ABSTRACT

Chlamydia pecorum causes subclinical infections in cattle, but sporadic, bovine encephalomyelitis cases have been reported in calves and documented in two instances in European buffalo. An outbreak of Chlamydia pecorum-induced encephalomyelitis and serositis occurred in 3-month-old buffalo calves from Brazil. Initially presenting with pelvic limb incoordination, the calves progressed to lateral recumbency, depression, and death. Necropsies of two calves revealed encephalomyelomalacia, fibrin deposition on the external surface of the pericardium (case 1) and pleural and pericardial fibrosis (case 2). Microscopically, a multifocal to coalescing, necrotizing, neutrophilic and lymphocytic meningoencephalomyelitis with fibrinoid vasculitis and thrombosis was present. Anti-Chlamydia antibody labeling was demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. Bacteriological examination yielded no pathogenic bacteria in the brain or lungs. Chlamydia pecorum was confirmed by PCR. This work describes the gross, histopathological, microbiological, and molecular findings in two cases from an outbreak of Chlamydia pecorum-induced disease in buffalo calves.

ABSTRACT

Background: Recent advancements in nanomedicine and nanotechnology have expanded the scope of multifunctional nanostructures, offering innovative solutions for targeted drug delivery and diagnostic agents in oncology and nuclear medicine. Nanoparticles, particularly those derived from natural sources, hold immense potential in overcoming biological barriers to enhance therapeutic efficacy and diagnostic accuracy. Papain, a natural plant protease derived from Carica papaya, emerges as a promising candidate for green nanotechnology-based applications due to its diverse medicinal properties, including anticancer properties. Purpose: This study presents a novel approach in nanomedicine and oncology, exploring the potential of green nanotechnology by developing and evaluating technetium-99m radiolabeled papain nanoparticles (99mTc-P-NPs) for imaging breast tumors. The study aimed to investigate the efficacy and specificity of these nanoparticles in breast cancer models through preclinical in vitro and in vivo assessments. Methods: Papain nanoparticles (P-NPs) were synthesized using a radiation-driven method and underwent thorough characterization, including size, surface morphology, surface charge, and cytotoxicity assessment. Subsequently, P-NPs were radiolabeled with technetium-99m (99mTc), and in vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to evaluate cellular uptake at tumor sites, along with biodistribution, SPECT/CT imaging, autoradiography, and immunohistochemistry assays, using breast cancer models. Results: The synthesized P-NPs exhibited a size mean diameter of 9.3 ± 1.9 nm and a spherical shape. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of native papain and P-NPs showed low cytotoxicity in HUVEC, MDA-MB231, and 4T1 cells. The achieved radiochemical yield was 94.2 ± 3.1% that were sufficiently stable (≥90%) for 6 h. The tumor uptake achieved in the 4T1 model was 2.49 ± 0.32% IA/g at 2 h and 1.51 ± 0.20% IA/g at 6 h. In the spontaneous breast cancer model, 1.19 ± 0.20% IA/g at 2 h and 0.86 ± 0.31% IA/g at 6 h. SPECT/CT imaging has shown substantial tumor uptake of the new nanoradiopharmaceutical and clear tumor visualization. 99mTc-P-NPs exhibited a high affinity to tumoral cells confirmed by ex vivo autoradiography and immunohistochemistry assays. Conclusion: The findings underscore the potential of green nanotechnology-driven papain nanoparticles as promising agents for molecular imaging of breast and other tumors through SPECT/CT imaging. The results represent a substantial step forward in the application of papain nanoparticles as carriers of diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides to deliver diagnostic/therapeutic payloads site-specifically to tumor sites for the development of a new generation of nanoradiopharmaceuticals.

ABSTRACT

Products derived from the latex of Euphorbia tirucalli were obtained through hydrolysis and column chromatography, resulting in products rich in triterpenes, ingenol 3-esters (I3E), and other derivatives from hydrolysed latex. These products underwent evaluation for their cytotoxic activity against gastric adenocarcinoma cells (AGS). Triterpene derivatives were synthesised, and the selectivity of each product was assessed. The results were compared with the previously described crude latex. Triterpenes and I3E were analysed in silico for their affinity with the active site of PKCδC1b. The hydrolysed latex (free of I3E) exhibited high cytotoxicity, albeit with reduced selectivity. Triterpenes and acetylated triterpenes were more cytotoxic than I3E, although the latter showed greater selectivity. Euphol benzoates and cinnamates showed no cytotoxicity. I3E demonstrated high affinity for the PKCδC1b. In summary, triterpenes exhibited higher cytotoxicity against AGS cells, while I3E displayed greater selectivity. Hydrolysed latex shows promise as a potential candidate for future gastric cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To identify somatic mutations in tumors from young women with triple-negative or luminal breast cancer, through targeted sequencing and to explore the cancer driver potential of these gene variants. METHODS: A customized gene panel was assembled based on data from previous sequencing studies of breast cancer from young women. Triple-negative and luminal tumors and paired blood samples from young breast cancer patients were sequenced, and identified gene variants were searched for their driver potential, in databases and literature. Additionally, the authors performed an exploratory analysis using large, curated databases to evaluate the frequency of somatic mutations in this gene panel in tumors stratified by age groups (every 10 years). RESULTS: A total of 28 young women had their tumoral tissue and blood samples sequenced. Using a customized panel of 64 genes, the authors could detect cancer drivers in 11/12 (91.7 %) TNBC samples and 11/16 (68.7 %) luminal samples. Among TNBC patients, the most frequent cancer driver was TP53, followed by NF1, NOTCH1 and PTPN13. In luminal samples, PIK3CA and GATA3 were the main cancer drivers, and other drivers were GRHL2 and SMURF2. CACNA1E was involved in both TN and luminal BC. The exploratory analysis also indicated a role for SMURF2 in luminal BC development in young patients. CONCLUSIONS: The data further indicates that some cancer drivers are more common in a specific breast cancer subtype from young patients, such as TP53 in TNBC and PIK3CA and GATA3 in luminal samples. These results also provide additional evidence that some genes not considered classical cancer-causing genes, such as CACNA1E, GRHL2 and SMURF2 might be cancer drivers in this age group.

ABSTRACT

Antiretrovirals have improved considerably since the introduction of 3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine (zidovudine or AZT), a molecule with also anticancer effects. Subsequently, a variety of other nucleosides have been synthesized. However, these medications are often associated with serious adverse events and the onset or exacerbation of degenerative processes, diseases, and syndromes, affecting mainly the mitochondria. In this study, we used Caenorhabditis elegans to investigate the toxicity potential of AZT and three new organoselenium derivatives with modifications in the 5' position of the sugar ring in place of the 5'-OH group, with the insertion of a neutral, an electron-withdrawing and an electron-donating group attached to the aryl selenol moiety: 5'-seleno-(4-chloro-phenyl)-3-(amino)-thymidine (ASAT-4-Cl), 5'-seleno-(phenyl)-3-(amino)-thymidine (ASAT-Ph), and 5'-seleno-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(amino)- thymidine (ASAT-4-OMe). Analyzes included worm survival, behavior parameters, high-resolution respirometry, citrate synthase activity, and ATP levels. Although all compounds negatively affected C. elegans, ASAT-4-Cl and ASAT-Ph showed lower toxicity compared to AZT, especially in mitochondrial viability and ATP production. Therefore, more studies must be carried out on the use of these new compounds as pharmacological interventions.

ABSTRACT

O Brasil vive uma transição demográfica que favorece o aparecimento e desenvolvimento de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis (DCNT). Em um cenário em que as DCNT estão entre as principais causas de mortes, reforçar a importância de uma alimentação saudável é imprescindível, e medidas preventivas tomam lugar de destaque. Pensando nisso, foram realizadas 11 intervenções de educação alimentar e nutricional em um grupo de atividade física intergeracional, com o objetivo de promover autonomia alimentar. O estudo contou com 25 participantes, na faixa etária de 37 a 83 anos, sendo a maior incidência de 61 a 69 anos (n=12) e predominância de pessoas do gênero feminino (92%). Os parâmetros para avaliar o grupo foram os feedbacks das(os) participantes e o grau de adesão, no qual houve aumento significativo ao longo do período interventivo. Destaca-se a importância de ampliar a abordagem dos hábitos alimentares saudáveis em diversos ambientes, sendo os grupos de atividades físicas um campo fértil, que requer a adaptação da linguagem e formato das atividades, considerando o nível de escolaridade das(os) participantes. Assim, a educação alimentar e nutricional pode ser usada como ferramenta efetiva para a promoção da saúde, a prevenção e o tratamento de DCNT.


Brazil is undergoing a demographic transition that favors the onset and development of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In a scenario where NCDs feature among the main causes of death, reinforcing the importance of healthy eating is essential and preventive measures should take place. Consequently, eleven Food and Nutritional Education interventions were conducted with an intergenerational physical activity group to promote food autonomy. A total of 25 individuals aged 37 to 83 years participated in the study, with the highest prevalence of 61 to 69 years (n=12) and women (92%). Evaluation parameters were participant feedback and the degree of adherence, which increased significantly over the interventional period. Results highlight the importance of broadening the approach to healthy eating habits in various environments, with physical activity groups being a fertile setting which requires adapting language and the format of activities according to participants' schooling level. Nutritional Food Education can be used as an effective tool for health promotion, prevention and treatment of NCDs.

En un escenario en que entre las principales causas de muerte están las ECNT, se hace imprescindible reforzar la importancia de una alimentación saludable; para ello se destacan las medidas preventivas. Así, se realizaron 11 intervenciones de educación alimentaria y nutricional en un grupo de actividad física intergeneracional, con el objetivo de promover la autonomía alimentaria. Este estudio contó con una muestra de 25 participantes, en la franja etaria de 37 a 83 años, siendo la mayor prevalencia de los de entre 61 y 69 años (n=12), y predominancia de personas del género femenino (92%). Los parámetros que evalúan al grupo fueron las respuestas de las(los) participantes y el grado de adhesión, en el cual hubo un aumento significativo a lo largo de la intervención. Se destaca la importancia de ampliar el foco en los hábitos alimentarios saludables en diversos ambientes, y los grupos de actividades físicas son un campo fértil que requiere la adaptación del lenguaje y el formato de las actividades, considerando el nivel de escolaridad de las(los) participantes. Así, la educación alimentaria nutricional puede ser utilizada como herramienta efectiva para la promoción de la salud, la prevención y el tratamiento de las ECNT.

ABSTRACT

To assess the antibacterial effectiveness of Lippia macrophylla essential oil (LMEO) against multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates, both as a standalone treatment and in combination with conventional antibiotics. LMEO demonstrated a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of A. baumannii, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) below 500µg/mL. Notably, LMEO was capable of reversing the antibiotic resistance of clinical isolates or reducing their MIC values when used in combination with antibiotics, showing synergistic (FICI ≤ 0.5) or additive effects. The combination of LMEO and imipenem was particularly effective, displaying synergistic interactions for most isolates. Ultrastructural analyses supported these findings, revealing that the combination of LMEO + ceftazidime compromised the membrane integrity of the Acb35 isolate, leading to cytoplasmic leakage and increased formation of Outer Membrane Vesicles (OMVs). Taken together our results point for the use of LMEO alone or in combination as an antibacterial agent against A. baumannii. These findings offer promising avenues for utilizing LMEO as a novel antibacterial strategy against drug-resistant infections in healthcare settings, underscoring the potential of essential oils in enhancing antibiotic efficacy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: to identify in the literature the main nursing diagnoses according to the NANDA-I diagnostic classification for people hospitalized with heart failure. METHODS: an integrative literature review, carried out in February 2019 and updated in July 2023, in the MEDLINE via PubMed, LILACS, SciELO and CINAHL databases. Given the use of acronym PEO, studies without a time cut in Portuguese, English and Spanish were included. Descriptive analysis was carried out to present the identified information. RESULTS: analysis of 27 articles identified 24 nursing diagnoses, with emphasis on Decreased Cardiac Output, Excessive Fluid Volume, Decreased Activity Tolerance and Fatigue. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: evidence can contribute to better diagnostic decisions centered on people with heart failure in search of more assertive health results and have the potential to support future studies on a possible syndromic pattern in this population.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess whether awake bruxism and masticatory muscle activity could be related to external root resorption (ERR) in second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients, with requests for a cone-beam, computed tomography, were divided into two groups: ERR (patients with ERR in the second molar, n = 30), and control group (n = 30). Awake bruxism was assessed through the Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC) and an ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to assess the masseter and anterior temporal muscle function. Normality and homogeneity of variances were demonstrated. Descriptive analysis was performed, using the T-test and Chi-square test to compare the characteristics of the groups. A multiple regression model was performed. RESULTS: The ERR group presented more non-functional oral activities related to awake bruxism than the control group, according to OBC (p = 0.027) and EMA (p = 0.035). In addition, the ERR group had higher EMG activity than the control group in rest and isotonic protocols (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Awake bruxism and greater masticatory muscle activity seem to be related to the presence of ERR in second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results of the present study can reinforce the theory that triggering ERR in the second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars may be related to mechanical forces coming from the masticatory function.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: to analyze the risk areas for tuberculosis and the influences of social protection on the development of treatment for the disease in the municipality of São Luís, Maranhão. METHODS: this is explanatory sequential mixed method research. In the quantitative phase, the data were obtained from the Notifiable Diseases Information System from 2010 to 2019, with georeferencing being carried out to identify areas vulnerable to tuberculosis. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were carried out with individuals who received social benefits. RESULTS: 7,381 cases were geocoded, and, from the purely spatial scanning analysis, it was possible to identify 13 spatial clusters of risk. As for the interviews, there was a positive relationship between patient improvement and receiving benefits. CONCLUSIONS: geographic space and social determinants are relevant for reorienting monitoring actions for the conditions that generate the health-disease process.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders for upper limbs (UL-WMSDs) form a complex of occupational diseases common to many professions worldwide. UL-WMSDs are manifested in most cases by pain, resulting in musculoskeletal discomfort. OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to evaluate the perception of musculoskeletal discomfort in workers from the interior of the Brazilian states of Alagoas and Bahia through the construction of a scale to assess musculoskeletal discomfort for upper limb. METHODS: The discomfort assessment scale was constructed from self-reported pain symptoms by 420 workers from the inner regions of the Brazilian states of Alagoas and Bahia. The reliability and dimensionality of the collected data were analyzed by McDonald's Omega and exploratory factor analysis, respectively. Item Response Theory (IRT) was used to create parameters for the discomfort scale. RESULTS: The musculoskeletal discomfort metric was constructed from the workers' response with six levels (varying from minimum discomfort to maximum discomfort). At the lowest level of the scale, workers indicated symptoms in the shoulders and wrists were rare. At the highest level of the scale, daily pain symptoms are reported in all regions of the upper limbs. The shoulders are the last region to develop extreme pain symptoms. CONCLUSION: The metric was created to present satisfactory psychometric properties and capable measurement of the workers' level of musculoskeletal discomfort based on self-reported pain symptoms. Therefore, the metric can support measuring discomfort, contributing to decisions that improve a healthier occupational environment for the worker.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of Candida species resistant to traditional antifungal drugs is increasing globally. This issue significantly impacts patients' lives and increases healthcare expenses, confirming the need to develop novel therapeutic strategies. Recently, a thermostable trypsin inhibitor named ShTI (11.558 kDa), which has antibacterial effects on Staphylococcus aureus, was isolated from Salvia hispanica L. (chia) seeds. This study aimed to assess the antifungal effect of ShTI against Candida species and its synergism with fluconazole and to evaluate its mode of action. Preliminary toxicological studies on mouse fibroblasts were also performed. ShTI exhibited antifungal effects against C. parapsilosis (ATCC® 22,019), C. krusei (ATCC® 6258), and six clinical fluconazole-resistant strains of C. albicans (2), C. parapsilosis (2), and C. tropicalis (2). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were 4.1 µM (inhibiting 50% of the isolates) and 8.2 µM (inhibiting 100% of the isolates). Additionally, when combined with fluconazole, ShTI had a synergistic effect on C. albicans, altering the morphological structure of the yeast. The mode of action of ShTI against C. krusei (ATCC® 6258) and C. albicans involves cell membrane permeabilization, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species, the formation of pseudohyphae, pore formation, and consequently, cell death. In addition, ShTI (8.65 and 17.3 µM) had noncytotoxic and nongenotoxic effects on L929 mouse fibroblasts. These findings suggest that ShTI could be a promising antimicrobial candidate, but further research is necessary to advance its application as a novel antifungal agent.

This material is the result of an interview with José Augusto Alves de Britto, a physician who served as director of the Fernandes Figueira Institute from 2001 to 2008. It covers different aspects of the history of the institution, such as research development, health care, and transformations in the daily routine there. It is part of a project to document and investigate the history of the Fernandes Figueira Institute, which celebrates its one hundredth anniversary in 2024.


O depoimento resulta de entrevista realizada com José Augusto Alves de Britto, médico pediatra que ocupou o cargo de diretor do Instituto Fernandes Figueira entre 2001 e 2008. O relato do depoente aborda diferentes aspectos da história do instituto, como o desenvolvimento da pesquisa e do cuidado à saúde e transformações no cotidiano institucional. O depoimento faz parte de um projeto que documenta e investiga a história do Instituto Fernandes Figueira, que completa seu centenário em 2024.

The fixed oil from the inner mesocarp of Caryocar coriaceum Wittm. is used in the Chapada do Araripe region of Brazil for the treatment of genitourinary candidiasis. This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, antifungal activity, reduction of fungal virulence, and the preliminary toxicity of the fixed oil from the inner mesocarp of C. coriaceum tested against three Candida yeasts. The oil was characterized by gas chromatography (GC-MS and GC-FID). Antifungal activity was assessed using the serial microdilution method. Additionally, the potential of the oil as an enhancer of fluconazole action was tested at sub-inhibitory concentrations (MIC/8). The mechanism of action of C. coriaceum fixed oil was determined by evaluating the inhibition of morphological transition in Candida spp. The chemical composition of the fixed oil of C. coriaceum comprised both unsaturated and saturated fatty acids. Oleic (61 %) and palmitic (33 %) acids were the major constituents. Regarding its anti-Candida activity, the oil inhibited the growth of C. albicans (IC50 : 371 µg/mL) and C. tropicalis (IC50 : 830 µg/mL). Furthermore, the oil reversed the antifungal resistance of C. albicans and C. tropicalis, restoring the susceptibility to fluconazole and reducing their IC50 from 12.33 µg/mL and 362 µg/mL to 0.22 µg/mL and 13.93 µg/mL, respectively. The fixed oil of C. coriaceum completely inhibited the morphological transition of C. albicans and C. tropicalis at a concentration of 512 µg/mL, but exhibited limited low antifungal potential against C. krusei. The observed antifungal activity may be attributed to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, the oil showed no toxic effect on the Drosophila melanogaster in vivo model. The fixed oil from the inner mesocarp of C. coriaceum emerge as a strong candidate for the development of new pharmaceutical formulations to treat infections caused by Candida spp.

ABSTRACT

The Brazilian National Network of Alternative Methods (RENAMA), which is linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, is currently comprised of 51 laboratories from CROs, academia, industry and government. RENAMA's aim is to develop and validate new approach methodologies (NAMs), as well as train researchers and disseminate information on their use - thus reducing Brazilian, and consequently Latin American, dependence on external technology. Moreover, it promotes the adoption of NAMs by educators and trained researchers, as well as the implementation of good laboratory practice (GLP) and the use of certified products. The RENAMA network started its activities in 2012, and was originally comprised of three central laboratories - the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO); the National Institute of Quality Control in Health (INCQS); and the National Brazilian Biosciences Laboratory (LNBio) - and ten associated laboratories. In 2022, RENAMA celebrated its 10th anniversary, a milestone commemorated by the organisation of a meeting attended by different stakeholders, including the RENAMA-associated laboratories, academia, non-governmental organisations and industry. Ninety-six participants attended the meeting, held on 26 May 2022 in Balneário Camboriú, SC, Brazil, as part of the programme of the XXIII Brazilian Congress of Toxicology 2022. Significant moments of the RENAMA were remembered, and new goals and discussion themes were established. The lectures highlighted recent innovations in the toxicological sciences that have translated into the assessment of consumer product safety through the use of human-relevant NAMs instead of the use of existing animal-based approaches. The challenges and opportunities in accepting such practices for regulatory purposes were also presented and discussed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIM: Maxillofacial trauma resulting from intimate partner violence (IPV) represents an important oral health problem. In this sense, the aim of this study was to investigate the spatial-temporal distribution of maxillofacial trauma resulting from IPV against women, using a geostatistical approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An ecological study was carried out including the analysis of confirmed IPV cases against women treated at a Center for Forensic Medicine and Dentistry over a four-year observation period, as well as the evaluation of population data from the victims' places of residence extracted from the last demographic census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Statistical analysis included: (i) finite mixture modeling to establish incidence trajectory patterns; (ii) Getis-Ord indicator (Gi*) for spatial autocorrelation; (iii) spatial regression analysis (p < .05). RESULTS: Two distinct trajectory patterns (TP1 and TP2) related to IPV incidence were identified using finite mixture modeling, suggesting spatial-temporal disparities at the regional level. In TP1, it was observed that IPV incidence was relatively low and remained stable over time, covering almost two-thirds (62.0%) of investigated spatial units. TP2 was characterized by higher IPV incidence with a tendency to increase in the last year, including more than one-third of neighborhoods (38.0%). Autocorrelation analysis showed a predominance of hot areas (hotspots) in the Eastern zone (p < .05) and in the Western zone (p < .05); and cold areas (coldspots) in the Northern zone (p < .05). In addition, statistically significant association was observed among neighborhoods with higher percentage of households with family householder without income and higher incidence of maxillofacial trauma resulting from IPV against women (ß = 5.305; SE = 1.741; p = .002). CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate an association between higher IPV incidence against women, maxillofacial trauma, and socio-spatial vulnerability.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the risk areas for tuberculosis and the influences of social protection on the development of treatment for the disease in the municipality of São Luís, Maranhão. Methods: this is explanatory sequential mixed method research. In the quantitative phase, the data were obtained from the Notifiable Diseases Information System from 2010 to 2019, with georeferencing being carried out to identify areas vulnerable to tuberculosis. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were carried out with individuals who received social benefits. Results: 7,381 cases were geocoded, and, from the purely spatial scanning analysis, it was possible to identify 13 spatial clusters of risk. As for the interviews, there was a positive relationship between patient improvement and receiving benefits. Conclusions: geographic space and social determinants are relevant for reorienting monitoring actions for the conditions that generate the health-disease process.


RESUMEN Objetivos: analizar las áreas de riesgo para la tuberculosis y las influencias de la protección social en el desarrollo del tratamiento de la enfermedad en el municipio de São Luís, Maranhão. Métodos: se trata de una investigación explicativa de método mixto secuencial. En la fase cuantitativa, los datos se obtuvieron del Sistema de Información de Enfermedades de Declaración Obligatoria del 2010 al 2019, realizándose georreferenciación para identificar áreas vulnerables a la tuberculosis. En la fase cualitativa se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a personas que recibían beneficios sociales. Resultados: se geocodificaron 7.381 casos y, a partir del análisis de escaneo puramente espacial, fue posible identificar 13 grupos espaciales de riesgo. En cuanto a las entrevistas, hubo una relación positiva entre la mejora del paciente y la recepción de beneficios. Conclusiones: el espacio geográfico y los determinantes sociales son relevantes para reorientar las acciones de seguimiento de las condiciones que generan el proceso salud-enfermedad.

Na fase qualitativa, realizaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas com indivíduos que recebiam benefício social. Resultados: foram geocodificados 7.381 casos, e, a partir da análise de varredura puramente espacial, foi possível identificar 13 aglomerados espaciais de risco. Quanto às entrevistas, verificou-se uma relação positiva entre a melhora dos pacientes e o recebimento de benefícios. Conclusões: o espaço geográfico e os determinantes sociais são relevantes para reorientação das ações de monitoramento das condições geradoras do processo saúde-doença.
