ABSTRACT

Potential health risks related to environmental endocrine disruptors (EEDs) have aroused research hotspots at the forefront of water treatment technologies. Herein, nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide/schwertmannite nanocomposites (N-TiO2/SCH) have been successfully developed as heterogeneous catalysts for the degradation of typical EEDs via photo-Fenton processes. Due to the sustainable Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion induced by photoelectrons, as-prepared N-TiO2/SCH nanocomposites exhibit much enhanced efficiency for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA; ca. 100% within 60 min under visible irradiation) in a wide pH range of 3.0-7.8, which is significantly higher than that of the pristine schwertmannite (ca. 74.5%) or N-TiO2 (ca. 10.8%). In this photo-Fenton system, the efficient degradation of BPA is mainly attributed to the oxidation by hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2). Moreover, the possible catalytic mechanisms and reaction pathway of BPA degradation are systematically investigated based on analytical and photoelectrochemical analyses. This work not only provides a feasible means for the development of novel heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts, but also lays a theoretical foundation for the potential application of mineral-based materials in wastewater treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of urantide in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis (AS)-related liver and kidney injury by antagonizing the urotensin II/urotensin receptor (UII/UT) system and regulating the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. METHODS: Atherosclerotic ApoE-/- mice were treated with 20 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg, and 40 mg/kg urantide for 14 days. RESULTS: When ApoE-/- mice developed AS, significant pathological changes occurred in the liver and kidney, and the UII/UT system in tissue was highly activated; furthermore, the Wnt/ß-catenin signalling pathway was activated, and proteins related to this signalling pathway, such as GSK-3ß, AXIN2, CK1, and APC, were significantly downregulated. After urantide treatment, the pathological damage to the liver and kidney was effectively improved, the activity of the UII/UT system was effectively inhibited, and the expression of the Wnt/ß-catenin signalling pathway and related proteins was restored. Wnt/ß-catenin signals were mainly localized in the cytoplasm, renal tubules, and interstitium. CONCLUSION: Urantide could improve AS-related liver and kidney injury by antagonizing the UII/UT system, and the improvements in liver and kidney function in atherosclerotic ApoE-/- mice may be related to inhibition of the Wnt/ß-catenin signalling pathway.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop liquid crystal (LC) precursors to obtain novel long-acting analgesics for injection based on depot systems and compare the difference between the cubic and hexagonal precursors in delivering Diclofenac sodium (DS). METHODS: Diclofenac sodium liquid crystal precursor injections were prepared and characterized, followed by in vitro release, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacokinetic studies. RESULTS: The optimal formulations were prepared with a ratio of Phytantriol/ethanol/water as 76:19:5 for cubic LC precursors, and a ratio of Phytantriol/ethanol/water/Vitamine-E acetate as 72:18:5:5 for hexagonal, both loading various drug dosages (2.5%, 3.75% and 5%), respectively. Polarized light microscopy and small angle diffraction confirmed that the precursors were isotropic fluids and transformed into gels with Pn3m or HII framework in water. Rheological studies have shown that precursors belong to Newtonian fluids and gels to pseudoplastic fluids. The release showed that the DS in the commercial injection (DS-inj) was completely liberated within 6 h, whereas only 46.55% and 49.73% of the DS in 2.5% cubic precursors and 2.5% hexagonal precursors were freed, respectively. Pharmacodynamic studies have shown that cubic, hexagonal and DS-inj raised the pain threshold in mice by 169.4%, 157.3% and 113.79%, respectively. The mean retention times of DS in cubic and hexagonal were 3.16 and 2.67 times longer than DS-inj, respectively, according to pharmacokinetic results. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, cubic and hexagonal are both promising analgesic sustained release formulations. In addition, based only on the current comparison, cubic seems to have a better long-acting effect.

ABSTRACT

Solar-driven CO2 conversion to multicarbon (C2+) products has emerged as a key challenge, yet this calls for a systematic investigation on the overall reaction process and mechanism at an atomic level based on the rational design of highly selective photocatalysts. Herein, we report the synthesis of compact Bi2S3/CdS heterostructures via facile cation exchange, by which a unique pathway of CO2-to-C2H4 photoconversion is achieved. Specifically, the BCS-30 shows an optimal C2H4 production rate of 3.49 µmol h-1 g-1 based on the regulation of band structures and energy levels of photocatalysts by controlled growth of Bi2S3 at CdS surface. Both experimental and theoretical results (DFT calculations) identify Bi atoms as new catalytic sites for the adsorption of CO* and formation of *CO-*CO dimers that further hydrogenate to produce ethylene. Overall, this work demonstrates vast potentials of delicately designed heterostructures for CO2 conversion towards C2+ products under mild photocatalytic conditions.

ABSTRACT

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a particularly aggressive subtype known for its extremely high drug resistance, progression, poor prognosis, and lack of clear therapeutic targets. Researchers are aiming to advance TNBC treatment worldwide. In the past 2-3 years, more positive results have emerged in the clinical research on TNBC treatment. Based on the results, several impressive drugs have been approved to benefit patients with TNBC, including the PARP inhibitors olaparib and talazoparib for germline BRCA mutation-associated breast cancer (gBRCAm-BC) and immunotherapy using the checkpoint inhibitor atezolizumab in combination with nab-paclitaxel for programmed cell death-ligand 1-positive (PD-L1+) advanced TNBC. Although neoadjuvant therapy has focused on combinations of systemic agents to optimize pathologically complete response, metastatic TNBC still has a poor prognosis. Innovative multidrug combination systemic therapies based on neoadjuvants and adjuvants have led to significant improvements in outcomes, particularly over the past decade.

ABSTRACT

The present paper introduces the clinical practice of professor Lü Da-gu on treatment of hyper lipemia, fatty liver, obesity, metabolic syndrome and other chronic metabolic diseases by using "the method of coordinating spleen and stomach". This needling method has a strong effectiveness of regulating and improving the function of the spleen and stomach. The acupuncture prescription is composed of 20 acupoints, 16 of which are belonging to the meridian of spleen and stomach. In accordance with the theory of yin and yang of TCM, professor Lü selects the certain points based on the rule of "the left side belongs to yang, the right side belongs to yin". And he strictly keeps the sequencing based on the rule of "ascending of yin, descending of yang" during acupuncturing these acupoints. At the same time he stresses the depth and manipulations of acupuncture. When treating the diseases mentioned above, he also asks the patients to keep the total amount of intake diet with conscious control and points
