ABSTRACT

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a specific autoimmune disease related to genetic and autoimmune factors. Recent studies have found that the intestinal flora is one of the important environmental factors in the development of T1D. The gut microbiota is the largest microbiota in the human body and has a significant impact on material and energy metabolism. Related studies have found that the intestinal floras of T1D patients are unbalanced. Compared with normal patients, the abundance of beneficial bacteria is reduced, and various pathogenic bacteria are significantly increased, affecting the occurrence and development of diabetes. Medicinal and food homologous traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a multicomponent, multitarget, and biphasic regulatory effect. Its chemical composition can increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria, improve the diversity of the intestinal flora, reduce blood sugar, and achieve the purpose of preventing and treating T1D by regulating the intestinal flora and its metabolites. Therefore, based on a review of T1D, intestinal flora, and TCM derived from medicine and food, this review describes the relationship between T1D and the intestinal flora, as well as the research progress of TCM interventions for T1D through regulation of the intestinal flora. Medicine and food homologous TCM has certain advantages in treating diabetes and regulating the intestinal flora. It can be seen that there is still great research space and broad development prospects for the treatment of diabetes by regulating the intestinal flora with drug and food homologous TCM.

ABSTRACT

Background: A rapid increase in the prevalence of diabetes is an urgent public health concern among older adults, especially in developing countries such as China. Despite several studies on lifestyle factors causing diabetes, sleep, a key contributor, is understudied. Our study investigates the association between night sleep duration and diabetes onset over a 7-year follow-up to fill information gaps. Method: A population-based cohort study with 5437 respondents used 2011-2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study data. Using self-reported night sleep duration from the 2011 baseline survey, information on new-onset diabetes was collected in follow-up surveys. Baseline characteristics of participants with vs. without new-onset diabetes were compared using Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests. Multivariable Cox regression models estimated the independent relationship between night sleep and new-onset diabetes. The addictive Cox regression model approach and piece-wise regression described the nonlinear relationship between night sleep and new-onset diabetes. Subgroup analysis was also performed by age, gender, body measurement index, dyslipidemia, drinking status, smoking, hypertension, and afternoon napping duration. Result: 549 respondents acquired diabetes during a median follow-up of 84 months. After controlling for confounders, night sleep duration was substantially linked with new-onset diabetes in the multivariable Cox regression model. The risk of diabetes is lower for respondents who sleep longer than 5 hours, except for those who sleep over 8 hours [5.1-6h Hazard ratios (HR) [95% confidence intervals (CI)] = 0.71 (0.55, 0.91); 6.1-7h HR = 0.69 (0.53, 0.89); 7.1-8h HR = 0.58 (0.45, 0.76)]. Nonlinear connections were delineated by significant inflection points at 3.5 and 7.5 hours, with a negative correlation observed only between these thresholds. With one hour more night sleep, the risk of diabetes drops 15%. BMI and dyslipidemia were identified as modifiers when only consider the stand linear effect of sleep duration on diabetes. Conclusion: This study establishes a robust association between night sleep and new-onset diabetes in middle-aged and older Chinese individuals within the 3.5-7.5-hour range, offering a foundation for early glycemic management interventions in this demographic. The findings also underscore the pivotal role of moderate night sleep in preventing diabetes, marking a crucial juncture in community medical research.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a frequent illness in aged men that impacts their quality of life; early childhood exposure to famines may have long-term effects on the chance of developing BPH. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between early-life famine exposure and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) risk in Chinese men born during 1959-1961. Methods: We used medical records from a large, comprehensive hospital to screen people born in China during the years of famine (1959-1961). Birthplaces were identified as indicators of famine exposure status. In the time window between 2017 and 2022, people born during the famine years who had prostatic ultrasonic examinations were selected, and their medical records were retrieved from the database. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses investigated the relationship between famine exposure and BPH risk. Results: A total of 3,009 subjects were included in this study. Patients with heavy famine exposure had older age, shorter height, lighter weight, lower cholesterol, lower uric acid (UA), lower aspartate aminotransferase (ALT), and a higher incidence of BPH than those with light famine exposure (all p < 0.05). Univariate logistic regression showed that BPH was positively related to famine exposure, age, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) but negatively related to UA (all p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression showed that age and famine exposure were still independent risk factors (p < 0.05), while UA was an independent protective factor for BPH (p < 0.05). Heavy famine exposure increased the risk of BPH (adjusted OR = 1.214, 95% CI = 1.05-1.467, p = 0.045). Conclusions and recommendation: Famine and malnutrition exposure during early life may be independent risk factors for BPH in Chinese adults. This relationship provides additional evidence to support the fetal origins of adult diseases and offers clues for the pathological mechanisms of BPH.

Introduction: Cancer, particularly lung cancer, is a significant global healthcare challenge. Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) constitutes 85% of cases. Patients often seek alternative therapies like Chinese medicine alongside Western treatments. This study investigates the survival outcomes and cost-effectiveness of adjunctive Chinese medicine therapy for NSCLC patients in Taiwan. Methods: We utilized the National Health Insurance Research Database in a retrospective cohort study from 2000 to 2018, focusing on NSCLC patients diagnosed between 2007 and 2013. After propensity score matching 1:5 ratio, then compared patients with and without adjunctive Chinese medicine therapy. Survival outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and sensitivity analyses were conducted. Results: The study involved 43,122 NSCLC patients with 5.76% receiving adjunctive Chinese medicine. There is no significant associated between the risk of death and adjuvant Chinese medicine therapy until 181-365 days of adjuvant treatment could reduce the risk of death (HR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.80-0.98). Cost-effectiveness analysis showed an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of 880,908 NT$/year. Conclusion: Adjunctive Chinese medicine therapy, particularly when administered for 181-365 days, significantly reduced the mortality risk among stage IV NSCLC patients. The cost-effectiveness aligns with willingness-to-pay thresholds, indicating economic benefit.

The use of natural ingredients in meat processing has recently gained considerable interest, as consumers are increasingly attracted to clean-label meat products. However, limited research has been conducted on the use of natural substitutes for synthetic phosphates in the production of clean-label meat products. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the potential of oyster shell powder as a substitute for synthetic phosphates in pork patties cured with Chinese cabbage or radish powders. Four different groups of patties were prepared using a combination of 0.3% or 0.6% oyster shell powder and 0.4% Chinese cabbage or radish powder, respectively. These were compared with a positive control group that contained added nitrite, phosphate, and ascorbate and a negative control group without these synthetic ingredients. The results showed that patties treated with oyster shell powder had lower (p<0.05) cooking loss, thickness and diameter shrinkage, and lipid oxidation than the negative control but had lower (p<0.05) residual nitrite content and curing efficiency than the positive control. However, the use of 0.6% oyster shell powder adversely affected the curing process, resulting in a decreased curing efficiency. The impact of the vegetable powder types tested in this study on the quality attributes of the cured pork patties was negligible. Consequently, this study suggests that 0.3% oyster shell powder could serve as a suitable replacement for synthetic phosphate in pork patties cured with Chinese cabbage or radish powders. Further research on the microbiological safety and sensory evaluation of clean-label patties during storage is required for practical applications.

ABSTRACT

Background: The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia continues to increase, which poses a significant risk for coronary artery disease. Some patients with dyslipidemia do not respond to or benefit from conventional lipid-lowering therapy, which warrants the need for alternative and complementary therapies. Chinese patent medicine (CPM) has shown great potential in the treatment of dyslipidemia, but its clinical value needs to be further explored. This study aims to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of CPM in treating dyslipidemia. Methods: This study was registered in INPLASY as INPLASY202330090. The randomized controlled trials included in this study were published in January 2013 to March 2023 and retrieved from the Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, China National Knowledge Internet, WanFang, and VIP. The bias risk in the study was independently evaluated by two reviewers using the Cochrane Randomized Trial Bias Risk Tool (RoB 2) Review Manager 5.4 software was used for the overall effect analysis and subgroup analysis of four blood lipids, and the trial sequential analysis (TSA) was conducted to check the results. Results: A total of 69 studies were included, involving 6,993 participants. The methodological quality was in the middle level. Meta-analysis showed that CPM markedly improved the levels of total cholesterol (TC) [mean difference (MD) =-0.54 mmol/L; 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.71 to -0.37; P<0.001], triglyceride (TG) (MD =-0.43 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.53 to -0.33; P<0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (MD =-0.40 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.50 to -0.30; P<0.001) and increased levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (MD =0.23 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.27; P<0.001), in patients with dyslipidemia. Though CPM did not differ significantly from statins when used alone, it could improve lipid profile better in all cases when used in combination with statins and with drugs used for comorbidities or co-morbidities. Subgroup analysis found that the efficacy of pill formulations was superior to other formulations, and CPM showed better lipid-lowering response in the context of comorbidity. The TSA confirmed the robustness of the analysis of the LDL-C level. No significant difference was observed in the incidence of adverse events between the treatment group and the control group [risk ratio (RR) =0.89; 95% CI: 0.69-1.16; P=0.40]. Conclusions: CPM can yield superior therapeutic effects in ameliorating dyslipidemia without exacerbating adverse effects as an alternative and complementary therapy. In addition, the therapeutic effect can be improved by emphasizing pill formulation and strengthening the standardization of syndromes.

Objective: Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome that occurs with age and is characterized by a gradual decline in muscle mass, power, and functionality. It serves as a prominent contributor to frailty, disability, and mortality among older individuals. Currently, no standardized global guidelines exist for the diagnosis of sarcopenia. This study aimed to establish the correlation between sarcopenia and the constitutions of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), considering the connection between physical functioning and sarcopenia. Methods: A total of 1441 participants in this study were diagnosed with sarcopenia. The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) proposed a sarcopenia definition algorithm. To determine the constitution of each participant, classification and determination standards were used in traditional Chinese medicine. This study evaluated the demographics, lifestyles, and self-reported medical history of individuals diagnosed with sarcopenia through a self-administered questionnaire. The constitution of the participants was determined using TCM classification and determination standards. Subsequently, we analyzed the results of univariate analysis and multivariate regression and constructed a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: Participants who were diagnosed with sarcopenia had substantially lower original Neutral constitution scores (P < 0.050). In comparison to those without sarcopenia, individuals with sarcopenia exhibited notably elevated original Qi-deficiency, Yang-deficiency, Yin-deficiency, Blood-stagnation, and Qi-stagnation scores in contrast to those in the healthy group (P < 0.050). The identified risk factors associated with sarcopenia included the following: Neutral (OR = 0.903), Qi-deficiency (in males, OR = 1.126), Yang-deficiency (OR = 1.062), Phlegm-dampness (in males, OR = 0.833), and Blood-stagnation (in females, OR = 1.089). The highest area under the curve (AUC) was observed for the original neutral constitution score, followed by the Yang-deficiency and blood-stagnation scores (0.644, 0.613, and 0.611, respectively). Additionally, the AUC for the combined original scores of all nine constitutions among males reached 0.778. Conclusions: In this cross-sectional study of older people with higher original Qi-deficiency, Yin deficiency, Yang-deficiency, Blood-stagnation, and Qi-stagnation were associated with sarcopenia. Notably, various TCM constitutions are significantly linked to sarcopenia. There was a significant occurrence of various body constitution types among individuals diagnosed with sarcopenia. The mixture of the nine original constitution scores exhibited good diagnostic performance for sarcopenia in males.

Traditional Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line development is based on random integration (RI) of transgene that causes clonal variation and subsequent large-scale clone screening. Therefore, site-specific integration (SSI) of transgenes into genomic hot spots has recently emerged as an alternative method for cell line development. However, the specific mechanisms underlying hot spot site formation remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to generate landing pad (LP) cell lines via the RI of transgenes encoding fluorescent reporter proteins flanked by recombination sites to facilitate recombinase-mediated cassette exchange. The RI-based LP cell line expressing high reporter levels with spontaneous C12orf35 locus deletion exhibited similar reporter fluorescent protein levels compared to targeted integrants with an identical reporter LP construct at the CHO genome hot spot, the C12orf35 locus. Additionally, Resf1, a C12orf35 locus gene, knockout (KO) in the RI-based LP cell line with conserved C12orf35 increased reporter expression levels, comparable to those in cell lines with C12orf35 locus disruption. These results indicate that the effect of SSI into the C12orf35 locus, a genomic hot spot, on high-level transgene expression was caused by C12orf35 disruption. In contrast to C12orf35 KO, KO at other well-known hot spot sites at specific loci of genes, including Fer1L4, Hprt1, Adgrl4, Clcc1, Dop1b, and Ddc, did not increase transgene expression. Overall, our findings suggest that C12orf35 is a promising engineering target and a hot spot for SSI-based cell line development.

Understanding changes in the distribution patterns and diversity of soil microbial communities from the perspectives of age-related changes, seasonal variations, and the interaction between the two factors can facilitate the management of plantations. In Chinese fir plantations, we collected soils from different depths in over-mature forests, mature forests, near-mature forests, middle-aged forests, and young forests in summer, autumn, and winter in China's subtropical regions. As the forests developed, bacterial and fungal communities' diversity changed, reached a minimum value at near-mature forests, and then increased in mature forests or over-mature forests. Near-mature forests had the lowest topological properties. The Shannon index of microbial communities varied with seasonal changes (P < 0.05). Bacterial and fungal community composition at genus level was more closely related to temperature indicators (including daily average temperature, daily maximum temperature, and daily minimum temperature) (P < 0.01, 0.5554 < R2 <0.8185) than daily average precipitation (P > 0.05, 0.0321 < R2 <0.6773). Bacteria were clustered by season and fungi were clustered by forest age. We suggested that extending the tree cultivation time of plantations could promote microbial community recovery. In addition, we found some species worthy of attention, including Bacteroidetes in autumn in over-mature forests, and Firmicutes in summer in young forests.IMPORTANCEChinese fir [Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook] is an important fast-growing species with the largest artificial forest area in China, with the outstanding problems of low quality in soil. Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in soil fertility by decomposing organic matter, optimizing soil structure, and releasing essential nutrients for plant growth. In order to maintain healthy soil quality and prevent nutrient depletion and land degradation, it is crucial to understand the changes of soil microbial composition and diversity. Our study determined to reveal the change of soil microbial community from stand age, season, and the interaction between the two aspects, which is helpful to understand how interannual changes in different years and seasonal changes in one year affect soil fertility restoration and sustainable forest plantation management. It is a meaningful exploration of soil microbial communities and provides new information for further research.

Background: Untargeted metabonomics has provided new insight into the pathogenesis of sarcopenia. In this study, we explored plasma metabolic signatures linked to a heightened risk of sarcopenia in a cohort study by LC-MS-based untargeted metabonomics. Methods: In this nested case-control study from the Adult Physical Fitness and Health Cohort Study (APFHCS), we collected blood plasma samples from 30 new-onset sarcopenia subjects (mean age 73.2 ± 5.6 years) and 30 healthy controls (mean age 74.2 ± 4.6 years) matched by age, sex, BMI, lifestyle, and comorbidities. An untargeted metabolomics methodology was employed to discern the metabolomic profile alterations present in individuals exhibiting newly diagnosed sarcopenia. Results: In comparing individuals with new-onset sarcopenia to normal controls, a comprehensive analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) identified a total of 62 metabolites, predominantly comprising lipids, lipid-like molecules, organic acids, and derivatives. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis indicated that the three metabolites hypoxanthine (AUC=0.819, 95% CI=0.711-0.927), L-2-amino-3-oxobutanoic acid (AUC=0.733, 95% CI=0.598-0.868) and PC(14:0/20:2(11Z,14Z)) (AUC= 0.717, 95% CI=0.587-0.846) had the highest areas under the curve. Then, these significant metabolites were observed to be notably enriched in four distinct metabolic pathways, namely, "purine metabolism"; "parathyroid hormone synthesis, secretion and action"; "choline metabolism in cancer"; and "tuberculosis". Conclusion: The current investigation elucidates the metabolic perturbations observed in individuals diagnosed with sarcopenia. The identified metabolites hold promise as potential biomarkers, offering avenues for exploring the underlying pathological mechanisms associated with sarcopenia.

ABSTRACT

Background: Although previous clinical studies and animal experiments have demonstrated the efficacy of Gegen Qinlian Decoction (GQD) in treating Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC), the underlying mechanisms of its therapeutic effects remain elusive. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the shared pathogenic mechanisms between T2DM and UC and elucidate the mechanisms through which GQD modulates these diseases using bioinformatics approaches. Methods: Data for this study were sourced from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Targets of GQD were identified using PharmMapper and SwissTargetPrediction, while targets associated with T2DM and UC were compiled from the DrugBank, GeneCards, Therapeutic Target Database (TTD), DisGeNET databases, and differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Our analysis encompassed six approaches: weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), immune infiltration analysis, single-cell sequencing analysis, machine learning, DEG analysis, and network pharmacology. Results: Through GO and KEGG analysis of weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) modular genes and DEGs intersection, we found that the co-morbidity between T2DM and UC is primarily associated with immune-inflammatory pathways, including IL-17, TNF, chemokine, and toll-like receptor signaling pathways. Immune infiltration analysis supported these findings. Three distinct machine learning studies identified IGFBP3 as a biomarker for GQD in treating T2DM, while BACE2, EPHB4, and EPHA2 emerged as biomarkers for GQD in UC treatment. Network pharmacology revealed that GQD treatment for T2DM and UC mainly targets immune-inflammatory pathways like Toll-like receptor, IL-17, TNF, MAPK, and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways. Conclusion: This study provides insights into the shared pathogenesis of T2DM and UC and clarifies the regulatory mechanisms of GQD on these conditions. It also proposes novel targets and therapeutic strategies for individuals suffering from T2DM and UC.

This study purports to investigate the effects of cue and instructor demonstration on Chinese as a second language (CSL) beginners' Chinese character learning performance, cognitive load, learning motivation and attitude. In the current research, 100 CSL beginners were randomly assigned to four experimental groups, i.e., instructor demonstration cued character, instructor demonstration non-cued character, non-instructor demonstration cued character and non-instructor demonstration non-cued character. Participants were instructed to watch an instructional video and subsequently complete a post-test and a questionnaire. The results show that (1) in the presence of instructor demonstration, the cued characters can noticeably reduce CSL beginners' cognitive load and enhance their learning attitudes towards character learning, enabling them to achieve better performance in character stroke but not in radical and structure, and (2) in the presence of cued characters, the instructor demonstration can noticeably reduce CSL beginners' cognitive load and increase their learning motivation and attitudes towards character learning but can not improve their character learning performance. The findings have significant implications for educators and instructional designers of Chinese and other non-alphabetic languages, such as Kanji and Hangul.

Social touch promotes psychological well-being through inducing positive effects on social affiliation and stress alleviation, especially in adolescence. However, there is a scarcity of instruments available for evaluating adolescents' attitude toward social touch in China. The present study aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of the Social Touch Questionnaire (STQ) in Chinese adolescents. A total of 2839 high school students were enrolled, ranging in age from 11 to 19 years. The dimensions of the scale were conducted by exploratory factor analysis, and validated by confirmatory factor analysis. A three-factor model showed the best fit and consisted of the following subgroups: liking of informal social touch, liking of general social touch, and dislike of social touch. Furthermore, positive associations were found between social touch and interaction anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and sleep quality. Short-term prediction of dislike of social touch in anxiety symptoms was determined, while no significant predictor of depressive symptoms was found. The STQ demonstrates reliability and validity as a self-report questionnaire designed to assess behaviors and attitudes toward social touch. It effectively adapts to the nuances of the Chinese context among adolescents.

The establishment of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy model mostly relies on chemometrics, and spectral analysis combined with artificial intelligence (AI) provides a new way of thinking for pharmaceutical quality inspection, new algorithms such as back propagation artificial neural networks (BP-ANN) and swarm intelligence optimization algorithms such as sparrow search algorithm (SSA) provide core technical support. In order to explore the application of AI in the pharmaceutical field, in this study, Angelica dahurica formula granules with a relatively complex system were selected as the research object. Quantitative analysis models were established by using partial least squares regression (PLSR) with a micro-NIR spectrometer, and BP-ANN modeling results were compared. For the best PLSR models of six characteristic components in the continuous counter-current extract of Angelica dahurica, R2v of imperatorin was lower than 0.90, and the RPD values of imperatorin, phellopterin, and isoimperatorin were even lower than 1. When the prediction model established by SSA-BP-ANN was used for quantitative analysis, R2v of six components were all higher than 0.92, and the RPD values all higher than 1.5, which proved that the BP-ANN method was better than PLSR. This study confirmed that in the continuous counter-current extraction progress of Angelica dahurica formula granules, the use of micro-NIR spectrometer combined with AI could realize the rapid prediction of the contents of six characteristic components. The comparison results provided a scientific reference for the process analysis and on-line monitoring in the production process of traditional Chinese medicine by micro-NIR spectrometer combined with AI.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The global obese population is rapidly increasing, urgently requiring the development of effective and safe weight-loss medications. The classic Chinese medicine formulation Lingguizhugan De-coction has exerted a significant anti-obesity effect. However, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the mechanism of LGZGD in the treatment of obesity based on the gut microbiota and its metabolites. METHODS: Three different dosages of LGZGD were gavaged to ob/ob mice for 8 weeks. Body mass and visceral fat mass were evaluated. Additionally, the changes in gut microbiota, fecal and plasma metabolites in mice after LGZGD treatment were analyzed by metagenomics and non-targeted metabolomics. RESULTS: The results demonstrated a significant anti-obesity effect of LGZGD treatment in ob/ob mice. Fur-thermore, the metagenomic analysis revealed that LGZGD reduced the ratio of Firmicutes / Bacteroidetes (F to B) in the gut, restored gut microbiota diversity, and identified 3 enriched KEGG pathways, including energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, and energy production and conversion pathways. Based on non-targeted metab-olomics analysis, 20 key metabolites in the feces and 30 key metabolites in the plasma responding to LGZGD treatment were identified, and the levels of Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Myristoleic acid (MA) might be the metabolites related to gut microbiota after LGZGD treatment. Their biological functions were mainly re-lated to the metabolism pathway. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that LGZGD had therapeutic potential for obesity. The mechanism of LGZGD alleviating obesity was associated with improving dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. LDZGD affected gut microbiota-derived metabolites of EPA and MA and may act on energy metabolism pathways.

BACKGROUND: Uterine sarcoma is a rare and heterogeneous gynecological malignancy characterized by aggressive progression and poor prognosis. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between clinicopathological characteristics and the prognosis of uterine sarcoma in Chinese patients. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective study, we reviewed the medical records of 75 patients with histologically verified uterine sarcoma treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University between 2011 and 2020. Information on clinical characteristics, treatments, pathology and survival was collected. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were visualized in Kaplan-Meier curves. Prognostic factors were identified using the log-rank test for univariate analysis and Cox-proportional hazards regression models for multivariate analysis. RESULTS: The histopathological types included 36 endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS,48%), 33 leiomyosarcomas (LMS,44%) and 6 adenosarcomas (8%). The mean age at diagnosis was 50.2 ± 10.7 years. Stage I and low-grade accounted for the majority. There were 26 recurrences and 25 deaths at the last follow-up. The mean PFS and OS were 89.41 (95% CI: 76.07-102.75) and 94.03 (95% CI: 81.67-106.38) months, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that > 50 years, post-menopause, advanced stage, ≥ 1/2 myometrial invasion, lymphovascular space invasion and high grade were associated with shorter survival (P < 0.05). Color Doppler flow imaging positive signals were associated with shorter PFS in the LMS group (P = 0.046). The ESS group had longer PFS than that of the LMS group (99.56 vs. 76.05 months, P = 0.043). The multivariate analysis showed that post-menopause and advanced stage were independent risk factors of both PFS and OS in the total cohort and LMS group. In the ESS group, diagnosis age > 50 years and high-grade were independent risk factors of PFS, while high-grade and lymphovascular space invasion were independent risk factors of OS. CONCLUSION: In Chinese patients with uterine sarcoma, post-menopause and advanced stage were associated with a significantly poorer prognosis. The prognosis of ESS was better than that of LMS. Color Doppler flow imaging positive signals of the tumor helped to identify LMS, which needs to be further tested in a larger sample in the future.

ABSTRACT

Acute kidney injury (AKI) remains a global public health problem with high incidence, high mortality rates, expensive medical costs, and limited treatment options. AKI can further progress to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and eventually end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Previous studies have shown that trauma, adverse drug reactions, surgery, and other factors are closely associated with AKI. With further in-depth exploration, the role of gut microbiota in AKI is gradually revealed. After AKI occurs, there are changes in the composition of gut microbiota, leading to disruption of the intestinal barrier, intestinal immune response, and bacterial translocation. Meanwhile, metabolites of gut microbiota can exacerbate the progression of AKI. Therefore, elucidating the specific mechanisms by which gut microbiota is involved in the occurrence and development of AKI can provide new insights from the perspective of intestinal microbiota for the prevention and treatment of AKI.
