ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Cluttering, a fluency disorder characterized by fast and irregular speech patterns, receives relatively limited research attention. Consequently, the association between cluttering and measures of well-being remains unexplored. In contrast, stuttering, another fluency disorder, has been associated with anxiety and depression. The present study examines whether an individual's experience of cluttering characteristics is related to alterations in both positive and negative measures of well-being. To achieve this, we assessed the relationship between Self-Identified Cluttering Characteristics (SICC) and measures of well-being in a sizeable sample of 1201 university students. Our main objective was to explore the potential impact of self-inefficacy on the association between SICC and well-being. METHODS: Consistent with prior research, participants identified themselves as having cluttering characteristics (SICC) or no-cluttering characteristics (SINCC) based on a verbal and written explanation of the disorder. They also completed questionnaires on psychological well-being indices and self-inefficacy. RESULTS: In total, 276 respondents identified themselves as having cluttering characteristics. In regression models, both SICC and self-inefficacy were predictive of greater negative well-being, increased depressive symptoms, and heightened psychosomatic symptoms. Interestingly, ADHD diagnosis was associated with less negative well-being. Positive well-being indicators (positive future orientation and subjective happiness) were solely predicted by self-inefficacy. Supporting these findings, supplementary regressions including only 56 SICC participants who reported being treated for cluttering yielded similar results. Utilizing Hayes's PROCESS computational procedures to test moderation revealed that self-inefficacy significantly moderated the association between SICC and negative well-being (depressive symptoms) as well as the association between SICC and positive well-being (positive future orientation). CONCLUSIONS: The findings underscore alterations in well-being among individuals who identify themselves as experiencing cluttering characteristics. Primarily, heightened negative well-being was noted in those with SICC, yet individual self-inefficacy reports mitigated this effect. Overall, SICC exacerbates negative well-being rather than diminishing positive well-being. These findings point to the importance of integrating mental health assessment and intervention into clinical practice for individuals with cluttering symptoms and the potential benefits of interventions targeting self-inefficacy to improve overall well-being in this population.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that participating in a stuttering simulation-based learning (SBL) program could help speech-language pathology (SLP) students feel more at ease, less nervous and more capable while interacting with people who stutter. Personality traits may influence SLP students' self-efficacy beliefs as well as their level of interest in working with clients who stutter. In particular, we suggest that the combination of low neuroticism and high extraversion, previously linked with a more outgoing, emotionally stable and social personality, may enhance self-efficacy. AIMS: To examine the impact of participating in a stuttering SBL program on clinical self-efficacy (CSE) in managing stuttering therapy among SLP students, as well as its influence on their interest in working with fluency disorders and their associations with personality dimensions. The study also evaluated satisfaction with the SBL experience. METHODS & PROCEDURES: SLP students (n = 49) underwent a fluency disorders academic course, self-reported on CSE, and had an interest in working in the field of stuttering and NEO-Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). Post-stuttering SBL program participation, CSE and level of interest in practice of stuttering were reassessed. Satisfaction with the simulation was also gauged. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: Students interested in working with fluency disorders scored lower in neuroticism and higher in extraversion than their uninterested counterparts. Before the SBL activity, interest ratings were negatively correlated with neuroticism and positively correlated with extraversion. Pre-SBL neuroticism was negatively correlated with CSE. Following the SBL activity, increased CSE and interest in working with fluency disorders were evident, indicating robust and medium effects of the simulation on those indices, respectively. Post-SBL neuroticism was also negatively correlated with CSE. Overall, participants reported high satisfaction with the SBL experience. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: The study suggests SBL is an effective tool for enhancing motivation to work with fluency disorders. Consideration of personality traits and professional interests in designing educational interventions for SLP students, along with tailoring approaches to individual differences, may enhance learning outcomes. The study also highlights the need to differentiate between CSE and objectively assessed clinical competence and the fact that professional development is influenced by various factors. Nonetheless, the positive correlations between personality traits, CSE and satisfaction emphasize the potential of SBL programs in shaping not only clinical skills but also the attitudes and preferences of future SLPs. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject SLPs in the field of stuttering therapy reportedly experience low levels of comfort and professional confidence, possibly due to insufficient clinical experience. According to earlier research, taking part in SBL programs may elevate the CSE of SLP students and help them feel more confident about treating people with stuttering. What this study adds to the existing knowledge In addition to showing the beneficial effects of an SBL activity on SLP students' self-efficacy and interest in working in stuttering therapy, our research shows a significant relationship between personality traits and CSE. Specifically, the combination of high extraversion and low neuroticism was found to be associated with higher CSE and higher levels of satisfaction from the SBL. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? The study shows that SBL is an effective tool for enhancing motivation to work with fluency disorders. Overall, students who exhibit high extraversion and low neuroticism show higher levels of CSE, greater motivation in stuttering treatment, and higher levels of SBL stratification. Development of future SBL activities and other educational interventions should take into consideration such personality traits, to enhance learning outcomes.

Sense of Coherence (SOC) is conceptualized as promoting resistance to stress. The study aimed to assess the impact of the Big Five personality traits and Social Capital (SC) on SOC levels during COVID-19, comparing associations with the pre-pandemic period. Another aim was to explore how personality and SC relate differently to SOC domains: Comprehensibility, Manageability, and Meaningfulness, reflecting perceptions of order, resource adequacy, and life's significance, respectively. SOC, Big Five personality traits, SC (using by the 13 items SOC scale, NEO-FFI and PSCS inventories, respectively) and demographic data were obtained from 2717 Israeli participants during the heights of the third COVID-19 wave (November 2020-March 2021). Strong relationships between SOC and personality traits have been found through regression analysis, but these associations differed between SOC domains. Big Five traits demonstrated comparable association with Comprehensibly and Manageability, but different from those with Meaningfulness, particularly in Neuroticism, Openness and Extraversion. Significant SC-SOC associations were observed, though weaker than those reported in the pre-pandemic period. Age and female sex were also associated with stronger SOC. Overall, effect sizes for SOC domains were medium to large for Big Five personality traits and small to medium for demographic variables. SC demonstrated a negligible effect size. Significant interactions of demographic, SC and personality traits were also observed. The study highlights SOC's strong links with personality and demographics, but weaker ties with psychosocial factors. Variations across SOC domains may explain diverse crisis effects.

Background: Previous research on autistic students enrolled in university support programs has reported moderate improvement in anxiety/depression or adaptive behavior. However, alterations in autistic traits have not been examined. Methods: This longitudinal study evaluated changes in university students' autistic trait and state/trait anxiety levels. Participants were 24 neurotypically developed (ND) students with high levels of social anxiety symptoms (High SA), 30 ND students with low levels of SA symptoms (Low SA), and 41 autistic students (the primary focus of this study) residing with an ND peer student mentor as part of participating in the university's integration support program. Autism spectrum quotient [AQ and State Trait Anxiety Inventory STAI] data were collected during the first semester of two consecutive academic years (T1, T2), as well as baseline (T1) levels of social anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Results: Significant interaction between group and time was observed, denoting a sharp decrease (2.9 SD) from T1 to T2 in the overall autistic trait level among the autistic group (AQ "attention switching" subscale demonstrating the most robust decrease), and a moderate decrease (0.5 SD) among the high SA group. Only for the autistic students were more compulsive symptoms at T1 associated with a lesser decrease in AQ scores (T1-T2), which in turn was negatively correlated with their T1 year-end grade point average. Conclusion: The findings suggest that attending post-secondary education (while partaking in a support/transition program) is followed by a profound change of the individual's subjective experience of autism, characterized by a sharp decline in the level of autistic traits, particularly attention switching. This change is independent of alterations in well-being indices, such as anxiety, that are known to characterize students attending university.

BACKGROUND: Cluttering is a fluency disorder characterized by an abnormally fast or irregular speech delivery rate along with disfluencies that are frequent but are not judged to be stuttering. Data on cluttering prevalence in the general population are scarce, as well as its association with psychological well-being indices, such as anxiety, and depressive symptoms. AIMS: To estimate cluttering prevalence among undergraduates, as well as its relationship with psychological and well-being indicators. METHODS & PROCEDURES: To address these issues, a large sample (n = 1582) of undergraduates completed a questionnaire that provided a lay definition of cluttering and were asked to identify themselves as clutterers (SI-Clut), as well as to indicate the presence of several psychological and mental well-being indices. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: A total of 276 respondents (23%) self-identified as clutterers (now or in the past), with 55.1% of those being male. Only 56 respondents (3.5% of the total sample; about 21% of SI-Clut) reported having received speech therapy for cluttering. Relative to students self-identifying as non-clutterers, self-identification of cluttering was associated with higher levels of psychosomatic symptoms, depressive symptoms and stress, indicating a tendency toward internalizing psychopathology, along with lower self-esteem, and lower subjective happiness. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: The current findings point to the high prevalence of students self-identifying as clutterers, along with a significant link between cluttering and mental distress. Therefore, it is important to increase public awareness of cluttering, its diagnosis and treatment. From the clinical perspective, the elevated levels of somatic complaints, anxiety and depression may represent internalizing psychopathology, associated with more covert rather than overt symptomatology. Such symptom manifestation calls for special attention from the speech-language pathologists providing cluttering therapy, using designated well-being or mental health screening tools. Although data on standard cluttering treatment are limited, it should be customized to the client's unique difficulties. Speech-language pathologists' understanding of cluttering, which includes both speech characteristics as well as psychological and social aspects of well-being, may assist them in implementing effective treatments. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject Cluttering is a fluency disorder characterized by an abnormally fast or irregular speech rate, along with various disfluencies and articulatory imprecision. It may co-occur with other disorders, such as learning disabilities, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Data on cluttering prevalence and its association with psychological well-being indices, such as anxiety and depression, are limited. What this paper adds to existing knowledge A total of 276 undergraduates (23%) self-identified as clutterers, of whom 55.1% were males. A total of 56 respondents (3.5% of the total sample, and about 21% of undergraduates self-identified as clutterers) reported having received speech therapy for cluttering. Psychosomatic symptoms, depressive symptoms and stress levels were higher among these students, suggesting a tendency toward internalizing psychopathology, along with a lower sense of self-esteem and subjective happiness. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? The high prevalence of students self-identifying as clutterers, along with the low percentage of respondents who received speech therapy for cluttering, emphasize the need to raise public awareness of the problem, its diagnosis and treatment (Reichel et al., 2010). The association between cluttering and mental distress requires speech-language pathologists to be aware that cluttering may have covert symptomatology, similar to stuttering, which should be addressed in therapy.

ABSTRACT

Adjustment to a Chronic Medical Condition (CMC) is associated with developing hypotheses regarding one's symptoms, known as illness cognition (IC). Aging is associated with a higher rate of CMC. We assessed the effects of aging and psychological flexibility (PF)-one's ability to be open to change, and to alter or persist in behaviors according to environmental circumstances - on IC development in CMC. In a cross-sectional study of hospitalized patients with CMC, 192 patients in four age groups: younger (<50), midlife (50-59), young old (60-69), and elderly (≥70) completed questionnaires sampling IC, PF and demographics. Younger participants reported less helplessness (IC) while lower scores in one PF component (perceiving reality as multifaceted) were reported by the elderly (≥70); older age was associated with a more fixed, narrow perception of reality. Both effects remained significant when using the medical condition severity as a covariate. In general, age was positively associated with IC of acceptance and Helplessness. In regression analysis, CMC severity significantly predicted all IC. Moreover, the interaction of age and perceiving reality as dynamic and changing (PF-RDC component) significantly predicted IC- acceptance of illness; follow-up analysis revealed significant correlations between PF-RDC and acceptance only for younger patients (< age 50). PF-RDC also significantly predicted IC - perceived benefit; among the entire sample higher RDC was associated with less IC - perceived benefit. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) research indicates that hyper-reactivity to trauma-related stimuli reflects reduced prefrontal cortex (PFC) modulation of amygdala reactivity. However, other studies indicate a dissociative "shutdown" reaction to overwhelming aversive stimuli, possibly reflecting PFC over-modulation. To explore this, we used an Event-Related Potential (ERP) oddball paradigm to study P3 responses in the presence of the following: 1. Trauma-unrelated morbid distractors (e.g., "injured bear") related to the Rorschach inkblot test, and 2. Negative distractors (e.g., "significant failure"), among participants with high post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTS; n = 20), low PTS (n = 17), and controls (n = 15). Distractors were presented at 20% frequency amongst the more frequent (60%) neutral standard stimuli (e.g., "desk lamp") and the equally frequent (20%) neutral trauma-unrelated target stimulus ("golden fish"). P3 amplitudes were high in the presence of morbid distractors and low in the presence of negative distractors only amongst the control group. Possible mechanisms underlying the lack of P3 amplitude modulation after trauma are discussed.

Objective: Few earthquake survivor studies extend follow-up beyond 2 years, leaving the long-term course of earthquake-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) unknown. This 10-year survey re-assessed the 1999 Izmit, Turkey, earthquake survivors.Methods: Izmit earthquake survivors (N = 198), previously assessed for PTSD/partial PTSD at 1-3 months and 18-20 months post-earthquake, were evaluated 10 years post-event from January 2009 through December 2010. A PTSD self-test (Turkish translation) used DSM-IV criteria to characterize full PTSD, "stringent partial PTSD," "lenient partial PTSD," or non-PTSD based on symptom type/amount.Results: Full PTSD prevalence decreased from 37% at 1-3 months post-earthquake to 15% at 18-20 months (P < .001), remaining relatively stable (12%) at 10 years (P = .38). Stringent and lenient partial PTSD decreased between 1-3 months and 18-20 months (from 9% to 3% and from 24% to 12%, respectively; P < .001), remaining stable at 10 years (5% and 9%, respectively; P = .43 and P = .89). PTSD was more prevalent at 1-3 months among those who had a close acquaintance harmed, had been evacuated for long periods (> 1 week), or had more children; this was not observed at 10 years (P = .007-.017). Avoidance symptoms 1-3 months post-earthquake were the best predictor for full PTSD at 10 years (P < .001). Delayed-onset PTSD was observed in only 2% of participants.Conclusions: Full and partial PTSD decreased over the first 2 years post-trauma, but remained stable at 10 years, suggesting PTSD symptoms at around 2 years remain stable at 10 years. Background characteristics did not predict PTSD long-term course, but avoidance level did. Delayed-onset PTSD was relatively rare.

ABSTRACT

We recently read the interesting and informative paper entitled "Empathic accuracy and cognitive and affective empathy in young adults with and without autism spectrum disorder" (McKenzie et al. in Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 52: 1-15, 2021). This paper expands recent findings from our lab (Ben-David in Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 50: 741-756, 2020a; International Journal of Audiology 60: 319-321, 2020b) and a recent theoretical framework (Icht et al. in Autism Research 14: 1948-1964, 2021) that may suggest a new purview for McKenzie et al.'s results. Namely, these papers suggest that young adults with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability can successfully recruit their cognitive abilities to distinguish between different simple spoken emotions, but may still face difficulties processing complex, subtle emotions. McKenzie et al. (Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 52: 1-15, 2021) extended these findings to the processing of emotions in video clips, with both visual and auditory information.

ABSTRACT

Several factors have been suggested to affect well-being among patients with a Chronic Medical Condition (CMC). Using self-report questionnaires, the effects of Illness Cognitions (IC) and Psychological Flexibility (PF) on well-being (Subjective Happiness) was explored in two groups of patients at a large medical center in Tel Aviv, Israel. This included 79 patients with psoriasis and 71 patients with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), the former representing moderate, and the latter severe, chronic medical conditions. Significant correlations between IC and PF, and well-being, were observed. In regression analyses, helplessness (an IC factor) and perceiving oneself as flexible (a PF factor) significantly contributed to well-being. Perceiving oneself as open and innovative (another PF factor) was associated with higher levels of well-being only among those with ESRD. This suggests that well-being is associated with both a specific cognitive inference regarding one's medical condition (IC) and a general attitude about change (PF). Additionally, it appears that the association between PF and well-being changes across different CMCs, possibly depending on the CMC severity. Theoretical and clinical implications are discussed.

In recent years, more young adults with ASD are attending post-secondary education, and several support programs have been proposed for this population. However, research regarding the long-term effects of university enrollment on outcomes among students with ASD is scarce. This study examined adaptive behavior and psychiatric symptoms during the first semester of two consecutive academic years (T1, T2) among 39 students with ASD, 29 students without ASD and high levels of social anxiety symptoms (High SA), and 32 students without ASD and low levels of SA symptoms (Low SA). Students with ASD participated in a university support program and resided with a peer mentor student without ASD, which encouraged social interaction. At T1, students with ASD reported lower levels of adaptive behavior and higher levels of social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms compared to the other groups. However, at follow-up (T2), significantly higher conceptual adaptive skill levels (specifically communication skills) and significantly lower depression symptom levels from T1 were reported only among students with ASD. The levels of social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms at T1 were negatively associated with adaptive functioning a year later (T2). Implications regarding adults with ASD attending university are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Elevated rates of psychological disorders are reported among those with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Thus, research into factors enhancing psychological aspects of well-being is critical in T2D. We examine the association between a multifaceted measure of Psychological Flexibility (PF), and its relationship to adjustment and well-being, among this population. Adults with T2D (N = 102) completed an online battery of self-reported questionnaires and were asked for demographics, general T2D features, treatment adherence, PF, adjustment, and well-being. We examined the association between PF (Psychological Flexibility Questionnaire, PFQ), adjustment to diabetes (ATT-39) and well-being (Mental Health Inventory), among adults with T2D. Greater PF was significantly associated with greater well-being, but unrelated to adjustment, which was positively associated with well-being. In a hierarchical regression analysis, perception of change as positive (one of the five PFQ factors) significantly contributed to the explained variance in well-being, beyond the contribution of adjustment. These findings indicate that positive perception of change may enhance well-being independently from adjustment to diabetes since these two constructs are distinct and independent. Such an association between PF and well-being may apply to other medical conditions. Implications for psychological intervention are discussed.

Introduction: We examined how community type, residence attachment, and religiosity contribute to resilience to depressive symptoms, psychosomatic complaints, residential stress, and avoidance behavior among students exposed to terror. Methods: Undergraduate students from Ariel University (N = 1,413; 62.7% females; M age = 26.5; SD = 6.03) completed a self-report questionnaire on socio-demographics, terror exposure, place attachment, and depressive/psychosomatic symptoms. Participants were divided into three residential groups: "Ariel," "Small settlement communities in Judea and Samaria" or "Other places in Israel." Results: Participants from small settlement communities in Judea and Samaria showed significantly fewer depressive symptoms and greater adjustment- less avoidance, psychosomatic symptoms, and residential stress- compared to those living in Ariel or other places in Israel, despite significantly higher exposure to terror. Conclusion: Greater religiosity and residence attachment may protect against depressive symptom development following terror exposure. Secular, temporary residents living in highly terror-exposed areas should be targeted for community strengthening interventions.

Daily functioning involves identifying emotions in spoken language, a fundamental aspect of social interactions. To date, there is inconsistent evidence in the literature on whether individuals with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability (ASD-without-ID) experience difficulties in identification of spoken emotions. We conducted a meta-analysis (literature search following the PRISMA guidelines), with 26 data sets (taken from 23 peer-reviewed journal articles) comparing individuals with ASD-without-ID (N = 614) and typically-developed (TD) controls (N = 640), from nine countries and in seven languages (published until February 2020). In our analyses there was no sufficient evidence to suggest that individuals with HF-ASD differ from matched controls in the identification of simple prosodic emotions (e.g., sadness, happiness). However, individuals with ASD-without-ID were found to perform significantly worse than controls in identification of complex prosodic emotions (e.g., envy and boredom). The level of the semantic content of the stimuli presented (e.g., sentences vs. strings of digits) was not found to have an impact on the results. In conclusion, the difference in findings between simple and complex emotions calls for a new-look on emotion processing in ASD-without-ID. Intervention programs may rely on the intact abilities of individuals with ASD-without-ID to process simple emotions and target improved performance with complex emotions. LAY SUMMARY: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability (ASD-without-ID) do not differ from matched controls in the identification of simple prosodic emotions (e.g., sadness, happiness). However, they were found to perform significantly worse than controls in the identification of complex prosodic emotions (e.g., envy, boredom). This was found in a meta-analysis of 26 data sets with 1254 participants from nine countries and in seven languages. Intervention programs may rely on the intact abilities of individuals with ASD-without-ID to process simple emotions.

ABSTRACT

The gap between cognitive ability and adaptive behavior has been thought to enhance psychopathology among people with autism, particularly among those without intellectual disability. We examined this association by exploring the gap between cognitive understanding of social behavior and socially adaptive behavior, and its impact on social anxiety symptoms, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and depressive symptoms, among 53 university students with autism (without intellectual disability). A higher cognition-social adaptation discrepancy was associated with more social anxiety, but this effect was moderated by autistic trait (AT) levels; a greater gap was associated with more avoidance symptoms of social anxiety only among students with high AT. Cognitive flexibility and prosocial behavior may mitigate the effects of AT. Potential implications and interventions are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Identifying emotions in speech is based on the interaction of lexical content and prosody. This may be disrupted in individuals with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HF-ASD). Undergraduates with HF-ASD (n = 20) and matched typically developed peers (n = 20) were tested using the (Hebrew) Test for Rating of Emotions in Speech. Participants rated the degree to which a target-emotion is present in spoken sentences, in which the emotional-lexical and -prosodic content appear in different combinations from trial to trial. No group differences were found in measures of emotion-identification, selective-attention (focusing on one target-channel) and integration. These preserved abilities can partially explain the high levels of independence and self-control characterizing students with HF-ASD. Support programs may rely on such skills to improve social interactions.

ABSTRACT

Fatigue following sleep deprivation adversely affects various aspects of human performance. It also induces recognizable voice changes, but the literature is inconsistent regarding their nature. The current study used acoustical analyses to assess the effect of 24 hours of sleep deprivation on vocal parameters of young adults. Forty-seven participants (23 females and 24 males) were tested after nocturnal sleep and after 24 hours of sleep deprivation. Different voice samples were recorded (sustained phonation, words, and sentences) and analyzed for fundamental frequency (F0, in Hz), vocal intensity (in dB), harmonic-noise ratio (HNR, in dB), jitter, and shimmer (in %). The main finding was significantly higher HNR values following sleep deprivation than nocturnal sleep for females, across all voice samples. The HNR is a measure of the degree of acoustic periodicity, or the amount of noise compared to the harmonic quality present in the voice. As its values are higher, the voice quality is perceptually better. The current results indicate that females had a significantly higher ratio of vocal harmonics compared to vocal noise when they were sleep deprived. In contrast, following nocturnal sleep, the ratio of vocal harmonics compared to vocal noise was lower, which means the voice quality was poorer. This may explain the common perceptual impressions of decreased voice quality after sleep, which may be more pronounced in females.

BACKGROUND: Event-Related Potential (ERP) studies of PTSD have reported enhanced P3 amplitudes in response to trauma-related stimuli that are less likely to habituate over time. METHODS: In the present study, we compared ERPs to the first and last half of an auditory novelty oddball task using neutral (trauma-unrelated) stimuli. Participants were 59 young students who were: trauma-exposed with "Probable PTSD", trauma-exposed without PTSD, or non-traumatized controls. RESULTS: Reduced P3 amplitudes were observed for the last half of the trials for the entire sample, but this habituation was less profound for both trauma-exposed groups, demonstrating reduced habituation over time. Arousal symptom severity and trauma history negatively correlated with P3 amplitude habituation across the entire sample. Reduced N1 amplitudes for the last half of the trials were found in both trauma-exposed groups, but not among controls. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that trauma-exposed individuals exhibit information processing alterations in response to neutral environmental stimuli that may be related to a general pattern of heightened activity of the Salience Network. Implications for the neurobiological model of PTSD and PTSD psychotherapy are discussed.

ABSTRACT

High variability in adaptive behavior in cognitively-able adults with autism spectrum disorder has been previously reported, and may be caused by the high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity in this population. This study's goals were to examine self-reported psychiatric symptoms in students with ASD, and to identify their relative contribution to the variance in adaptive behaviors. The study population included 95 students: 55 diagnosed with ASD (4 females; age range 18-34) who participated in a university integration program (ASD group), and 40 regularly matriculated students (non-ASD group, 7 females; age range 20-36). The ASD group showed a lower adaptive skill level than the non-ASD group as measured by the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (GAC-ABAS). Significantly higher scores for the ASD group were found for social anxiety, trait anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and depression symptoms. The level of adaptive skills correlated negatively and significantly with the severity of social anxiety symptoms in both groups and with severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms only in the ASD group. Additionally, in a regression model, significant contributions of having an ASD diagnosis and severity of social anxiety explained 41.7% of the variance in adaptive skills. Adequate evaluation and treatment, if needed, are recommended in this population.

ABSTRACT

Research findings indicate that anxiety, social anxiety in particular, is the most common experience reported by individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) attending postsecondary education. Among students without ASD, higher levels of social anxiety have been postulated to correlate with impaired academic achievement; restriction of one's social network because of anxiety is thought to lead to reduction of access to resources important for learning such as social/emotional support and collaborative learning. However, despite growing interest in the outcomes of young students with ASD, no research has studied the associations between academic achievement and anxiety among students with ASD. This study examined the association between social anxiety and grade point average (GPA) among university students: 55 diagnosed with ASD, 31 without ASD but high levels of social anxiety, and 25 without ASD and with low levels of social anxiety (controls). GPAs were significantly lower for the ASD group than for the two non-ASD groups. Among students without ASD, a negative correlation between social anxiety and grades was observed whereas the reverse pattern was found for the ASD group, meaning that for students with ASD, higher levels of social anxiety were associated with higher grades. Additionally, in a regression analysis, ASD diagnosis, social anxiety, and the interaction of group × social anxiety significantly predicted GPA. Possible explanations for this finding, as well as implications for interventions among this population of high-functioning students with ASD, are discussed. LAY SUMMARY: This study compared the relationship between levels of social anxiety and grades in students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and in students without ASD who had either high social anxiety or low social anxiety (controls). This finding's implications for interventions among students with ASD are discussed.
