ABSTRACT

Embryogenic eyelid defects can be isolated or associated with malformative diseases, such as Tessier craniofacial clefts. We describe the exceptional coexistence of upper eyelid coloboma and lower eyelid dermolipoma in a 45-day-old infant with a Tessier no. 0-1 cleft. The surgical intervention carried out on this patient, which used a flap of subconjunctival choristoma and grafting of reshaped cutaneous and tarsal portions of a preauricular anlage, is presented as a technique for correcting congenital palpebral coloboma. Adoption of this technique allowed virtually complete repair of the defect and gave an acceptable functional and cosmetic result.

ABSTRACT

Homogeneous samples of La0.4Sr0.6CoO3-delta were obtained by the glycine nitrate process. The oxygen nonstoichiometry was determined from oxygen exchange measurements as a function of oxygen partial pressure (10(-4) bar < PO2 < 10(-2) bar) and temperature (300 degrees C < T< 900 degrees C). The chemical diffusion coefficient D was obtained from oxygen exchange measurements applying a stepwise variation of the oxygen partial pressure of the ambient atmosphere of a disk-shaped sample. The amount of oxygen absorbed or desorbed by the perovskite was analyzed as a function of time. Chemical diffusion data were evaluated using simplified and exact fitting procedures taking into account the surface exchange coefficient. Alternatively, galvanostatic polarization measurements were performed in a PO2-range between 10(-4) and 10(-2) bar to yield D and the ionic conductivity sigma(i) from the long time solution of the diffusion equation. Values for D from polarization measurements at T= 775 degrees C and from oxygen exchange measurements at T= 725 degrees C are in good agreement with each other. D and sigma(1) increase with increasing PO2 (10(-4) to 10(-2) bar). The ionic conductivity shows a maximum at 3-delta approximately 2.82 and decreases with decreasing oxygen content indicating the possible formation of vacancy ordered structures.

ABSTRACT

We report on a reciprocal translocation t(X;16)(q28;p12) detected in a newborn girl with clinical manifestations of partial trisomy 16p. A balanced translocation was found in the mother and in the maternal grandmother. Replication studies on lymphocytes and fibroblasts showed nonrandom X-inactivation in both the patient and her mother. In the mother, the derivative X (der(X)) was active, whereas the normal X was late replicating. In contrast, in the patient the der(X) was late replicating, and there was no spreading of X-inactivation onto the autosomal segment, thus giving an explanation for the full clinical picture of partial trisomy 16p.

ABSTRACT

Calcium antagonism of nifedipine, nitrendipine or nisoldipine prevented salt-induced hypertension, renovascular damage and mortality in Dahl salt-sensitive (S) rats. The calcium agonist BAY K 8644 accelerated the development of salt-induced hypertension in S rats. In some S rats on a low-salt diet BAY K 8644 induced renovascular damage without sustained hypertension. In stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) on a normal diet the natural appearance of stroke was correlated with an increased calcium content in brain and kidney tissue. Nimodipine prevented stroke and the increase in brain calcium content without affecting the high blood pressure. A similar protective effect without substantial influence on high blood pressure was achieved by bilateral parathyroidectomy. Hypertension-associated vascular damage does not necessarily depend on the systemic intravascular pressure. In malignant hypertension the deleterious calcium overload in tissues may be activated or inhibited independently of the regulation of arterial blood pressure.
