ABSTRACT

The treatment of the sequelae of severe foot injuries caused by motorcycle spoke injury, especially in pediatric patients, allows for new options and surgical protocols. The tarsometatarsal joint and the first metatarsal were reconstructed by precise preoperative design using the TSF space external fixation technique in one stage to correct the foot deformity and restore the volume and length, and free grafting of the fibular head with epiphysis in the second stage. This method is the first of its kind reported. The patient's foot deformity was corrected, walking, walking up and down stairs, and running functions were achieved, and the bone quality could grow with age. The combination of TSF six-axis spatial external fixation technique and microscopic technique can maximize the patient's appearance and function and is worth promoting.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the effect of phenylethanol glycoside from Cistanche tubulosa (CPhGs) on the prevention of bovine serum albumin (BSA)-induced hepatic fibrosis in rats. Investigation of the mechanisms of the anti-hepatic fibrosis effect was focused on CPhGs' influence on the "gut-liver" regulation, including the gut microbiota, intestinal barrier, systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) concentration, and LPS-related signaling pathway. The results show that CPhGs restored the diversity of gut microbiota, increased the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes, and decreased the relative abundance of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria in the fibrotic rats. In addition, CPhGs promoted the enrichment of probiotics such as Blautia, Oscillospira, Ruminococcus, Odoribacter, Bacteroides, and Parabacteroides in intestines of these rats. Furthermore, CPhGs reduced histopathological injury in the intestine and restored the tight junctions of the intestine by increasing the expression of ZO-1, occludin, and E-cadherin. CPhGs efficiently reduced serum LPS and liver lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) levels and inhibited the LPS-TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway, which is related to protein expression in the liver. Correlation analysis confirmed that these beneficial bacteria were negatively associated with pathological damage, while LPS and harmful bacteria were positively associated with liver injury. Our fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment confirmed that gut microbiota is an important part of disease progression and that CPhGs is useful for the prevention and treatment of hepatic fibrosis. Our data demonstrate that the anti-hepatic fibrosis mechanism of CPhGs was mediated by regulation of the "gut-liver" axis. These results can stimulate consideration for its use in clinical practices.

ABSTRACT

Microvascular angina (MVA) is the most common cause of cardiac ischemic chest pain in patients without obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) and lacks of effective treatment means. Medicine food homology (MFH) involves substances with both nutritional and medicinal qualities that have the potential to improve MVA symptoms as medicines, dietary supplements. However, research on MFH formula (MFHF) for MVA is not available. The study aims to generate a core MFHF for MVA through data mining and offer scientific backing for the utilization of edible medications in the prevention and alleviation of MVA. 11 databases were utilized to construct a database of MFH drugs, and the MFHF was generated through frequency analysis, association rule analysis, and clustering analysis. The composition of the formula is Codonopsis Radix, Astragali Radix, Platycodonis Radix, Persicae Semen, Glycyrrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, and Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus. Through network pharmacology and molecular docking, we identified five major active components of MFHF: Adenosine, Nonanoic Acid, Lauric Acid, Caprylic Acid, and Enanthic Acid, along with nine core targets (NFKB1, ALB, AKT1, ACTB, TNF, IL6, ESR1, CASP3, and PTGS) for the improvement of MVA. These 5 active components have various biological activities, such as reducing oxidative stress, anti-inflammation, analgesia effect, inhibiting platelet aggregation, vasodilatation, vascular endothelial protection, and cardio-protection. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses revealed that MFHF mainly acted on the response to xenobiotic stimulus, integrative component of the plasma membrane, RNA polymerase II transcription factor activity, ligand-activated sequence-specific DNA binding, pathways in cancer, lipid and atherosclerosis, human cytomegalovirus infection, and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, which are the main pathogenesis of MVA.

ABSTRACT

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) drives numerous biogeochemical processes (e.g. carbon cycling) in agro-ecosystems and is sensitive to fertilization management. Nevertheless, changes in the quantity and quality of DOM in the vertical soil profile following long-term continuous nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) inputs remain unclear. In this study, the contents and optical characteristics of DOM along a 2-m soil profile were investigated using a 40-year wheat/maize rotation combined with experiments using different N and P fertilization rates in the North China Plain. The results revealed that the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content decreased with an increase in soil depths. Compared with that in the control (no fertilization), 40-year N, P, and N + P additions increased the soil DOC content by 26%-69%, except for 270-kg N, and 67.5-kg P treatments. N + P application resulted in higher DOC contents than N-alone and P-alone applications. N, P, and N + P inputs increased or did not affect the aromaticity and hydrophobicity of DOM at 0-40 cm but reduced them from 40 to 200 cm. Compared with that in the control, N, P, and N + P inputs enhanced the content of humic acid-like substances (C1+C2+C3+C4) and decreased the content of protein-like substance (C5). C1 was the dominant component among the five DOM, representing the microbial humic component. Optical indices also indicated that soil DOM primarily originated from microbial sources. Nutrient addition accelerated transformation between complex C1 and simple C5 via promoting microbial activities. These results imply that N and P fertilizers increased the DOM content and altered its composition, thereby potentially affecting the stability of soil organic matter in the agroe-cosystems.

ABSTRACT

Background: The correlation between osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), both significant components of arthritis, and erectile dysfunction (ED) has yet to be thoroughly investigated. Aim: In this study we aimed to assess the association of OA and RA with ED. Methods: In this observational study we used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted between 2001 and 2004. Various statistical analyses were employed to investigate the associations of OA and RA with ED, including multivariable logistic regression analysis and subgroup analysis. Outcomes: The primary outcome for this investigation was arthritis as assessed through self-reporting. Results: In this comprehensive nationally representative survey spanning 4 years, our findings revealed a notably elevated incidence of ED within both OA and RA populations in comparison to the general population. Additional research is imperative to provide a deeper understanding of these correlations and their potential implications for both pathogenesis and treatment strategies. Clinical Implications: The research outcomes reported here may serve as a valuable guide for clinicians to assist OA and RA patientsin staying vigilant in addressing their sexual health concerns. Strengths and Limitations: We explored the association of OA and RA with ED. However, this is only a cross-sectional study. Conclusion: In this comprehensive nationally representative survey spanning 4 years, our findings revealed a notably elevated incidence of ED within both OA and RA patient populations in comparison to the general population. Ongoing research is imperative to provide a deeper understanding of these correlations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Numerous researches have indicated a correlation between the intake of dietary micronutrients and the occurrence of constipation. Nevertheless, the correlation between constipation and vitamin B1 remains uninvestigated. The main aim of this research was to examine the association between chronic constipation and the consumption of vitamin B1 in the diet among adult participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS: This study used data from the NHANES, a survey on health and nutrition conducted between 2005 and 2010. The respondents' dietary information was gathered by utilizing the 24-hour dietary records. Various statistical analyses, such as multiple logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and curve-fitting analysis, were employed to investigate the correlation between dietary intake of vitamin B1 and chronic constipation. RESULTS: In the trial, there were 10,371 participants, out of which 1,123 individuals (10.8%) were identified as having chronic constipation. Fully adjusted multiple logistic regression analyses showed that increasing dietary intake of vitamin B1 (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.77-0.99) was significantly associated with a reduced risk of constipation. Following adjustment for multiple variables in Model 3, the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the third tertile, in comparison to the first tertile (reference group), was 0.80 (0.65, 0.99). In addition, subgroup analyses and interaction tests showed a significant inverse association between vitamin B1 intake and the prevalence of constipation, especially among men, non-hypertensive, and non-diabetic individuals (all P-values less than 0.05). CONCLUSION: This research uncovered an inverse correlation between the consumption of vitamin B1 in the diet and the occurrence of chronic constipation. One potential explanation for this phenomenon is that the consumption of vitamin B1 in one's diet is linked to the softening of stools and an augmented occurrence of colonic peristalsis. Additional extensive prospective research is required to thoroughly examine the significance of thiamine in long-term constipation.

ABSTRACT

The reconstruction of posterior lamellar eyelid defects remains a significant challenge in clinical practice due to anatomical complexity, specialized function, and aesthetic concerns. The ideal substitute for the posterior lamellar should replicate the native tarsoconjunctival tissue, providing both mechanical support for the eyelids and a smooth surface for the globe after implantation. In this study, we present an innovative approach utilizing tissue-engineered cartilage (TEC) grafts generated from rabbit auricular chondrocytes and a commercialized type I collagen sponge to reconstruct critical-sized posterior lamellar defects in rabbits. The TEC grafts demonstrated remarkable mechanical strength and maintained a stable cartilaginous phenotype both in vitro and at 6 months post-implantation in immunodeficient mice. When employed as autografts to reconstruct tarsal plate defects in rabbits' upper eyelids, these TEC grafts successfully restored normal eyelid morphology, facilitated smooth eyelid movement, and preserved the histological structure of the conjunctival epithelium. When applied in bilayered tarsoconjunctival defect reconstruction, these TEC grafts not only maintained the normal contour of the upper eyelid but also supported conjunctival epithelial cell migration and growth from the defect margin towards the centre. These findings highlight that auricular chondrocyte-based TEC grafts hold great promise as potential candidates for clinical posterior lamellar reconstruction. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The complex structure and function of the posterior lamellar eyelid continue to be significant challenges for clinical reconstructive surgeries. In this study, we utilized autologous auricular chondrocyte-based TEC grafts for posterior lamellar eyelid reconstruction in a preclinical rabbit model. The TEC grafts exhibited native cartilaginous histomorphology and comparable mechanical strength to those of the native human tarsal plate. In rabbit models with either tarsal plate defects alone or bilayered tarsoconjunctival defects, TEC grafts successfully restored the normal eyelid contour and movement, as well as supported preservation and growth of conjunctival epithelium. This is the first study to demonstrate autologous TEC grafts can be employed for repairing tarsal plate defects, thereby offering an alternative therapeutic approach for treating posterior lamellar defects in clinic settings.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The association between reproductive lifespan and depression in older women is unclear. We conducted this analysis to explore whether a shorter reproductive lifespan is associated with higher odds of depression, while also considering the age at menarche and age at menopause. METHODS: This observational study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which was conducted between 2005 and 2018. Reproductive lifespan was defined as years from age at menarche to age at menopause. Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore the relationship between the association of reproductive life span, age at menarche and age at menopause with the incidence of depression. RESULTS: Totally, 2947 patients aged 60 and above were enrolled in the trial, with 241 individuals (8.18 %) diagnosed with depression. Higher odds of depression were found to be significantly correlated with a shorter reproductive lifespan [Odds Ratio (OR) = 0.95, 95 % Confidence interval (CI) = 0.92-0.98] or an earlier ager at menopause (OR = 0.95, 95 % CI = 0.92-0.99), according to the results of multivariable logistic regression analysis after full adjustment. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests indicated a similar association. LIMITATIONS: The cross-sectional study could not yield any conclusions regarding causality. CONCLUSION: In this large cross-sectional study, our result suggested that populations with a shorter reproductive lifespan or an earlier age at menopause were significantly more likely to have depressive symptoms in older U.S. women. Further large-scale prospective studies are warranted for a comprehensive analysis of the role of the reproductive lifespan and age at menopause in depression.

ABSTRACT

Obesity-related metabolic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases pose a significant threat to health. However, comprehensive pathogenesis exploration and effective therapy development are impeded by the limited availability of human models. Notably, advances in organoid technology enable the generation of adipose organoids that recapitulate structures and functions of native human adipose tissues to investigate mechanisms and develop corresponding treatments for obesity-related metabolic diseases. Here, we review the general principles, sources, and three-dimensional techniques for engineering adipose organoids, along with strategies to promote maturation. We also outline the application of white adipose organoids, primarily for disease modeling and drug screening, and highlight the therapeutic potential of thermogenic beige and brown adipose organoids in promoting weight loss and glucose and lipid metabolic homeostasis. We also discuss the challenges and prospects in the establishment and bench-to-bedside of adipose organoids, as well as their potential applications.

ABSTRACT

Comprehensive and dynamic studies of cellulose pyrolysis reaction mechanisms are crucial in designing experiments and processes with enhanced safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The details of the pyrolysis mechanism are not readily available from experiments but can be better described via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. However, the large size of cellulose molecules challenges accurate ab initio MD simulations, while existing reactive force field parameters lack precision. In this work, precise ab initio deep learning potentials field (DPLF) are developed and applied in MD simulations to facilitate the study of cellulose pyrolysis mechanisms. The formation mechanism and production rate of both valuable and greenhouse products from cellulose at temperatures larger than 1073 K are comprehensively described. This study underscores the critical role of advanced simulation techniques, particularly DLPF, in achieving efficient and accurate understanding of cellulose pyrolysis mechanisms, thus promoting wider industrial applications.

The present study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of three imaging tests: X-ray, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for subtle Lisfranc injuries and three anatomical subtype injuries. The non-weight-bearing X-ray, CT and MRI imaging results of patients with subtle Lisfranc injuries from September 2013 to March 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Subtle Lisfranc injuries and three anatomical subtypes (first, second and cuneiform rays) were diagnosed based on the surgical reports. The diagnostic performance of X-ray, CT and MRI was compared. The sensitivity (Sn), specificity (Sp), positive predictive value, negative predictive value, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and κ coefficient were reported. A total of 31 patients were included in the study. The correct diagnosis was made in 48.4% (15/31), 87.1% (27/31) and 96.8% (30/31) of patients by X-ray, CT and MRI, respectively. A total of 54 different anatomical injuries were found intraoperatively in all patients, with MRI and CT having high agreement (Sn, 72.2 and 87.0%; κ, 0.69 and 0.78, respectively) and X-ray having a low agreement (Sn, 29.6%; κ, 0.26) with the surgical findings. Regarding the first-ray injuries, CT had the highest Sn (76.9%), Sp (100%) and AUC (0.885) in diagnosing subtle Lisfranc injuries. MRI showed the best Sn (88.5 and 93.3%, respectively) and AUC (0.942 and 0.904, respectively) in both second and cuneiform rays. In conclusion, non-weight-bearing X-rays had poor diagnostic accuracy for subtle Lisfranc injuries and their subtypes. CT was superior to X-rays and MRI in diagnosing first-ray injuries. Although not significantly different from CT in terms of overall diagnosis, MRI was superior to X-ray and CT in diagnosing second and cuneiform-ray injuries.

OBJECTIVES: While lipid metabolism disorder is widely acknowledged as a contributing factor to inflammation, the association between remnant cholesterol (RC), which indicates lipid metabolism, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has not been investigated. Accordingly, this study evaluated whether RC is associated with RA disease events. METHODS: Data were collected and specifically extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2008 database. The RC value was derived by subtracting the combined amount of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) from the total cholesterol (TC). The association between RC and RA was evaluated using multivariate regression analysis and subgroup analysis. RESULTS: The study analyzed 7777 patients, of which 581 patients (7.47%) were diagnosed with RA. After accounting for different covariates, the multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed a notable correlation between increased RC levels and an increased likelihood of RA (odds ratio OR = 1.54; 95% confidence interval CI: 1.11-2.13; P = 0.0092). The interaction test did not yield statistically significant effects on this association. The linear correlation between RC and RA was observed within restricted cubic spline regression model limitations. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that higher RC levels are associated with increased odds of RA, indicating that RC can serve as a novel and convenient index for forecasting the likelihood of RA in the United States. Additionally, these findings offer insights into early intervention strategies for susceptible populations at risk of developing RA.

ABSTRACT

Diabetes presents a pressing healthcare crisis, necessitating innovative solutions. Organoid technologies have rapidly advanced, leading to the emergence of bioengineering islet organoids as an unlimited source of insulin-producing cells for treating insulin-dependent diabetes. This advancement surpasses the need for cadaveric islet transplantation. However, clinical translation of this approach faces two major limitations: immature endocrine function and the absence of a perfusable vasculature compared to primary human islets. In this review, we summarize the latest developments in bioengineering functional islet organoids in vitro and promoting vascularization of organoid grafts before and after transplantation. We highlight the crucial roles of the vasculature in ensuring long-term survival, maturation, and functionality of islet organoids. Additionally, we discuss key considerations that must be addressed before clinical translation of islet organoid-based therapy, including functional immaturity, undesired heterogeneity, and potential tumorigenic risks.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Previous studies have confirmed that Achilles tendon occurs Achilles thickening after repair surgery of the rupture. Although this mechanism has been elucidated in the laboratory, there are few reports on its impact on clinical function. We designed a retrospective study to investigate the Achilles thickening after Achilles tendon rupture repair and its correlation between the elasticity and postoperative function. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, patients who underwent surgical treatment for acute Achilles tendon rupture from April 2016 to April 2020 were included. All the patients were regularly followed up at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years after surgery. American Orthopaedic Foot Ankle Surgeon (AOFAS) scale and Leppilahti score were used to evaluate functional outcomes. Achilles elasticity was measured by ultrasound shear wave of elasticity. Achilles thickening was calculated as maximal transverse and longitudinal diameter in cross-sectional plane of magnetic resonance scan. Sample t-tests was used for different follow-up periods. Correlation between Achilles thickening and other factors were analyzed using Pearson's method. p < 0.05 indicates a statistically significant difference. RESULTS: AOFAS scale and Leppilahti score at 1 year were significantly higher than at 3 months postoperatively (both p < 0.001). These functional scales were also improved at 2-year follow-up significantly (both p < 0.001). The dorsiflexion difference showed gradually recovery in each follow-up period (t = -17.907, p < 0.001). The elasticity of the Achilles appeared to continuously decreases during the postoperative follow-up period in all position sets (p < 0.001). In thickening evaluation, the cross-sectional area of the thickest plane of Achilles was significantly higher at 1 year postoperatively (310.5 ± 25.2) mm2 than that at 3 months postoperatively ((278.0 ± 26.2) mm2, t = -8.219, p < 0.001) and became thinner in 2-year magnetic resonance scan ((256.1 ± 15.1) mm2, t = 16.769, p < 0.001). The correlations between Achilles thickening, elasticity, and functional outcome did not show statistical significance (p > 0.05) in every follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Achilles tendon thickens after surgery in the 1st year, but begins to gradually return to thinning about 2 years after surgery. There was no significant correlation between the increase and decrease of thickening and the patients' clinical function scores, Achilles elasticity, and bilateral ankle dorsiflexion difference.

ABSTRACT

Although tumor models have revolutionized perspectives on cancer aetiology and treatment, current cell culture methods remain challenges in constructing organotypic tumor with in vivo-like complexity, especially native characteristics, leading to unpredictable results for in vivo responses. Herein, the bioorthogonal nanoengineering strategy (BONE) for building photothermal dynamic tumor spheroids is developed. In this process, biosynthetic machinery incorporated bioorthogonal azide reporters into cell surface glycoconjugates, followed by reacting with multivalent click ligand (ClickRod) that is composed of hyaluronic acid-functionalized gold nanorod carrying dibenzocyclooctyne moieties, resulting in rapid construction of tumor spheroids. BONE can effectively assemble different cancer cells and immune cells together to construct heterogenous tumor spheroids is identified. Particularly, ClickRod exhibited favorable photothermal activity, which precisely promoted cell activity and shaped physiological microenvironment, leading to formation of dynamic features of original tumor, such as heterogeneous cell population and pluripotency, different maturation levels, and physiological gradients. Importantly, BONE not only offered a promising platform for investigating tumorigenesis and therapeutic response, but also improved establishment of subcutaneous xenograft model under mild photo-stimulation, thereby significantly advancing cancer research. Therefore, the first bioorthogonal nanoengineering strategy for developing dynamic tumor models, which have the potential for bridging gaps between in vitro and in vivo research is presented.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Insulin resistance is a well-established contributor to inflammation; however, the specific association between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, a biomarker reflecting insulin resistance, and arthritis remains unexplored. As a result, the main aim of this study was to examine the correlation between the TyG index and arthritis. METHODS: This observational study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which was conducted between 2007 and 2018. To investigate the relationship between the TyG index and arthritis, various statistical analyses were employed, including weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis, subgroup analysis, curve fit analysis, and threshold effect analysis. RESULTS: In total, 14,817 patients were enrolled in the trial, with 4,191 individuals (28.29%) diagnosed with arthritis. An increased risk of arthritis was found to be significantly correlated with higher TyG index values (odds ratio OR = 1.15, 95% confidence interval CI: 1.07-1.23), according to the results of multivariable logistic regression analysis after full adjustment. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests further indicated that the TyG index exhibited an additive effect when combined with other established risk factors, including age (OR = 1.29; 95% CI: 1.17-1.41), body mass index (BMI) (OR = 1.43; 95% CI: 1.24-1.69), and diabetes (OR = 1.20; 95% CI: 1.11-1.31). Additionally, curve fit analysis and threshold effect analysis demonstrated a nonlinear relationship with a breakpoint identified at 8.08 µmol/L. CONCLUSION: The TyG index was positively correlated with arthritis in adults under 60 years of age in the United States who had normal weight and no diabetes. Further large-scale prospective studies are warranted for a comprehensive analysis of the role of the TyG index in arthritis.

ABSTRACT

To study the charge separation (CS) and long-lived CS state, we prepared a series of dyads based on naphthalimide (NI, electron acceptor) and phenothiazine (PTZ, electron donor), with an intervening phenyl linker attached on the N-position of both moieties. The purpose is to exploit the electron spin control effect to prolong the CS-state lifetime by formation of the 3CS state, instead of the ordinary 1CS state, the spin-correlated radical pair (SCRP), or the free ion pairs. The electronic coupling magnitude is tuned by conformational restriction exerted by the methyl groups on the phenyl linker. Differently from the previously reported NI-PTZ analogues containing long and flexible linkers, we observed a significant CS emission band centered at ca. 600 nm and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with a lifetime of 13.8 ns (population ratio: 42%)/321.6 µs (56%). Nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy indicates that in cyclohexane (CHX), only the 3NI* state was observed (lifetime τ = 274.7 µs), in acetonitrile (ACN), only the CS state was observed (τ = 1.4 µs), whereas in a solvent with intermediate polarity, such as toluene (TOL), both the 3NI* (shorter-lived) and the CS states were observed. Observation of the long-lived CS state in ACN, yet lack of TADF, confirms the spin-vibronic coupling theoretical model of TADF. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy indicates that charge separation occurs in both nonpolar and polar solvents, with time constants ranging from less than 1 ps in ACN to ca. 60 ps in CHX. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra indicate the existence of the 3NI* and CS states for the dyads upon photoexcitation. The electron spin-spin dipole interaction magnitude of the radical anion and cation of the CS state is intermediate between that of a typical SCRP and a 3CS state, suggesting that the long CS-state lifetime is partially due to the electron spin control effect.

ABSTRACT

Reconstruction of posterior lamellar eyelids remains challenging due to their delicate structure, highly specialized function, and cosmetic concerns. Current clinically available techniques for posterior lamellar reconstruction mainly focus on reconstructing the contour of the eyelids. However, the posterior lamella not only provides structural support for the eyelid but also offers a smooth mucosal surface to facilitate globe movement and secrete lipids to maintain ocular surface homeostasis. Bioengineered posterior lamellar substitutes developed via acellular or cellular approaches have shown promise as alternatives to current therapies and encouraging outcomes in animal studies and clinical conditions. Here, we provide a brief reference on the current application of autografts, biomaterials, and tissue-engineered substitutes for posterior lamellar eyelid reconstruction. We also shed light on future challenges and directions for eyelid regeneration strategies and offer perspectives on transitioning replacement strategies to regeneration strategies for eyelid reconstruction in the future.

ABSTRACT

The aquila optimization algorithm (AO) is an efficient swarm intelligence algorithm proposed recently. However, considering that AO has better performance and slower late convergence speed in the optimization process. For solving this effect of AO and improving its performance, this paper proposes an enhanced aquila optimization algorithm with a velocity-aided global search mechanism and adaptive opposition-based learning (VAIAO) which is based on AO and simplified Aquila optimization algorithm (IAO). In VAIAO, the velocity and acceleration terms are set and included in the update formula. Furthermore, an adaptive opposition-based learning strategy is introduced to improve local optima. To verify the performance of the proposed VAIAO, 27 classical benchmark functions, the Wilcoxon statistical sign-rank experiment, the Friedman test and five engineering optimization problems are tested. The results of the experiment show that the proposed VAIAO has better performance than AO, IAO and other comparison algorithms. This also means the introduction of these two strategies enhances the global exploration ability and convergence speed of the algorithm.
