ABSTRACT

Novel binder designs are shown to be fruitful in improving the electrochemical performance of silicon (Si)-based anodes. However, issues with mechanical damage from dramatic volume change and poor lithium-ion (Li+) diffusion kinetics in Si-based materials still need to be addressed. Herein, an aqueous self-repairing borate-type binder (SBG) with a web-like architecture and high ionic conductivity is designed for Si and SiO electrodes. The 3D web-like architecture of the SBG binder enables uniform stress distribution, while its self-repairing ability promotes effective stress dissipation and mechanical damage repair, thereby enhancing the damage tolerance of the electrode. The tetracoordinate boron ions ( - BO 4 - $ - {\mathrm{BO}}_4^ - $ ) in the SBG binder boosts the Li transportation kinetics of Si-based electrodes. Based on dynamic covalent and ionic conductive boronic ester bonds, the diverse requirements of the binder, including uniform stress distribution, self-repairing ability, and high ionic conductivity, can be met by simple components. Consequently, the proposed straightforward multifunction design strategy for binders based on dynamic boron chemistry provides valuable insights into fabricating high-performance Si-based anodes.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Goji berry is a general term for various plant species in the genus Lycium. Goji has long been historically used in traditional Chinese medicines. Goji is a representative tonic medicine that has the effects of nourishing the liver and kidney and benefiting the essence and eyesight. It has been widely used in the treatment of various diseases, including tinnitus, impotence, spermatorrhea and blood deficiency, since ancient times. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This study aims to comprehensively summarize the quality evaluation methods of the main compounds in goji, as well as the current research status of the phenolamides in goji and their pharmacological effects, to explore the feasibility of using phenolamides as quality control markers and thus improve the quality and efficacy in goji. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant literature from PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, CNKI and other databases was comprehensively collected, screened and summarized. RESULTS: According to the collected literature, the quality evaluation markers of goji in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China are Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) and betaine. As a result of its structure complexity, only the total level of LBP can be determined, while betaine is not prominent in the pharmacological action of goji and lacks species distinctiveness. Neither of them can well explain the quality of goji. KuA and KuB are commonly used as quality evaluation markers of the Lycii cortex because of their high levels and suitable pharmacological activity. Goji is rich in polyphenols, carotenoids and alkaloids. Many studies have used the above compounds to establish quality evaluation methods but the results have not been satisfactory. Phenolamides have often been neglected in previous studies because of their low single compound levels and high separation difficulty. However, in recent years, the favorable pharmacological activities of phenolamides have been gradually recognized, and studies on goji phenolamides are greatly increasing. In addition, phenolamides have higher species distinctiveness than other compounds and can be combined with other compounds to better evaluate the quality of goji to improve its average quality. CONCLUSIONS: The phenolamides in the goji are rich and play a key role in antioxidation, anti-inflammation, neuroprotection and immunomodulation. As a result of their characteristics, it is suitable to evaluate the quality by quantitative analysis of multi-components by single-marker and fingerprint. This method can be combined with other techniques to improve the quality evaluation system of goji, which lays a foundation for their effectiveness and provides a reference for new quality evaluation methods of similar herbal medicines.

ABSTRACT

Ultrahigh-capacity silicon (Si) anodes are essential for the escalating energy demands driven by the booming e-transportation and energy storage field. However, their practical applications are strictly hampered by their intrinsically low electroconductivity, sluggish Li-ion diffusion, and undesirably large volume change. Herein, a high-performance Si anode, comprised of a modulated soft/hard coating of polyethylene glycol (PEG) (as Li-ion conductor) and polyaniline (PANI) (as electron conductor) on the surface of Si nanoparticles (NPs) through H-bonding network, is introduced. In this design, the abundant ─OH groups of soft PEG allow it to uniformly cover Si NPs while the hard PANI binds to PEG through its ─N─H group, thus constructing a tight connectin between Si and PEG-PANI (PP). Consequently, the elastic PP allows Si@PP to accommodate the huge volume expansion while possessing fine electronic/ionic conductivity. Therefore, the Si@PP anode exhibits a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 90.5% and a stable capacity of 1871 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 1 A g-1 with a retention of 85.7%. Additionally, the Si@PP anode also demonstrates a high areal capacity of 3.01 mAh cm-2 after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g-1 . This work reveals a scalable interface design of multi-layer multifunctional coatings for high-performance electrode materials in next-generation Li-ion batteries.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and related factors of myopia among school-aged children after COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Pudong New Area, Shanghai. PARTICIPANTS: 1722 children aged 7-9 randomly selected from 8 primary schools were screened from 1 February 2023 to 30 April 2023. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Children's height, weight and eye parameters were examined. Myopia was defined as a cycloplegic spherical equivalent ≤-0.50 dioptres in either eye. A vision-related behaviour questionnaire was applied to investigate the associations between myopia and its risk factors. RESULTS: Of the 1722 individuals enrolled, 25.6% (456) had myopia. After adjusting other characteristics, the following factors were associated with an increased rate of myopia: age (9 years vs 7 years, adjusted OR (AOR) 1.84, 95% CI 1.18 to 2.85, p=0.007), parental myopia status (both myopia vs none, AOR 5.66, 95% CI 3.71 to 8.63, p<0.001; one myopia vs none, AOR 2.92, 95% CI 1.93 to 4.42, p<0.001), reading books too close (yes vs no, AOR 1.58, 95% CI 1.20 to 2.08, p=0.001), writing with a tilted head (yes vs no, AOR 1.37, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.77, p=0.019), sleep patterns (early to bed late to rise vs early to bed early to rise, AOR 1.52, 95% CI 1.02 to 2.26, p=0.039). By contrast, a higher monthly household income and the habit of reading while lying down were associated with lower risk of myopia. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of myopia is of concern among young school-aged children after COVID-19. Correcting eye use behaviour and improving sleep habits may reduce myopia. Also, gender differences should be considered in prevention strategies for children's myopia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Regenerating gene (REG) family proteins play a pivotal role in cell proliferation, tissue regeneration, and tumor metastasis. Recent studies have concentrated on the role of REG proteins in pancreatic cancer, but the results remain controversial. In this study, a meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the precise diagnostic value of REG proteins in pancreatic cancer. METHODS: A search was conducted in PubMed, Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), and WANFANG Data up to May 5, 2021. The QUADAS-2 tool was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. The statistical analysis of the diagnostic tests was conducted using RevMan5 and Meta-Disc 1.4. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated from each eligible study. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 15 articles containing 796 patients and 584 controls. The pooled sensitivity was 0.71 (95% CI: 0.67 - 0.74), the pooled specificity was 0.73 (95% CI: 0.70 - 0.76), and the pooled DOR was 11.35 (95% CI: 5.92 - 21.77), respectively. The overall area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.84. Spearman's correlation coefficient was 0.34 (p = 0.221). For the subgroup analysis, the REG4 protein showed higher diagnostic accuracy compared with the other REG proteins. CONCLUSIONS: REG proteins have moderate diagnostic accuracy in pancreatic cancer. Further well-designed studies with larger sample sizes and clinical application are needed to validate the results of this meta-analysis.

ABSTRACT

Developing sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with high initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and long-term cycling stability is crucial to meet energy storage device requirements. Designing anode materials that could exhibit high ICE is a promising strategy to realize enhanced energy density in SIBs. A trifunctional network binder substantially improves the electrochemical performance and ICE, providing excellent mechanical properties and strong adhesion strength. A rationally designed electrode material and binder can achieve high ICE, long cycling performance, and excellent specific capacity. Here, a NiS/NiS2 heterostructure as an anode material and a trifunctional network binder (SA-g-PAM) are designed for SIBs. Unprecedently, the anode comprising of an SA-g-PAM binder achieved the highest ICE of 90.7% and remarkable cycling stability for 19000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g-1 and maintained the specific capacity of 482.3 mAh g-1 even after 19000 cycles. This exciting work provides an alternate direction to the battery industry for developing high-performance electrode materials and binders with high ICE and excellent cycling stability for energy storage devices.

INTRODUCTION: Influenza is a severe respiratory viral infection that causes significant morbidity and mortality, due to annual epidemics and unpredictable pandemics. With the extensive use of neuraminidase inhibitor (NAI) drugs, the influenza B virus has carried different drug-resistant mutations. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the prevalence of drug-resistant mutations of the influenza B virus. METHODOLOGY: Near full-length sequences of the neuraminidase (NA) region of all influenza B viruses from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2018, were downloaded from public databases GISAID and NCBI. Multiple sequence alignments were performed using Clustal Omega 1.2.4 software. Subsequently, phylogenetic trees were constructed by FastTree 2.1.11 and clustered by ClusterPickergui_1.2.3.JAR. Then, the major drug resistance sites and surrounding auxiliary sites were analyzed by Mega-X and Weblogo tools. RESULTS: Among the amino acid sequences of NA from 2006 to 2018, only Clust04 in 2018 carried a D197N mutation of the NA active site, while other drug resistance sites were conserved without mutation. According to the Weblogo analysis, a large number of N198, S295, K373, and K375 mutations were found in the amino acid residues at the auxiliary sites surrounding D197, N294, and R374. CONCLUSIONS: We found the D197N mutation in Clust04 of the 2018 influenza B virus, with a large number of N198, S295, K373, and K375 mutations in the helper sites around N197, N294, and R374 from 2006 to 2018. NA inhibitors are currently the only kind of specific antiviral agent for the influenza B virus, although these mutations cause mild NAIs resistance.

BACKGROUND: Historically, malaria due to Plasmodium vivax has been epidemic in Henan Province, China, with Anopheles sinensis as the main vector. The most effective measures to prevent malaria transmission are based on vector control through the use of insecticides. However, insecticides exert a strong selective pressure on mosquito populations for insecticide resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the susceptibility profile and population genetic characteristics of An. sinensis to provide basic data and scientific guidance for the study of resistance mechanisms and the control of An. sinensis in Henan Province. METHODS: Adult Anopheles mosquitoes were collected at sites near local farmers' sheepfolds, pigsties and/or cowsheds located in Pingqiao, Xiangfu, Xiangcheng and Tanghe counties/districts of Henan Province during July-September 2021 for insecticide susceptibility testing. Molecular identification of collected mosquitoes as belonging to genus Anopheles was by PCR, and the frequencies of mutations in the knockdown resistance gene (kdr) and acetylcholinesterase-1 gene (ace-1) were detected using gene amplification. The mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene was amplified in deltamethrin-resistant and deltamethrin-sensitive mosquitoes to analyze the genetic evolutionary relationship. RESULTS: A total of 1409 Anopheles mosquitoes were identified by molecular identification, of which 1334 (94.68%) were An. sinensis, 28 (1.99%) were An. yatsushiroensis, 43 (3.05%) were An. anthropophagus and four (0.28%) were An. belenrae. The 24-h mortality rates of An. sinensis in Pingqiao, Tanghe, Xiangcheng and Xiangfu counties/districts exposed to deltamethrin were 85.85%, 25.38%, 29.73% and 7.66%, respectively; to beta-cyfluthrin, 36.24%, 70.91%, 34.33% and 3.28%, respectively; to propoxur, 68.39%, 80.60%, 37.62% and 9.29%, respectively; and to malathion, 97.43%, 97.67%, 99.21% and 64.23%, respectively. One mutation, G119S, was detected in the ace-1 gene. The frequencies of the main genotypes were 84.21% of specimens collected in Xiangfu (G/S), 90.63% of speciments collected in Xiangcheng (G/G) and 2.44% of speciments collected in Tanghe (S/S). Significantly higher G119S allele frequencies were observed in both propoxur- and malathion-resistant mosquitoes than in their sensitive counterparts in the Tanghe population (P < 0.05). Three mutations, L1014F (41.38%), L1014C (9.15%) and L1014W (0.12%), were detected in the kdr gene. The genotypes with the highest frequency in the populations of An. sinensis in Xiangfu and Tanghe were the mutant TTT (F/F) and wild-type TTG (L/L), at 67.86% (57/84) and 74.29% (52/70), respectively. In Pingqiao and Xiangfu, higher frequencies of the L1014F allele and lower frequencies of the L1014C allele were observed in mosquitoes resistant for beta-cyfluthrin than in those which were sensitive for this insecticide (P < 0.05). The results of Tajima's D and of Fu and Li's D and F were not significantly negative (P > 0.10), and each haplotype was interlaced and did not form two distinct branches. CONCLUSIONS: High resistance to pyrethroids and propoxur was observed at four sites, but the resistance to malathion varied according to the location. Anopheles belenrae and the L1014W (TGG) mutation in An. sinensis were first discovered in Henan Province. The deltamethrin-resistant and deltamethrin-sensitive mosquito populations showed no genetic differentiation. The generation of resistance might be the result of the combination of multiple factors.

ABSTRACT

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was widely prevalent in Henan Province in the 1950s. Through active efforts by the government, there were no local cases reported from 1984 to 2015. In 2016, local VL cases reoccurred, and there was an increasing trend of VL cases in Henan Province. To provide a scientific control of VL, an investigation was conducted in Henan Province from 2016 to 2021. The data from VL cases were obtained from the Disease Surveillance Reporting System of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The rK39 immunochromatographic test (ICT) and PCR assay were performed among high-risk residents and all dogs in the patients' village. ITS1 was amplified, sequenced, and subjected to phylogenetic analyses. A total of 47 VL cases were reported in Henan Province during 2016-2021. Of the cases, 35 were local, and they were distributed in Zhengzhou, Luoyang, and Anyang. The annual average incidence was 0.008/100,000, showing an upward trend year by year (χ2 = 3.987, p = 0.046). Their ages ranged from 7 months to 71 years, with 44.68% (21/47) in the age group of 0-3 years and 46.81% (22/47) in the age group ≥15 years. The cases occurred throughout the year. The high-risk populations were infants and young children (age ≤3), accounting for 51.06% (24/47), followed by farmers at 36.17% (17/47). The ratio of males to females was 2.13:1. The positive rates of rK39 ICT and PCR were 0.35% (4/1130) and 0.21% (1/468) in the residents. The positive rates of rK39 ICT and PCR were 18.79% (440/2342) and 14.92% (139/929) in the dogs. The ITS1 amplification products in the patients and positive dogs were sequenced. The homology between the target sequence and Leishmania infantum was more than 98%. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that the patients and the positive dogs were infected by the same type of Leishmania, which was consistent with the strains in the hilly endemic areas in China. This paper showed that patients and domestic dogs were infected by the same type of L. infantum and that the positive rate in dogs was relatively high in Henan Province. Because the measures of patient treatment and culling of infected dogs were not effective in reducing VL incidence in Henan Province, it is urgent to develop new approaches for the control of VL, such as wearing insecticide-impregnated collars on dogs, treating the positive dogs, spraying insecticide for sandflies control, and improving residents' self-protection awareness to prevent the further spread of VL in Henan Province.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a prevalent comorbidity in patients with brain metastases (BM) and could result in sudden and accidental damage, as well as increased disease burden due to its rapid onset. Foreseeing the potential for the development of epilepsy may permit timely and efficient measures. This study aimed to analyze the influencing factors of epilepsy in advanced lung cancer (ALC) patients with BM and construct a nomogram model to predict the likelihood of developing epilepsy. METHODS: Socio-demographic and clinical data of ALC patients with BM were retrospectively collected from the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine between September 2019 and June 2021. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to determine the influencing factors for epilepsy in ALC patients with BM. Based on the results of the logistic regression analysis, a nomogram was built to represent the contribution of each influencing factor in predicting the probability of epilepsy development in ALC patients with BM. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were utilized to evaluate the goodness of fit and prediction performance of the model. RESULTS: The incidence of epilepsy among 138 ALC patients with BM was 29.7%. On the multivariate analysis, having a higher number of supratentorial lesions (odds ratio [OR] = 1.727; p = 0.022), hemorrhagic foci (OR = 4.922; p = .021), and a high-grade of peritumoral edema (OR = 2.524; p < .001) were independent risk factors for developing epilepsy, while undergoing gamma knife radiosurgery (OR = .327; p = .019) was an independent protective factor. The p-value of the Hosmer-Lemeshow test was .535 and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was .852 (95% CI: .807-.897), suggesting the model had a good fit and exhibited strong predictive accuracy. CONCLUSION: The nomogram was constructed that can predict the probability of epilepsy development for ALC patients with BM, which is helpful for healthcare professionals to identify high-risk groups early and allows for individualized interventions.

BACKGROUND: The crucial role that nurses play in offering palliative care to patients with life-threatening diseases is widely acknowledged, but the correlation between their eHealth literacy and their knowledge, attitudes, and practice in this domain has yet to be investigated. This study is conducted to investigate the status of eHealth literacy and knowledge, attitudes, and practice regarding palliative care among nurses, and to examine their relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was conducted among 546 nurses selected from the first-class tertiary hospitals located both inside and outside of Zhejiang Province between May 12 and May 20, 2022. The online survey of eHealth literacy scale (eHEALS) and scale of knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) regarding palliative care was performed using snowball sampling through the WeChat mini program "Questionnaire Star". The Spearman rank correlation and binary logistic regression model were used to analyze the independent association between eHealth literacy and KAP toward palliative care. RESULTS: The median scores of eHEALS and KAP regarding palliative care were 32 (interquartile range[IQR] 29 to 38) and 82 (IQR 54 to 106) points. The results of correlation analysis showed that the KAP regarding palliative care was significantly correlated with eHEALS (rho = 0.189, P < 0.001). In addition, the results of binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the eHEALS score was independently associated with the KAP score regarding palliative care when controlling for sociodemographic factors (OR = 2.109; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Nurses who worked in first-class tertiary hospitals have good levels of eHealth literacy, while the overall level of KAP regarding palliative care is moderate. Our findings highlight that the eHEALS score is independently associated with the KAP score regarding palliative care. Therefore, nursing managers should adopt multiple measures to comprehensively improve eHealth literacy among nurses, further enrich their knowledge of palliative care, promote a positive transformation of attitudes towards palliative care, and efficiently implement palliative care practice, in order to promote high-quality development of palliative care.

Background: Post-acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) symptoms occurred in most of the COVID-19 survivors. However, few studies have examined the issue of whether hospitalization results in different post-acute COVID-19 symptom risks. This study aimed to compare potential COVID-19 long-term effects in hospitalized and non-hospitalized COVID-19 survivors. Methods: This study is designed as a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. A systematic search of six databases was performed for identifying articles published from inception until April 20th, 2022, which compared post-acute COVID-19 symptom risk in hospitalized and non-hospitalized COVID-19 survivors using a predesigned search strategy included terms for SARS-CoV-2 (eg, COVID, coronavirus, and 2019-nCoV), post-acute COVID-19 Syndrome (eg, post-COVID, post COVID conditions, chronic COVID symptom, long COVID, long COVID symptom, long-haul COVID, COVID sequelae, convalescence, and persistent COVID symptom), and hospitalization (hospitalized, in hospital, and home-isolated). The present meta-analysis was conducted according to The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 statement using R software 4.1.3 to create forest plots. Q statistics and the I 2 index were used to evaluate heterogeneity in this meta-analysis. Results: Six observational studies conducted in Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Canada, and the USA involving 419 hospitalized and 742 non-hospitalized COVID-19 survivors were included. The number of COVID-19 survivors in included studies ranged from 63 to 431, and follow-up data were collected through visits in four studies and another two used an electronic questionnaire, visit and telephone, respectively. Significant increase in the risks of long dyspnea (OR = 3.18, 95% CI = 1.90-5.32), anxiety (OR = 3.09, 95% CI = 1.47-6.47), myalgia (OR = 2.33, 95% CI = 1.02-5.33), and hair loss (OR = 2.76, 95% CI = 1.07-7.12) risk were found in hospitalized COVID-19 survivors compared with outpatients. Conversely, persisting ageusia risk was significantly reduced in hospitalized COVID-19 survivors than in non-hospitalized patients. Conclusion: The findings suggested that special attention and patient-centered rehabilitation service based on a needs survey should be provided for hospitalized COVID-19 survivors who experienced high post-acute COVID-19 symptoms risk.

Saffron floral bio-residues (SFB) are a valuable natural source of antioxidants and dyes that can contribute to the development of new food products and cosmetic products. Color change was usually observed during SFB storage, which may result in quality degradation of SFB or even cause potential hazard to human health. In order to clarify the mechanism of color change of SFB sample, the chemical differences among SFB samples stored under different conditions were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and chemometrics methods, from which differential flavonols and anthocyanins were screened and their kinetic variations during sample storage summarized. In addition, the color change of the SFB sample was digitalized using an electronic eye (E-eye), which was found to be related to the content of delphinidin-3,5-di-O-glucoside (DDG). Moreover, the degradation kinetic parameters of DDG under different storage conditions were studied. In conclusion, the variation of kaempferol-, isorhamnetin-, and quercetin-type flavonol, and delphinidin- and petunidin-type anthocyanin resulted in the color change of SFB sample, and anthocyanin was found more unstable than flavonol. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Saffron floral bio-residues (SFB) are popular natural sources of antioxidants and colorants that can be used in food and cosmetic products. Color change usually occurs during SFB storage period. Clarifying the mechanism of the color change of SFB will help us to ensure the quality of SFB.

ABSTRACT

To date, the relationship between conjunctivitis and air pollutants has been widely concerned, but the conclusions are not very unified. This study aims to explore the short-term effects of ambient ozone (O3) on the conjunctivitis outpatient visits in Pudong New Area, Shanghai. A quasi-Poisson model combined with the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was performed to study the short-term effects of O3 on the risk of outpatient visits for conjunctivitis, after controlling the effects of temperature, relative humidity and wind speed. Taking the median concentration of O3 as a reference, the moderate high O3 (75th percentile) showed the largest effect estimates for single and cumulative lag effects at lag 4 (RR 1.013, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.006-1.019) and lag 0-10 (RR 1.075, 95%CI 1.025-1.128), respectively. Our study suggested that the moderate high O3 increased the chances of conjunctivitis outpatient visits and had an evident lag effect.

ABSTRACT

This study was to analyze the correlations of IL-1ß and vitamin D (VitD) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease assessment test (CAT) score in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). For this purpose, a total of 65 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treated in our hospital between June 2020 and June 2022 were enrolled and assigned to a research group, and 40 healthy individuals who underwent physical examination in our hospital over the same time spanning were enrolled into the control group. The 65 COPD patients were further grouped into a stability group (30 cases) and an exacerbation group (35 cases). The two groups were compared in the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and blood gas indexes (arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure (PaCO2) and arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2). The modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (mMRC) and the CAT were adopted for evaluation of the stability group and exacerbation group. The correlations of IL-1ß and 25(OH)D with mMRC and CAT scores were analyzed. The diagnostic value of IL-1ß and VitD in patients in different stages was analyzed through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results showed that the control group showed greatly lower IL-1ß and PaCO2 levels and higher 25(OH)D and PaO2 levels than the research group (all P<0.05). The stability group got greatly lower mMRC and CAT scores than the exacerbation group (both P<0.05). IL-1ß had positive correlations with mMRC and CAT scores, while 25(OH)D had negative correlations with them (P<0.05). According to ROC curve-based analysis, IL-1ß and 25(OH)D had areas under the curves of 0.814 and 0.583, respectively, in diagnosing the acute exacerbation period, and had specificities of 56.67% and 43.33%, respectively and sensitivities of 97.14% and 74.29%, respectively. In conclusion, patients with COPD have increased IL-1 ß and VitD deficiency, so VitD can be properly supplemented during treatment, and the levels of inflammatory factors should be paid close attention to at all times. IL-1 ß and VitD can be regarded as novel ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of COPD, which may further improve the effect of COPD prevention and treatment.

ABSTRACT

Tremendous effort has been focused on improving the toughness of epoxy, but the common approaches diminish the mechanical properties. In this work, a new silicone-modified trifunctional epoxy monomer SITEUP is synthesized from the hydrosilylation transformation of eugenol epoxy (EPEU) and tris-(dimethylsiloxy)phenylsilane. The chemical structures and curing kinetics of SITEUP are investigated based on 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, MADLI-TOF-MS, and DSC analyses. SITEUP is introduced into DGEBA/IPDA systems as a functional modifier in varied loadings for toughening the resulting epoxy thermosets. The impact strength of the modified epoxy thermosets containing 20% SITEUP is 84% higher than that of the pristine epoxy thermoset and also maintains high flexural strength. Further morphology study reveals that the plastic deformation caused by siloxane segments is the key factor accounting for the enhanced toughness of the finalized epoxy thermosets. Si-O-Si segments incorporated into the thermosetting network could absorb more energy by increasing the mobility of polymer chains under external stress and led to improved thermal stability and damping characteristics. In addition, SITEUP is able to decrease the surface tension and increase the hydrophobic properties of the resultant epoxy materials.

The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) is one of the most extensively sequenced molecular markers in plant systematics due to its generally concerted evolution. While non-concerted evolution has been found in some plant taxa, such information is missing in Lycium. Molecular studies of six species and two variants of the genus Lycium revealed high levels of intra- and inter-individual polymorphism in the ITS, indicating non-concerted evolution. All genomic DNA ITS paralogues were identified as putative pseudogenes or functional paralogues through a series of comparisons of sequence features, including length and substitution variation, GC content, secondary structure stability, and the presence of conserved motifs in the 5.8S gene, and the rate of evolution. Approximately, 60% of ITS pseudogenes could be easily detected. Based on phylogenetic analysis, all pseudogenes were highly distinct from their corresponding functional copies, tended to evolve neutrally, and clustered randomly together in the evolutionary tree. The results probably suggest that this ITS non-concerted evolution is related to the recent divergence between tandem repeats within the Lycium genome and hybridization between species. Our study complements those of pseudogenes in plant taxa and provides a theoretical basis for the phylogeny and genetic origin of the genus Lycium while having important implications for the use of ITS molecular markers for phylogenetic reconstruction.

Lycium barbarum L. (LB) fruits have high nutritive values and therapeutic effects. The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the differences in phenolic composition of LB fruits from different geographical regions. Different methods of characterization and statistical analysis of data showed that different geographic sources of China could be significantly separated from each other. The highest total phenolic compound (TPC) content was observed in LB fruits from Ningxia (LBN), followed by those from Gansu (LBG) and Qinghai (LBQ). The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of LB fruits revealed that LBQ had a peak at 2972 cm-1 whereas there was no similar peak in LBG and LBQ. A new HPLC method was established for the simultaneous determination of 8 phenolic compounds by quantitative analysis of multiple components by a single marker (QAMS), including 4 phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, and ferulic acid), 1 coumarin (scopoletin), and 3 flavonoids (kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, rutin, and narcissoside). It was showed that rutin was the most dominant phenolic compound in LBQ, although the average content of 4 phenolic acids was also high in LBQ, and scopoletin was the richest in LBG. UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS was used to qualitatively analyze the phenolics, which showed LBN was abundant in phenolic acids, LBQ was rich in flavonoids, and coumarins were the most plentiful in LBG. In conclusion, this study can provide references for the quality control and evaluation of phenolics in LB fruits and their by-products.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum malaria is recognized as a major global public health problem. The malaria vaccine was important because the case fatality rate of falciparum malaria was high. Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP) is one of the potential vaccine candidates, but the genetic polymorphism of PfCSP raises concerns regarding the efficacy of the vaccine. This study aimed to investigate the genetic polymorphism of PfCSP and provide data for the improvement of PfCSP-based vaccine (RTS,S malaria vaccine). METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 287 Chinese migrant workers who were infected with P. falciparum and returning from Africa to Henan Province during 2016-2018. The Pfcsp genes were analysed to estimate the genetic diversity of this parasite. RESULTS: The results showed that there were two mutations at the N-terminus of imported Pfcsp in Henan Province, including insertion amino acids (58.71%, 118/201) and A → G (38.81%, 78/201). The number of repeats of tetrapeptide motifs (NANP/NVDP/NPNP/NVDA) in the central repeat region ranged mainly from 39 to 42 (97.51%, 196/201). A total of 14 nonsynonymous amino acid changes were found at the C-terminus. The average nucleotide difference (K) of imported Pfcsp in Henan Province was 5.719, and the haplotype diversity (Hd) was 0.964 ± 0.004. The estimated value of dN-dS was 0.047, indicating that the region may be affected by positive natural selection. The minimum number of recombination events (Rm) of imported Pfcsp in Henan Province was close to that in Africa. The analysis of genetic differentiation showed that there may be moderate differentiation between East Africa and North Africa (Fst = 0.06484), and the levels of differentiation in the other regions were very small (Fst < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The N-terminus of Pfcsp was relatively conserved, and the central repeat region and the Th2R and Th3R regions of the C-terminus were highly polymorphic. The gene polymorphism pattern among Chinese migrant workers returning from Africa to Henan Province was consistent with that in Africa. The geographical pattern of population differentiation and the evidence of natural selection and gene recombination suggested that the effect of polymorphism on the efficacy of PfCSP-based vaccines should be considered.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, novel micro-architectures with X-type lattice unit cell (namely, face-centered cubic (FCC), and X-type) are constructed and prepared by additive manufacturing technology. The compression behaviors of micro-architectures are explored in detail by experimental measurement and theoretical prediction. It is found that the strength of FCC micro-lattice structure is higher than that of the X-type micro-lattice structure with the same relative density. The X-type micro-lattice structure exhibits a zero Poisson's ratio during compression deformation. In addition, the compressive strength and energy absorption efficiency of proposed micro-architectures shows a higher advantage over other previously cellular materials in a map for material selection.
