ABSTRACT

A new CdII-based luminescent metal-organic framework (LMOF) with the formula {[Cd(BIBT)(NDC)]·solvents}n (JXUST-32, BIBT = 4,7-bi(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzo-[2,1,3]thiadiazole and H2NDC = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid) was successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method. JXUST-32 shows a two-dimensional (4,4)-connected network and exhibits significant fluorescence red shift and slight enhancement for H2PO4- and CO32- sensing with detection limits of 0.11 and 0.12 µM, respectively. In addition, JXUST-32 has good thermal stability, chemical stability and recyclability. Significantly, JXUST-32 represents a fluorescence red-shift dual response MOF sensor for H2PO4- and CO32- detection and the analytes can be identified by the naked eye, aerosol jet printing filter paper, light-emitting diode beads and luminescent films.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataract is a common cause of blindness in childhood. About half of the cases have a genetic etiology, and more than 100 genes have been associated with congenital cataracts. This study reports the clinical and genetic findings of a two-generation Chinese family affected by congenital cataract. METHODS: Ophthalmologic examinations were performed for clinical evaluation of the cataract patients. Whole exome sequencing (WES) and Sanger sequencing were used to identify potentially relevant mutations. The online programsProtein Variation Effect Analyzer (PROVEAN) and Sorting Intolerant from Tolerant (SIFT) were employed to predict the impact of variation on protein function. RESULTS: Both the proband and her mother were blind because of bilateral nuclear cataracts, and the elder brother of the proband also manifested obvious bilateral cataracts. Sanger sequencing confirmed the mutations in the proband as well as in her mother. The elder brother simply carried the PAX6 c.221G>A variation. The WFS1 c.2070_2079del variation potentially generates a loss-of-function mutant. CONCLUSION: The novel PAX6mutation (c.221G>A) is associated with congenital cataract, and the WFS1 mutation (c.2070_2079del) may interactively aggravates this process. These findings may increase our understanding of the genetic etiology of congenital cataract.

ABSTRACT

Background: A statin alone or non-statins as add-ons have been introduced to intensive low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) -lowering therapy in patients at risk for high cardiovascular disease (CVD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different rosuvastatin-based regimens for patients at high risk. Methods: Three hundred patients at high CVD risk were randomly assigned to the statin group (rosuvastatin, 20 mg/d), statin_EZ group (statin 10 mg/d + ezetimibe 10 mg/d), statin_pcsk group (statin 10 mg/d + alirocumab 75 mg/2 weeks) or combine3 group (statin 10 mg/d + ezetimibe 10 mg/d + alirocumab 75 mg/2 weeks). The primary outcome measure was cholesterol levels after 24 weeks of follow-up. Secondary outcomes included safety markers and the proportion of patients achieving the 70 mg/dL (1.8 mmol/L) target for LDL-C. A logistic regression model was performed to explore the factors affecting lipid target achievement. Results: The total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-C levels in the four groups after treatment were significantly lower than those before treatment. TC and LDL-C levels after treatment were significantly different among the four groups (p < 0.05). The levels in both the combine3 and statin_pcsk9 groups were significantly lower than those in the statin and statin_EZ groups (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between the combine3 and statin_pcsk9 groups. Fifty-one participants (69%) in the statin_pcsk9 group and 56 participants (78%) in the combine3 group achieved the target. Body mass index (BMI) and hypertensive status were related to LDL-C target achievement. The incidence of adverse events in the four groups was low. Conclusions: The combination of a statin and a PCSK9 inhibitor was safe and more effective for the treatment of high-risk CVD patients, while the addition of ezetimibe was unable to significantly lower lipid levels any further. The rate of achieving the target was higher in patients with hypertension and a low BMI. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to understand the effect of diurnal temperature range (DTR) on childhood asthma in Hefei, China, and to explore the effect of temperature on the DTR-asthma association. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Daily data on hospital admissions for childhood asthma, air pollutants, and weather variables in Hefei, China, from 1st January 2014 to 31st December 2015, were collected. A generalized additive model combined with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to quantify the effects of DTR on the total, age- and gender-specific hospital admissions for childhood asthma. A non-parametric bivariate response surface model, and a generalized additive model combined with a stratified parametric model were used to explore the interaction between DTR and temperature. RESULTS: We observed that high DTR was associated with an increase in hospital admissions for childhood asthma. When DTR increased from 6.7 °C to 16.8 °C (99% percentile), hospital admissions for childhood asthma increased by 13% (relative risk: 1.13, 95% confidence interval: 1.07, 1.12). The analysis stratified, by mean temperature level, suggested that when DTR increased by 1 °C at low temperatures, asthma hospitalizations in total children, girls, boys and school-age children increased by 5.0% (95% CI: 2.6%, 7.5%), 3.7% (95% CI: 0.4%, 5.7%), 2.9% (95% CI: 0.8%, 4.4%) and 5.0% (95% CI: 2.6%, 7.5%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that the impact of high DTR should be considered among public health advice for children with existing asthma. Those days with high DTR and low mean temperature need extra attention.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between social support and AIDS high-risk behaviors in commercial sex workers (CSWs) in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed based on a convenience sample. Data were collected through questionnaire interviews including information about social demographic characteristics, the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) and AIDS knowledge. Multiple logistic regression was performed to evaluate the association between social support and AIDS high-risk behaviors, specifically condom use during commercial sex. RESULTS: A total of 581 commercial sex workers from 4 counties in East China participated in the study. The majority of the participants were 15 to 30 years old (79.7%). Sources of individual and family support were mainly provided by their parents (50.3%), relatives and friends (46.3%), spouses (18.4%), respectively. Univariate analysis revealed that marital status, hobbies, smoking habit, individual monthly income and family monthly income were all significantly correlated with current levels of social support being received (P = 0.04, P = 0.00, P = 0.01, P = 0.01, P = 0.01, respectively). Furthermore, Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that after adjusting for confounding factors, high levels of social support were significantly correlated with increased condom use at the last sexual encounter (P = 0.02, OR = 1.86, 95%CI: 1.10-3.16); and consistently in the past month with clients (P = 0.03, OR = 2.10, 95%CI: 1.09-4.04). CONCLUSION: CSWs with high levels of social support are more likely to use condoms during commercial sex. This suggests that increasing social support can potentially reduce AIDS-related high-risk behaviors and accordingly play an important role in AIDS prevention.
