ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Burst strength study in porcine dural models and functional and histological study in rat dural models. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the sealing strength and biocompatibility of Alaska pollock-derived gelatin (ApGltn) and fibrin sealants in disrupted dural injuries. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Disruption of the dura mater occurs during spine surgery, leading to cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Fibrin sealant is usually applied to ruptured sites; however, it lacks sealing strength. A novel biocompatible sealant composed of ApGltn was recently demonstrated to have good burst strength and biocompatibility in the porcine aorta. METHODS: Ten porcine dura maters with central holes were covered with ApGltn and fibrin sealants (five samples per group). The maximum burst strength of each sealant was measured, and histological examination was performed after burst testing. Twenty-seven dura maters of male Wistar rats were used for functional and histopathological evaluations. The rats were treated with three surgical interventions: defect + ApGltn sealant; defect + fibrin sealant; defect alone (nine rats per group). Macroscopic confirmation of the sealant, hindlimb motor function analysis, and histopathological examination were performed at two, four, and eight weeks after the procedure. RESULTS: The maximum burst strength of the ApGltn sealant was ~4.4 times higher than that of the fibrin sealant (68.1±12.1 vs . 15.6±8.7 mmHg; P <0.001). Histological examination confirmed that the ApGltn sealant showed tight adhesion to the dural surface, whereas a gap was observed between the fibrin sealant and the dura mater. In the rat model, the ApGltn sealant resulted in spinal function and dural histological findings similar to those of the fibrin sealant. CONCLUSION: The ApGltn sealant had a higher sealing strength than, and comparable effect on dura regeneration with, the fibrin sealant.

ABSTRACT

A new series of transparent aerogels of biopolymer-polysiloxane double networks is reported. Biopolymer aerogels have attracted much attention from green and sustainable aspects but suffered from strong hydrophilicity and difficulty to make homogeneous structures in nanoscale; these drawbacks are overcome by compositing with a polysiloxane network. Alginate-polymethylsilsesquioxane aerogel has high optical transparency, water repellency, comparable superinsulation property and improved bending flexibility compared to pure polymethylsilsesquioxane aerogel. The nanoscale homogeneity is realized by separating the crosslinking steps for two networks in a sequential protocol: condensation of siloxane bonds and metal-crosslinking of biopolymer. The crosslinking order, biopolymer-first or siloxane-first, and universality/limitation of biopolymer-crosslinker pairs are discussed to construct fundamental chemistry of double network systems for their further application potentials.

ABSTRACT

The sixth-generation communication system (6G) is the next-generation communication system and is expected to be operational in 2030. The following areas will use 6G: the frequency band employed in 6G is expected to be 100 GHz or higher, necessitating additional reduction of the dielectric constant and dielectric loss in the substrate material. In this study, we examined the effects of compounding various phases of alumina with different shapes and crystal phases on the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of cyclo-olefin polymer (COP) compounds. It was confirmed that the smaller the particle size, the higher the effect on the dielectric loss. The dielectric loss decreased from 1.6 × 10-3 of COP to 1.2 × 10-3 when the smallest filler was added at 30 wt %.

ABSTRACT

Random forest regression was applied to optimize the melt-blending process of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) with poly(ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate-methyl acrylate) (E-GMA-MA) elastomer to improve the Charpy impact strength. A training dataset was constructed using four elastomers with different GMA and MA contents by varying the elastomer content up to 20 wt% and the screw rotation speed of the extruder up to 5000 rpm at a fixed barrel temperature of 300 °C. Besides the controlled parameters, the following measured parameters were incorporated into the descriptors for the regression: motor torque, polymer pressure, and polymer temperatures monitored by infrared-ray thermometers installed at four positions (T1 to T4) as well as the melt viscosity and elastomer particle diameter of the product. The regression without prior knowledge revealed that the polymer temperature T1 just after the first kneading block is an important parameter next to the elastomer content. High impact strength required high elastomer content and T1 below 320 °C. The polymer temperature T1 was much higher than the barrel temperature and increased with the screw speed due to the heat of shear. The overheating caused thermal degradation, leading to a decrease in the melt viscosity and an increase in the particle diameter at high screw speed. We thus reduced the barrel temperature to keep T1 around 310 °C. This increased the impact strength from 58.6 kJ m-2 as the maximum in the training dataset to 65.3 and 69.0 kJ m-2 at elastomer contents of 20 and 30 wt%, respectively.

ABSTRACT

The Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident in March of 2011 released substantial amounts of radionuclides into the environment. We collected 4,957 deciduous teeth formed in children before the Fukushima accident to obtain precise control data for teeth formed after the accident. Radioactivity was measured using imaging plates (IP) and epidemiologically assessed using multivariate regression analysis. Additionally, we measured 90Sr, 137Cs, and natural radionuclides which might be present in teeth. Epidemiological studies of IP showed that the amount of radioactivity in teeth from Fukushima prefecture was similar to that from reference prefectures. We found that artificial radionuclides of 90Sr and 137Cs, which were believed to have originated from past nuclear disasters, and natural radionuclides including 40 K and daughter nuclides in the 238U and 232Th series contributed to the generation of radioactivity in teeth. We also found no evidence to suggest that radionuclides originating from the FNPP accident significantly contaminated pre-existing teeth. This is the first large-scale investigation of radioactivity and radionuclides in teeth. The present findings will be indispensable for future studies of teeth formed after the FNPP accident, which will fall out over the next several years and might be more contaminated with radionuclides.

ABSTRACT

We investigated the internal contamination by radioactive cesium associated with the FDNPP accident, in the testes or uterus and ovaries of free-roaming cats (Felis silvestris catus), which were protected by volunteers in the Namie Town, Fukushima. A total of 253 samples (145 testes and 108 uterus and ovaries) obtained from adult cats and 15 fetuses from 3 pregnant female cats were measured. Free-roaming cats in Namie Town had a higher level of radioactive contamination in comparison to the control group in Tokyo, as the 134Cs + 137Cs activity concentration ranged from not detectable to 37,882 Bq kg-1 in adult cats. Furthermore, the radioactivity in the fetuses was almost comparable to those in their mother's uterus and ovaries. The radioactivity was also different between several cats protected in the same location, and there was no significant correlation with ambient dose-rates and activity concentrations in soil. Moreover, radioactive cesium levels in cats decreased with each year. Therefore, it is likely that decontamination work in Namie Town and its surroundings could affect radioactive cesium accumulation, and thus possibly reduce the internal radiation exposure of wildlife living in contaminated areas. It is hence necessary to continue radioactivity monitoring efforts for the residents living in Namie Town.

ABSTRACT

Since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, we have established an archive system of livestock and wild animals from the surrounding ex-evacuation zone. Wildlife within the alert zone have been exposed to low-dose-rate (LDR) radiation for a long continuous time. In this study, we analysed the morphological characteristics of the testes and in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacity of cryopreserved sperm of racoons from the ex-evacuation zone of the FDNPP accident. The radioactivity of caesium-137 (137 Cs) was measured by gamma-ray spectrometry, and the measured radioactivity concentration was 300-6,630 Bq/kg in the Fukushima raccoons. Notably, normal spermatogenesis was observed in the seminiferous tubules of the testes, with the germinal epithelium composed of a spermatogenic cell lineage with no evident ultrastructural alterations; freeze-thawing sperm penetration ability was confirmed using the interspecific zona pellucida-free mouse oocytes IVF assays. This study revealed that the chronic and LDR radiation exposure associated with the FDNPP accident had no adverse effect on the reproductive characteristics and functions of male raccoons.

ABSTRACT

A novel protein, soritesidine (SOR) with potent toxicity was isolated from the marine sponge Spongosorites sp. SOR exhibited wide range of toxicities over various organisms and cells including brine shrimp (Artemia salina) larvae, sea hare (Aplysia kurodai) eggs, mice, and cultured mammalian cells. Toxicities of SOR were extraordinary potent. It killed mice at 5 ng/mouse after intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection, and brine shrimp and at 0.34 µg/mL. Cytotoxicity for cultured mammalian cancer cell lines against HeLa and L1210 cells were determined to be 0.062 and 12.11 ng/mL, respectively. The SOR-containing fraction cleaved plasmid DNA in a metal ion dependent manner showing genotoxicity of SOR. Purified SOR exhibited molecular weight of 108.7 kDa in MALDI-TOF MS data and isoelectric point of approximately 4.5. N-terminal amino acid sequence up to the 25th residue was determined by Edman degradation. Internal amino acid sequences for fifteen peptides isolated from the enzyme digest of SOR were also determined. None of those amino acid sequences showed similarity to existing proteins, suggesting that SOR is a new proteinous toxin.

ABSTRACT

A flow-type cell was developed for measuring Compton scattering spectra of heat-sensitive aqueous solution. Compton scattering spectra of water and ethanol were measured in the region from ambient conditions to 623 K and 20 MPa. Compton profiles derived from measurement with the flow-type cell were comparable with those in the literature. Results obtained from the flow-type cell showed that delocalization of electronic charge density of water and ethanol at high temperatures occurred. Delocalization of the electronic charge density of ethanol was greater than that of water at high temperature, which is consistent with the prior works that use proton NMR chemical shifts to describe hydrogen bonding.

ABSTRACT

A laser-Doppler vibrometer was used to measure the vibration of a vibrating tube densimeter for measuring P-V-T data at high temperatures and pressures. The apparatus developed allowed the control of the residence time of the sample so that decomposition at high temperatures could be minimized. A function generator and piezoelectric crystal was used to excite the U-shaped tube in one of its normal modes of vibration. Densities of methanol-water mixtures are reported for at 673 K and 40 MPa with an uncertainty of 0.009 g/cm3.
