ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Previous studies supported a link between the ABO blood type and survival for several types of malignancies. Nonetheless, the relationship between ABO blood type and survival in colon cancer patients has not been rigorously evaluated. The goal of this retrospective analysis was to discern the correlations between ABO blood group and colon cancer survival. METHODS: A total of 1555 colon cancer patients that underwent curative-intent surgery between October 1995 and June 2002 were eligible for this study. The primary outcomes measured were the association between ABO blood group and patient survival. RESULTS: Compared with patients with non-AB blood types (blood types A, B, and O), patients with blood type AB were more likely to have better survival. The mean overall survival (OS) of the blood type AB patients was 113.9 months, whereas the mean OS of the non-AB blood type patients was significantly lower, 106.1 months (P<0.001, log-rank test). Compared with patients with blood type AB, the hazard ratios for patients with A, B, and O were 4.37 (95% confidence interval (95% CI), 2.65-7.20), 2.99 (95% CI, 1.81-4.96), and 2.78 (95% CI, 1.69-4.56), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Blood type AB is a favourable prognostic factor for patients with colon cancer.

ABSTRACT

Preoperative elevations in the levels of serum amyloid A (SAA) or C-reactive protein (CRP) have been reported to be prognostic indicators in several malignancies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the serum levels of SAA and CRP in the prognosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In total, 252 patients with ESCC who had undergone surgery with curative-intent were retrospectively recruited. The specificity, sensitivity, and prognostic value of SAA or CRP levels were measured as the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). The clinical value of SAA and CRP levels as prognostic indicators was evaluated using Cox's proportional hazards model. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates for the entire cohort of patients with ESCC were 71.0%, 61.0%, and 43.0%, respectively. The correlation between the levels of SAA and CRP was significant (r(2) = 0. 685, P < 0.001). The ROC analysis showed that the levels of CRP were associated with a significantly lower overall accuracy than were the SAA levels (AUC, 0.615 vs. 0.880; P < 0.001). For the complete cohort, the median OS was 52.0 months longer in patients with low preoperative serum levels of SAA (72.0 months) compared with patients who had high SAA levels (20.0 months, P < 0.001). The median OS among patients with low CRP levels was also longer compared with the patients who had high CRP levels (72.0 vs. 51.0 months, respectively; P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses showed that the preoperative elevated levels of SAA could find significant differences in OS for stage I, stage II, and stage III (P < 0.001, P = 0.001, and P < 0.001, respectively), whereas the increased levels of CRP could only find a difference in OS for stage II cancers. After a multivariate analysis, preoperative elevated level of SAA was found to be an independently and significant prognostic factor (P < 0.001). Our study indicates that the preoperative levels of SAA and CRP can act as prognostic factors, and that elevated levels of these proteins are associated with negative effects on the survival of patients with ESCC. SAA showed a higher prognostic value than CRP in both cohort and subgroup analysis.

ABSTRACT

In this study, twelve 2,4-dihydroxychalcone derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for antidepressant activities using the forced swimming test (FST). The pharmacological test showed that 6 compounds significantly reduced the immobility times in the FST at a dose of 10 mg/kg, indicative of antidepressant activity. Among the derivatives, compounds designated 3d and 3 h exhibited the best antidepressant activity, with reduced immobility time by 32.05% and 34.33%, respectively. In the 5-hydroxytryptophan-induced head-twitch test and yohimbine-induced mortality test, compounds 3d and 3 h increased head-twitch and increased the mortality rate. The mechanisms of the antidepressant effects of compounds 3d and 3 h may be related with the 5-HTP and NE nervous system.

ABSTRACT

The function of ANP in the cardiovascular regulation is very similar with the TCM theory of "the Heart governs blood circulation". Using the method of cardiac impedance to check cardiac output and the method of radioimmunoassay (RIA) to check plasma ANP, the result showed that in the status of Blood Deficiency Syndrome, cardiac function was impaired, there were reduced kinemia and stroke volume, as well as markedly raised plasma ANP and peripheral resistance. The above-mentioned indexes were significantly different from those of normal group (P < 0.01). Using multivariate regression analysis, cardiac output was negatively correlated with the plasma ANP (P < 0.05). 23 cases with Blood Deficiency Syndrome showed normal hemoglobin, but an evidently changed cardiac output and plasma ANP were closely related with the level of the Blood Deficiency. Both parameters might serve as the objective basis to reflect the level of Blood Deficiency to facilitate the clinical diagnosis of the patient.

ABSTRACT

In China, which has a commitment to family planning and, in particular, to the one-child family, a postpartum IUD should be widely accepted and could have significant impact on the Chinese family planning program. This report presents the introduction of the Delta T and Delta Loop devices, with 200 immediate postpartum insertions. Fifty-two deliveries were by cesarean section. The 6-month expulsion rates were 13.3 and 17.2 for the Delta T and Delta Loop, respectively. There was one pregnancy reported. Analysis suggests that the two devices are suitable for use in the postpartum period for Chinese women.

PIP: Since 1956, China has had an official policy favoring birth control, and in 1962, it became "a national policy of highest priority". The government began encouraging 3 reproductive norms: later marriage, with the legal age for marriage now being 22 for males and 20 for females; longer spacing between births, with at least 4-year interval recommended between births; and fewer children, meaning 2 children per family in 1977. Since then, a new family planning campaign has been introduced that calls for elimination of all 3rd and higher order births by 1982 in some areas and for encouraging the 1-child family as much as possible. Available contraceptives that can be provided by paramedics, which are highly effective, and which can be used in the immediate postpartum period while the woman is still under the care of birth attendants are recommended. The postpartum Loop and postpartum T intrauterine devices with biodegradable chromic sutures have been developed and named the Delta Loop and the Delta T. They are both modifications that involve the addition of chromic suture extensions to standard Lippes Loop D and Copper T 220C devices, respectively. From December 1980 through March 1981, 108 Delta T and 92 Delta Loop devices were inserted in women within 10 minutes following delivery of the placenta. 52 deliveries were by cesarean section. The 6 month expulsion rates were 13.3 and 17.2 for the Delta T and Delta Loop, respectively. There was 1 pregnancy reported. In a society such as the People's Republic of China where strong emphasis is placed on family planning and, specifically, on the 1-child family, the availability of a safe and highly effective contraceptive during the puerperium is ideal. Since the IUD itself has been proven effective and acceptable in China, a postpartum device could add another dimension to family planning, especially for couples not ready for permanent contraception.
