ABSTRACT

A zinc-mediated cross-electrophile coupling of benzyl sulfonium salts with thiosulfonates via C-S bond cleavage was achieved. The reductive thiolation proceeded well under transition metal-free conditions to afford the desired benzyl sulfides in good yields, exhibiting both broad substrate scope and good functionality tolerance. In addition, the reaction could be applied to the use of selenosulfonate as an effective selenylation agent and be subjected to scale-up synthesis.

ABSTRACT

Midlife has been suggested to be a crucial time to introduce interventions for improving cognitive functions. The effects of cognitive training (CT) in healthy middle-aged populations and more specifically during the menopausal transition have not been systematically investigated. To investigate the effects of CT on cognition in healthy middle-aged adults and specifically in females during the menopause transition, literature was searched inception to July 2023 and studies were included that examined the effects of CT on a defined cognitive outcome. The improvement on cognitive performance following CT was the main outcome measured as mean difference (from baseline to immediate post) estimates with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) in meta-analysis and was discussed with the support of subgroup analysis based on outcome type (i.e., far or near-transfer) and cluster tabulations. Nineteen articles were included in the qualitative synthesis with a total of 7765 individuals, and eight articles were included in the meta-analyses. CT was categorized into six type clusters: Game-based CT, General CT, Speed of Processing Training, Working Memory Training, Strategy-based CT, and Cognitive Remediation. Cognitive outcome was divided into six clusters: working memory, verbal memory, language, executive function, attention/processing speed, and visual memory. Meta-analysis reported significant improvement in the domain of executive function (0.48, 95% CI 0.08-0.87), verbal memory (0.22, 95% CI 0.11-0.33), and working memory (0.16, 95% CI 0.05-0.26). CT confers benefits on various cognitive domains, suggesting a potential role of CT to promote optimal cognitive functioning in the midlife and specifically in women during the menopause transition.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Emergence delirium (ED) presents challenges for both parents and health care providers in pediatric surgical settings. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality (VR) distraction and video distraction combined with parental presence in reducing ED in preschool-aged children undergoing elective surgery. DESIGN: A prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted with 90 children ages 4 to 7. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups: VR distraction (group V), tablet video distraction with parental presence (group T), and standard care (group C). The primary endpoints were the incidence of ED and Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium Scale scores, with secondary measures encompassing scores from the Parental Separation Anxiety Scale and the Faces, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability (FLACC) scale. METHODS: Participants were assigned to one of the three intervention groups, and relevant scales were used to assess ED, parental separation anxiety, and postoperative pain. The immersive VR distraction and video distraction with parental presence interventions were compared against standard care. FINDINGS: Immersive VR distraction significantly reduced the incidence of ED (6.67% in group V vs 40% in group T and 60% in group C), and the incidence of ED in group V was notably lower than in the other groups (P = .023 vs group T and P = .004 vs group C). Children in group V displayed significantly lower FLACC compared with the other groups as well (P < .05). However, no significant differences between the 3 groups were observed in perioperative anxiety as assessed by the Parental Separation Anxiety Scale scores (P = .27). CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the potential of immersive VR distraction as an effective intervention for mitigating ED in pediatric surgical patients. The findings suggest that incorporating VR technology during the perioperative period can positively impact postoperative outcomes. Further research in diverse surgical contexts is recommended to validate these findings and explore the broader applicability of VR distraction in pediatric health care settings.

ABSTRACT

Growth substrates are essential for aquaponic systems and play an important role in vegetable growth and water quality. In this study, we explored an innovative combination of coconut bran and coconut shell biochar (CSB) as a composite growth substrate for lettuce cultivation in aquaponic systems. The study included the control (100 % coconut bran as the growth substrate) and treatment groups (T1-T5; containing 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 %, and 50 % CSB as the growth substrate, respectively). The substrate properties; lettuce growth performance; and soil enzyme activity, nitrogen content, and abundance of microbial communities in the substrate were analyzed to determine the optimal substrate. Our findings indicated that CSB incorporation significantly altered the properties of the substrate, resulting in increased dry and bulk densities, pH, and water-holding capacity, and decreased electrical conductivity, water-absorption capacity, and porosity. Furthermore, the fresh weight of lettuce was notably increased in the treatment groups. The activities of fluorescein diacetate hydrolase, urease, nitrate reductase, and hydroxylamine reductase initially increased and further decreased, reaching the maximum in the T3 group. Conversely, the activity of nitrite reductase and contents of available nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, and ammonium-nitrogen in the substrates initially decreased and further increased, with the minimum values observed in the T3 group. The microbial sequencing results indicated that CSB incorporation significantly increased the microbial diversity and relative abundance of microorganisms associated with nitrogen transformation. Moreover, 30 % CSB incorporation exhibited the greatest effect on lettuce growth, with a 34.5 % and 31.6 % increase in fresh weight compared to the control during the growth and harvest periods, respectively. This study indicated the enormous potential of biochar in the research and development of green technologies for substrate amendment in aquaponic systems.

ABSTRACT

Circular RNA (circRNA) has been widely studied as a competitive endogenous RNA targeting microRNA (miRNA)/messenger RNA to regulate cancer progression. However, the regulatory mechanism of circ_0023179 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. The expression levels of circ_0023179, miR-615-5p and Cadherin 3 (CDH3) in NSCLC were detected using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The stability of circ_0023179 was verified using ribonuclease R enzyme, actinomycin D and agarose gel electrophoresis. Colony formation and thymidine analog 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine assays were performed to examine proliferation changes in NSCLC cells. Western blot was used to assess the levels of CDH3 and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related marker proteins to evaluate EMT. Dual-luciferase reporter, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP), and RNA pull-down assays were performed to explore the potential mechanisms of circ_0023179 in regulating NSCLC progression. Finally, the effects of circ_0023179 on NSCLC tumour growth in vivo were explored using a nude mouse subcutaneous tumour model. The results showed that the expression of circ_0023179 was remarkably higher in NSCLC tissues and cells, and it had a significant effect on NSCLC cell proliferation. Additionally, the knockdown of circ_0023179 significantly inhibited tumour growth in NSCLC mice. Mechanistically, circ_0023179 alleviated its inhibition of downstream CDH3 through the sponge-like adsorption of miR-615-5p. The downregulation of miR-615-5p and the upregulation of CDH3 mitigated the inhibitory effect of silencing circ_0023179 on NSCLC cell proliferation. In conclusion, silencing circ_0023179 inhibited NSCLC cell proliferation by targeting the miR-615-5p/CDH3 axis involved in NSCLC progression.

Keloids are defined as a benign dermal fibroproliferative disorder, with excessive fibroblast proliferation, and excessive overproduction of collagen. Although the heterogeneity during keloid development has been extensively studied, the heterogeneity across different skin states is still unclear. So, a global comparison across skin states is needed. In this study, we collected samples from 5 states of skin, including melanoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, keloid skin, scar skin, and healthy control samples. The heterogeneity of cell types and subtypes was analyzed and compared across 5 states, and we observed significant differences among them. Our results showed a cancer-like fibroblast, which is not in normal samples, may play an important role in antigen processing and presentation. We also noticed that the mesenchymal fibroblast increased in keloid samples, which highly expressed POSTN. And POSTN may participate in epithelial-mesenchymal transition and collagen overexpression to promote keloid growth. These findings help to understand the alteration among different skin states and provide potential genetic basis for keloid therapies.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is the best way to prevent influenza virus infection, and insufficient antibodies make it difficult to resist influenza virus invasion. Astragalus Polysaccharide (APS) has a boosting effect on immunity, so we evaluate the effect of APS as an immune adjuvant for H1N1 influenza vaccines in this study. METHODS: The mice were immunized twice with influenza A (H1N1) vaccine and APS. Subsequently, the serum antibody levels were assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The frequency of peripheral immune T cells was determined by flow cytometry. Following this, the immunized mice were exposed to a lethal dose of the virus, and changes in body weight and survival rates were recorded. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was employed to observe pathological alterations in lung and intestinal tissues. Western blot analysis was conducted to detect the expression of intestinal barrier function proteins (Occludin and Claudin-1). ELISA was utilized to measure the expression level of serum inflammatory cytokine TNF-α. Fresh mouse feces were collected after the initial immunization as well as after viral infection for 16S rRNA analysis aimed at detecting alterations in gut microbiota. RESULTS: Compared to the Hemagglutinin (HA) group, the APS group demonstrated higher levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgG1, and IgG3, as well as neutralizing antibody levels. Additionally, it increased the frequency of CD8+ cells to enhance resistance against lethal infection. On day 14 post-infection, the high-dose APS group exhibited a higher survival rate (71.40 %) compared to the HA group (14.28 %), along with faster weight recovery. Furthermore, APS was found to ameliorate alveolar damage in lung tissue and rectify intestinal structural disorder. It also upregulated the expression levels of tight junction proteins Occludin and Claudin-1 in intestinal tissue while reducing serum TNF-α expression levels. In addition, populations of Colidextribacter, Peptococcaceae, and Ruminococcaceae were the dominant gut microbiota in the APS group after viral infection. CONCLUSION: APS has an immune-enhancing effect and is expected to be a novel adjuvant in the H1N1 influenza vaccine.

OBJECTIVES: T helper 9 (Th9) cells are recognised for their characteristic expression of the transcription factor PU.1 and production of interleukin-9 (IL-9), which has been implicated in various autoimmune diseases. However, its precise relationship with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) pathogenesis needs to be further clarified. METHODS: The expression levels of PU.1 and IL-9 in patients with RA were determined by ELISA, western blotting (WB) and immunohistochemical staining. PU.1-T cell-conditional knockout (KO) mice, IL-9 KO and IL-9R KO mice were used to establish collagen antibody-induced arthritis (CAIA), respectively. The inhibitor of PU.1 and IL-9 blocking antibody was used in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). In an in vitro study, the effects of IL-9 were investigated using siRNAs and IL-9 recombinant proteins. Finally, the underlying mechanisms were further investigated by luciferase reporter analysis, WB and Chip-qPCR. RESULTS: The upregulation of IL-9 expression in patients with RA exhibited a positive correlation with clinical markers. Using CAIA and CIA model, we demonstrated that interventions targeting PU.1 and IL-9 substantially mitigated the inflammatory phenotype. Furthermore, in vitro assays provided the proinflammatory role of IL-9, particularly in the hyperactivation of macrophages and fibroblast-like synoviocytes. Mechanistically, we uncovered that PU.1 and IL-9 form a positive feedback loop in RA: (1) PU.1 directly binds to the IL-9 promoter, activating its transcription and (2) Th9-derived IL-9 induces PU.1 via the IL-9R-JAK1/STAT3 pathway. CONCLUSIONS: These results support that the PU.1-IL-9 axis forms a positive loop in Th9 dysregulation of RA. Targeting this signalling axis presents a potential target approach for treating RA.

The clinical treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still a heavy burden worldwide. Intracellular microRNAs (miRNAs) commonly express abnormally in cancers, thus they are potential therapeutic targets for cancer treatment. miR-21 is upregulated in HCC whereas miR-122 is enriched in normal hepatocyte but downregulated in HCC. In our study, we first generated a reporter genetic switch compromising of miR-21 and miR-122 sponges as sensor, green fluorescent protein (GFP) as reporter gene and L7Ae:K-turn as regulatory element. The reporter expression was turned up in miR-21 enriched environment while turned down in miR-122 enriched environment, indicating that the reporter switch is able to respond distinctly to different miRNA environment. Furthermore, an AAT promoter, which is hepatocyte-specific, is applied to increase the specificity to hepatocyte. A killing switch with AAT promoter and an apoptosis-inducing element, Bax, in addition to miR-21 and miR-122 significantly inhibited cell viability in Huh-7 by 70 % and in HepG2 by 60 %. By contrast, cell viability was not affected in five non-HCC cells. Thus, we provide a novel feasible strategy to improve the safety of miRNA-based therapeutic agent to cancer.

Metal nitrides (MNs) are attracting enormous attention in the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) because of their rich lattice nitrogen (Nlat) and the unique ability of Nlat vacancies to activate N2. However, continuing controversy exists on whether MNs are catalytically active for NRR or produce NH3 via the reductive decomposition of Nlat without N2 activation in the in situ electrochemical conditions, let alone the rational design of high-performance MN catalysts. Herein, we focus on the common rocksalt-type MN(100) catalysts and establish a quantitative theoretical framework based on the first-principles microkinetic simulations to resolve these puzzles. The results show that the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism is kinetically more favorable to drive the NRR on a majority of MNs, in which Nlat plays a pivotal role in achieving the Volmer process and N2 activation. In terms of stability, activity, and selectivity, we find that MN(100) with moderate formation energy of Nlat vacancy (E vac) can achieve maximum activity and maintain electrochemical stability, while low- or high-E vac ones are either unstable or catalytically less active. Unfortunately, owing to the five-coordinate structural feature of Nlat on rocksalt-type MN(100), this maximum activity is limited to a yield of NH3 of only ∼10-15 mol s-1 cm-2. Intriguingly, we identify a volcano-type activity-regulating role of the local structural features of Nlat and show that the four-coordinate Nlat can exhibit optimal activity and overcome the performance limitation, while less coordinated Nlat fails. This work provides, arguably for the first time, an in-depth theoretical insight into the activity and stability paradox of MNs for NRR and underlines the importance of reaction kinetic assessment in comparison with the prevailing simple thermodynamic analysis.

ABSTRACT

Eosinophils, traditionally associated with allergic phenomena, play a pivotal role in inflammatory responses. Despite accumulating evidence suggesting their pro-inflammatory function upon activation, the underlying mechanisms governing eosinophil activation remain incompletely characterized. In this study, we investigate the local activation of pulmonary and colon eosinophils within the inflammatory microenvironment. Leveraging transcriptional sequencing, we identify TGF-ß as a putative regulator of eosinophil activation, leading to the secretion of granule proteins, including peroxidase. Genetic deletion of TGF-ß receptors on eosinophils resulted in the inhibition of peroxidase synthesis, affirming the significance of TGF-ß signaling in eosinophil activation. Using models of HDM-induced asthma and DSS-induced colitis, we demonstrate the indispensability of TGF-ß-driven eosinophil activation in both disease contexts. Notably, while TGF-ß signaling did not significantly influence asthmatic inflammation, its knockout conferred protection against experimental colitis. This study delineates a distinct pattern of eosinophil activation within inflammatory responses, highlighting the pivotal role of TGF-ß signaling in regulating eosinophil behavior. These findings deepen our comprehension of eosinophil-related pathophysiology and may pave the way for targeted therapeutic approaches in allergic and inflammatory diseases.

ABSTRACT

Given the pivotal role of ß-(het)arylethylamine moiety in bioactive molecules, the direct amino(het)arylation of alkenes occupies a privileged position in the construction of (het)arylethylamine derivatives. Herein we devise chiral sulfoximines as novel bifunctional reagents which exhibit remarkable efficiency in the challenging asymmetric alkene aminohetarylation reaction, particularly in terms of reactivity and stereo-control. The chiral reagents can be conveniently accessed in gram scale, and efficiently generate N-centered radicals under mild photochemical conditions. The transformation proceeds through enantioselective 1,4-hetaryl migration, ensuring precise chirality transfer from sulfur- to carbon-centers, rendering wide applicability to both aromatic and aliphatic alkenes. Furthermore, the method is straightforward to operate and does not require transition metals or photosensitizers, making it an attractive and practical option.

Selecting A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen, China, during the period of 2012-2021 as research subjects, this study examines the relationship and operational mechanisms between executive compensation and corporate ESG Ratings. It is found that executive compensation incentives can significantly enhance corporate ESG Ratings. This effect is achieved through promoting green innovation efficiency, enhancing environmental information disclosure, and improving financial performance. However, this positive impact weakens with an increase in management shareholding, but strengthens with a higher proportion of independent directors. When compensation exceeds appropriate levels, overcompensation leads to a decline in ESG Ratings. The significance of this study lies in revealing potential pathways for enhancing corporate sustainability through executive compensation incentives, while also emphasizing the importance of formulating appropriate compensation strategies.

ABSTRACT

Proliferation and differentiation of intestinal stem cell (ISC) to replace damaged gut mucosal epithelial cells in inflammatory states is a critical step in ameliorating gut inflammation. However, when this disordered proliferation continues, it induces the ISC to enter a cancerous state. The gut microbiota on the free surface of the gut mucosal barrier is able to interact with ISC on a sustained basis. Microbiota metabolites are able to regulate the proliferation of gut stem and progenitor cells through transcription factors, while in steady state, differentiated colonocytes are able to break down such metabolites, thereby protecting stem cells at the gut crypt. In the future, the gut flora and its metabolites mediating the regulation of ISC differentiation will be a potential treatment for enteropathies.

Objective: This is a comprehensive overview of long-term cancer survival in Zhejiang Province, China. Hybrid analysis, a combination of cohort and period analysis, has been proposed to derive up-to-date cancer survival estimates. Using this approach, we aimed to timely and accurately analyze the 5-year relative survival (RS) and net survival (NS) in cancer registries of Zhejiang Province, China. Methods: A total of 255,725 new cancer cases diagnosed during 2013-2017 were included in 14 cancer registries in Zhejiang Province, China, with a follow-up on vital status until the end of 2019. The hybrid analysis was used to calculate the 5-year RS and 5-year NS during 2018-2019 for overall and stratifications by sex, cancer type, region, and age at diagnosis. Results: During 2018-2019, the age-standardized 5-year RS and NS for overall cancer in Zhejiang was 47.5% and 48.6%, respectively. The age-standardized 5-year RS for cancers of women (55.4%) was higher than that of men (40.0%), and the rate of urban areas (49.7%) was higher than that of rural areas (43.1%). The 5-year RS declined along with age, from 84.4% for ages <45 years to 23.7% for ages >74 years. Our results of the RS and NS showed the similar trend and no significant difference. The top five cancers with top age-standardized 5-year RS were thyroid cancer (96.0%), breast cancer (84.3%), testicular cancer (79.9%), prostate cancer (77.2%), and bladder cancer (70.6%), and the five cancers with the lowest age-standardized 5-year RS were pancreatic cancer (6.0%), liver cancer (15.6%), gallbladder cancer (17.1%), esophageal cancer (22.7%), and leukemia (31.0%). Conclusions: We reported the most up-to-date 5-year cancer RS and NS in Zhejiang Province, China for the first time, and found that the 5-year survival for cancer patients in Zhejiang during 2018-2019 was relatively high. The population-based cancer registries are recognized as key policy tools that can be used to evaluate both the impact of cancer prevention strategies and the effectiveness of health systems.

The etiology of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) may be autoimmune. About two-thirds of patients typically experience their first symptoms within 5 days to 3 weeks after common infectious diseases, surgery, or vaccination. Infection is a triggering factor for over 50% of patients. In recent years, a growing number of studies have indicated that some immune checkpoint inhibitors and COVID-19 may also contribute to the occurrence of GBS. However, drugs are considered a rare cause of GBS. The patient in our case was a 70-year-old man who developed GBS after initiating secukinumab for psoriasis. Upon diagnosis suggesting a potential association between secukinumab and the development of GBS, as per the Naranjo adverse drug reaction (ADR) probability scale, we decided to discontinue the drug. Following this intervention, along with the administration of immunoglobulin, the patient exhibited a significant improvement in extremity weakness. The association of GBS with secukinumab treatment, as observed in this case, appears to be uncommon. The underlying mechanisms that may link secukinumab to the development of GBS are not yet fully understood and warrant further scientific inquiry and rigorous investigation. However, we hope that this report can raise greater awareness and vigilance among medical professionals to enhance the safety of patients' medication.

OBJECTIVE: We systematically assessed prediction models for the risk of in-hospital and 30-day mortality in post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) patients. DESIGN: Systematic review and narrative synthesis. DATA SOURCES: Searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, CNKI, Wanfang Database, VIP Database and SinoMed for literature up to 31 August 2023. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The included literature consists of studies in Chinese or English involving PCI patients aged ≥18 years. These studies aim to develop risk prediction models and include designs such as cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies or randomised controlled trials. Each prediction model must contain at least two predictors. Exclusion criteria encompass models that include outcomes other than death post-PCI, literature lacking essential details on study design, model construction and statistical analysis, models based on virtual datasets, and publications such as conference abstracts, grey literature, informal publications, duplicate publications, dissertations, reviews or case reports. We also exclude studies focusing on the localisation applicability of the model or comparative effectiveness. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Two independent teams of researchers developed standardised data extraction forms based on CHecklist for critical Appraisal and data extraction for systematic Reviews of prediction Modelling Studies to extract and cross-verify data. They used Prediction model Risk Of Bias Assessment Tool (PROBAST) to assess the risk of bias and applicability of the model development or validation studies included in this review. RESULTS: This review included 28 studies with 38 prediction models, showing area under the curve values ranging from 0.81 to 0.987. One study had an unclear risk of bias, while 27 studies had a high risk of bias, primarily in the area of statistical analysis. The models constructed in 25 studies lacked clinical applicability, with 21 of these studies including intraoperative or postoperative predictors. CONCLUSION: The development of in-hospital and 30-day mortality prediction models for post-PCI patients is in its early stages. Emphasising clinical applicability and predictive stability is vital. Future research should follow PROBAST's low risk-of-bias guidelines, prioritising external validation for existing models to ensure reliable and widely applicable clinical predictions. ABSTRACT

Allometric rules provide insights into the structure-function relationships across species and scales and are commonly used in ecology. The fields of agronomy, plant phenotyping and modeling also need simplifications such as allometric rules to reconcile data at different temporal and spatial levels (organs/canopy). This paper explores the variations in relationships for wheat regarding (i) the distribution of crop green area between leaves and stems, and (ii) the allocation of above-ground biomass between leaves and stems during the vegetative period, using a large dataset covering different years, countries, genotypes and management practices. Our results show that the relationship between leaf and stem area was linear, genotype-specific, and sensitive to radiation. The relationship between leaf and stem biomass depended on genotype and nitrogen fertilization. The mass per area, associating area and biomass for both leaf and stem, varied strongly by developmental stage and was significantly affected by environment and genotype. These allometric rules were evaluated with satisfactory performance, and their potential use is discussed with regard to current phenotyping techniques and plant/crop models. Our results enable the definition of models and minimum datasets required for characterizing diversity panels and making predictions in various G × E × M contexts.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a novel Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm, namely MFO algorithm enhanced by Multiple Improvement Strategies (MISMFO) is proposed for solving parameter optimization in Multi-Kernel Support Vector Regressor (MKSVR), and the MISMFO-MKSVR model is further employed to deal with the software effort estimation problems. In MISMFO, the logistic chaotic mapping is applied to increase initial population diversity, while the mutation and flame number phased reduction mechanisms are carried out to improve the search efficiency, as well the adaptive weight adjustment mechanism is used to accelerate convergence and balance exploration and exploitation. The MISMFO model is verified on fifteen benchmark functions and CEC 2020 test set. The results show that the MISMFO has advantages over other meta-heuristic algorithms and MFO variants in terms of convergence speed and accuracy. Additionally, the MISMFO-MKSVR model is tested by simulations on five software effort datasets and the results demonstrate that the proposed model has better performance in software effort estimation problem. ABSTRACT

Three rice varieties underwent the field natural extreme high temperature (EHT) with daily average temperature over 30 °C from 21 to 89 days after sowing, and had transparent, chalky and floury grains. The structures, gelatinization properties and enzyme hydrolyses of starches from transparent and floury grains were investigated. Compared with control transparent grains, floury grains subjected to EHT markedly decreased the contents of amylose molecules, amylopectin A chains and amylopectin B1 chains and increased the contents of amylopectin B2 and B3+ chains and the average branch-chain length of amylopectin. Both transparent and floury grains had A-type starches, but floury grain starches exhibited higher relative crystallinity, gelatinization temperature, retrogradation and pasting viscosities than transparent grain starches. Floury grain starches had lower hydrolysis rates than transparent grain starches. Native starches were more resistant to digestion but gelatinized and retrograded starches were more prone to digestion in floury grains than in transparent grains.
