ABSTRACT

Motivated by the driving force to address global water scarcity, industrial water resources, as the second largest consumption of water resources, its security assessment plays a crucial role in improving the current situation. Hence, this paper proposes a novel methodology to conduct the industrial water resources security (IWRS) assessment. Firstly, a more targeted assessment system based on the framework of the Pressure-State-Response (P-S-R) on IWRS is established. Then, enhanced with a double hierarchy hesitant fuzzy linguistic term set (DHHFLTS), the Best-Worst Method (BWM) now determines subjective weights through DHHFLTS-BWM (DF-BWM). By introducing the Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC) method, which considers the indicator inteactions, objective weights are obtained to modify the subjective weights. Furthermore, the global dominance of all alternatives is calculated by a TODIMSort method and grading them. Moreover, 16 cities in Anhui Province are taken as examples to assess IWRS in the decade from 2011 to 2020. Comparative analysis with original BWM, time series analysis, sensitivity analysis on loss attenuation coefficient, coupling and coordination analysis and obstacle analysis on all indicators are conducted to verify the rationality, effectiveness, and stability of the proposed assessment methodology. Simultaneously, explore the existing issues within IWRS. It can be seen from the results that the performance of Lu'an and Huainan cities is relatively better, while Ma'anshan city shows relatively poorer performance. In addition, per capita water resources and wastewater treatment facilities have a significant impact on the IWRS. Finally, some management suggestions are proposed to enhance the scientific and effective management of industrial water resources and ensure their sustainable utilization.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nemonoxacin malate is a novel non-fluorinated quinolone for oral and intravenous (IV) administration. This phase 3, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel-controlled clinical trial (NCT02205112) evaluated the efficacy and safety of IV nemonoxacin vs. levofloxacin for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in adult patients. METHODS: Eligible patients were randomised to receive 500 mg nemonoxacin or levofloxacin via IV infusion, once daily for 7-14 days. The primary endpoint was the clinical cure rate at the test-of-cure (TOC) visit in the modified intent-to-treat (mITT) population. Secondary efficacy and safety were also compared between nemonoxacin and levofloxacin. RESULTS: Overall, 525 patients were randomised and treated with nemonoxacin (n = 349) or levofloxacin (n = 176). The clinical cure rate was 91.8% (279/304) for nemonoxacin and 85.7% (138/161) for levofloxacin in the mITT population (P > 0.05). The clinical efficacy of nemonoxacin was non-inferior to levofloxacin for treatment of CAP. Microbiological success rate with nemonoxacin was 88.8% (95/107) and with levofloxacin was 87.8% (43/49) (P > 0.05) at the TOC visit in the bacteriological mITT population. The incidence of drug-related adverse events (AEs) was 37.1% in the nemonoxacin group and 22.2% in the levofloxacin group. These AEs were mostly local reactions at the infusion site, nausea, elevated alanine aminotransferase/aspartate aminotransferase (ALT/AST), and QT interval prolongation. The nemonoxacin-related AEs were mostly mild and resolved after discontinuation of nemonoxacin. CONCLUSIONS: Nemonoxacin 500 mg IV once daily for 7-14 days is effective and safe and non-inferior to levofloxacin for treating CAP in adult patients.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: As a systemic autoimmune disorder, the prognosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is intricately linked to inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the association between the advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI), a comprehensive indicator of inflammation combined with nutritional status, and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among patients diagnosed with RA. Methods: The 2,305 RA patients from NHANES (2001-2018) included in the analysis were categorized into three groups according to ALI tertiles. Weighted Kaplan-Meier and multivariate COX regression analyses evaluated the relationship between ALI and mortality. The time-dependent characteristic curve (ROC) was used to assess the prediction accuracy of ALI. Results: During a median follow-up of 7.92 years, 591 participants died from all causes, including 197 from cardiovascular diseases. Increased ALI was associated with a decreased probability of death. The full COX model revealed lower all-cause mortality hazard risks in the T2 (HR: 0.67, 95%CI: 0.54-0.83) and T3 (HR: 0.47 95%CI: 0.33-0.67, p for tend <0.001) groups compared to T1, and the risk of cardiovascular mortality was also lower in the groups of T2 (HR: 0.47, 95%CI: 0.31-0.70) and T3 (HR: 0.34, 95%CI: 0.19-0.62, p for trend <0.001). Furthermore, the ROC analysis underscored the strong predictive capability of ALI (AUC for 1-year all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were 0.73 and 0.79, respectively). Conclusion: This cohort study demonstrated the higher accuracy of ALI in predicting mortality in RA patients, highlighting the important clinical value of ALI in risk assessment and prognosis evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Advanced glycation end product-modified low-density lipoprotein (AGE-LDL) is related to inflammation and the development of atherosclerosis. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) has a role in the condition known as calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). Here, we hypothesized that the AGE-LDL/RAGE axis could also be involved in the pathophysiological mechanism of CAVD. METHODS: Human aortic valve interstitial cells (HAVICs) were stimulated with AGE-LDL following pre-treatment with or without interleukin 37 (IL-37). Low-density lipoprotein receptor deletion (Ldlr-/-) hamsters were randomly allocated to chow diet (CD) group and high carbohydrate and high fat diet (HCHFD) group. RESULTS: AGE-LDL levels were significantly elevated in patients with CAVD and in a hamster model of aortic valve calcification. Our in vitro data further demonstrated that AGE-LDL augmented the expression of intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in a dose-dependent manner through NF-κB activation, which was attenuated by nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) inhibitor Bay11-7082. The expression of RAGE was augmented in calcified aortic valves, and knockdown of RAGE in HAVICs attenuated the AGE-LDL-induced inflammatory and osteogenic responses as well as NF-κB activation. IL-37 suppressed inflammatory and osteogenic responses and NF-κB activation in HAVICs. The vivo experiment also demonstrate that supplementation with IL-37 inhibited valvular inflammatory response and thereby suppressed valvular osteogenic activities. CONCLUSIONS: AGE-LDL promoted inflammatory responses and osteogenic differentiation through RAGE/NF-κB pathway in vitro and aortic valve lesions in vivo. IL-37 suppressed the AGE-LDL-induced inflammatory and osteogenic responses in vitro and attenuated aortic valve lesions in a hamster model of CAVD.

ABSTRACT

Heterogeneous catalysts with highly active and at the same time stable isolated metal sites constitute a key factor for the advancement of sustainable and cost-effective chemical synthesis. In particular, the development of more practical, and durable iron-based materials is of central interest for organic synthesis, especially for the preparation of chemical products related to life science applications. Here, we report the preparation of Fe-single atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) entrapped in N-doped mesoporous carbon support with unprecedented potential in the preparation of different kinds of amines. The synthetic protocol of Fe-SACs is based on primary pyrolysis of Fe-nitrogen complexes on SiO2 and subsequent removal of silica resulting in the formation of unique mesoporous N-doped carbon support with the pore size controlled by the size of the original silica nanoparticles. The resulting stable and reusable Fe-SACs allow for the reductive amination of a broad range of aldehydes and ketones with ammonia and amines to produce diverse primary, secondary, and tertiary amines including N-methylated products as well as drugs, agrochemicals, and other biomolecules (amino acid esters and amides) utilizing green hydrogen.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Serum vitamin D is associated with hyperuricemia. However, previous studies have been controversial, with limited focus on children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between serum vitamin D and serum uric acid (SUA) levels in children and adolescents. METHODS: The cross-sectional survey comprised 4777 participants aged 6 to 18 years, while the longitudinal survey involved 1641 participants aged 6 to 12 years, all derived from an ongoing cohort study in Shenzhen, China. Restricted cubic splines were used to visualize the dose-response relationship between vitamin D and SUA and the risk of higher SUA status. Two-segment generalized linear models (GLM) and logistic models were used to assess the association between vitamin D and SUA and higher SUA status, respectively. The longitudinal analysis used GLM. RESULTS: We observed an inverted U-shaped relationship between vitamin D and SUA (p-overall < 0.0001, p-nonlinear = 0.0002), as well as the risk of higher SUA status (p-overall = 0.0054, p-nonlinear = 0.0015), with the vitamin D inflection point at 24.31 and 21.29 ng/mL, respectively. A 10 ng/mL increment in 25(OH)D3 levels, when below 20.92 ng/mL, was associated with a 68% rise in the risk of higher SUA status (OR: 1.68, 95%CI: 1.07-2.66). Conversely, when 25(OH)D3 levels were above or equal to 20.92 ng/mL, a 10 ng/mL increment was associated with a 45% reduction risk of higher SUA status (OR: 0.55, 95%CI: 0.36-0.84). Longitudinal analysis indicated that the annual change of SUA was from -4.80 (ß, 95%CI: -10.74, 1.13) to -9.00 (ß, 95%CI: -15.03, -2.99) and then to -6.77 (ß, 95%CI: -12.83, -0.71, p for trend = 0.0212) µmol/L when increasing the quartile of vitamin D3. CONCLUSIONS: An inverse U-shaped relationship was observed between vitamin D and SUA as well as the risk of higher SUA status. Sufficient vitamin D levels appear to play a preventative role against the age-related increase in SUA. Ensuring adequate vitamin D levels may be beneficial in improving uric acid metabolism.

ABSTRACT

With the electrochemical performance of batteries approaching the bottleneck gradually, it is increasingly urgent to solve the safety issue. Herein, all-in-one strategy is ingeniously developed to design smart, safe, and simple (3S) practical pouch-type LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2||Graphite@SiO (NCM811||Gr@SiO) cell, taking full advantage of liquid and solid-state electrolytes. Even under the harsh thermal abuse and high voltage condition (100 °C, 3-4.5 V), the pouch-type 3S NCM811||Gr@SiO cell can present superior capacity retention of 84.6% after 250 cycles (based pouch cell: 47.8% after 250 cycles). More surprisingly, the designed 3S NCM811||Gr@SiO cell can efficiently improve self-generated heat T1 by 45 °C, increase TR triggering temperature T2 by 40 °C, and decrease the TR highest T3 by 118 °C. These superior electrochemical and safety performances of practical 3S pouch-type cells are attributed to the robust and stable anion-induced electrode-electrolyte interphases and local solid-state electrolyte protection layer. All the fundamental findings break the conventional battery design guidelines and open up a new direction to develop practical high-performance batteries.

ABSTRACT

We propose a single-layer graphene electro-absorption modulator (EAM) with an angled waveguide sidewall. By utilizing the hybridization of the TM0 mode and the TE1 mode in the waveguide, the light-graphene interaction is enhanced. A modulation depth of 0.124 dB/µm and a figure of merit up to 25 are obtained at 1550 nm. Moreover, we show that the longitudinal electric field plays a significant role in making the optical absorption efficient, which indicates that modulation depth can be increased by enhancing the longitudinal electric field in modulators. This provides a promising solution for the future design of graphene optical modulators.

ABSTRACT

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have been developed quickly as an emerging functional material with applications in optical and electronic devices, owing to their highly electron-delocalized backbones and versatile side groups for facile processibility, high mechanical strength, and environmental stability. CPs exhibit multistimuli responsive behavior and fluorescence quenching properties by incorporating azobenzene functionality into their molecular structures. Over the past few decades, significant progress has been made in developing functional azobenzene-based conjugated polymers (azo-CPs), utilizing diverse molecular design strategies and synthetic pathways. This article comprehensively reviews the rapidly evolving research field of azo-CPs, focusing on the structural characteristics and synthesis methods of general azo-CPs, as well as the applications of charged azo-CPs, specifically azobenzene-based conjugated polyelectrolytes (azo-CPEs). Based on their molecular structures, azo-CPs can be broadly categorized into three primary types: linear CPs with azobenzene incorporated into the side chain, linear CPs with azobenzene integrated into the main chain, and branched CPs containing azobenzene moieties. These systems are promising for biomedical applications in biosensing, bioimaging, targeted protein degradation, and cellular apoptosis.

ABSTRACT

Alpha-tellurene (α-Te), a two-dimensional (2D) material that has been theoretically predicted and experimentally verified, has garnered significant attention due to its unique properties. In this study, we investigated the 2D trilayer MoS2/α-Te/WS2 van der Waals heterostructure with different stacking orders using first-principles calculations. Our results indicate that this heterotrilayer exhibits an intrinsic type-I band alignment and an indirect band gap similar to that of monolayer α-Te. Notably, the band edges of the heterostructure can be modulated by biaxial strain and an external electric field, enabling these edges to arise from different monolayers. This controlled manipulation facilitates the effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and prolongs the carrier lifetime. Moreover, the heterostructure can undergo a transition from an indirect to a direct band gap under biaxial compressive strain or a moderate negative electric field, and semiconductor-to-metal transition can also be achieved by intensifying the biaxial strain and external electric field. Overall, our research provides valuable theoretical insights into the potential applications of α-Te-based heterostructures, rendering them promising candidates for the next generation of nanodevices.

In this study, we introduce a novel series of gemini surfactants with amide groups (HDAB, HDAHD, and HDAPX) and use these surfactants to decorate sodium vermiculite (Na-Vt) for the adsorption of Ibuprofen (IBP) from wastewater. Exceptional IBP uptake on organo-vermiculites (organo-Vts) is obtained, with maximum adsorption capacities reaching 249.87, 342.21, and 460.15 mg/g for HDAB-Vt, HDAHD-Vt, and HDAPX-Vt (C0 = 500 mg/L, modifier dosage = 0.2 CEC), respectively. The adsorption of IBP is well fitted by pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Freundlich isotherm models, verifying chemical adsorption processes with multilayer arrangement of IBP in organo-Vts. Thermodynamically, the removal of IBP on HDAHD-Vt is exothermic, while the endothermic nature aptly describes the adsorption process of HDAB-Vt and HDAPX-Vt. Moreover, organo-Vts can be stably regenerated in three cycles. Outstanding adsorption performance of organo-Vts is attributed to synergistic effects of the partition process and functional interaction, which are influenced by the steric hindrance and chain configuration of the modifier. A combined evaluation of adsorption tests and fitting calculations is employed to reveal the adsorption mechanism: (i) the incorporation of amides into the alkyl chain significantly enhances the utilization of the interlayer space in organo-Vts. (ii) Smaller steric hindrance and higher rigidity of the modifier spacer contribute to improved adsorption performance. The findings in this study rekindle interest in Vt-based adsorbents, which demonstrate comparable potential to other emerging adsorbents that are yet to be fully explored.

BACKGROUND: In heart failure (HF), mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic remodeling lead to a reduction in energy productivity and aggravate cardiomyocyte injury. Supplementation with α-ketoglutarate (AKG) alleviated myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis in mice with HF and improved cardiac insufficiency. However, the myocardial protective mechanism of AKG remains unclear. We verified the hypothesis that AKG improves mitochondrial function by upregulating NAD+ levels and activating silent information regulator 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1) in cardiomyocytes. METHODS: In vivo, 2% AKG was added to the drinking water of mice undergoing transverse aortic constriction (TAC) surgery. Echocardiography and biopsy were performed to evaluate cardiac function and pathological changes. Myocardial metabolomics was analyzed by liquid chromatography‒mass spectrometry (LC‒MS/MS) at 8 weeks after surgery. In vitro, the expression of SIRT1 or PINK1 proteins was inhibited by selective inhibitors and siRNA in cardiomyocytes stimulated with angiotensin II (AngII) and AKG. NAD+ levels were detected using an NAD test kit. Mitophagy and ferroptosis levels were evaluated by Western blotting, qPCR, JC-1 staining and lipid peroxidation analysis. RESULTS: AKG supplementation after TAC surgery could alleviate myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis and improve cardiac function in mice. Metabolites of the malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS) were increased, but the TCA cycle and fatty acid metabolism pathway could be inhibited in the myocardium of TAC mice after AKG supplementation. Decreased NAD+ levels and SIRT1 protein expression were observed in heart of mice and AngII-treated cardiomyocytes. After AKG treatment, these changes were reversed, and increased mitophagy, inhibited ferroptosis, and alleviated damage in cardiomyocytes were observed. When the expression of SIRT1 was inhibited by a selective inhibitor and siRNA, the protective effect of AKG was suppressed. CONCLUSION: Supplementation with AKG can improve myocardial hypertrophy, fibrosis and chronic cardiac insufficiency caused by pressure overload. By increasing the level of NAD+, the SIRT-PINK1 and SIRT1-GPX4 signaling pathways are activated to promote mitophagy and inhibit ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes, which ultimately alleviates cardiomyocyte damage.

ABSTRACT

Solid-state batteries have become the most anticipated option for compatibility with high-energy density and safety. In situ polymerization, a novel strategy for the construction of solid-state systems, has extended its application from solid polymer electrolyte systems to other solid-state systems. This review summarizes the application of in situ polymerization strategies in solid-state batteries, which covers the construction of polymer, the formation of the electrolyte system, and the design of the full cell. For the polymer skeleton, multiple components and structures are being chosen. In the construction of solid polymer electrolyte systems, the choice of initiator for in situ polymerization is the focus of this review. New initiators, represented by lithium salts and additives, are the preferred choice because of their ability to play more diverse roles, while the coordination with other components can also improve the electrical properties of the system and introduce functionalities. In the construction of entire solid-state battery systems, the application of in situ polymerization to structure construction, interface construction, and the use of separators with multiplex functions has brought more possibilities for the development of various solid-state systems and even the perpetuation of liquid electrolytes.

Objective: To evaluate the image quality of low-dose temporal bone computed tomography (CT) in otitis media and mastoiditis patients by using deep learning reconstruction (DLR). Materials and methods: A total of ninety-seven temporal bones from 53 consecutive adult patients who had suspected otitis media and mastoiditis and underwent temporal bone CT were prospectively enrolled. All patients underwent high resolution CT protocol (group A) and an additional low-dose protocol (group B). In group A, high resolution data were reconstructed by filter back projection (FBP). In group B, low-dose data were reconstructed by DLR mild (B1), DLR standard (B2) and DLR strong (B3). The objective image quality was analyzed by measuring the CT value and image noise on the transverse image and calculating the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on incudomallear joint, retroauricular muscle, vestibule and subcutaneous fat. Subjective image quality was analyzed by using a five-point scale to evaluate nine anatomical structures of middle and inner ear. The number of temporal bone lesions which involved in five structures of middle ear were assessed in group A, B1, B2 and B3 images. Results: There were no significant differences in the CT values of the four reconstruction methods at four structures (all p > 0.05). The DLR group B1, B2 and B3 had significantly less image noise and a significantly higher SNR than group A at four structures (all p < 0.001). The group B1 had comparable subjective image quality as group A in nine structures (all p > 0.05), however, the group B3 had lower subjective image quality than group A in modiolus, spiral osseous lamina and stapes (all p < 0.001), the group B2 had lower subjective image quality than group A in modiolus and spiral osseous lamina (both p < 0.05). The number of temporal bone lesions which involved in five structures for group A, B1 and B2 images were no significant difference (all p > 0.05), however, the number of temporal bone lesions which involved in mastoid for group B3 images were significantly more than group A (p < 0.05). The radiation dose of high resolution CT protocol and low-dose protocol were 0.55 mSv and 0.11 mSv, respectively. Conclusion: Compared with high resolution CT protocol, in the low-dose protocol of temporal bone CT, DLR mild and standard could improve the objective image quality, maintain good subjective image quality and satisfy clinical diagnosis of otitis media and mastoiditis patients.

The purpose of the meta-analysis was to evaluate and compare the risk factors for neurosurgical surgical site infection (SSI) after craniotomy. Using dichotomous or contentious random or fixed effect models, the odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed based on the examination of the meta-analysis results. Eighteen analyses, covering 11 068 craniotomies between 2001 and 2023, were included in the current meta-analysis. Subjects with SSIs had a significantly younger age (MD, -2.49; 95% CI, -2.95 to -2.04, p < 0.001), longer operation duration (MD, 10.21; 95% CI, 6.49-13.94, p < 0.001) and longer length of postoperative hospital stay (MD, 1.52; 95% CI, 0.45-2.60, p = 0.006) compared to subjects with no SSI with craniotomy. However, no significant difference was found between craniotomy subjects with SSIs and with no SSI in gender (OR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.76-1.07, p = 0.23), and combination with other infection (OR, 3.93; 95% CI, 0.28-56.01, p = 0.31). The data that were looked at showed that younger age, longer operation duration and longer length of postoperative hospital stay can be considered as risk factors of SSI in subjects with craniotomy; however, gender and combination with other infections are not. Nonetheless, consideration should be given to their values because several studies only involved a small number of patients, and there are not many studies available for some comparisons.

ABSTRACT

Edwardsiella piscicida, an infectious bacterium, causes great economic losses to the aquaculture industry. Immersion bath which is the closest way to how the fish infect bacterial pathogens in the natural environment is an effective route of artificial infection. In this study, the dynamic process of E. piscicida infection, in the spotted sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) was evaluated via the immersion bath. The results showed that soaking the spotted sea bass with 3 × 106 CFU mL-1 E. piscicida for 30 min could artificially induce edwardsiellosis. The higher culture temperature (28.5 ± 0.5°C) or the longer bath time (30 min) would lead to higher mortality of fish. E.piscicida first invaded the gill, then entered the blood circulation to infect the spleen and kidney, where it is colonized, and gradually multiplied in the liver and brain. Meanwhile, the fluorescence in situ hybridization showed that the localization of E. piscicida in the gill and foregut after the immersion challenge proceeded from the exterior to the interior. The invasion of pathogens triggers the immune response of fish and causes tissue damage to the host. The quantitative real-time PCR results displayed an increase in the relative expression level of immune genes (NK-lysin, LZM, IgM and IgD). Otherwise, the most notable histopathological changes of the infected spotted sea bass were multifocal necrosis. Findings in this study broaden our understanding of the infection conditions of E. piscicida and its pathogenicity to the spotted sea bass.

ABSTRACT

We investigated aging-related changes in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) in the spinal cord of aged dogs. At all levels of the spinal cord examined, NADPH-d activities were observed in neurons and fibers in the superficial dorsal horn (DH), dorsal gray commissure (DGC) and around the central canal (CC). A significant number of NADPH-d positive macro-diameter fibers, termed megaloneurites, were discovered in the sacral spinal cord (S1-S3) segments of aged dogs. The distribution of megaloneurites was characterized from the dorsal root entry zone (DREZ) into the superficial dorsal horn, along the lateral collateral pathway (LCP) to the region of sacral parasympathetic nucleus (SPN), DGC and around the CC, but not in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar segments. Double staining of NADPH-d histochemistry and immunofluorescence showed that NADPH-d positive megaloneurites co-localized with vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) immunoreactivity. We believed that megaloneurites may in part represent visceral afferent projections to the SPN and/or DGC. The NADPH-d megaloneurites in the aged sacral spinal cord indicated some anomalous changes in the neurites, which might account for a disturbance in the aging pathway of the autonomic and sensory nerve in the pelvic visceral organs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Peripheral lung lesions can be sampled using various techniques, including computer tomography-guided transthoracic needle aspiration, electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy, virtual navigation bronchoscopy, and radial probe endobronchial ultrasound transbronchial lung biopsy. Mediastinal lesions can be sampled using techniques like convex probe endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (CEBUS-TBNA) and endoscopic ultrasound-fine-needle aspiration. However, effective, safe techniques for lesions adjacent to the segmental or subsegmental bronchi are lacking. Herein, we retrospectively evaluated the diagnostic yield and safety of radial probe endobronchial ultrasound-assisted transbronchial needle aspiration (REBUS-TBNA) for lesions adjacent to the segmental bronchi, and explored the factors related to diagnostic yield. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the diagnostic yield and safety of REBUS-TBNA cases performed in our department from January 2019 to December 2022. Observation group patients had undergone REBUS-TBNA for lesions adjacent to the segmental bronchi; control group patients had undergone CEBUS-TBNA for mediastinal or hilar lesions. Patient characteristics and lesion sizes, diagnostic yield, adverse events, and relations between diagnostic yield and clinical characteristics were analyzed. RESULTS: There were not statistically significant between-group differences in sex, age, diagnostic yield, or rate of adverse events. The observation group (n = 25; 17 male, 8 female) had a mean age of 64.76 ± 10.75 years. The average lesion size was 4.66 ± 1.07 cm, and lesions were predominantly in the upper lobes (80%). REBUS-TBNA diagnostic yield was 84%, with no adverse events reported. Diagnostic yield was not associated with lesion size or extent of bronchial stenosis; however, it was positively correlated with number of punctures. Patients with > 3 punctures had a significantly higher diagnostic yield than those with ≤ 3 punctures. CONCLUSIONS: REBUS-TBNA is a safe, effective diagnostic technique, particularly for lesions adjacent to the segmental or subsegmental bronchi of the upper lobe. Performing more than three punctures during the procedure improves the diagnostic yield. Larger-scale studies are warranted to confirm these results, and to further explore the clinical value of REBUS-TBNA.

ABSTRACT

Molecular architecture is a critical factor in regulating phase behaviors of the block copolymer and prompting the formation of unconventional nanostructures. This work meticulously designed a library of isomeric miktoarm star polymers with an architectural evolution from the linear-branched block copolymer to the miktoarm star block copolymer and to the star-like block copolymer (i.e., 3AB → 3(AB1)B2 → 3(AB)). All of the polymers have precise chemical composition and uniform chain length, eliminating inherent molecular uncertainties such as chain length distribution or architectural defects. The self-assembly behaviors were systematically studied and compared. Gradually increasing the relative length of the branched B1 block regulates the ratio between the bridge and loop configuration and effectively releases packing frustration in the formation of the spherical or cylindrical structures, leading to a substantial deflection of phase boundaries. Complex structures, such as Frank-Kasper phases, were captured at a surprisingly higher volume fraction. Rationally regulating the molecular architecture offers rich possibilities to tune the packing symmetry of block copolymers.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary nodule growth rate assessment is critical in the management of subsolid pulmonary nodules (SSNs) during clinical follow-up. The present study aimed to develop a model to predict the growth rate of SSNs. METHODS: A total of 273 growing SSNs with clinical information and 857 computed tomography (CT) scans were retrospectively analyzed. The images were randomly divided into training and validation sets. All images were categorized into fast-growth (volume doubling time (VDT) ≤ 400 days) and slow-growth (VDT > 400 days) groups. Models for predicting the growth rate of SSNs were developed using radiomics and clinical features. The models' performance was evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC) values for the receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS: The fast- and slow-growth groups included 108 and 749 scans, respectively, and 10 radiomics features and three radiographic features (nodule density, presence of spiculation, and presence of vascular changes) were selected to predict the growth rate of SSNs. The nomogram integrating radiomics and radiographic features (AUC = 0.928 and AUC = 0.905, respectively) performed better than the radiographic (AUC = 0.668 and AUC = 0.689, respectively) and radiomics (AUC = 0.888 and AUC = 0.816, respectively) models alone in both the training and validation sets. CONCLUSION: The nomogram model developed by combining radiomics with radiographic features can predict the growth rate of SSNs more accurately than traditional radiographic models. It can also optimize clinical treatment decisions for patients with SSNs and improve their long-term management.
