ABSTRACT

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease. The role of Th17/Treg balance in RA pathogenesis has been increasingly emphasized. In this study, bibliometric and visualization analyses of the top 100 most cited articles on Th17/Treg balance in the field of RA were conducted. Methods: By searching the Web of Science Core Collection database, the top 100 most cited articles of related studies were included, and the authors, countries, institutions, journals, keywords and other information were extracted for analysis using VOSviewer software. Results: The top 100 most cited papers had a total of 7185 citations, with an average citation frequency of 72 (range 21-730). All of them were published between 2011 and 2022. The most influential paper, with 730 citations, was written by "Komatsu, Noriko" in 2014 and published in NATURE MEDICINE. The author with the highest output was "Cho, Mi-La" (n = 24). China was the country with the highest number of publications (n = 42). Catholic University of Korea was the institution with the highest number of publications (n = 24). ARTHRITIS AND RHEUMATISM (n = 7), ARTHRITIS & RHEUMATOLOGY (n = 7) and INTERNATIONAL IMMUNOPHARMACOLOGY (n = 7) were the journals that published the most literature. "Expression" (cytokines and transcription factors, etc) and "differentiation" (T cells, Treg cells, and Th17 cells) were the themes of the research. "Mechanisms", "gut microbiota", "STAT3", "interleukin-6", "synovial fibroblasts" were the hot spots of research in recent years. Conclusions: For the first time, the top 100 most cited articles were analyzed using bibliometric methods. We aimed to grasp the current development and research trends of RA and Th17/Treg-related studies. It is hoped that this study will provide direction and support for future research.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This bibliometric analysis evaluated the top 100 most-cited articles on the application of quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology in caries research. DATA: The following data were collected: title, authors, country, institution, citations count, title and year of article, study design, topic and keywords. Networks among authors and keywords were constructed by VOSviewer software. SOURCES: Scopus database on April 25, 2024. STUDY SELECTION: A global citation score of 4633 (average 46.33 citations) was calculated with publication years ranged from 1999 to 2020. Caries Research emerged as the top contributing journal. Pretty IA was the most prolific author (18 %). United Kingdom had the highest number of most-cited papers (32 %), followed by Netherlands and USA (20 % each). Laboratory studies constituted the predominant study design (45 %), followed by randomized clinical trials (20 %) and non-systematic reviews (11 %). The keywords "dental caries" and "fluorescence" had 81 and 79 occurrences, respectively. The main topic was QLF use for caries detection (45 %). CONCLUSIONS: This paper provides an update summary of the scientific impact of QLF technology application in caries research. QLF has gained increasing attention worldwide, accompanied by a consistent rise in scientific investigations exploring its application in caries research. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The findings offer valuable insights into the most influential articles in QLF technology for caries assessment, serving as a critical resource for researchers, clinicians, and students. Understanding the trends in this field can aid in informed decision-making and the advancement of evidence-based practices in caries management and prevention.

The tremendous increase in publications in Microfinance since 2000 has highlighted need for and importance of innovative techniques to present big data in this field in a most informative, scientific, and summarized manner. The study highlights the trends and patterns of Microfinance literature by revealing what has been done and what could be done in future. The study comprises of 1429 microfinance publications extracted from the Scopus database. The authors adopt bibliometric analysis through open software application R and network analysis techniques using Gephi AND VOS viewer software. The study adds a valuable contribution to the field of Microfinance by distinctively summarizing the important literature. It identifies global academic research trends and provides insights about trending topics, highly cited literature, authors, countries, collaboration network, word cloud, citation analysis, etc. Finally based on extensive literature survey through bibliometric analysis. The study highlights about the scope of future research in Microfinance.

Background: The medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) has been investigated widely in the past 30 years, resulting in many research achievements in this field. Purpose: To perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to evaluate the 100 top-cited articles on the MPFL. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: We searched the Scopus database in December 2022 using the terms "medial patellofemoral ligament" OR "MPFL." The search was confined to English-language articles, including technical notes, systematic reviews on clinical outcomes and/or complications, clinical studies, studies regarding complications, and basic science articles (either cadaveric or biomechanical); we excluded letters, case reports, personal opinions, guidelines, editorials, and narrative or other types of reviews. Analysis of the 100 top-cited articles was performed according to total number of citations, average citations per year (ACY), study type, country of origin, journal of publication, affiliated institution, and most published authors. Results: The total number of citations was 16,358 (range of citations per article, 72-692). The majority of articles were published as clinical studies (54%), with cadaveric studies being the second most common (21%). Most studies originated in the United States (32%), with Japan (15%) and Germany (13%) following. The American Journal of Sports Medicine published the majority of the 100 top-cited articles (37/100; 6304 citations) as well as the 10 top-cited articles according to ACY (7/10; mean, 285.14 citations). The most prolific authors were Nomura (8 articles); Burks (6 articles); and Inoue, Sillanpää, and Dreyhaupt (5 articles each). Conclusion: By analyzing the characteristics of the 100 top-cited articles, this study demonstrated that the MPFL is a growing and popular area of research, with the focus varying through timeline trends. Questions regarding MPFL anatomy, isometry, and biomechanics might have been answered adequately, but research regarding optimal fixation technique under various circumstances is still ongoing.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare yet highly aggressive soft tissue sarcomas of mesenchymal origin, characterized by a heterogeneous pathological spectrum, limited therapeutic options, and high metastatic potential. METHODS: Here, the authors conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the 100 most-cited MPNST articles by utilizing Elsevier's Scopus to identify all relevant published and indexed articles referring to MPNST, thereby aiming to elucidate the pertinent research findings regarding the disease's pathophysiology and therapeutic advancements. Articles were classified as basic science or clinical and analyzed for various bibliometric parameters. RESULTS: The majority of articles (75%) focused on clinical aspects, reflecting the extensive clinicopathological characterization of MPNSTs. Notable studies investigated prognostic factors, histological and immunohistochemical features, and diagnostic modalities. The identification of loss of function mutations in the polycomb repressive complex 2 emerged as a pivotal role, as it opened avenues for potential targets for novel therapeutic interventions. Newer articles (published in or after 2006) demonstrated higher citation rates, suggesting evolving impact and collaboration. CONCLUSIONS: This bibliometric analysis showed how developments in the understanding of MPNST pathophysiology and the creation of novel therapeutic strategies occurred throughout time. Changes that have been noticed recently could portend future innovative therapeutic approaches.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify the 50 most-cited publications relating to lacrosse since 1990 and conduct a bibliometric analysis of the identified studies. METHODS: Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database was queried to identify all publication titles, abstracts, and keywords for the term 'lacrosse' on 9 June 2023. The resulting articles were sorted by total number of citations. Titles and abstracts were included based on their relevance to lacrosse. Once the 50 most cited articles were identified, each article was further analyzed to obtain author name, publication year, country of origin, journal name, article type, research topic, competition level, total number of citations, and the level of evidence. Citation density (total number of citations/years since publication) was calculated and recorded for each of the most-cited studies. RESULTS: The 50 most-cited articles were cited 4237 of times with an average of 84 citations per article. The most cited article was cited 637 (15.0%) times. The articles came from 2 different countries, with the United States and Australia comprising 49 and 1 articles, respectively. All articles were published in English. The American Journal of Sports Medicine published the most articles (n = 21, 42.0%). The most studied topic was concussion/traumatic brain injury (n = 18) followed by studies assessing all injuries (n = 7). Collegiate-level lacrosse was the most studied level of competition (n = 22), while high school-level followed (n = 12). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of the 50 most-cited articles related to lacrosse since 1990 focus on the prevalence, diagnosis and identification of concussion/traumatic brain injury in high school and collegiate-level athletes. These articles are predominantly epidemiological or cohort studies with Level III or IV evidence that almost unanimously originate from the United States.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Choroid plexus tumors (CPT) are relatively rare CNS tumors that primarily occur in children. They are classified as low-grade choroid plexus papilloma, including atypical ones, and high-grade choroid plexus carcinoma based on histological characteristics. There has been extensive academic research regarding these complex tumors. The goal of this work was to identify the 100 most-cited articles pertaining to CPTs in order to better understand the most impactful studies to date. METHODS: In August 2023, Elsevier's Scopus database was searched for the 100 most-cited articles about CPT. To look for trends, articles were classified as either basic science or clinical, and the earliest 50 articles were separated from the latest 50 articles and then were compared. Various bibliometric parameters were summarized and compared using Pearson's chi-square exact test and Wilcoxon rank sum test/Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: The 100 most-cited articles were published between 1955 and 2016 in 53 different scientific journals, originating from 16 distinct countries. Over 75% of the articles were clinical in nature, and overall mean (range) values were as follows: citation count 78.5 (42-371), citation rate per year 3.4 (0.9-12), number of authors 6.2 (1-28). Newer articles had statistically higher citation rate (P < 0.01) and number of authors (P < 0.01) compared to their older counterparts. Additionally, while there was no significant difference in article focus (P = 0.64), there was a difference in study design (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: This study used citation number as a surrogate for article impact and identified the 100 most-cited CPT articles. New mutational analyses have allowed for further subgrouping and positive trends in collaboration shine hope for improvement in treatment outcomes and long-term survival.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have been driven by a growing focus on evidence-based medicine. This transition is reflected in the critical appraisal of both, the quality of work and the potential impact on the orthopedic community. The purpose of our study was to (1) identify the top 100 most-cited articles in TKA in the last decade and from all-time, and (2) compare methodological rigor of the most-cited articles in TKA in the last decade to articles all-time by level of evidence. METHODS: The top 100 cited articles were recorded for manuscripts from the last decade, January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2022, and manuscripts from all-time for TKA. We collected authors, year of publication, journal of the article, country of origin of authors, article type (basic science article, clinical research article), level of evidence, methodological index for non-randomized studies score, physiotherapy evidence database scale, and citation density (total citations/years published). RESULTS: The largest number of studies for all-time TKA (53.0%) and decade TKA (42.0%) were Level III. The average methodological index for non-randomized studies score for comparative studies was 18.7 for all-time TKA and 20.7 for decade TKA (P < .001). The average physiotherapy evidence database score was 6.1 for all-time TKA and 8.1 for decade TKA (P > .05). The highest citation density for all-time TKA was 111 and for past decade was 63. The number of level II studies in TKA increased from 19.0% from all time to 38.0% from the last decade (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings of improved methodologies over time reflect positive steps toward evidence-based practice in TKA. A continued focus on producing methodologically sound studies may guide evidence-based clinical decision-making.

Background: A plethora of monkeypox papers have been published; however, pinpointing key and pivotal studies can be challenging amongst the ever-expanding literature. Bibliometric analyses are helpful in identifying the most influential articles and their impact pertinent to this field, which has helped mould the recognition and management of monkeypox. Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) was searched on 27 October 2022. The top 100 most-cited articles on monkeypox were identified and evaluated by author, country, institution, type of articles, theme, journal of publication, keywords, and citations. Results: The top 100 most-cited studies were published between 1997 and 2022, and the 5-year period with the largest number of articles was 2007-2011. The median number of citations among the top 100 most-cited articles was 78.23. Of the top 100 most-cited studies, 91 were original articles, and nine were reviews, the median of annual citations was significantly higher in the review group than the original group, 7.86 (4.20-13.80) versus 4.50 (3.07-7.59; P=0.023). The 100 articles were classified into different research theme, with the top three being Immunology (31%), Infectious Diseases (30%), and Virology (26%), respectively. The keywords with the highest co-occurrence frequency were "monkeypox", "smallpox," and "smallpox virus." The largest number of articles in the top 100 were published in Emerging Infectious Diseases (n=13), followed by Journal of Virology (n=11), Journal of Infectious Diseases (n=5), and PLoS One (n=5). The authors identified 711 different authors from 195 institutions and 28 countries in the top 100 most-cited articles, with the majority based in the USA. Conclusion: The top 100 most-cited studies provide an important insight into the historical developments of monkeypox. The authors should strengthen the recognition and management of monkeypox worldwide and strengthen research cooperation among scholars in order to better respond to the ongoing or future outbreak.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this scoping review was to explore the top 100 most cited articles in helical tomotherapy (HT) through bibliometric analysis and visualization tools, help researchers comprehensively understand the research hotspots of HT, and provide clear and intuitive network visualization. Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection and the search strategy of "Title (TI)=(tomotherapy)" were used to search for articles related to HT as of 27 May 2023. The top 100 most cited articles were obtained by sorting "citations: highest first". From these top 100 most cited articles, the following information was extracted: journals, years and months, countries, authors, types of tumor treated, and topics. The VOSviewer software was introduced for visualizing all the articles related to HT. Results: The top 100 most cited articles in HT were published between 1999 and 2019. The citation counts of these articles ranges from 326 to 45, with a total of 8,422 citations at the time of searching. The index of citations per year (CPY) ranges from 22.32 to 2.45. These articles originated from 17 countries, with most publications from the United States (n=50), followed by Canada (n=12), Italy (n=10), Germany (n=7) and Belgium (n=5). The International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics published the highest number of articles (n=31), followed by Radiotherapy and Oncology (n=20), Medical Physics (n=13) and Strahlentherapie und Onkologie (n=12). In terms of specific tumor types, head and neck cancer (n=15) is the most common disease, followed by cancers with complex target structures (n=14), breast cancer (n=12), prostate cancer (n=10) and lung cancer (n=8). The most common research topics also include dosimetric comparison (n = 44), quality assurance (n = 12) and Megavoltage CT (n = 8). Conclusion: This scoping review provides a comprehensive list of the 100 most cited articles in HT. This analysis offers valuable insights into the current research directions of HT that can be utilized by researchers, clinicians, and policy-makers.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is arguably the most ubiquitous and hazardous, even at very low levels, starting in early life. The objective of this study was to describe the state of research and future trends on ETS exposure and Children's Health (CH) topics with bibliometrics and altmetrics. METHODS: An electronic search was performed in Scopus database on January 31, 2023. Consensus was arrived on 100 most-cited articles by two reviewers. These papers were then cross matched with citations harvested from Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar. Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) and Dimension counts were also collected. Analysis and network visualization of authors, countries, and keywords were generated using VOSviewer software. RESULTS: Among a total of 1107 articles published on ETS and CH, the 100 top-cited articles appeared in 54 journals, with Pediatrics (n = 12) contributing a maximum number of articles. The time period between 2000 and 2009 accounted for 44% of all publications. With respect to the research design employed across these studies, cross-sectional design took precedence over others accounting for approximately 40%. Predominantly, articles focused on childhood asthma; however, current research trends have shifted towards emerging fields such as children's oral health and DNA methylation. Twitter, policy documents, and news outlets were the main platforms where outputs were discussed. The AAS was not associated with journal impact factor or access type. Weak correlations were observed between AAS and citation count in Scopus, WoS, and Google Scholar (r = 0.17 to 0.27) while a positive association existed between dimension count and the number of citations across all three databases (r = 0.84 to 0.98). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the evolution, digital dissemination and research hotspots in the field of ETS and CH, predicting the possible future research directions. High-quality studies with more specific exposure classification are warranted to better understand the relationship between ETS and CH.

Citation Trend analysis provides a benchmark to gauge and quantify the scientific impact of journals in academic publishing.

PURPOSE: Clavicle fractures are among the most common orthopedic fractures, and treatment methods, operative versus nonoperative, have been a point of contention. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 50 most influential articles regarding clavicle fractures to better understand past focuses of research and to identify any gaps in knowledge. METHODS: A review of the most cited articles related to clavicle fractures was conducted using Web of Science database. A search was conducted in April 2022 by one trained researcher. Two independent researchers evaluated each article based on relevance to clavicle fracture. RESULTS: The mean number of citations was 179.1, ranging from 576 to 81 citations, and collectively cited 8954 times. The decade from 2000 to 2009 contributed the greatest portion of articles, with only a small portion coming from before 1980. The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery-American Volume contributed the greatest number of articles (20%). The majority of the articles were therapeutic (n = 37) and focused on treatment and outcome (n = 32). Most of the clinically focused articles had a level of evidence of IV (n = 26). CONCLUSION: There is an increased influence of recent articles focused on clavicle fracture and management, due to the idea that conventional nonoperative treatment has a high rate of nonunion. Many of the most influential studies evaluate the outcomes of various treatments. Many of these studies, however, are lower levels of evidence, leaving a paucity of high level of evidence articles to support these conclusions. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: V.

BACKGROUND: Since the advent of endovascular treatment, the long-term prognosis of vein of Galen malformation (VOGM) has markedly improved; however, the nature of research leading to this point is unclear. The objective of this study was to define the composition of VOGM research to date, by means of a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited VOGM articles. METHODS: An electronic search of Elsevier's Scopus database was performed to identify the 100 most cited articles on VOGM screened against predetermined criteria. Data were then compared. RESULTS: The 100 most cited VOGM articles were published between 1974 and 2017 in 38 unique journals and originated from 16 unique countries. Mean citation count and rate were 59.4 citations and 2.9 citations/year, respectively. The USA (n = 42); Hôpital de Bicêtre, France (n = 15); and Dr. Pierre Lasjaunias (n = 16) were the largest individual country, institutional, and author contributors. Compared to the older articles (published < 2000), key differences for newer articles were statistically higher citation rates (P < 0.01), more authors (P < 0.01), higher proportion of endovascular treatment descriptions (P = 0.01), and more originating from Asia Pacific (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: From the 100 most cited VOGM articles to date, there has been a noticeable shift from diagnosing VOGM based on the foundational work by Dr. Lasjaunias to understanding how we can model clinical outcomes now that endovascular treatment has become the standard of care. Significant shifts in prognosis are pending, and the current bibliometric data implicate we are on the precipice of more recent works making an impact in the near future.

Purpose: In the past decade, the field of pre-psoas oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) has developed rapidly, and with it, the literature on OLIF has grown considerably. This study was designed to analyze the top 50 articles in terms of the number of citations through bibliometric research to demonstrate the research characteristics and hotspots of OLIF. Method: Searching the Web of Science database yielded the 50 most cited publications in the OLIF field as of July 10, 2022. The publications were ranked according to the number of citations. The following sources were evaluated: the year of publications, the number of citations, authors, countries, institutions, journals, research topics, and keyword hotspots. Results: The most productive period was from 2017 to 2020, with 41 articles. The number of citations varied from 10 to 140, with an average of 35.52, and 1,776 citations were found. World Neurosurgery published the most articles (12), China produced the most articles (16), and the Catholic University of Korea produced the most studies (6). The corresponding author who produced the most articles was J.S. Kim (5), and the first author who produced the most publications was S. Orita (3). The main research topics were anatomical morphology, surgical techniques, indications, outcomes, and complications. The top 10 most cited keywords were "complications," "decompression," "spine," "surgery," "outcomes," "transpsoas approach," "spondylolisthesis," "anterior," "disease," and "injury." Conclusions: Certain articles can be distinguished from others using citation analysis as an accurate representation of their impact due to their long-term effectiveness and peer recognition. With these publications, researchers are provided with research priorities and hotspots through influential literature in the field of OLIF.

Background: Over the last several decades, our understanding of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) has improved considerably, thereby enhancing our ability to clinically diagnose and treat the disease. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the top 100 most-cited publications related to HS to update bibliometric information on HS. Materials and methods: We used the Web of Science database to identify reports on hidradenitis suppurativa. Data from the 100 most-cited publications were extracted and analyzed. Results: The citation number of the top 100 most-cited articles was 89-532 (mean, 153.51), with the most productive periods being from years 2007 to 2016. Most publications originated from the British Journal of Dermatology and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. The 100 articles originated from 18 countries, with Denmark being the most productive country, followed by the United States (17), England (14), and Germany (12). Jemec GB, from the University of Copenhagen, had 32 citations and was the most frequently identified author. The 100 articles encompassed several fields of research as follows: pathogenesis (18%), pathophysiology (7%), epidemiology (14%), clinical diagnosis and features (16%), treatment (25%), comorbidity (10%), and others (10%). In total, 11 reviews, three guidelines, and 86 original articles (nine randomized clinical trials) were included. Conclusion: Through this bibliometric analysis, we aimed to indicate a series of intellectual landmark publications that offer us critical reviews, guidelines, and original articles, which highlight the immense level of progress achieved in the field of HS.

ABSTRACT

Background: Extensive studies related to curcumin were carried out over the preceding several decades. Citation frequencies represent the most prominent contributions in a specific field. This research aimed to identify and analyze the 100 most-cited articles on curcumin and to highlight the most important advances in this field. Methods: Highly cited articles were identified in the Web of Science core collection database. "curcumin*" was used as the search string to retrieve in the "Title" field. VOSviewer was applied to perform bibliometric analysis of these papers. Results: Totally 17,645 publications on the topic of curcumin were identified. The top most-cited 100 articles were published between 1973 and 2017. Most of these papers were original (n = 62). The total citation frequency in the top 100 article ranged from 355 to 3364, with a median of 560. The United States and India were the major countries researching curcumin. The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center was the institution with the highest contribution rate of these articles. The most frequently nominated authors were Aggarwal B. B., Kunnumakkara A. B., Prasad S., and Priyadarsini K. I. The top 100 articles were published in 68 journals. The top four journals in terms of the number of our included articles were Cancer Research (n = 7), followed by Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochemical Pharmacology, and Cancer Letters, with 4 articles each. NF-kappa B, cancer, gene expression, apoptosis, inflammation, chemopreventive agent, and nitric oxide synthase are presumed to be the current hot topics. Bioavailability, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities were the major research directions of curcumin. Conclusion: This study analyzed the 100 most-cited articles on curcumin and provided insights into the characteristics and research hotspots of the articles on this topic.

ABSTRACT

Study Design: Bibliometric analysis. Objective: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a typical surgical method in spine surgery and has progressed significantly in the last several decades. The purpose of this study is to determine how the 100 most-cited original articles on ACDF have been the most influential in this field by identifying and analyzing them. Methods: The articles on ACDF were identified by searching the Thomson ISI Web of Science database on 30 May 2022. The 100 most-cited articles were selected according to specific criteria. The data extracted from the articles included title, publication date, total citations, journal name, first author, institutions, and keywords. Results: The total number of citations was 13,181, with a mean number of 131.81 ± 100.18. The publication dates ranged from 1994 to 2018. Most of these articles originated in the United States (68%) and were published in the 2000s (32%) and 2010s (48%). Spine published most of the articles (30%), followed by the Journal of Neurosurgery-Spine (16%), Spine Journal (14%), and European Spine Journal (13%). The most prolific author was Dr. Todd J Albert (n = 7), with 1,312 citations. The Texas Back Institute was the most productive institution (n = 10). The keywords ACDF, cervical spine, cervical spine, and fusion showed the highest degree of centrality. Conclusion: One hundred top-cited articles on ACDF were identified and analyzed in this study. We demonstrate that ACDF is a growing and popular area of research, with the focus of research varying through timeline trends. This will provide a comprehensive and detailed basis for spine surgeons to make clinical decisions and assimilate the research focus of cervical spine surgery.

Background: Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research is one of the most influential and reputable scientific journals in the field of orthopaedics. Some of the most reputable publications related to orthopaedic research can be attributed to this journal and it continues to have a significant impact on modern research. Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the most influential articles, in terms of number of citations, published by Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. The goal of analyzing the most cited articles in is to create a baseline for future researchers to build upon and to uncover any trends in orthopaedic research. Methods: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews guidelines were used to structure the data collection and analysis of this study. The Scopus database was used to compile the publication data. Data was then exported to an excel sheet to be further analyzed via a multi-author review process. Results: The most cited article was "A Clinical Method of Functional Assessment of the Shoulder" by Constant et al.. The 50 articles analyzed in this study were cited a total of 32,404 times, averaging 719 citations per year, per publication. The oldest article was published in 1971, and the newest in 2008. The United States was the country with the most attributable publications and The University of Florida was the most contributory institution. Conclusions: Our study recognizes Clinical Orthopaedics and Related research as having a strong predilection for older articles and a continued strength for modern publications.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To compile and analyze the top 50 most frequently cited articles published in the Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy journal. Methods: Guidelines set by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews were used as the foundation for data collection and analysis. Scopus database was used to acquire the metric analyzed in the study. Once collected, the data was exported to an excel sheet in order to be organized, sorted, and analyzed in accordance with the metrics of interest. Results: The United States was the most contributory nation with 14 publications, followed by Sweden with13 publications and Germany with eight publications. The most contributory institution was Umeå University in Vasterbottens, Sweden (8) followed by National Institute for Working Life in Stockholm, Sweden (7) and The University of Pittsburgh (5). Most publications were either Level II (19) or Level III (19) in terms of Level of Evidence. There was only one publication that was classified as a Level I paper. Conclusion: The Journal of Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, and Arthroscopy has published very influential research papers as noted by the number of citations amassed by its most popular articles. KSSTA's top cited publications hail largely from major European and United States institutions and are composed of high-quality reports of mostly Level 2 and Level 3 evidence classifications.
