ABSTRACT

A modified QuEChERS method was developed to determine multi-class pesticide and veterinary residues in aquatic products. Chitosan microspheres were conveniently synthesized and utilized as the cleanup adsorbent in the QuEChERS procedure, showcasing rapid filtration one-step pretreatment ability for the determination of drug multi-residues in aquatic products. Compared to conventional synthetic sorbents, chitosan microspheres not only have good purification performance, but also have renewable and degradable properties. This novel sorbent worked well in the simultaneous determination of 95 pesticides and veterinary drug residues in aquatic products after being combined with an improved one-step vortex oscillating cleanup method. We achieved recoveries ranging from 64.0% to 115.9% for target drugs in shrimp and fish matrix. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.5-1.0 and 1.0-2.0 µg kg-1, respectively. Notably, hydrocortisone was detected with considerable frequency and concentration in the tested samples, underscoring the necessity for stringent monitoring of this compound in aquatic products.

ABSTRACT

Antibiotic residues resulting from the misuse of veterinary antibiotics pose a serious threat to global food safety and the ecological environment. Regulating the use of antibiotics is currently a major concern; however, existing literature on this issue remains insufficient. Therefore, to advance research in this area, this study utilizes data from 988 questionnaires collected across 9 provinces in China and employs the 3SLS systematic estimation method. It constructs an analytical framework to explore the mechanisms through which policy advocacy (PA) influences regulating antibiotics use (RAU) among meat duck farmers. Specifically, the study examines two pathways: " PA - public opinion pressure perception (POPP) - RAU" and " PA - moral responsibility (MR) - RAU." Additionally, it explores the potential mechanisms through which PA impacts RAU among farmers. The results show that PA (Coef = 0.070, SE = 0.014) can promote RAU by increasing the level of POPP (Coef = 0.173, SE = 0.091). PA (Coef = 0.351, SE = 0.028) can also promote RAU by enhancing MR (Coef = 0.239, SE = 0.035). Meanwhile, this study introduces Internet use (IU) and reputational incentives (RI) as moderating variables to analyze their role in moderating the impact of PA on RAU. It was demonstrated that IU (Coef = 0.088, SE = 0.016) significantly enhances farmers' awareness of the value of RAU and amplifies the impact of PA on MR. However, IU (Coef = -0.017, SE = 0.008) was found to inhibit the effect of PA on POPP. RI fully satisfies farmers' need for " honor " and enhances the effectiveness of PA in promoting both POPP (Coef = 0.009, SE = 0.002) and MR (Coef = 0.058, SE = 0.004). Finally, the study proposes that the government expand PA channels, innovate methods, and combine online outreach with demonstrations to improve farmers' awareness of antibiotic use and address their reputational needs.

ABSTRACT

IMPORTANCE: Developing clinical skills is an essential element of veterinary education to ensure the competency of veterinary graduates. Although the Korean Veterinary Education Graduation Competencies were established in 2016, reflecting domestic needs and international trends in competency-based veterinary education, they have yet to be implemented in Korean veterinary education. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish the basic veterinary clinical skills required to ensure graduates of Korean veterinary universities have the day-one competency to independently perform their professional duties. METHODS: The Education Committee of the Korean Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, composed of veterinary school professors and an experienced veterinarian in the clinic, reviewed domestic and international veterinary education-related materials to define basic clinical skills. RESULTS: The Korean Veterinarian Entrustable Professional Activities (KVEPA) was introduced, followed by the subsequent development of 54 essential clinical skills based on the KVEPA. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The veterinary basic clinical skills established through this study can be used as a specific guide for clinical education in Korean veterinary school, and is expected to play an important role in meeting the needs of the educational sector of the veterinary education accreditation standards.

ABSTRACT

Neonicotinoids have been detected in farmland-associated birds and exposure to these insecticides has been linked to adverse effects. Even though neonicotinoids are mobile and persistent and have been detected in surface waters and aquatic invertebrates, there is a considerable lack of knowledge on their occurrence in waterbirds. Here we investigated the occurrence of seven neonicotinoids and some of their transformation products (imidacloprid, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, nitenpyram, 6-chloronicotinic acid, hydroxy-imidacloprid, imidacloprid-urea, imidacloprid-olefin, thiamethoxam-urea, thiacloprid-amide, acetamiprid-acetate, and acetamiprid-desmethyl) in blood plasma of 51 incubating female common goldeneyes (Bucephala clangula). We collected samples from five different regions from southern to northern Finland encompassing rural and urban settings in coastal and inland areas. Surprisingly, none of the targeted neonicotinoids was found above the limit of detection in any of the samples. As neonicotinoid concentrations in wild birds can be very low, a likely reason for the nil results is that the LODs were too high; this and other possible reasons for the lack of detection of neonicotinoids in the goldeneyes are discussed. Our results suggest that neonicotinoid exposure in their breeding areas is currently not of major concern to female goldeneyes in Finland. Even though this study did not find any immediate danger of neonicotinoids to goldeneyes, further studies including surface water, aquatic invertebrates, and other bird species could elucidate potential indirect food chain effects.

ABSTRACT

Widespread occurrence of two ectoparasiticide compounds in the aquatic environment, imidacloprid and fipronil, have prompted concerns about their potential environmental impacts. However, very little focus has been placed on water bodies in urban green spaces used for dog swimming. In this study, occurrence of both substances on Hampstead Heath, London, was compared in ponds with (n = 3) and without dog swimming activity (n = 3), as well as connecting streams above, between, and below these ponds (n = 6). Imidacloprid and fipronil were detected at main swimming points in dog swimming ponds at mean concentrations of 309 ±â€¯104 ng/L and 32 ±â€¯13 ng/L, respectively, indicating a high environmental risk in all samples. Measured concentrations in ponds not accessible for dog swimming were either below the limits of detection or limits of quantification for both chemicals. Across all ponds, there was a strong positive correlation between measured dog swimming activities and concentrations of imidacloprid (R2 = 0.91) and fipronil (R2 = 0.79). Some contamination was detected in connecting streams between ponds. A wider chemical analysis for the presence of urban waste water chemical residue signatures indicated minimal contamination, including in source waters. A survey of visitors who allow their dogs to swim in the sampled ponds confirmed frequent use of products containing imidacloprid and fipronil. In total, 86 % of 101 dog owners were unaware of the potential environmental impacts of products, and 94 % indicated that protecting nature would be an important consideration when selecting products. Besides the current practice of limiting dog access to ponds, information collected on product use and dog swimming practices identified additional opportunities to reduce contamination. We suggest that more cooperation between industry, regulators, veterinarians, green space managers, and the public can reduce risks to urban biodiversity while maintaining recreational benefits for dog owners and dogs.

ABSTRACT

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) causes ongoing economic losses to cattle industries, directly through reduced herd performance or indirectly through control program costs. ELISA assays, one of the most widely used techniques due to their ease of implementation, have been a valuable tool for mass surveillance and detection of BVDV. In this study, we developed a new indirect ELISA (rE2-ELISA) for serologic detection of BVDV. The assay considers three recombinant E2 protein subtypes as antigens, allowing serologic diagnosis of BVDV-1b (high prevalence worldwide), BVDV-1d and 1e (high prevalence in southern Chile) sub-genotypes. Recombinant E2 (rE2) proteins were successfully expressed in stably transfected CHO cells. Conditions for rE2 ELISAs were established after determining appropriate concentrations of antigen, blocking agent, secondary antibody, and serum dilutions to achieve maximum discrimination between positive and negative serum samples. The developed rE2-ELISA showed a sensitivity of 92.86% and a specificity of 98.33%. Clinical testing of 180 serum samples from herds in southern Chile showed high accuracy (kappa > 0.8) compared to the commercial BVDV Total Ab kit (IDEXX), with 95.37% positive and 87.5% negative predictive value. In addition, the rE2 ELISA has shown the capability to detect anti-BVDV antibodies from naturally infected animals with sub-genotypes 1b, 1e, or undetermined. These results indicate that the developed indirect ELISA could serve as a valid, and efficient alternative for identifying BVDV-infected animals, thus contributing to the success of disease control and eradication programs.

ABSTRACT

Continued investigation into the bacteria associated with non-domestic animals provides important information for recognizing normal flora, assessing the health status of these unique species of animals, and identifying new or emerging pathogens of concern. In this summary of novel taxa and taxonomic revisions, considerable additions have been made toward understanding fecal and mucosal flora in multiple wild animal species. In addition, novel pathogenic bacteria are discussed, including multiple Chlamydia spp. causing disease in a hawk and crocodile, two Corynebacterium spp. causing oral lesions in penguins and a lesser-known genus, Mergibacter within Family Pasteurellaceae, causing disease in multiple wild bird species. Finally, a few revisions to bacteria isolated from normal non-domestic animal body sites are mentioned.

ABSTRACT

One of the major concerns for animal health is the pollution of food and medicines given to animals by non-essential and toxic elements, which also poses a risk to human health via the food chain. The essential (Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) and non-essential elements (Li, Ti, V, Ga, Ag, Cd, In, Ba, Bi, Th, and U) were monitored using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredients (V APIs). Samples were divided into four groups including antibiotic (14 samples), anthelmintic (7 samples), anticoccidial (5 samples), and externally used (5 samples). The results of the antibiotic group had the highest concentrations of most elements. The concentrations of the targeted elements were below the permissible limits as recommended by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). The target hazard quotient (THQ) and the total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) were applied to evaluate the animal health risk associated with the exposure of the target elements in V API samples; the results showed that elements do not pose any risk to animals in all samples as indicated by THQ values less than 1. Validation parameters performed in this study showed good accuracy and validity of the ICP-MS analysis method, with good linearity (R2 ˃ 0.990), and the relative standard deviations (%RSD) were < 4% for all target elements. Analysis of variance (ANOVA-one way) was used to compare the means of veterinary drug groups for all targeted elements. The results showed that all elements have p-values < 0.05 except 52Cr and 54Fe.

Introduction: This study examined the efficacy of a therapy based on a combination of Platelet Rich Plasma and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles in a severe clinical case involving a young Rottweiler with a complex spiral fracture of the tibia. Method: Following a worsening of the lesion after traditional surgical intervention, the subject was treated with the combined therapy. X-rays were taken at the following stages: immediately post-surgery, four weeks post-surgery, and 10 days post-treatment. Fracture gap and callus density measurements were obtained using ImageJ analysis, allowing for a detailed quantitative assessment of bone regeneration over time. Results: Post-operative radiographs indicated a clinical worsening of the fracture, revealing an increased fracture gap due to bone loss. However, significant improvements were observed ten days following the treatment, with a marked reduction in fracture gaps and increased callus density. These results demonstrated a notable acceleration in bone healing and callus formation compared to typical recovery times for similar lesions. Conclusion: The method showed potential for enhancing osteogenic regeneration, facilitating faster healing of serious orthopedic injuries compared to traditional methods.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess cat guardians' concern levels and veterinary care decisions pertaining to behaviors that might signify pain before and after receiving brief pain-related educational information. The secondary aims were to evaluate cat guardians' perceptions of the usefulness of a modified version of the Colorado State University Feline Acute Pain Scale (CSU-FAPS) in identifying their cat's pain level, determining if they should take their cat to the veterinarian and describing their cat's pain to their veterinarian. METHODS: Participants were recruited through Prolific. An electronic survey was created in Qualtrics and distributed via a link offered in Prolific. RESULTS: A total of 362 surveys were completed by participants who resided in the USA and were the primary caretaker of at least one cat. Significant differences between participants' concern levels before and after pain-related educational information were found for two of the three scenarios. Significant differences were found between participants' veterinary-related behavior choices before and after pain-related educational information for all three scenarios. The most common reasons for not seeking immediate veterinary care included elements related to cost and stress for guardian and cat during veterinary visits. The majority of participants reported finding the CSU-FAPS useful for identifying their cat's pain level (90%), determining if they should take their cat to the veterinarian (86%) and describing their cat's pain to their veterinarian (92%). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Guardians' interpretations of and subsequent actions to behaviors that might suggest pain carry great implications for feline health and wellbeing. After exposure to brief pain-related educational material, guardians in our study reported significant increases in stated concern related to their cat's change in behavior and intention to seek veterinary care. These findings suggest that even very brief pain-related educational material can have a positive impact on cat guardians' perceptions of feline behavior changes and increase the possibility they obtain appropriate veterinary care.


In this study, researchers wanted to understand how cat guardians perceive and respond to behaviors that might indicate their cat is in pain. They also wanted to see if providing cat guardians with educational information about recognizing pain would change their behavior. They used an online survey to gather information from 362 cat guardians in the USA. They found that after receiving educational information about recognizing pain in cats, the cat guardians showed more concern about their cat's behavior changes and were more likely to consider taking their cat to the veterinarian. The study also assessed the Feline Acute Pain Scale. Most participants found this tool helpful for identifying their cat's pain level, deciding whether to go to the veterinarian and describing their cat's pain to the veterinarian. Overall, the study suggests that providing even brief education about recognizing pain in cats can lead to better care for cats by their guardians.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to develop a real-time PCR assay with a TaqMan® probe that detects a species-specific part of the 16S rDNA gene of Ehrlichia canis. Canine blood samples (n = 207), collected and tested by a conventional PCR assay within a study conducted by De Salvo et al., were simultaneously analyzed with the novel designed real-time PCR, and the results of both assays were compared. The agreement between the two methods was 97.6 % with a kappa value of 0.92186. Hereby, the standard error was 0.034416 and the 95 % confidence interval from 0.8544 to 0.98931. While the conventional PCR assay showed false negative results (2.42 %; 5/207), the real-time PCR assays showed a specificity of 100 %. The results of the current study showed that the developed assay presents sensitivity and specificity for the detection of E. canis in blood samples, adding a new tool for the diagnosis of this pathogen.

ABSTRACT

Attracting and sustaining investment in Veterinary Services and animal health programmes from national government budgets, development aid and grants, and philanthropic donors requires economic rationale using relevant, reliable and validated analytical approaches. The complex interwoven relationships between animal health, livestock husbandry systems, national food security, global health security and environmental sustainability emphasise the importance of improving data governance and stewardship and applying economic analysis to understand animal disease burdens. These efforts should enable prioritised investment of limited resources and effective monitoring of the impact of programmes over time. Data governance and stewardship capacities are fundamental to development, implementation and performance monitoring of evidence-based policies in animal health. There are challenges in data availability for national and subnational livestock populations in different sectors, for disease incidence and prevalence, and for animal health expenditure in support of optimised allocation of scarce resources, be they finance, land, labour, or management attention and policy focus. Animal health data systems governance and stewardship and economic analysis are core skills for Veterinary Services in developing and applying evidence-based policy, but capability probably varies among World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Members. The WOAH Performance of Veterinary Services programme has several critical competencies that are relevant to economics of animal health and to data governance and stewardship, but these have not yet been targeted for coordinated capacity development. Implementation of publicâ€"private partnership approaches for animal health programmes creates increasing expectations of robust data and methods for prioritisation, options analysis, and assessing impacts and costs. Experience and examples from national systems in New Zealand, Australia, Ethiopia and Indonesia illustrate current challenges associated with prioritisation of animal health programmes using economic analysis. The Global Burden of Animal Diseases programme intends to support WOAH Members and partners to develop capacities for and standardise approaches to economic analysis and prioritisation in animal health programmes.


Les investissements dans les Services vétérinaires et dans les programmes de santé animale à partir des budgets publics nationaux, des aides et subventions au développement et des fonds alloués par des donateurs philanthropiques peuvent être encouragés et pérennisés au moyen d'une argumentation économique solide fondée sur des méthodes analytiques pertinentes, fiables et validées. La complexité et l'imbrication des relations entre la santé animale, les systèmes d'élevage, la sécurité de l'approvisionnement alimentaire à l'échelle nationale, la sécurité sanitaire mondiale et la durabilité environnementale imposent d'améliorer la gouvernance et la gestion des données et de recourir à des analyses économiques pour mieux comprendre l'impact des maladies animales. Ces efforts devraient permettre de définir les investissements prioritaires dans un contexte de ressources limitées et d'assurer un suivi efficace de l'impact des programmes dans le temps. L'existence de capacités de gouvernance et de gestion des données est donc une condition essentielle pour concevoir et mettre en oeuvre des politiques de santé animale fondées sur des données factuelles et pour suivre leurs performances. Les données disponibles sur les populations d'animaux d'élevage des différentes filières aux niveaux national ou infranational, sur l'incidence et la prévalence des maladies ou sur les dépenses de santé animale sont parfois insuffisantes pour étayer une utilisation optimale de ressources limitées, qu'il s'agisse de moyens financiers, des terres, de la main-d'oeuvre, voire des efforts de gestion ou de la volonté politique. La gouvernance et la gestion des systèmes de données de santé animale et la conduite d'analyses économiques sont des compétences cruciales des Services vétérinaires, que ceux-ci mobilisent pour concevoir et mettre en oeuvre des politiques fondées sur des données factuelles ; il est néanmoins peu probable que ces capacités soient d'un niveau homogène parmi tous les Membres de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé animale (OMSA). Le Processus d'évaluation de la Performance des Services vétérinaires mis en place par l'OMSA définit un certain nombre de compétences critiques dans le domaine de l'économie de la santé animale et de la gouvernance et gestion des données, mais ces compétences n'ont pas encore été intégrées dans un effort coordonné de renforcement des capacités. Les stratégies consistant à confier la mise en oeuvre de programmes de santé animale à des partenariats public-privé suscitent des besoins accrus en données et en méthodes robustes pour l'établissement des priorités, l'analyse des options et l'évaluation des impacts et des coûts. Les auteurs mentionnent les expériences et exemples de systèmes nationaux en Nouvelle-Zélande, en Australie, en Ethiopie et en Indonésie pour illustrer les enjeux actuels liés à l'utilisation des analyses économiques pour définir les priorités des programmes de santé animale. Las complejas relaciones entre la sanidad animal, los sistemas de ganadería, la seguridad alimentaria nacional, la seguridad sanitaria mundial y la sostenibilidad ambiental ponen de relieve la importancia de mejorar la gobernanza y la gestión de datos y de aplicar el análisis económico para comprender el impacto de las enfermedades animales. Estos esfuerzos deberían permitir establecer prioridades para la inversión de los limitados recursos y realizar un seguimiento eficaz de las repercusiones de los programas a lo largo del tiempo. Las capacidades de gobernanza y gestión de datos son fundamentales para el desarrollo y la implementación de políticas de sanidad animal con una base empírica y para el seguimiento de sus resultados. Existen dificultades en cuanto a la disponibilidad de datos sobre las cabañas ganaderas nacionales y subnacionales de los distintos sectores, la incidencia y prevalencia de las enfermedades y el gasto en sanidad animal que plantean problemas a la hora de optimizar la asignación de unos recursos que son escasos, ya sean los recursos financieros, las tierras, la mano de obra o la atención a la gestión y la orientación de las políticas. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Excessive use of veterinary drugs causes severely environmental pollution and agricultural pollution, and poses great threat to human health. A simple method for the rapid, highly sensitive, and on-site monitoring of veterinary drug residues in complex samples remains lacking. RESULTS: In this study, we propose a catalytically enhanced colorimetric lateral flow immunoassay (LFA) based on a novel core-satellite-structured magnetic nanozyme (Fe-Au@Pt) that can simultaneously and quantitatively detect three common veterinary drugs, namely, gentamicin (GM), streptomycin (STR), and clenbuterol (CLE), within a short testing time (<30 min). The Fe-Au@Pt nanozyme was simply prepared through the self-assembly of numerous Au@Pt nanoparticles on a large Fe3O4 core via electrostatic adhesion, which exhibited the advantages of high peroxidase-like activity, strong magnetic responsiveness, and multiple catalytic sites. Under the dual-signal amplification effect of magnetic enrichment and catalytic enhancement, the proposed nanozyme-LFA allowed the multiplex detection of STR, CLE, and GM with detection limits of 10.1, 6.3, and 1.1 pg/mL, respectively. SIGNIFICANCE: The developed Fe-Au@Pt-LFA achieves direct, simultaneous, and accurate detection of three target drugs in food samples (honey, milk, and pork). The proposed assay shows great potential for application in the real-time monitoring of small-molecule pollutants in complex environment.

For those who consider themselves further along their allyship journey, there is material to encourage more effective or strategic allyship activities. Readers are encouraged to reflect on the different ways they can practice allyship within their own organizations. For leadership and management, we outline why allyship is important in veterinary workplaces and set out some key organization changes that can build inclusive workplaces through allyship.

Veterinary medicine is one of the least diverse professions in terms of race and ethnicity. Inclusive mentorship has the potential to increase representation and retention of BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) individuals and individuals with other marginalized identities in the field. Inclusive mentorship benefits not only the mentors and mentees but also the veterinary profession and the communities we serve. It is critical to incorporate inclusion principles throughout the mentoring relationship, starting with creating an inclusive environment and considering inclusion in program design and mentor training. Inclusion is an ongoing process that requires dedication and maintenance.

The concept of equity recognizes historical and current barriers and promotes thriving for veterinary teams and people and animals in the community. Veterinary medicine lacks sociodemographic diversity; veterinarians and other team members who identify with systemically excluded groups offer valuable contributions but are at risk of workplace discrimination. Client families who face barriers for financial and other reasons are at risk of poor animal health and welfare outcomes, including separation from their animals. This article is part one of 2 articles reviewing how the concept of equity applies and could transform well-being in companion animal veterinary practice in North America.

ABSTRACT

In the field of veterinary medicine, the detection of parasite eggs in the fecal samples of livestock animals represents one of the most challenging tasks, since their spread and diffusion may lead to severe clinical disease. Nowadays, the scanning procedure is typically performed by physicians with professional microscopes and requires a significant amount of time, domain knowledge, and resources. The Kubic FLOTAC Microscope (KFM) is a compact, low-cost, portable digital microscope that can autonomously analyze fecal specimens for parasites and hosts in both field and laboratory settings. It has been shown to acquire images that are comparable to those obtained with traditional optical microscopes, and it can complete the scanning and imaging process in just a few minutes, freeing up the operator's time for other tasks. To promote research in this area, the first AI-KFM challenge was organized, which focused on the detection of gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) in cattle using RGB images. The challenge aimed to provide a standardized experimental protocol with a large number of samples collected in a well-known environment and a set of scores for the approaches submitted by the competitors. This paper describes the process of generating and structuring the challenge dataset and the approaches submitted by the competitors, as well as the lessons learned throughout this journey.

Introduction: Canine lymphoma (cL) is one of the most frequent cancers in dogs. The T-cell lymphoma (TcL) is not the most common phenotype but presents an aggressive behavior. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), are small, single-stranded, non-coding RNA molecules which can circulate freely in blood or be associated with extracellular vesicles (EVs). The dysregulation of certain miRNAs has been identified in numerous types of human cancers and they have been largely investigated as possible tumors biomarkers in human medicine, while research in veterinary oncology is still scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the expression patterns of free circulating and EV-associated miRNAs in dogs with T-cell lymhoma (TcL) and healthy dogs. Methods: Eight dogs with TcL were selected as the lymphoma group (LG) and eight dogs were included as controls (Ctrl). Plasma samples were collected at the time of the diagnosis and EVs isolated with ultracentrifugation. miRNAs were extracted from both the circulating EVs and the plasma supernatant, obtaining EV-associated and free-miRNAs. Quantitative real-time PCR was performed to analyze the expression of 88 target miRNAs. Results: Ten and seven differentially expressed miRNAs between LG and Ctrl were detected in EV-associated and free-miRNAs, respectively. Among EV-associated and free-miRNAs, only has-miR-222-3p was overexpressed in both conditions. Discussion: All the differentially expressed miRNAs detected in this study, have been already described as dysregulated in other human or canine cancers. The EV-associated miRNAs, which appear to be more stable and better conserved than free-miRNAs, could be investigated in further larger studies to better assess their use as possible biomarkers for TcL.

Four aquatic landscape plants and three veterinary antibiotics were selected to construct a hydroponic test system to analyze the tolerance, removal effect and mechanism of antibiotics. The results indicated that antibiotic concentrations from 0 to 100 µg·L-1 promoted plant heights and leaf chlorophyll contents, while antibiotics at concentrations > 100 µg·L-1 had inhibitory effects. The ability of different plants to remove antibiotics was Acorus calamus L. > Ceratophyllum demersum L. > Thalia dealbata Fraser > Nuphar pumila (Timm) DC. The plants with the best removal of norfloxacin, sulfadimethoxine and chlortetracycline were Ceratophyllum demersum L., Acorus calamus L. and Acorus calamus L. after 12 d of hydroponic cultivation using 100 µg·L-1 antibiotics, with removal rates of 66.6%, 63.0% and 63.2%, respectively. The accumulation of antibiotics in different plant tissues was root > stem > leaf and the accumulation increased with incubation time. The diversity of plant root biofilm microorganisms decreased with increasing treatment concentrations of antibiotics, while the abundance of dominant genera (Aeromonas, Bacillus, Lysinibacillus, Providencia, and Staphylococcus) showed an increasing trend. The findings imply that the antibiotic uptake by plants and the dynamics of the rhizosphere microbial community combine to promote antibiotic removal.


Different plants have different removal capacities for pollutants, and optimal plant selection is critical for antibiotic removal in phytoremediation and constructed wetland projects. Currently, although there are a small number of preliminary studies on the effect and mechanism of plant removal of antibiotics from wastewater, there is a lack of systematic understanding of the antibiotic removal capacity, uptake and accumulation characteristics, and possible coupling of microbial communities in the root zone of common aquatic landscape plants. In this study, common veterinary antibiotics (chlortetracycline, sulfadimethoxine, and norfloxacin) were selected as pollutants based on the use of veterinary medicines in farms, and common aquatic landscape plants (Acorus calamus L., Thalia dealbata Fraser, Ceratophyllum demersum L., and Nuphar pumila (Timm) DC.) were selected for hydroponic tests under different concentration treatments of antibiotics. We analyzed the tolerance, removal effect, uptake and accumulation characteristics of these plants to antibiotics in hydroponic solution and the evolutionary pattern of the microbial community in the root zone, in order to improve the understanding of the phytoremediation mechanism of antibiotics in aquatic environments. Meanwhile, this study searched for aquatic landscape plants with superior removal capacity for antibiotics, which was expected to provide a reference for phytoremediation and constructed wetland projects.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of leishmaniasis in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in the state of Sergipe, Brazil, and to evaluate the associated clinical signs. METHODS: A total of 31 rabbits from urban and rural areas were clinically examined using cytological, immunological, and serological tests. Blood and cytological samples were collected and analysed for the presence of Leishmania parasites and antibodies. Immunochromatographic tests were used to screen for anti-Leishmania antibodies, and cytological analysis of skin lesions was performed to detect the presence of Leishmania amastigotes. RESULTS: Of the rabbits tested, 19.35% were reactive in the anti-Leishmania antibody screening, and 3.33% tested positive for Leishmania amastigotes in skin lesion cytology. Clinical signs included cachexia, lymphadenomegaly, dehydration, apathy, dermatitis, ophthalmopathy, and alopecia. Cytological analysis revealed pyogranulomatous inflammation with Leishmania amastigotes present. The findings suggest that leishmaniasis is present among domestic rabbits in this region CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the presence of leishmaniasis in domestic rabbits in the Northeast of Brazil. The findings underline the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in preventing the spread of the disease, and highlight the need for further research into the role of rabbits as potential reservoirs of Leishmania.
