ABSTRACT

Preparation of stable water-in-oil (W/O) high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) containing methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer as oil phase is a difficult task due to the significant solubility of MMA in water. Here, for the first time a fluorinated di-block copolymer (FDBC) poly (2-dimethylamino)ethylmethacrylate-b-poly (trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA-b-PTFEMA) is proposed to stabilize HIPEs of MMA without the use of any co-stabilizer or thickening agent. Fluorinated segments in FDBC anchored well at oil/water interface of HIPE, offering high hydrophobicity to the partially hydrophilic MMA monomer and in turn stabilization to MMA-HIPE. By using fluorinated di-block copolymer as stabilizer, highly stable HIPEs can be obtained. In addition, highly interconnected porous monoliths were obtained after free radical polymerization, which are highly desirable materials in various practical applications including tissue engineering scaffolds, separation science, bio-engineering and so on. The as-prepared MMA-HIPEs possess high thermal stability without phase separation. The textural characteristics of as-prepared composites, such as pore size and distribution, can be easily controlled by simply varying the amount of FDBC and/or dispersed phase fraction. Moreover, the influence of di-block concentration on water uptake (WU) capability of the prepared porous monoliths is explored.

ABSTRACT

Objective image retargeting quality assessment aims to use computational models to predict the retargeted image quality consistent with subjective perception. In this paper, we propose a multiple-level feature (MLF)-based quality measure to predict the perceptual quality of retargeted images. We first provide an in-depth analysis on the low-level aspect ratio similarity feature, and then propose a mid-level edge group similarity feature, to better address the shape/structure related distortion. Furthermore, a high-level face block similarity feature is designed to deal with sensitive region deformation. The multiple-level features are complementary as they quantify different aspects of quality degradation in the retargeted image, and the MLF measure learned by regression is used to predict the perceptual quality of retargeted images. Extensive experimental results performed on two public benchmark databases demonstrate that the proposed MLF measure achieves higher quality prediction accuracy than the existing relevant state-of-the-art quality measures.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the effect of cartilage tissue engineering scaffold PVA/ι-CA on the biological behavior of the ATDC-5 cells, and to evaluate its feasibility on constructing tissue engineering cartilage. Methods:The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)and carrageenan were used to make the composite scaffold material PVA/ι-CA according to a certain proportion by physical blending technology and repeated freezing thawing method, and the porosity and pore size of PVA/ι-CA were detected. The ATDC-5 cells were seeded into the composite scaffold and its growth was observed; the expressions of collagen type Ⅱ in the ATDC-5 cells were tested by immunohistochemical staining and immunofluorescence staining; the morphology of the ATDC-5 cells was confirmed by Toluidine blue staining. The growth and secretion of extracellular matrix of the ATDC-5 cells were observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM);the proliferative rates of ATDC-5 cells in composite scaffold materials in negative control group (added with DMEM culture media)and experimental group (added with DMEM contain scaffold)were determined by MTT assay. The composite scaffolds were implanted subcutaneously in the SD rats. The histocompatibility and vascularization in vivo of the composite scaffolds were evaluated. Results:The average porosity of cartilage tissue engineering scaffold PVA/ι-CA was (86.88±3.88)%,and the average pore size was 20-40 μm.The HE staining results showed that the ATDC-5 cells grew well with the polygon and plumpness morphology. All the samples were stained positive for collagen type Ⅱ by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining, which verified the normal phenotype of chondrocytes on the scaffolds. All the sample were stained positive for toluidine blue staining, which verified ECM deposition of the ATDC-5 cells on the scaffolds. The number of the positive cells was significantly increased with the prolongation of time. After cultured for 7 d,few of the ATDC-5 cells presented polygonal;after cultured for 14 d,the ATDC-5 cells distributed more densely, and contacted with each other on the scaffold;after cultured for 21 - 28 d,the ATDC-5 cells filled the interconnected pores of the scaffolds, synthesizing a significant amount of neo-formed ECM.The proliferation of ATDC-5 cells in PVA/ι-CA grew fast during 7-14 d,and it became slow during 21-28 d;the difference was not statistically significant compared with control group (P >0.05).The subcutaneous implantation results showed the inflammatory reactions were slight at the early stage and eviated gradually, there was an increasing angiogenesis at the late stage, and the degradation and absorption of the meterial were slight.Conclusion:PVA/ι-CA composite material will be an ideal material for the cartilage tissue engineering.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel with similar porous structure and mechanical properties to the natural cartilage is very suitable for the repair of articular cartilage. However, the pure PVA hydrogel after lyophilization wil be accompanied by the shrinkage of the polymer network and the col apse of the pores, leading to the inhomogeneous performance of the material even in the state of re-swel ing. Addition of the active polymer wil increase the cel adhesion ability of PVA hydrogel. OBJECTIVE:To construct PVA/lota-carrageenan (l-CA) composite materials with different mass fractions of l-CA and evaluate the biocompatibility with vascular endothelial cel s. METHODS:PVA/l-CA composite films with different contents of l-CA were fabricated and then co-cultured with vascular endothelial cel s. Attachment, proliferation and morphological changes of vascular endothelial cel s on the composite were observed by scanning electron microscope and MTT assay to evaluate its biocompatibility. PVA/l-CA three-dimensional scaffold with different contents of l-CA were constructed, and hemolysis experiment was conducted according to the biological evaluation standards of medical devices, and the porosity and pore size were observed using scanning electron microscope. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:In vitro experimental results showed that the addition of l-CA could significantly increase the biological activity of PVA hydrogel, and promote the cel attachment and proliferation on the scaffold. The hemolysis rate of each experimental group was less than 5%(the accepted safety standard), suggesting that the composite materials were in accordance with the standard of medical devices for hemolysis experiment. These findings indicate that the composite scaffolds with 20%-30%l-CA possess the pore size suitable for cel growth and proliferation and the porosity beneficial for transportation of nutrients and metabolites, which can serve as an excel ent scaffold for tissue engineering.

ABSTRACT

During the past few years, there have been various kinds of content-aware image retargeting operators proposed for image resizing. However, the lack of effective objective retargeting quality assessment metrics limits the further development of image retargeting techniques. Different from traditional image quality assessment (IQA) metrics, the quality degradation during image retargeting is caused by artificial retargeting modifications, and the difficulty for image retargeting quality assessment (IRQA) lies in the alternation of the image resolution and content, which makes it impossible to directly evaluate the quality degradation like traditional IQA. In this paper, we interpret the image retargeting in a unified framework of resampling grid generation and forward resampling. We show that the geometric change estimation is an efficient way to clarify the relationship between the images. We formulate the geometric change estimation as a backward registration problem with Markov random field and provide an effective solution. The geometric change aims to provide the evidence about how the original image is resized into the target image. Under the guidance of the geometric change, we develop a novel aspect ratio similarity (ARS) metric to evaluate the visual quality of retargeted images by exploiting the local block changes with a visual importance pooling strategy. Experimental results on the publicly available MIT RetargetMe and CUHK data sets demonstrate that the proposed ARS can predict more accurate visual quality of retargeted images compared with the state-of-the-art IRQA metrics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:Currently, the cement delivery device used in vertebral augmentation vertebral augmentation (vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty) has flat tips that cannot be bent. During surgery, we always choose injection cement by symmetric way to keep the balance of power on the biomechanics of the vertebral body, while the traditional cement delivery tube can only be used in ipsilateral vertebral body. OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the feasibility of curved vertebroplasty device for the treatment of thoracolumbar osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. METHODS: Sixty patients (72 vertebral bodies) with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures were enroled, including 8 cases of double-level vertebral fractures and 2 cases of three-level vertebral fractures. Al operations applied curved delivery device in percutaneous vertebroplasty. We recorded operation time, intraoperative blood loss, and X-ray imaging data through prospective self control study. Treatment effect was evaluated with modified Oswestry disability index, Visual Analogue Scale scores and the World Health Organization Quality of Life assessment. The patients were folowed up for 6 months to 2 years. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) Surgery was performed successfuly on al 60 patients. The average operation time was 27 minutes (20-45 minutes) for 50 cases by unilateral transpedicular approach. (2) The mean amount of bone cement in every single vertebral of al 72 vertebrae was averagely 6.4 mL (4.2-9.5 mL). Bone cement distribution had not been found to be biased one-sided without severe leakage. (3) Visual Analogue Scale score and Oswestry disability index were significantly improved at 1 day after treatment (P 0.05). (4) The ratio of good quality of life in 1 month than postoperatively (87%) and in the last folow-up (92%) was significantly greater compared with the preoperative ratio (27%) (P < 0.05). (5) These findings confirmed that curved vertebroplasty device in unilateral pedicle puncture could ensure bilateral symmetric distribution of bone cement. Al patients are satisfied with treatment. It is proved to be a feasible simple and safe method.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:Some studies have showed that the accuracy and surgery outcome of the percutaneous pedicle screw implantation was superior to open surgery, but the relationship between the angle of pedicle screws and screw stability is stil unclear in previous studies. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of different angles of implanted screws on the stability of pedicle screw. METHODS:A total of 30 vertebral specimens of adult pigs were selected and screws were implanted respectively according to different coronal and sagittal angles. The maximum pul-out strength of screws from each specimen was tested by machine. Load-displacement curves were drew and statistical y analyzed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The maximum pul-out strength and maximum energy of screw with 10° and 15° coronal and sagittal angles implantation were significantly better than those of 0° angle group (P<0.05). When the stress exceeded the maximum pul-out strength, the pul-out strength of screw decreased gradual y. The curves in coronal and sagittal 10° and 15° angle groups was similar, and the slope was better than 0° angle group (P<0.05). These results confirm that the angle of the implanted screw provides effective assistance to the stability of percutaneous pedicle screw. After the looseness of the screws, the pul out strength shows a steady downward trend.
