ABSTRACT

This is a multicentre prospective cohort including critically ill children and adolescents, with confirmed critical disease related to SARS-CoV-2, admitted to three tertiary paediatric intensive care units in the Brazilian Amazon, between April 2020 and July 2022. 208 patients were included (median age was 3.5 years). The majority had malnutrition (62%) and comorbidities (60.6%). Mechanical ventilation support, cardiogenic shock and acute respiratory distress syndrome occurred in 47%, 30% and 34.1% of patients, respectively. There were 37 (18%) deaths. A poor outcome of severe COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children was observed in children and adolescents from the Brazilian Amazon.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of different physical therapy protocols on the autonomic modulation of heart rate, time of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), and length of hospital stay. METHODS: This was a randomized clinical study with 20 children on IMV in an intensive care unit (ICU), between July 2018 and September 2019. The control group (n = 10) performed the hospital's physical therapy protocol and the experimental group (n = 10) performed the physical therapy protocol based on physical exercise. RESULTS: Higher values of heart rate variability were found in the experimental group, both in individual and intergroup analyses. There was a significant reduction in the time of IMV and ICU stay. CONCLUSION: There was an improvement in heart rate variability, reduced time on mechanical ventilation and length of stay in the ICU in individuals who performed the study protocol.

ABSTRACT

We described the characteristics of 11 children with pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome-temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2. The main clinical indications for hospital admission were vasogenic toxic shock (n = 2), Kawasaki disease (n = 4), and Kawasaki disease shock syndrome (n = 5). The echocardiography findings were abnormal in 63% of cases. All patients had 2 or more organ dysfunctions, and the mortality rate was 18%.
