ABSTRACT

Candida spondylodiscitis associatd with epidural abscess is rarely seen. We present a patient with Hodgkin lymphoma who received chemotherapy and developed systemic Candida infection, which was complicated by Candida spondylodiscitis and epidural abscess (AU)

ABSTRACT

In June 2003, two injections of approximately 3.9 mol of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) were made 8 days apart in the East River, a 25 km tidal strait, to observe solute mixing and dissipation. The first injection occurred at slack before flood, and the second at slack before ebb (flood = northward flow). Tidally synchronized surveys of the SF6 tracer patch, supplemented by vertical profiles, were conducted by boat for 6 and 4 days following the flood and ebb injections, respectively. Residence times for the tracer-tagged water mass in the East River were estimated to be 3.3 +/- 0.7 days and 1.7 +/- 0.5 days for the flood and ebb injections, respectively, after correcting SF6 inventories for losses of SF6 from the water column by air-water gas exchange. The data indicate that the majority of East River solutes are transported to New York Harbor and that tidal mixing dominates subtidal circulation with respectto solute transport. Surveys of the adjacent lower Hudson River revealed a northward-moving, intermediate layer of East River water. Our results suggest that tidal phasing of contaminant discharges in the East River could reduce environmental impacts, by increasing flushing rates and directing a greater fraction of material away from Long Island Sound.

ABSTRACT

We describe the experimental use of an endoluminal shunt in different procedures for small vessel reconstruction. Since the arteries used in this work are similar in diameter to those of the brain, this method could be applied to human vascular surgery.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: This study investigates the ability of artificial neural networks (ANN) to simultaneously correct for attenuation and Compton scattering in scintigraphic imaging. METHODS: Three sets of experiments are conducted using images of radioactive sources with various shapes and distributions in a homogeneous medium. Numerical Monte Carlo simulations and physical phantom acquisitions of radioactive geometric sources provide the basic material for correction. Our method is based on the following assumptions: information needed to correct for scattering can be extracted from the energy spectrum at each pixel without any assumption concerning the source distribution, and two diametrically opposed energy spectrum acquisitions yield enough information on the source location in the diffusing medium for simultaneous correction for attenuation and scattering. RESULTS: Qualitative and quantitative evaluations of scatter correction by ANN demonstrate its ability to perform scatter correction from the energy spectra observed in each pixel. By using the energy spectra of incident photons detected in two diametrically opposed images, multilayer neural networks are able to perform a proper restitution of projection images without any assumption on geometry or position of radioactive sources in simple geometric cases. ANN corrections compare favorably to those provided by five of the most popular methods. A satisfying correction of both scatter and attenuation is observed for a human pelvis scan obtained during routine clinical practice. CONCLUSION: An ANN is an efficient tool for attenuation and Compton scattering in simple model cases. The results obtained for routine scintigrams in a much more complex situation are strong incentives for performing further studies.

ABSTRACT

Three procedures are proposed for the determination of trace levels of fluoride in sea-water, based on the formation of aluminium monofluoride in an electrothermal graphite furnace, followed by measurement of its molecular absorption at 227.45 nm. They involve the use of dilution, a matrix modifier, or a matrix modifier and an ion-exchange resin, and are all acceptably sensitive and specific for fluoride. Interferences from cations and anions are removed by a simple 20-fold dilution of the sample. At 10-fold sample dilution, chloride interference can be removed by adding 0.3M ammonium nitrate together with 0.01M aluminium + 0.01M strontium as a matrix modifier. The same matrix modifier is valid for use with 5-fold sample dilution and a cation-exchange step to avoid matrix affects from cations and chloride. The detection limit is about 8-10 ng/ml fluoride and the determination limit is 20 ng/ml. The precision of peak-height measurement at 0.2 mug/ml is 5-7%.

ABSTRACT

A study was conducted to determine the distribution of phenotypes and gene frequencies of haptoglobin, phosphoglucomutase 1, esterase D, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and three monomorphic systems SOD, sMDH and NADH DIA I. Results obtained from two Basque regions and León were compared with those from other Spanish populations. Gene frequencies observed in the León sample were similar to those obtained from the other Spanish samples. The Basque samples differed from the other Spanish populations in the gene frequencies of esterase D.

ABSTRACT

Haptoglobin, phosphoglucomutase 1 and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase gene frequencies have been found for some Castillian provinces. The NADH diaphorase I, superoxide dismutase, lactate dehydrogenase, soluble oxaloacetate transaminase, soluble malate dehydrogenase, carbonic anhydrase I and carbonic anhydrase II are non-polymorphic red cell enzymes in Caucasoids and we have verified this in Castillian samples.
