ABSTRACT

In this study, medium roasted coffee with four different fermented coffee fruits post-treatments (dry, wet, semi-dry and hot air dry) was used as the material. Chemical profile and sensorial analysis were used to comprehensively analyze the effects of post-treatments on coffee flavor characteristics from multiple dimensions. A total of 31 water-soluble chemical components and 39 volatile compounds were identified in roasted coffee, and distinct post-treatments based on chemical orientation make coffee highly differentiated. In addition, the principal component analysis (PCA) of the chemical composition integrated data set showed that the first two principal components could explain 54.9% of the sample variability. All four post-treatments can be classified as "specialty coffees" according to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) protocol, with various organoleptic characteristics and flavor attributes. As a result, the fermented coffee fruits post-treatment method further determines the quality characteristics of coffee, thus meeting the needs of different niche markets.

ABSTRACT

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages around the world. As one of the best-known coffee species, Liberian coffee (Coffea liberica Bull ex Hiern 1876) has a high resistance to leaf rust, a devasting disease caused by Hemileia vastatrix. However, there are few reports on the systematic position and phylogenetic relationship of C. liberica at the chloroplast (cp) genome level. Thus, we successfully assembled its cp genome. The full length is 154,799 bp with a GC content of 37.48%. We have further annotated the cp genome and predicted 85 protein-coding genes together with 8 rRNAs and 37 tRNAs. Furthermore, a large single copy region (LSC), a small single copy region (SSC), an inverted repeat region a (IRa) and an inverted repeat region b (IRb) are identified with lengths of 84,868 bp, 18,121 bp, 25,905 bp and 25,905 bp, respectively. The phylogenetic tree indicates that C. liberica is closely related to C. canephora, which is consistent with a previous result obtained from genotyping-by-sequencing.

ABSTRACT

Recent advances in natural language based virtual assistants have attracted more researches on application of recommender systems (RS) into the service product domain (e.g., looking for a restaurant or a hotel), given that RS can assist users in more effectively obtaining information. However, though there is emerging study on how the presentation of recommendation (vocal vs. visual) would affect user experiences with RS, little attention has been paid to how the output modality of its explanation (i.e., explaining why a particular item is recommended) interacts with the explanation content to influence user satisfaction. In this work, we particularly consider feature-based explanation, a popular type of explanation that aims to reveal how relevant a recommendation is to the user in terms of its features (e.g., a restaurant's food quality, service, distance, or price), for which we have concretely examined three content design factors as summarized from the literature survey: feature type, contextual relevance, and number of features. Results of our user studies show that, for explanation presented in different modalities (text and voice), the effects of those design factors on user satisfaction with RS are different. Specifically, for text explanations, the number of features and contextual relevance influenced users' satisfaction with the recommender system, but the feature type did not; while for voice explanations, we found no factors influenced user satisfaction. We finally discuss the practical implications of those findings and possible directions for future research.

ABSTRACT

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages around the world, which is mainly produced from the allopolyploid Coffea arabica. The genomes of C. arabica and its two ancestors C. canephora and C. eugenioides have been released due to the development of next generation sequencing. However, few studies on C. arabica are related to the PIN-FORMED (PIN) auxin efflux transporter despite its importance in auxin-mediated plant growth and development. In the present study, we conducted a genome-wide analysis of the PIN gene family in the three coffee species. Totals of 17, 9 and 10 of the PIN members were characterized in C. Arabica, C. canephora and C. eugenioides, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis revealed gene loss of PIN1 and PIN2 homologs in C. arabica, as well as gene duplication of PIN5 homologs during the fractionation process after tetraploidy. Furthermore, we conducted expression analysis of PIN genes in C. arabica by in silico and qRT-PCR. The results revealed the existence of gene expression dominance in allopolyploid coffee and illustrated several PIN candidates in regulating auxin transport and homeostasis under leaf rust fungus inoculation and the tissue-specific expression pattern of C. arabica. Together, this study provides the basis and guideline for future functional characterization of the PIN gene family.

ABSTRACT

Twelve new diterpenoids based on two rare skeletal types, namely, paralianones A-D (1-4) and pepluanols A-H (5-12), along with five known compounds, were isolated from an acetone extract of Euphorbia peplus. Their structures were proposed based on 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data analysis. These diterpenoids were evaluated for potential anti-inflammatory activity in a lipopolysaccharide-stimulated mouse macrophage cellular model. Compounds 3, 4, 11, 13, and 16 displayed moderate inhibitory effects on NO inhibition, with IC50 values ranging from 29.9 to 38.3 µM.

ABSTRACT

Five new ent-kaurane diterpenoids, named mascaroside III-V (1-3), and 20-nor-cofaryloside I-II (4-5), together with seven known diterpenoids, were isolated from methanol extracts of the green coffee beans of Yunnan Arabica Coffee. Their chemical structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses. Meanwhile, cytotoxicity assay against HL-60, A-549, SMMC-7721, MCF-7 and SW480 cell lines showed that they have not evident inhibition of cytotoxicity.

ABSTRACT

Chemical investigation of the fruiting bodies of Ganoderma hainanense resulted in isolation of fourteen lanostane triterpenoids, including nine ganoderma acids and five ganoderma alcohols, together with five known compounds. Structural elucidation was determined using extensive spectroscopic technologies, Mosher's method and X-ray single crystal diffraction. Three of the compounds showed inhibitory activities against HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549 and MCF-7 cells with IC50 values of 15.0-40.0 µM.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To study the 9, 19-cycloartane triterpenes from the roots of Cimicifuga foetida. METHOD: Chromatographic separations by silica gel, C18 reversed phase silica gel, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used. All of the structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis and chemical methods. RESULTS: Five 9, 19-cycloartane triterpenes, (3ß, 12ß, 15α, 24R)-12, 2'-diacetoxy-24, 25-epoxy-15-hydroxy-16, 23-dione-3-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside (1), actein (2), 23-epi-26-deoxyactein (3), asiaticoside B (4), and 12ß-hydroxycimigenol (5) were isolated from the roots of Cimicifuga foetida. CONCLUSION: Compound 1 is a new triterpene with two acetoxy groups at C-2' and C-12.

ABSTRACT

Three new compounds, including two diterpenoids, nemoralisins H and I (1 and 2), and a limonoid, 2-methoxy khayseneganin E (3), along with four known constituents (4-7), were isolated from the leaves and twigs of Swietenia mahagoni. Their chemical structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic analysis. The cytotoxities of these isolated constituents were assayed.

Six new cucurbitane-type triterpenoids, karavilagenin F (1), karavilosides XII and XIII (2, 3), momordicines VI, VII, and VIII (4, 5 and 6), along with four known ones, 5ß,19-epoxy-25-methoxycucurbita-6,23-diene-3ß,19-diol (7), 5ß,19-epoxycucurbita-6, 23-diene-3ß,19,25-triol (8), kuguacin R (9), and (19R,23E)-5ß,19-epoxy-19-methoxycucurbita-6,23,25-trien-3ß-ol (10), were isolated from the stems and leaves of Momordica charantia L. Their chemical structures were elucidated by extensive 1D NMR and 2D NMR (HSQC, HMBC, COSY, and ROESY), MS experiments, and CD spectrum. Compound 6 showed weak cytotoxicity against five human cancer cells lines with IC50 values of 14.3-20.5µmol/L.

ABSTRACT

A phytochemical investigation of the flowers of Rhododendron molle has yielded two new grayanane diterpenoids, rhodomolleins F and G (1, 2). Compounds 1 and 2 possessed an oxo-bridge between C-5 and C-9, and their structures were elucidated on the basis of interpretation of spectroscopic data, including 1D and 2D NMR techniques.
