ABSTRACT

Maternal exposure to various metallic and non-metallic elements has been linked to the occurrence of orofacial clefts (OFCs), yet there remains a dearth of comprehensive research on the potential ramifications of simultaneous exposure to multiple elements. In this study, we investigated the individual and combined effects of element exposure on OFCs in a cohort of 168 pregnant women (49 cases and 119 controls) in the Shanxi province of northern China from 2010 to 2015. Cord serum samples were obtained from all participants to analyze the levels of 32 elements using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The study examined the independent correlation between element concentrations and OFCs using two machine screening models, Boruta and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was utilized to determine the combined effects of key exposure elements on OFCs and to clarify the interaction between exposed elements through the generalized additive model (GAM). The screening models identified lead (Pb), tin (Sn), iron (Fe), and cesium (Cs) as the most significant risk factors for OFC development in offspring. In the BKMR model, the probability of OFCs increased with higher overall levels of these risk elements, with Pb emerging as the primary contributor to the combined effect of the mixture. The findings of the GAM indicated that the combined exposure to Pb and Sn had a synergistic effect on the risk of developing OFCs. Analysis of elemental exposure in umbilical cord serum suggested that Pb exposure may have detrimental effects on OFC development in offspring, which may be further intensified by a synergistic interaction between Sn and Pb in the occurrence of OFCs.

ABSTRACT

Phthalate metabolites and bisphenols can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, there is no study to evaluate the associations of prenatal exposure to phthalate metabolites and bisphenols with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P) risk in offspring. A population-based case-control study was conducted in a multicenter setting from 2005 to 2021, enrolling 448 pregnant women. Seven phthalate metabolites and six bisphenols were quantified in placenta using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. In the logistic regression analysis, high levels of mono-ethyl phthalate, mono-cyclohexyl phthalate, mono-octyl phthalate, bisphenol A, bisphenol AF, bisphenol AP, and fluorene-9-bisphenol were associated with increased NSCL/P risk with odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 1.86(1.07,3.25), 6.56(3.47,12.39), 8.49(4.44,16.24), 8.34(4.32,16.08), 3.19(1.81,5.62), 2.78(1.59,4.86), and 5.16(2.82,9.44). The Bayesian kernel machine regression model revealed that co-exposure to phthalate metabolites and bisphenols was associated with increased NSCL/P risk. Similarly, quantile-based g-computation analysis indicated that each quantile increase in mixture concentration was positively related to higher risk for NSCL/P [odds ratio (95% confidence interval) = 2.98(1.97,4.51)]. This study provides novel evidence that prenatal single and co-exposure to phthalate metabolites and bisphenols were associated with increased NSCL/P risk, suggesting that exposure to phthalate metabolites and bisphenols during pregnancy should be minimized to reduce the incidence of NSCL/P in offspring.

ABSTRACT

Human exposure to organotin is common but little is known about the adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to explore the association between organotin exposure and the risk of non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) and to explore the underlying mechanism. Placental samples (109 NSCL/P cases and 128 controls) were analyzed for 8 organotin concentrations, and subsequent animal experiments were conducted by administering tributyltin (TBT) during critical developmental periods. DNA methylation BeadChip analysis (12 NSCL/P and 12 controls), bisulfite Sequencing analysis (3 NSCL/P and 3 controls mice), and RNA sequencing were performed to explore epigenetic mechanisms. Logistic regression, LASSO regression, support vector machine, random forest, and mediation effect analysis were utilized to identify key genes related to TBT and NSCL/P. Only tributyltin met the detection criteria for further analysis among 8 compounds. The median levels of TBT in cases (8.93 ng/g) were statistically significantly higher than those in controls (5.33 ng/g). Excessive TBT exposure in maternal placenta was associated with an increased risk of NSCL/P (OR = 6.44, 95 % CI, 2.91-14.25) in humans, showing a dose-response relationship (p for trend <0.05). 288 differentially methylated CpG sites in 129 genes were identified between cases and controls. Tributyltin was associated with FGFR2 and SCD hypomethylation, which were identified as potential key genes associated with NSCL/P. Mediation analysis suggested that DNA methylation of FGFR2 and SCD may mediate the impact of TBT on NSCL/P occurrence. TBT exposure during the critical period in mice (GD8.5-GD15.5) can induce progeny NSCL/P. Altered FGFR2 and SCD hypomethylation and gene expression observed in response to TBT exposure in fetal mice. Excessive TBT exposure was associated with increased risks of human NSCL/P. TBT exposure can induce NSCL/P in fetal mice. FGFR2 and SCD were implicated in NSCL/P pathogenesis, potentially mediated by DNA methylation alterations.

ABSTRACT

Goosecoid (GSC), translated from a homeobox gene, is a protein that participates in metastasis of various cancers. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) is one of the deadliest malignancies associated with a poor diagnosis and prognosis. To develop new treatment target or biomarker for PAAD, this study intended to assess the effects and the molecular mechanism of GSC on PAAD metastasis. The expressive discrepancy of GSC in PAAD and normal tissues/cells was compared by both the quantitative PCR and western blot. The effects of GSC silencing and GSC over-expression on PAAD cells and TGF-ß signaling were proved by wound-healing assay, cell counting kit-8, Transwell assay and western blot. From the results, GSC mRNA and protein levels were enriched in PAAD cancer tissues and cells. GSC silencing prohibited metastasis of PAAD cells including the ability to invade, migrate and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), whereas GSC upregulation stimulated these cells behaviors above. GSC silencing reversed the effects on cellular processes induced by activation of the TGF-ß pathway. Furthermore, silencing of GSC postponed tumor growth in xenograft model. In summary, GSC was abundantly expressed in PAAD, which activated the TGF-ß pathway to enhance cell metastasis and tumor development.

ABSTRACT

Systems theory and complex science, especially knowledge of social-ecological interdependencies, are urgently needed in planning and decision-making on sustainable urban development due to the intensification of the contradiction between human development and nature conservation. Here, we present an analytical framework, the "social-ecological coupling trajectory", that integrates the social-ecological coupling, multi-stability, causal feedbacks and sustainable management through understanding the evolution of the urban social-ecological system (SES). This framework is applied to a typical urban SES, i.e., China's rapidly prosperous Pearl River Delta (PRD). Our results indicate that the SES evolution in the PRD is a phased process, which is accompanied by a continuous decline in major ecosystem services (ESs) and the disproportionate decline of ecological management performance. Further analysis shows that social and economic policies have a decisive role in driving the evolution of SES and the cumulative effect of sustained human interference is directly linked to the disproportionate increase in sustainability challenges. The findings of critical slowing down and evolution patterns of SES in the PRD may provide evidence for the threshold recognition and regime shift prediction in SES. In sum, this study expands the theoretical framework and empirical knowledge of SES evolution and provides a pathway for sustainable development of regions seeking prosperity from the social-ecological coupling perspective.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Numerous studies have established the role of inflammation in osteoarthritis (OA) progression, yet limited research explores the association between systemic inflammatory indicators and pre-diagnosis OA risk. This study aimed to investigate the association between peripheral inflammatory indicators and the risk of OA using data from the UK Biobank. Methods: The study analyzed data from 417,507 participants in the UK Biobank, including neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, monocyte count, platelet count, and C-reactive protein meter. Additionally, derived ratios such as NLR(neutrophils-lymphocytes ratio), PLR(Platelets-lymphocytes ratio), SII(systemic immune-inflammation index), and LMR (lymphocytes-monocytes ratio) were examined. Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spline models were used to assess both linear and nonlinear associations. Results: Over a mean follow-up period of 12.7 years, a total of 49,509 OA events were identified. The findings revealed that CRP (HR:1.06, 95%CI:1.05-1.07), NLR (HR:1.02, 95%CI:1.01-1.03), PLR (HR:1.02, 95%CI:1.01-1.03), and SII (HR:1.03, 95%CI:1.01-1.04) were associated with an increased risk of OA, while LMR (HR:0.97, 95%CI:0.96-0.99) showed a significant negative correlation with OA risk. Subgroup analyses further emphasized that these associations were significant across most of the population. Although neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and platelets showed a nominal association with the risk of OA, the results were unreliable, especially for specific joint OA. Conclusion: The study provides evidence of a significant association between elevated peripheral inflammatory indicators and OA risk. These findings underscore the importance of low-grade chronic inflammation in OA development. The potential clinical utility of these indicators as early predictors of OA is suggested, warranting further exploration.

ABSTRACT

The effect on catalytic behavior induced by different morphology of NiO supports has been investigated using the example of gold-catalyzed CO oxidation. Three NiO-supported nanogold consisting of nanogold deposited onto NiO nanorods (NiO-R), nanosheet (NiO-S), and nanodiscs (NiO-D) were prepared. Transmission electron microscopy(TEM)/Scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) investigations indicated that Au particles dominantly exposed Au(111) facets virtually independent of NiO architectures. Au/NiO-S displayed a normal Arrhenius-type behavior. Au/NiO-R and Au/NiO-D showed an atypical behavior, characterized by a U-shaped curve of activity vs. temperature, which is attributed to the carbonate accumulation on whose catalytically active sites. On Au/NiO-R, a stable CO-conversion rate of 1.78 molCO gAu -1 h-1 at 30°C was achieved, which is among the higher rates reported so far for supported Au-based systems. DRIFTS measurement identified Auδ+ species as crucial CO adsorption sites promoting CO oxidation, and the catalytic CO oxidation should obey Mars-van Krevelen (<200°C) and Eley-Rideal mechanism (>240°C).

BACKGROUND: The Da Vinci robot-assisted surgery technique has been widely used in laparoscopic mesangectomy for rectal cancer. However, the short-term efficacy of these procedures compared to traditional laparoscopic surgery remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the short- and medium-term efficacy of Da Vinci robot and laparoscopic surgery in total mesangectomy (TME) for rectal cancer, so as to provide guidance and reference for clinical practice. AIM: To investigate the safety and long-term efficacy of robotic and laparoscopic total mesorectal resection for the treatment of rectal cancer. METHODS: The clinicopathologic data of 240 patients who underwent TME for rectal cancer in the Anorectal Department of People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region from August 2018 to March 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 112 patients underwent laparoscopic TME (L-TME) group, and 128 patients underwent robotic TME (R-TME) group. The intraoperative, postoperative, and follow-up conditions of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: The conversion rate of the L-TME group was greater than that of the R-TME group (5.4% vs 0.8%, χ 2 = 4.417, P = 0.036). The complication rate of the L-TME group was greater than that of the R-TME group (32.1% vs 17.2%, χ 2 = 7.290, P = 0.007). The percentage of positive annular margins in the L-TME group was greater than that in the R-TME group (7.1% vs 1.6%, χ 2 = 4.658, P = 0.031). The 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate and overall survival (OS) rate of the L-TME group were lower than those of the R-TME group (74.1% vs 85.2%, χ 2 = 4.962, P = 0.026; 81.3% vs 91.4%, χ 2 = 5.494, P = 0.019); in patients with American Joint Committee on Cancer stage III DFS rate and OS rate in the L-TME group were significantly lower than those in the R-TME group (52.5% vs 76.1%, χ 2 = 5.799, P = 0.016; 65.0% vs 84.8%, χ 2 = 4.787, P = 0.029). CONCLUSION: Compared with the L-TME group, the R-TME group had a better tumor prognosis and was more favorable for patients with rectal cancer, especially for patients with stage III rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Conventional daytime monitoring in a single day may be influenced by factors such as motion artifacts and emotions, and continuous monitoring of nighttime heart rate variability (HRV) and respiration to assist in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) diagnosis has not been reported yet. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore and compare the effects of continuously monitored HRV, heart rate (HR), and respiration during night sleep on the remote diagnosis of COPD. METHODS: We recruited patients with different severities of COPD and healthy controls between January 2021 and November 2022. Vital signs such as HRV, HR, and respiration were recorded using noncontact bed sensors from 10 PM to 8 AM of the following day, and the recordings of each patient lasted for at least 30 days. We obtained statistical means of HRV, HR, and respiration over time periods of 7, 14, and 30 days by continuous monitoring. Additionally, the effects that the statistical means of HRV, HR, and respiration had on COPD diagnosis were evaluated at different times of recordings. RESULTS: In this study, 146 individuals were enrolled: 37 patients with COPD in the case group and 109 participants in the control group. The median number of continuous night-sleep monitoring days per person was 56.5 (IQR 32.0-113.0) days. Using the features regarding the statistical means of HRV, HR, and respiration over 1, 7, 14, and 30 days, binary logistic regression classification of COPD yielded an accuracy, Youden index, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.958, 0.904, and 0.989, respectively. The classification performance for COPD diagnosis was directionally proportional to the monitoring duration of vital signs at night. The importance of the features for diagnosis was determined by the statistical means of respiration, HRV, and HR, which followed the order of respiration > HRV > HR. Specifically, the statistical means of the duration of respiration rate faster than 21 times/min (RRF), high frequency band power of 0.15-0.40 Hz (HF), and respiration rate (RR) were identified as the top 3 most significant features for classification, corresponding to cutoff values of 0.1 minute, 1316.3 nU, and 16.3 times/min, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous monitoring of nocturnal vital signs has significant potential for the remote diagnosis of COPD. As the duration of night-sleep monitoring increased from 1 to 30 days, the statistical means of HRV, HR, and respiration showed a better reflection of an individual's health condition compared to monitoring the vital signs in a single day or night, and better was the classification performance for COPD diagnosis. Further, the statistical means of RRF, HF, and RR are crucial features for diagnosing COPD, demonstrating the importance of monitoring HRV and respiration during night sleep.

ABSTRACT

Superconductivity (SC) was experimentally observed for the first time in antimony polyhydride. The diamond anvil cell combined with a laser heating system was used to synthesize the antimony polyhydride sample at high pressure and high temperature. In-situ high pressure transport measurements as a function of temperature with an applied magnetic field were performed to study the SC properties. It was found that the antimony polyhydride samples show superconducting transition with critical temperature T c 116 K at 184 GPa. The investigation of SC at magnetic field revealed the superconducting coherent length of ∼40 Å based on the Ginzburg Landau (GL) equation. Antimony polyhydride superconductor has the second highest T c in addition to sulfur hydride among the polyhydrides of elements from main groups IIIA to VIIA in the periodic table.

ABSTRACT

With the intensification of human activities, the amount of phosphorus (P)-containing waste has increased. When such waste is not recycled, P is released into the environment, leading to environmental issues such as the eutrophication of water bodies. In this study, based on the material flow analysis method, a P Waste Flow analysis model (P-WFA) was developed to analyze the P flow in the waste system of Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. To address the research gap in long-term P flow analysis at the watershed scale, this study quantified the P content in the waste system of the Poyang Lake Watershed from 1950 to 2020. The analysis revealed that from 1950 to 2020, the total P input into the waste system increased from 5.49 × 104 tons in 1950 to 2.28 × 105 tons in 2020. The breeding industry system was identified as the primary source, accounting for 25.19-41.59 % of the total waste system. Over the past 70 years, P loss to surface water from waste systems has been primarily facilitated by manure from the breeding industry, as well as drainage from crop farming systems (77.74 % in 2020). At the same time, the P recycling rate (PRR) of the waste system exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease, increasing from 44.14 % to 47.75 % before dropping to 44.41 %. Population growth, urbanization, and changes in consumption levels in Jiangxi Province have led to changes in the dietary structure and fertilizer use, consequently affecting the P cycling pattern. This study presents a comprehensive P flow model for waste systems in the Poyang Lake Watershed. This model can be used as a reference to enhance P cycling and manage P loss in other large freshwater lakes.

Infant birth sizes are vital clinical parameters to predict poor growth and micronutrient deficiency in early life. However, their effects on childhood anemia remain unclear. We aimed to explore the associations between birth weight, crown-heel length, and head circumference with anemia in early childhood, as well as potential modification factors. This population-based prospective cohort study included 204,556 participants with singleton live births delivered at gestational ages of 28-42 weeks. A logistic regression model was used to estimate the associations of the measures of infant birth size and their Z-score with anemia under five years old. There were 26,802 (13.10%) children under five years old who were diagnosed has having anemia. Compared with children who did not have anemia, children who had anemia had a lower birth weight and smaller head circumference and a longer crown-heel length (all p-values < 0.05). After adjusting for confounders, not only birth weight (ß coefficient, -0.008; 95% CI, -0.011--0.004; p < 0.001) and head circumference (ß coefficient, -0.004; 95% CI, -0.007--0.001; p = 0.009), but also the related Z-scores were negatively associated with childhood anemia, while the trends for crown-heel length were the opposite. We further found significant interactions of folic acid use and maternal occupation with infant birth sizes. In conclusion, infants having abnormal sizes at birth are significantly associated with the risk for childhood anemia, which can be modified by folic acid use during pregnancy and maternal occupation.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a widely-used brominated flame retardant, has been revealed to exert endocrine disrupting effects and induce adipogenesis. Given the high structural similarities of TBBPA analogues and their increasing exposure risks, their effects on lipid metabolism are necessary to be explored. Herein, 9 representative TBBPA analogues were screened for their interference on 3T3-L1 preadipocyte adipogenesis, differentiation of C3H10T1/2 mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to brown adipocytes, and lipid accumulation of HepG2 cells. TBBPA bis(2-hydroxyethyl ether) (TBBPA-BHEE), TBBPA mono(2-hydroxyethyl ether) (TBBPA-MHEE), TBBPA bis(glycidyl ether) (TBBPA-BGE), and TBBPA mono(glycidyl ether) (TBBPA-MGE) were found to induce adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes to different extends, as evidenced by the upregulated intracellular lipid generation and expressions of adipogenesis-related biomarkers. TBBPA-BHEE exhibited a stronger obesogenic effect than did TBBPA. In contrast, the test chemicals had a weak impact on the differentiation process of C3H10T1/2 MSCs to brown adipocytes. As for hepatic lipid formation test, only TBBPA mono(allyl ether) (TBBPA-MAE) was found to significantly promote triglyceride (TG) accumulation in HepG2 cells, and the effective exposure concentration of the chemical under oleic acid (OA) co-exposure was lower than that without OA co-exposure. Collectively, TBBPA analogues may perturb lipid metabolism in multiple tissues, which varies with the test tissues. The findings highlight the potential health risks of this kind of emerging chemicals in inducing obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other lipid metabolism disorders, especially under the conditions in conjunction with high-fat diets.

ABSTRACT

Fatigue crack is one of the main failure modes of pressure vessels. Online monitoring and predicting methods of crack growth play an important role in the operation of important pressure vessel. The SH0 wave is non-dispersive, and it is not disturbed by internal media of pressure vessel and very sensitive to cracks, therefore it is suitable for fatigue crack growth monitoring. Moreover, fatigue crack growth in industry is affected by material properties, loads, which usually shows some uncertainty. And the particle filter (PF) is well suited to deal with prediction problems affected by uncertainty. Hence, the prediction method of crack growth based on SH0 wave monitoring and PF is proposed (short for SH0-PF). The basic theory of crack monitoring method using SH0 wave is introduced, and the signal feature extraction using the damage index is studied. The state equation characterizing the fatigue crack growth is established by Paris model, and the observation equation is established based on the normalized correlation moment damage index according to monitoring signal using SH0 wave. The prediction reliability of the fatigue crack growth applying SH0-PF is verified by experiment with the single edge notched specimen. The experimental results indicate that the prediction accuracy of SH0-PF is better than that of the traditional Paris model.

ABSTRACT

Human exposure to chromium (Cr) is common but little is known about its adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to explore the association between Cr exposure and the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) and the underlying mechanisms of Cr-induced NTDs. 593 controls and 408 NTD cases with placentas were included in this study. Chromium trichloride (Cr(III)) and potassium dichromate (Cr(VI)) were intragastrically administered to pregnant mice and the number of NTDs was recorded. The odds ratio for total NTDs in the highest exposure group in placenta was 4.18 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.97-8.84). The incidence of fetal NTDs in mice administered with Cr(III) showed a dose-response relationship. Cr(VI) didn't show teratogenicity of NTDs whereas increased the stillbirth rate. Prenatal exposure to Cr(III) increased levels of oxidative stress and apoptosis in fetal mice. RNA-sequencing results indicated significant enrichment of the MAPK pathway. RT-qPCR and Western blot analysis revealed that Cr(III) induced increased expression of p-JNK, p-P38, and Casp3. Toxicological effects can be partly antagonized by antioxidant supplementation. High chromium exposure was associated with increased human NTD risks. Excessive Cr(III) exposure can induce NTDs in fetal mice by increasing apoptosis through upgrading oxidative stress and then activating JNK/P38 MAPK signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

Electrocatalytic conversion of nitrates and carbon dioxide to urea under ambient conditions shows promise as a potential substitute for traditional urea synthesis processes characterized by high consumption and pollution. In this study, a straightforward one-pot method is employed to prepare a highly efficient FeNC-Fe1N4 electrocatalyst, consisting of atomically dispersed Fe1N4 sites and metallic Fe clusters (FeNC) with particle size of 4-7 nm. The FeNC-Fe1N4 catalyst exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity for urea synthesis from nitrate anion (NO3 -) and carbon dioxide (CO2), achieving a urea production rate of 38.2 mmol gcat -1 h-1 at -0.9 V (vs RHE) and a Faradaic efficiency of 66.5% at -0.6 V (vs RHE). Both experimental and theoretical results conclusively demonstrate that metallic Fe clusters and Fe1N4 species provide active sites for the adsorption and activation of NO3 - and CO2, respectively, and the synergistic effect between Fe1N4 and metallic Fe clusters significantly enhances the electrochemical efficiency of urea synthesis. In all, this work contributes to the rational design and comprehensive synthesis of a dual-active site iron-based electrocatalyst, facilitating efficient and sustainable urea synthesis.

ABSTRACT

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an important group of organic toxic pollutants. Parent PAHs (pPAHs) are mainly metabolized into mono-hydroxylated PAHs (OH-PAHs) after entering the human body. Until now, it is still an urgent need to select appropriate exposure biomarkers for PAHs and analyze them at the trace level. Based on gas chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry, we have developed a versatile analytical method for the systemic analysis of pPAHs and OH-PAHs in routinely collected biological samples. This method was further applied to analyze plasma, hair and urine samples from 24 rats exposed to 13 pPAH congeners at four levels. The detection rate for pPAHs in three types of samples was 100%, except for dibenz(a,h)anthracene (DahA) in plasma, while the detection rate for OH-PAHs ranged from 25% to 100%. A significant linear relationship was observed between pPAH exposure levels and their corresponding OH-PAH levels in three different types of samples. It was found that each unit increase in pPAH exposure level was associated with an increase in OH-PAHs ranging from 0.03% (0.01-0.05%) to 5.27% (1.74-8.81%). Furthermore, significant positive correlations were found between any two types of samples for most OH-PAHs, but not observed for most pPAHs. The correlation patterns of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OH-PYR) across three types of samples differed from other congeners. Strong correlations were identified between five types of hydroxyphenanthrene (OH-PHE) and pPAH exposure levels. In conclusion, OH-PAHs were more sensitive exposure biomarkers than pPAHs, particularly in hair and urine samples.

What is already known about this topic?: The level of molybdenum (Mo) in a mother's urine has been linked to the growth rate of the fetus and the blood pressure levels in children. What is added by this report?: We evaluated the variations in maternal plasma Mo concentrations throughout pregnancy and their potential association with the risk of spontaneous preterm birth (SPB). What are the implications for public health practice?: Future research must determine the Mo levels in pregnant women across various regions in China. Moreover, particular attention needs to be given to the potential increase in Mo concentration throughout pregnancy and its possible adverse impacts on the health of both the mother and the fetus.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the alterations in retinochoroidal parameters measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) in patients with carotid artery stenosis (CAS) and assess their associations with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) data. METHOD: This study enrolled patients diagnosed with CAS and age-matched healthy controls. Both groups underwent OCT and OCTA examinations. DSA and assessment of carotid artery stenosis were performed only in the CAS group. The study evaluated various retinochoroidal parameters from OCT and OCTA, including linear vessel density (LVD), foveal avascular zone (FAZ), choroidal thickness (ChT), and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. DSA-derived measures included cervical segment (C1) diameter, cavernous segment (C4) diameter, stenosis percentage, ophthalmic artery (OA) filling time, C1-OA filling time, and residual stenosis. RESULTS: A total of 42 eyes from 30 CAS patients and 60 eyes from 30 healthy controls were included. Patients with CAS displayed significantly decreased LVD compared to controls (p < 0.001). Additionally, the CAS group had thinner choroid and RNFL (p = 0.047 and p < 0.001, respectively). Macular LVD negatively correlated with both stenosis percentage and C1-OA filling time (p = 0.010 and p = 0.014, respectively). In patients who underwent carotid artery stenting, preoperative ChT significantly correlated with residual stenosis (Pearson r = -0.480, p = 0.020). CONCLUSION: OCT and OCTA provide a quantitative assessment of retinochoroidal microstructural changes associated with CAS, suggesting potential for noninvasive evaluation of the disease. This might contribute to the prevention of irreversible ocular complications and early detection of CAS. Furthermore, ChT may not only aid in diagnosing CAS more reliably but also offer prognostic information.
