ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize healthcare, for example via decision support systems, computer vision approaches, or AI-based prevention tools. Initial results from AI applications in healthcare show promise but are rarely translated into clinical practice successfully and ethically. This occurs despite an abundance of "Trustworthy AI" guidelines. How can we explain the translational gaps of AI in healthcare? This paper offers a fresh perspective on this problem, showing that failing translation of healthcare AI markedly arises from a lack of an operational definition of "trust" and "trustworthiness". This leads to (a) unintentional misuse concerning what trust (worthiness) is and (b) the risk of intentional abuse by industry stakeholders engaging in ethics washing. By pointing out these issues, we aim to highlight the obstacles that hinder translation of Trustworthy medical AI to practice and prevent it from fulfilling its unmet promises.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is aggressive with poor median overall survival (OS) ranging from 8 to 13 months. There exists considerable heterogeneity in survival at the individual patient level. To better understand the survival heterogeneity and improve risk stratification, our study aims to identify the factors influencing survival, utilizing a large patient sample from the National Cancer Database (NCDB). METHODS: Women diagnosed with metastatic TNBC from 2010 to 2020 in the NCDB were included. Demographic, clinicopathological, and treatment data and overall survival (OS) outcomes were collected. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to estimate OS. The log-rank test was used to identify OS differences between groups for each variable in the univariate analysis. For the multivariate analysis, the Cox proportional hazard model with backward elimination was used to identify factors affecting OS. Adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals are presented. RESULTS: In this sample, 2273 women had a median overall survival of 13.6 months. Factors associated with statistically significantly worse OS included older age, higher comorbidity scores, specific histologies, higher number of metastatic sites, presence of liver or other site metastases in those with only one metastatic site (excluding brain metastases), presence of cranial and extra-cranial metastases, lack of chemotherapy, lack of immunotherapy, lack of surgery to distant sites, lack of radiation to distant sites, and receipt of palliative treatment to alleviate symptoms. In the multivariate analysis, comorbidity score, histology, number of metastatic sites, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy had a statistically significant effect on OS. CONCLUSIONS: Through NCDB analysis, we have identified prognostic factors for metastatic TNBC. These findings will help individualize prognostication at diagnosis, optimize treatment strategies, and facilitate patient stratification in future clinical trials.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: DR/ER-MPH (formerly HLD200) is an evening-dosed delayed-release and extended-release methylphenidate approved for the treatment of ADHD in patients ≥6 years. Post hoc analyses of two pivotal Phase 3 trials: HLD200-107 (NCT02493777) and HLD200-108 (NCT02520388) evaluated emotional lability (EL) with DR/ER-MPH treatment. METHODS: Differences in Conners Global Index-Parent (CGI-P) EL subscale scores and age- and gender-adjusted T-scores over an open-label titration phase (HLD200-107) and between treatment and placebo groups at endpoint (HLD200-108) were evaluated. RESULTS: In HLD200-107 (N = 117) mean CGI-P EL subscale scores improved from 5.3 to 1.3 (p < .0001) after 6 weeks; in HLD200-108 significant improvements were observed in the treatment group (n = 81) versus placebo (n = 80; 3.11 vs. 4.08; p = .0053). T-scores showed an improvement with DR/ER-MPH treatment in both trials. Few emotional adverse events (AEs) were reported. CONCLUSION: DR/ER-MPH treatment resulted in statistically significant improvements in EL to the level of non-ADHD peers as contextualized by T-scores.

ABSTRACT

While some established undergraduate summer programs are effective across many institutions, these programs may only be available to some principal investigators or may not fully address the diverse needs of incoming undergraduates. This article outlines a 10-week science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) education program designed to prepare undergraduate students for graduate school through a unique model incorporating mentoring dyads and triads, cultural exchanges, and diverse activities while emphasizing critical thinking, research skills, and cultural sensitivity. Specifically, we offer a straightforward and adaptable guide that we have used for mentoring undergraduate students in a laboratory focused on mitochondria and microscopy, but which may be customized for other disciplines. Key components include self-guided projects, journal clubs, various weekly activities such as mindfulness training and laboratory techniques, and a focus on individual and cultural expression. Beyond this unique format, this 10-week program also seeks to offer an intensive research program that emulates graduate-level experiences, offering an immersive environment for personal and professional development, which has led to numerous achievements for past students, including publications and award-winning posters.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the potential of AI-powered personal voice assistants (PVAs) in reducing loneliness and increasing social support among older adults. With the aging population rapidly expanding, innovative solutions are essential. Prior research has indicated the effectiveness of various interactive communication technologies (ICTs) in mitigating loneliness, but studies focusing on PVAs, particularly considering their modality (audio vs. video), are limited. This research aims to fill this gap by evaluating how voice assistants, in both audio and video formats, influence perceived loneliness and social support. This study examined the impact of voice assistant technology (VAT) interventions, both audio-based (A-VAT) and video-based (V-VAT), on perceived loneliness and social support among 34 older adults living alone. Over three months, participants engaged with Amazon Alexa™ PVA through daily routines for at least 30 min. Using a hybrid natural language processing framework, interactions were analyzed. The results showed reductions in loneliness (Z = -2.99, p < 0.01; pre-study loneliness mean = 1.85, SD = 0.61; post-study loneliness mean = 1.65, SD = 0.57), increases in social support post intervention (Z = -2.23, p < 0.05; pre-study social support mean = 5.44, SD = 1.05; post-study loneliness mean = 5.65, SD = 1.20), and a correlation between increased social support and loneliness reduction when the two conditions are combined (ρ = -0.39, p < 0.05). In addition, V-VAT was more effective than A-VAT in reducing loneliness (U = 85.50, p < 0.05) and increasing social support (U = 95, p < 0.05). However, no significant correlation between changes in perceived social support and changes in perceived loneliness was observed in either intervention condition (V-VAT condition: ρ = -0.24, p = 0.37; A-VAT condition: ρ = -0.46, p = 0.06). This study's findings could significantly contribute to developing targeted interventions for improving the well-being of aging adults, addressing a critical global issue.

OBJECTIVE: Plant-based dietary patterns emphasize plant foods and minimize animal-derived foods. We investigated the association between plant-based dietary patterns and diabetes in a community-based U.S. sample of Black and White adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We included middle-aged adults from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study without diabetes at baseline who completed a food-frequency questionnaire (n = 11,965). We scored plant-based diet adherence according to three indices: overall, healthy, and unhealthy plant-based diet indices. Higher overall plant-based diet index (PDI) scores represent greater intakes of all plant foods and lower intakes of animal-derived foods. Higher healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI) scores represent greater healthy plant food intake and lower intakes of animal-derived and unhealthy plant foods. Higher unhealthy plant-based diet index (uPDI) scores represent greater unhealthy plant food intake and lower intakes of animal-derived and healthy plant foods. We used Cox regression to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for incident diabetes (defined according to self-reported diagnosis, medication use, or elevated blood glucose) associated with each index. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 22 years, we identified 4,208 cases of diabetes among subjects. Higher PDI scores were associated with a lower risk of diabetes (quintile 5 vs. 1 HR 0.89 [95% CI 0.80, 0.98]; Ptrend = 0.01). hPDI scores were also inversely associated with diabetes risk (quintile 5 vs. 1 HR 0.85 [95% CI 0.77, 0.94]; Ptrend < 0.001). uPDI scores were not associated with diabetes risk. CONCLUSIONS: A dietary pattern that minimizes animal-derived foods and emphasizes plant foods may reduce diabetes risk.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Loneliness in older adults is a critical issue that negatively affects their well-being. The potential of personal voice assistant (PVA) devices like Amazon's Alexa Echo in reducing loneliness is an emerging area of interest, but it remains under-researched. OBJECTIVE: this study aims to investigate the effect of interaction time and verbal engagement with PVA devices on reducing loneliness among older adults living alone. METHOD: In this experiment, individuals aged 75 and older (n = 15), living alone, were provided with Amazon Alexa Echo devices. They were instructed to interact with the device at least five times a day for a duration of four weeks. The study measured participants' loneliness levels using the UCLA loneliness scale both before and after the study. Additionally, the interaction time and verbal engagement with the device were measured by the total time of use and the total number of intentional commands spoken to Alexa during the four-week period. RESULTS: The findings revealed that the total time spent interacting with Alexa was a significant predictor of loneliness reduction. A mediation analysis indicated an indirect effect, showing that the number of intentional commands spoken to Alexa contributed to loneliness reduction indirectly by increasing the total time spent with the device (verbal engagement → interaction time → loneliness reduction). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that the key to reducing loneliness among older adults through PVA devices is not just initiating verbal interaction, but the overall time devoted to these interactions. While speaking to Alexa is a starting point, it is the duration of engagement that primarily drives loneliness alleviation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are an important cause of airway infections in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF). Isolation of NTM from respiratory specimens of pwCF do not mandate treatment in the absence of clinical and radiologic features of NTM pulmonary disease (NTM-PD), as some pwCF clear the infection without treatment and others do not appear to progress to NTM-PD despite persistent infection. An evidence-based protocol to standardize diagnosis of NTM-PD is needed to systematically identify pwCF who may benefit from treatment. METHODS: In this multicenter observational study, eligible pwCF who are 6 years of age and older and who have had a recent positive NTM culture are systematically evaluated for NTM-PD. Participants are identified based on positive NTM culture results obtained during routine clinical care and following enrollment are evaluated for NTM-PD and CF-related comorbidities. Participants are followed in PREDICT until they meet NTM-PD diagnostic criteria and are ready to initiate NTM treatment, or until study termination. Active participants who have not met these criteria are re-consented every 5 years to enable long-term participation. RESULTS: The primary endpoint will summarize the proportion of participants who meet the NTM-PD diagnosis definition. The time from enrollment to NTM-PD diagnosis will be derived from Kaplan-Meier estimates. CONCLUSION: A prospective protocol to identify NTM-PD in pwCF will test if this standardized approach defines a cohort with signs and symptoms associated with NTM-PD, to assist with clinical decision making and to build a framework for future therapeutic trials. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Understanding factors influencing quality of pediatric end-of-life (EOL) care is necessary to identify interventions to improve family and staff experiences. We characterized pediatric cardiac ICU (PCICU) staff free-text survey responses to contextualize patterns in quality of dying and death (QODD) scoring. DESIGN: This mixed methods study reports on a cross-sectional survey of PCICU staff involved in patient deaths. SETTING: Single, quaternary PCICU from 2019-2021. PARTICIPANTS: Multidisciplinary staff (bedside nurses, allied health professionals, and medical practitioners) rated QODD and voluntarily added free-text responses. We derived descriptive categories of free-text responses using content analysis. Response sentiment was classified as positive, negative or both positive and negative. We compared category and sentiment frequency by discipline, EOL medical intensity, years of experience and QODD score quartiles. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Of 60 deaths and 713 completed staff surveys, 269 (38%) contained free-text responses, including 103 of 269 (38%) from nurses. Of six qualitative categories (i.e., relational dynamics, clinical circumstances, family experiences, emotional expressions, temporal conditions, and structural/situational factors), relational dynamics was most frequent (173 responses). When compared by discipline, family experiences were more common in nursing responses than medical practitioners or allied health. High intensity was associated with infrequent discussion of family experience and greater focus on temporal conditions and clinical circumstances. Emotional expressions and temporal conditions were more common in lowest QODD quartile surveys. Although 45% staff responses contained both sentiments, relational dynamics and family experiences were more likely positive. Negative sentiments were more common in the lowest QODD quartile surveys and responses containing temporal conditions or structural/situational factors. CONCLUSIONS: Synergistic relationships between the multidisciplinary team and family shaped clinician's positive responses. Attention to team dynamics may be a crucial ingredient in interventions to improve EOL care. Our data support that team-based education initiatives should consider differential foci between disciplines and EOL characteristics.

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to identify variations in the clinical use of automatically generated contours that could be attributed to software error, off-label use, or automation bias. METHODS AND MATERIALS: For 500 head and neck patients who were contoured by an in-house automated contouring system, Dice similarity coefficient and added path length were calculated between the contours generated by the automated system and the final contours after editing for clinical use. Statistical process control was used and control charts were generated with control limits at 3 standard deviations. Contours that exceeded the thresholds were investigated to determine the cause. Moving mean control plots were then generated to identify dosimetrists who were editing less over time, which could be indicative of automation bias. RESULTS: Major contouring edits were flagged for: 1.0% brain, 3.1% brain stem, 3.5% left cochlea, 2.9% right cochlea, 4.8% esophagus, 4.1% left eye, 4.0% right eye, 2.2% left lens, 4.9% right lens, 2.5% mandible, 11% left optic nerve, 6.1% right optic nerve, 3.8% left parotid, 5.9% right parotid, and 3.0% of spinal cord contours. Identified causes of editing included unexpected patient positioning, deviation from standard clinical practice, and disagreement between dosimetrist preference and automated contouring style. A statistically significant (P < .05) difference was identified between the contour editing practice of dosimetrists, with 1 dosimetrist editing more across all organs at risk. Eighteen percent (27/150) of moving mean control plots created for 5 dosimetrists indicated the amount of contour editing was decreasing over time, possibly corresponding to automation bias. CONCLUSIONS: The developed system was used to detect statistically significant edits caused by software error, unexpected clinical use, and automation bias. The increased ability to detect systematic errors that occur when editing automatically generated contours will improve the safety of the automatic treatment planning workflow.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Operating rooms (ORs) disproportionally contribute 20% to 33% of hospital waste nationwide and therefore have a major impact on hospital waste management. Seventy percent of general OR waste is incorrectly eliminated as clinical waste, which compounds unnecessary financial burden and produces negative environmental impact. The primary purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of waste segregation education for OR anesthesia staff on improving waste segregation compliance in the OR. METHODS: A waste segregation QI project was implemented at a 19-OR hospital. Sharps bins in each OR were monitored for weight in pounds and 6 ORs were monitored for percent compliance both pre- and post-institution of a waste segregation education. In addition, a waste segregation knowledge assessment, waste segregation barriers assessment, and a demographic survey were administered to anesthesia staff. Twenty-two certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), 13 anesthesiologists, and 4 anesthesia technicians responded to the initial surveys and assessments while 30 of these original 39 participants (77%) responded following the educational intervention. A cost analysis was calculated pre- and post-implementation by multiplying total weight of the sharps bins by the price per pound of sharps. RESULTS: Twenty-three percent of participants reported having formal waste segregation training. Survey responses revealed that the greatest barrier to waste segregation involved bin location (56.4%), followed by lack of time to segregate (25.6%), lack of knowledge of what content goes in the bin (25.6%), and lack of incentive (25.6%). A waste segregation knowledge assessment showed improvement from pre- ( M = 9.18, SD = 1.66) to post-implementation ( M = 9.90, SD = 1.64). Pre-implementation sharps bin compliance was 50.70% while post-implementation bin compliance improved to 58.44%. A 27.64% decrease in sharps disposal cost occurred following implementation, which is estimated to produce a $2964 cost savings per year. CONCLUSIONS: Waste segregation education for anesthesia staff increased their waste management knowledge, improved sharps waste bin compliance, and produced an overall cost savings.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is the most rapidly spreading viral vector-borne disease in the world. Promising new dengue vaccines have contributed to a growing consensus that effective dengue control will require integrated strategies of vaccination and vector control. In this qualitative study, we explored the perspectives of residents of Fortaleza, Brazil on acceptability of a hypothetical safe and effective dengue vaccine, specific drivers of dengue vaccine acceptance or hesitance, and the expected impact of dengue vaccination on their personal vector control practices. METHODS: A total of 43 in-depth interviews were conducted from April to June 2022 with Fortaleza residents from a diverse range of educational and professional backgrounds, with and without recent personal experiences of symptomatic dengue infections. Data were analyzed using the principles of inductive grounded theory methodology. RESULTS: Our findings indicate that knowledge of dengue transmission, symptoms, and prevention methods was strong across respondents. Respondents described willingness to accept a hypothetical dengue vaccine for themselves and their children, while emphasizing that the vaccine must be demonstrably safe and effective. Respondents expressed diverse perspectives on how receiving a safe and effective dengue vaccine might influence their personal vector control behaviors, relating these behaviors to their perception of risk from other Aedes mosquito-carried infections and beliefs about the role of vector control in maintaining household cleanliness. CONCLUSIONS: Our study findings provide community-level perspectives on dengue vaccination and its potential impact on personal vector control behavior for policymakers and program managers in Fortaleza to consider as new dengue vaccines become available. With the introduction of any new dengue vaccine, community perspectives and emerging concerns that may drive vaccine hesitancy should be continuously sought out. Improved urban infrastructure and efforts to engage individuals and communities in vector control may be needed to optimize the impact of future dengue vaccinations and prevent rising cases of other arboviruses such as Zika and chikungunya.

ABSTRACT

Translating evidence-based practices (EBPs) and quality improvement (QI) initiatives to the bedside is a significant need among hospitals and outpatient settings to improve the provision of quality nursing care. However, health-care systems continue to struggle with implementing and sustaining EBPs. To improve the application of EBPs and QI initiatives, hospitals should consider using Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)-prepared nurses in Quality Improvement roles, as DNP graduates have acquired unique expertise in these topics. However, health-care settings do not routinely maximize the use of DNP-prepared nurses in these roles. This article provides an overview of the challenges to understanding the value and impact of DNP-prepared nurses, along with recommendations and opportunities for future practice.

ABSTRACT

Long-acting analgesics such as extended-release buprenorphine are desirable in rodent medicine because they reduce need for administration of additional medication and provide stable drug levels. We measured the serum concentrations of buprenorphine after topical administration of a long-acting transdermal buprenorphine (LAT-bup) solution to female C57BL/6 mice. We hypothesized that LAT-bup dosed topically at 40mg/kg would achieve serum drug concentrations of greater than 1ng/mL, which is considered the therapeutic level for adequate analgesia in rodents. LAT-bup administered at 40mg/kg resulted in serum drug concentrations above 1ng/mL for all mice at time points 2, 4, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h (n = 3/time point), as assessed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. No adverse effects were noted when LAT-bup was dosed at either 30mg/kg or 40mg/kg. We conclude that LAT-bup is easily administered to mice and achieves adequate blood levels for 96 h. Further studies evaluating analgesic efficacy are indicated.

ABSTRACT

Immediate expander/implant-based breast reconstruction after mastectomy has become more sought after by patients. Although many patients choose this technique due to good aesthetic outcomes, lack of donor site morbidity, and shorter procedure times, it is not without complications. The most reported complications include seroma, infection, hematoma, mastectomy flap necrosis, wound dehiscence, and implant exposure, with an overall complication rate as high as 45%. Closed incision negative pressure therapy (ciNPT) has shown value in wound healing and reducing complications; however, the current literature is inconclusive. We aimed to examine if ciNPT improves outcomes for patients receiving this implant-based reconstruction. Methods: This is a retrospective single-institution study evaluating the ciNPT device, 3M Prevena Restor BellaForm, on breast reconstruction patients. The study was performed between July 1, 2019 and October 30, 2020, with 125 patients (232 breasts). Seventy-seven patients (142 breasts) did not receive the ciNPT dressing, and 48 patients (90 breasts) received the ciNPT dressing. Primary outcomes were categorized by major or minor complications. Age, BMI, and final drain removal were summarized using medians and quartiles, and were compared with nonparametric Mann-Whitney test. Categorical variables were compared using chi-square or Fisher exact test. Results: There was a statistically significant reduction in major complications in the ciNPT group versus the standard dressing group (P = 0.0247). Drain removal time was higher in the ciNPT group. ABSTRACT

The intracellular milieu is crowded and heterogeneous, and this can have profound consequences for biomolecule motions and biochemical kinetics. Macromolecular crowding has been traditionally studied in artificial crowders like Ficoll and dextran or globular proteins such as bovine serum albumin. It is, however, not clear if the effects of artificial crowders on such phenomena are the same as the crowding that is experienced in a heterogeneous biological environment. Bacterial cells, for example, are composed of heterogeneous biomolecules with different sizes, shapes, and charges. Using crowders composed of one of three different pretreatments of bacterial cell lysate (unmanipulated, ultracentrifuged, and anion exchanged), we examine the effects of crowding on the diffusivity of a model polymer. We measure the translational diffusivity, via diffusion NMR, of the test polymer polyethylene glycol (PEG) in these bacterial cell lysates. We show that the small (Rg ∼ 5 nm) test polymer shows a modest decrease in self-diffusivity with increasing crowder concentration for all lysate treatments. The corresponding self-diffusivity decrease in the artificial Ficoll crowder is much more pronounced. Moreover, a comparison of the rheological response of biological and artificial crowders shows that while the artificial crowder Ficoll exhibits a Newtonian response even at high concentrations, the bacterial cell lysate is markedly non-Newtonian; it behaves like a shear-thinning fluid with a yield stress. While at any concentration the rheological properties are sensitive to both lysate pretreatment and batch-to-batch variations, the PEG diffusivity is nearly unaffected by the type of lysate pretreatment.

ABSTRACT

The Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity, explored the clay mineral-bearing Glen Torridon region for 1 Martian year between January 2019 and January 2021, including a short campaign onto the Greenheugh pediment. The Glen Torridon campaign sought to characterize the geology of the area, seek evidence of habitable environments, and document the onset of a potentially global climatic transition during the Hesperian era. Curiosity roved 5 km in total throughout Glen Torridon, from the Vera Rubin ridge to the northern margin of the Greenheugh pediment. Curiosity acquired samples from 11 drill holes during this campaign and conducted the first Martian thermochemolytic-based organics detection experiment with the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite. The lowest elevations within Glen Torridon represent a continuation of lacustrine Murray formation deposits, but overlying widespread cross bedded sandstones indicate an interval of more energetic fluvial environments and prompted the definition of a new stratigraphic formation in the Mount Sharp group called the Carolyn Shoemaker formation. Glen Torridon hosts abundant phyllosilicates yet remains compositionally and mineralogically comparable to the rest of the Mount Sharp group. Glen Torridon samples have a great diversity and abundance of sulfur-bearing organic molecules, which are consistent with the presence of ancient refractory organic matter. The Glen Torridon region experienced heterogeneous diagenesis, with the most striking alteration occurring just below the Siccar Point unconformity at the Greenheugh pediment. Results from the pediment campaign show that the capping sandstone formed within the Stimson Hesperian aeolian sand sea that experienced seasonal variations in wind direction.

ABSTRACT

Dried fruits contain many bioactive compounds broadly classified as phytochemicals including phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids, proanthocyanidins, stilbenes, chalcones/dihydrochalcones, and phytoestrogens. These compounds have antioxidant effects that may benefit health. Dried fruits are also a diverse group of foods with varying fibre contents. The evaluation of the biological activity of these bioactive compounds, including their bioaccessibility and bioavailability, may contribute to the understanding of the health effects of dried fruits. Limited evidence suggests that dried fruits (raisins, cranberries, dates, and prunes) affect human gut microbiota composition in a potentially beneficial manner (in terms of effects on Bifidobacteria, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Lactobacillus, Ruminococcaceae, Klebsiella spp., and Prevotella spp.). There is little epidemiological evidence about the association of dried fruit consumption with cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality, as well as the risk of type 2 diabetes or obesity. Clinical trial evidence for the effects of dried fruit consumption on cardiovascular risk factors, including glycaemic control, is mixed. Clinical trial evidence suggests prunes might preserve bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Consumption of dried fruits is associated with higher-quality diets. Studies are needed to increase our understanding of the health effects of dried fruits and the underlying biological mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

Hong Kong's healthcare system is moving toward preventive and primary care to address the complicated demands of the aging population. Chiropractic professionals are in an advantageous position to support a prevention-focused strategy by identifying musculoskeletal problems early, reducing risks, and promoting healthy lifestyles. This article examines how the involvement of chiropractors in public health programs could improve population health in Hong Kong and boost primary care. The inclusion of chiropractors in district health centers and other initiatives would offer safer and more cost-effective choices for treating functional problems and chronic pain. Chiropractors should be involved in policymakers' attempts to create a sustainable healthcare system that meets Hong Kong's long-term healthcare requirements.
