Phosphaphenalenes, extended π conjugates with the incorporation of phosphorus, are attractive avenues towards molecular materials for the applications in organic electronics, but their electron accepting ability have not been investigated. In this study, we present systematic studies on the reductive behavior of a representative phosphaphenalene and its oxide by chemical and electrochemical methods. The chemical reduction of the phosphaphenalene by alkali metals reveals the facile P‒C bond cleavage to form phosphaphenalenide anion, which functions as a transfer block for structure modification on the phosphorus atom. In contrast, the pentavalent P-oxide reacts with one or two equivalents of elemental sodium to form stable radical anion and dianion salts, respectively.

2D semiconductor heterostructures exhibit broad application prospects. However, regular nanochannels of heterostructures rarely caught the researcher's attention. Herein, a metal-organic framework (i.e., Cu3(HHTP)2) and transition metal dichalcogenides (i.e., MoS2)-based multilayer van der Waals heterostructure (i.e., Cu3(HHTP)2/MoS2) realized band alignment-dominated light-driven ion transport and further light-enhanced ionic energy generation. High-density channels of the heterostructure provide high-speed pathways for ion transmembrane transport. Upon light illumination, a net ionic flow occurs at a symmetric concentration, suggesting a directional cationic transport from Cu3(HHTP)2 to MoS2. This is because Cu3(HHTP)2/MoS2 heterostructures containing type-II band alignment can generate photovoltaic motive force through light-induced efficient charge separation to drive ion transport. After introducing into the ionic power generation system, the maximum power density under illumination can achieve notable improvement under different concentration differences. In addition to the photovoltaic motive force, type-II band alignment and material defect capture-induced surface charge increase also raise ion selectivity and flux, greatly facilitating ionic energy generation. This work demonstrates that 2D semiconductor heterostructures with rational band alignment can not only be a potential platform for optimizing light-enhanced ionic energy harvesting but also provide a new thought for biomimetic iontronic devices.

Ecofriendly fabrics with antibacterial and anti-adhesion properties have been attracted an increasing attention in recent years. Herein, natural menthol modified polyacrylate (PMCA) antibacterial adhesion agent was synthesized by esterification and polymerisation while natural pterostilbene-grafted-chitosan (PGC) antibacterial agent was prepared through Mannich reaction. The antibacterial and anti-adhesion cotton fabric was fabricated through durable PMCA dip finishing and then layer-by-layer self-assembly of PGC. The results showed that the antibacterial adhesion rates and antibacterial rates of the dual-function cotton fabric against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli reached up to 99.9 %. Its antibacterial adhesion rates improved by 36.1 % and 40.1 % in comparison with those of cotton fabric treated by menthol alone. Meanwhile against S. aureus, the dual-function cotton fabrics improved the antibacterial rates by 56.7 % and 36.4 %, respectively, from those of chitosan- and pterostilbene-treated fabrics. Against E. coli, the improvements were 89.4 % and 24.8 %, respectively. After 20 household washings, the dual-function cotton fabric maintained >80 % of its original anti-adhesion and antibacterial rates against both species. The dual-function cotton fabric also possessed safe and excellent wearability.

The concentration prediction of PM2.5 plays a vital role in controlling the air and improving the environment. This paper proposes a prediction model (namely EEMD-ALSTM) based on Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD), Attention Mechanism and Long Short-Term Memory network (LSTM). Through the combination of decomposition and LSTM, attention mechanism is introduced to realize the prediction of PM2.5 concentration. The advantage of EEMD-ALSTM model is that it decomposes and combines the original data using the method of ensemble empirical mode decomposition, reduces the high nonlinearity of the original data, and Specially reintroduction the attention mechanism, which enhances the extraction and retention of data features by the model. Through experimental comparison, it was found that the EEMD-ALSTM model reduced its MAE and RMSE by about 15% while maintaining the same R2 correlation coefficient, and the stability of the model in the prediction process was also improved significantly.

The effects of high-resistant starch (RS) content rice flour, psyllium husk powder (PHP), and psyllium powder (PP) on the edible quality and starch digestibility of rice noodles were investigated in this study. High-RS rice noodles showed lower digestibility but poor edible quality. With the addition of PHP and PP, high-RS rice noodles' cooking and texture quality were improved significantly, especially the breakage rates, cooking losses, and chewiness (P < 0.05). Compared to traditional white rice noodle's estimated glycemic index (eGI) of 86.69, the eGI values for 5PHP-RN and 5PHP-2PP-RN were significantly decreased to 66.74 and 65.77, achieving a medium GI status (P < 0.05). This resulted from the high amylose and lipid content in the modified rice flour and psyllium, leading to increase of starch crystallinity. Besides, based on the analysis of Pearson's correlation, it can be found that PHP rich in insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) could improve high-RS noodle cooking and texture quality better, while PP rich in soluble dietary fiber (SDF) can further reduce the RDS content and its starch digestibility. Therefore, utilizing modified rice flour with an appropriate addition of PHP and PP can be considered an effective strategy for producing superior-quality lower glycemic index rice noodles.

Introduction: In order to enhance the effectiveness of resource allocation, regions must tailor their responses to their specific epidemiological and economic situations. Methods: Utilizing Spectrum software, we projected the cost-effectiveness of 10 chosen HIV interventions in six cities in eastern China from 2019 to 2028. We assessed three scenarios - Base, Achievable, and Idealized - for each city. The analysis included the projected number of HIV infections and deaths averted, as well as the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios for each intervention in the six cities. Results: In Shijiazhuang, Wuxi, Yantai, and Zhenjiang, cities with initially low antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage, ART showed significant effectiveness, especially for males. Conversely, in Foshan and Ningbo, where ART coverage was notably high, oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for men who have sex with men (MSM) proved effective in the Idealized scenario. MSM outreach, ART for males, and ART for females demonstrated cost-effectiveness across all six cities in both Achievable and Idealized scenarios at the predefined thresholds for each city. Discussion: Maintaining an appropriate coverage rate for outreach to MSM can lead to cost-effectiveness. In cities with low ART coverage, scaling up ART remains a crucial intervention. In regions with high ART coverage, consideration may be given to the utilization of oral PrEP for MSM individuals, requiring budget allocation.

Facial expressions in infants have been noted to create a spatial attention bias when compared with adult faces. Yet, there is limited understanding of how adults perceive the timing of infant facial expressions. To investigate this, we used both infant and adult facial expressions in a temporal bisection task. In Experiment 1, we compared duration judgments of neutral infant and adult faces. The results revealed that participants felt that neutral infant faces lasted for a shorter time than neutral adult faces, independent of participant sex. Experiment 2 employed sad (crying) facial expressions. Here, the female participants perceived that the infants' faces were displayed for a longer duration than the adults' faces, whereas this distinction was not evident among the male participants. These findings highlight the influence of the babyface schema on time perception, nuanced by emotional context and sex-based individual variances.

In this study, five C18 fatty acids (FA) with different numbers of double bonds and configurations including stearic acid (SA), oleic acid (OA), elaidic acid (EA), linoleic acid (LA), and α-linolenic acid (ALA), were selected to prepare highland barely starch (HBS)-FA complexes to modulate digestibility and elaborate the underlying mechanism. The results showed that HBS-SA had the highest complex index (34.18 %), relative crystallinity (17.62 %) and single helix content (25.78 %). Furthermore, the HBS-C18 FA complexes were formed by EA (C18 FA with monounsaturated bonds) that had the highest R1047/1022 (1.0509) and lowest full width at half-maximum (FWHM, 20.85), suggesting good short-range ordered structure. Moreover, all C18 FAs could form two kinds of V-type complexes with HBS, which can be confirmed by the results of CLSM and DSC measurements, and all of them showed significantly lower digestibility. HBS-EA possessed the highest resistant starch content (20.17 %), while HBS-SA had the highest slowly digestible starch content (26.61 %). In addition, the inhibition of HBS retrogradation by fatty acid addition was further proven, where HBS-SA gel firmness (37.80 g) and aging enthalpy value were the lowest, indicating the most effective. Overall, compounding with fatty acids, especially SA, could be used as a novel way to make functional foods based on HBS.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a severe form of systemic inflammatory response syndrome that is caused by infection. Sepsis is characterized by a marked state of stress, which manifests as nonspecific physiological and metabolic changes in response to the disease. Previous studies have indicated that the stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) can serve as a reliable predictor of adverse outcomes in various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. However, there is limited research on the relationship between the SHR and adverse outcomes in patients with infectious diseases, particularly in critically ill patients with sepsis. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the association between the SHR and adverse outcomes in critically ill patients with sepsis. METHODS: Clinical data from 2312 critically ill patients with sepsis were extracted from the MIMIC-IV (2.2) database. Based on the quartiles of the SHR, the study population was divided into four groups. The primary outcome was 28-day all-cause mortality, and the secondary outcome was in-hospital mortality. The relationship between the SHR and adverse outcomes was explored using restricted cubic splines, Cox proportional hazard regression, and Kaplan‒Meier curves. The predictive ability of the SHR was assessed using the Boruta algorithm, and a prediction model was established using machine learning algorithms. RESULTS: Data from 2312 patients who were diagnosed with sepsis were analyzed. Restricted cubic splines demonstrated a "U-shaped" association between the SHR and survival rate, indicating that an increase in the SHR is related to an increased risk of adverse events. A higher SHR was significantly associated with an increased risk of 28-day mortality and in-hospital mortality in patients with sepsis (HR > 1, P < 0.05) compared to a lower SHR. Boruta feature selection showed that SHR had a higher Z score, and the model built using the rsf algorithm showed the best performance (AUC = 0.8322). CONCLUSION: The SHR exhibited a U-shaped relationship with 28-day all-cause mortality and in-hospital mortality in critically ill patients with sepsis. A high SHR is significantly correlated with an increased risk of adverse events, thus indicating that is a potential predictor of adverse outcomes in patients with sepsis.

PURPOSE: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography (CT) for gastroesophageal varices (GEVs) and identify high-risk GEVs in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS: A comprehensive search of databases identified 28 studies reporting on CT-based diagnosis for GEVs confirmed via endoscopy. Meta-analyses were conducted to calculate the pooled sensitivity (SEN) and pooled specificity (SPE), positive likelihood ratio (PLR) and negative likelihood ratio (NLR), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and the area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS: Based on the number of patients (or varices), the pooled SEN, SPE, PLR, NLR, DOR, and AUC of CT-based diagnosis were estimated at 0.91 (0.92), 0.81 (0.45), 4.82 (1.67), 0.11 (0.17), 42.47 (10.26), and 0.93 (0.94), respectively, for any GEV and at 0.89 (0.89), 0.90 (0.79), 8.86 (4.28), 0.12 (0.14), 75.71 (30.19), and 0.95 (0.85), respectively, for high-risk GEVs. Subgroup analyses indicated that CT had a higher diagnostic accuracy for esophageal varices compared with gastric varices (AUC: 0.93 vs. 0.89, P < 0.05), and the 64-slice CT yielded superior SEN compared with 16-slice and <16-slice CT (AUC: 0.97 vs. 0.92 and 0.82, respectively, P < 0.05). Prospective studies demonstrated higher diagnostic accuracy than retrospective studies (AUC: 0.95 vs. 0.90, P < 0.05). Regarding variceal size, a cut-off of 3 mm and 5 mm discriminated between low- and high-risk individuals, respectively, with high diagnostic accuracy (AUC: 0.992 vs. 0.997, P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: CT demonstrates promising diagnostic accuracy for identifying GEVs and distinguishing high-risk GEVs in patients with cirrhosis. Further research validating optimal variceal size cut-offs is warranted to enhance clinical utility. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Such a high diagnostic accuracy of CT scans for predicting varices is clinically meaningful for patients with cirrhosis accompanied by portal hypertension. If high-risk varices are identified at CT scans, early intervention would be helpful to reduce the risk of variceal bleeding.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of momentary intervention on the willingness and actual uptake of influenza vaccination among the elderly in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study assessed the willingness of the elderly to receive influenza vaccination, and an momentary intervention aimed to increase vaccination willingness among those initially unwilling. The elderly reporting a willingness were offered free influenza vaccination through a community intervention program. RESULTS: A total of 3138 participants were recruited in this study, and 61.3 % (95 % CI 59.6 %-63.0 %) were willing to receive influenza vaccination at baseline. The willingness rate of influenza vaccination increased to 79.8 % (95 % CI 78.4 %-81.2 %), with an increase of 18.5 % (95 % CI 16.3 %-20.7 %) after momentary intervention. The influenza vaccination rate was 40.4 % (95 % CI 38.5 %-42.3 %) before and 53.9 % (95 % CI 52.0 %-55.8 %) after momentary intervention with an increase of 13.5 % (95 % CI 10.9 %-16.2 %). There was no significant difference in influenza vaccination rates between the initially willing people and those who changed to be willing to receive influenza vaccination after momentary intervention (vaccination rates: 78.0 % vs. 81.3 %). CONCLUSION: Momentary intervention has been shown to effectively enhance the willingness of the elderly to receive influenza vaccination, thereby facilitating the translation of this intention into actual behavior.

Objective: This prospective study aims to evaluate acute irradiation-induced xerostomia during radiotherapy by utilizing the normalized iodine concentration (NIC) derived from energy spectrum computed tomography (CT) iodine maps. Methods: In this prospective study, we evaluated 28 patients diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. At 4 distinct stages of radiotherapy (0, 10, 20, and 30 fractions), each patient underwent CT scans to generate iodine maps. The NIC of both the left and right parotid glands was obtained, with the NIC at the 0-fraction stage serving as the baseline measurement. After statistically comparing the NIC obtained in the arterial phase, early venous phase, late venous phase, and delayed phase, we chose the late venous iodine concentration as the NIC and proceeded to analyze the variations in NIC at each radiotherapy interval. Using the series of NIC values, we conducted hypothesis tests to evaluate the extent of change in NIC within the parotid gland across different stages. Furthermore, we identified the specific time point at which the NIC decay exhibited the most statistically significant results. In addition, we evaluated the xerostomia grades of the patients at these 4 stages, following the radiation therapy oncology group (RTOG) xerostomia evaluation standard, to draw comparisons with the changes observed in NIC. Results: The NIC in the late venous phase exhibited the highest level of statistical significance (P < .001). There was a noticeable attenuation in NIC as the RTOG dry mouth grade increased. Particularly, at the 20 fraction, the NIC experienced the most substantial attenuation (P < .001), a significant negative correlation was observed between the NIC of the left, right, and both parotid glands, and the RTOG evaluation grade of acute irradiation-induced xerostomia (P < .001, r = -0.46; P < .001, r = -0.45; P < .001, r = -0.47). The critical NIC values for the left, right, and both parotid glands when acute xerostomia occurred were 0.175, 0.185, and 0.345 mg/ml, respectively, with AUC = 0.73, AUC = 0.75, and AUC = 0.75. Conclusion: The NIC may be used to evaluate changes in parotid gland function during radiotherapy and acute irradiation-induced xerostomia.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a prevalent cancer with a poor survival rate due to anatomical limitations of the head and a lack of reliable biomarkers. Cuproptosis represents a novel cellular regulated death pathway, and N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most common internal RNA modification in mRNA. They are intricately connected to tumor formation, progression, and prognosis. This study aimed to construct a risk model for HNSCC using a set of mRNAs associated with m6A regulators and cuproptosis genes (mcrmRNA). METHODS: RNA-seq and clinical data of HNSCC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database were analyzed to develop a risk model through the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) analysis. Survival analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis were performed for the high- and low-risk groups. Additionally, the model was validated using the GSE41613 dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. GSEA and CIBERSORT were applied to investigate the immune microenvironment of HNSCC. RESULTS: A risk model consisting of 32 mcrmRNA was developed using the LASSO analysis. The risk score of patients was confirmed to be an independent prognostic indicator by multivariate Cox analysis. The high-risk group exhibited a higher tumor mutation burden. Additionally, CIBERSORT analysis indicated varying levels of immune cell infiltration between the two groups. Significant disparities in drug sensitivity to common medications were also observed. Enrichment analysis further unveiled significant differences in metabolic pathways and RNA processing between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our risk model can predict outcomes for HNSCC patients and offers valuable insights for personalized therapeutic approaches.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a crucial role in determining photocatalytic reaction pathways, intermediate species, and product selectivity. However, research on ROS regulation in polymer photocatalysts is still in its early stages. Herein, we successfully achieved series of modulations to the skeleton of Pyrene-alkyne-based (Tetraethynylpyrene (TEPY)) conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) by altering the linkers (1,4-dibromobenzene (BE), 4,4'-dibromobiphenyl (IP), and 3,3'-dibromobiphenyl (BP)). Experiments combined with theoretical calculations indicate that BE-TEPY exhibits a planar structure with minimal exciton binding energy, which favors exciton dissociation followed by charge transfer with adsorbed O2 to produce •O2-. Thus BE-TEPY shows optimal photocatalytic activity for phenylboronic acid oxidation and [3+2] cycloaddition. Conversely, the skeleton of BP-TEPY is significantly distorted. Its planar conjugation decreases, intersystem crossing (ISC) efficiency increases, which makes it more prone for resonance energy transfer to generate 1O2. Therefore, BP-TEPY displays best photocatalytic activity in [4+2] cycloaddition and thioanisole oxidation. Both above reactant conversion and its product selectivity exceed 99%. This work systematically reveals the intrinsic structure-activity relationship among the skeleton structure of CPPs, excitonic behavior, and selective generation of ROS, providing new insights for the rational design of highly efficient and selective CPPs photocatalysts.

Severe pneumonia caused by respiratory viruses has become a major threat to humans, especially with the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak and epidemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the universal molecular mechanism of severe pneumonia induced by multiple respiratory viruses and to search for therapeutic strategies targeting this universal molecular mechanism. The common differential genes of four respiratory viruses, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2, were screened by GEO database, and the hub gene was obtained by Sytohubba in Cytoscape. Then, the effect of hub genes on inflammasome and pyrodeath was investigated in the model of RSV infection in vitro and in vivo. Finally, through virtual screening, drugs targeting the hub gene were obtained, which could alleviate severe viral pneumonia in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that CMPK2 is one of the hub genes after infection by four respiratory viruses. CMPK2 activates the inflammasome by activating NLRP3, and promotes the releases of inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-1ß and IL-18 to induce severe viral pneumonia. Z25 and Z08 can reduce the expression level of CMPK2 mRNA and protein, thereby inhibiting NLRP3 and alleviating the development of severe viral pneumonia. In conclusion, the inflammatory response mediated by CMPK2 is the common molecular mechanism of severe pneumonia induced by viral infection, and Z25 and Z08 can effectively alleviate viral infection and severe pneumonia through this mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Giant ovarian cysts (GOCs)complicated with progressive bulbar paralysis (PBP) are very rare, and no such literature about these cases have been reported. Through the diagnosis and treatment of this case, the perioperative related treatment of such patients was analyzed in detail, and early-stage ovarian mucinous carcinoma was unexpectedly found during the treatment, which provided reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment of this kind of diseases. CASE PRESENTATION: In this article, we reported a 38-year-old female patient. The patient was diagnosed with PBP 2 years ago. Examination revealed a large fluid-dominated cystic solid mass in the pelvis measuring approximately 28.6×14.2×8.0 cm. Carbohydrate antigen19-9(CA19-9) 29.20 IU/mL and no other significant abnormalities were observed. The patient eventually underwent transabdominal right adnexal resection under regional anesthesia, epidural block. Postoperative pathology showed mucinous carcinoma in some areas of the right ovary. The patient was staged as stage IA, and surveillance was chosen. With postoperative follow-up 1 month later, her CA19-9 decreased to 14.50 IU/ml. CONCLUSIONS: GOCs combined with PBP patients require a multi-disciplinary treatment. Preoperative evaluation of the patient's PBP progression, selection of the surgical approach in relation to the patient's fertility requirements, the nature of the ovarian cyst and systemic condition are required. Early mucinous ovarian cancer accidentally discovered after operation and needs individualized treatment according to the guidelines and the patient's situation. The patient's dysphagia and respiratory function should be closely monitored during the perioperative period. In addition, moral support from the family is also very important.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Combinations of immune checkpoint inhibitors and nab-paclitaxel have achieved significant therapeutic effects in the treatment of advanced urothelial carcinoma. Our aim was to assess the efficacy and safety of tislelizumab combined with low-dose nab-paclitaxel in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). METHODS: TRUCE-01 was a single-arm phase 2 study that included 62 patients with T2-4a N0/X M0 MIBC tumors with predominant urothelial carcinoma histology. Eligible patients received three 21-d cycles of intravenous 200 mg tislelizumab on day 1 plus intravenous 200 mg nab-paclitaxel on day 2, followed by surgical assessment. The primary study endpoint was a clinical complete response (cCR). Treatment-related adverse event (TRAE) profiles were recorded according to Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 5.0. KEY FINDINGS AND LIMITATIONS: The safety analysis included all 62 patients and the efficacy analysis included 48 patients. The primary efficacy endpoint (cCR) was met by 25 patients (52%) patients. Among the 62 patients in the safety analysis, six (9.7%) had grade ≥3 TRAEs. CONCLUSIONS: Tislelizumab combined with low-dose nab-paclitaxel showed promising antitumor effectiveness and was generally well tolerated, which makes it an excellent preoperative therapy option for MIBC. PATIENT SUMMARY: We found that a combination of the drugs tislelizumab and low-dose nab-paclitaxel had satisfactory efficacy and safety for preoperative treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

The conventional aeration method is compulsorily continuous ventilation or aeration at equal intervals, and a uniform aeration rate does not vary during composting. A dynamic on-demand aeration approach based on the diverse oxygen consumption of microorganisms at different composting stages could solve the problems of insufficient oxygen supply or excessive aeration. This study aims to design an aerobic composting system with dynamic aeration, investigate the effects of dynamic aeration on the temperature rise and physicochemical characteristics during the aerobic composting of corn straw and pig manure, and optimise the control parameters of oxygen concentration. Higher temperatures and longer high-temperature durations were achieved under dynamic aeration, thereby accelerating the decomposition of organic compounds. Dynamic aeration effectively reduced the aeration frequency, the convective latent heat and moisture losses, and the power consumption in the middle and later stages of composting. The dynamic aeration regulated according to the oxygen concentration of 14%-17% in the exhaust was optimum. Under the optimal conditions, the period above 50 ℃ lasted 8.5 days, and the highest temperature, organic matter removal, and seed germination index reached 65.82 ℃, 37.59%, and 74.59%, respectively. The power consumption was decreased by 33.58% compared to the traditional intermittent aeration. Dynamic aeration would be a competitive approach for improving aerobic composting characteristics and reducing the power consumption and the hot exhaust gas emissions, especially in the cooling maturation stage, which was of great significance for realising the low-cost production of composting at scale and promoting the blossom of the organic fertiliser industry.
