ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to summarize the intensive care experience of a patient undergoing combined multi-organ cluster ("larynx-trachea-thyroid-hypopharynx-esophagus") transplantation. METHODS: The intensive care management plan for this case was developed by a multidisciplinary team, with focus on 6 aspects: (1) stabilizing the circulation and reducing anastomotic tension by position management to improve the survival chances of transplanted organs, (2) adopting goal-directed analgesia and sedation protocols, as well as preventing anastomotic fistula, (3) implementing a bedside ultrasound-guided nutrition plan, (4) employing "body-mind" synchronous rehabilitation to facilitate functional recovery, (5) taking antirejection treatment and protective isolation measures, (6) monitoring and nursing thyroid function. RESULTS: During the intensive care, the patient's vital signs were stable. The patient was successfully weaned from the ventilator and transferred to the general ward for further treatment at 9 days postoperatively, and discharged upon recovery at 58 days postoperatively. The patient was in good condition during follow-up. CONCLUSION: This study provides reference for the care of patients who undergo similar transplantation in the future.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a sustainable and environmentally friendly method was developed for the enrichment and purification of phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis. This was achieved by utilizing a temperature-sensitive polymer, Pluronic F68, in an aqueous two-phase solvent system. The phase behavior of the temperature-sensitive polymer-based biphasic system was evaluated. The extraction conditions were optimized by both single-factor experiments and response surface methodology. Under the optimal conditions, the upper polymer-rich phase was recycled for sustainable phycocyanin extraction, resulting in a grade of 3.23 during the third extraction cycle. Pluronic F68 could be efficiently recovered and reused during the extraction process. The interaction mechanism between Pluronic F68 and phycocyanin was systematically studied using FT-IR and fluorescence analysis. This was further complemented by static and dynamic calculation of molecular motion through molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation, indicating that hydrophobic segment of Pluronic F68 played a key role in the binding process with phycocyanin.

ABSTRACT

Pyrolysis is an effective process for disposing of municipal sewage sludge (SS). Plastics can affect the SS pyrolysis behaviour and pyrolysis products due to their low ash and high hydrocarbon ratio. The secondary pollutants from the pyrolysis process may also be affected. Therefore, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a typical plastic, was chosen to investigate the release characteristics of pollutants containing nitrogen, sulphur, and chlorine via SS pyrolysis, and the changes of biochar to adsorb two typical heavy metals, Pb and Cu. The pyrolysis of PET plastics facilitates the migration of N toward solid and liquid-phase products, S and Cl to the gas-phase products via pyrolysis. Oxygenated compounds of pyrolytic volatiles decreased from 38.18% to 28.43%, concurrently promoting the formation of phenolic compounds. The co-pyrolysis improved the quality of biochar and the ability to adsorb Pb and Cu. This systematic study can provide some support for the further improvement of SS pyrolysis technology, and will also be beneficial for subsequent applications.

ABSTRACT

Straw and biochar, two commonly used soil amendments, have been shown to enhance soil fertility and the composition of microbial communities. To compare the effects of straw and biochar on soil fertility, particularly focusing on soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) components, and the physiochemical properties of soil and microbial communities, a combination of high-throughput sequencing and three-dimensional fluorescence mapping technology was employed. In our study, we set up four treatments, i.e., without biochar and straw (B0S0); biochar only (B1S0); straw returning only (B0S1); and biochar and straw (B1S1). Our results demonstrate that soil organic matter (SOM), available nitrogen (AN), and available potassium (AK) were increased by 34.71%, 22.96%, and 61.68%, respectively, under the B1S1 treatment compared to the B0S0 treatment. In addition, microbial carbon (MBC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and particulate organic carbon (POC) were significantly increased with the B1S1 treatment, by 55.13%, 15.59%, and 125.46%, respectively. The results also show an enhancement in microbial diversity, the composition of microbial communities, and the degree of soil humification with the application of biochar and straw. Moreover, by comparing the differences in soil fertility, DOM components, and other indicators under different treatments, the combined treatments of biochar and straw had a more significant positive impact on paddy soil fertility compared to biochar. In conclusion, our study revealed the combination of straw incorporation and biochar application has significant impacts and is considered an effective approach to improving soil fertility.

ABSTRACT

Concentric Tube Robots (CTRs) have been proposed to operate within the unstructured environment for minimally invasive surgeries. In this letter, we consider the operation scenario where the tubes travel inside the channels with a large clearance or large curvature, such as aortas or industrial pipes. Accurate kinematic modeling of CTRs is required for the development of motion planning and control within these operation scenarios. To this end, we extended the conventional CTR kinematics model to a more general case with large tube-to-tube clearance and large centerline curvature. Numerical simulations and experimental validations are conducted to compare our model with respect to the conventional CTR kinematic model. In the physical experiments, our proposed model achieved a tip position error of 1.53 mm in the 2D planer case and 3.86 mm in 3D case, outperforming the state-of-the-art model by 71% and 61%, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Wound management remains a great challenge for clinicians due to the complex physiological process of wound healing. Porous silicon (PSi) with controlled pore morphology, abundant surface chemistry, unique photonic properties, good biocompatibility, easy biodegradation and potential bioactivity represent an exciting class of materials for various biomedical applications. In this review, we focus on the recent progress of PSi in the design of advanced sensing and delivery systems for wound management applications. Firstly, we comprehensively introduce the common type, normal healing process, delaying factors and therapeutic drugs of wound healing. Subsequently, the typical fabrication, functionalization and key characteristics of PSi have been summarized because they provide the basis for further use as biosensing and delivery materials in wound management. Depending on these properties, the rise of PSi materials is evidenced by the examples in literature in recent years, which has emphasized the robust potential of PSi for wound monitoring, treatment and theranostics. Finally, challenges and opportunities for the future development of PSi-based sensors and delivery systems for wound management applications are proposed and summarized. We hope that this review will help readers to better understand current achievements and future prospects on PSi-based sensing and delivery systems for advanced wound management.

ABSTRACT

Copper, an indispensable micronutrient, is implicated in numerous vital biological processes and is essential for all physiological activities. Recently, the discovery of a novel type of copper-dependent cell death, known as cuproptosis, has shed light on its role in cancer development. Extensive research is currently underway to unravel the mechanisms underlying cuproptosis and its correlation with various cancer types. In this review, we summarize the findings regarding the roles and mechanisms of cuproptosis in various cancer types, including colorectal cancer, lung cancer, gastric cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer and cutaneous melanoma. Furthermore, the effects of copper-related agents such as copper chelators and copper ionophores on cell proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, tumor immunity, and chemotherapy resistance have been explored in cancer preclinical and clinical trials. These insights provide promising avenues for the development of prospective anticancer drugs aimed at inducing cuproptosis.

ABSTRACT

To investigate the utility of serum bile acid profiling for the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We analyzed 15 specific bile acids in the serum of 269 IBD patients, 200 healthy controls (HC), and 174 patients with other intestinal diseases (OID) using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Serum bile acid levels were compared between IBD group, HC group, and OID group. Binary logistic regression-based models were developed to model the bile acids and diagnose IBD. Furthermore, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of each bile acid and the model. Compared to HC group, IBD group exhibited significantly lower levels of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), deoxycholic acid (DCA), glycodeoxycholic acid (GDCA), taurodeoxycholic acid (TDCA), lithocholic acid (LCA), glycolithocholic acid (GLCA), taurolithocholic acid (TLCA), and an elevated primary-to-secondary bile acid ratio. DCA had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.860 for diagnosing IBD, with a sensitivity of 80.67% and a specificity of 82.50%. A model Y0 combining DCA and CDCA to distinguish between IBD group and HC group further improved accuracy (AUC = 0.866, sensitivity = 76.28%, specificity = 89.37%). Compared to non-IBD group (which combined healthy controls and those with other intestinal diseases), IBD group had significantly lower levels of DCA, GDCA, TDCA, LCA, GLCA, and TLCA, and elevated levels of glycocholic acid (GCA) and glycochenodeoxycholic acid (GCDCA). A model Y1 incorporating GCDCA, DCA and TLCA to distinguish between IBD group and non-IBD group yielded an AUC of 0.792, with a sensitivity of 77.67% and specificity of 71.91%. IBD patients exhibit decreased serum secondary bile acid levels and an elevated primary-to-secondary bile acid ratio. Serum bile acid alterations are associated with the onset of IBD. A model consisting of CDCA and DCA has potential for distinguishing between IBD group and HC group, while a model incorporating GCDCA, DCA and TLCA may be suitable for distinguishing between IBD group and non-IBD group.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna Franch. has been widely utilized in folk medicine by the Miao people in the southwestern region of China for treating skin sores which may be associated with microbial infection. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the antifungal bioactivity of S. hookeriana var. digyna against fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans in vitro and in vivo, as well as its underlying mechanism and the key bioactive component. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The antifungal bioactivity of 80% ethanol extract of S. hookeriana var. digyna (SHE80) was investigated in vitro using the broth microdilution method, time-growth curve, and time-kill assay. Its key functional component and antifungal mechanism were explored with combined approaches including UPLC-Q-TOF-MS, network pharmacology and metabolomics. The antifungal pathway was further supported via microscopic observation of fungal cell morphology and examination of its effects on fungal biofilm and cell membranes using fluorescent staining reagents. In vivo assessment of antifungal bioactivity was conducted using a mouse model infected with C. albicans on the skin. RESULTS: S. hookeriana var. digyna suppressed fluconazole-resistant C. albicans efficiently (MIC = 16 µg/mL, MFC = 64 µg/mL). It removed fungal biofilm, increased cell membrane permeability, induced protein leakage, reduced membrane fluidity, disrupted mitochondrial membrane potential, induced the release of reactive oxygen species, promoted cell apoptosis, and inhibited the transformation of fungi from the yeast state to the hyphal state significantly. In terms of mechanism, it affected sphingolipid metabolism and signaling pathway. Moreover, the predicted bioactive component, sarcovagine D, was supported by antifungal bioactivity evaluation in vitro (MIC = 4 µg/mL, MFC = 16 µg/mL). Furthermore, S. hookeriana var. digyna promoted wound healing, reduced the number of colony-forming units, and reduced inflammation effectively in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: The traditional use of S. hookeriana var. digyna for fungal skin infections was supported by antifungal bioactivity investigated in vitro and in vivo. Its mechanism and bioactive component were predicted and confirmed by experiments, which also provided a new antifungal agent for future research.

ABSTRACT

Glioblastoma (GBM) poses a significant challenge in oncology and stands as the most aggressive form of brain cancer. A primary contributor to its relentless nature is the stem-like cancer cells, called glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs). GSCs have the capacity for self-renewal and tumorigenesis, leading to frequent GBM recurrences and complicating treatment modalities. While natural killer (NK) cells exhibit potential in targeting and eliminating stem-like cancer cells, their efficacy within the GBM microenvironment is limited due to constrained infiltration and function. To address this limitation, novel investigations focusing on boosting NK cell activity against GSCs are imperative. This study presents two streamlined image-based assays assessing NK cell migration and cytotoxicity towards GSCs. It details protocols and explores the strengths and limitations of these methods. These assays could aid in identifying novel targets to enhance NK cell activity towards GSCs, facilitating the development of NK cell-based immunotherapy for improved GBM treatment.

ABSTRACT

There is a growing and urgent need for developing novel biomaterials and therapeutic approaches for efficient wound healing. Microneedles (MNs), which can penetrate necrotic tissues and biofilm barriers at the wound and deliver active ingredients to the deeper layers in a minimally invasive and painless manner, have stimulated the interests of many researchers in the wound-healing filed. Among various materials, polymeric MNs have received widespread attention due to their abundant material sources, simple and inexpensive manufacturing methods, excellent biocompatibility and adjustable mechanical strength. Meanwhile, due to the unique properties of nanomaterials, the incorporation of nanomaterials can further extend the application range of polymeric MNs to facilitate on-demand drug release and activate specific therapeutic effects in combination with other therapies. In this review, we firstly introduce the current status and challenges of wound healing, and then outline the advantages and classification of MNs. Next, we focus on the manufacturing methods of polymeric MNs and the different raw materials used for their production. Furthermore, we give a summary of polymeric MNs incorporated with several common nanomaterials for chronic wounds healing. Finally, we discuss the several challenges and future prospects of transdermal drug delivery systems using nanomaterials-based polymeric MNs in wound treatment application.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the therapeutic effect of Fu's subcutaneous needling at myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) on pain, lumbar mobility and the quality of life in patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH), so as to provide clinicians with new ideas and methods in treating LDH. METHODS: One hundred patients with LDH admitted to department of rehabilitation medicine of the affiliated hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2022 to January 2023 were collected as the subjects, and they were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 50 cases in each one. In the observation group, the spreading technique of Fu's subcutaneous needling was delivered at MTrP. In the control group, the routine acupuncture was applied to Shenshu (BL23), Weizhong (BL40) and MTrP. The treatment was given 3 times weekly, for 2 weeks in the two groups. The score of visual analogue scale (VAS) was evaluated before treatment, at the moment after the 1st treatment completion and after 2 weeks of treatment, separately, and the inclinometer was adopted to measure the range of motion (ROM) of the lumbar flexion, extension and lateral flexion. The numbers of MTrPs and their distribution were recorded before treatment and after the completion of a 2-week treatment in the two groups. Before treatment and in 4 weeks of follow-up, using SF-36 scale, the score of the quality of life was evaluated. The incidence of adverse effects was recorded. RESULTS: At the moment of the 1st treatment completion and after 2 weeks of treatment, VAS score and ROM of the lumbar region were significantly improved in comparison with those before treatment in the two groups and the improvement was superior in the observation group compared with the control group (P<0.05, P<0.01). After 2 weeks of treatment, the total number of MTrPs and the counts of MTrPs in each muscle zone were reduced when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05). In the observation group, the total number of MTrPs and numbers of MTrPs in the zones of quadratus lumborum, musculi multifidus and musculi iliocostalis lumborum decreased significantly when compared with the control group (P<0.05), while the difference was not significant in the numbers in the zone of musculi glutaeus medius between the two groups. In 4 weeks of follow-up, the scores of SF-36 scale were improved in comparison with those before treatment in each group and the result in the observation was better (P<0.05). No any adverse events occurred during treatment in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Fu's subcutaneous needling is effective for reducing the numbers of MTrPs and improving analgesia, ROM of the lumbar region, as well as the long-term quality of life in the patients with LDH.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To identify the predictive role of sarcopenia in long-term survival among rectal cancer patients who underwent surgery based on available evidence. METHODS: The Medline, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were searched up to October 20, 2023, for relevant studies. Overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were the endpoints. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were combined to evaluate the association between sarcopenia and survival. RESULTS: Fifteen studies with 4283 patients were included. The pooled results demonstrated that preoperative sarcopenia significantly predicted poorer OS (HR = 2.07, 95% CI = 1.67-2.57, P<0.001), DFS (HR = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.39-2.48, P<0.001) and CSS (HR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.31-2.56, P<0.001). Furthermore, subgroup analysis based on neoadjuvant therapy indicated that sarcopenia was a risk factor for worse OS and DFS in patients who received (OS: HR = 2.44, P<0.001; DFS: HR = 2.16, P<0.001) but not in those who did not receive (OS: HR = 2.44, P<0.001; DDFS: HR = 1.86, P = 0.002) neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. In addition, subgroup analysis based on sample size and ethnicity showed similar results. CONCLUSION: Preoperative sarcopenia is significantly related to poor survival in surgical rectal cancer patients and could serve as a novel and valuable predictor of long-term prognosis in these patients.

BACKGROUND: The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a method that can accurately locate the posterior capsule of the lens to facilitate a relatively complete resection of the anterior vitreous body. METHODS: A total of 51 patients in the experimental group and control group were enrolled in this study. Phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy was performed in all cases. After the cataract procedure was completed in the control group, the surgeon performed a conventional anterior vitrectomy with the operative eye. In the experimental group, anterior vitrectomy was performed according to the threadiness corrugation of the posterior capsule of the lens. During the operation, with the help of triamcinolone, two surgeons confirmed the resection of the anterior vitreous cortex; the best corrected visual acuity and intraocular pressure of all patients were recorded at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. RESULTS: Fifty patients underwent phacoemulsification combined with vitrectomy, except one patient in the experimental group who was lost to follow-up. After surgery, no significant complications were observed in all patients except two patients in the control group with temporary increases in intraocular pressure. There was no significant difference in preoperative visual acuity between the two groups (t = 0.83, P = 0.25). Both groups had varying degrees of improvement in best corrected visual acuity at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Moreover, there was no significant difference in BCVA between the two groups at the three follow-up time points (t=-1.15, -1.65, -1.09, P = 0.53, 0.21, 0.23). After surgery, no significant complications were observed in all patients except two patients in the control group with temporary increases in intraocular pressure. Incomplete resection of the anterior vitreous cortex was observed in 2 patients in each group, but there was no significant difference (χ2 = 7.81, P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: In the process of cataract surgery combined with vitrectomy, thready corrugation appears in the posterior capsule of the lens and is an important sign of its localization. Anterior vitrectomy can be accomplished safely and effectively with the help of thread-like corrugation, and the surgical effect is almost the same as that of traditional surgery. Especially suitable for beginners in vitreous surgery.

ABSTRACT

Aging and regeneration represent complex biological phenomena that have long captivated the scientific community. To fully comprehend these processes, it is essential to investigate molecular dynamics through a lens that encompasses both spatial and temporal dimensions. Conventional omics methodologies, such as genomics and transcriptomics, have been instrumental in identifying critical molecular facets of aging and regeneration. However, these methods are somewhat limited, constrained by their spatial resolution and their lack of capacity to dynamically represent tissue alterations. ABSTRACT

Diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT) is recognized as a more reliable method for determining labile heavy metal (HM) concentration in soil than traditional destructive methods. However, the current DGT measurement index, CDGT, theoretically underestimates the true labile concentration (Clabile) of HMs in soil and lacks direct comparability with the conventional soil HM content indices due to unit differences. Here, we proposed CDGT-W, a new simple index which is defined as the HM accumulation in the binding layer, normalized to the weight of soil (optimized water content = 100% of the maximum water holding capacity) filled in the open cavity-type DGT device over a specified deployment time (optimized time = 24 h). The procedure for measuring CDGT-W is analogous to that of CDGT but includes precise determination of water content (water/dry soil) and the mass of soil filled in the cavity. We conducted measurements of Cu, Pb, Cr(Ⅵ) and As(V) as CDGT-W, CDGT, solution concentration (Csoln), and CaCl2 extractable concentration (CCaCl2) on three soils with a diverse range of HM concentrations. CDGT-W showed significant linear correlations with all other tested indexes. The ratios of CDGT-W to CCaCl2 varied between 0.30 and 0.98 for all HM-soil combinations with only one exception, a range much greater than CDGT/Csoln (typically <0.1) but lower than 1. This suggested that CDGT-W may more accurately reflect Clabile than CDGT (theoretically underestimates Cliable) and CCaCl2(likely overestimates Cliable). Additionally, CDGT-W measurements for these four HMs exhibited a broad measure concentration range and a low detection limit (mg/kg level). Consequently, CDGT-W may offer a more reliable alternative to CDGT for characterizing Clabile in unsaturated soils.

ABSTRACT

Soil amendment is an important strategy for improving soil quality and crop yield. From 2014 to 2019, we conducted a study to investigate the effects of tobacco straw return with lime on soil nutrients, soil microbial community structure, tobacco leaf yield, and quality in southern Anhui, China. A field experiment was conducted with four treatments: straw removed (CK), straw return (St), straw return with dolomite (St + D), and straw return with lime (St + L). Results showed that after 5 years of application, the St + L significantly increased the soil pH by 16.9%, and the contents of soil alkaline nitrogen (N) and available potassium (K) by 17.2% and 23.0%, respectively, compared with the CK. Moreover, the St + L significantly increased tobacco leaf yield (24.0%) and the appearance (9.1%) and sensory (5.9%) quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves. The addition of soil conditioners (straw, dolomite, and lime) increased both the total reads and effective sequences of soil microorganisms. Bacterial diversity was more sensitive to changes in the external environment compared to soil fungi. The application of soil amendments (lime and straw) promoted the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the soil. Additionally, bacterial species had greater competition and limited availability of resources for survival compared to fungi. The results showed that soil microorganisms were significantly influenced by the presence of AK, AN, and pH contents. These findings can provide an effective method for improving the quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves and guiding the amelioration of acidic soil in regions where tobacco-rice rotation is practiced.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To synthesize the existing evidence on the association between obesity and rotator cuff repair outcomes such as pain, shoulder function, range of motion, and complications. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases for relevant observational studies (cohort and case-control) and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The target population in the included studies comprised adults who had undergone rotator cuff repair procedures. The outcomes of interest were functional outcomes (such as range of motion), pain scores, patient-reported outcome measures, and complication rates (such as re-repair and readmission rates). We applied random-effects models and calculated pooled effect sizes reported as standardized mean differences (SMDs) or relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: We analysed data from 11 studies. In most, the follow-up periods ranged from 12 to 60 months. Obese individuals experienced greater pain (SMD 0.30; 95% CI, 0.10, 0.50) and lower shoulder function (SMD -0.33; 95% CI, -0.54, -0.12) than other individuals in the long-term post-operative follow-up. Obese individuals also had higher risks of complications (RR 1.48; 95% CI, 1.11, 1.98) and readmission (RR 1.35; 95% CI, 1.27, 1.43), but a similar likelihood of re-repair (RR, 1.27; 95% CI, 0.82, 1.95) than non-obese/normal BMI individuals. While the forward flexion and external rotation functions were comparable, obese individuals displayed less internal rotation function than other individuals (SMD -0.59; 95% CI, -0.87, -0.30). CONCLUSION: Obesity was associated with unfavourable outcomes after rotator cuff surgery, including increased pain, reduced shoulder function, high risks of complications, and readmission. These findings emphasize the importance of addressing obesity-related factors to improve post-operative outcomes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Status epilepticus (SE) in the neurology intensive care unit (ICU) is associated with significant morbidity. We aimed to evaluate the utility of existing prognostic scores, namely the Status Epilepticus Severity Score (STESS), Epidemiology Based Mortality Score in Status Epilepticus (EMSE)-EACE and Encephalitis-Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus-Diazepam Resistance-Image Abnormalities-Tracheal Intubation (END-IT), among SE patients in the neurology ICU. METHODS: Neurology ICU patients with SE requiring continuous electroencephalography (cEEG) monitoring over a 10 year period were included. The STESS, EMSE-EACE and END-IT scores were applied retrospectively. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to assess the discriminatory value of the scores for inpatient mortality and functional decline, as measured by increase in the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) on discharge. RESULTS: Eighty-five patients were included in the study, of which 71 (83.5%) had refractory SE. Inpatient mortality was 36.5%. Sixty - seven (78.8%) of patients suffered functional decline, with a median mRS of 5 upon hospital discharge. The AUCs of the STESS, EMSE-EACE and END-IT scores associated with inpatient mortality were 0.723 (95% CI 0.613-0.833), 0.722 (95% CI 0.609-0.834) and 0.560 (95% CI 0.436-0.684) respectively. The AUCs of the STESS, EMSE-EACE and END-IT scores associated with functional decline were 0.604 (95% CI 0.468-0.741), 0.596 (95% CI 0.439-0.754) and 0.477 (95% CI 0.331-0.623). SIGNIFICANCE: SE was associated with high mortality and morbidity in this cohort of neurology ICU patients requiring cEEG monitoring. The STESS and EMSE-EACE scores had acceptable AUCs for prediction of inpatient mortality. However, the STESS, EMSE-EACE and END-IT were poorly-correlated with discharge functional outcomes. Further refinements of the scores may be necessary among neurology ICU patients for predicting discharge functional outcomes.
