ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To compare the diagnostic performance and image quality of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) with electron density (ED) image reconstruction with those of DECT with standard CT (SC) and virtual non-calcium (VNCa) image reconstructions, for diagnosing lumbar disc herniation (L-HIVD). METHODS: A total of 59 patients (354 intervertebral discs from T12/L1 to L5/S1; mean age, 60 years; 30 women and 29 men) who underwent DECT with spectral reconstruction and 3-T MRI within 2 weeks were enrolled between March 2021 and February 2022. Four radiologists independently assessed three image sets of randomized ED, SC, and VNCa images to detect L-HIVD at 8-week intervals. The coefficient of variance (CV) and the Weber contrast of the ROIs in the normal and diseased disc to cerebrospinal fluid space (NCR-normal/-diseased, respectively) were calculated to compare the image qualities of the noiseless ED and other series. RESULTS: Overall, 129 L-HIVDs were noted on MRI. In the detection of L-HIVD, ED showed a higher AUC and sensitivity than SC and VNCa; 0.871 vs 0.807 vs 833 (p = 0.002) and 81% vs 70% vs 74% (p = 0.006 for SC), respectively. CV was much lower in all measurements of ED than those for SC and VNCa (p < 0.001). Furthermore, NCR-normal and NCR-diseased were the highest in ED (ED vs SC in NCR-normal and NCR-diseased, p = 0.001 and p = 0.004, respectively; ED vs VNCa in NCR-diseased, p = 0.044). CONCLUSION: Compared to SC and VNCa images, DECT with ED reconstruction can enhance the AUC and sensitivity of L-HIVD detection with a lower CV and higher NCR. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: To our knowledge, this is the first study to quantify the image quality of noiseless ED images. ED imaging may be helpful for detecting L-HIVD in patients who cannot undergo MRI. KEY POINTS: ED images have diagnostic potential, but relevant quantitative analyses of image quality are limited. ED images detect disc herniation, with a better coefficient of variance and normalized contrast ratio values. ED images could detect L-HIVD when MRI is not an option.

ABSTRACT

Metschnikowia persimmonesis, a novel endophytic yeast strain isolated from Diospyros kaki calyx, possesses strong antimicrobial activity. We investigated its potential use as an environmentally safe food biocontrol agent through genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics. Secondary metabolites were isolated from M. persimmonesis, followed by chemical structure elucidation, PUL gene cluster identification, and RNA sequencing. Pulcherrimin was isolated using 2 M NaOH, its structure was confirmed, and the yield was quantified. Biocontrol efficacy of M. persimmonesis on persimmon fruits and calyx was evaluated by assessing lesion diameter and disease incidence. Following compounds were isolated from M. persimmonesis co-culture with Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum: fusaric acid, benzoic acid, benzeneacetic acid, 4-hydroxybenzeneacetic acid, 4-(-2-hydoxyethyl)-benzoic acid, cyclo (Leu-Leu), benzenemethanol, 4-hydroxy-benzaldehide, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzoic acid, 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid, lumichrome, heptadecanoic acid, and nonadecanoic acid. Exposing M. persimmonesis to different growth media conditions (with or without sugar) resulted in the isolation of five compounds: Tyrosol, Cyclo (Pro-Val), cyclo(L-Pro-L-Tyr), cyclo(Leu-Leu), and cyclo(l-tyrosilylicine). Differentially expressed gene analysis revealed 3264 genes that were significantly expressed (fold change ≥2 and p-value ≤0.05) during M. persimmonesis growth in different media, of which only 270 (8.27%) showed altered expression in all sample combinations with Luria-Bertani Agar as control. Minimal media with ferric ions and tween-80 triggered the most gene expression changes, with the highest levels of PUL gene expression and pulcherrimin yield (262.166 mg/L) among all media treatments. M. persimmonesis also produced a higher amount of pulcherrimin (209.733 mg/L) than Metschnikowia pulcherrima (152.8 mg/L). M. persimmonesis inhibited the growth of Fusarium oxysporum in persimmon fruit and calyx. Toxicity evaluation of M. persimmonesis extracts showed no harmful effects on the liver and mitochondria of zebrafish, and no potential risk of cardiotoxicity in hERG-HEK293 cell lines. Thus, M. persimmonesis can be commercialized as a potent and safe biocontrol agent for preserving food products.

ABSTRACT

The synovium may be affected by a wide spectrum of disorders, including inflammatory, infectious, degenerative, traumatic, hemorrhagic, and tumorous conditions. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a valuable imaging modality to characterize synovial disorders. Most abnormal lesions appear as areas of nonspecific high signal intensity on T2-weighted images (T2-WI) due to high water content or increased perfusion. However, T2 hypointensity can be attributed to blood components of varying ages, calcification, inorganic crystals, fibrosis, caseous necrosis and/or amyloid deposition. Hypointense lesions on T2-WI are infrequent and additional clinical and imaging characteristics can help to limit the list of differential diagnoses, which may include tenosynovial giant cell tumor, synovial chondromatosis, rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculous arthritis, chronic tophaceous gout, amyloid arthropathy, synovial hemangioma, lipoma arborescens and hemosiderotic synovitis. Recently, susceptibility weighted imaging has been developed and may contribute to more accurate diagnosis for deoxygenated blood and calcium. We review the MRI features of hypointense synovial lesions on MRI and emphasize the characteristic findings that suggest a correct diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that metabolize sugars to obtain energy and produce a large amount of lactate through the process are well known for their benefits. However, they can be used on a large scale only when good storage stability is guaranteed. The vitality and stability of several LAB strains were effectively protected in this investigation by L-theanine at 1% of the appropriate concentration (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum MG5023, Enterococcus faecium MG5232, Lactococcus lactis MG4668, Streptococcus thermophilus MG5140, and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis MG741). The inclusion of L-theanine as a protective agent significantly enhanced the viability of all strains throughout the freeze-drying process compared to that of the non-coated probiotics. The efficacy of L-theanine in improving bacterial stability and survivability was evaluated using accelerated stability tests, gastrointestinal (GI) tract survivability tests, and adhesion assays with intestinal epithelial cells. The cell surface was covered with substances including L-theanine, according to morphological findings, providing efficient defense against a variety of external stresses. Therefore, by exerting anti-freezing and anti-thawing properties, the adoption of L-theanine as a new and efficient protective agent may improve the stability and viability of a variety of probiotics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading system is the most widely used method to classify the severity of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. However, due to ambiguity of terminology, the KL system showed inferior inter- and intra-observer reliability. For a more reliable evaluation, we recently developed novel deep learning (DL) software known as MediAI-OA to extract each radiographic feature of knee OA and to grade OA severity based on the KL system. METHODS: This research used data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative for training and validation of MediAI-OA. 44,193 radiographs and 810 radiographs were set as the training data and used as validation data, respectively. This AI model was developed to automatically quantify the degree of joint space narrowing (JSN) of medial and lateral tibiofemoral joint, to automatically detect osteophytes in four regions (medial distal femur, lateral distal femur, medial proximal tibia and lateral proximal tibia) of the knee joint, to classify the KL grade, and present the results of these three OA features together. The model was tested by using 400 test datasets, and the results were compared to the ground truth. The accuracy of the JSN quantification and osteophyte detection was evaluated. The KL grade classification performance was evaluated by precision, recall, F1 score, accuracy, and Cohen's kappa coefficient. In addition, we defined KL grade 2 or higher as clinically significant OA, and accuracy of OA diagnosis were obtained. RESULTS: The mean squared error of JSN rate quantification was 0.067 and average osteophyte detection accuracy of the MediAI-OA was 0.84. The accuracy of KL grading was 0.83, and the kappa coefficient between the AI model and ground truth was 0.768, which demonstrated substantial consistency. The OA diagnosis accuracy of this software was 0.92. CONCLUSIONS: The novel DL software known as MediAI-OA demonstrated satisfactory performance comparable to that of experienced orthopedic surgeons and radiologists for analyzing features of knee OA, KL grading and OA diagnosis. Therefore, reliable KL grading can be performed and the burden of the radiologist can be reduced by using MediAI-OA.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to develop a screening model for rotator cuff tear detection in all three planes of routine shoulder MRI using a deep neural network. A total of 794 shoulder MRI scans (374 men and 420 women; aged 59 ± 11 years) were utilized. Three musculoskeletal radiologists labeled the rotator cuff tear. The YOLO v8 rotator cuff tear detection model was then trained; training was performed with all imaging planes simultaneously and with axial, coronal, and sagittal images separately. The performances of the models were evaluated and compared using receiver operating curves and the area under the curve (AUC). The AUC was the highest when using all imaging planes (0.94; p < 0.05). Among a single imaging plane, the axial plane showed the best performance (AUC: 0.71), followed by the sagittal (AUC: 0.70) and coronal (AUC: 0.68) imaging planes. The sensitivity and accuracy were also the highest in the model with all-plane training (0.98 and 0.96, respectively). Thus, deep-learning-based automatic rotator cuff tear detection can be useful for detecting torn areas in various regions of the rotator cuff in all three imaging planes.

ABSTRACT

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by immune dysregulation. Meanwhile, the supernatant of lactic acid bacteria (SL) was recently reported to have anti-inflammatory effects. In addition, HaCaT keratinocytes stimulated by tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) are widely used for studying AD-like responses. In this study, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of SL from lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced HaCaT keratinocytes, and then we investigated the strains' probiotic properties. SL was noncytotoxic and regulated chemokines (macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC) and thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC)) and cytokines (interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-25, and IL-33) in TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced HaCaT keratinocytes. SL from Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus MG4644, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei MG4693, and Lactococcus lactis MG5474 decreased the phosphorylation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Furthermore, the safety of the three strains was demonstrated via hemolysis, bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity, and toxicity tests, and the stability was confirmed under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Therefore, L. rhamnosus MG4644, L. paracasei MG4693, and Lc. lactis MG5474 have potential applications in functional food as they are stable and safe for intestinal epithelial cells and could improve atopic inflammation.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to assess the feasibility and performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) model for detecting three common wrist fractures: distal radius, ulnar styloid process, and scaphoid. The AI model was trained with a dataset of 4432 images containing both fractured and non-fractured wrist images. In total, 593 subjects were included in the clinical test. Two human experts independently diagnosed and labeled the fracture sites using bounding boxes to build the ground truth. Two novice radiologists also performed the same task, both with and without model assistance. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and area under the curve (AUC) were calculated for each wrist location. The AUC for detecting distal radius, ulnar styloid, and scaphoid fractures per wrist were 0.903 (95% C.I. 0.887-0.918), 0.925 (95% C.I. 0.911-0.939), and 0.808 (95% C.I. 0.748-0.967), respectively. When assisted by the AI model, the scaphoid fracture AUC of the two novice radiologists significantly increased from 0.75 (95% C.I. 0.66-0.83) to 0.85 (95% C.I. 0.77-0.93) and from 0.71 (95% C.I. 0.62-0.80) to 0.80 (95% C.I. 0.71-0.88), respectively. Overall, the developed AI model was found to be reliable for detecting wrist fractures, particularly for scaphoid fractures, which are commonly missed.

ABSTRACT

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease and the leading cause of liver-related deaths worldwide. It has been established that microorganisms are involved in the interaction between the intestinal lumen and the liver; therefore, studies on probiotics as potential candidates are increasing. This study evaluated the effects of Limosilactobacillus fermentum MG4294 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum MG5289 on NAFLD. The MG4294 and MG5289 reduced lipid accumulation in FFA-induced HepG2 by suppressing the adipogenic proteins through the regulation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). The administration of these strains in the HFD-induced mice model lowered body weight, serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and cholesterol levels. In particular, MG4294 and MG5289 restored liver TG and TC to normal levels by lowering lipid and cholesterol-related proteins via the modulation of AMPK in the liver tissue. In addition, the administration of MG4294 and MG5289 reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1ß-, and IL6) in the intestinal tissues of the HFD-induced mouse model. In conclusion, MG4294 and MG5289 can be presented as probiotics with the potential to prevent NAFLD.

ABSTRACT

Bcl-2-associated anthanogene (BAG) family proteins regulate plant defense against biotic and abiotic stresses; however, the function and precise mechanism of action of each individual BAG protein are not yet clear. In this study, we investigated the biochemical and molecular functions of the Arabidopsis thaliana BAG2 (AtBAG2) protein, and elucidated its physiological role under stress conditions using mutant plants and transgenic yeast strains. The T-DNA insertion atbag2 mutant plants were highly susceptible to heat shock, whereas transgenic yeast strains ectopically expressing AtBAG2 exhibited outstanding thermotolerance. Moreover, a biochemical analysis of GST-fused recombinant proteins produced in bacteria revealed that AtBAG2 exhibits molecular chaperone activity, which could be attributed to its BAG domain. The relevance of the molecular chaperone function of AtBAG2 to the cellular heat stress response was confirmed using yeast transformants, and the experimental results showed that overexpression of the AtBAG2 sequence encoding only the BAG domain was sufficient to impart thermotolerance. Overall, these results suggest that the BAG domain-dependent molecular chaperone activity of AtBAG2 is indispensable for the heat stress response of Arabidopsis. This is the first report demonstrating the role of AtBAG2 as a sole molecular chaperone in Arabidopsis.

This study evaluates the immune-enhancing effects of Limosilactobacillus fermentum on cyclophosphamide (CP)-induced immunosuppression in BALB/c mice. In vitro, the expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines and MAPK signaling molecules in Raw264.7 cells were analyzed by ELISA and Western blot analysis. Moreover, cell proliferation, surface receptor expression, and cytotoxicity of NK-92 cells were examined by Cell Counting Kit-8, CytoTox96 assay, and flow cytometry, respectively. To investigate the immune-enhancing effects of selected L. fermentum strains in vivo, these strains were orally administered to BALB/c mice for 2 weeks, and CP was intraperitoneally injected. Then, liver, spleen, and whole blood were isolated from each animal. Administration of single L. fermentum strains or their mixture sustained the spleen weight, the counts of white blood cells compared to non-fed group. Splenocyte proliferation and NK cytotoxicity were significantly increased in all L. fermentum-fed groups. The frequency of B220+ cells was also significantly enhanced in splenocytes isolated from L. fermentum groups. In addition, the production of cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ) and antibodies was recovered in splenocyte supernatants isolated from L. fermentum groups. In conclusion, L. fermentum could be a suitable functional food additive for immune-enhancing effect.

ABSTRACT

Ultraviolet (UV) B exposure induces wrinkle formation, collagen fiber breakdown, and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). UVB irradiation induces the expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), activator protein 1 (AP-1), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), which affect the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP). We confirmed the effects of Latilactobacillus sakei wikim0066 (wikim0066) on UVB-irradiated Hs68 cells and HR-1 hairless mice cells. wikim0066 restored the production of type I procollagen by regulating the expression of MMP-1 and -3, MAPK, AP-1, and NF-κB in UVB-irradiated Hs68 cells and HR-1 mice. Oral administration of wikim0066 alleviates wrinkle formation, epidermal thickness, and TEWL in UVB-irradiated HR-1 hairless mice. These results indicated that wikim0066 has the potential to prevent UVB-induced wrinkle formation.

ABSTRACT

Effects of culture supernatants of Lactobacillus reuteri MG5346 (CS-MG5346) on receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis were examined. CS-MG5346 treatment up to 400 µg/mL significantly reduced tartrate-resistant acid-phosphatase (TRAP) activity, the phenotype biomarker of osteoclast, without affecting cell viability. CS-MG5346 inhibited the expression of osteoclast specific transcriptional factors (c-fos and nuclear factor-activated T cells c1) and their target genes (TRAP, cathepsin, and matrix metallo-proteinase-9) in a dose-dependent manner (p<0.05). The administration of L. reuteri MG5346 (2×108 CFU/day) for 8 wks significantly improved furcation involvement, but no difference was observed in alveolar bone loss in ligature-induced experimental periodontitis rats. The elevated RANKL/ osteoprotegerin ratio, the biomarker of periodontitis, was significantly lowered in the gingival tissue by administration of L. reuteri MG5346 (p<0.05). L. reuteri MG5346 showed excellent stability in simulated stomach and intestinal fluids and did not have antibiotic resistance. Based on the results, L. reuteri MG5346 has the potential to be a promising probiotic strain for oral health.

ABSTRACT

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common disease in women of childbearing age and is caused by the growth of abnormal microbiota in the vagina. Probiotic consumption can be an effective alternative treatment to preserve or improve vaginal health. In the present study, MED-01, a complex of five strains of probiotic candidates isolated from the vagina of Korean women, was used. This study was designed as a 12-week, randomized, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of MED-01 on vaginal health. A total of 101 reproductive-aged women with a Nugent score of 4-6 took MED-01 (5.0 × 109 CFU) or a placebo once a day, and 76 participants completed the procedure. MED-01 significantly reduced the Nugent score compared with the placebo. Quantitative PCR analysis confirmed that Lactobacillus plantarum was significantly increased in the vagina, whereas harmful bacteria such as Mobiluncus spp., Gardnerella vaginalis, and Atopobium vaginae were suppressed after 12 weeks of MED-01 ingestion. No adverse events to the test food supplements were observed in the participants. These results confirmed that MED-01 can be used as a probiotic for treating BV, as it improves the vaginal microbiota.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the correlation of aponeurotic expansion of the supraspinatus tendon (AESST) with shoulder pathologies such as long head of biceps tendon (LHB), supraspinatus tendon (SST), and subscapularis tendon (SSc). METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 47 healthy patients and 163 patients with shoulder symptoms from August 2014 to March 2021. First, the presence of AESST was evaluated based on Moser et al.'s classification. Second, the presence of abnormal findings of including LHB tendinitis, LHB subluxation, SST tendinitis, SST tear, SSc tendinitis, and SSc tendon tear was evaluated. We analyzed the prevalence and type of AESST between the two study groups and the relationship between abnormal findings and the presence of AESST. RESULTS: The prevalence of AESST for readers 1 and 2 was 26.1% and 30.4% in the asymptomatic group, respectively, and 22.8% and 31.3% in the symptomatic group. Type 1 was most common (17.3-23.9%) followed by types 2a and 2b. There were no significant differences in the distribution of aponeurosis type between the two groups. In the AESST-positive groups, 45.9% and 47.1% had SST tears on examination by readers 1 and 2, respectively, whereas only 26.4% and 27.9% had SST tears in the AESST-negative group suggesting AESST is associated with SST tear. The odds ratio for SST tear in the presence of AESST was 2.370 and 2.294 (readers 1 and 2). CONCLUSIONS: There is an association between SST tears and the presence of AESST. KEY POINTS: • We evaluated the prevalence of aponeurotic expansion of the supraspinatus tendon (AESST) on MR imaging by type in both symptomatic and asymptomatic groups. • We investigated the correlation of AESST with shoulder pathologies such as biceps tendon and supraspinatus tendon tears. • There is an association between SST tears and the presence of AESST. • Radiologists should be aware of the risk of rotator cuff pathology if AESST is detected.

ABSTRACT

Allergic inflammation refers to a hyperimmune reaction that causes hypersensitivity responses such as hives, itchiness, runny nose, and cough due to specific allergens. Allergic diseases are known to be influenced by the diversity and distribution of intestinal microbiota, and Lactobacill is known to relieve allergic symptoms by modulating cytokines secreted by T helper type 1 (Th1)/Th2 cells. This study was designed to investigate the effects of Lactobacillus gasseri MG4247 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei MG4272, MG4577, and MG4657 on levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and proteins associated with allergic symptoms in RAW 264.7 macrophages, and RBL-2H3 mast cells, as well as their probiotic properties. MG4247, MG4272, and MG4577 significantly reduced tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin (IL)-6 levels in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages, and markedly decreased IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 levels and STAT6 phosphorylation in DNP-IgE/HSA sensitized RBL-2H3 mast cells. Furthermore, MG4247, MG4272, and MG4577 tolerated the acidic condition with pepsin and basic condition with bile salt, and showed a high adhesion rate (≥ 73.9%). In safety evaluation, MG4247, MG4272, and MG4577 showed no hemolytic or bile salt hydrolase activity and no cytotoxicity to HT-29 cells (≥ 96.7%). Hence, MG4272, MG4272, and MG4577 can be used as candidate probiotic strains to relieve cytokines associated with allergic inflammation.

ABSTRACT

Gellan gum (GG) is an anionic polysaccharide used as an additive in the food industry. However, the effect of GG on gut microbiota regulation and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not yet been investigated. In vitro fermentation experiments have demonstrated that GG promoted the growth of probiotic strains such as Lactiplantibacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, producing metabolites beneficial to gut health. In mice, GG reduced hepatic triglyceride content, serum biomarkers, and body fat mass and weight gain induced by a high fat diet. Additionally, GG regulated the gut microbiota including Desulfovibrionales, Deferribacterales, Bacteroidales, and Lactobacillales at the order level and also promoted short-chain fatty acid production. Moreover, GG improved the expression of proteins related to hepatic inflammation and lipid metabolism. Taken together, GG ameliorated NAFLD, possibly by acting on the gut-liver axis via improving the gut health, indicating its potential as a food supplement and/or prebiotic against NAFLD.

BACKGROUND: There are not many studies on the differences of ultrasound (US) findings between epidermal cysts (ECs) located in the trunk and those in the extremities. PURPOSE: To compare the sonographic findings of ECs according to location in the body (trunk vs. extremity) and evaluated the feasibility of strain elastography (SE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 76 patients with surgically confirmed non-ruptured EC who underwent US including SE. The US analyses included size, shape, ratio of depth to length (DLR), involvement of more than half the dermis, "submarine sign," and SE characters of each lesion. SE findings were assigned into four grades based on elasticity. RESULTS: The submarine sign was more significantly observed in ECs located in the trunk versus extremities (P value = 0.004 and 0.035, respectively). Truncal lesions were significantly more likely to possess an ovoid shape (P < 0.05) and exhibited higher DLR (P < 0.05). There were more cases with low elasticity according to SE (grade 3 or 4) compared to high elasticity (grade 1 or 2). However, we did not observe significant differences between the two locations (P > 0.05). More-than-half signs also did not exhibit a significant difference (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The submarine sign, ovoid shape, and tall lesions (higher DLR) are common in the trunk. However, the degree of elasticity and number of more-than-half signs did not differ between the two groups.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure causes a breakdown of collagen, oxidative stress, and inflammation. UVB activates mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), activator protein-1 (AP-1), and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In this study, we evaluated 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radical scavenging activity and the photoprotective effect of lactic acid bacteria LAB strains, including Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Streptococcus genera in UVB-exposed skin fibroblasts. Nine LAB strains displayed antioxidant activity by regulating superoxide dismutase in UVB-exposed skin fibroblasts. Four LAB strains (MG4684, MG5368, MG4511, and MG5140) recovered type I procollagen level by inhibiting MMPs, MAPK, and AP-1 protein expression. Additionally, these four strains reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines by inhibiting oxidative stress. Therefore, L. fermentum MG4684, MG5368, L. rhamnosus MG4511, and S. thermophilus MG5140 are potentially photoprotective.
