ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries results from an ecologic shift within the dental biofilm from a balanced population of microorganisms to an acidogenic, aciduric, and cariogenic microbiological population developed and maintained by frequent consumption of fermentable dietary carbohydrates. Total caries removal (TCR) of deep lesion may result in pulpal exposure requiring more invasive treatment. Hence, current pediatric dentistry has shifted to minimally invasive treatment that avoids more complex, time-consuming procedure, and the child's discomfort. AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare clinical performance and radiographic changes after complete and incomplete caries removal procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 60 primary molars in children aged 6-9 years. Selected 60 primary molars were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 (PCR): infected dentin was removed, while the affected dentin was maintained on the pulpal wall. Group 2 (TCR): both infected and affected dentin were removed through low-speed carbide bur and hand excavator. Teeth were evaluated at 4 and 6 months clinically and radiographically. RESULTS: The proportion was compared using Fisher's exact test. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 21 was used for analysis. The level of significance was kept at 5%. CONCLUSION: The clinical and radiographic success rates of ICR and CCR in primary teeth with deep carious lesions were high and did not differ significantly, indicating that the retention of carious dentin does not interfere with pulp vitality. Thus, ICR is a reliable minimally invasive approach that might replace the CCR in primary teeth when correctly indicated.

ABSTRACT

A preferable choice of material offers superior resistance against micro-leakage for clinical applications in preventing dental caries in pits and fissures is of interest. A total of 45 extracted human premolars were cleaned, stored in a saline solution, and randomly divided into three groups, each intended for treatment with one of the sealants: Fuzi VII, ClinPro, and Embrace Wetbond. The application of the sealants followed the manufacturers' instructions strictly. The teeth were subjected to thermal cycling to simulate oral conditions. Marginal micro-leakage was then assessed by dye penetration method using a 0.5% methylene blue dye. Teeth were sectioned, and dye penetration was measured under a stereomicroscope. The results showed that all the tested materials exhibited some degree of micro-leakage. Within the limitations of this In vitro study, it was concluded that Embrace Wetbond exhibited superior performance in terms of minimizing marginal micro-leakage among the tested pit and fissure sealants.

ABSTRACT

Triclosan (TCS), an antimicrobial additive in various personal and health care products, has been widely detected in aquatic environment around the world. The present study investigated the impacts of TCS in the gills of the fish, Cyprinus carpio employing histopathological, biochemical, molecular docking and simulation analysis. The 96 h LC50 value of TCS in C. carpio was found to be 0.968 mg/L. Fish were exposed to 1/1000th (1 µg/L), 1/100th (10 µg/L), and 1/10th (100 µg/L) of 96 h LC50 value for a period of 28 days. The histopathological alterations observed in the gills were hypertrophy, hyperplasia, edematous swellings, and fusion of secondary lamellae in TCS exposed groups. The severity of these alterations increased with both the concentration as well as the duration of exposure. The present study revealed that the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, and reduced glutathione content decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in both concentration and duration dependent manner. However, a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the activity of the metabolic enzymes such as acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase was observed in all three exposure concentrations of TCS from 7 to 28 days. The activity of acetylcholinesterase declined significantly (p < 0.05) from 7 to 28 days whereas the content of acetylcholine increased significantly at the end of 28 day. The experimental results were further confirmed by molecular docking and simulation analysis that showed strong binding of TCS with acetylcholinesterase enzyme. The study revealed that long-term exposure to sublethal concentrations of TCS can lead to severe physiological and histopathological alterations in the fish.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate alterations in taste and smell perceptions among non-head and neck cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, aiming to identify factors influencing these changes. METHODS: A cohort of 70 non-head and neck cancer patients undergoing one to four cycles or more than four cycles, over a six-month period, from oncology outpatient clinics was recruited. Participants completed structured taste and smell questionnaires with assistance from interviewers. Demographic data, recurrence history, chemotherapy cycles, drug regimens, and taste and smell perceptions were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 46.5 years, with a predominance of females (81.4%) and breast cancer cases (42.9%). Taste changes were more prevalent (62.9%) than smell changes (32.9%) post chemotherapy, particularly among those on combination drug regimens. Salty taste alterations were the most common (30.0%), followed by sweet taste (22.9%) and sour/bitter tastes (14.3%). Moreover, 38.57% of patients reported experiencing dysgeusia, while 30% noted the occurrence of parosmia post chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: Chemotherapy-induced alterations in taste and smell significantly impact the quality of life and nutritional status of cancer patients. Despite often being overlooked, these changes warrant increased attention in oncological practice to inform treatment decisions and enhance symptom management, particularly in palliative care settings. Further research is needed to explore the implications of chemosensory alterations on patient outcomes and treatment strategies.

Introduction Anxiety is an emotion representing apprehension towards an unknown stimulus or situation. Rubber dam application during dental procedures in children makes the treatment more comfortable and acceptable as it gives them a psychological feeling that treatment is being carried out outside the oral cavity. The prime objective of this study was to evaluate and compare physiological parameters, which include pulse rate, arterial oxygen saturation level, blood pressure, and respiratory rate before and after rubber dam isolation. Material and methods The study consisted of 30 children patients of 7-10 years, comprised of 14 females and 16 males with a mean age of 8.15 ± 0.93 years. The study was a 'split mouth' clinical design study, where 60 sites in 30 patients (two sites in each patient) were used. The selected sites were divided into two groups by a convenience sampling method and were categorized as Group-I (control group - 30 sites were treated with pit and fissure sealants under cotton roll and saliva ejectors on mandibular right permanent first molar) and Group-II (study group - 30 sites were treated with pit and fissure sealants underrubber dam isolation on mandibular left permanent first molar). Results Rubber dam application reduced different physiological parameters of stress such as pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and respiratory rate at different intervals from the baseline values. Rubber dam and cotton roll applications have no significant effects on oxygen saturation levels at different intervals in healthy individuals. From statistical analysis, it was evident that a statistically significant difference was evident between the control and experimental groups (P value < 0.005). Conclusion It is confirmed in this study that rubber dam reduces different physiologic parameters of stress. After the application of the rubber dam, children's pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and respiratory rate were reduced. Clinical significance The study highlights the imperative role of rubber dam isolation in improving dental and medical effectiveness. In addendum to this, our research promotes the clinical use of rubber dams in pediatric dentistry.

ABSTRACT

Aims: Initiating smoking in early adolescence results in challenges with smoking cessation and is associated with high risk of cardiovascular disease. Recently, the initiation of smoking has transitioned from adolescence to young adulthood. However, there are few reports on the impact of initiating smoking at a later age. This study investigated the impact of the age of smoking initiation on nicotine dependency, smoking cessation rates, and cardiovascular risk factors, using a cut-off point of 20 years, within the Japanese population. Methods and results: This retrospective cohort study encompassed 1382 smokers who sought smoking cessation treatment at Kyoto Medical Centre Hospital between 2007 and 2019. Clinical indicators were evaluated by adjusting for age at the time of hospital visit and sex. The smoking cessation rate was further adjusted for treatment medication. The group with a smoking initiation age of <20 years reported a higher number of cigarettes/day (P = 0.002), higher respiratory carbon monoxide levels (P < 0.001), a higher Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) score (P < 0.001), and a higher Self-rating Depression Scale score (P = 0.014). They also reported lower diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.020) and a lower successful smoking cessation rate [odds ratio: 0.736, 95% confidence interval (0.569, 0.951)] than the group with a smoking initiation age of ≥20 years. When smokers were divided into four groups based on the age they started smoking, the FTND score for those who started at 20-21 years was significantly higher than the score for those who started at 22 years or older. Conclusion: In young adulthood, initiating smoking later (beyond 20 years old) was associated with lower nicotine dependency and fewer depressive tendencies, as well as a higher success rate in smoking cessation among Japanese smokers. The results might suggest that raising the legal smoking initiation age from 20 to 22 years old or older could be effective in reducing nicotine dependency in smokers.

ABSTRACT

The study was performed to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of Benfotiamine (BFT) in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced Parkinson's disease (PD) in rats. The rats were given daily doses of BFT (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg) through oral administration for 42 days. The rats were given a single bilateral dosage of MPTP (0.1 mg/nostril) intranasally once before the drug treatment to induce PD. On day 42, the animals were subjected to various behavioral paradigms. Post-treatment with BFT for 42 days significantly improved the motor and nonmotor fluctuations of MPTP. The results demonstrated that treatment with BFT ameliorated MPTP-induced disorders in behavior, body balance, and dopamine levels in the mid-brain. Among the post-treated groups, a high dose of BFT was the most effective treatment. Mean values are indicated in ±SEM, n = 5***(p < 0.001) when compared with the vehicle control, n = 5 ### (p < 0.001) when compared with the disease control; (p < 0.001) when compared with the BFT per se; (p < 0.001) when compared with the low dose of BFT; (p < 0.001) when compared with the high dose of BFT. Our finding suggests that BFT contributed to superior antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory and could be a novel therapeutic method for PD management. In conclusion, BFT could be a potential drug candidate for curbing and preventing PD.

ABSTRACT

The bacterial fish pathogen Edwardsiella tarda causes heavy stock mortality, severely hampering fish production, resulting in great economic loss to the farming industry. The first biological barriers that confer immune protection against pathogen entry are the fish mucosal surfaces. The present study was undertaken to investigate the influence of E. tarda on certain enzymatic and non-enzymatic parameters in the skin mucous secretions of the fish Cirrhinus mrigala using spectrophotometry and zymography. Fish were randomly divided into three groups: control, vehicle control, and infected. A sublethal dose of E. tarda (2.2 × 106 CFU/fish) suspended in 50 µL of PBS was injected intra-peritoneally at 0 day (d). Subsequently, mucus samples were collected at 2 d, 4 d, 6 d and 8 d post-infection. The activities of lysozyme (LYZ), protease (PROT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (PER), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) decreased significantly in the skin mucus of the challenged fish, indicating the suppressed immune system and decreased antioxidant capacity of C. mrigala to E. tarda infection. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) and total nitrate-nitrite were significantly higher at several time points post-infection, suggesting that physiological functions have been impaired following pathogen challenge. The present findings could be relevant for fish aquaculture and underline the importance of skin mucus not only for assessing fish immune status but also for identifying early warning signals of disease caused by pathogens.

Diabetes is a chronic disease requiring long-term management. Poorly controlled diabetes is associated with reduced quality of life and micro- and macro-vascular complications. Community pharmacists have a role in supporting people with diabetes to better address their condition and reduce their risk of diabetes-related illness. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the attitudes, practices, and confidence of community pharmacists in Japan and Ireland on the care of people with diabetes. A cross-sectional survey of community pharmacists in Ireland (388 respondents) and Japan (144 respondents) was conducted to assess their attitudes, practices, confidence, and other characteristics linked to diabetes management. A Likert scale was utilized, with a range of strongly agree to strongly disagree. The study reported that Japanese pharmacists have lower levels of practice (p<0.004), confidence, trust by patients, job satisfaction, concern with patients, and knowledge (all p<0.001) regarding diabetes management than Irish pharmacists. Although there was no significant difference in the attitude of pharmacists in both countries, the results show almost similar attitudes toward diabetes management, indicating their willingness to support people with diabetes. These results demonstrated less confidence in diabetes management and less practice of diabetes management care among Japanese pharmacists than Irish pharmacists. The results can be used to identify pharmacist education needs and develop training programs in diabetes management for pharmacists in Japan and Ireland.

ABSTRACT

India is native to many tribal communities: Bharia (Madhya Pradesh), Bihl (Rajasthan), Santhal (Bihar, Jharkhand), Bodo (Assam, West Bengal), and many more. They reside in isolated geographical regions, which poses challenges in reaching out to them. In addition, they still have firm beliefs and taboos regarding menstruation. Knowledge about menstrual health and hygiene is one of the most important aspects of tribal health. Therefore, it is important to synthesize the results of menstrual hygiene data from the Indian tribal population. We have calculated the pooled prevalence of sanitary pad use, dustbin disposal, and hygienic reuse of menstrual materials. Online databases, namely PubMed, Cochrane Central, CINAHL, Pan African Journals, EBSCO, and Google Scholar, were searched. After the removal of duplicates, a quality check, and screening of cross-references, 19 articles were selected for final review. Statistical analysis was done by Revman 5.4 and STATA 17.0. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. PRISMA guidelines were followed. The protocol registration number was CRD42022331376. This is a non-funded article. The pooled prevalence of sanitary pad use in Indian tribal females was 2% (95% CI 1 to 3). The pooled prevalence of dustbin disposal of menstrual material was 1% (95% CI: 0.00 to 0.02). The pooled prevalence of hygienic reuse of menstrual materials was 1%. Sanitary menstrual hygiene practices are very less prevalent in Indian tribal females. Awareness programs and tribal health policies need to be accelerated for the promotion of menstrual hygiene. Also, literature on the use, disposal, and storage of menstrual adsorbents is scarce in Indian tribes. Health research in this area needs to be emphasized.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, the epidermis of the hill stream fish Hara hara has been investigated employing scanning electron microscope, histology, histochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques. The epidermis is characteristically differentiated into plaques separated from each other by deep furrows. In plaques, the epidermis is keratinized. In contrast, in furrows, it is mucogenic. Surface epithelial cells in plaques get modified into characteristic spine-like unculi. At the distal ends of these unculi, we find tree-like branched dendritic structures. The keratinized epithelial cells in plaques together with unculi frequently exfoliate at the surface. The epidermis in furrows is equipped with secretory glandular cells, that is, mucous goblet cells, sacciform cells and club cells; and sensory structures, that is, the taste buds. These glandular cells are involved in the elaboration of different types of carbohydrate and protein moieties. Further, in the epidermis of both, plaques and furrows, melanophores are frequently interspersed between the epithelial cells. In the plaque epidermis, in addition to melanophores, melanin granules are observed in epithelial cells undergoing keratinization as well as in those sloughing at the surface. Sloughing of keratinized epithelial cells together with spine-like unculi at the surface of the plaques; the secretions of the glandular cells, the distribution of melanophore and the taste buds interspersed between the epithelial cells and the presence of melanin granules in the keratinized epithelial cells have been associated with different functional roles. These include hydrodynamic advantage, protection from mechanical stress, pathogens, UV radiation, localization of food accurately and so on in relation to the natural habitat of the fish.

Aspirin is one of the emerging pharmaceutical contaminants in the aquatic environment and thus it could impart toxicity to non-target organisms including fish. The present study aims to investigate the biochemical and histopathological alterations in the liver of the fish, Labeo rohita exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of aspirin (1, 10, and 100 µg/L) for 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. The biochemical investigation revealed a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase; and reduced glutathione content in a concentration and duration dependent manner. Further, the decrease in the activity of superoxide dismutase was in a dose dependent manner. The activity of glutathione-s-transferase, however, increased significantly (p < 0.05) in a dose dependent manner. The lipid peroxidation and total nitrate content showed a significant (p < 0.05) increase in a dose and duration dependent manner. The metabolic enzymes such as acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase showed a significant (p < 0.05) increase in all three exposure concentrations and durations. The histopathological alterations in the liver such as vacuolization, hypertrophy of the hepatocytes, nuclear degenerative changes, and bile stagnosis increased in a dose and duration dependent manner. Hence, the present study concludes aspirin has a toxic impact on fish, which is evidenced by its profound effect on biochemical parameters and histopathological analysis. These can be employed as potential indicators of pharmaceutical toxicity in the field of environmental biomonitoring.

Introduction Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been broadly recognized as the syndrome of hyperglycemia leading to various macro- and microvascular complications. The different physiological systems that have been identified as a target of these injurious effects of hyperglycemia are the excretory system, ocular system, central nervous system, and cardiovascular system. To date, not much focus has been given to the respiratory system as a possible target for the deleterious effect of hyperglycemia. Objective To assess the pulmonary functions in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and compare them with age and sex-matched healthy controls. Methods This study was conducted on one hundred and twenty-five patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and a comparative number of age and sex-matched non-diabetic individuals (control group) who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. RMS Helios 401 computerized spirometer was used to assess pulmonary functions. Results The mean age of the control group and type 2 diabetics were 50.96±6.85 and 51.47±8.43 years, respectively. The results of the present study showed significantly lower values of FVC, FEV1, FEF25-75%, and MVV among diabetic subjects as compared to controls (<0.05). Conclusion We found that pulmonary function parameters in diabetic subjects were consistently lower than in healthy controls. This reduction in lung function is probably a chronic complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

ABSTRACT

This study was done to investigate the possible nephroprotective effect of an ethanolic root extract of Polyalthia Longifolia (PL) on vancomycin-induced nephrotoxicity using curative and protective models. Vancomycin (150 mg/kg, intravenous) was given to healthy Wistar albino rats in the curative model before the start of treatment, whereas the protective group received vancomycin at the conclusion of the 10-day treatment procedure. Animals were divided into six groups for both models; group I served as the normal control, while groups II, III, IV, V, and VI were kept as toxic control, standard (selenium, 6 mg/kg), LDPL (low dose of PL 200 mg/kg), HDPL (high dose of PL 400 mg/kg), and HDPL + selenium (interactive) groups, respectively. Renal biomarkers [(uric acid, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum proteins], and blood electrolyte levels were measured for all tested groups. When compared to the vancomycin group, the HDPL significantly (p < 0.01) showed greater effectiveness in lowering the BUN, potassium, and calcium levels. Additionally, in the curative model, there was a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the blood levels of uric acid, creatinine, BUN, potassium, and calcium in the animals who received the combination of selenium and HDPL. Both LDPL and HDPL did not provide any distinguishable effect in the protective model, but groups that received HDPL with selenium did provide detectable protection by significantly lowering their levels of uric acid, BUN, serum potassium, and total serum protein in comparison to the vancomycin control group. These findings indicate that, whether administered before or after renal damage is induced, the Polyalthia longifolia root extract provided only modest protection to nephrons, which require selenium support to prevent vancomycin-induced kidney damage.

The effect of aloin on mucosal immune response and disease resistance was elucidated in Labeo rohita infected with the bacterial fish pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila. Fishes were divided into four groups: (i) control, (ii) vehicle control, (iii) bacteria infected and (iv) bacteria infected and aloin treated. Fish were intraperitoneally injected with A. hydrophila suspension at the dose of 2 × 106 CFU/fish at 0 day (d). Following bacterial injection at 0 d, fish were treated with aloin at a dose of 1 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally at an interval of 24 h for 4 consecutive days. Mucus collected from fish of each group was analyzed at 2 d, 4 d, 6 d, 8 d and 10 d. In bacteria-infected fish, a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in the activity of certain enzymatic and non-enzymatic immune parameters was observed. The activity of these immune parameters showed a gradual recovery on administration of aloin in bacteria-infected fish. Cumulative mortality was also found to be low in the aloin-treated group as compared to that in the infected group. Thus, aloin could act as an immunostimulant and play a protective role against disease caused by bacteria.

ABSTRACT

In recent studies, fish are heavily used as biomarkers of aquatic pollution, and heavy metals are among the main contributors to water pollution. In the present study, we investigated histopathological changes along with alterations in localization and activity of enzymes alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (PER) and Na+/K+-ATPase in the gill tissues of Indian stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis exposed to two different concentrations (0.4 and 4 mg/L) of lead nitrate for 15 days. Histopathological examination of gill tissues revealed hypertrophy and swelling of epithelial cells, the fusion of epithelium of gill filaments and secondary lamellae, and alteration of secondary lamellae structure. Biochemical assays and histochemical localization show a pronounced effect on enzyme alkaline phosphatase activity and acid phosphatase in the gills of both groups of treated groups. In contrast, a significant decrease was noticed in the enzymatic response including catalase and peroxidase activity. Being a vital organ gill reflects the fish's physiological condition and the severity of the contamination in the surrounding environment. Gill is also the prime organ of osmoregulation in teleosts. Decreased activity of Na+/K+-ATPase suggests lead as a potent inhibitor of Na+/K+-ATPase that causes sodium hyperregulation. Alteration in the activity of metabolic enzymes reflects the level of tissue damage and metabolic disruption. At the same time, the increased activity of antioxidant enzymes states the condition of oxidative stress. Haematological parameters also altered with the lead nitrate exposure, reflecting metal toxicity and immune response against it. Meanwhile, this study also provides a potential use of H. fossilis as a biomarker for aquatic pollution.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is associated with the deteriorating health of the gingiva and periodontium. The long-term beneficial effects of smoking cessation on oral health are well known. However, the effects of short-term smoking cessation on gingival bleeding and periodontal pocket depth are unknown. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of short-term smoking cessation on gingival bleeding and periodontal pocket depth. METHODS: Dentate smokers with a mean age of 56.9 ± 14.4 years at an outpatient smoking cessation clinic participated in this study. A professional dentist checked the periodontal pocket depth and gingival bleeding. Patients visited the smoking cessation clinic on their first visit and 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks (three months). The gingival assessment was re-performed in those who succeeded in smoking cessation 3 months after the baseline. RESULTS: The baseline data of 83 patients showed that an increase in pocket depth was associated with increasing age and the amount of smoking. A significant increase in gingival bleeding (p = .031) and increase in pocket depth (p = .046) were observed 3 months after the baseline in patients who successfully quit smoking (n = 14). CONCLUSION: Short-term smoking cessation increased periodontal pocket depth and gingival bleeding. These findings may reflect healing processes that occur in the healthy gingiva. IMPLICATIONS: Study findings will be useful to advise patients during smoking cessation programs. Dentists can inform patients that an initial increase in gingival bleeding and pocket depth could be associated with smoking cessation. Such advice will prevent patients from any apprehension that may cause them to recommence smoking.

ABSTRACT

There is an extensive debate on the neurological consequences of 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and its impact on Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, which seems to puzzle neurologists. Links between viral infections and PD have long been suspected and studied, but the exact relationship remains elusive. Since severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) enters the brain through multiple routes and has a direct impact on the brain, cumulative damage occurs due to the activation of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. SARS-CoV-2 seems to aggravate PD due to its effects on α-synuclein, mitochondrial dysfunction, and dopamine depletion. A few studies have even highlighted the higher vulnerability of PD patients to COVID-19. The sudden dramatic change in lifestyle caused by the pandemic and the widespread lockdowns that were implemented have added to the hidden sorrows of PD patients, as they already have a compromised mechanism for coping with stress. This review summarizes insights from basic science and the clinical effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the human brain, with a specific focus on PD.

BACKGROUND: The nasal cycle is one of the many cyclic events in a human being. Nasal airflow is greater in one nostril at any given point in time and this alternates between right and left nostrils over time. Its periodicity ranges from 25 min to 8 h. This alteration has been known to be controlled by the autonomic nervous system. The current study was designed to assess the effect of nasal dominance during rest on pulmonary function parameters and heart rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was done on 35 apparently healthy individuals of the age group of 18-30 years. Based on a cold mirror test, the participants were categorized into two groups of right nasal dominance (RND) and left nasal dominance (LND). The parameters recorded were forced expiratory volume in the first sec (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow rate, forced expiratory flow between 25%-75%, SpO2, and pulse rate. Data were expressed as mean ± standard deviation and were analyzed using SPSS version 20. RESULTS: All pulmonary function parameters exhibited higher values in RND participants compared to LND participants and the difference was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Nasal dominance has a measurable effect on pulmonary functions and heart rate hence emphasizing the role of autonomic control of airways. This influence can be used as adjuvant therapy for certain disorders.

Several new tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs), have become highly prevalent in Japan. As safety data continues to evolve, healthcare providers are considered important sources for product use, yet little is known about provider knowledge or self-efficacy to counsel patient about novel tobacco product use. This cross-sectional study used data from a Japanese Association of Smoking Control Science (JASCS) online survey of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and public health practitioners (N = 277) to assess provider knowledge of novel tobacco products and self-efficacy to counsel patients about product use. Correlates of knowledge and self-efficacy were also assessed. More than half the sample had received previous training in treating tobacco use, but 62% of respondents had no knowledge of HTPs; 80% of respondents indicated that they occasionally or always provide smoking cessation support. Overall knowledge of HTPs was low (41.4% correct) with higher knowledge for HTPs containing nicotine (89% correct) vs. HTPs emitting no carbon monoxide (25%). Self-efficacy to counsel patients about novel tobacco products was low on a scale ranging from 10 to 70 (Mean = 31.2; Standard Deviation = 16.7). Greater knowledge of HTPs was associated with male gender, higher rates of training at JASCS and previous learning about HTPs at JASCS. (p < 0.05). The results suggested that healthcare providers' knowledge and self-efficacy regarding novel tobacco products remains low in Japan, but additional training may improve it.
