ABSTRACT

The peel represents a significant portion of the araticum fruit (about 40%), which becomes waste after its consumption or processing. Previous studies have shown that the araticum peel is rich in phenolic compounds; however, little is known about the ideal conditions for recovering these compounds. Therefore, response surface methodology, using a central composite rotatable design, was employed to optimize the extraction process to maximize the total phenolic compounds (TPCs) and enhance the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) from araticum peel. The variables optimized were ethanol concentration (EC; 20-80%, v/v), extraction time (ET; 5-45 min), and solid-solvent ratio (SSR; 10-100 mg/mL). Additionally, condensed tannins, antioxidant capacity against synthetic free radicals (TEAC and FRAP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the phenolic compounds profile, were evaluated. Optimum extraction conditions were 50% (v/v) ethanol concentration, 5 min of extraction time, and 10 mg/mL solid-solvent ratio. Under these conditions, experimental TPCs and TEAC values were 70.16 mg GAE/g dw and 667.22 µmol TE/g dw, respectively, comparable with predicted models (68.47 mg GAE/g dw for TPCs and 677.04 µmol TE/g dw for TEAC). A high condensed tannins content (76.49 mg CE/g dw) was also observed and 12 phenolic compounds were identified, predominantly flavonoids (97.77%), including procyanidin B2, epicatechin, and catechin as the major compounds. Moreover, a potent antioxidant activity was observed against synthetic free radicals and ROS, especially in scavenging peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals. From this study, we obtained the ideal conditions for recovering phenolic compounds from araticum peel using a simple, fast, sustainable, and effective method, offering a promising opportunity for the management of this plant byproduct.

ABSTRACT

Jatobá-do-cerrado fruit shells, archetypical of lignocellulosic-based biomass, were used as an adsorbent to remove crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) from water. The adsorbent was characterized using various techniques, and kinetic studies showed dye adsorption followed second-order kinetics. An experimental design investigated the effects of pH and temperature on removal efficiency, with a quadratic model fitting the data best. The results suggest pH influences MB's adsorption capacity more than temperature and at 25 °C and pH 8, MB had a desirability value of 0.89, with 95 % removal efficiency. For CV, temperature had a greater influence, with a desirability value of 0.874 at 25 °C and pH 10, and 95 % removal efficiency. Adsorption isotherm studies revealed maximum adsorption capacities of 123.0 mg·g-1 and 113.0 mg·g-1 for CV and MB, respectively. Experimental thermodynamic parameters indicated an endothermic and spontaneous process which it was supported by quantum chemistry calculations. The protocols developed confirmed the potential for adsorbing CV and MB dyes in water, achieving over 73.1 and 74.4 mg g-1 dyes removal.

ABSTRACT

Araticum is a native species of the Brazilian Cerrado with a high potential for exploitation. Several studies have stated that araticum is a rich source of phytochemicals with multifaceted biological actions. However, little information is available regarding the characterization of phytochemicals found in the pulp of this fruit. In this context, this study aimed to carry out a comprehensive characterization of phytochemicals present in the araticum pulp using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS). The antioxidant potential of araticum pulp was also evaluated. UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS profiling of the phytochemicals allowed for the identification and annotation of 139 phytochemicals, including organic acids, jasmonates, iridoids, phenolic compounds, alkaloids, annonaceous acetogenins, fatty acid derivatives, and other compounds. Among them, 116 compounds have been found for the first time in araticum pulp. Phenolic compounds and their derivatives represented about 59% of the phytochemicals identified in the extract. Moreover, araticum pulp showed high total phenolic compound content and antioxidant activity. The majority of identified phytochemicals have been associated with key roles in the plant's defense mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stress factors in the Cerrado environment. Furthermore, many of these phytochemicals found in the araticum pulp are already widely recognized for their beneficial effects on human health. Our findings showed that the araticum fruit contains different classes of phytochemicals that exert various biological activities, both in the plant itself and in humans.

ABSTRACT

Fruit-based beverages have been considered excellent food vehicles for delivering prebiotics. However, the conventional thermal processes currently used to microbiologically and enzymatically stabilize these products may cause significant losses in their sensory, physicochemical, nutritional, and bioactive characteristics. Thus, in this study, we evaluate the effect of different levels of pressure (8, 15, and 21 MPa) and temperature (35 and 55 °C) on the characteristics of an inulin-enriched araticum beverage processed with non-thermal supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) technology. The temperature showed a significant effect on total soluble solids, pH, particle size distribution, and kinetic stability. In contrast, pressure affected only the particle size distribution. The interaction between pressure and temperature influenced the total soluble solids, pH, and particle size distribution. Color parameters, ζ-potential, and glucose and fructose contents were not modified after all SC-CO2 treatments. Moreover, the SC-CO2 treatments preserved the inulin molecular structure, thus maintaining its prebiotic functionality. Overall, the SC-CO2 treatment did not alter the sensory, nutritional, and functional quality of the beverage, while improving its physical stability during storage. Therefore, non-thermal SC-CO2 treatment can be an alternative to current conventional processes for stabilizing inulin-enriched fruit-based beverages.

ABSTRACT

Araticum (Annona crassiflora Mart.) is a native and endemic species to Brazilian Cerrado whose fruits have high sensorial, nutritional, bioactive, and economic potential. Its use in local folk medicine, associated with recent scientific findings, has attracted growing interest from different industrial sectors. Therefore, understanding the scientific advances achieved so far and identifying gaps to be filled is essential to direct future studies and transform accumulated knowledge into innovative technologies and products. In this review, we summarize the phytochemical composition, bioactivities, and food products from araticum fruit that have been reported in the scientific literature over the past 10 years. The compiled data showed that araticum fruit parts contain a wide range of bioactive compounds, particularly phenolic compounds, alkaloids, annonaceous acetogenins, carotenoids, phytosterols, and tocols. These phytochemicals contribute to different biological activities verified in araticum fruit extracts/fractions, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-Alzheimer, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, antidyslipidemic, antinociceptive, hepatoprotective, healing of the cutaneous wound, antibacterial, and insecticide effects. Despite the promising findings, further studies-particularly toxicological (especially, with byproducts), pre-clinical, and clinical trials-must be conducted to confirm these biological effects in humans and assure the safety and well-being of consumers.

Araticum is an exotic fruit with unique sensory features and also high nutritional value characteristics. This study aimed to develop araticum jams with substitution of commercial pectin for passion fruit albedo, as well as to evaluate its physical, microbiological and sensorial stability during storage in polyethylene and polypropylene packages. Samples were analyzed at 25 and 35 °C for 130 days. During the storage the values of pH (3.5-4.9), titratable acidity (0.27-0.62%), color (L* 20.56-28.49, a* 1.32-7.03, and b* 1.32-9.29), chroma (1.86-11.65), hue (0.60-1.03), soluble solids (68-79.70 ºBrix), reducing sugars (12.60-60.30%), non-reducing sugars (6.22-56.19%), total sugars (55.30-96.30%), and carotenoids (0.21-1.27 mg.100 g-1) varied. The indicated shelf life was approximately 117 and 65 days for jams in polypropylene package, and 112 and 63 days for those kept in the polyethylene package, when the temperature of storage was 25 and 35 ºC, respectively. Araticum fruit is a good source for jams, that can contribute to the increased insertion of foods of better nutritional value in the consumer market.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to produce vinegar from mangaba pulp using semi-solid alcoholic fermentation combined with the enzymatic activity of pectinase and to investigate the chemical composition and sensory characteristics of the final product. was evaluated for volatile acidity and the reduced dry extract was evaluated for ashes, alcohol content, sulfates, pH, total phenolic compounds, total carotenoids, color parameters, yield, productivity, and sensory analysis. Average and standard deviation was used for descriptive statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to all variables except total carotenoid content. Physicochemical characterization of the raw and alcoholically fermented pulp was also carried out. The main results showed that, in the vinegar, the reduced dry extract, volatile acidity, pH, and ashes were 44.3±1.5 (g/L), 4.4±0.1 (% w/v), 3.1±0.0, and 3.0±0.41 (g/L), respectively. The total phenolic compound content and total carotenoid content for the mangaba vinegar were 19.2±8.20. mg/100 g and 2.6±0.6. mg/100 g, respectively. The conversion yield from ethanol to acetic acid was 90%. PCA showed that pH and volatile acidity had a strong influence on the product, and there was a strong positive correlation between color and aroma. The final product met all legal requirements, showing that it is possible to produce mangaba vinegar with antioxidant potential for consumers. In the sensory evaluation, it was favored by the tasters, demonstrating potential economic value in the Cerrado fruit.


RESUMO: Objetivou-se produzir vinagre, a partir da polpa de mangaba por fermentação alcoólica semi-sólida com ação enzimática através da pectinase, investigar a composição química e avaliação sensorial do produto final. O vinagre foi avaliado através da acidez volátil, extrato seco reduzido, cinzas, teor alcoólico, sulfatos, pH, compostos fenólicos totais, carotenoides totais, parâmetros de cor, rendimento, produtividade e análise sensorial. Os dados foram submetidos a estatística descritiva com média e desvio padrão. Foi aplicado a análise de componentes principais (ACP) para todas as variáveis, exceto para análise de carotenoides totais. Também foi realizada a caracterização físico-química da polpa e fermentado alcoólico. Os principais resultados mostraram que, no vinagre, extrato seco reduzido, acidez volátil, pH e cinzas foram, respectivamente, 44,3±1,5 (g/L), 4,4±0,1 (% m/v), 3,1±0,0, 3,0±0,41 (g/L). Os compostos fenólicos totais e carotenoides totais apresentaram valores de 19,2±8,20 (mg/100 g) e 2,6±0,6 (mg/100 g), respectivamente. O rendimento de conversão de etanol a ácido acético foi de 90%. ACP foi aplicada nas variáveis físico-químicas do vinagre no qual os parâmetros de cor, pH e acidez volátil apresentaram forte influência no produto e, para os atributos da análise sensorial, cor e aroma apresentaram uma forte correlação positiva entre si. O produto final atendeu a todos os quesitos legais, demonstrando ser possível a produção de vinagre de mangaba com potencial antioxidante. Na avaliação sensorial teve boa aceitação pelos provadores, valorizando o uso deste fruto do Cerrado.

ABSTRACT

Araticum (Annona crassiflora Mart.) is a fruitful tree native to the Brazilian Cerrado biome that holds high nutritional, functional and economic potential. This plant has been used since ancient times by folk medicine for the treatment of several pathological conditions. There has been increasing interest in the development of pulp-based food products as well as the by-products utilization to obtain value-added ingredients. Understanding the chemical composition and biological activities of different botanical parts of Annona crassiflora Mart. provides a basis to support future researches and applications. In this context, this paper carries out an exhaustive review of the scientific literature, on the main phytochemicals of different botanical parts of Annona crassiflora Mart. (fruit, leaves, stem and root) and their biological activities, assessing their potential uses for several industrial segments. Annona crassiflora Mart. fruits and especially their by-products (peel and seeds) and leaves have been shown a wide range of bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds, alkaloids, annonaceous acetogenins, tocols, carotenoids, phytosterols, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and essential oils. These compounds contribute to various biological activities, including antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, analgesic, antidiabetic, skin healing, antidiarrhoeic, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, insecticide and herbicide activities of Annona crassiflora Mart. extracts. Therefore, these findings demonstrate that Annona crassiflora Mart. fruit, by-products and leaves can be excellent candidates to be used as functional foods and/or sources for obtaining bioactive compounds for the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate dietary supplementation of different levels of dehydrated bocaiuva pulp (DBP) on the productive performance of laying quails, and on lipid oxidation, and quality in their eggs. A total of 120 quails were distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments (0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5% of DBP), five replicates and four birds per experimental unit. To evaluate lipid oxidation, the eggs were collected on five consecutive days at the end of the trial and distributed in a completely randomized experimental design in a 6 × 5 factorial scheme (eggs from quails fed different levels of DBP × evaluated fresh and after 7, 14, 21 and 28 days). The antioxidant potential of diets was improved (p < 0.05) when the DBP was added estimated as 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) free radical scavenging capacity. No effect (p > 0.05) was observed on feed intake, hen-day egg production and feed conversion (kg/kg and kg/dz). There were no changes (p > 0.05) in the egg weight, Haugh unit, yolk index or eggshell percentage. Although no difference was observed (p > 0.05), when comparing each level with the control, a negative linear effect (p < 0.05) on specific gravity was observed. In addition, only the treatment with 0.5% pulp exhibited lower (p < 0.05) eggshell thickness compared with the control (0%). Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) analysis showed that as the dietary pulp level was increased, malondialdehyde content decreased linearly (p < 0.05) in the egg yolks, regardless of the storage period. Inclusion of DBP in the diets had no effect (p > 0.05) on the concentration of conjugated dienes in the eggs. The diets containing DBP showed a potential antioxidant effect, reducing the degree of lipid oxidation in egg yolk. However, no beneficial effects were observed on performance and egg quality.

ABSTRACT

Phenolics present in the free, esterified, glycosylated and insoluble-bound forms of araticum pulp, peel and seed were for the first time characterized and quantified using HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. Levels of total phenolics, flavonoids, condensed tannins and antioxidant activities from araticum fruit followed the order peel > pulp > seed. Overall, insoluble-bound and esterified phenolics were the dominant forms of phenolics from araticum fruit parts and the highest contributors to their antioxidant activities. Extracts were found to contain contrasting levels of phenolics that were specific to each fruit part. From 10 phenolics quantified in araticum fruit, catechin and epicatechin were the major ones from pulp and peel, whereas seed displayed caffeic acid, catechin and epicatechin as its main phenolics. Araticum fruit was found to provide a good source of phenolics, and the full exploitation of this fruit may find applications in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Este trabalho objetivou caracterizar física e quimicamente frutos de araticum coletados de populações naturais de plantas localizadas em cinco áreas de Cerrado do estado de Goiás. O trabalho foi realizado na Escola de Agronomia e Engenharia de Alimentos da Universidade Federal de Goiás. Os frutos maduros foram avaliados individualmente, por área e por planta. Determinaram-se: massas do fruto, da polpa e da casca, diâmetro e altura do fruto, número total de sementes e de sementes defeituosas por fruto, massa das sementes, cores do fruto, da casca e da polpa, textura da casca e teor de sólidos solúveis totais. As características físicas mostraram variação significativa entre frutos de plantas das diferentes áreas. A massa média do fruto foi de 872,06 g. A polpa, parte de importância econômica, representou cerca de 47% dessa massa, cuja variação por região foi de 44% a 49%. O número de sementes foi elevado, em média 108, representando 15,8% da massa do fruto. Há tendência para a cor marrom da casca, assim como para a cor amarelada ou creme da polpa. Observou-se uma variação de textura da casca, desde lisa até rugosa. Do total de 219 frutos avaliados, 15,5% apresentaram o orifício de saída de Bephratelloides pomorum. Houve diferenças significativas entre áreas e entre plantas dentro de áreas para todas as variáveis físicas. A massa média dos frutos de araticum foi de 872,06 g com rendimento médio de polpa, casca e sementes de: 46,8%, 37,4% e 15,8%, respectivamente.


This work objectified to characterize physics chemically and collected fruits of araticum of natural populations of plants located in five areas of Cerrado of the state of Goiás. The work was carried through in the "Escola de Agronomia e Engenharia de Alimentos, Universidade Federal de Goiás". The mature fruits had been evaluated individually, for area and plant. They had been determined: masses of the fruit, the pulp and the rind, diameter and height of the fruit, total number of seeds and defective seeds for fruit, mass of the seeds, colors of the fruit, the rind and the pulp, texture of the rind and total soluble solids. The physical characteristics had shown significant variation between fruits of plants of the different areas. The average mass of the fruit was of 872,06 g. The pulp, part of economic importance, represented about 47% of this mass, whose variation for region was of 44% 49%. The number of seeds was raised, on average 108, representing 15.8% of the mass of the fruit. It has trend for the brown color of the rind, as well as for the yellowish color or cream of the pulp. A variation of texture of the rind was observed, since smooth until rough. Of the total 219 of evaluated fruits, 15.5% had presented the orifice of exit of Bephratelloides pomorum. It inside had significant differences between areas and plants of areas for all the variable physicist. The mass average of the 872,06 fruits of araticum was of g with average income of pulp, rind and seeds of: 46.8%, 37.4% and 15.8%, respectively.

ABSTRACT

O araticum (Annona crassiflora M.) é uma espécie frutífera da família Annonaceae, nativa da região dos cerrados, com ocorrência em todo o Estado de Goiás. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a germinação de sementes de frutos de araticum coletados de populações naturais de plantas localizadas em cinco áreas de Cerrado do Estado de Goiás, tratadas com ácido giberélico (GA3). Determinou-se a velocidade de emergência a cada três dias e o percentual de germinação de sementes, de frutos de 75 plantas. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, com quatro blocos e 75 tratamentos. Cada parcela foi composta por 50 sementes de uma mesma planta, totalizando 15.000 sementes. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e aplicando-se o teste F. Houve germinação da maioria das sementes das plantas de cada área, mostrando que, independentemente do vigor, a dosagem utilizada de ácido giberélico foi adequada. Em média a percentagem de germinação variou de 12,81% em Vila Propicio a 28,81% em Campos Belos. Na planta 10 de Campos Belos observou-se a maior média para germinação (66%) e a menor média de dias necessários para a emergência (49 dias). As sementes provenientes de frutos de araticum das cinco áreas de Cerrado em estudo, apresentam diferenças na percentagem de germinação e na velocidade de emergêngia. As diferenças de germinação ocorrem entre plantas na área e entre áreas.


Araticum (Annona crassiflora M.) is a species of native fruit of the Annonaceas family which grows in the whole State of Goiás, Brazil. The objective of this work was to evaluate the germination of araticum fruits seeds collected of natural populations of plants located in five areas of Cerrado of the State of Goiás, treated with gibberellic acid (GA3). It was determined speed of emergency to each three days and the germination percentage of seeds, fruits of 75 plants. The used delineation was of randomized blocks, with four blocks and 75 treatments. Each parcel was composed for 50 seeds of one same plant, totalizing 15.000 seeds. The data had been submitted to the variance analysis and applying test F. It had germination of the majority of the seeds of the plants of each area, showing that, independently of the vigor, the used dosage of gibberellic acid was adjusted. On average the germination percentage varied of 12.81% in Vila Propicio 28.81% in Campos Belos. In plant 10 of Campos Belos observed it bigger average for germination (66%) and the average minor of necessary days for the emergency (49 days). The seeds proceeding from of araticum fruits of the five areas of Cerrado in study, present differences in the germination percentage and the speed of emergency. The germination differences occur between plants in the area and areas.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo deste trabalho foi a caracterização física, química e bioquímica do pequi, produzido no sul de Minas Gerais, ao longo do seu desenvolvimento. Frutos coletados na 8ª, 9ª, 10ª, 12ª e 13ª semanas após a antese foram selecionados quanto ao tamanho, cor da casca, ausência de injúrias e avaliados quanto à firmeza da polpa, teores de beta-caroteno, de açúcares solúveis totais e de pectinas total e solúvel, assim como quanto à atividade das enzimas pectinametilesterase (PME), poligalacturonase (PG), peroxidase (POD) e polifenoloxidase (PPO). Verificou-se que, com o avanço dos dias, após a antese nos frutos do pequizeiro, ocorre a síntese do beta-caroteno e de açúcares solúveis totais, redução da firmeza, solubilização das pectinas, ausência de PME, diminuição na atividade da PG e aumento nas atividades da POD e da PPO na polpa.


The aim of this study was to characterize physical, chemical and biochemical pequi fruit produced in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil, during their development stages. Fruits collected in the 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th weeks after anthesis, were selected for size, skin color, and absence of injuries and evaluated according to firmness, levels of beta-carotene, total soluble sugars, and total and soluble pectins as well as the activity of pectinmethylesterase (PME), polygalacturonase (PG), peroxidase (POD) and polyphenoloxidase (PPO). It was found that with the advancement of days after anthesis occurs in pequi fruits the synthesis of beta-carotene and total soluble sugars, reducing firmness, pectic solubilization, absence of PME activity, decrease in PG activity and increased in activities POD and PPO in the pulp.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito antioxidante do extrato hidroalcoolico da casca do pequi (EHCP) em ratos após a administração de doxorrubicina (DOX). Foram utilizados ratos da raça Wistar, distribuídos em quatro grupos, sendo que os animais do G1 (n=6) receberam água e solução salina (grupo controle), G2 (n=7) EHCP e solução salina, G3 (n=7) água e DOX e G4 (n=6) EHCP e DOX. O EHCP foi administrado por gavagem durante 10 dias aos ratos dos grupos G2 e G4 e água aos dos G1 e G3. DOX na dose de 10mg kg-1 e solução salina 0,9% foram administradas por via intravenosa no dia sete após o início do experimento aos animais de G3 e G4 e aos de G1 e G2, respectivamente. Foram avaliados peso e taxa de mortalidade. Dez dias após o início do experimento, foi avaliada a concentração sérica de creatina quinase MB (CK-MB), troponina e mioglobina, e os ratos foram submetidos à eutanásia e à avaliação anatomopatológica. Não houve diferença entre os tratamentos quanto ao peso dos animais (P<0,05). Com relação à taxa de mortalidade, houve aumento no grupo 2 (P<0,05). Os resultados do teste qualitativo para a detecção de CK-MB, troponina I e mioglobina nos quatro grupos foram negativos e não foram observadas alterações macroscópicas nos órgãos dos ratos dos diferentes grupos. Constatou-se necrose tubular aguda multifocal de intensidade moderada a acentuada nas regiões cortical e medular nos rins de todos os ratos avaliados. A DOX em dose única de 10mg kg-1 e via intravenosa não promove alterações cardíacas em ratos e o EHCP nas condições avaliadas aumenta o índice de mortalidade em ratos, o que pode estar relacionado a substâncias tóxicas presentes na casca desse fruto.


The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of pequi peel (HEPP) in rats after administration of doxorubicin (DOX). Were used 26 Wistar rats divided into four groups, which G1 (n=6) received water and saline solution (control group), G2 (n=7) HEPP and saline solution, G3 (n=7) water and DOX, and G4 (n=6) HEPP and DOX. The HEPP was administered by gavage for 10 days to G2 and G4 and water to G1 and G3. DOX and saline solution were administered intravenously on day seven after the start of the experiment, with the DOX (10mg kg-1) applied in G3 and G4, and saline solution 0.9% in G1 and G2. Were evaluated weight and mortality rate. Ten days after the start of the experiment were evaluated creatina kinase MB (CK-MB), troponin and myoglobin, and the rats were euthanized and evaluated morphologically. There was no difference between treatments in weight of animals (P>0.05). About the mortality rate an increase in group 2 was showed (P<0.05). The results of the qualitative test for the detection of CK-MB, troponin I and myoglobin in the four groups were negative and there were no macroscopic changes in different rat's organs of different groups. Multifocal and moderate to severe acute tubular necrosis in cortical and medullary regions of the kidneys was observed in all rats studied. DOX intravenous and in a one dose of 10mg kg-1 don't induce cardiac changes in rats and the HEPP in conditions here evaluated increase the rate of mortality of rats, which may be related to toxic substances in the peel of this fruit.
