ABSTRACT
The advancement of traditional sample preparation techniques has brought about miniaturization systems designed to scale down conventional methods and advocate for environmentally friendly analytical approaches. Although often referred to as green analytical strategies, the effectiveness of these methods is intricately linked to the properties of the sorbent utilized. Moreover, to fully embrace implementing these methods, it is crucial to innovate and develop new sorbent or solid phases that enhance the adaptability of miniaturized techniques across various matrices and analytes. Graphene-based materials exhibit remarkable versatility and modification potential, making them ideal sorbents for miniaturized strategies due to their high surface area and functional groups. Their notable adsorption capability and alignment with green synthesis approaches, such as bio-based graphene materials, enable the use of less sorbent and the creation of biodegradable materials, enhancing their eco-friendly aspects towards green analytical practices. Therefore, this study provides an overview of different types of hybrid graphene-based materials as well as their applications in crucial miniaturized techniques, focusing on offline methodologies such as stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS), pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE), disposable pipette extraction (DPX), dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction (d-µ-SPE), and magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE).
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Anteriorly convex sternum in pectus excavatum, also known as banana sternum (BS), influences decision-making during repair and, especially, the need to cross bars. However, the definition of BS remains subjective. Thus, we aim to propose the retrosternal angle (RSA) as a diagnostic measure for the discrimination of BS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a cohort of patients who underwent a minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) between October 2016 and October 2023 at our Pectus Clinic. Five expert thoracic surgeons individually reviewed their medical photographs and chest CT scans assigning patients to BS or non-BS groups based on consensus (≥4 surgeons). RSA measurements were obtained by an independent thoracic surgeon. RESULTS: Among 283 cases analyzed, 50 (18%) were classified as BS and 233 (82%) as non-BS. No significant differences were found between groups in age (p = 0.62), Haller index (p = 0.11), or Correction index (p = 0.58). However, RSA was significantly lower in the BS group (141.2 ± 8.4° vs. 154.5 ± 10.3°, p < 0.0001). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed RSA as a reliable predictor of BS (AUC 0.85, p < 0.0001), with a threshold of 148.5° demonstrating 80% sensitivity and 77% specificity. Regarding potential clinical implications, 26/50 (52%) of patients defined as BS underwent bar crossing, compared with 45/232 (19%) of those not considered a BS (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: This study proposes an objective metric, the Retrosternal Angle, to assess BS in chest CT scans, with a threshold of 148.5° showing high sensitivity and specificity. External validation of this angle and threshold is warranted in future investigations. TYPE OF STUDY: Retrospective comparative study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.
ABSTRACT
Coffea arabica L. is a crucial crop globally, but its genetic homogeneity leads to its susceptibility to diseases and pests like the coffee berry borer (CBB). Chemical and cultural control methods are difficult due to the majority of the CBB life cycle taking place inside coffee beans. One potential solution is the use of the gene cyt1Aa from Bacillus thuringiensis as a biological insecticide. To validate candidate genes against CBB, a simple, rapid, and efficient transient expression system is necessary. This study uses cell suspensions as a platform for expressing the cyt1Aa gene in the coffee genome (C. arabica L. var. Catuaí) to control CBB. The Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain GV3101::pMP90 containing the bar and cyt1Aa genes are used to genetically transform embryogenic cell suspensions. PCR amplification of the cyt1Aa gene is observed 2, 5, and 7 weeks after infection. This chapter describes a protocol that can be used for the development of resistant varieties against biotic and abiotic stresses and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é apreender os desafios nas vivências dos usuários e profissionais de Banco de Leite Humano no atendimento a homens transgêneros no contexto da amamentação sob à luz da Interseccionalidade. Estudo qualitativo descritivo-exploratório a partir de entrevistas realizadas com seis profissionais do Banco de Leite Humano, que atenderam previamente homens trans no contexto de amamentação, e dois homens trans bissexuais, que amamentaram ao peito. Os dados foram tratados pela Análise Temática com auxílio do software Atlas.ti versão 9.0. Observam-se lacunas nas esferas educacionais, institucionais e na gestão, associadas a questões pessoais e sociais, que reproduzem um modelo pré-concebido normativo, desconsiderando as singularidades requeridas no atendimento à população trans no contexto da amamentação. A cisheteronormatividade e a supremacia do profissional operam em âmbitos pessoais, sociais e institucionais para a segregação de homens transgêneros nos serviços de suporte à amamentação. A análise interseccional destes desafios permite uma visão global dos fatores de segregação e a implementação de políticas públicas promotoras da justiça social.
Abstract This article tried, from an intersectional standpoint, to grasp the challenges experienced by health professionals and service users of human milk banks in provision of care for transgender men chestfeeding. This exploratory, descriptive qualitative study drew on interviews of six human milk bank staff, who had previously assisted trans men in relation to chestfeeding and two bisexual trans men, who chestfed. The data was treated by thematic analysis, supported by Atlas.ti software, version 9.0. Lacunas in the educational, institutional and management spheres, associated with personal and social issues, reproduce a pre-conceived normative model and disregard the special demands of providing chestfeeding care for the trans population. Cisheteronormativity and "professional supremacy" operate in personal, social and institutional respects to segregate transgender men in lactation support services. Intersectional analysis of these challenges affords an overall view of segregative factors and enables public policies to be introduced to promote social justice.

In this work, for the first time, a stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) coupled with thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) was developed and validated for the determination of seven phthalates in Peruvian pisco. The phthalate compounds considered were dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) hexahydrophthalate (BEHP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP) and di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP). The best overall analytical conditions obtained from the optimization were as follow: extraction time of 120 min, size of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) twister (20 mm length x 1 mm thickness), NaCl content (20 %) and sample volume (40 mL). The in-house validation of SBSE/TD-GC-MS method was performed taking into account the ISO/IEC 17,025 requirements and EURACHEM/CITAC guideline. Under optimal conditions, very low limits of detection of 1.3-0.21 µg L-1 were obtained. Furthermore, the limits of quantification ranged from 4.2-70 µg L-1, and the correlation coefficients were found to be ≥ 0.991. The method was precise, with relative standard deviations (RSD, %) for inter twister repeatability and the inter day repeatability precisions from 1.1 to 11 and from 6.2 to 15.9, respectively. The pisco samples were analysed with recoveries between 91-124.4%, and DBP, BEHP, and BBP were the most commonly found compounds in the samples. The optimized methodology was also evaluated in terms of green character, and it obtained almost the best AGREE score when it was compared with other previous methods for the analysis of phthalates in alcoholic beverages. Therefore, the SBSE/TD-GC-MS method has proved to be suitable for routine practice because it is simple, less laborious, economical, precise, accurate and green, and it would be applicable for pisco safety regulations.

Some chemoattractants and leukocytes such as M1 and M2 macrophages are known to be involved in the development of glomerulosclerosis during diabetic nephropathy (DN). In the course of diabetes, an altered and defective cellular metabolism leads to the increase in adenosine levels, and thus to changes in the polarity (M1/M2) of macrophages. MRS1754, a selective antagonist of the A2B adenosine receptor (A2BAR), attenuated glomerulosclerosis and decreased macrophage-myofibroblast transition in DN rats. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effect of MRS1754 on the glomerular expression/secretion of chemoattractants, the intraglomerular infiltration of leukocytes, and macrophage polarity in DN rats. Kidneys/glomeruli of non-diabetic, DN, and MRS1754-treated DN rats were processed for transcriptomic analysis, immunohistopathology, ELISA, and in vitro macrophage migration assays. The transcriptomic analysis identified an upregulation of transcripts and pathways related to the immune system in the glomeruli of DN rats, which was attenuated using MRS1754. The antagonism of the A2BAR decreased glomerular expression/secretion of chemoattractants (CCL2, CCL3, CCL6, and CCL21), the infiltration of macrophages, and their polarization to M2 in DN rats. The in vitro macrophages migration induced by conditioned-medium of DN glomeruli was significantly decreased using neutralizing antibodies against CCL2, CCL3, and CCL21. We concluded that the pharmacological blockade of the A2BAR decreases the transcriptional expression of genes/pathways related to the immune response, protein expression/secretion of chemoattractants, as well as the infiltration of macrophages and their polarization toward the M2 phenotype in the glomeruli of DN rats, suggesting a new mechanism implicated in the antifibrotic effect of MRS1754.

The transverse tensile strength of a naturally fallen red deer antler (Cervus Elaphus) was determined through indirect Brazilian tests using dry disc-shape specimens at quasi-static and high strain rates. Dynamic Brazilian tests were performed in a compression Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar. Quasi-static tensile and indirect Brazilian tests were also performed along the osteon growth direction for comparison. The quasi-static transverse tensile strength ranged 31.5-44.5 MPa. The strength increased to 83 MPa on the average in the dynamic Brazilian tests, proving a rate sensitive transverse strength. The quasi-static tensile strength in the osteon growth direction was however found comparably higher, 192 MPa. A Weibull analysis indicated a higher tensile ductility in the osteon growth direction than in the transverse to the osteon growth direction. The microscopic analysis of the quasi-static Brazilian test specimens (tensile strain along the osteon growth direction) revealed a micro-cracking mechanism operating by the crack deflection/twisting at the lacunae in the concentric lamellae region and at the interface between concentric lamellae and interstitial lamellae. On the other side, the specimens in the transverse direction fractured in a more brittle manner by the separation/delamination of the concentric lamellae and pulling of the interstitial lamellae. The detected increase in the transverse strength in the high strain rate tests was further ascribed to the pull and fracture of the visco-plastic collagen fibers in the interstitial lamellae. This was also confirmed microscopically; the dynamically tested specimens exhibited flatter fracture surfaces.

Broken rotor bars in induction motors make up one of the typical fault types that are challenging to detect. This type of damage can provoke adverse effects on the motors, such as mechanical and electrical stresses, together with an increase in electricity consumption, causing higher operative costs and losses related to the maintenance times or even the motor replacement if the damage has led to a complete failure. To prevent such situations, diverse signal processing algorithms have been applied to incipient fault detection, using different variables to analyze, such as vibrations, current, or flux. To counteract the broken rotor bar damage, this paper focuses on a motor current signal analysis for early broken bar detection and classification by using the digital Taylor-Fourier transform (DTFT), whose implementation allows fine filtering and amplitude estimation with the final purpose of achieving an incipient fault detection. The detection is based on an analysis of variance followed by a Tukey test of the estimated amplitude. The proposed methodology is implemented in Matlab using the O-splines of the DTFT to reduce the computational load compared with other methods. The analysis is focused on groups of 50-test of current signals corresponding to different damage levels for a motor operating at 50% and 75% of its full load.
ABSTRACT
The treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) consists of pharmacotherapy and neurosurgical procedure, such as percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy. Here, we present the case of a patient with TN refractory to clinical treatment who presented an anatomical variation in the oval foramen, which required stereotactic-guided surgery to access the Gasser ganglion. This is a 63-year-old male patient who presented with TN refractory to drug treatment. He used carbamazepine and nortriptyline, with no satisfactory response. The percutaneous approach to radiofrequency thermocoagulation was indicated, in view of the comorbidities presented and the patient's age. Due to the presence of a rare anatomical variation, stereotactic-guided surgery was used to cannulate the foramen ovale and, thus, successfully perform the neurosurgical procedure with an excellent clinical response. The use of stereotaxy to guide cannulation of the foramen ovale due to anatomical variation was essential for the success of the procedure. The knowledge of the existence of this anatomical variation, and the mastery of the stereotactic technique enabled the adequate management in the face of the unusual situation.
O tratamento da neuralgia do trigêmeo (NT) consta de farmacoterapia e procedimento neurocirúrgicos, como a rizotomia percutânea por radiofrequência. Aqui apresentamos o caso de um paciente com NT refratária ao tratamento clínico que apresentava uma variação anatômica no forame oval, o que exigiu a realização de cirurgia guiada por estereotaxia para acesso ao gânglio de Gasser. Trata-se de um paciente do sexo masculino, com 63 anos de idade, que apresentava quadro de NT refratária ao tratamento medicamentoso. Fez uso de carbamazepina e nortriptilina, sem resposta satisfatória. Foi indicada a abordagem percutânea para termocoagulacão por radiofrequência, tendo em vista comorbidades apresentadas e a idade do paciente. Devido à presença de uma rara variação anatômica, utilizou-se a cirurgia guiada por estereotaxia para canular o forame oval, e, dessa forma, realizar o procedimento neurocirúrgico com sucesso e uma excelente resposta clínica. A utilização de estereotaxia para guiar a canulação do forame oval devido à variação anatômica foi essencial para o sucesso do procedimento. O conhecimento da existência dessa variação anatômica, e o domínio da técnica estereotáxica possibilitaram o adequado manejo frente a uma situação incomum.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the proximal chemical composition, antioxidant activity assays with total phenol, 2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl, 2'2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt, iron reducing antioxidant power, and the fatty acid composition of fermented and dried cocoa beans, roasted cocoa beans and cocoa pulp bar. The fermented and dried cocoa beans were purchased, roasted (115 °C for 5 min) and homogenized. The mixture was brought to its melting point (58 °C for 5 min). In the cocoa pulp bar there was an increase in lipids (53.0%). The roasted affected the concentration of ashes (3.38-2.98%). Total phenol (1.8, 1.5 and 1.3 mg AEG kg-1), 2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl (65.8, 64.4 and 65.0 μmol ET kg-1), 2'2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (3.60, 3.00 and 2.30 μmol EAC kg-1) and iron reducing antioxidant power (0.09, 0.07 and 0.06 mg Fe2+ kg-1) presented significant differences (p<0.05) in the fermented and dried cocoa beans, roasted cocoa beans and cocoa pulp bar respectively, however, the changes were minimal. The cocoa pulp bar had a higher concentration of unsaturated fatty acid (89.2%), where oleic (48.6%) was predominated. Therefore, the cocoa pulp bar is a food with an important antioxidant content, moreover, it has a higher concentration of unsaturated fatty acid, which is desirable in the diet.
RESUMEN El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la composición química proximal, el contenido de antioxidantes con los ensayos de fenoles totales, 2,2-Difenil-1-Picrilhidrazil, Ácido 2'2-azino-bis (3-etilbenzotiazolin-6-sulfónico), sal de diamonio y poder antioxidante reductor del hierro, y la composición de ácidos grasos en los granos de cacao fermentados y secos, granos de cacao tostados y barra de pulpa de cacao. Se compraron los granos de cacao fermentado y seco y se tostaron (115 °C durante 5 min), y se homogeneizaron. La mezcla se llevó a su punto de fusión (58 °C durante 5 min). En la barra de pulpa de cacao hubo un aumento de lípidos (53,0%). El tostado afectó la concentración de cenizas (3,38 - 2,98%). En los resultados de fenoles totales (1,80, 1,50 y 1,30 mg AEG kg-1), 2,2-Difenil-1-Picrilhidrazil (65,8, 64,4 y 65,0 μmol ET kg-1), Ácido 2'2-azino-bis (3-etilbenzotiazolin-6-sulfónico), sal de diamonio (3,6, 3,0 y 2,3 μmol EAC kg-1) y poder antioxidante reductor del hierro (0.09, 0.07 y 0.06 mg Fe2+ kg-1) presentaron diferencias significativas (p<0.05) en los granos de cacao fermentados y secos, granos de cacao tostados y barra de pulpa de cacao respectivamente, sin embargo, los cambios fueron mínimos. La barra de pulpa de cacao presentó una mayor concentración de ácidos grasos insaturados (89%), donde predominó el oleico (48,6%). Por lo tanto, la barra de pulpa de cacao es un alimento con importante contenido en antioxidantes, además, tiene una mayor concentración de ácidos grasos insaturados, lo que es deseable en la dieta.
ABSTRACT
The bacterial microbiota of the mosquito influences numerous physiological processes of the host. As low-microbial-biomass ecosystems, mosquito tissues are prone to contamination from the laboratory environment and from reagents commonly used to isolate DNA from tissue samples. In this report, we analyzed nine 16S rRNA data sets, including new data obtained by us, to gain insight into the impact of potential contaminating sequences on the composition, diversity, and structure of the mosquito tissue microbial community. Using a clustering-free approach based on the relative abundance of amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) in tissue samples and negative controls, we identified candidate contaminating sequences that sometimes differed from, but were consistent with, results found using established methodologies. Some putative contaminating sequences belong to bacterial taxa previously identified as contaminants that are commonly found in metagenomic studies but that have also been identified as part of the mosquito core microbiota, with putative physiological relevance for the host. Using different relative abundance cutoffs, we show that contaminating sequences have a significant impact on tissue microbiota diversity and structure analysis. IMPORTANCE The study of tissue-associated microbiota from mosquitoes (primarily from the gut) has grown significantly in the last several years. Mosquito tissue samples represent a challenge for researchers given their low microbial biomass and similar taxonomic composition commonly found in the laboratory environment and in molecular reagents. Using new and published data sets that identified mosquito tissue microbiota from gut and reproductive tract tissues (and their respective negative controls), we developed a simple method to identify contamination microbiota. This approach uses an initial taxonomic identification without operational taxonomic unit (OTU) clustering and evaluates the relative abundance of control sample sequences, allowing the identification and removal of purported contaminating sequences in data sets obtained from low-microbial-biomass samples. While it was exemplified with the analysis of tissue microbiota from mosquitos, it can be extended to other data sets dealing with similar technical artifacts.

OBJECTIVE: Compare maxillary anterior dentition measurements, using Chu's proportion gauge with a T-bar tip (PG-TT) and a Two-Tip Compass (T-TC), in a group of Puerto Ricans, to determine the reliability of the PG-TT. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Puerto Rico, School of Dental Medicine, Medical Sciences Campus. The participants (18-35 years old) were dental students or employees of the university. Previously, the examiner had been trained and calibrated in instrument usage. Calibration participants (n = 16) received an oral exam, prophylaxis, and a chlorhexidine mouthwash for home use. After 3 days, the upper-anterior teeth were measured using the 2 instruments. The agreement was determined using weighted kappa statistics (Kw), and 0.80 was the minimum acceptable level. The examiner achieved almost perfect agreement (inter-examiner KwT-TC = 0.95 [0.96-0.93]; KwPG-TT = 0.82 [0.81-0.87]) with a reference examiner. RESULTS: Fifty participants (25 women and 25 men) were evaluated. Length: The teeth of the men presented an unacceptable level of agreement, except for in the right central incisors. For the women, a strong level of agreement was observed only in the lateral incisors and left canines. When the teeth of both sexes were considered, a strong level of agreement was detected, except for in the right canines and left central incisors. Width: The level of agreement was unacceptable, except for in the right canines (distal). CONCLUSION: T-TC is a more reliable instrument to measure tooth dimensions as compared to the PG-TT.

Abstract There has been a heated debate on emotional intelligence (EI) and, more particularly, on the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) measuring all dimensions of emotional intelligence. To ensure measurement equivalence of EQ-i, the present article evaluated whether statements phrased in EQ-i questionnaire have equivalent meaning across respondents, regardless of their sex and age group membership. For 2,078 participants, three EI subscale (item 50 in reality testing, items 4 and 19 in stress tolerance, and items 7, 52, and 82 in interpersonal) for age groups had clinically significant Differential item functioning (DIF). So previous observed associations between EI and age might be misleading and deserve further study after removing or replacing DIF items.
Resumen En medio del acalorado debate sobre la Inteligencia Emocional, este estudio retoma el Inventario de Cociente Emocional Bar-On (EQ-i), que mide todas las dimensiones de este constructo psicológico. Con el fin de comprobar la equivalencia de medición de EQ-i, se comprueba si las declaraciones formuladas en el cuestionario EQ-i tienen un significado equivalente entre los encuestados, independientemente de su sexo y grupo de edad. Se aplicó a los 2078 participantes las tres subescalas de IE. Se halló un funcionamiento diferencial de los ítems (DIF) clínicamente significativo. Por lo tanto, las asociaciones observadas anteriormente entre la IE y la edad pueden ser espurias y merecen un estudio adicional después de eliminar o reemplazar los elementos DIF.

Abstract Objective: This study investigated stress and performance levels in candidates for the Brazilian Bar Association examination (Exame da Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil) in Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. Methods: The following instruments were used: A sociodemographic data sheet, Lipp's Stress Symptom Inventory for Adults, the Ways of Coping Scale, the Adult Self-Report Scale, and the Self-Report Questionnaire. The final sample comprised 117 candidates, aged from 18 to 59 years (mean = 29.7, standard deviation = 7.8), 76 women (65%) and 41 men (35%). Results: In the first phase of the examination, 67 candidates were approved (57.3%), but there was no significant difference in terms of stress: stress symptoms were present in 76.1% of the successful candidates and 62% of the unsuccessful candidates; (χ2 (1) = 2.09; p = 0.148). In terms of stress phases, 70.6% of the successful candidates (n = 36) were in the resistance phase and 78.4% of these had psychological symptoms. The mean age of successful candidates (28.2 years) was lower than that of unsuccessful candidates (31.7 years); (t (115) = −2.48; p = 0.015). Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms were detected in 18 successful candidates (26.9%) and 6 unsuccessful candidates (12.2%); (χ2 (1) = 2.85; p = 0.091). Conclusions: Candidates who were successful in the first phase of the Brazilian Bar Association examination tended to be younger and scored higher for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms, but their stress levels did not differ from those of unsuccessful candidates.

Resumen Una de las dificultades encontradas es la correcta identificación de insectos asociados a la descomposición cadavérica, por la cual ha llevado a buscar y generar nuevas herramientas en biología molecular que facilitan la determinación de especímenes para la estimación del Intervalo Post-Mortem de una forma efectiva y certera a partir de estadios inmaduros; la colecta y taxonomía morfológica de Dípteros se realizaron en primera instancia y posteriormente se utilizó el sistema de Códigos de Barras (COI Barcode) para la identificación molecular de insectos problema por medio del gen mitocondrial COI en cualquier fase del ciclo biológico. Identificando tres especies de adultos con una probabilidad de correspondencia del 100%; los especímenes: Sarconesia versicolor de la Familia Calliphoridae y Fannia sp., no fueron hallados en las bases de datos mundiales del GenBank y del Boldsystems, siendo necesario su actualización realizando patrones de sucesión cronológica de fauna cadavérica en diferentes zonas geográficas, cuya práctica se aplicaría en las investigaciones criminales.
Abstract One of the difficulties encountered is the correct identification of insects associated with cadaveric decomposition, which has led to the search and generation of new tools in molecular biology that facilitate the determination of specificities for the modification of the Post-Mortem Interval in an effective and accurate from immature stages; the collection and morphological taxonomy of Diptera were made in the first instance and then the Bar Code System (COI Barcode) was used for the molecular identification of problem insects by means of the mitochondrial COI gene in any phase of the biological cycle. Identifying three species of adults with a probability of 100% correspondence; the specimens: Sarconesia versicolor of the Calliphoridae Family and Fannia sp., were not found in the world databases of the GenBank and the Boldsystems, being necessary to update them by chronological succession patterns of cadaveric fauna in different geographical areas, whose practice would be applied in criminal investigations.

This study reports a novel and environmentally friendly method based on bar adsorptive microextraction (BAµE) with cork pellet as extraction phase for the determination of methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben in river water samples. This natural approach consists of a cork pellet recycled from wine stoppers used as biosorbent material to replace the traditional BAµE device. The analytical determinations were performed using a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). Parameters such as type of desorption solvent, desorption and extraction time, sample pH and ionic strength were carefully optimized through univariate and multivariate approaches. Cork pellets of 15 mm length were inserted into vials containing 15 mL of water sample adjusted at pH 3 and 25% (w/v) of NaCl. The extraction step was carried out under agitation for 45 min followed by liquid desorption with 120 µL of methanol:acetonitrile (1:1 v/v) for 30 min. Satisfactory analytical performance was obtained with coefficients of determination ranging from 0.9921 for methylparaben to 0.9994 for propylparaben; intraday precision ranged from 6.7 to 18.3%, and interday precision varied from 7.2 to 20.0%. Accuracy was assessed through relative recovery assays and varied from 53 to 124%.
ABSTRACT
The development of non-invasive screening techniques for early cancer detection is one of the greatest scientific challenges of the 21st century. One promising emerging method is the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are low molecular weight substances generated as final products of cellular metabolism and emitted through a variety of biological matrices, such as breath, blood, saliva and urine. Urine stands out for its non-invasive nature, availability in large volumes, and the high concentration of VOCs in the kidneys. This review provides an overview of the available data on urinary VOCs that have been investigated in cancer-focused clinical studies using mass spectrometric (MS) techniques. A literature search was conducted in ScienceDirect, Pubmed and Web of Science, using the keywords "Urinary VOCs", "VOCs biomarkers" and "Volatile cancer biomarkers" in combination with the term "Mass spectrometry". Only studies in English published between January 2011 and May 2020 were selected. The three most evaluated types of cancers in the reviewed studies were lung, breast and prostate, and the most frequently identified urinary VOC biomarkers were hexanal, dimethyl disulfide and phenol; with the latter seeming to be closely related to breast cancer. Additionally, the challenges of analyzing urinary VOCs using MS-based techniques and translation to clinical utility are discussed. The outcome of this review may provide valuable information to future studies regarding cancer urinary VOCs.

Its diagnosis is tricky owing to its confusing morphology, as well as practical and technical issues associated with mycological tests. Dermoscopy has now evolved as a novel diagnostic tool for diagnosing tinea incognito in such challenging situations, since the typical hair changes such as Morse-code hairs, deformable hairs, translucent hairs, comma and cork screw hairs, and perifollicular scaling may be seen despite steroid use, irrespective of mycological results.

Resumo Este artigo objetivou analisar o contexto social associado ao lazer nos jogos do Clube Atlético Mineiro e do Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, em bares de Montes Claros (MG), em 2016/17, com o uso de observação e aplicação de questionário semiestruturado. As análises convergiram em direção aos estudos de Gastaldo (2005a, 2005b), em Porto Alegre; Azevedo e Santos (2008) e Barral (2012), em Brasília; Origuela e Silva (2013) e Origuela (2014), em Piracicaba; e Abrantes (2015), em Belo Horizonte. Apesar da distância, a assistência aos jogos foi similar. Em Montes Claros, reduto de atleticanos e cruzeirenses, o bar assemelha-se a um estádio, torna-se um local de lazer da cidade.
Abstract This article aimed to analyze the social context associated with leisure in the matches of Clube Atlético Mineiro and Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, in bars of Montes Claros-MG, in the years 2016/17, using observation and application of semi-structured questionnaire. The analyzes converged towards the studies of Gastaldo (2005a, 2005b), in Porto Alegre; Azevedo and Santos (2008) and Barral (2012), in Brasília; Origuela and Silva (2013) and Origuela (2014), in Piracicaba; and Abrantes (2015), in Belo Horizonte. Despite the distance, the attendance at matches was similar. In Montes Claros, a stronghold of fans of both clubs, the bar resembles a stadium, becoming a place of leisure of the city.
Resumen El objetivo de este artículo fue analizar el contexto social asociado con el ocio en los partidos del Club Atlético Mineiro y del Cruzeiro Esporte Clube en bares de Montes Claros-MG, en los años 2016 y 2017, utilizando la observación y la aplicación del cuestionario semiestructurado. Los análisis convergieron hacia los estudios de Gastaldo (2005a, 2005b) en Porto Alegre; Azevedo y Santos (2008) y Barral (2012) en Brasilia; Origuela y Silva (2013), y Origuela (2014) en Piracicaba, y Abrantes (2015) en Belo Horizonte. A pesar de la distancia, la asistencia a los partidos fue similar. En Montes Claros, bastión de los hinchas de los dos clubes, el bar se parece a un estadio, pues se convierte en un lugar de ocio de la ciudad.
