ABSTRACT

Numerous applications require low humidity sensors that not only sensitive but also stable, small hysteresis, high resolution and fast response. However, most reported low humidity sensors cannot possess these properties at the same time. In this work, inspired by sea urchin, we developed an ionic liquid (IL) modified metal organic framework (UiO-66) based low humidity sensor. Owing to the synergistic effect of the hydrophilicity and ionic conductivity of IL and the steric hindrance effects of UiO-66, the optimized low humidity sensor simultaneously exhibits high response (47.5), small hysteresis (0.3 % RH), ultrafast response speed (0.2 s), high resolution (1 % RH), and excellent long-term stability (>120 days). In particular, the sensor has been proved to have potential applications in visual humidity detection and water source location. This work provides a preliminary design principle that will contribute to the preparation of high-performance low humidity sensing materials.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To examine the association of Life's Essential 8 (LE8) with the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events among patients with CHD. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 11,997 patients with CHD from the UK Biobank. The LE8 score was generated using five lifestyle factors (diet, body mass index, physical activity, smoking, and sleep) and three biological factors (blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure). LE8 score ranged from 0 to 100 and was categorized into quartiles. Cox proportional hazards regression models were applied to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% CI (confidence interval). RESULTS: During a median follow up of 12.5 years, we documented 3366 recurrent cardiovascular events, 1068 myocardial infarction, 1829 heart failure events, 703 strokes, and 934 cardiovascular deaths. The multivariable-adjusted HR (95% CI) for the highest versus the lowest quartile of LE8 score was 0.57 (0.50, 0.65) for recurrent cardiovascular events, 0.66 (0.52, 0.83) for myocardial infarction, 0.54 (0.45, 0.67) for heart failure, 0.50 (0.36, 0.68) for stroke, and 0.46 (0.37, 0.56) for cardiovascular death. Furthermore, the population attributable fraction of the lowest to the highest quartile of LE8 score were ranged from 16.2% to 32.5% for the various cardiovascular outcomes. In addition, biomarkers including renal function and inflammation collectively explained 47.6%-87.7% of the associations between the lifestyle factors and recurrent cardiovascular events. CONCLUSIONS: Better cardiovascular health as measured by LE8 was associated with significantly lower risk of recurrent cardiovascular events among patients with CHD. Clinicians should prioritize educating patients with CHD on the importance of optimal cardiovascular health for secondary prevention. In addition, our findings indicated significant mediation effect of biomarkers involving of glycemic control, renal function, liver function, lipid profile, and systemic inflammation on the associations between overall lifestyle factors and recurrent cardiovascular events.

ABSTRACT

Chronic pancreatitis is usually accompanied by pancreatic duct stenosis and pancreatic duct stones (1). Pancreatic duct stent implantation can effectively drain pancreatic fluid and relieve symptoms. However, in many cases this is not easy, because of the presence of stones or the pancreatic duct is too narrow, the guide wire may not be able to enter the distal pancreatic duct. We present a case of chronic pancreatitis with pancreatic duct stenosis in which we assisted the passage of guidewires through the pancreatic duct stenosis by means of pancreatic duct occupation.

ABSTRACT

Numerous host factors, in addition to human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2), have been identified as coreceptors of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), demonstrating broad viral tropism and diversified druggable potential. We and others have found that antihistamine drugs, particularly histamine receptor H1 (HRH1) antagonists, potently inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this study, we provided compelling evidence that HRH1 acts as an alternative receptor for SARS-CoV-2 by directly binding to the viral spike protein. HRH1 also synergistically enhanced hACE2-dependent viral entry by interacting with hACE2. Antihistamine drugs effectively prevent viral infection by competitively binding to HRH1, thereby disrupting the interaction between the spike protein and its receptor. Multiple inhibition assays revealed that antihistamine drugs broadly inhibited the infection of various SARS-CoV-2 mutants with an average IC50 of 2.4 µM. The prophylactic function of these drugs was further confirmed by authentic SARS-CoV-2 infection assays and humanized mouse challenge experiments, demonstrating the therapeutic potential of antihistamine drugs for combating coronavirus disease 19.IMPORTANCEIn addition to human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can utilize alternative cofactors to facilitate viral entry. In this study, we discovered that histamine receptor H1 (HRH1) not only functions as an independent receptor for SARS-CoV-2 but also synergistically enhances ACE2-dependent viral entry by directly interacting with ACE2. Further studies have demonstrated that HRH1 facilitates the entry of SARS-CoV-2 by directly binding to the N-terminal domain of the spike protein. Conversely, antihistamine drugs, primarily HRH1 antagonists, can competitively bind to HRH1 and thereby prevent viral entry. These findings revealed that the administration of repurposable antihistamine drugs could be a therapeutic intervention to combat coronavirus disease 19.

ABSTRACT

Enhancing infrared images is essential for detecting wind turbine blades using infrared technology. This paper introduces an Infrared Image Enhancement Method based on Adaptive Iterative Cutoff Threshold Difference Multi-Scale Top-Hat Transformation (AICT-DMTH) to address the challenge of low image clarity in infrared detection. The method involves performing a black-white difference top-hat transformation by utilizing structural elements of varying scales for dilation and erosion. Additionally, an iterative threshold method is applied to extract more detailed image features, followed by setting a cutoff constant to determine the final scale of the structural element. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively, with infrared images from laboratory and wind farm settings enhanced and compared against existing methods. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method significantly improves the clarity of infrared images, demonstrating robustness in enhancing images from various environments.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Superselective adrenal arterial embolization (SAAE) is a potential alternative treatment for patients with unilateral primary aldosteronism (PA) who refuse unilateral adrenalectomy. Therefore, we aimed to establish a scoring model to differentiate between hypertensive remission after SAAE. METHODS: This prospective cohort study involved 240 patients who underwent SAAE for unilateral PA. Patients were randomly divided into a model training set and a validation set at a ratio of 7:3. The clinical outcome was a response to hypertension remission, defined as complete, partial, or absent success at 6 months after SAAE. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify independent parameters and develop a nomogram to predict clinical outcomes after SAAE. The discrimination, calibration efficacy, and clinical utility of the predictive model were assessed. RESULTS: Five independent predictors were identified: female sex, duration of hypertension, defined daily dose of antihypertensive medication, diabetes, and target organ damage. The above five independent predictors were put into a predictive model that was presented as a nomogram. Using bootstrapping for internal validation, the C-statistic for the predictive model was 0.866 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.834 to 0.898). In the validation cohort, the area under the curve (AUC) of the nomogram for predicting hypertension remission after SAAE was 0.809. CONCLUSION: The present model is the first nomogram-based score that specifically predicts hypertension remission after SAAE in patients with unilateral PA using conventional parameters. This is an effective risk stratification tool that can be used by clinicians for timely and tailored preoperative risk discussions.

ABSTRACT

Polyamines are ubiquitous in almost all biological entities and involved in various crucial physiological processes. They are also closely associated with the onset and progression of many diseases. Polyaminopathies are a group of rare genetic disorders caused by alterations in the function of proteins within the polyamine metabolism network. Although the identified polyaminopathies are all rare diseases at present, they are genetically heritable, rendering high risks not only to the carriers but also to their descendants. Meanwhile, more polyaminopathic patients might be discovered with the increasing accessibility of gene sequencing. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the structural variations of mutated proteins in current polyaminopathies, in addition to their causative genes, types of mutations, clinical symptoms, and therapeutic approaches. We focus on analyzing how alterations in protein structure lead to protein dysfunction, thereby facilitating the onset of diseases. We hope this review will offer valuable insights and references for the future clinical diagnosis and precision treatment of polyaminopathies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The role of Th17 cells in prostate cancer (PCa) is not fully understood. The transcription factor BATF controls the differentiation of Th17 cells. Mice deficient in Batf do not produce Th17 cells. METHODS: In this study, we aimed to characterize the role of Batf-dependent Th17 cells in PCa by crossbreeding Batf knockout (Batf-/-) mice with mice conditionally mutant for Pten. We found that Batf-/- mice had changes in the morphology of prostate epithelial cells compared to normal mice, and Batf-/- mice deficient in Pten (named Batf-) had smaller prostate size and developed fewer invasive prostate adenocarcinomas than Pten-deficient mice with Batf expression (named Batf+). The prostate tumors in Batf- mice showed reduced proliferation, increased apoptosis, decreased angiogenesis and inflammatory cell infiltration, and activation of NF-κB signaling. Moreover, Batf- mice showed significantly reduced IL-23/IL-23R signaling. In the prostate stroma of Batf- mice, IL-23R-positive cells were decreased considerably compared to Batf+ mice. Splenocytes and prostate tissues from Batf- mice cultured under Th17 differentiation conditions expressed reduced IL-23/IL-23R than cultured cells from Batf+ mice. Anti-IL23p19 antibody treatment of Pten-deficient mice reduced prostate tumors and angiogenesis compared to control IgG-treated mice. In human prostate tumors, BATF mRNA level was positively correlated with IL23A and IL-23R but not RORC. CONCLUSION: Our novel findings underscore the crucial role of IL-23/IL23R signaling in mediating the function of Batf-dependent Th17 cells, thereby promoting PCa initiation and progression. This highlights the Batf-IL-23R axis as a promising target for the development of innovative strategies for PCa prevention and treatment.

ABSTRACT

Salt-sensitive hypertension is common among individuals with essential hypertension, and the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has increased. However, data from early identification of the risk of developing LVH in young adults with salt-sensitive hypertension are lacking. Thus, the present study aimed to design a nomogram for predicting the risk of developing LVH in young adults with salt-sensitive hypertension. A retrospective analysis of 580 patients with salt-sensitive hypertension was conducted. The training set consisted of 70% (n = 406) of the patients, while the validation set consisted of the remaining 30% (n = 174). Based on multivariate analysis of the training set, predictors for LVH were extracted to develop a nomogram. Discrimination curves, calibration curves, and clinical utility were employed to assess the predictive performance of the nomogram. The final simplified nomogram model included age, sex, office systolic blood pressure, duration of hypertension, abdominal obesity, triglyceride-glucose index, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). In the training set, the model demonstrated moderate discrimination, as indicated by an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.863 (95% confidence interval: 0.831-0.894). The calibration curve exhibited good agreement between the predicted and actual probabilities of LVH in the training set. Additionally, the validation set further confirmed the reliability of the prediction nomogram. In conclusions, the simplified nomogram, which consists of seven routine clinical variables, has shown good performance and clinical utility in identifying young adults with salt-sensitive hypertension who are at high risk of LVH at an early stage.

Geriatric diseases are a group of diseases with unique characteristics related to senility. With the rising trend of global aging, senile diseases now mainly include endocrine, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, skeletal, and muscular diseases and cancer. Compared with younger populations, the structure and function of various cells, tissues and organs in the body of the elderly undergo a decline as they age, rendering them more susceptible to external factors and diseases, leading to serious tissue damage. Tissue damage presents a significant obstacle to the overall health and well-being of older adults, exerting a profound impact on their quality of life. Moreover, this phenomenon places an immense burden on families, society, and the healthcare system.In recent years, stem cell-derived exosomes have become a hot topic in tissue repair research. The combination of these exosomes with biomaterials allows for the preservation of their biological activity, leading to a significant improvement in their therapeutic efficacy. Among the numerous biomaterial options available, hydrogels stand out as promising candidates for loading exosomes, owing to their exceptional properties. Due to the lack of a comprehensive review on the subject matter, this review comprehensively summarizes the application and progress of combining stem cell-derived exosomes and hydrogels in promoting tissue damage repair in geriatric diseases. In addition, the challenges encountered in the field and potential prospects are presented for future advancements.

ABSTRACT

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have recently gained extensive attention due to their high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, serious shuttle effect and uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites restrict them from further commercial applications. As "the third electrode", functional separators are of equal significance as both anodes and cathodes in LSBs. The challenges mentioned above are effectively addressed with rational design and optimization in separators, thereby enhancing their reversible capacities and cycle stability. The review discusses the status/operation mechanism of functional separators, then primarily focuses on recent research progress in versatile separators with purposeful modifications for LSBs, and summarizes the methods and characteristics of separator modification, including heterojunction engineering, single atoms, quantum dots, and defect engineering. From the perspective of the anodes, distinct methods to inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites by modifying the separator are discussed. Modifying the separators with flame retardant materials or choosing a solid electrolyte is expected to improve the safety of LSBs. Besides, in-situ techniques and theoretical simulation calculations are proposed to advance LSBs. Finally, future challenges and prospects of separator modifications for next-generation LSBs are highlighted. We believe that the review will be enormously essential to the practical development of advanced LSBs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The impact of the loss-of-function (LOF) genetic variant PCSK9 R46L on glucose homeostasis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains uncertain, despite its established correlation with diminished blood cholesterol levels. This meta-analysis aimed at exploring the effect of the PCSK9 R46L genetic variant on plasma insulin and glucose levels, risk of diabetes mellitus and CVD. METHODS AND RESULTS: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched for cohort and case-control studies published until October 1, 2023. The studies should report the association of the PCSK9 R46L genetic variant with one of the following: fasting plasma insulin, blood glucose levels, diabetes mellitus, and CVD risk. A dominant model of the PCSK9 R46L genetic variant was employed to statistical analysis. The meta-analyses were performed for continuous variables with standard mean difference (SMD), categorical variables with odds ratio (OR) using a random-effects model. A total of 17 articles with 20 studies engaging 1,186,861 population were identified and mobilized for these analyses. The overall results indicated that, compared with non-carriers of the PCSK9 R46L genetic variant, carriers of the PCSK9 R46L genetic variant did not increase or decrease the levels of fasting plasma insulin (3 studies with 7277 population; SMD, 0.08; 95% CI, -0.04 to 0.19; P = 0.270), and the levels of fasting plasma glucose (7 studies with 9331 population; SMD, 0.03; 95% CI, -0.08 to 0.13; P = 0.610). However, carriers of the PCSK9 R46L genetic variant indeed had 17% reduction in the risk of CVD (11 studies with 558,263 population; OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.71 to 0.98; P = 0.030), and 9% increase in the risk of diabetes mellitus (10 studies with 744,466 population; OR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.04 to 1.14; P < 0.01). Meta-regression analyses indicated that the increased risk of diabetes mellitus and the reduced risk of CVD were positively correlated with reduction in LDL-C (P = 0.004 and 0.033, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: PCSK9 R46L genetic variant exhibited an elevated susceptibility to diabetes mellitus alongside a reduced vulnerability to CVD.

In the context of sustainable development, market competition is intensifying, and financial constraints have emerged as a significant hindrance to green project investment. Green Supply Chain Finance (GSCF), characterized by long-term collaboration, has emerged as a crucial financial approach to mitigate corporate financial limitations and channel capital flows into environmentally friendly industries. We propose a two-echelon supply chain with one supplier and two competing retailers over a single period and investigate ordering, sales, and financing decisions simultaneously under competition. Retailers constrained by financial considerations may secure GSCF or traditional bank financing (BF) loans. This study investigates the influence of competition on pricing and sales strategies during the selling season. The results demonstrate that retailers select between clearance and responsive selling strategies based on the level of market competition. During the ordering season, retailers share the product market equally when interest rates are uniform, and the supplier formulates a supply chain contract while considering the financing interest rate. In the presence of differential interest rates, retailers may not always opt for the GSCF, even when they offer an interest rate advantage, due to the comprehensive impacts of operational and financial strategies. Remarkably, competitive retailers do not choose the GSCF when their initial green investment capital surpasses a certain threshold.

Background: The slash disposal-burning forest-in high-intensity management Eucalyptus grandis × urophylla plantation has accelerated soil degradation. Statement of the problem: Slash disposals is a contributing factor, but its specific role in the correlation between rainfall-runoff and soil erosion remains elusive. Objectives: his study investigated the characteristics of rainfall-runoff and soil erosion resistance in different methods of slash disposals in plantation. Methods: Three methods of slash disposal, namely burning forest (BF), moving away (MA), and spreading evenly (SE), were established. A field simulation experiment of rainfall was conducted, and path analysis was used. Results: The findings revealed that the water holding, infiltrating properties and the time the rainfall-runoff generated of SE were increased by approximately 10∼20 %, 100 %, and 80 %, respectively, compared with BF and MA. Water loss, soil loss and nutrient loss were significantly reduced by 62.23 % and 61.56 %, 69.06 % and 49.55 %, and 58.8 % and 65.42 % in SE and BF compared to MA. Path analysis suggested that different from BF and MA, the correlation between soil water properties and rainfall-runoff factors in SE was weakened, simultaneously considering the result that SE had the lower proportions of silt for sediment component (75.31 %), it stabilized the soil structure. Conclusions and prospect: Consequently, SE mitigated the erosion force by reducing rainfall-runoff and enhancing the anti-erosion of soil through improved water properties, making it a viable slash disposal. This work provides a detailed description of the soil erosion characteristics of plantation, including water, soil, and nutrient losses caused by rainfall-runoff, as well as the soil anti-erosion due to different slash disposals. These findings offer valuable insights for the management of high-intensity Eucalyptus grandis × urophylla plantations.

Fifth generation (5G) wireless communication is being rolled out around the world. In this work, the latest radio frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure measurement results on commercial 28-GHz band 5G base stations (BSs) deployed in the urban area of Tokyo, Japan, are presented. The measurements were conducted under realistic traffic conditions with a 5G smartphone and using both omnidirectional and horn antennas. First and foremost, in all cases, the electric-field (E-field) intensity is much lower (<-38 dB) than the exposure limits. The E-field intensities for traffic-off cases do not show any significant difference between the two antennas with the maximum being 3.6 dB. For traffic-on cases, the omnidirectional antenna can undesirably capture the radio wave from the smartphone in some cases, resulting in a 7-13 dB higher E-field intensity than that using the horn antenna. We also present comparative results between 4G long term evolution BSs and sub-6-GHz band and 28-GHz band 5G BSs and provide recommendations on acquiring meaningful EMF exposure data. This work is a further step toward the standardization of the measurement method regarding quasi-millimeter/millimeter wave 5G BSs.

Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) is a crucial rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of melatonin. AANAT has been confirmed to be independently duplicated and inactivated in different animal taxa in order to adapt to the environment. However, the evolutionary forces associated with having a single copy of AANAT remain unclear. The greater horseshoe bat has a single copy of AANAT but exhibits different hibernation rhythms in various populations. We analyzed the adaptive evolution at the gene and protein levels of AANAT from three distinct genetic lineages in China: northeast (NE), central east (CE), and southwest (SW). The results revealed greater genetic diversity in the AANAT loci of the NE and CE lineage populations that have longer hibernation times, and there were two positive selection loci. The catalytic capacity of AANAT in the Liaoning population that underwent positive selection was significantly higher than that of the Yunnan population (p < 0.05). This difference may be related to the lower proportion of α helix and the variation in two interface residues. The adaptive evolution of AANAT was significantly correlated with climate and environment (p < 0.05). After controlling for geographical factors (latitude and altitude), the evolution of AANAT by the negative temperature factor was represented by the monthly mean temperature (r = -0.6, p < 0.05). The results identified the gene level variation, functional adaptation, and evolutionary driving factors of AANAT, provide an important foundation for further understanding the adaptive evolution of the single copy of AANAT in pteropods, and may offer evidence for adaptive hibernation rhythms in bats.

Objectives: This retrospective case-controlled study aimed to evaluate the association between the severity of fall-related injuries and fall-risk-increasing drugs (FRIDs) in hospitalized patients. Methods: Data were collected from Changhua Christian Hospital, Taiwan, of all adult inpatients who experienced falls between January 2017 and December 2021, and were divided into two groups based on whether they sustained severe fall-related injuries. Retrospective data that may affect the severity of fall-related injuries and the use of FRIDs were investigated. Results: Among 1231 documented cases of falls, 26 patients sustained severe fall-related injuries. Older patients and those with osteoporosis were more susceptible to more severe injuries from a fall. The use of mobility aids and osteoporosis medications showed protective effects against fall injuries. No significant association was observed between fall-related injuries and comorbidities or FRIDs. Multivariate analysis confirmed the inverse correlation between the use of mobility aids, osteoporosis medications, and fall severity. Patients with osteoporosis exhibited significantly higher odds of sustaining more severe injuries with a fall (odds ratio = 3.02, 95% confidence interval: 1.21-7.53). Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of addressing risk factors associated with fall severity among hospitalized patients. Providing mobility aids to persons at greater risk.

ABSTRACT

Fabrication of versatile hydrogels in a facile and effective manner represents a pivotal challenge in the field of biomaterials. Herein, a novel strategy is presented for preparing on-demand degradable hydrogels with multilevel responsiveness. By employing selenol-dichlorotetrazine nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) to synthesize hydrogels under mild conditions in a buffer solution, the necessity of additives or posttreatments can be obviated. The nucleophilic and redox reactions between selenol and tetrazine culminate in the formation of three degradable chemical bonds-diselenide, aryl selenide, and dearomatized selenide-in a single, expeditious step. The resultant hydrogel manifests exceptional adaptability to intricate environments in conjunction with self-healing and on-demand degradation properties. Furthermore, the resulting material demonstrated light-triggered antibacterial activity. Animal studies further underscore the potential of integrating metformin into Se-Tz hydrogels under green light irradiation, as it effectively stimulates angiogenesis and collagen deposition, thereby fostering efficient wound healing. In comparison to previously documented hydrogels, Se-Tz hydrogels exhibit controlled degradation and drug release, outstanding antibacterial activity, mechanical robustness, and bioactivity, all without the need for costly and intricate preparation procedures. These findings underscore Se-Tz hydrogels as a safe and effective therapeutic option for diabetic wound dressings.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: The relationship between the consumption of different beverages and the risk of microvascular complications in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of individual beverage consumption, including artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs), sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), tea, coffee, natural juice, and yogurt, with the risk of microvascular complications in adults with T2D. METHODS: This cohort study included 6676 participants with T2D who were free of macrovascular and microvascular complications at baseline in the UK Biobank. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 11.7 years, 1116 cases of composite microvascular complications were documented. After multivariable adjustment, a linear dose-response relationship was demonstrated between the consumption of ASBs and SSBs and the risk of microvascular complications. Compared with nonconsumers, those who consumed ≥2.0 units/day of ASBs and SSBs had an HR (95% CI) of 1.44 (1.18-1.75) and 1.32 (1.00-1.76) for composite microvascular complications, respectively. In addition, higher tea consumption was associated with a lower risk of diabetic retinopathy, with an HR (95% CI) of 0.72 (0.57-0.92) for whom consuming ≥4.0 units/day. There was no significant association between individual beverage consumption and the risk of diabetic neuropathy. No significant association was observed between the consumption of coffee, natural juice, or yogurt and the risks of microvascular complications. Moreover, substituting half units/day of ASBs or SSBs with tea or coffee was associated with a 16% to 28% lower risk of microvascular complications. CONCLUSION: Higher consumption of ASBs and SSBs was linearly associated with an increased risk of microvascular complications in adults with T2D.

ABSTRACT

In view of the rapid development and application of blockchain technology, this paper considers a secondary supply chain system consisting of a single upstream supplier and a downstream e-tailer that implements blockchain technology and a traditional e-tailer that does not implement blockchain technology. We establish the demand function of two channels based on consumers' sensitivity to the blockchain and use the Stackelberg game model to compare and analyse the e-tailers' profits from the two channels. For the basic properties, interestingly, we find that there exists a critical threshold on the cost sensitivity to effort that helps each e-tailer decide whether to implement effort. If the cost sensitivity to effort is high, the two-sided e-tailers will reduce their effort as much as possible to obtain greater profits. Conversely, if the cost sensitivity to effort is low, they will increase their effort to obtain more benefits. We also discuss the role of blockchain technology in competition between e-tailers and analyse the impact of the product brand effect brought by the traceability characteristic of blockchain on the competition between e-tailers. To check the robustness of the core results and to investigate different forms of supply chain configurations, this paper further develops the analysis of the supplier entering agency agreements with two-sided e-tailers. Under this scenario, the supplier sells their products directly to consumers through two-sided e-platforms and shares revenue with e-tailers as platform agency fees. These core ideas remain valid in the extended model.
