ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The incidence of an elongated styloid process (SP) and average length and diameter of SP have not been reported using Japanese cadavers. Data on the female-to-male ratio of an elongated SP vary. We calculated the average length and diameter of SP in Japanese cadavers and compared SP lengths between sexes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven sides (right and left of bodies) in males and 51 sides in females were analysed. Measurements were obtained from the inferior external acoustic meatus to the distal tip of the SP. SP diameters at the proximal base, midpoint, and distal tip were measured. SP > 30 mm was considered elongated. We used Welch's t-test for the statistical analysis. Fisher's exact two-tailed test was also performed to analyse the female-to-male elongation ratio. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Styloid process elongation prevalence was 29.5% in our sample. The average full length was 27.04 ± 7.88 mm overall; the average diameters were 5.41 ± 1.77 mm at the proximal base and 2.21 ± 1.22 mm at the distal tip. The average SP measurement was 26.81 ± 5.92 mm in males and 27.16 ± 8.79 mm in females (p = 0.74). The female-to-male ratio of SP elongation was 1:2 (p = 0.041). Females had longer full lengths of non-elongated SPs than males (p = 0.004). Males had wider diameters at the proximal base of elongated SPs than females (p = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS: The average length of SP was 27.04 mm in the Japanese population and about 30% of the Japanese presented SP ≥ 30 mm. Male had significantly higher rate than female among the SP ≥ 30 mm, and female had significantly longer SPs than male among the SP < 30 mm. Anatomically, the SP gets narrow as distally goes. Our anatomical findings would be beneficial to creating treatment plans, diagnosis, and surgery.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A gonadal artery originates as a branch of the abdominal aorta and renal artery inferior to the level of origin of the renal arteries. Variations in multiple right testicular arteries (RTAs) arising from the abdominal aorta are common. We aimed to re-evaluate the unusual courses of gonadal arteries with a single common trunk in relation to the inferior vena cava and left renal vein and explain the developmental anatomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The observational cross-sectional study was performed on 54 Japanese adult cadavers (29 men and 25 women). We examined the literature and developed embryological hypotheses on the single common trunk of the gonadal artery. RESULTS: The gonadal artery, testicular artery, and ovarian artery arose from the abdominal aorta in 93.1%, 96.3%, and 89.6% of cases, respectively, and from the renal artery in 4.9%, 3.7%, and 6.3% of cases, respectively. We found two rare variations in the RTAs observed during the routine dissection of two male cadavers; in these two cases, a single common trunk of the RTAs originated from the abdominal aorta. A single common trunk was found in 3.7% of cadavers, 2.0% of sides, and 2.0% of arteries in the gonadal artery and in 6.9% of cadavers, 3.8% of sides, and 3.7% of arteries in the testicular artery. All cases of the single common trunk, including those in past reports, were observed only in men. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of the variations in RTAs has important clinical consequences for invasive and non-invasive arterial procedures. In addition, this variation provides a new interpretation of the embryology of the gonadal artery. Variations similar to our findings have not been previously reported. Therefore, different variations concerning the RTA should be considered during surgical and non-surgical evaluations.

ABSTRACT

Some colon cancer (CC) patients present synchronous cancers at diagnosis and others develop metachronous neoplasms, but the risk factors are unclear for non-hereditary CC. We showed previously that global DNA demethylation increased with aging and correlated with genomic damage in CC, and we show now that preferentially associates to CCs with wild-type p53. This study aimed to elucidate the extent of DNA hypomethylation in patients with single and multiple CC, its relationship with aging, and its potential as predictive tool. We compared by real-time methylation-specific PCR the relative demethylation level (RDL) of long interspersed nucleotide element-1 (LINE-1) sequences in matched cancer tissues and non-cancerous colonic mucosa (NCM) from patients with single and multiple right-sided CCs. Although no RDL difference was found in NCM from single CC patients and healthy volunteers (P=0.5), there was more demethylation (higher RDL) in NCM from synchronous cancer patients (P=1.1 × 10(-5)) multiple CCs also were more demethylated than single CCs (P=0.0014). High NCM demethylation was predictive for metachronous neoplasms (P=0.003). In multivariate logistic regression analyses RDL was the only independent predictor for metachronous (P=0.02) and multiple (P=4.9 × 10(-5)) tumors. The higher LINE-1 demethylation in NCM from patients with multiple (synchronous and metachronous) tumors (P=9.6 × 10(-7)) was also very significant in patients with tumors without (P=3.8 × 10(-6)), but not with (P=0.16) microsatellite instability. NCM demethylation increased with aging in patients with single tumors, but decreased in those with multiple tumors. Moreover, the demethylation difference between patients with single vs multiple tumors appeared higher in younger (P=3.6 × 10(-4)) than in older (P=0.0016) patients. These results predict that LINE-1 hypomethylation in NCM can be used as an epigenetic predictive biomarker for multiple CC risk. The stronger association of demethylation in NCM with multiple CC risk from younger patients also suggests an inherited predisposition for the apparent field cancerization effect of somatic demethylation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate the use of Alfaxan-CD as an intravenous anaesthetic in young cats. DESIGN: Thirty-five Domestic Short-hair cats aged from 3 to 12 months were admitted into the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital-Sydney for elective surgery. Anaesthesia was induced with Alfaxan-CD and maintained with isoflurane: 22 cats received no premedication and 13 cats received acepromazine (0.03 mg/kg) and butorphanol (0.3 mg/kg) subcutaneously 30 min prior to induction. Qualitative and quantitative data for induction and recovery were recorded. Physiological parameters were recorded at 0, 2 and 5 min post induction, and every 5 min thereafter until the end of the procedure. RESULTS: Intravenous injection of Alfaxan-CD resulted in rapid induction of anaesthesia with a mean time to intubation of 122 s. The mean dose of Alfaxan-CD used was 4.2 mg/kg in unpremedicated cats and 2.7 mg/kg in premedicated cats. All cats maintained a heart rate above 95 beats/min. No cat developed hypoxaemia. Hypercapnoea was detected in 4 cats and hypotension was observed in 18 cats. Time to extubation ranged from 1 to 9 min. The mean time to sternal recumbency for premedicated cats was 11 min; 77% of premedicated cats and 23% of unpremedicated cats had a recovery score of 1 or 2. CONCLUSION: Alfaxan-CD is an effective anaesthetic agent in young healthy cats, providing a smooth induction and rapid recovery. Cats that were premedicated with acepromazine and butorphanol prior to induction with Alfaxan-CD had better recovery scores than those that were not premedicated.

ABSTRACT

Tumor scintigraphy with 67Ga-citrate, 99mTc(V)-DMSA and 99mTc-MDP were performed on a patient with rare primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma. While 67Ga-citrate accumulation to the tumor was not recognized, 99mTc(V)-DMSA and 99mTc-MDP scintigraphy showed relatively intense localization of the tracers in the lesion, and were very useful in suggesting the characteristics of the tumor.

ABSTRACT

A charge-mosaic membrane was prepared from a pentablock copolymer of the BABCB type by selectively introducing anion and cation exchange groups into the microseparated phases. The three-layer lamellar structure of the starting pentablock copolymer film was not disturbed by the modifications. The membrane obtained was highly permeable only to sodium chloride in mixed aqueous solutions of sodium chloride and organic species of low molecular weight, such as sucrose. Marked pH-dependent permeabilities were also observed for amino acids.
