ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cyclin-dependent kinase 12 (CDK12)-deficient prostate cancer defines a subtype of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) with a poor prognosis. Current therapy, including PARP inhibitors, shows minimal treatment efficacy for this subtype of CRPC, and the underlying mechanism remains elusive. METHODS: Based on bioinformatics analysis, we evaluated the relationship between CDK12 deficiency and prostate cancer patient's prognosis and treatment resistance. Furthermore, we used CRISPR-Cas9 technology and mass spectrometry-based metabolomic profiling to reveal the metabolic characteristics of CDK12-deficient CRPC. To elucidate the specific mechanisms of CDK12 deficiency-mediated CRPC metabolic reprogramming, we utilized cell RNA-seq profiling and other molecular biology techniques, including cellular reactive oxygen species probes, mitochondrial function assays, ChIP-qPCR and RNA stability analyses, to clarify the role of CDK12 in regulating mitochondrial function and its contribution to ferroptosis. Finally, through in vitro drug sensitivity testing and in vivo experiments in mice, we identified the therapeutic effects of the electron transport chain (ETC) inhibitor IACS-010759 on CDK12-deficient CRPC. RESULTS: CDK12-deficient prostate cancers reprogramme cellular energy metabolism to support their aggressive progression. In particular, CDK12 deficiency enhanced the mitochondrial respiratory chain for electronic transfer and ATP synthesis to create a ferroptosis potential in CRPC cells. However, CDK12 deficiency downregulated ACSL4 expression, which counteracts the lipid oxidation stress, leading to the escape of CRPC cells from ferroptosis. Furthermore, targeting the ETC substantially inhibited the proliferation of CDK12-deficient CRPC cells in vitro and in vivo, suggesting a potential new target for the therapy of CDK12-deficient prostate cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that energy and lipid metabolism in CDK12-deficient CRPC work together to drive CRPC progression and provide a metabolic insight into the worse prognosis of CDK12-deficient prostate cancer patients. KEY POINTS: CDK12 deficiency promotes castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) progression by reprogramming cellular metabolism. CDK12 deficiency in CRPC leads to a more active mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC), ensuring efficient cell energy supply. CDK12 phosphorylates RNA Pol II to ensure the transcription of ACSL4 to regulate ferroptosis. Mitochondrial ETC inhibitors exhibit better selectivity for CDK12-deficient CRPC cells, offering a promising new therapeutic approach for this subtype of CRPC patients.

ABSTRACT

Ferroptosis has attracted much attention for tumor treatment. It has been recently identified that castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is vulnerable to ferroptosis inducers. Notably, chemodynamic therapy (CDT), triggered by metal ions, could easily induce ferroptosis via a Fenton/Fenton-like reaction, but its efficiency was highly dependent on the intracellular H2O2 concentration, posing significant changes for its clinical translation. Herein, we attached glucose oxidase (GOx) onto the surface of manganese sulfide (MnS) and developed therapeutic nanocomposites (Lpo@MnS-GOx) after encapsulating with liposome. Upon internalization by cancer cells, the released GOx could transform glucose into gluconic acid (GA) and H2O2. Notably, the generated GA stimulates the degradation of MnS, followed by the promotion of the release of H2S and Mn2+, whereas the produced H2O2 can amplify the Fenton-like response initiated by Mn2+. The enhanced CDT combined with the gas therapy effect could simultaneously promote the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and finally induce ferroptosis and exhibit an excellent anti-tumor effect. Consequently, these Lpo@MnS-GOx NPs with enhanced ferroptosis-induced effect will find great potential for CRPC cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a multifunctional nanofiber dressing that can promote antibacterial, analgesic and healing was prepared by electrospinning technology. Hydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL)/chitosan (CS)/lidocaine hydrochloride (LID) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) were used as scaffold materials and dissolved in trifluoroacetic acid to prepare spinning solution. The morphology of PCEL dressing was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The fiber structure was dense and the average diameter was 297.0 nm. The water absorption capacity test and water contact angle measurement showed that the fiber had good water absorption and hydrophilicity (1302 %, 139.258°). Drug release was 84 % within 60 h. In the results of antibacterial experiment, the dressing showed certain antibacterial properties. The results of cell experiments show that the dressing can promote cell proliferation. In addition, coagulation experiments showed that the dressing could quickly coagulate the blood within 4 min. In addition, PCEL dressing promoted collagen deposition and vascularization through animal models of pressure sores. Therefore, multifunctional dressing can be used as an ideal auxiliary means for the treatment of pressure sores, and it is a promising alternative to chronic wound healing.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: A 37-year-old man was admitted to our hospital after experiencing syncope. An MRI of his head revealed multiple foci of abnormal signal, which could potentially be metastases. The patient then underwent a 68 Ga-FAPI-04 PET/MRI examination, which revealed multiple FAPI-avid foci in the brain. Upon analyzing the cerebrospinal fluid, it was found that the patient had a Staphylococcus aureus infection. The results suggest that 68 Ga-FAPI-04 PET has the potential to be a valuable tool in the visualization of intracranial infectious lesions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: During aging, excessive ROS production in the kidneys leads to redox imbalance, which contributes to oxidative damage and impaired organ homeostasis. However, whether and how aging-related NOX4-Nrf2 redox imbalance increases susceptibility to cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury remain largely unknown. METHODS: In this study, we used cisplatin-challenged aging mouse models and senescent HK-2 cells to investigate the effects and mechanisms of aging on susceptibility to cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury. RESULTS: In vivo, we found that cisplatin stimulation caused more severe renal damage, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and mitophagy impairment in aging mice than in young mice. Moreover, Nrf2 deficiency aggravated cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury by exacerbating NOX4-Nrf2 redox imbalance and defective mitophagy. In vitro experiments on D-gal-treated human renal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2) demonstrated that senescent renal epithelial cells exhibited increased susceptibility to cisplatin-induced apoptosis, NOX4-Nrf2 redox imbalance-mediated oxidative stress and defective mitophagy. Mechanistically, we found that knockdown of Nrf2 in HK2 cells resulted in increased ROS and aggravated mitophagy impairment, whereas these effects were reversed in NOX4-knockdown cells. CONCLUSION: The present study indicates that NOX4-Nrf2 redox imbalance is critical for mitophagy deficiency in aged renal tubular epithelial cells and is a therapeutic target for alleviating cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury in elderly patients.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to develop and psychometrically test a scale by using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) comprising two types of measurement (direct and belief-based [indirect]) to assess bystander help-giving intention to victims of dating violence among youth. A two-phase, mixed-method design was adopted. The primary source of the samples was five universities, each in the northern, central, southern, eastern, and outer islands regions of Taiwan. Phase I involved developing an instrument based on the TPB (n = 10) and pilot testing (n = 220). Phase II conducted the psychometric evaluation (n = 622). The study used item analysis, explanatory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency, and cross-validation to examine the psychometric properties of the Dating Violence Bystander Help-giving Intention Questionnaire (DVBHIQ) with two types of measure (direct and belief-based). Explanatory factor analysis resulted in a four-factor solution (attitude/behavioral beliefs, subjective norms/normative beliefs, perceived behavioral control/control belief, and intention) of the direct and belief-based measures of the DVBHIQ, accounting for 72.67% and 76.62% of total variance respectively. Confirmatory factor analysis and cross-validation confirmed the proposed four-factor model and demonstrated good internal consistency reliability. The two types of DVBHIQ had good validity, reliability, and measurement invariance which may help address the core cognitive determinants for bystander help-giving intention. Healthcare providers (e.g., school nurses) could use the DVBHIQ to evaluate how bystander education programs affect youth and conduct related research in the future.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is one of the main treatment modalities for prostate cancer (PCa); however, almost all patients treated with ADT eventually progress into castration-resistant PCa (CRPC). Although second-generation androgen receptor (AR) antagonists, such as enzalutamide, have been approved for CRPC treatment, AR signaling in CRPC cells is reactivated through multiple mechanisms, resulting in resistance to treatment and tumor progression with a very poor prognosis. The present study aimed to explore the anticancer effect of a treatment combining AR antagonist enzalutamide with AR degrader IU1 on PCa cells. METHODS: The joint effects of enzalutamide and IU1 on PCa cell proliferation and apoptosis and associated cell signaling were evaluated in vitro. Mechanistically, the ubiquitination level and half-life of AR were examined under the combination treatment. The binding of IU1 and enzalutamide to AR was further verified using cellular thermal shift analysis and isothermal dose-response curve fingerprinting. RESULTS: The combination of IU1 and three AR antagonists showed synergistic effects in different prostate cell lines. IU1 and enzalutamide synergistically promoted the degradation of AR and AR-V7 proteins, as well as suppressed the expression levels of AR and AR-V7 downstream target genes at the transcriptional and protein levels. The combination also synergistically blocked the PCa cell cycle and promoted apoptosis in PCa cell lines. Mechanistically, the combination promoted increased levels of AR ubiquitination. In CRPC cell lines and in the presence of increased androgen concentrations, enzalutamide was still able to bind AR competitively with androgens, reducing the stability of AR and thus promoting the degradation effect of IU1 on AR, synergistically producing an inhibitory effect on PCa cells. CONCLUSION: Taken together, our findings suggest that the combination of AR degrader and enzalutamide potentially represents a new therapeutic strategy for CRPC.

OBJECTIVE: Acetaminophen (APAP) is one of the world's popular and safe painkillers, and overdose can cause severe liver damage and even acute liver failure. The effect and mechanism of the xanthohumol on acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity remains unclear. METHODS: The hepatoprotective effects of xanthohumol were studied using APAP-induced HepG2 cells and acute liver injury of mouse, seperately. RESULTS: In vitro, xanthohumol inhibited H2O2- and acetaminophen-induced cytotoxicity and oxidative stress. Xanthohumol up-regulated the expression of Nrf2. Further mechanistic studies showed that xanthohumol triggered Nrf2 activation via the AMPK/Akt/GSK3ß pathway to exert a cytoprotective effect. In vivo, xanthohumol significantly ameliorated acetaminophen-induced mortality, the elevation of ALT and AST, GSH depletion, MDA formation and histopathological changes. Xanthohumol effectively suppressed the phosphorylation and mitochondrial translocation of JNK, mitochondrial translocation of Bax, the activation o cytochrome c, AIF secretion and Caspase-3. In vivo, xanthohumol increased Nrf2 nuclear transcription and AMPK, Akt and GSK3ß phosphorylation in vivo. In addition, whether xanthohumol protected against acetaminophen-induced liver injury in Nrf2 knockout mice has not been illustated. CONCLUSION: Thus, xanthohumol exerted a hepatoprotective effect by inhibiting oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction through the AMPK/Akt/GSK3ß/Nrf2 antioxidant pathway.

Long-acting antipsychotic injections require that psychiatric nurses choose the proper injection site and technique to avoid harming patients. This research conducted a mixed-method study to examine the long-acting injectable antipsychotic (LAI) knowledge, practice, and administrative barriers in a sample of 269 psychiatric nurses from 3 public psychiatric hospitals in Taiwan. Self-report questionnaires showed female nurses exhibiting higher scores and older nurses demonstrating more knowledge. The dorsogluteal (DG) site was the most widely used for injections, with 57.6% of nurses using the Z-track method. Qualitative data analysis was performed on 20 psychiatric nurses who chose the DG site as their preferred injection site. There were two key themes. The first was a gap between the nurses' knowledge of LAI administration and their actual practice. The second needed more confidence and training in using the ventrogluteal injection site. These results highlight the need for continued education and training to improve LAI practice among psychiatric nurses.

ABSTRACT

To investigate a safe and effective approach for enhancing the in vivo expression of recombinant genes and improving the systemic immunity of animals against infectious diseases, we employed the interleukin-7 (IL-7) gene from Tibetan pigs to construct a recombinant eukaryotic plasmid (VRTPIL-7). We first examined VRTPIL-7's bioactivity on porcine lymphocytes in vitro and then encapsulated it with polyethylenimine (PEI), chitosan copolymer (CS), PEG-modified galactosylated chitosan (CS-PEG-GAL) and methoxy poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and PEI-modified CS (CS-PEG-PEI) nanoparticles using the ionotropic gelation technique. Next, we intramuscularly or intraperitoneally injected mice with various nanoparticles containing VRTPIL-7 to evaluate their immunoregulatory effects in vivo. We observed a significant increase in neutralizing antibodies and specific IgG levels in response to the rabies vaccine in the treated mice compared to the controls. Treated mice also exhibited increased leukocytes, CD8+ and CD4+ T lymphocytes, and elevated mRNA levels of toll-like receptors (TLR1/4/6/9), IL-1, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-7, IL-23, and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß). Notably, the recombinant IL-7 gene encapsulated in CS-PEG-PEI induced the highest levels of immunoglobulins, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, TLRs, and cytokines in the mice's blood, suggesting that chitosan-PEG-PEI may be a promising carrier for in vivo IL-7 gene expression and enhanced innate and adaptive immunity for the prevention of animal diseases.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the correlations and identify the relationships between the resilience, perception of illness and body image of women with breast cancer in the 5-year-or-above survivorship. METHODS: We used convenient sampling to recruit from an outpatient department 106 women with breast cancer. The inclusion criteria were participants aged >20 years currently in a stable condition and were able to understand the Chinese language. Those women with mental health illness were excluded. All participants completed questionnaires on the following: demographic information, revision of illness perception (IPQ-R), body image scale (BIS), Eysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ), and resilience scale (RS). We conducted the structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore the factor structure. RESULTS: SEM results showed a good fit to the data (comparative fit index = 0.97, Tucker-Lewis index = 0.94). Findings F indicated the existence of significant relationships between resilience and either illness perception or body image. Personality had a direct association with illness perception (ß = 0.73, P < 0.05). Body image had an indirect effect on the relationship between resilience and illness perception (coefficient = -2.52; 95% bootstrapping CI = -31.36, -0.62). CONCLUSIONS: Results indicated that illness perception is a crucial predictor for better resilience as mediated through body image. To provide adequate information to women with breast cancer can improve their perception of breast cancer more positively. Hence, their body image and their way of coping with survival life turn better.

ABSTRACT

Indigenous communities usually have poorer access to long-term care services than non-indigenous communities because of their remote locations and unique cultural backgrounds. However, there was little exploration into the experience of indigenous people's access to the official long-term care services in Taiwan-the gap this study aimed to fill. A qualitative study design using semi-structured interviews was used to obtain data from a purposive sample. Fourteen participants who were disabled and lived among the indigenous communities of the Bunun tribes in central Taiwan were interviewed individually. The data were analyzed using Graneheim and Lundman's qualitative content analysis. The theme-"helpful but still difficult and unfit"-and three categories with eight subcategories emerged. While official long-term care services provided by the government can benefit people with disabilities in indigenous tribes, their use of such services faces a number of obstacles, which points to the need for considering culturally appropriate care. To protect the rights and interests of indigenous tribal communities, long-term care policies and practical planning must be adopted, cultural differences at play must be respected and recognized, and the necessary support must be offered to eliminate inequalities in healthcare.

To explore the influence of thermal activation and particle size on cementitious activity of bauxite tailings, in this study, the raw bauxite tailings were classified into coarse bauxite tailings (CBT) and fine bauxite tailings (FBT) by a powder separator, and then the effect of activation temperature on cementitious activity of CBT and FBT was investigated. XRD, TG, and FTIR were used to study the phase and structure changes of CBT and FBT during the process of thermal activation. The results show that the main mineral phases of CBT and FBT, diaspore and kaolinite, begin to remove a large amount of hydroxyl groups at 500 ℃ and convert into corundum and metakaolin, respectively. The diaspore and kaolinite have completely removed the hydroxyl groups at 600 °C and 700 °C, respectively. With the increase of activation temperature, the particle size of CBT and FBT are first gradually decreased, when the activation temperature exceeds 700 ℃, as the activation temperature continues to arise, the particle size of CBT and FBT are gradually increased due to the occurrence of sintering. The activity index of bauxite tailings is increased with the increase of fineness, and the optimum activation temperature of CBT and FBT is 700 °C. When the activation temperature is the same, FBT has higher pozzolanic activity than CBT.

Norovirus is a major cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, and no vaccine is currently available. The genetic and antigenic diversity of Norovirus presents challenges for providing broad immune protection, which calls for a multivalent vaccine application. In this study, we investigated the possibility of developing a virus-like particle (VLP)-based 6-valent Norovirus vaccine candidate (Hexa-VLPs) that covers GI.1, GII.2, GII.3, GII.4, GII.6, and GII.17 genotypes. Hexa-VLPs (30 µg) adjuvanted with 500 µg of aluminum hydroxide (alum) were selected as the optimal immunization dose after a dose-escalation study. Potent and long-lasting blockade antibody responses were induced by 2-or 3-shot Hexa-VLPs, especially for the emerging GII.P16-GII.2 and GII.17 (Kawasaki 2014) genotypes. Hexa-VLPs plus alum elicited Th1/Th2 mixed yet Th2-skewed immune responses, characterized by an IgG1-biased subclass profile and significant IL-4+ T-cell activation. Notably, simultaneous immunization with a mixture of six VLPs revealed no immunological interference among the component antigens. These results demonstrate that Hexa-VLPs are promising broad-spectrum vaccines to provide immunoprotection against major GI/GII epidemic strains in the future.

Non-adherence to medication among patients with schizophrenia is an important clinical issue with very complex reasons. Since medication administration is an essential nursing responsibility, improving strategies for patient medication compliance must be fully understood. This study aimed to explore the strategies mental health nurses (MHNs) implement in clinically improving patients with schizophrenia and to describe the nurses' tacit knowledge of application strategies. A qualitative study with purposeful sampling was used. Twenty-five experienced MHNs in a psychiatric hospital in central Taiwan were given an in-depth interview. The texts were content-analyzed using NVivo 12 Pro software. MHNs promote medication adherence among patients with schizophrenia using the following strategies: establishing a conversational relationship, overall assessment of non-adherence to medication, understanding the disease and adjusting the concept of medication, incorporating interpersonal connection feedback, and building supportive resources. This study explored the strategies of MHNs that incorporated knowledge in managing treatment adherence in patients with schizophrenia. The findings add knowledge to clinical nursing practice about medication adherence among patients with schizophrenia.

Two novel luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Zn3(TCA)2(BPB)2]n (DZU-101, where H3TCA = 4,4',4''-tricarboxyltriphenylamine and BPB = 1,4-bis(pyrid-4-yl)benzene) and [Zn3(TCA)2(BPB)DMA]n (DZU-102), based on the same ligands and metal ions were synthesized by regulating the amount of water in the solvothermal reaction system. Structural analyses show that the two MOFs have pillar-layered frameworks with Zn3 clusters connected by the TCA3- and BPB ligands. Interestingly, DZU-102 possessed a two-fold interpenetrated framework distinct from the individual network of DZU-101. As a result, DZU-102 showed a visual fluorescence color change from chartreuse to azure in m-xylene, while the fluorescence color was turquoise in p-/o-xylene with no change. Furthermore, compared with p/o-xylene, the fluorescence emission peak of DZU-102 in m-xylene suspension produced an obvious blue shift. Moreover, selective fluorescence sensing experiments were also carried out, which demonstrated that the degree of peak shift was related to the concentration of m-xylene, indicating the potential application of DZU-102 in fluorescence sensing of m-xylene from xylene isomers and further revealed the application of structural interpenetration for luminescence tuning of MOFs.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To explore the experiences of nurses working in emergency departments in selecting and triaging patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: Descriptive phenomenology was applied in this study. METHODS: Data were collected from nurses working at hospitals in Indonesia using snowball sampling and telephone interviews. A total of 10 emergency nurses participated, and Colaizzi's method of data analysis was applied. FINDINGS: Six themes and 10 subthemes emerged. The main themes were "extreme challenges in triage," "feeling of responsibility under uncontrolled spread and infection," "physical and psychological exhaustion," "discovering strategies under difficult circumstances," "looking for positive reinforcement," and "optimism in togetherness." Nurses had to deal with the challenge of COVID-19 in the ED triage, interestingly so, the nurses they have shown the development of professional responsibility. Nurses are also experienced in finding patient selection and triage strategies and the sense of optimism that may influence strategy and practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: This findings identify nurses' experiences in dealing with the extreme challenges of emergency department triage as well as their associated strategies and optimism. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Providing support to emergency nurses, improving emergency department triage, and community empowerment are suggested as strategies to improve nursing care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has generated negative effects on psychological well-being worldwide, including in schoolchildren. Government requirements to stay at home and avoid social and school settings may impact psychological well-being by modifying various behaviors such as problematic phone and Internet use, yet there is a paucity of research on this issue. This study examined whether the COVID-19 outbreak may have impacted problematic smartphone use (PSU), problematic gaming (PG), and psychological distress, specifically the pattern of relationships between PSU, PG, and psychological distress in schoolchildren. METHODS: Longitudinal data on psychological distress, PSU, and PG were collected from 575 children in primary schools in 3 waves: Waves 1 and 2 were conducted before the COVID-19 outbreak and Wave 3 during the outbreak. Cross-lagged panel models were used to examine relationships between factors across the 3 waves. RESULTS: Cross-lagged models found that higher levels of PSU were not significantly related prospectively to greater psychological distress before the COVID-19 outbreak, but this prospective relationship became significant during the COVID-19 outbreak. Whereas PG was associated prospectively with psychological distress before the COVID-19 outbreak (ie, between Waves 1 and 2), this association became nonsignificant during the COVID-19 lockdown (ie, between Waves 2 and 3). CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 outbreak has seemed to change prospective relationships between PSU and psychological distress and PG and psychological distress in schoolchildren. Future research should examine whether restrictions on or information provided to schoolchildren may exacerbate PSUs effects on psychological distress.

ABSTRACT

Fear of novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) may result in psychological health problems among different populations. Moreover, believing COVID-19 information and preventive COVID-19 infection behaviors are relevant constructs associated with fear of COVID-19. Therefore, the present study validated three instruments assessing fear, beliefs, and preventive behaviors related to COVID-19 among individuals with mental illness. Moreover, relationships between the three constructs were examined. Individuals with mental illness (N = 400; 178 females; mean age = 46.91 years) completed the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S), Believing COVID-19 Information Scale (BCIS), Preventive COVID-19 Infection Behaviors Scale (PCIBS), and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). The FCV-19S, BCIS, and PCIBS demonstrated a single-factor structure with satisfactory fit indices. Moreover, believing COVID-19 information positively and significantly associated with fear of COVID-19, and fear of COVID-19 negatively and significantly associated with preventive behaviors and positively and significantly associated with psychological distress. The FCV-19S, BCIS, and PCIBS may assist healthcare providers in assessing COVID-19-related information among individuals with mental illness. Consequently, relevant programs may be designed to help individuals with mental illness going through the period of crisis.

ABSTRACT

The aims of this study were to examine gender differences in how parent-child discussions on sex issues, peer interactions around sexual issues, and exposure to sexually explicit materials affect the intention to engage in casual sex among adolescents and young adults in Taiwan. This cross-sectional survey study recruited 767 participants (348 men and 419 women) aged 15-24 years. The survey collected data on participants' intention to engage in casual sex, their attitude toward and perception of casual sex based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) (favorable attitude, perceiving positive social norms toward casual sex, and perceived control over involvement), parent-child and peer discussions about sexual issues, and exposure to sexually explicit materials. The results of multiple regression analysis revealed that parent-child discussions on sex issues, peer interactions around sexual issues, and exposure to sexually explicit materials were significantly associated with the intention to engage in casual sex. The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) further supported that favorable attitude, perceiving positive social norms toward casual sex, and control over involvement mediated the associations. For men, decreased favorable attitude mediated the negative association between parent-child discussions and casual sex intention; increased favorable attitudes and decreased control over involvement mediated the positive associations between peer interactions and casual sex intention. For women, decreased control over involvement mediated the positive association between exposure to sexually explicit materials and casual sex intention. The associations between peer interaction and subjective norms of acceptance, perceived control over involvement, and casual sex intention were stronger in men than in women; the association of favorable attitudes with casual sex intention was also stronger in men than in women.
