ABSTRACT

Background: worldwide, undergraduate medical education has been deficient in palliative care, as shows a survey in Colombia. Universidad de la Sabana decided to implement a competence-based optional course. Objectives: to identify the perception of acquired knowledge in medical students who underwent a palliative care course. Material and methods: a cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate, through a structured survey to students who completed an optional palliative care course, the perception of acquired knowledge, and to explore suggestions for program improvement. Results: in all, 95,32% of subjects, completed the survey; 100% of students reported an increase of acquired knowledge after completing the course. Acquired knowledge mainly related to pain relief (77.7%), followed by communication tools (26.6%) and symptom management (23.3%). Among students, 95% considered they had acquired useful tools for their medical practice. Recommended changes included intensifying topics such as palliative care in HIV-AIDS, and in acute, non-oncologic and pediatric pain. Conclusions: students perceived an increase in their knowledge on symptom management, communication skills, ethical dilemmas and decision-making, and investigation tools as a result of a pain and palliative care course. After an evaluation of a two-year process for the optional course, the curriculum committee decided to implement it as a mandatory course (AU)

ABSTRACT

A brief summary is given of the development of nursing in Ecuador, particularly since the introduction of the national nursing policy in 1972. The training course is divided into two parts. The first qualifies the nurse to give comprehensive care to the patient in the areas of mental health, maternal and child health, surgical medicine, community health, and administration--after which she engages in rural practice for one year. The second part involves further studies in the areas mentioned and research by those who wish to go on to the licenciate degree. Also described are the functions of the Association in regard to teaching the nursing service, and the interests of the profession.
