free margins remains the primary surgical aim in WT, while NSS and minimally invasive approaches are only suitable in a subset of patients with smaller WT and low-risk disease. In the future, advances in tumor imaging technology may assist the surgeon in defining surgical resection margins and additional biomarkers may emerge as targets for development of new diagnostic tests and potential therapies.

ABSTRACT

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder affecting 0.6-0.75% of dogs in veterinary practice. Treatment is frequently complicated by the occurrence of drug-resistant epilepsy and cluster seizures in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy. Only few studies are available to guide treatment choices beyond licensed veterinary drugs. The aim of the study was to compare antiseizure efficacy and tolerability of two add-on treatment strategies in dogs with drug-resistant idiopathic epilepsy. The study design was a prospective, open-label, non-blinded, comparative treatment trial. Treatment success was defined as a 3-fold extension of the longest baseline interseizure interval and to a minimum of 3 months. To avoid prolonged adherence to a presumably ineffective treatment strategy, dog owners could leave the study after the third day with generalized seizures if the interseizure interval failed to show a relevant increase. Twenty-six dogs (mean age 5.5 years, mean seizure frequency 4/month) with drug-resistant idiopathic epilepsy and a history of cluster seizures were included. Dogs received either add-on treatment with pregabalin (PGB) 4 mg/kg twice daily (14 dogs) or a dose increase in levetiracetam (LEV) add-on treatment (12 dogs). Thirteen dogs in the PGB group had drug levels within the therapeutic range for humans. Two dogs in the PGB group (14.3%; 2/14) and one dog in the LEV group (8.3%; 1/12) achieved treatment success with long seizure-free intervals from 122 to 219 days but then relapsed to their early seizure frequency 10 months after the study inclusion. The overall low success rates with both treatment strategies likely reflect a real-life situation in canine drug-resistant idiopathic epilepsy in everyday veterinary practice. These results delineate the need for research on better pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment strategies in dogs with drug-resistant epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: In order to avoid consequences of total splenectomy, partial splenectomy (PS) is increasingly reported. The purpose of this study was to compare perioperative outcomes of laparoscopic PS (LPS) and open PS (OPS) in children and adolescents. AIM: To compare perioperative outcomes of patients with LPS and OPS. METHODS: After institutional review board approval, a total of 26 patients that underwent LPS or OPS between January 2008 and July 2018 were identified from the database of our tertiary referral center. In total, 10 patients had LPS, and 16 patients underwent OPS. Blood loss was calculated by Mercuriali's formula. Pain scores, analgesic requirements and complications were assessed. The Wilcoxon rank sum test was used for comparison. To compare categorical variables, Fisher's exact test was applied. RESULTS: LPS was performed in 10 patients; 16 patients had OPS. Demographics (except for body mass index and duration of follow-up), indicating primary disease, preoperative spleen size and postoperative spleen volume, perioperative hematological parameters, postoperative pain scores, analgesic requirements, adverse events according to the Clavien-Dindo classification and the comprehensive complication index, median time from operation to initiation of feeds, median time from operation to full feeds, median time from operation to mobilization and median length of hospital stay did not differ between LPS and OPS. Median (range) operative time (min) was longer in LPS compared to the OPS group [185 (135-298) vs 144 (112-270), respectively; P = 0.048]. Calculated perioperative blood loss (mL of red blood cell count) was higher in the LPS group compared to OPS [87 (-45-777) vs -37 (-114-553), respectively; P = 0.039]. CONCLUSION: This is the first study that compared outcomes of LPS and OPS. Both operative approaches had comparable perioperative outcomes. LPS appears to be a viable alternative to OPS.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are nowadays one of the major focuses in tumor research since this subpopulation was revealed to be a great obstacle for successful treatment. The identification of CSCs in pediatric solid tumors harbors major challenges because of the immature character of these tumors. Here, we present CD34, CD90, OV-6 and cell-surface vimentin (csVimentin) as reliable markers to identify CSCs in hepatoblastoma cell lines. We were able to identify CSC characteristics for the subset of CD34+CD90+OV-6+csVimentin+-co-expressing cells, such as pluripotency, self-renewal, increased expression of EMT markers and migration. Treatment with Cisplatin as the standard chemotherapeutic drug in hepatoblastoma therapy further revealed the chemo-resistance of this subset, which is a main characteristic of CSCs. When we treated the cells with the Hsp90 inhibitor 17-AAG, we observed a significant reduction in the CSC subset. With our study, we identified CSCs of hepatoblastoma using CD34, CD90, OV-6 and csVimentin. This set of markers could be helpful to estimate the success of novel therapeutic approaches, as resistant CSCs are responsible for tumor relapses.

Objectives: Ovarian lesions are rare but frequent in children. Patients could present with abdominal pain, but ovarian lesions could also be incidentally found on ultrasound. Awareness is required in cases with acute, severe lower abdominal pain, as ovarian torsion could be the cause. Other lesions can be cysts or benign or malignant ovarian tumors. Thus, the aim of this paper is to review typical ovarian lesions according to age, imaging and laboratory findings, and surgical management. Methods: We retrospectively analysed the patient charts of 39 patients aged 10.4 ± 6.1 years (from 3 months to 18 years) with ovarian lesions treated in our institution between 01/2009 and 08/2020. All clinical and pathological findings of infants and children operated on for ovarian lesions were included. Results: Ovarian lesions in children younger than 2 years of age were typically ovarian cysts, and ovarian tumors were not observed in this age group. In older children over 10 years of age, tumors were more common - with mostly teratoma or other germ cell tumors, followed by epithelial tumors. Moreover, acute or chronic ovarian torsion was observed in all age groups. In general, ovarian tumors were much larger in size than ovarian cysts or twisted ovaries and eventually showed tumor marker expression of AFP or ß-HCG. Simple ovarian cysts or twisted ovaries were smaller in size. Surgery for all ovarian lesions should aim to preserve healthy ovarian tissue by performing partial ovariectomy. Conclusions: In adolescent girls with acute abdominal pain, immediate laparoscopy should be performed to rule out ovarian torsion. Careful imaging evaluation and the assessment of tumor markers should be performed in painless ovarian lesions to indicate an adequate surgical ovarian-sparing approach.

ABSTRACT

A 9-year-old Cairn Terrier was presented for a right thoracic limb lameness of 3-month duration resistant to anti-inflammatory pain treatment. Blood chemistry revealed a highly elevated creatine kinase activity. An orthopedic or vascular etiology of the lameness was excluded by radiographs, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Further workup for a neurologic or muscular etiology by electromyography, nerve conduction velocity measurement, and histology of muscle as well as nerve biopsies identified the cause of the lameness. Histology revealed a pyogranulomatous, necrotizing myositis with parasites of the species Trichinella. Furthermore different developmental stages of fungi were detected which were identified as Mucor sp. Treatment with albendazole and itraconazole significantly improved the patient's clinical signs.

ABSTRACT

Visualisation of the groundwater flow and contaminant transport can play a significant role for a better understanding of contaminant fate, which helps decision-makers and contaminated site planners to choose and implement the best remediation strategies. In this paper, a microfluidic chip coated with nanoclay was developed to mimic soil behaviour. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed that all the features and surfaces are coated with nanoclay. The change of contact angle for the native polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) from 151°â€¯±â€¯4° to 73°â€¯±â€¯6° for modified ones is indicative of a considerable shift to hydrophilic behaviour. Moreover, the transport process in the developed chip was simulated utilising the Theory of Porous Media (TPM) and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approaches. Although the results of both numerical approaches are in good agreement with experiments, the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of the predicted contaminant concentration by TPM at two observation points is less than that of CFD.

BACKGROUND: Congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) can be complete (CCDO) or incomplete (ICDO). To date there is no outcome analysis available that compares both subtypes. AIM: To quantify and compare the association between CCDO and ICDO with outcome parameters. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent operative repair of CCDO or ICDO in our tertiary care institution between January 2004 and January 2017. The demographics, clinical presentation, preoperative diagnostics and postoperative outcomes of 50 patients were compared between CCDO (n = 27; atresia type 1-3, annular pancreas) and ICDO (n = 23; annular pancreas, web, Ladd´s bands). RESULTS: In total, 50 patients who underwent CDO repair were enrolled and followed for a median of 5.2 and 3.9 years (CCDO and ICDO, resp.). CCDO was associated with a significantly higher prenatal ultrasonographic detection rate (88% versus 4%; CCDO vs ICDO, P < 0.01), lower gestational age at birth, lower age and weight at operation, higher rate of associated congenital heart disease (CHD), more extensive preoperative radiologic diagnostics, higher morbidity according to Clavien-Dindo classification and comprehensive complication index (all P ≤ 0.01). The subgroup analysis of patients without CHD and prematurity showed a longer time from operation to the initiation of enteral feeds in the CCDO group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: CCDO and ICDO differ with regard to prenatal detection rate, gestational age, age and weight at operation, rate of associated CHD, preoperative diagnostics and morbidity. The degree of CDO in mature patients without CHD influences the postoperative initiation of enteral feeding.

ABSTRACT

Fossil derivatives of isorenieratene, an accessory pigment in brown-colored green sulfur bacteria, are often used as tracers for photic zone anoxia through Earth's history, but their diagenetic behavior is still incompletely understood. Here, we assess the preservation of isorenieratene derivatives in organic-rich shales (1.5-8.4 wt.% TOC) from two Lower Jurassic anoxic systems (Bächental oil shale, Tyrol, Austria; Posidonia Shale, Baden-Württemberg, Germany). Bitumens and kerogens were investigated using catalytic hydropyrolysis (HyPy), closed-system hydrous pyrolysis (in gold capsules), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio-mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS). Petrography and biomarkers indicate a syngenetic relationship between bitumens and kerogens. All bitumens contain abundant isorenieratane, diverse complex aromatized isorenieratene derivatives, and a pseudohomologous series of 2,3,6-trimethyl aryl isoprenoids. In contrast, HyPy and mild closed-system hydrous pyrolysis of the kerogens yielded only minor amounts of these compounds. Given the overall low maturity of the organic matter (below oil window), it appears that isorenieratene and its abundant derivatives from the bitumen had not been incorporated into the kerogens. Accordingly, sulfur cross-linking, the key mechanism for sequestration of functionalized lipids into kerogens in anoxic systems, was not effective in the Jurassic environments studied. We explain this by (i) early cyclization/aromatization and (ii) hydrogenation reactions that have prevented effective sulfurization. In addition, (iii) sulfide was locally removed via anoxygenic photosynthesis and efficiently trapped by the reaction with sedimentary iron, as further indicated by elevated iron contents (4.0-8.7 wt.%) and the presence of abundant pyrite aggregates in the rock matrix. Although the combined processes have hampered the kerogen incorporation of isorenieratene and its derivatives, they may have promoted the long-term preservation of these biomarkers in the bitumen fraction via early defunctionalization. This particular taphonomy of aromatic carotenoids has to be considered in studies of anoxic iron-rich environments (e.g., the Proterozoic ocean).

BACKGROUND: Quality assurance and quality management are driving forces for controlling blood culture best practices but should not be disconnected from the end-point target, i.e. patient value. AIMS: This article is intended to help microbiologists implement blood culture accreditation that is actually beneficial to patient management. SOURCES: Experience from a nationwide taskforce for promoting quality assurance and competence in clinical microbiology laboratories, guidelines on blood culture. CONTENT: Experience in blood culture accreditation according to International standard ISO 15189 standards is provided in this review, with a particular focus on critical points that are specific to blood culture (e.g. excluding strain identification or antimicrobial susceptibility testing). Blood culture test method verification is based on risk analysis, and evaluation of the test method's performance is based on the literature review and suppliers' data. In addition, blood culture performance relies largely on the quality of its pre-analytical phase, and the test method should be monitored based on key performance indicators such as the volume of blood cultured, the contamination rate and time to transportation. Other critical key indicators include the rate of false-positive signals, the rate of positive blood cultures, the ecology associated with positive results, and the timely communication of the results to the ward during the post-analytical phase. Finally, a critical analysis of quality controls and of the tools needed to improve blood culture monitoring in the future is provided. IMPLICATION: Appropriate quality assurance should focus on patient value rather than technical details to provide an appropriate clinical service.

ABSTRACT

Positive emotions constitute a very important part of animal welfare. They are, however, also the most challenging elements to be objectively measured. Due to its feasibility, the qualitative behavior assessment (QBA) is included in the Welfare Quality Assessment protocol for growing pigs as the animal-based measurement tool for positive emotions. Reliability testing on the QBA in the form as included in the protocols is, however, rare. Therefore, the present study aimed at the evaluation of the inter- and intraobserver as well as test-retest reliability of the QBA in growing pigs. This was done by trained observers based on 19 joint on-farm assessments, the repeated assessments of 24 farms during 2 growing periods, and 107 video sequences. The results were compared between the observers and the repeated farm visits. Therefore, millimeter values were directly compared by calculation of Spearman's rank correlation coefficients (RS), and furthermore, the results were subjected to a principal component analysis (PCA). The results identified 2 main principal components (PC; PC1 and PC2) together explaining from 42 to 75% of the variation in the recorded variables of the different PCA. The factor loadings that the adjectives reached on PC1 and PC2 were compared by calculation of RS between observers and farm visits, respectively. Reliability was interpreted as acceptable if at least a moderate correlation was detected; that is, RS was greater than or equal to 0.4. Regarding the on-farm assessments, and, therefore, under practical conditions, no sufficient interobserver reliability (RS = -0.16 for PC1 and RS = 0.13 for PC2) was found. In terms of the test-retest reliability, only 1 comparison of 2 farm visits showed a positive correlation for PC1 (RS = 0.79) as well as for PC2 (RS = 0.64). The other 5 comparisons presented negative to weak positive correlations. However, based on video sequences, good interobserver (RS = 0.67 for PC1 and RS = 0.60 for PC2) and intraobserver (RS = 0.94 for PC1 and RS = 0.44 for PC2) reliability was achieved. Therefore, the present study revealed good reliability for the QBA in the form as it is currently included in the Welfare Quality Assessment protocol for growing pigs based on video sequences but insufficient reliability for the application on the farm.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a minimally invasive transilial vertebral (MTV) blocking procedure on the computed tomographic (CT) appearance of the lumbosacral (L7/S1) junction of dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 59 client-owned dogs with DLSS. METHODS: Lumbosacral CT images were acquired with hyperextended pelvic limbs before and after MTV in all dogs. Clinical follow-up was obtained after 1 year, including a neurologic status classified in 4 grades, and if possible, CT. Morphometric measurements (Mean ± SEM) including foraminal area, endplate distance at L7/S1 and LS angle were obtained on sets of reformatted parasagittal and sagittal CT images. RESULTS: The mean foraminal area (ForL) increased from 32.5 ± 1.7 mm2 to 59.7 ± 1.9 mm2 on the left and from 31.1 ± 1.4 mm2 to 59.1 ± 2.0 mm2 on the right (ForR) side after MTV. The mean endplate distance (EDmd) between L7/S1 increased from 3.7 ± 0.1 mm to 6.0 ± 0.1 mm, and mean lumbosacral angle (LSa) from 148.0 ± 1.1° to 170.0 ± 1.1° after MTV. CT measurements were available 1 year postoperatively in 12 cases: ForL: 41.2 ± 3.1 mm2 ; ForR: 37.9 ± 3.1 mm2 ; EDmd: 4.3 ± 0.4 mm, and LSa 157.6 ± 2.1° (values are mean and standard error of mean = SEM). All 39 dogs with long-term follow-up improved by at least 1 neurologic grade, 9/39 improving by 3 grades, 15/39 by 2 grades, and 15/39 by 1 grade. CONCLUSIONS: MTV results in clinical improvement and morphometric enlargement of the foraminal area in dogs with variable degrees of foraminal stenosis. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: MTV may be a valuable minimally invasive option for treatment of dogs with DLSS.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Intussusception is a typical abdominal emergency in early childhood. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of an infant in the typically affected age group with an intussusception triggered by a rare benign intramural intestinal adenomyoma as a pathological lead point. The infant had the typical symptoms of a recurrent idiopathic ileocolic intussusception. DISCUSSION AND EVALUATION: Idiopathic intussusception is frequent in the infant age group. Contrary to that, reports on pathological lead points for intussusceptions are sparse in the toddler age. CONCLUSIONS: That case illustrates that even in intussusceptions in the typically affected age group, it is important to be aware of pathological lead points, especially if the intussusceptions are recurrent.

ABSTRACT

The diagnostic value of interictal short time electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings in epileptic dogs under general anaesthesia with propofol and the muscle relaxant rocuronium bromide was investigated. Two activation techniques, namely photic stimulation and hyperventilation, were evaluated for their potential to enhance the diagnostic validity of these recordings. Sixty-one dogs suffering from idiopathic epilepsy and 28 dogs suffering from symptomatic epilepsy were included. Electroencephalograms were recorded using five subdermal EEG electrodes (F3, F4, Cz, O1 and O2). All 89 EEGs were analysed visually and 61 were also evaluated quantitatively with fast Fourier transformation. Interictal paroxysmal epileptiform activity was found in 25% of idiopathic and in 29% of symptomatic epileptic dogs. Quantitative analysis of the EEGs (qEEGs) detected significant differences of frequency analysis in single reading points without any continuous changes of frequency bands. A comparison between healthy and affected brain hemispheres in seven dogs with focal lesions of one hemisphere did not show any significant differences in qEEG analysis. qEEG was not more sensitive than visual evaluation. Despite the use of activation techniques, the results showed that short time EEG recordings in epileptic dogs can detect interictal epileptic activity in less than one third of all seizuring dogs and is not a useful screening method.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Long-term survival of patients who undergo surgical resection of isolated adrenal metastasis from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been reported. The aim of this study was to compare survival of patients who underwent adrenalectomy with those treated nonoperatively, and to analyze clinical characteristics associated with long-term survival. METHODS: Between January 1994 and July 2010, 37 patients with isolated adrenal metastasis from NSCLC were identified. Twenty patients underwent adrenalectomy. Patients did not undergo adrenalectomy owing to suspicion of N2 disease, medical comorbidities, or patient preference. Seven patients (35%) treated surgically had tumors that were ipsilateral to their primary tumor, and 8 (40%) had metachronous metastases. RESULTS: Five-year overall survival was 34% for patients treated operatively and 0% for patients treated nonoperatively p = 0.002). Among patients treated with adrenalectomy, patients with ipsilateral metastases had a 5-year survival of 83% compared with 0% for patients with contralateral metastases (p = 0.003). Patients without mediastinal nodal disease had a 5-year survival of 52% compared with 0% for patients with mediastinal nodal disease (p = 0.008). Survival of patients who underwent adrenalectomy for synchronous and metachronous adrenal metastases was not significantly different (p = 0.81). CONCLUSIONS: Surgical resection of isolated adrenal metastasis from lung cancer provides a survival benefit in well-selected patients compared with nonoperative management. No patient with contralateral adrenal metastases or mediastinal nodal disease survived long term after adrenalectomy. The time interval between treatment of the primary lung cancer and adrenal metastasis was not significantly associated with survival, but the cohort size was small.

INTRODUCTION: The advantage of minimally invasive electrodiagnostic methods for periodic evaluation of reinnervation at predefined time intervals does not seem to be widely recognized. In this study, using a rat model, we assessed the utility of periodic electrodiagnostic measurements for monitoring ongoing motor recovery after peripheral nerve injuries of differing severity. METHODS: In a comparative study, either unilateral sciatic nerve crush injury (n = 10), end-to-end coaptation (n = 5), or 10-mm nerve autotransplantation (n = 10) were performed. During the 6-16-week period thereafter compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) were recorded percutaneously every week in anesthetized animals. Motor nerve conduction velocity and percentage of axon loss were calculated and compared with footprint analyses (static sciatic index, SSI) and evaluations of sensory recovery. RESULTS: Our results clearly demonstrate that, although SSI measurements reliably demonstrated progress of regeneration after nerve crush injury only, differences in electrodiagnostically determined values precisely remodeled differences in axonal regeneration, which was confirmed by histomorphometric analysis of axonal regeneration. CONCLUSIONS: Percutaneous electrodiagnostic measurements enable reliable estimation of axonal regeneration parameters such as myelination and nerve fiber density and display in close proximity the actual status of axonal regeneration.

ABSTRACT

In most textbooks of embryology and pediatric surgery, the puzzling spectrum of midgut "malrotations" is explained by an "impaired" process of rotation of the midgut. However, this "process of rotation" is explained in a rather schematic way and aims more to explain pathologic findings whereas detailed embryologic investigations are still rare in this field. Good animal models which would allow the comparison of normal and abnormal midgut development are missing. In this paper we describe the development of the midgut in form of an atlas. Scanning electron microscopy is used in rat embryos to illustrate the crucial embryologic processes of midgut development. The main result shown in these illustrations is that clear signs of a process of rotation are missing.
