ABSTRACT

Aerosol emission by wind erosion in the arid and semi-arid areas of the world, is of environmental and health significance. Different methods have been used to mitigate aerosol emission among which the biological methods may be the most efficient ones. Although previously investigated, more research is essential to determine how the use of exopolysaccharide (biocrust)-producing cyanobacteria may affect soil physical properties. The objective was to investigate the effects of the cyanobacteria, Microcoleus vaginatus ATHK43 (identified and registered by the NCBI accession number MW433686), on soil physical properties of a sandy soil 15, 30, 60, and 90 d after inoculation. The effects of cyanobacterial biocrust on soil properties including shear strength, soil resistance, aggregate stability (mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD)), and wind erosion were determined in trays using a wind tunnel. Cyanobacterial inoculation significantly increased MWD (0-1 cm depth, from 0.12 mm to 0.47 mm) and GMD (from 0.3 to 0.5 mm) after a period of 90 d. Biocrust production significantly decreased soil erosion from 55.7 kgm- 2 to 0.3 kgm- 2 (wind rate of 50 kmh- 1), and from 116.42 kgm- 2 to 0.6 kgm- 2 (wind rate of 90 kmh- 1) after 90 d. In conclusion, cyanobacterial biocrust can significantly improve soil physical properties in different parts of the world including the deserts, and reduce aerosol emission by mitigating the destructive effects of wind erosion on soil physical properties.

ABSTRACT

In this study, native ureolytic bacteria were isolated from copper tailings soils to perform microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) tests and evaluate their potential for biocement formation and their contribution to reduce the dispersion of particulate matter into the environment from tailings containing potentially toxic elements. It was possible to isolate a total of 46 bacteria; among them only three showed ureolytic activity: Priestia megaterium T130-1, Paenibacillus sp. T130-13 and Staphylococcus sp. T130-14. Biocement cores were made by mixing tailings with the isolated bacteria in presence of urea, resulting similar to those obtained with Sporosarcina pasteurii and Bacillus subtilis used as positive control. Indeed, XRD analysis conducted on biocement showed the presence of microcline (B. subtilis 17%; P. megaterium 11. 9%), clinochlore (S. pasteurii, 6.9%) and magnesiumhornblende (Paenibacillus sp. 17.8%; P. megaterium 14.6%); all these compounds were not initially present in the tailings soils. Moreover the presence of calcite (control 0.828%; Paenibacillus sp. 5.4%) and hematite (control 0.989%; B. subtilis 6.4%) was also significant unlike the untreated control. The development of biofilms containing abundant amount of Ca, C, and O on microscopic soil particles was evidenced by means of FE-SEM-EDX and XRD. Wind tunnel tests were carried out to investigate the resistance of biocement samples, accounted for a mass loss five holds lower than the control, i.e., the rate of wind erosion in the control corresponded to 82 g/m2h while for the biocement treated with Paenibacillus sp. it corresponded to only 16.371 g/m2h. Finally, in compression tests, the biocement samples prepared with P. megaterium (28.578 psi) and Paenibacillus sp. (28.404 psi) showed values similar to those obtained with S. pasteurii (27.102 psi), but significantly higher if compared to the control (15.427 psi), thus improving the compression resistance capacity of the samples by 85.2% and 84.1% with respect to the control. According to the results obtained, the biocement samples generated with the native strains showed improvements in the mechanical properties of the soil supporting them as potential candidates in applications for the stabilization of mining liabilities in open environments using bioaugmentation strategies with native strains isolated from the same mine tailing.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the design, implementation, and validation of an on-blade sensor system for remote vibration measurement for low-capacity wind turbines. The autonomous sensor system was deployed on three wind turbines, with one of them operating in harsh weather conditions in the far south of Chile. The system recorded the acceleration response of the blades in the flapwise and edgewise directions, data that could be used for extracting the dynamic characteristics of the blades, information useful for damage diagnosis and prognosis. The proposed sensor system demonstrated reliable data acquisition and transmission from wind turbines in remote locations, proving the ability to create a fully autonomous system capable of recording data for monitoring and evaluating the state of health of wind turbine blades for extended periods without human intervention. The data collected by the sensor system presented in this study can serve as a foundation for developing vibration-based strategies for real-time structural health monitoring.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to propose bioclimatic zoning to classify human thermal comfort and discomfort in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil; both historical and future scenarios are considered. Thus, historical series (1961 to 2017) of the effective temperature index as a function of the wind (ETW) were obtained as a function of the monthly average values of the minimum, mean, and maximum dry-bulb air temperatures (tdb,min, tdb,mean, and tdb,max, respectively), in addition to the mean relative humidity ([Formula: see text], %) and mean wind speed ([Formula: see text], m s -1). The data were obtained from 34 weather stations and subjected to trend analysis by using the nonparametric Mann-Kendall test, thus enabling the simulation of future scenarios (for 2028 and 2038). Then, to define the thermal ranges of the bioclimatic zoning, maps of ETWmin, ETWmean, and ETWmax were created from geostatistical analysis. Overall, the results show warming trends for the upcoming years in Minas Gerais municipalities. All climatic seasons showed an increase in the frequency of new classifications in the upper adjacent classes, which indicates climate warming. Therefore, when considering future scenarios for the autumn and winter seasons, attention should be given to changes in predicted thermal sensation, especially in the Central Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte Metropolitan, South/Southwest Minas, Campo das Vertentes, and Zona da Mata.

ABSTRACT

Background: Operation of wind turbines has resulted in collision fatalities for several bat species, and one proven method to reduce these fatalities is to limit wind turbine blade rotation (i.e., curtail turbines) when fatalities are expected to be highest. Implementation of curtailment can potentially be optimized by targeting times when females are most at risk, as the proportion of females limits the growth and stability of many bat populations. The Brazilian free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is the most common bat fatality at wind energy facilities in California and Texas, and yet there are few available data on the sex ratios of the carcasses that are found. Understanding the sex ratios of fatalities in California and Texas could aid in planning population conservation strategies such as informed curtailment. Methods: We used PCR to determine the sex of bat carcasses collected from wind energy facilities during post-construction monitoring (PCM) studies in California and Texas. In California, we received samples from two locations within the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area in Alameda County: Golden Hills (GH) (n = 212) and Golden Hills North (GHN) (n = 312). In Texas, we received samples from three wind energy facilities: Los Mirasoles (LM) (Hidalgo County and Starr County) (n = 252), Los Vientos (LV) (Starr County) (n = 568), and Wind Farm A (WFA) (San Patricio County and Bee County) (n = 393). Results: In California, the sex ratios of fatalities did not differ from 50:50, and the sex ratio remained stable over the survey years, but the seasonal timing of peak fatalities was inconsistent. In 2017 and 2018, fatalities peaked between September and October, whereas in 2019 and 2020 fatalities peaked between May and June. In Texas, sex ratios of fatalities varied between locations, with Los Vientos being female-skewed and Wind Farm A being male-skewed. The sex ratio of fatalities was also inconsistent over time. Lastly, for each location in Texas with multiple years studied, we observed a decrease in the proportion of female fatalities over time. Discussion: We observed unexpected variation in the seasonal timing of peak fatalities in California and differences in the sex ratio of fatalities across time and facility location in Texas. In Texas, proximity to different roost types (bridge or cave) likely influenced the sex ratio of fatalities at wind energy facilities. Due to the inconsistencies in the timing of peak female fatalities, we were unable to determine an optimum curtailment period; however, there may be location-specific trends that warrant future investigation. More research should be done over the entirety of the bat active season to better understand these trends in Texas. In addition, standardization of PCM studies could assist future research efforts, enhance current monitoring efforts, and facilitate research on post-construction monitoring studies.

ABSTRACT

Oceanic energy, such as offshore wind energy and various marine energy sources, holds significant potential for generating green hydrogen through water electrolysis. Offshore-generated hydrogen has the potential to be transported through standard pipelines and stored in diverse forms. This aids in mitigating the variability of renewable energy sources in power generation and, consequently, holds the capacity to reshape the framework of electrical systems. This research provides a comprehensive review of the existing state of investigation and technological advancement in the domain of offshore wind energy and other marine energy sources for generating green hydrogen. The primary focus is on technical, economic, and environmental issues. The technology's optimal features have been pinpointed to achieve the utmost capacity for hydrogen production, providing insights for potential enhancements that can propel research and development efforts forward. The objective of this study is to furnish valuable information to energy companies by presenting multiple avenues for technological progress. Concurrently, it strives to expand its technical and economic outlook within the clean fuel energy sector. This analysis delivers insights into the best operating conditions for an offshore wind farm, the most suitable electrolyzer for marine environments and the most economical storage medium. The green hydrogen production process from marine systems has been found to be feasible and to possess a reduced ecological footprint compared to grey hydrogen production.

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: realizar uma revisão integrativa a respeito da função pulmonar e da força muscular respiratória nos músicos de instrumentos de sopro. A relação da função respiratória com a utilização de instrumentos musicais de sopro é uma área do conhecimento ainda pouco explorada. Métodos: Realizada a revisão bibliográfica nas bases de dados MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, PeDro, BVS, Scopus, Web of Science e SciELO, através da combinação das palavras-chave "respiratory function test", "wind instrument", musician, "pulmonary ventilation" e "Lung Function Test". Resultados: Inicialmente foram encontrados 108 artigos, sendo que destes foram selecionados 11, totalizando 596 músicos instrumentistas de sopro, que fizeram parte dos grupos de estudo. Na maioria dos estudos os músicos apresentaram valores menores do volume expirado no primeiro segundo (VEF1) e da capacidade vital forçada (CVF) na espirometria que o grupo controle. No entanto, sem diferença quanto a relação VEF1/CVF. Assim como não há diferença na força muscular respiratória ou relação com doenças respiratórias. Conclusão: Os estudos atuais a respeito da consequência do instrumento de sopro em indivíduos não são capazes de evidenciar impactos positivos ou negativos na saúde respiratória desta população.


Objective: To conduct an integrative review of lung function and respiratory muscle strength in wind instrument musicians. The relationship between respiratory function and the use of wind musical instruments is an area of knowledge that has not been extensively explored. Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out in the MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, PeDro, BVS, Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO databases by combining the keywords "respiratory function test", "wind instrument", musician, "pulmonary ventilation" and "Lung Function Test". Results: Initially, 108 articles were found, of which 11 were selected, totaling 596 wind instrumentalists who were part of the study groups. In most studies, musicians showed lower values of expired volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) in spirometry than in the control group. However, there was no difference regarding the FEV1/FVC ratio, just as there was no difference in respiratory muscle strength or relationship with respiratory diseases. Conclusion: Current studies regarding the effect of wind instruments on individuals are unable to show positive or negative impacts on the respiratory health of this population.

ABSTRACT

Currently, renewable energies, including wind energy, have been experiencing significant growth. Wind energy is transformed into electric energy through the use of wind turbines (WTs), which are located outdoors, making them susceptible to harsh weather conditions. These conditions can cause different types of damage to WTs, degrading their lifetime and efficiency, and, consequently, raising their operating costs. Therefore, condition monitoring and the detection of early damages are crucial. One of the failures that can occur in WTs is the occurrence of cracks in their blades. These cracks can lead to the further deterioration of the blade if they are not detected in time, resulting in increased repair costs. To effectively schedule maintenance, it is necessary not only to detect the presence of a crack, but also to assess its level of severity. This work studies the vibration signals caused by cracks in a WT blade, for which four conditions (healthy, light, intermediate, and severe cracks) are analyzed under three wind velocities. In general, as the proposed method is based on machine learning, the vibration signal analysis consists of three stages. Firstly, for feature extraction, statistical and harmonic indices are obtained; then, the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used for the feature selection stage; and, finally, the k-nearest neighbors algorithm is used for automatic classification. Neural networks, decision trees, and support vector machines are also used for comparison purposes. Promising results are obtained with an accuracy higher than 99.5%.

ABSTRACT

This study proposes a novel test method and corresponding procedure to evaluate how coconut fibres affect crack propagation rates resulting from plastic shrinkage during the accelerated drying of concrete slabs. The experiment employed concrete plate specimens, which were used to simulate slab structural elements with a surface dimension notably greater than their thickness. These slabs were reinforced with coconut fibre with 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% fibre content. A wind tunnel was designed to simulate two significant climate parameters (wind speed and air temperature), which could impact the cracking behaviour of surface elements. The proposed wind tunnel allowed air temperature to be controlled alongside wind speed while monitoring moisture loss and the cracking propagation process. During testing, a photographic recording method was used to evaluate cracking behaviour, with the total crack length serving as a parameter to assess the impact of fibre content on the crack propagation of slab surfaces. Additionally, crack depth was measured using ultrasound equipment. The results indicate that the proposed test method was appropriate for future research, allowing for the evaluation of the effect of natural fibres on the plastic shrinkage behaviour of surface elements under controlled environmental conditions. Based on initial studies and the results obtained through the proposed test method, concrete containing 0.75% fibre content exhibited significantly reduced crack propagation on slab surfaces, as well as a reduction in the crack depth caused by plastic shrinkage during the early age of the concrete.

ABSTRACT

Novelty detection is a statistical method that verifies new or unknown data, determines whether these data are inliers (within the norm) or outliers (outside the norm), and can be used, for example, in developing classification strategies in machine learning systems for industrial applications. To this end, two types of energy that have evolved over time are solar photovoltaic and wind power generation. Some organizations around the world have developed energy quality standards to avoid known electric disturbances; however, their detection is still a challenge. In this work, several techniques for novelty detection are implemented to detect different electric anomalies (disturbances), which are k-nearest neighbors, Gaussian mixture models, one-class support vector machines, self-organizing maps, stacked autoencoders, and isolation forests. These techniques are applied to signals from real power quality environments of renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaic and wind power generation. The power disturbances that will be analyzed are considered in the standard IEEE-1159, such as sag, oscillatory transient, flicker, and a condition outside the standard attributed to meteorological conditions. The contribution of the work consists of the development of a methodology based on six techniques for novelty detection of power disturbances, under known and unknown conditions, over real signals in the power quality assessment. The merit of the methodology is a set of techniques that allow to obtain the best performance of each one under different conditions, which constitutes an important contribution to the renewable energy systems.

ABSTRACT

The USA recently announced it is planning on deploying 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 (national goal for offshore wind). Part of this development will be in the Gulf of Mexico, which has both wind potential and pre-existing oil and gas pipelines, only a portion of which is currently being used. Examining whether these assets can be used to economically transport power back from future Gulf wind farms should be a first step for developers. The question of whether laying new high-voltage direct current submarine cable versus repurposing pipeline to transport wind power will be examined. This paper looks at the hydrogen market and its use to transport wind power, what it would take to retrofit pipeline to carry hydrogen, a cost analysis given available data, and a look at potential policy support. There is a need to assess pipelines individually; however, retrofitting existing infrastructure should be considered an alternative to laying new submarine transmission cables. Additionally, alleviating the issue of oil and gas stranded assets through pipeline reuse may provide political support in hastening the energy transition.

ABSTRACT

Our world needs to develop clean energy to reach the target of carbon peak and carbon neutralization. As one of clean energy, wind energy should contribute to energy conservation and emission reduction. Wind power generation is an important field of wind energy application. However, the fluctuation and intermittency of wind can affect the safety of power system. Therefore, prediction of wind power accurately for wind power safety, dispatching, and power grid development is significant. This paper proposes a prediction model of wind power, and predicts the wind power of two wind farms. For the complex wind speed series, the variational modal decomposition (VMD) method is used to reduce its volatility before prediction. And this paper presents an improved method to improve the prediction efficiency when least square support vector machine (LSSVM) predicts stationary series. The prediction result shows that the proposed model improves the prediction of wind power effectively, provides an effective method for wind farm to predict the wind power, and makes contributions to reducing carbon emissions and environmental protection.

In this research, the Volumetric Median Diameters (VMDs), Relative Span (RS), percentage of droplets with a diameter smaller than 100 µm (V100), and percentage ofdrift (% drift) of four droplet classes (Fine, Medium, Coarse, and Very Coarse) were analyzedin two spray volumes (77 L.ha-1and 144 L.ha-1) employinga tank-mix of atrazine and nicosulfuron herbicides (2500 + 15 gaiha-1), usingParticle/Droplet Imaging Analyze (PDIA) and wind tunnel techniques. The experiments were performed under Completely Randomized Design, in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme (droplet classes × sprayvolumes). Data underwent analysis of variance and Tukey's test at 5%, and the correlation between variables was computedconsidering Pearson's coefficient at 1% and 5%. The VMD of all droplet classes was considerably distinct in the two spray volumes. In both application spray volumes, the minimum VMD for the Coarsedropletclass classification was not attained. The highest means of RS were detectedin the spray volume of 77 L.ha-1. All treatments demonstratedsignificant differences in the analysis of V100 and % drift, with the highest means observed in the Fine droplet (144 L.ha-1) and Medium (77 L.ha-1). A negative correlation existed between VMD × V100 and VMD × % drift and a positive correlation between V100 × % drift in the two spray volumes. RS was negatively correlated with VMD and positively with V100 and % drift, in the spray volume of 77 L.ha-1. In the spray volume of 144 L.ha-1, the correlation between RSand VMD, V100, and % drift was insignificant.


Nesta pesquisa foram avaliados os Diâmetros Medianos Volumétricos (DMVs), Amplitude Relativa (AR), percentual de gotas com diâmetro menor que 100 µm (V100) e porcentagem de deriva (% deriva) de quatro classes de gota (Fina, Média, Grossa e Muito Grossa) em dois volumes de aplicação (77L.ha-1e 144L.ha-1) utilizando a mistura dos herbicidas atrazine e nicosulfuron (2500 + 15 gi.a. ha-1), utilizando os métodos de PDIA e de túnel de vento. Os experimentos foram realizados sob o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, no esquema fatorial 4 × 2 (classes de gota × volumes de aplicação), com cinco repetições. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e ao teste de Tukey a 5%, e a correlação entre as variáveis calculada considerando o coeficiente de Pearson a 1% e 5%. O DMV de todas as classes de gotas foi significativamente diferente nos dois volumes. O DMV mínimo para a classificação da classe de gota Grossa não foi atingido nos dois volumes de aplicação. As maiores médias de AR foram observadas no volume de 77 L.ha-1. Todos os tratamentos apresentaram diferenças significativas na análise de V100 e % deriva com as maiores médias observadas nas classes de gota Fina (144 L.ha-1) e Média (77 L.ha-1). Verificou-se correlação negativa entre DMV × V100 e DMV × % deriva e correlação positiva entreV100 × % deriva nos dois volumes. No volume de 77 L.ha-1 a AR correlacionou-se negativamente com o DMV e positivamente com V100 e % deriva. No volume de 144 L.ha-1 a correlação entre AR e DMV, V100 e % deriva não foi significativa.

Evapotranspiration (ET) is a key component of the hydrological cycle. Therefore, adequately estimating it is crucial to improving water resource planning and management.One of the most affordable methods of estimating ET is first to estimate reference crop evapotranspiration (ETo) and later associate it to crop and soil coefficients. The FAO Kc-ETo approach can be used only when ETo is computed with the FAO Penman-Monteith equation. However, low data availability may restict the equations used to estimate ETo. In this study, we assess and calibrate common methods used to estimate ETo under such conditions of limited data availability. Based on the annual calibration, the Makkink (NSE = 0.85) outperformed the Priestley-Taylor (NSE = 0.73), Hargreaves-Samani (NSE = 0.56), and Penman-Monteith temperature approach (NSE = 0.58). The seasonal calibration of parameters showed no significant improvement to the methods assessed (ΔNSE ≤ 0.01), except for the Priestley-Taylor (ΔNSE = 0.06). The performance of temperature-based equations was particularly limited due to the performance of the equation adopted to estimate global solar radiation. Thus, improving the representation of global solar radiation for limited data availability can also play a key role in improving ETo prediction.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract The Brazilian Caatinga has already lost extensive areas of original vegetation, thus it becomes imperative to perform fauna inventories within this region to fill geographical sampling gaps. Herein, we present a taxonomic list of the herpetofauna of a mountain chain located in the central zone of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) state whose region includes two priority areas for conservation of the Caatinga: "CA087 - Serra de Santana" in the west, and "CA078 - Nascente do Potengi" in the east. The sampling was carried out using methods of visual searching, pitfall traps with drift fences, specimens rescued during vegetation suppression activities in wind energy projects, occasional encounters, and third-party records. We recorded 19 amphibian species and 53 reptile species (23 lizards, 24 snakes, five amphisbaenians and one chelonian). About half of the recorded species have distributions entirely or mostly in the Caatinga. The mountain range sampled in this study harbors virtually all species found in nearby lowlands of the "sertaneja" depression of RN state, plus some relevant species with relictual distributions in the Caatinga, highlighting the importance of these highland areas for conservation of the Caatinga herpetofauna.


Resumo A Caatinga brasileira já perdeu extensas áreas de vegetação original, por isso torna-se importante realizar inventários de fauna nesta região para preencher lacunas geográficas de amostragem. Aqui, apresentamos uma lista taxonômica da herpetofauna de uma cadeia serrana localizada na zona central do estado do Rio Grande do Norte (RN) e cuja região inclui duas áreas prioritárias para conservação da Caatinga: "CA087 - Serra de Santana" a oeste, e "CA078 - Nascente do Potengi" a leste. A amostragem foi realizada por meio de métodos de busca visual, armadilhas de interceptação e queda, espécimes resgatados durante atividades de supressão vegetal em projetos de energia eólica, encontros ocasionais e registros de terceiros. Registramos 19 espécies de anfíbios e 53 espécies de répteis (23 lagartos, 24 serpentes, cinco anfisbênias e um quelônio). Cerca de metade das espécies registradas tem distribuição inteiramente ou predominantemente na Caatinga. A cadeia serrana amostrada neste estudo abriga praticamente todas as espécies encontradas nas planícies próximas da depressão sertaneja do RN, além de algumas espécies relevantes com distribuição relictual na Caatinga, destacando a importância dessas áreas de altitude para a conservação da herpetofauna da Caatinga.

ABSTRACT

This work provides a structural analysis of small-scale 3D-printed wind turbine ribs subjected to compression. The ribs were manufactured according to NACA 23015 and NACA 633618 geometries, with polylactic acid (PLA) and polylactic acid with carbon fiber additives (CF-PLA). In addition, holes were manufactured into the sample bodies by either 3D printing or drilling for being compared with solid samples. The compression testing was performed by following the ASTM 695D standard, whereas the beginning and propagation of delamination were assessed with the ASTM 5528 standard. Experimental results revealed that 3D-printed built-in holes provided higher compression strength, hence higher structural efficiency, than the drilled samples. Significant improvement by adding carbon fiber additives into the PLA resin system in comparison to raw PLA was detected for at least one of the studied airfoil profiles. NACA geometries also represented a key parameter for avoiding stress concentration areas, as the FEM modeling supported. However, in damaged areas, fracture mechanisms were observed such as bead-bridging, which is a key parameter in reinforcing and consolidating the specimen bodies. Working in better interphase bonding and different additives between beads and layers is highly suggested for future studies.

ABSTRACT

Watermelon is a crop highly dependent on bees for pollination, and environmental conditions are some of the most important factors affecting bee foraging. In this study, we analyze the effect of environmental conditions on the behavior of the most common bees visiting flowers of watermelon crops in Panama. We recorded the number of visits, visit duration, and the corresponding environmental conditions during the visits. Environmental conditions affected the observed groups of bees differently: honey bee visit proportion was remarkably higher at low temperatures, solar radiation, wind speed, and high relative humidity, early in the morning when they made about 90% of their flower visits. The other observed bees showed a more homogenous behavior during the day, with peaks representing about 25-35% of the daily visits. Visit number showed a correlation with temperature for all the most common bees except Augochloropsis spp., with solar radiation for A. mellifera and Lasioglossum spp., with humidity for all except Lasioglossum spp., and with wind speed for all of the analyzed bees. Visit durations were remarkably longer in N. perilampoides early on the day. At the same time, the rest of the bees showed less pronounced duration peaks, reaching their maximum at intermediate values of environmental conditions. Visit duration on honeybees did not correlate with environmental factors, but it did for most other bees. Environmental conditions showed a strong effect on the bee foraging behavior, with each group of bees concentrating their activities in favorable conditions depending on their biology, establishing their daily foraging patterns.

BACKGROUND: The search for attractive baits that may facilitate the capture of haematophagous insects has been epidemiologically relevant. Sand flies use chemical cues in different phases of their life cycles to find carbohydrate meals, mates, blood meals and oviposition sites. Few studies have related the behaviours of sand flies with volatile compounds that can influence their life cycles. Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that 1-hexanol released on filter paper is a good attractant for the sand fly Nyssomyia neivai, which is suspected in the transmission of the aetiologic agent of American cutaneous leishmaniasis. METHODS: In this study, we developed two release systems to modulated 1-hexanol release: system 1 contained gellan gum and pectin (4:1 ratio), 3% aluminium chloride and 1% glutaraldehyde; system 2 contained: gellan gum and pectin (4:1 ratio) and 3% aluminium chloride. After addition of 1-hexanol to each release system, trials were performed in a wind tunnel with Ny. neivai males and females (unfed, blood-fed and gravid) to evaluate activation and attraction responses. RESULTS: Males and unfed females showed the same response pattern to the systems. For both systems, the males and unfed females of the sand flies showed an activation response up to 24 h. The number of responsive gravid females was lower than unfed females for both systems. The blood-fed females showed no responses in any of the release systems. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that the state of the females (unfed, fed and gravid) can interfere with the sand fly responses to volatile compounds. Additionally, both systems evaluated with the compound showed effectiveness for sand fly attraction.

Due to their location in tropical latitudes, mangrove forests are susceptible to the impact of hurricanes and can be vastly damaged by their high-speed winds. Given the logistic difficulties regarding field surveys in mangroves, remote sensing approaches have been considered a reliable alternative. We quantified trends in damage and early signs of canopy recovery in a fringe Rhizophora mangle area of Marismas Nacionales, Mexico, following the landfall of Hurricane Willa in October 2018. We monitored (2016-2021) broad canopy defoliation using 21 vegetation indices (VI) from the Google Earth Engine tool (GEE). We also mapped a detailed canopy fragmentation and developed digital surface models (DSM) during five study periods (2018-2021) with a consumer-grade unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over an area of 100 ha. Based on optical data from the GEE time series, results indicated an abrupt decline in the overall mangrove canopy. The VARI index was the most reliable VI for the mangrove canopy classification from a standard RGB sensor. The impact of the hurricane caused an overall canopy defoliation of 79%. The series of UAV orthomosaics indicate a gradual recovery in the mangrove canopy, while the linear model predicts at least 8.5 years to reach pre-impact mangrove cover conditions. However, the sequence of DSM estimates that the vertical canopy configuration will require a longer time to achieve its original structure.

ABSTRACT

Pannexin 1 (Panx1) is involved in the spinal central sensitization process in rats with neuropathic pain, but its interaction with well-known, pain-related, ligand-dependent receptors, such as NMDA receptors (NMDAR) and P2X7 purinoceptors (P2X7R), remains largely unexplored. Here, we studied whether NMDAR- and P2X7R-dependent nociceptive signaling in neuropathic rats require the activation of Panx1 channels to generate spinal central sensitization, as assessed by behavioral (mechanical hyperalgesia) and electrophysiological (C-reflex wind-up potentiation) indexes. Administration of either a selective NMDAR agonist i.t. (NMDA, 2 mM) or a P2X7R agonist (BzATP, 150 µM) significantly increased both the mechanical hyperalgesia and the C-reflex wind-up potentiation, effects that were rapidly reversed (minutes) by i.t. administration of a selective pannexin 1 antagonist (10panx peptide, 300 µM), with the scores even reaching values of rats without neuropathy. Accordingly, 300 µM 10panx completely prevented the effects of NMDA and BzATP administered 1 h later, on mechanical hyperalgesia and C-reflex wind-up potentiation. Confocal immunofluorescence imaging revealed coexpression of Panx1 with NeuN protein in intrinsic dorsal horn neurons of neuropathic rats. The results indicate that both NMDAR- and P2X7R-mediated increases in mechanical hyperalgesia and C-reflex wind-up potentiation require neuronal Panx1 channel activation to initiate and maintain nociceptive signaling in neuropathic rats.
