ABSTRACT
Introduction: Older adults, who are considered to be at higher risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus, have been adversely affected by the pandemic. Objective: This prospective longitudinal study aimed to verify changes in the physical fitness of older adults during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, considering gender and age group. Methods: Seventy-six older individuals (aged 72.6±6.47 years) who were part of a university extension program participated in the study. Their physical fitness was assessed using the Senior Fitness Test (SFT), which was administered by trained researchers before the pandemic (November 2019) and during the pandemic (April 2022). Results: The results showed a significant decline in physical fitness in all tests, except for the Arm Curl Test. The greatest decline was observed in the 6-minute walk test. Both men and women exhibited greater declines in aerobic endurance and lower limb strength. Older adults aged 80 years or older were the most affected, exhibiting the greatest declines, particularly in aerobic endurance and lower limb strength. Conclusion: The study concludes that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant negative impact on the physical fitness of older adults, especially women and those aged 80 years or older. Therefore, physical activity programs should be implemented for these populations to minimize or even reverse the negative impacts caused by COVID-19 on their physical fitness.
ABSTRACT
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder that affects approximately 1 billion people worldwide. Advanced age is a significant risk factor. Various treatment options have been explored to reduce the severity of OSA symptoms and physical exercise has emerged as a potential alternative therapy. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of a combined exercise program with sleep education on sleep quality and on the severity of OSA in older adults. Methods: This is a randomized clinical trial with two parallel groups that will involve individuals of both genders aged between 60 and 79 years who have an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of more than 15 events per hour and who have not received or are currently undergoing treatment for OSA. Older adults who have engaged in regular exercise in the last six months and individuals with contraindications to exercise will be excluded. The study will assess outcomes related to OSA, including AHI, oxygen desaturation index, minimum and mean oxyhemoglobin saturation, sleep efficiency, sleep latency, and the type of respiratory events. Additionally, sleep quality-related outcomes, daytime sleepiness, physical activity, physical fitness, aerobic capacity, cognitive status, anthropometric measures, and health-related quality of life will be analyzed. Participants will be randomized to two groups: a combined exercise group (involving both resistance and aerobic training) with sleep education, and a control group that will receive only educational recommendations for managing OSA. The intervention will last 12 weeks and will consist of three sessions per week, totaling 36 exercise sessions. Sample size calculation indicates a minimum number of 36 participants. Discussion: If the hypothesis is confirmed, this clinical trial will indicate an effective non-pharmacological intervention for treating OSA in older adults. This intervention could be used as an adjunct to existing approaches designed to improve OSA management. Clinical trail registration: Brazil Clinical Trials Registry (ReBEC), identifier RBR-9hk6pgz.

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to synthesize the scientific evidence on the relationship of exercise with morphology and muscle function parameters of the female pelvic floor. The design was a systematic review. METHODS: Searches were performed in MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, SCOPUS, SportDiscuss, and Google Scholar up to April 2021. Observational and experimental studies evaluating the morphology and/or function of the pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) in women were eligible. Studies reporting exercise or sports disciplines as exposure/intervention were included. RESULTS: Twenty-five studies were included. Compared with the control group, women performing vigorous and high-impact exercises exhibited lower maximum voluntary contraction of the PFM and those performing moderate exercise had better maximum voluntary contraction. Exercise practitioners had a larger hiatal area at rest, during contraction, and during Valsalva, and greater bladder neck descent than the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this review demonstrate an inverse relationship of PFM maximum voluntary contraction with exercise intensity. Qualitative synthesis showed that the studies found favorable outcomes for the control group in terms of hiatal area during contraction and Valsalva and bladder neck displacement.

ABSTRACT Based on the current scenario of accelerating social changes that reflect on the educational context, the discussion on the factors that might influence the quality of life (QOL) of Physical Education teachers is important. With the purpose of evaluating the association between QOL and sociodemographic characteristics, questionnaires on socio-demographic data and quality of life (WHOQOL-bref) were applied to 298 Physical Education teachers of Basic Education in Grande Florianópolis mesoregion, state of Santa Cantarina, Brazil. The Chi-square, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis tests with Dunn's post hoc method (p <0.05) were used for data analysis. The Physical Education teachers showed regular scores related to the general QOL; higher values for the social relations domain and lower ones for the physical domain. Some characteristics, such as sex, vital cycles, length of service in the school system, work shift, population number and the Human Development Index (HDI) of the municipalities were correlated with general QOL, as well as with the physical, psychological and environmental domains. It is concluded that QOL is associated with the socio-demographic characteristics of Physical Education teachers; thus, this should be taken into consideration when thinking of educational planning and management in Basic Education.

Objective: To compare and correlate handgrip strength (HGS) with functional capacity and cognitive status in centenarians. Method: This is a cross-sectional study. The study population consisted of 127 centenarians, of which 78 met the inclusion criteria, with a mean age of 101.7 ± 2.52 years. Cognitive status was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and functional capacity using the Katz Scale. To investigate HGS, we used a manual dynamometer. The level of significance was 5%. Results: Centenarian men have higher right (p= 0.005) and left (p<0.001) HGS compared to women. About functional capacity, centenarians more functional present higher right and left HGS (p<0.001) when compared to intermediate and less functional. Furthermore, when analyzing cognition, centenarians with preserved cognitive status have higher right and left HGS (p<0.001) than cognitively impaired elderly. In the relationship analysis, it was possible to verify that the lower the MMSE score, the higher the right (rho= 0.59; p<0.001) and left (rho= 0.57; p<0.001) HGS. Furthermore, the lower the Katz Scale score, the higher the right (rho= -0.53; p<0.001) and left (rho= -0.57; p<0.001) HGS. Conclusion: Our results show that male centenarians, more functional and with preserved cognitive status have higher HGS in both hands. Moreover, we found a moderate negative relationship between HGS and functional capacity and a moderate positive relationship between HGS and cognitive status of centenarians.
O estado cognitivo foi avaliado utilizando o Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) e a capacidade funcional utilizando a Escala Katz.

ABSTRACT
We aimed to systematically analyze reviews of randomized clinical trials that investigate the overall effect of exercise and of different types of exercise on sleep in older adults. Meta-analysis was performed to obtain the standardized mean difference of the effect of the different types of exercise. Twenty systematic reviews published between 2012 and 2020 met the inclusion criteria of this overview. Moderate significant effects of exercise were observed on overall sleep quality and its subjective components (quality, duration, latency, habitual efficiency, medication use, and daytime dysfunction). Among the types of exercise, sensitivity analysis revealed significant effects of Pilates, Tai Chi, and Baduanjin Qigong on sleep quality. Exercise has a positive effect on sleep quality in older people. Our findings are extremely important, especially for decision makers in the health area, permitting the planning of actions and evidence-based decision making. There is a lack of studies evaluating frailty and physical activity in people aged 100 years or older. This review aimed to synthesize the evidence on frailty and physical activity in centenarians. A systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. We searched the PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Lilacs databases for articles published until 18 June 2020. This review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020162913). Five studies were included in this review according to the eligibility and exclusion criteria. In summary, the reviewed studies show that centenarians are fragile and that frailty increases with age; however, women are frailer than men. The most common frailty criteria were low physical activity level (78% to 72.5%), muscle weakness (84.2% to 66%), and slow walking speed (77.6% to 48.4%). Most centenarians perform less exercise than younger older adults, have a low physical activity level, live in nursing homes, and exhibit functional disability. Regarding the methodological quality of the studies, one article was classified as regular and the other four as poor. Frailty and a low physical activity level are common in centenarians. Experimental studies with better methodological quality are necessary to better understand the causal relationship between variables.

This study aims to describe the characteristics of centenarians in terms of depressive symptoms and future life prospects, according to the level of physical activity. It is of a qualitative descriptive nature, consisting of 20 centenarians with preserved cognition, residing in Santa Catarina. The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was applied to the elderly to check depressive symptoms, with open questions about future life prospects and the pedometer to check the level of PA. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. It is noticed that the heterogeneity in the number of steps and the general average of depressive symptoms is low (4.3 ± 3.02). Most attributed their perspective of how old they want to live to God, some want to live only in health and others do not want to live anymore. It is concluded that PA does not influence the elderly in the perception of how many years they want to live, but it does make a difference in the suspicion of depression.
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to understand centenarian caregivers' perception of care burden according to sociodemographic characteristics and physical activity level. This is a descriptive study that used a mixed data (quantitative and qualitative) approach. Sixty-seven caregivers of centenarians from municipalities in Santa Catarina participated in this study. Interviews were held for application of questions about sociodemographic data, transport-related and leisure-time physical activity, caregiver burden, and suggestions for improving care. The data were collected in the centenarian's home where the caregiver worked. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and qualitative data by content analysis. The results showed that 58.2% of the caregivers were overburdened. Of these, 92.3% were females, 56.4% were 60-75 years old, 48.7% had 7 to 11 years of schooling, 53.8% were married, 66.7% were children of centenarians, the caregiving duration ranged from 1 to 5 years in 35.9%, and 69.2% cared for the older adult 24 hours/day. There was a statistically significant difference (p = 0.01) between the level of leisure-time physical activity and caregiving burden, with 64.9% of insufficiently active caregivers tending to be overburdened with the care demand. The suggestions of caregivers for improving centenarian care included having help from health professionals and relatives for care, infrastructure, and financial resources. Most burdened caregivers are insufficiently active and need assistance in taking care of their own health.

At the Ministry of Health initiative, in collaboration with national researchers, the first Physical Activity (PA) Guidelines for the Brazilian Population was prepared, including recommendations for the various stages of life and special populations. This study aims to present the methodological process of the chapter on PA recommendations for the elderly. The Elderly Work Group had 11 researchers/professionals who held weekly virtual meetings, made a systematic review of reviews, which included 50 articles, and promoted a listening among elderly (n = 22), managers (n = 17) and professionals (n = 143) from all country regions, through telephone interviews and online forms. Based on the review and the listening results, a first version of the PA Guidelines for the elderly was elaborated, which was submitted to public consultation. Forty-six valid suggestions were received for the Guide's writing, of which 34 were accepted and incorporated into the final text since they had technical and/or social relevance. As results, the Guidelines highlight the major benefits of PA for the elderly, such as enhancement of the physical, mental and social aspects, and recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate PA or 75 minutes of vigorous PA per week, considering PA in leisure time, commuting and domestic activities, as well as in work/study time. It is believed that these Guidelines will help the elderly and health professionals to get to know the benefits of PA, the recommended amount, and the different possibilities of practice through culturally appropriate messages and examples. Politically, it will reinforce the central role of PA in the prevention and control of chronic non-communicable diseases, boosting actions for its dissemination and implantation

No total, 17 (48,6%) apresentavam IU e 16 (45,7%) DSF.
ABSTRACT Urinary incontinence (UI) and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) are disorders that affect quality of life. With the change in the Brazilian age pyramid, the prevalence of such disorders tends to increase. The aim of the present study was to correlate the relationship between UI, FSD and the functionality of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) in physically active older women. This is a cross-sectional study, in which 35 older women ≥60 years old participated. Initially, the diagnostic form, the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short form (ICIQ-UI-SF) and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) were applied. Then, the PFM were evaluated by vaginal touch, following what is proposed in the perfect scheme. Among older women, 20% had both PFM dysfunctions. In total, 17 (48.6%) had UI and 16 (45.7%) FSD. There was a significant difference in the number of vaginal deliveries (p=0.028) and in the perfect schedule (p=0.033) between older women with and without FSD. There was no statistical difference between the groups with and without UI. The analysis showed an inversely proportional correlation between UI severity and sexual function in incontinent older women. (p=0.008; r=−0.622). Since, for each increase in UI severity by the ICIQ-SF, 0.577 of sexual function assessed by the FSFI is decreased (p=0.034; r=0.516). There is an association between UI and FSD in physically active older women. Some older women have both PFM dysfunctions despite being physically active. Thus, it is important to reinforce the importance of thorough evaluations, oriented physical activity and multiprofessional action in health.
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: High-impact sports can cause dysfunction to the female pelvic floor that leads to the occurrence of stress urinary incontinence. OBJECTIVE: To identify and compare the presence of urine loss between professional and amateur female volleyball athletes during a competition. METHODS: A cross-sectional and comparative study was conducted on 75 volleyball athletes, including 30 amateurs and 45 professional athletes. Female athletes 18 years of age or older were included. Urine loss during the competition was evaluated by self-report and measured by a pad test (in grams). Day-to-day urinary incontinence was identified using the Urinary Distress Inventory 6 (UDI-6). Before the beginning of the game, the instruments were applied by individual interview for data collection and the pad was positioned. After the game, the pad was removed and weighed again. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: Half of the professional (50.0%) and amateur (55.6%) athletes have symptoms of urine loss during a competition. Objective urine loss was higher among professional athletes (4.5 ± 1.4 g) compared to amateur athletes (3.8 ± 1.4 g). There was a significant difference (P < .001) in objective urine loss between symptomatic (mean = 5.41, standard deviation [SD] = 0.8) and asymptomatic professional athletes (mean = 3.40, SD = 1.3). CONCLUSION: Self-report of urinary incontinence during the competition was common among professional and amateur athletes. However, objective urine loss was significantly higher among professional athletes.

ABSTRACT Conducting studies in different regions of the country can help to understand which factors are associated with the functional disability of the elderly, considering that this is an important health indicator and may contribute to interventions in this population, aiming to reduce the risk of future dependence, complication or establishment of chronic diseases and morbidities. This study aimed to verify the factors associated with the functional disability of elderly women participating in a physical activity program in Manaus/AM. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 416 elderly women who answered a questionnaire with information on functional disability (dependent variable) and independent variables: age, marital status, monthly income, schooling, retirement, medication use, body mass index, depression symptoms, self-reported illness, and health perception. The overall prevalence of functional disability was 25.7%, which was associated with age ≥80 (OR=2.34, IC95%=1.11-4,94), incomplete primary school (OR=3.22, IC95%=1.24-8.35) and complete primary (OR=3.24, IC95%=1.40-7.50), overweight (OR=2.77, IC95%=1.69-4.54), presence of depression symptoms (OR=4.40, IC95%=1.48-13.07), arthrosis (OR=3.31, IC95%=1.80-5.73), rheumatoid arthritis (OR=2.84, IC95%=1.57-5.15) and negative health perception (OR=3.04, IC95%=1.19-7.78). It was concluded that functional disability was associated with modifiable health factors (scholling, overweight, depression syntoms) ans non modifiable (age, arthritis and arthrosis).
A prevalência geral de IF foi de 25,7%, a qual esteve associada à idade ≥80 (OR=2.34, IC95%=1.11-4,94), ensino fundamental incompleto (OR=3,22, IC95%=1,24-8,35) e fundamental completo (OR=3,24, IC95%=1,40-7,50), sobrepeso (OR=2,77, IC95%=1,69-4,54), presença de sintomas depressivos (OR=4.40, IC95%=1.48-13.07), artrose (OR=3.31, IC95%=1.80-5.73), artrite reumatoide (OR=2.84, IC95%=1.57-5.15) e percepção de saúde negativa (OR=3.04, IC95%=1.19-7.78).
ABSTRACT
Aim: to compare the handgrip strength (HGS) and the maximum walking speed according to the level of physical activity (PA) and sex in elderly centenarians. Method: 48 centenarians (101.73 ± 2.52 years old) participated in the study, 29 women and 19 men. Sociodemographic, health, and lifestyle data were analyzed using the Multidimensional Assessment Protocol for the Elderly Centenary PAMIC. HGS was measured using a dynamometer, PA utilizing a pedometer, and the maximum gait speed through a physical test. Those who reached at least 1,000 steps/week were classified as active centenarians and those below this value as insufficiently active. The level of significance adopted was 5%. Results: centenarians of the male sex had higher HGS on the right (17.47 ± 6.94kgf) and left (16.63 ± 6.28kgf) when compared to the female sex (11.90 ± 4.84kgf; 10.48 ± 5, 00kgf) (p<0.05). When analyzed according to PA, active centenarians had a higher right (22.86 ± 8.01 kgf) and left (22.14 ± 5.55kgf) HGS compared to insufficiently active (14.33 ± 3.82kgf; 13, 42 ± 4.14 kgf) (p <0.05). For females, the right HGS was higher in active centenarians (15.75 ± 4.68kgf) when compared to insufficiently active women (10.43 ± 4.12kgf) (p = 0.006). In the left HGS, the active group had a higher mean value (14.00 ± 4.63 kgf) compared to the insufficiently active group (9.14 ± 4.55kgf) (p = 0.017). The maximum gait speed did not show any significant difference according to PA or the gender of the elderly. Conclusion: the study shows that physical activity is closely related to better values of HGS, indicating that active elderly centenarians have better overall body strength.(AU)

ABSTRACT Introduction Body balance is one of the most important factors related to falls, quality of life, and independence, and its evaluation is therefore important. Objective To establish reference values for balance tests in physically active older women from different age groups. Methods The sample consisted of 192 physically active women aged 60 to 79 years who were submitted to the following tests: timed up and go (TUG), one-leg stand (OLS), five-repetition chair stand (CS-5), functional reach (FR), and tandem stand test (TST). Descriptive statistics (percentile analysis) and the Mann-Whitney U test were used. Results In older women aged 60 to 69 years, the values indicating "good" balance were a score less than 5.7 s in the TUG, achieving 30 s of OLS, performing the CS-5 test in less than 8.5 s, and a result greater than 35.5 cm in the FR test. In older women aged 70 to 79 years, the values indicating "good" balance were a score less than 5.9 s in the TUG, achieving 30 s of OLS, performing the CS-5 in less than 8.5 s, and a result greater than 33 cm in the FR test. In the TST, most of the physically active subjects achieved the ceiling performance. Conclusion The reference values obtained are similar to or better than those reported in the literature. The use of the TST is not recommended for physically active older women because of its low discriminatory power in this group. Level of evidence III; Study of non consecutive patients; without consistently applied reference ''gold'' standard.
