ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggested that the combination of tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) and dietary nutrients intake may be related to a higher or lower risk of hypertension. However, the relationship between dietary magnesium (Mg) intake, TSE and the odds of hypertension remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association of TSE, dietary Mg intake and the odds of hypertension among children and adolescents. METHOD: Data of this study were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2007-2018. Dietary Mg intake was calculated as the average of two days of dietary and supplementations intake. Serum cotinine concertation ≥ 0.05 µg/L or at least one-person smoking in the household was considered as exposing to the tobacco smoke. The weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were utilized to explore the associations of dietary Mg intake, TSE and the odds of hypertension among children and adolescents with the evaluation index of odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses based on different age, gender and overweight were further assessed these associations. RESULTS: A total of 7,122 children and adolescents aged 8-17 years old and with the blood pressure measurement were included. Of which, 948 (13.31%) had hypertension. After adjusting all covariates, we observed children and adolescents exposed to tobacco smoke was related to higher odds of hypertension (OR = 1.34, 95%CI: 1.01-1.78); children and adolescents not reached the dietary Mg references intakes was related to higher odds of hypertension (OR = 1.48, (95%CI: 1.11-1.97); compared to children and adolescents non-TSE and reached the DRIs of Mg, those not reached the DRIs of Mg and exposed to tobacco smoke have the highest odds of hypertension (OR = 1.94, 95%CI: 1.30-2.89, P for trend = 0.002). These associations of dietary Mg intake, TSE and hypertension remain robust after the stratified analysis based on age, gender and overweight was conducted. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggested there were a robust association between dietary Mg intake, TSE and hypertension in children and adolescents. Those children and adolescents with deficiency dietary Mg intake and exposed to tobacco smoke may have the high odds of hypertension. More restrictions on smoking as well as Mg supplementation in the prevention and treatment of hypertension among children and adolescents might be justified.

BACKGROUND: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has been reported to be associated with the children's neurodevelopment, who may be exposed to tobacco smoke simultaneously. The evidence about joint effect of DHA intake and tobacco smoke exposure on children and adolescents' learning disabilities (LD) was limited. The objective of this study was to assess the joint effect of DHA intake and tobacco smoke exposure on children and adolescents' LD. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of the NHANES 1999-2004 was performed. Children and adolescents aged 6-15 years old were included. The outcome was diagnosed by parental report of ever health professionals or school representative-identified LD. Dietary DHA intake data were obtained by food frequency questionnaire and tobacco smoke exposure levels were evaluated by serum cotinine levels. Weighted univariable and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the joint effect of DHA intake and tobacco smoke exposure on LD in children and adolescents, with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). This joint association was further assessed after stratification by age, gender, body mass index, the history of attention deficit disorder and seen mental health professional. RESULTS: We identified 5,247 children and adolescents in present study, of whom 593 (11.30%) had LD. After adjusting covariates, we observed children and adolescents with DHA intake (OR = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.61-0.96) was related to lower incidence of LD; children who exposure to tobacco smoke was related to higher incidence of LD (OR = 1.54, 95%CI: 1.07-2.23); children and adolescents who exposure to tobacco smoke and without DHA intake were related to highest odds of LD (OR = 2.08, 95%CI: 1.37-3.17, P for trend = 0.042), that was, DHA and tobacco smoke exposure may have a joint effect on the odds of LD in children and adolescents. Subgroup analyses suggested this joint effect was robust especially among children and adolescents with normal & underweight BMI and without the history of attention deficit disorder and seen mental health professional. CONCLUSION: Increasing the DHA intake and reducing tobacco smoke exposure may have a potential role in the prevention of LD in children and adolescents. This joint effect warrants further investigation by large-scale prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease with all-cause mortality increasing globally. Dietary magnesium (Mg), an anti-inflammatory nutrient, has been proven to be associated with the all-cause mortality. The association of dietary Mg intake and all-cause mortality in RA patients remains unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the association between dietary Mg intake and all-cause mortality in RA patients. METHODS: RA patients were extracted from the NHANES 1999-2018, and followed for survival through December 31, 2019. Dietary Mg intake data were obtained from 24-h dietary recall interview. The association between dietary Mg intake and RA patients' all-cause mortality was explored based on weighted univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard models and described as absolute risk difference (ARD), hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). This association was further explored in subgroup analyses based on different age, gender and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: Totally 2,952 patients were included. Until 31 December 2019, a total of 825 deaths were documented. RA patients with higher dietary Mg intake had a 11.12% reduction of all-cause mortality (ARD=-11.12%; HR = 0.74, 95%CI: 0.56-0.99) in the fully adjusted model, especially in female (HR = 0.68, 95%CI: 0.47-0.98), aged < 65 years (HR = 0.59, 95%CI: 0.37-0.94) and BMI ≤ 30 kg/m2 (HR = 0.62, 95%CI: 0.42-0.91). CONCLUSION: RA patients who consumed adequate dietary Mg from diet as well as supplements may had a lower risk of all-cause mortality.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between uric acid to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) and circulating α-klotho levels in U.S. adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2016. Circulating α-klotho was defined as the dependent variable and UHR was defined as the independent variable. Multivariable linear regression was performed to assess the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. The nonlinear relationship and effect size between UHR and α-klotho were evaluated using smooth curve fitting and threshold effect analysis. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were conducted to determine the stability of the results. The diagnostic performance of UHR and α-klotho in common elderly diseases was compared using ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) analysis. RESULTS: Among 12,849 participants, there was a negative relationship between the UHR and circulating α-klotho. In the fully adjusted overall model, each unit increase in UHR was associated with a decrease of 4.1 pg/mL in α-klotho. The threshold effect analysis showed that before the inflection point of 8.2, each unit increase in UHR was associated with a decrease of 15.0 pg/mL in α-klotho; beyond the inflection point of 8.2, each unit increase in UHR was associated with a decrease of 2.8 pg/mL in α-klotho. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analysis indicated that the relationship between UHR and α-klotho remained stable across most populations. The ROC diagnostic test indicated that the evaluative efficacy of UHR in diagnosing age-related diseases was comparable to that of α-klotho. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that the UHR was associated with the circulating α-klotho concentration, with a negative association observed in most cases. This finding suggested that the UHR might be a promising indicator for evaluating circulating α-klotho levels.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Osteoporosis is an inflammatory disease that causes a large disease burden worldwide. Dietary inflammation index (DII), a comprehensive assessment index that reflects the pro-inflammatory/anti-inflammatory level of diet was related to multiple inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to explore the association between DII and all-cause mortality in patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, data of patients aged ≥ 45 years diagnosed as osteopenia or osteoporosis and had complete dietary intake information were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2007-2010, 2013-2014, 2017-2018). Dietary intake information was obtained from 24-h dietary recall interviews and was used to calculate the DII score. Weighted univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were utilized to explore the association between DII and all-cause mortality in patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia, with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses based on different age, gender and complications were further assessed this association. Results: A total of 5,381 patients were included. Until December 31, 2019, 1,286 all-cause deaths occurred. After adjusting all covariates, high DII was associated with the high odds of all-cause mortality among patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia (HR=1.28, 95 %CI: 1.10-1.48), especially in the male (HR=1.38, 95 %CI: 1.06-1.78), aged < 65 years (HR=1.49, 95 %CI: 1.09-2.02), and without the history the cardiovascular disease (HR=1.30, 95 %CI: 1.03-1.65), diabetes mellitus (HR=1.27, 95 %CI: 1.06-1.52) and chronic kidney disease (HR=1.28, 95 %CI: 1.03-1.58). Conclusion: A pro-inflammatory diet may have an adverse effect on the prognosis of osteoporosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a public health problem among the worldwide population. Dietary as a modifiable factor have been reported to be associated with glaucoma. This study aimed to explore the association between quantity and quality of carbohydrate (CH) intake and glaucoma among U.S. adults. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data of participants aged ≥ 40 years old were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2008. CH intake information were obtained by 24-h dietary recall interview. Glaucoma was defined by regraded disc images. Covariates included demographic information, physical examination, laboratory values, complications and nutrients intake. The weighted univariable and multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between the quantity and quality of CH intake and glaucoma. Subgroup analyses based on the history of hypertension were further assessed the association. RESULTS: The weighted population included a total of 4789 participants, of whom 119 (2.48%) had glaucoma. After adjusting for age, adrenal cortical steroids, hypertension, chronic kidney diseases, diabetes and energy intake, high quantity (OR = 1.83, 95%CI: 1.08-3.11) and low quality (OR = 0.44, 95CI%: 0.20-0.98) of CH intake were associated with the higher odds of glaucoma. High quantity of CH intake (OR = 2.06, 95%CI: 1.15-3.69) was associated with the high odds of glaucoma in hypertension, while high quality of CH intake (fiber-to-CH ratio: OR = 0.23, 95%CI: 0.06-0.82; CH-to-fiber and fiber-to-added sugars ratio: OR = 0.10, 95%CI: 0.02-0.53) were associated with the lower odds of glaucoma in participants without hypertension. CONCLUSION: In NAHNES 2005-2008, higher quantity and lower quality CH intake were associated with the high odds of glaucoma, especially among patients without hypertension. This study provides a theoretical basis for the health management of glaucoma patients from the perspective of dietary intake.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, dental caries is a bacterial biofilm-mediated condition with a high morbidity in children and adolescents. Flavonoids are a class of active natural products with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. In vivo and in vitro studies have shown that they can promote tooth mineralization and reduce inflammation. However, the association of flavonoids intake and dental caries in children and adolescents remain unclear. AIM: This study was to evaluated the association of flavonoid and its subclass intake and dental caries in children and adolescents. METHODS: Data of participants aged 2-17 years were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (2017-2018). Dental caries was measured via the decayed or filled surfaces in primary teeth or permanent teeth (dfs/DFS) index. The weighted univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were utilized to explore the association of flavonoids intake with dental caries in children and adolescents, with odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroups analyses based on age, and overweight/obesity were further assessed the association. Subgroup analysis were further performed to explore whether the association between subclasses of anthocyanidins and catechins with dental caries was robust stratified by age and individual with overweight/obesity. RESULTS: Among totally 1,818 children and adolescents, 786 (43.2%) had dental caries. High intake of anthocyanidins (OR=0.69, 95%CI: 0.52-0.92) and catechins (OR=0.64, 95%CI: 0.44-0.92) were associated with lower odds of dental caries. Similar results were discovered in individuals aged ≥6 years (anthocyanidins, OR=0.62, 95%CI: 0.43-0.90; catechins, OR=0.62, 95%CI: 0.40-0.96), and without overweight/obesity (anthocyanidins, OR=0.58, 95%CI: 0.37-0.90; catechins, OR=0.51, 95%CI: 0.31-0.84). Further investigation found that high intake of cyanidin, petunidin, malvidin, peonidin, (+)-Catechin, (-)-Epigallocatechin, and (-)-epicatechin were associated with lower odds of dental caries in children and adolescents. CONCLUSION: High intake of anthocyanidins and catechins were associated with lower odds of dental caries in children and adolescents and are a promising intervention to be further explored in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Red blood cell (RBC) folate is an indicator of long-term folate nutrition. Whether there is an association between RBC folate and periodontitis is unclear. This study aimed to use the NHANES database to determine whether RBC folate is associated with moderate/severe periodontitis. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 10,151 participants in the NHANES database from 2009 to 2014 was performed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the independent relationship between RBC folate and moderate/severe periodontitis. The generalized additive model (GAM), restricted cubic splines (RCS), smooth curve fitting, and threshold effect analysis were used to explore the dose-response relationship and the potential nonlinear relationship between RBC folate and periodontitis. Finally, subgroup analysis and interaction tests were performed to determine the effect of covariates on the relationship between RBC folate and moderate/severe periodontitis. RESULTS: After adjusting for all confounders, there was a negative association between RBC folate concentration and moderate/severe periodontitis. The lowest fraction Q1 (< 360 ng/mL) of RBC folate concentration was used as the reference group, multivariable-adjusted ORs and 95% CIs of the second (360-463 ng/mL), third (464-569 ng/mL), fourth (570-732 ng/mL), and the highest quintile (> 733 ng/mL) categories were 0.88 (0.77, 1.01), 0.83 (0.72, 0.96), 0.77 (0.67, 0.90), 0.65 (0.56, 0.77) respectively. Additionally, a threshold nonlinear association was found between RBC folate (ng/mL) log2 transformation and moderate/severe periodontitis. CONCLUSION: This cross-sectional study revealed a negative relationship between RBC folate and moderate/severe periodontitis within a certain threshold range. Dentists and policymakers should pay closer attention to oral hygiene and health care for people with low or high RBC folate levels. Further causal and longitudinal research mechanisms are needed to validate our findings.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease, and depression is a most frequent comorbid condition associated with RA. Studies have shown that inflammation plays a vital role in the pathophysiology of depression and RA. Mediterranean diet (MED) has been proved to be a healthy anti-inflammatory dietary pattern. This study aims to explore the association between the adherence to Mediterranean diet (aMED) and depression in RA patients. METHODS: In this study, RA patients aged ≥ 20 years old were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NAHNES) database. Dietary intake information was obtained from 24-h dietary recall interview. Covariates included sociodemographic information, lifestyles, laboratory parameters, and the history of diseases and medications were included. The weighted univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the association between aMED and depression. Subgroup analysis was conducted to further explore the association between MED components and depression. RESULTS: Totally 1,148 patients were included, of whom 290 (25.26%) had depression. After adjusted all covariates, high aMED was associated with the lower odds of depression in RA patients (OR = 0.53, 95%CI: 0.29-0.97). Among MED components, higher consumption of vegetables (OR = 0.54, 95%CI: 0.34-0.84) and cereals (OR = 0.63, 95%CI: 0.39-0.99) contributed more to decrease the odds of depression. CONCLUSION: Greater aMED may have potential benefits for improving mental health in RA patients. Future large-scale cohort studies are needed to explore the association between aMED and depression in RA patients.

Background: Research on post-infarction insomnia, particularly short sleep duration following myocardial infarction (MI), remains limited. Currently, there are no existing guidelines or risk prediction models to assist physicians in managing or preventing short sleep duration or insomnia following MI. This study aims to develop a nomogram for predicting the risk of short sleep duration after MI. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on 1434 MI survivors aged 20 and above, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database spanning from 2007 to 2018. Among them, 710 patients were assigned to the training group, while 707 patients were allocated to the testing group. We utilized logistic regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, and the elastic network for variable selection. The stability and accuracy of the prediction model were assessed using receiver operator characteristics (ROCs) and calibration curves. Results: We included five variables in the nomogram: age, poverty income ratio (PIR), body mass index (BMI), race, and depression. The ROC curves yielded values of 0.636 for the training group and 0.657 for the testing group, demonstrating the model's good prediction accuracy and robustness through a calibration curve test. Conclusions: Our nomogram can effectively predict the likelihood of short sleep duration in MI survivors, providing valuable support for clinicians in preventing and managing post-MI short sleep duration.

Background: Pesticides are widely used in agricultural activities. Although pesticide use is known to cause damage to the human body, its relationship with thyroid function remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between pesticide exposure and thyroid function. Methods: The Chinese database used included 60 patients with pyrethroid poisoning and 60 participants who underwent health checkups between June 2022 and June 2023. The NHANES database included 1,315 adults enrolled from 2007 to 2012. The assessed pesticide and their metabolites included 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 4-fluoro-3-phenoxybenzoic acid (4F3PB), para-nitrophenol (PN), 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3P), and trans-dichlorovinyl-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (TDDC). The evaluated indicators of thyroid function were measured by the blood from the included population. The relationship between pesticide exposure and thyroid function indexes was investigated using linear regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), restricted cubic spline (RCS), and weighted quantile sum (WQS) models. Results: The Chinese data showed that pesticide exposure was negatively correlated with the thyroid function indicators FT4, TT4, TgAb, and TPOAb (all p < 0.05). The BKMR model analysis of the NHANES data showed that the metabolic mixture of multiple pesticides was negatively associated with FT4, TSH, and Tg, similar to the Chinese database findings. Additionally, linear regression analysis demonstrated positive correlations between 2,4-D and FT3 (p = 0.041) and 4F3PB and FT4 (p = 0.003), whereas negative associations were observed between 4F3PB and Tg (p = 0.001), 4F3PB and TgAb (p = 0.006), 3P and TgAB (p = 0.006), 3P and TPOAb (p = 0.03), PN and TSH (p = 0.003), PN and TT4 (p = 0.031), and TDDC and TPOAb (p < 0.001). RCS curves highlighted that most pesticide metabolites were negatively correlated with thyroid function indicators. Finally, WQS model analysis revealed significant differences in the weights of different pesticide metabolites on the thyroid function indexes. Conclusion: There is a significant negative correlation between pesticide metabolites and thyroid function indicators, and the influence weights of different pesticide metabolites on thyroid function indicators are significantly different. More research is needed to further validate the association between different pesticide metabolites and thyroid disease.

AIM: Liver fibrosis (LF) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Studies have found that vitamin D (VD), as a modifiable factor has been reported to be associated with LF. The relationship between serum VD concentration and LF in DM patients has rarely been reported. The aim of this study was to assess the association between serum VD concentration and LF in DM patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data of DM patients aged ≥ 45 years were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2017-2018). Serum VD concentration was measured by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Vibration controlled transient elastography (VCTE) was used to measure liver stiffness. Covariates included sociodemographic information, lifestyles, laboratory data, diseases history were extracted from the database. The weighted univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were utilized to explore the association between serum VD concentration and LF in DM patients, and were described as odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses based on BMI, liver steatosis, hypertension and dyslipidemia were further assessed the association. RESULTS: A total of 799 patients were included, of which 188 (23.53%) had LF. Higher serum VD concentration was associated with the lower odds of LF (OR = 0.33, 95% CI 0.19-0.59) and advanced LF (OR = 0.31, 95% CI 0.17-0.55) in DM patients after adjustment for race, liver steatosis, BMI, smoking, drinking, AST, ALT and physical activity, especially in patients with liver steatosis (OR = 0.28, 95% CI 0.13-0.59) and dyslipidemia (OR = 0.31, 95% CI 0.14-0.66), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: High serum VD concentration may have a potential benefit for maintain the liver health in DM patients.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The oxidative balance score (OBS), a composite score of dietary nutrients and lifestyles, reflects an individual's oxidative and antioxidant status. Evidence showed that oxidative stress levels were related to hearing loss. The relationship between OBS and hearing loss remains unclear. This study was to explore the association between OBS and hearing loss in adults. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data of participants aged 20-69 years who received hearing tests were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (2011-2012, 2015-2016). Hearing loss was defined as hearing threshold >25 dB in either ear. The OBS was composed of 16 dietary nutrients and 4 lifestyles. The covariates were screened using the backward stepwise regression analysis. The association of OBS and hearing loss was assessed with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroups of age, gender, occupational noise exposure, recreational noise exposure, firearm noise exposure, and veteran status were further evaluated the associations. The importance ranking of OBS components was analyzed by the weighted random forest model. Results: Of the total 3,557 adults, 338 (9.5%) suffered from hearing loss. High OBS levels were associated with lower odds of hearing loss (OR = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.41-0.82), after adjusting age, gender, race, hypertension, tinnitus, recreational noise exposure, and occupational noise exposure. Similar results were discovered in individuals aged50-59 years old (OR = 0.47, 95%CI: 0.24-0.93), aged 60-69 years old (OR = 0.31, 95%CI: 0.16-0.61), with female (OR = 0.44, 95%CI: 0.20-0.96), without occupational noise exposure (OR = 0.31, 95%CI: 0.16-0.62), recreational noise exposure (OR = 0.48, 95%CI: 0.30-0.76), firearm noise exposure (OR = 0.38, 95%CI: 0.19-0.77), and veteran status (OR = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.39-0.82). In OBS components, vitamin B12, total fat and physical activity were important for hearing loss. Conclusion: Elevated OBS may be associated with hearing health in adults. Appropriate vitamin B12 supplementation, reduction of total fat intake, and increased physical activity may be beneficial to the prevention of hearing loss.

ABSTRACT

Background: ASCVD is the primary cause of mortality in individuals with T2DM. A potential link between ASCVD and T2DM has been suggested, prompting further investigation. Methods: We utilized linear and multivariate logistic regression, Wilcoxon test, and Spearman's correlation toanalyzethe interrelation between ASCVD and T2DM in NHANES data from 2001-2018.The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) wereconducted to identify co-expression networks between ASCVD and T2DM. Hub genes were identified using LASSO regression analysis and further validated in two additional cohorts. Bioinformatics methods were employed for gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis, along with the prediction of candidate small molecules. Results: Our analysis of the NHANES dataset indicated a significant impact of blood glucose on lipid levels within diabetic cohort, suggesting that abnormal lipid metabolism is a critical factor in ASCVD development. Cross-phenotyping analysis revealed two pivotal genes, ABCC5 and WDR7, associated with both T2DM and ASCVD. Enrichment analyses demonstrated the intertwining of lipid metabolism in both conditions, encompassing adipocytokine signaling pathway, fatty acid degradation and metabolism, and the regulation of adipocyte lipolysis. Immune infiltration analysis underscored the involvement of immune processes in both diseases. Notably, RITA, ON-01910, doxercalciferol, and topiramate emerged as potential therapeutic agents for both T2DM and ASCVD, indicating their possible clinical significance. Conclusion: Our findings pinpoint ABCC5 and WDR7 as new target genes between T2DM and ASCVD, with RITA, ON-01910, doxercalciferol, and topiramate highlighted as promising therapeutic agents.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways with a gender differences in the prevalence after puberty. Recent studies have reported a relationship between asthma and endometriosis, possibly related to the immune response mechanisms, but the evidences are limited and inconsistent. Herein, this research aimed to investigate the association of endometriosis with asthma based on the representative population in the United States (U.S.) to provide some reference for further exploration on mechanism of gender difference in asthma. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data of women aged ≥ 20 years old were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database in 1999-2006. Weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were utilized to explore the association of endometriosis with asthma. The multivariate models adjusted for covariates including age, race, education level, marital status, poverty income ratio (PIR), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, smoking, estrogen and progesterone hormones use, uterine fibroids, at least one ovary removed, and birth control pills intake. The evaluation indexes were odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses of age, race, BMI, and pregnancy history were also performed. RESULTS: Among 5,556 eligible women, 782 had asthma, and 380 had endometriosis. The average age of participants was 37.19 years old, and more than half of them were non-Hispanic White (68.44%). After adjusting for covariates, endometriosis was associated with higher odds of asthma compared with non-endometriosis [OR = 1.48, 95%CI: (1.10-1.99)]. This relationship was also found in 40-49 years old [OR = 2.26, 95%CI: (1.21-4.23)], BMI of 25-29.9 kg/m2 [OR = 2.87, 95%CI: (1.52-5.44)], and pregnancy history [OR = 1.44, 95%CI: (1.01-2.06)] subgroups. CONCLUSION: Endometriosis had a positive association with asthma in adult women. Females aged 40-49 years old, with BMI of 25-29.9 kg/m2 and had a history of pregnancy should take care about monitoring endometriosis to reduce the potential risk of asthma. Further studies are still needed to clarify the causal association between endometriosis and asthma.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the association between birth weight (BW) and abnormal HOMA-IR in US adolescents aged 12-15 years. The role of concurrent body mass index (BMI) in adolescence was also examined. METHODS AND RESULTS: This retrospective cohort study included 3429 participants from NHANES with data in 1999-2020. HOMA-IR ≥2.3 was considered abnormal. Participants were classified as low (LBW; <2.5 kg), normal (NBW; 2.5-4.0 kg), or high (HBW; >4.0 kg) BW. Logistic regression was used to explore the association between BW and HOMA-IR. Mediation analysis was used to examine whether BMI z-score in adolescence mediated the association between BW and HOMA-IR. Compared with those in NBW, the odds ratios (95 % CI) of abnormal HOMA-IR in LBW and HBW groups were 1.26 (0.99-1.60), and 0.62 (0.47-0.83) respectively. The association between BW and abnormal HOMA-IR was consistent in all subgroups with no significant interactions. Mediation analysis showed that BW is associated with lower risk of HOMA-IR directly, but with higher risk indirectly via BMI in adolescence. CONCLUSION: There was a negative linear relationship between BW and the prevalence of abnormal HOMA-IR in adolescents aged 12-15 independent of concurrent BMI. Children who were born with LBW but had high BMI in adolescence were of particularly higher risk of insulin resistance.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of depression is increasing in the elderly population, and growing evidence suggests that malnutrition impacts mental health. Despites, research on the factors that predict depression is limited. METHODS: We included 2946 elderly individuals from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning the years 2011 through 2014. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the PHQ-9 scale. Multinomial logistic regression was performed to evaluate the independent association between Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and depression prevalence and scores. Subgroup analysis was conducted to explore potential factors influencing the negative correlation between GNRI and depression. Restricted cubic spline graph was employed to examine the presence of a non-linear relationship between GNRI and depression. RESULTS: The depression group had a significantly lower GNRI than the non-depression group, and multivariate logistic regression showed that GNRI was a significant predictor of depression (P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that certain demographic characteristics were associated with a lower incidence of depression in individuals affected by GNRIs. These characteristics included being female (P < 0.0001), non-Hispanic black (P = 0.0003), having a moderate BMI (P = 0.0005), having a college or associates (AA) degree (P = 0.0003), being married (P = 0.0001), having a PIR between 1.50 and 3.49 (P = 0.0002), being a former smoker (P = 0.0002), and having no history of cardiovascular disease (P < 0.0001), hypertension (P < 0.0001), and diabetes (P = 0.0027). Additionally, a non-linear negative correlation (non-linear P < 0.01) was found between GNRI and depression prevalence, with a threshold identified at GNRI = 104.17814. CONCLUSION: The GNRI demonstrates efficacy as a reliable indicator for forecasting depression in the elderly population. It exhibits a negative nonlinear correlation with the prevalence of depression among geriatric individuals.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To assess the contemporary prevalence and decade-long trends of sleep duration, sleep disorders and trouble sleeping among adults in the United States, as well as their risk factors, from 2005 to 2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data to calculate the sleep duration and weighted prevalence of sleep disorders and trouble sleeping in adults aged 20 years or older. Sleep duration, sleep disorders and trouble sleeping were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 27,399 people were included in the survey on sleep duration, with a weighted percentage of normal sleep (7-8 h/night) of 56.33 % (95 % CI, 53.06-59.60 %) and a weighted percentage of short sleep (5-6 h/night) of 31.73 %. In stratified descriptions, participants aged 40-49 years were more likely to sleep less than five hours, while women aged 80 years and older were more likely to sleep longer and blacks were more likely to sleep shorter. A total of 27,406 participants were included in the survey for sleep disorders. The weighted proportion of the population with sleep disorders was 8.44 % (95 % CI, 7.79-9.8 %). Independent risk factors for sleep disorders were being 40-69 years old, being white, having a high education level, smoking, having hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and BMI ≥ 25. From 2005 to 2014, the prevalence of sleep disorders increased year by year, from 7.44 % in 2005-2006 to 10.40 % in 2013-2014 (P for Trend<0.001). A total of 38,165 participants were included in the survey on trouble sleeping. The weighted proportion of the population with troubled sleeping was 27.30 % (25.70-28.90 %). Independent risk factors for troubled sleeping were being 30-79 years old, being white, having a high education level, smoking, drinking, having hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and BMI ≥ 25. From 2005 to 2018, the prevalence of trouble sleeping increased annually, from 24.44 % in 2005-2006 to 30.58 % in 2017-2018 (P for trend<0.001). CONCLUSION: Adults in the United States are likely to have abnormal sleep durations, and the prevalence of sleep disorders and troubled sleeping is on the rise.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to investigate the association between nutrients and female infertility. METHODS: A cross-sectional study on 18-45 years of age reproductive-age women was conducted using the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) for the periods 2013-2014 and 2015-2016. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between nutrients and female infertility. Subgroup analysis was applied to the body mass index (BMI). Results were summarised using an odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Of the total 1713 women, 204 women (11.91%) were infertile. The result demonstrated that higher intake of carbohydrate (OR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.24-0.86, p = 0.018), vitamin A (OR: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.24-0.80, p = 0.009), vitamin C (OR: 0.48, 95% CI: 0.26-0.88, p = 0.020), magnesium (OR: 0.36, 95% CI: 0.17-0.76, p = 0.009), iron (OR: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.23-0.82, p = 0.012), lycopene (OR: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.33-0.91, p = 0.022), and total folate (OR: 0.38, 95% CI: 0.20-0.70, p = 0.003) were associated with a lower risk of female infertility. The subgroup analysis also reported that intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C, and lycopene were related to a lower risk of female infertility among women with a BMI being 18.5-24.9 kg/m2. Among women with BMI > 24.9 kg/m2, high intakes of magnesium, iron and total folate were associated with a decreased risk of female infertility. CONCLUSIONS: The intake of several nutrients is associated with a decreased risk of female infertility. These findings provide insight into potentially modifiable lifestyle factors associated with female infertility.


Infertility is becoming a global challenge in both medical and social aspects. There is growing evidence of the importance of nutrition in reproduction in animal and human studies, suggesting a correlation between nutrition and female fertility. We observed that higher intakes of carbohydrates, vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, lycopene and total folate were associated with a lower risk of female infertility. This study helped increase awareness among health professionals and patients about the important link between nutrients and infertility, and educate women about the significance of a healthy lifestyle and diet.

Purpose: There has been an association between changes in body composition, fracture incidence, and age in previous studies. Telomere length (TL) has been proposed as a biomarker of aging. However, the relationship between body composition, fractures, and TL has rarely been studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the correlation between TL and body composition and fractures.Patients and methods: 20950 participants from the 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in the final analysis. In NHANES, body compositions were measured with DXA, and TL was determined with quantitative PCR. Correlation analysis of TL and body composition was conducted using multivariate weighted linear regression and logistic regression models. Results: The results showed that TL positively correlated with bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) in most body parts. However, BMD and BMC were negatively connected with TL in the upper limbs and skull. Fat content was negatively associated with TL, while muscle content was positively linked to TL. In addition, TL's trend analysis results were consistent with the regression model when transformed from a continuous to a classified variable. An increase in TL was associated with a higher incidence of wrist fractures, while a decrease in spine fractures. The above correlation also has a certain degree of sex specificity. Conclusion: Our study indicate that TL is associated with body composition as well as fractures, but further research is needed to confirm these contrasting associations in the skull, upper limbs, and wrists.
