ABSTRACT

Exciton-polaritons, hybrid quasiparticles from the strong coupling of excitons and cavity photons in semiconductor microcavities, offer a platform for exploring quantum coherence and nonlinear optical properties. The unique polariton parametric scattering (PPS) laser is of interest for its potential in quantum technologies and nonlinear devices. However, direct resonant excitation of polaritons in strong-coupling microcavities is challenging. This study proposes an innovative two-photon absorption (TPA) pump mechanism to address this. We observe TPA-driven PPS lasing in a strongly coupled microcavity at room temperature. High K-value exciton injections promote coherent stimulated emission of polariton scattering through intermode channels. Angle-resolved spectra confirm a TPA process, showing evolution from pump-state to signal-state. Hanbury Brown-Twiss measurement of second-order correlation g2(τ) of signal state indicates a phase transition from a classical thermal state to a quantum coherent state. Theoretical modeling provides insights into the physical mechanisms of PPS. Our work advances nonlinear phenomena exploration in strongly coupled light-matter systems, contributing to quantum polaritonics and nonlinear optics.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the clinical effects of dietary education intervention utilizing the nudge strategy in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of T2DM and its associated complications presents a significant health challenge. While the benefits of dietary education intervention for blood glucose management are widely acknowledged, patients often struggle to adhere to dietary recommendations. The implementation of the nudge strategy may offer a promising solution to change unhealthy dietary behavior and enhance diabetes control among individuals with T2DM. METHODS: This is a sub-study within a broader cluster-randomized trial that evaluated the effects of nudge-based dietary education and traditional dietary education intervention. Measurements of HbA1c, fasting blood glucose (FBG), body mass index (BMI), blood lipid levels, blood pressure, dietary behavior, and diabetes distress were assessed at baseline and 3 months after the intervention in 147 individuals with T2DM from six primary care practices in Beijing, China. RESULTS: All outcome measurements were complete at two time points for 134 participants. Results showed that compared to the control group, the intervention group achieved a significantly greater reduction in HbA1c, FBG, BMI, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood pressure, total energy intake, carbohydrate intake, fat intake, and protein intake and had lower diabetes distress. The intervention group also maintained HDL-C levels and had a significantly greater increase in vegetable intake, while changes in triglycerides were similar in the two groups . CONCLUSION: The present study provides evidence that nudge strategy-based dietary education intervention is effective in improving blood glucose, BMI, blood lipid levels, and blood pressure and facilitating changes in patients' dietary behavior and diabetes distress. These findings suggest that implementing nudge strategies can contribute to the optimization of T2DM dietary management and overall patient well-being.

ABSTRACT

The stability of bioactive peptides under various food processing conditions is the basis for their use in industrial manufacturing. This study aimed to identify natural ACE inhibitors with excellent stability and investigate their physicochemical properties and putative molecular mechanisms. Five novel ACE inhibitory peptides (QDPLFPL, FPGVSPF, SPAQLLPF, LVPYRP, and WYWPQ) were isolated and identified using RP-HPLC and Nano LC-MS/MS with foxtail millet protein hydrolysates as the raw material. These peptides are non-toxic and exhibit strong ACE inhibitory activity in vitro (IC50 values between 0.13 mg mL-1 and 0.56 mg mL-1). In addition to QDPLFPL, FPGVSPF, SPAQLLPF, LVPYRP, and WYWPQ have excellent human intestinal absorption. Compared to FPGVSPF and SPAQLLPF, the stable helical structure of LVPYRP and WYWPQ allows them to maintain high stability under conditions that mimic gastrointestinal digestion and various food processing (temperatures, pH, sucrose, NaCl, citric acid, sodium benzoate, Cu2+, Zn2+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+). The results of molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation suggest that LVPYRP has greater stability and binding capacity to ACE than WYWPQ. LVPYRP might attach to the active pockets (S1, S2, and S1') of ACE via hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions, then compete with Zn2+ in ACE to demonstrate its ACE inhibitory activity. The binding of LVPYRP to ACE enhances the rearrangement of ACE's active structural domains, with electrostatic and polar solvation energy contributing the most energy to the binding. Our findings suggested that LVPYRP derived from foxtail millet protein hydrolysates has the potential to be incorporated into functional foods to provide antihypertensive benefits.

ABSTRACT

Dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-4) enzyme inhibitors are a promising category of diabetes medications. Bioactive peptides, particularly those derived from bovine milk proteins, play crucial roles in inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme. This study describes a comprehensive strategy for DPP-4 inhibitory peptide discovery and validation that combines machine learning and virtual proteolysis techniques. Five machine learning models, including GBDT, XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, and RF, were trained. Notably, LightGBM demonstrated superior performance with an AUC value of 0.92 ± 0.01. Subsequently, LightGBM was employed to forecast the DPP-4 inhibitory potential of peptides generated through virtual proteolysis of milk proteins. Through a series of in silico screening process and in vitro experiments, GPVRGPF and HPHPHL were found to exhibit good DPP-4 inhibitory activity. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations further confirmed the inhibitory mechanisms of these peptides. Through retracing the virtual proteolysis steps, it was found that GPVRGPF can be obtained from ß-casein through enzymatic hydrolysis by chymotrypsin, while HPHPHL can be obtained from κ-casein through enzymatic hydrolysis by stem bromelain or papain. In summary, the integration of machine learning and virtual proteolysis techniques can aid in the preliminary determination of key hydrolysis parameters and facilitate the efficient screening of bioactive peptides.

OBJECTIVE: China has a serious burden of Postpartum depression (PPD). In order to improve the current situation of high burden of PPD, this study explores the factors affecting PPD from the multidimensional perspectives with physiology, family support and social support covering the full-time chain of pre-pregnancy-pregnancy-postpartum. METHODS: A follow-up survey was conducted in the Qujing First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province from 2020 to 2022, and a total of 4838 pregnant women who underwent antenatal checkups in the hospital were enrolled as study subjects. Mothers were assessed for PPD using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and logistic regression was used to analyse the level of mothers' postnatal depression and identify vulnerability characteristics. RESULTS: The prevalence of mothers' PPD was 46.05%, with a higher prevalence among those who had poor pre-pregnancy health, had sleep problems during pregnancy, and only had a single female fetus. In the family support dimension, only family care (OR = 0.52, 95% CI 0.42-0.64) and only other people care(OR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.64-0.96) were the protective factors of PPD. The experience risk of PPD was higher among mothers who did not work or use internet. CONCLUSION: The PPD level in Yunnan Province was significantly higher than the global and Chinese average levels. Factors affecting mothers' PPD exist in all time stages throughout pregnancy, and the influence of family support and social support on PPD shouldn't be ignored. There is an urgent need to extend the time chain of PPD, move its prevention and treatment forward and broaden the dimensions of its intervention.

ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional single crystal metals, in which the behavior of highly confined optical modes is intertwined with quantum phenomena, are highly sought after for next-generation technologies. Here, we report large area (>104 µm2), single crystal two-dimensional gold flakes (2DGFs) with thicknesses down to a single nanometer level, employing an atomic-level precision chemical etching approach. The decrease of the thickness down to such scales leads to the quantization of the electronic states, endowing 2DGFs with quantum-confinement-augmented optical nonlinearity, particularly leading to more than two orders of magnitude enhancement in harmonic generation compared with their thick polycrystalline counterparts. The nanometer-scale thickness and single crystal quality makes 2DGFs a promising platform for realizing plasmonic nanostructures with nanoscale optical confinement. This is demonstrated by patterning 2DGFs into nanoribbon arrays, exhibiting strongly confined near infrared plasmonic resonances with high quality factors. The developed 2DGFs provide an emerging platform for nanophotonic research and open up opportunities for applications in ultrathin plasmonic, optoelectronic and quantum devices.

ABSTRACT

The mechanisms underlying the organization and evolution of the telencephalic pallium are not yet clear.. To address this issue, we first performed comparative analysis of genes critical for the development of the pallium (Emx1/2 and Pax6) and subpallium (Dlx2 and Nkx1/2) among 500 vertebrate species. We found that these genes have no obvious variations in chromosomal duplication/loss, gene locus synteny or Darwinian selection. However, there is an additional fragment of approximately 20 amino acids in mammalian Emx1 and a poly-(Ala)6-7 in Emx2. Lentiviruses expressing mouse or chick Emx2 (m-Emx2 or c-Emx2 Lv) were injected into the ventricle of the chick telencephalon at embryonic Day 3 (E3), and the embryos were allowed to develop to E12-14 or to posthatchling. After transfection with m-Emx2 Lv, the cells expressing Reelin, Vimentin or GABA increased, and neurogenesis of calbindin cells changed towards the mammalian inside-out pattern in the dorsal pallium and mesopallium. In addition, a behavior test for posthatched chicks indicated that the passive avoidance ratio increased significantly. The study suggests that the acquisition of an additional fragment in mammalian Emx2 is associated with the organization and evolution of the mammalian pallium.

ABSTRACT

Intratumoral hypoxia is widely associated with the development of malignancy, treatment resistance, and worse prognoses. This study aims to investigate the role of hypoxia-related genes (HRG) in the immune landscape, treatment response, and prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The transcriptome and clinical data of HNSCC were downloaded from TCGA and GEO databases, and HNSCC molecular subtypes were identified using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) clustering. Prognostic models were constructed using univariate, Lasso, and multivariate Cox regression analyses. The relationship between HRGs and immune cell infiltration, immune therapy response, and drug sensitivity was evaluated, and a nomogram was constructed. 47 HRGs were differentially expressed in HNSCC, among which 10 genes were significantly associated with HNSCC prognosis. Based on these 10 genes, 2 HNSCC molecular subtypes were identified, which showed significant heterogeneity in terms of prognosis, immune infiltration, and treatment response. A total of 3280 differentially expressed genes were identified between the subtypes. After univariate, Lasso, and multivariate Cox regression analysis, 18 genes were selected to construct a novel prognostic model, which showed a significant correlation with B cells, T cells, and macrophages. Using this model, HNSCC was classified into high-risk and low-risk groups, which exhibited significant differences in terms of prognosis, immune cell infiltration, immune therapy response, and drug sensitivity. Finally, a nomogram based on this model and radiotherapy was constructed, which showed good performance in predicting HNSCC prognosis and guiding personalized treatment strategies. The decision curve analysis demonstrated its better clinical applicability compared to other strategies. HRGs can identify 2 HNSCC molecular subtypes with significant heterogeneity, and the HRG-derived risk model has the potential for prognostic prediction and guiding personalized treatment strategies.

ABSTRACT

Field-emission nanodiodes with air-gap channels based on single ß-Ga2O3 nanowires have been investigated in this work. With a gap of ∼50 nm and an asymmetric device structure, the proposed nanodiode achieves good diode characteristics through field emission in air at room temperature. Measurement results show that the nanodiode exhibits an ultrahigh emission current density, a high enhancement factor of >2300, and a low turn-on voltage of 0.46 V. More impressively, the emission current almost keeps constant over a wide range (8 orders of magnitude) of air pressures below 1 atm. Meanwhile, the fluctuation in field-emission current is below 8.7% during long-time monitoring, which is better than the best reported field-emission device based on ß-Ga2O3 nanostructures. All of these results indicate that ß-Ga2O3 air-gapped nanodiodes are promising candidates for vacuum electronics that can also operate in air.

ABSTRACT

Due to their high optical transparency and electrical conductivity, indium tin oxide thin films are a promising material for photonic circuit design and applications. However, their weak optical nonlinearity has been a substantial barrier to nonlinear signal processing applications. In this study, we show that an atomically thin (~1.5 nm) indium tin oxide film in the form of an air/indium tin oxide/SiO2 quantum well exhibits a second-order susceptibility χ2 of ~1,800 pm V-1. First-principles calculations and quantum electrostatic modelling point to an electronic interband transition resonance in the asymmetric potential energy of the quantum well as the reason for this large χ2 value. As the χ2 value is more than 20 times higher than that of the traditional nonlinear LiNbO3 crystal, our indium tin oxide quantum well design can be an important step towards nonlinear photonic circuit applications.

ABSTRACT

Resistant starch (RS) has been extensively studied because of its beneficial effects on gut microbiota. In this study, four RSs obtained through various preparation processes were utilized for in vitro fermentation, and their structural characteristics before and after fermentation were determined using chromatography, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that these RSs can be classified into two categories based on their fermentation and structural features. The autoclaving RS (ARS) and extruding RS (ERS) were classified as Class I Microbiome Community (MC-I), characterized by a higher proportion of butyrate and its producers, including unclassified_g_Megasphaera and Megasphaera elsdenii. While microwaving RS (MRS) and ultrasound RS (URS) belonged to Class II Microbiome Community (MC-II), marked by a higher proportion of acetate and its producer, Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum DSM 20438. MC-I had a lower molecular weight, shorter chain length, more chains with degree of polymerization (DP) 36-100, and a more ordered structure than MC-II. Furthermore, SEM observations revealed distinct degradation patterns between MC-I and MC-II, which may be attributed to their surface structural characteristics. These findings imply that the preparation methods employed for RS can determine its multilevel structural characteristics, and consequently influence its physiological properties.

ABSTRACT

The resource utilization and valorization of waste tires (WT) are of significant importance in reducing environmental pollution. To produce high-value p-cymene from WT, we propose a catalytic cascade process combining hydropyrolysis and catalytic gas-phase hydrotreating in a two-stage fixed-bed reactor. The effect of catalysts prepared with three different acidic supports on the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation of limonene, a compound derived from the hydropyrolysis of WT, was investigated. The p-cymene formation could be controlled by optimizing process parameters, including hydropyrolysis temperature, hydrogenation temperature, and catalyst-to-feedstock ratio (C/F). Experimental results indicated that, in the absence of a catalyst, limonene was the main product of WT depolymerization. Under optimized conditions (hydropyrolysis temperature of 425 ℃, hydrotreating temperature of 400 ℃, C/F of 10:1, and reaction pressure of 0.15 MPa), the highest relative content of p-cymene (79.1%) was obtained over the Pd/SBA-15 catalyst. This demonstrates that our proposed catalytic cascade process of hydropyrolysis and selective gas-phase hydrogenation/dehydrogenation can convert WT into p-cymene with high added value.

ABSTRACT

With the sharp rise of antibiotic-resistant pathogens worldwide, it is of enormous importance to create new strategies for combating pathogenic bacteria. Here, we create an iron oxide-based spiky artificial peroxidase (POD) with V-O-Fe pair sites (V-Fe2 O3 ) for combating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The experimental studies and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the V-Fe2 O3 can achieve the localized "capture and killing" bifunction from the spiky morphology and massive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The V-Fe2 O3 can reach nearly 100 % bacterial inhibition over a long period by efficiently oxidizing the lipid membrane. Our wound disinfection results identify that the V-Fe2 O3 can not only efficiently eliminate MRSA and their biofilm but also accelerate wound recovery without causing noticeable inflammation and toxicity. This work offers essential insights into the critical roles of V-O-Fe pair sites and localized "capture and killing" in biocatalytic disinfection and provides a promising pathway for the de novo design of efficient artificial peroxidases.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of the specially designed nudging tableware, including a plate and bowl, on individual food choices in normal-weight young adults and preliminarily explore its mechanisms. We hypothesized that the toolset could increase the choice of vegetables and decrease that of rice. METHODS: A randomized, single-blind, two-period crossover trial was carried out among 40 normal-weight university students in China. All subjects completed two buffets separated by an interval of one week, wearing the eye tracker. Vegetable choice, evaluated through the proportion of vegetables, was the primary outcome, and the weight of vegetables and rice were the secondary outcomes. The mechanisms of the decision-making process were preliminarily explored through eye tracking. RESULTS: The usage of the nudging tableware significantly increased the proportion of vegetables and decreased the amount of rice taken (P<0.05), while insignificantly increased the weight of vegetables (P = 0.079). Eye tracking shows that the nudging plate significantly prolonged the food-choosing process and fixation duration on vegetables (P<0.05), and the latter was positively correlated to the increased quantity of vegetables while using the nudging plate (r = 0.493, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The specially designed nudging tableware might be an effective and practical tool to promote the choice of less rice and more vegetables. Mechanisms behind this change might include automatic and unconscious processes with the inconspicuously smaller capacity of the bowl and larger portion size of the vegetable segment, and increased attention triggered by the vegetable patterns and larger green underpainting.

BACKGROUND: Weight management during pregnancy and the postpartum period is an important strategy that can be utilized to reduce the risk of short- and long-term complications in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). We conducted a systematic review to assess and synthesize evidence and recommendations on weight management during pregnancy and the postpartum period in women with GDM to provide evidence-based clinical guidance. METHODS: Nine databases and eighteen websites were searched for clinical decisions, guidelines, recommended practices, evidence summaries, expert consensus, and systematic reviews. RESULTS: A total of 12,196 records were retrieved and fifty-five articles were included in the analysis. Sixty-nine pieces of evidence were summarized, sixty-two of which focused on pregnancy, including benefits, target population, weight management goals, principles, weight monitoring, nutrition assessment and counseling, energy intake, carbohydrate intake, protein intake, fat intake, fiber intake, vitamin and mineral intake, water intake, dietary supplements, sugar-sweetened beverages, sweeteners, alcohol, coffee, food safety, meal arrangements, dietary patterns, exercise assessment and counseling, exercise preparation, type of exercise, intensity of exercise, frequency of exercise, duration of exercise, exercise risk prevention, and pregnancy precautions, and seven focused on the postpartum period, including target population, benefits, postpartum weight management goals, postpartum weight monitoring, dietary recommendations, exercise recommendations, and postpartum precautions. CONCLUSIONS: Healthcare providers can develop comprehensive pregnancy and postpartum weight management programs for women with GDM based on the sixty-nine pieces of evidence. However, because of the paucity of evidence on postpartum weight management in women with GDM, future guidance documents should focus more on postpartum weight management in women with GDM.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the status and influencing factors of two-way social support among old adults. A cross-sectional study of 408 convenient samples of old adults was conducted using socio-demographic questionnaire, Brief 2-Way Social Support Scale, Modified Barthel index, General Well-being Schedule, Family APGAR Index, and Lubben Social Network Scale 6. The two-way social support score for old adults in China was (43.74±7.86), with the receiving and giving social support scoring (22.80±4.06) and (20.94±4.52), respectively. The multiple linear regression analysis revealed that family care, residence place, socioeconomic status, and social network were associated with both receiving and giving social support. Chronic diseases and religious beliefs were related to receiving social support, while gender, general well-being, and residence form were related to giving social support. Tailored interventions based on the distinct influencing factors are needed to enhance old adults' social support both as recipients and providers.

ABSTRACT

Telomere dysfunction has been identified as a biological marker of cancer progression in several types of cancer, including Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC). This study aimed to characterize the telomere maintenance genes (TMG)-related signature in prognosis and treatment response in HNSCC. The transcriptome and clinical data of HNSCC were obtained from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus databases, respectively. Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) was used to identify molecular subtypes derived from TMG. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was performed to analyze the differentially expressed pathways between subtypes, and a risk score model derived from TMG was established. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to evaluate inter-group prognostic features, and the correlation between TMG-derived molecular subtypes and risk score model with immune infiltration, immunotherapy, and chemosensitivity was assessed. Two HNSCC subtypes were identified based on 59 TMG-related genes, which exhibit significant heterogeneity in prognosis, immune cell infiltration, and treatment response. Additionally, a TMG-derived risk signature containing 9 genes was developed to assess the prognosis of HNSCC patients. The signature had significant predictive ability for HNSCC prognosis and was significantly correlated with immune cell infiltration and immunotherapy response. A nomogram integrating the risk signature, N stage and radiotherapy was constructed to predict 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) of HNSCC patients, which had better performance than other prognostic models and included TMG-derived risk score, radiotherapy, and N stage. ABSTRACT

Salmonella, a foodborne pathogen, has become a major public health concern because of its widespread drug resistance, including resistance to multiple drugs such as third-generation cephalosporin, ceftriaxone (CRO). However, the metabolic profile changes and associated mechanisms engendered by cephalosporin-resistant mutations remain uncharted. In this study, we have employed the LC-MS/MS metabolomics platform to determine the metabolic profiles of 138 strains of Salmonella. Our results show that metabolic profiles correspond to specific serotypes, sources, processing stages, and antibiotic resistance patterns. Notably, we observed that Salmonella Derby (S. Derby) with drug resistance to CRO has a different metabolic status with changes in glutathione biosynthesis. Specifically, glutathione oxidized (GSSG) and citrulline abundances are greatly suppressed in CRO-resistant S. Derby. Furthermore, exogenous GSSG or citrulline, but not glutathione reduced (GSH), restored the susceptibility of multidrug-resistant S. Derby to CRO. This study establishes a strategy based on functional metabolomics to manage the survival of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
