ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to elucidate the long-term impact of prelingual deafness and elderly age at cochlear implantation on cochlear implant (CI) programming parameters and CI thresholds METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent cochlear implantation less than 5 years (Prelingual group) and equal and more than 18 years in our institute. The latter group was further divided into Adult and Elderly groups according to whether the patient was younger or older than 65 at implantation. From 152, 69, and 55 patients in the Prelingual, Adult, and Elderly groups, 242, 92, and 58 ears were included. We compared CI thresholds and CI programming parameters, including impedances, T/C levels, and dynamic ranges for 8 years after implantation between the Prelingual, Adult, and Elderly groups. RESULTS: The Prelingual group showed consistently lower CI thresholds than the Adult and Elderly groups during the postoperative 2-8 years, but no difference was detected between the Elderly and Adult groups, except at the postoperative 4 years. The elderly group's CI thresholds did not deteriorate until postoperative 8 years. The Prelingual group showed consistently larger T/C levels (minimum/maximum current strength from CI), especially C levels, than the other two groups. At the same time, there was no significant difference between the Elderly and Adult groups except for smaller dynamic ranges in the Elderly group until postoperative 2 years. These results in the CI programming parameters might explain the lower CI thresholds in the Prelingual group than in the other groups. Focusing on CI maps 1 and 3 years after implantation, the strength of the T/C levels was similar for all channels in the Prelingual group, but the Adult and Elderly groups showed larger electrical stimuli in channels responsible for the middle frequencies than those for the lower or higher frequencies. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest a significant influence of prelingual deafness but less impact of elderly age at implantation on long-term CI programming parameters and CI thresholds. The larger C levels and lower CI thresholds in the Prelingual group than in the Adult and Elderly groups implied that CI children with prelingual deafness tolerate and prefer larger CI stimuli, which may reflect the CI-dependent development of their auditory system before the critical period. No age-related reduction in hearing thresholds was observed in the Elderly group, probably because the CI compensates for age-related dysfunction of the peripheral auditory system.

ABSTRACT

Aging is the basis of neurodegeneration and dementia that affects each endemic in the body. Normal aging in the brain is associated with progressive slowdown and disruptions in various abilities such as motor ability, cognitive impairment, decreasing information processing speed, attention, and memory. With the aggravation of global aging, more research focuses on brain changes in the elderly adult. The graph theory, in combination with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), makes it possible to evaluate the brain network functional connectivity patterns in different conditions with brain modeling. We have evaluated the brain network communication model changes in three different age groups (including 8 to 15 years, 25 to 35 years, and 45 to 75 years) in lifespan pilot data from the human connectome project (HCP). Initially, Pearson correlation-based connectivity networks were calculated and thresholded. Then, network characteristics were compared between the three age groups by calculating the global and local graph measures. In the resting state brain network, we observed decreasing global efficiency and increasing transitivity with age. Also, brain regions, including the amygdala, putamen, hippocampus, precuneus, inferior temporal gyrus, anterior cingulate gyrus, and middle temporal gyrus, were selected as the most affected brain areas with age through statistical tests and machine learning methods. Using feature selection methods, including Fisher score and Kruskal-Wallis, we were able to classify three age groups using SVM, KNN, and decision-tree classifier. The best classification accuracy is in the combination of Fisher score and decision tree classifier obtained, which was 82.2%. Thus, by examining the measures of functional connectivity using graph theory, we will be able to explore normal age-related changes in the human brain, which can be used as a tool to monitor health with age.

ABSTRACT

This article defines self-perceptions of aging (SPA) as individuals' perceptions, expectations, and experiences regarding their own process of growing old(er). As such, SPA are considered a critically important element of the aging self. Furthermore, the authors present a heuristic model that positions adults' SPA within a lifespan developmental and cultural-societal context and elaborates distal and proximal antecedents, process modes, and developmental outcomes. The remainder of the article summarizes recent empirical findings and discusses future challenges and directions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Static stretching has been demonstrated to improve the health of older adults. One of its goals is to decrease passive stiffness of the muscle-tendon unit (MTU) and/or muscles. Decreased passive stiffness in older adults could increase the range of motion and movement efficiency. Herein, we conducted a meta-analysis of the acute effects of static stretching on passive stiffness in older adults as well as a meta-analysis of differences in these effects between older and young adults. BACKGROUND: PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO were searched for studies published before June 28, 2023. Manual searches were performed to identify additional studies. All included studies were critically reviewed by five authors. Meta-analyses of muscle and tendon injuries were performed using a random effect model. Of 4643 identified studies, 6 studies were included in the systematic review. RESULTS: The main meta-analysis in older adults showed that static stretching could decrease the passive stiffness of the MTU or muscles (effect size, 0.55; 95 % confidence interval, 0.27 to 0.84; p < 0.01; and I2 = 0.0 %). Moreover, for the comparison between young and old adults, three studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results revealed no significant difference in the effects of static stretching interventions on stiffness between older and young adults (effect size, 0.136; 95 % confidence interval, -0.301 to 0.5738; p = 0.541; and I2 = 17.4 %). Static stretching could decrease the passive stiffness of the MTU and/or muscles in older adults to a small magnitude, and the effects were comparable between older and young adults.

ABSTRACT

We examined how physical pain impacts the developmental construct of Awareness of Age-Related Change (AARC-gains and AARC-losses) and, in turn, how AARC mediates and moderates the association between pain and subsequent physical activity. We used longitudinal data from 434 participants of the UK PROTECT Study (mean age = 65.5 years; SD = 6.94 years). We found that pain in 2019 predicted higher AARC-losses (ß = .07; p = .036) and less physical activity (ß = -.13; p-value = .001) in 2020. Additionally, we found that AARC-losses partially mediated, but did not moderate, the association of pain in 2019 and physical activity in 2020. AARC-losses may explain physical inactivity in middle-aged and older adults experiencing pain. Incorporating developmental constructs such as AARC into theories and empirical studies on pain and pain management may be necessary to more fully capture people's responses to pain.

ABSTRACT

Conventional dental age estimation relies on destructive methods such as sectioning and staining, which are unpreferable when the tooth is required for evidential or archeological preservation. MicroCT is a non-destructive, high-resolution imaging technique that allows for accurate morphometrical measurement. Although microCT technology has been applied in a variety of dental studies, studies focusing on dental age-related change and dental age estimation based on microCT imaging remain lacking. Based on the question: "How has microCT technology been applied in studying human age-related tooth morphological change and dental age estimation studies?", the authors conducted a scoping review in accordance with the Arksey and O'Malley (2005) and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A literature search using five major scientific databases identified 452 articles, with 11 full-text articles being eligible to be included in the scoping review. Furthermore, 6 out of the 11 studies performed dental age estimation modeling. An overview of the parameters used in the selected articles revealed a variety of tooth characteristics, such as pulp cavity to whole tooth volume ratio, secondary dentin, as well as the diameter of root canal orifice. The findings of this scoping review highlight the extent microCT is used in studying dental age-related changes, as well as the effectiveness of microCT in dental age estimation studies. This review serves as a guide for future forensic odontology age estimation studies.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To examine inherent differences adjusted for age and clinical score in whole-body sagittal (WBS) alignment involving the lower extremities between Asians and Caucasians, and to determine the relationship between age and WBS parameters by race and sex. METHODS: A total of 317 individuals consisting of 206 Asians and 111 Caucasians participated. WBS parameters including C2-7 lordotic angle, lower lumbar lordosis (lower LL, L4-S), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic thickness, knee flexion (KF), sagittal vertical axis (SVA), and T1 pelvic angle (TPA) were evaluated radiologically. Propensity score-matching adjustments for age and the Oswestry Disability Index scores for comparative analysis between the two race cohorts and correlation analysis between age and WBS parameters for all subjects by race and sex were conducted. RESULTS: The comparative analysis included 136 subjects (age: Asians 41.1 ± 13.5, Caucasians 42.3 ± 16.2 years, p = 0.936). Racial differences in WBS parameters were observed in C2-7 lordotic angle (-1.8 ± 12.3 vs. 6.3 ± 12.2 degrees, p = 0.001), and lower LL (34.0 ± 6.6 vs. 38.0 ± 6.1 degrees, p < .001). In correlation analysis with age, moderate or more significant correlations with age were found in KF for all groups, and in SVA and TPA for females of both racial groups. Age-related changes in pelvic parameters of PI and pelvic thickness were more significant in Caucasian females. CONCLUSION: Analysis of the correlation between age and WBS parameters suggested that age-related WBS changes vary between races and should be considered during corrective spinal surgery.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by developmental and intellectual disability, broadening of thumbs and halluces, and characteristic facial features. Pathogenic variants in CREBBP lead to RSTS type 1 (RSTS1) and in EP300 lead to RSTS type 2 (RSTS2). Individuals with RSTS can demonstrate a variety of behavioral and neuropsychiatric challenges, including anxiety, hyperactivity/inattention, self-injury, repetitive behaviors, and aggression. Behavioral challenges are consistently reported as one of the primary factors impacting quality of life. Despite the high prevalence and morbidity of behavioral and neuropsychiatric features of RSTS, a paucity of data exists regarding its natural history. Methods: To better understand the neurocognitive and behavioral challenges faced by individuals with RSTS, 71 caregivers of individuals with RSTS, ranging in age from one to 61 years, completed four questionnaires measuring obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)-like symptoms, anxiety, challenging behaviors, and adaptive behavior and living skills. Results: Results revealed a high prevalence of neuropsychiatric and behavioral challenges across ages. We found specific challenging behaviors were worse in school age individuals. Scaled adaptive behavior and living skill scores differed across ages with an increased gap between typically developing peers becoming more apparent at older ages. Between types, individuals with RSTS2 had better adaptive behavior and living skills and less stereotypic behaviors but higher social phobia than individuals with RSTS1. Further, female individuals with RSTS1 appear to have increased hyperactivity. However, both groups had impairments in adaptive functioning compared to typically developing peers. Discussion: Our findings support and expand previous reports of a high prevalence of neuropsychiatric and behavioral challenges in individuals with RSTS. However, we are the first to report differences between types of RSTS. Further, age-related differences were seen with higher challenging behaviors within school-age individuals, which may improve over time, and lower adaptive behavioral skills compared to normative scales. Anticipation of these potential differential challenges across age is vital for proactive management for individuals with RSTS. Our study underscores the importance of enacting neuropsychiatric and behavioral screening earlier in childhood so appropriate management can be implemented. However, further longitudinal studies in larger cohorts are needed to understand better how behavioral and neuropsychiatric characteristics of RSTS evolve over the lifespan and differentially affect subpopulation groups.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in the involvement of whole-body compensatory alignment in different conditions of spinopelvic sagittal balance (compensated/decompensated). METHODS: We enrolled 330 individuals who underwent medical checkups and divided them according to sagittal vertical axis (SVA): for the compensated group, this was <4 cm, (group C) and for the decompensated group, it was ≥4 cm, (group D). The correlation between the lack of ideal lumbar lordosis (iLL), which was calculated by using the Schwab formula, and the compensatory radiographic parameters in each group was analyzed. The threshold value of knee flexion (KF) angle, which indicated spinopelvic sagittal imbalance (SVA ≥ 4), was determined by a ROC-curve analysis. RESULTS: The correlation analysis of the lack of iLL and each compensatory parameter showed a strong correlation for pelvic tilt (PT) (r = -0.723), and a weak correlation for thoracic kyphosis (TK) (r = 275) in Group C. In Group D, the correlations were strong for PT (r = -0.796), and moderate for TK (r = 0.462) and KF (r = -0.415). The optimal cutoff value for the KF angle was determined to be 8.4 degrees (sensitivity 89%, specificity 46%). CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows differences between compensated/decompensated spinopelvic sagittal balance in the correlation strength between lack of iLL and whole-body compensatory parameters.

STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort radiographic study. OBJECTIVE: To determine the age- and gender-related normative values and correlation of cervical sagittal parameters in asymptomatic Chinese adults, and to explore the changes and compensating mechanisms across different age groups. METHODS: The asymptomatic subjects were divided into 6 groups according to age and then one-way analysis of variance was used to compare the multiple sets of cervical sagittal parameters among the different age groups. Independent t-tests were performed to compare the sagittal parameters among different gender and different cervical spine alignments. Relationships between each parameter were tested by Pearson's correlation. Linear regression analysis based on T1 slope (T1S) and C2 slope (C2S) was used to provide an equation to predict normal cervical alignment. RESULTS: Mean values of each cervical sagittal parameter were presented based on age and gender. There were positive correlations between age and cervical lordosis (CL) (r = -.278, P < .001), T1S (r = .271, P < .001), cervical sagittal vertical axis (cSVA) (r = .218, P < .001), C2-C4 Cobb angle (r = -.283, P < .001), horacic inlet angle (TIA) (r = .443, P < .001), and neck tilt (NT) (r = .354, P < .001). Older groups (aged >50 years) had greater T1 Slope, C2S, and TIA. The C2-C4 Cobb angle maintained a steadily increasing trend and significantly increased in the older adult groups (P < .05), while the C5-C7 Cobb angle was relatively constant. Mean values of parameters were larger in males (P > .05). Linear regression analysis indicated a strong association between T1S and CL (R2 = .551, standard error 1.16°), T1S and C5-7 (R2 = .372; P < .001), and C2S and C2-4 (R2 = .309; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Normative values of cervical sagittal parameters vary by age and sex. The CL, cSVA, and T1S, C2-4 Cobb angle changed with increasing age, and it can influence the recruitment of compensation mechanism. Normative CL of Chinese adults was predicted by the equation CL = T1S-14.7° ± 1.2°, which could serve as a reference when planning for cervical surgery.

OBJECTIVE: We explored which factors are associated with subjective age (SA), i.e. feeling younger, the same as, or older than one's chronological age, and whether these factors differ between men and women and between two age sub-groups. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study using qualitative and quantitative data for 1457 individuals (mean age= 67.2 years). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Participants reported how old they feel they are and provided comments in relation to their SA judgments. RESULTS: By using content analysis participants' comments were assigned to 13 categories, grouped into three higher-order categories (antecedents of age-related thoughts, mental processes, and issues when measuring subjective age). SA may result from the interaction between factors that increase or decrease age-related thoughts and mental processes that individuals use to interpret age-related changes. Chi-squared tests show that individuals reporting an older SA are more likely to experience significant negative changes and to engage in negative age-related thoughts than individuals reporting an age-congruent SA or a younger SA. Women experience a more negative SA and more age-salient events than men. CONCLUSION: Individuals reporting an older SA may benefit from interventions promoting adaptation to negative age-related changes. There is the need to eradicate negative societal views of older women.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the developmental pattern of swing speed in youth baseball players between 6 and 14 years old. A total of 1213 baseball players performed toss batting. Swing speed was measured with a specialized accelerometer. In addition, 618 of the 1213 players were measured for total fat free mass by using Inbody770. In study1, Regression analysis was performed on the relationship between chronological age or height and swing speed, and the extreme values were calculated. Then, an allometric equation based on height was also used to estimate the relative growth of swing speed and total fat free mass and to compare the difference of relative growth patterns between swing speed and total fat free mass in study2. Swing speed was strongly related to both chronological age and height, with cubic regression for the relationship with chronological age and linear for the relationship with height. The regression equation obtained for chronological age was solved and found that developmental rate was maximal at approximately 10.25 years old. Allometric analysis showed that the developmental pattern of swing speed differed from that of fat free mass, with a temporary decline in developmental rate from 153.6 cm to 160.9 cm. Based on the results of this study, further research in youth baseball players would be expected to identify the factors causing sluggish development of swing speed as well as to develop an exercise program for improving batting ability.

ABSTRACT

An aging workforce and the increasing value placed on employees' proactivity are two important features of current workplaces. We address the extent to which this proactivity is affected by age and aging. The study has two objectives. First, it aims to validate the concept of awareness of age-related change (AARC) in the Chinese context. Second, it compares the explanatory power of AARC with that of chronological age and subjective age in predicting three types of proactivity: task proactivity, development proactivity and organization proactivity. We used the ten-item AARC instrument in a survey of teachers (n = 421, mean age = 41.0) in China, and validated its content by comparing the responses of a subsample of these teachers (n = 33, mean age = 42.5) to questions asked in a semi-structured interview. This confirmed the validity of the instrument's content, and its applicability beyond North America and Europe, in a Chinese context. We then show that awareness of positive and negative age-related changes (AARC-Gains and AARC-Losses) are, respectively, positively and negatively associated with the three types of proactivity, and that they are better predictors than chronological age and subjective age. The research adds weight to challenges to negative age stereotyping--that older employees are set in their ways and less proactive--and to claims about the value of AARC for measuring aging, by showing that this factor can predict outcomes beyond health and the concerns of older adults.

Background: Awareness of aging brings to light one's own perceived behavioral, physical, and cognitive changes associated with getting older. Personality and physical illness are each related to two components of awareness of aging: attitudes toward own aging (ATOA), and awareness of age-related changes (AARC). Here, we move beyond main effects to examine how personality and arthritis interact with respect to awareness of aging. Materials and Methods: 296 participants (M age = 64.67, SD = 4.36, Range = 60-90 years, 49.7% women) completed online self-report questionnaires of personality, arthritis, ATOA, and AARC gains and losses. Results: We ran three hierarchical multiple regression models to test how personality traits and arthritis interacted to predict ATOA, AARC gains, and AARC losses, respectively. Higher extraversion was related to positive ATOA, and higher openness was related to positive ATOA and more AARC gains. Higher neuroticism was related to negative ATOA, more AARC losses, and less AARC gains. We found a main effect for arthritis, where those with arthritis reported more AARC losses. Lastly, we found a significant interaction between arthritis and agreeableness when predicting AARC gains. Among those with low agreeableness, people with arthritis reported significantly more AARC gains compared to those without arthritis. Conclusion: Personality and arthritis are each important for awareness of aging. Overall, our study suggests that for those with arthritis, it is especially important to consider behavioral and cognitive factors related to agreeableness, as they may be important means of promoting positive views on aging.

Over the last decades, educational programs involving age simulation suits (ASS) emerged with the ambition to further the understanding of age-related loss experiences, enhance empathy and reduce negative attitudes toward older adults in healthcare settings and in younger age groups at large. However, the impact of such "instant aging" interventions on individuals' personal views on aging have not been studied yet. The aim of the current study is to address possible effects of ASS interventions on multiple outcomes related to views on aging, i.e., aging-related cognitions (i.e., expectations regarding social losses), awareness of age-related change (AARC) and age stereotypes. Moreover, we explore effects on broader constructs with relevance to aging, i.e., perceived obsolescence, risk perceptions, as well as desired support through technology. In a within-subjects design, N = 40 participants (M = 61.4 years, SD = 6.16) went through a series of established geriatric assessments (i.e., Timed up and Go) with and without an ASS. Views on aging constructs were assessed in standardized questionnaires before and after the ASS intervention. Changes in aging-related cognitions were observed, with more negative expectations regarding social integration and continuous development after wearing the ASS. AARC and age stereotypes did not change from pre- to post-assessment, but participants reported an increased susceptibility to age-associated impairments and stronger feelings of obsolescence. Those participants who exhibited higher difficulties in geriatric assessments while wearing the suit reported higher openness to be supported by intelligent assistive devices or robots afterwards. We conclude that ASS interventions should only be combined with education on losses and gains during the aging process to prevent negative effects on individual views on aging. On the other hand, potentials regarding technology acceptance and formation of intentions to engage in prevention and health behaviors among middle-aged to young-old adults are discussed.

We analyzed 400 deaths that occurred in the bathtub during a 10-year period in the central area of Kanagawa prefecture in Japan. There were 72 (18%) medico-legal autopsy cases. The average age at death was 76.4 ± 11.9 years. Drowning (n = 21, 70.8%) was the most common cause of death in the 72 autopsy cases. The study examined the bodies of 40 cases within a postmortem interval of 3 days. The mean age of the 40 cases of sudden death during bathing was 68.6 ± 12.5 years. Results revealed cardiac hypertrophy in 12 cases (30%), lipofuscin deposition in 39 cases (97.5%), basophilic degeneration in 12 cases (30%), anisocytosis of the nucleus of myocardial cells in 18 cases (45%), perivascular fibrosis in 17 cases (42.5%), amyloid deposits in 1 case, and aortic valve calcification in 1 case. The hearts of control subjects who had lived to 20-99 years were also examined; the frequency of each change was higher in people older than 70 years. There was no statistically significant difference in age-related cardio-pathological changes between cases of sudden death during bathing in people in their 70s and controls in their 70s. It can be concluded that this age-related histopathological index is not related to sudden death during bathing. A large number of elderly people, including those without heart disease, have died during bathing. Preventive measures against sudden death during bathing are strongly recommended, e.g., elderly people should not be left totally unsupervised while they bathe.

ABSTRACT

The study aimed to (1) investigate the reliability and usefulness of a proposed angular analysis during a modified sit-and-reach (MSR) test, and (2) compare the proposed MSR angular analysis and the commonly used MSR distance to verify the influence of the anthropometric characteristics in preschoolers. 194 preschoolers participated in the study. Before testing, the anthropometric characteristics were collected. Each participant performed the MSR test twice. The MSR distance score was obtained from the starting point to the reaching point, while the MSR angle score was calculated according to the approximate hip flexion angle. Both the relative and absolute reliability were good for the angular analysis during an MSR test in preschoolers (ICC ranging from 0.82 to 0.91, CV% ranging from 8.21 to 9.40). The angular analysis demonstrated good usefulness, with a lower typical error than the smallest worthwhile change in 3- and 5-year-old groups. The MSR angle scores could eliminate the concern of the influence of anthropometric characteristics, while MSR distance and anthropometric characteristics (i.e., sitting height and arm length) were found to be weakly correlated. In conclusion, the angular analysis when performing the MSR test is reliable and appears to eliminate the concern regarding the limb length bias.

ABSTRACT

Lacunar-canalicular (LC) permeability involves the passage of fluids, nutrients, oxygen, ions, and signalling molecules through bone tissue, facilitating the maintenance of bone vitality and function and responses to various physiological conditions and diseases. LC permeability and fluid flow-shear stress/drag force play important roles in mechanotransduction in bone tissue by inducing mechanical stimuli in osteocytes, modulating cellular functions, and determining bone adaptation. Alterations in LC structure may therefore influence the fluid flow pattern through the LC network, thereby affecting the ability of osteocytes to sense and translate mechanical signals and possibly contributing to bone remodelling. Several bone-health conditions are associated with changes in LC structure and function and may affect mechanotransduction and responses, although the mechanisms underlying these associations are still not fully understood. In this review, recent studies of LC networks, their formation and transfer mechanical stimuli, and changes in structure, functional permeability, and mechanotransduction that result from age, pathology, and mechanical loading are discussed. Additionally, applications of vibration and low-intensity pulsed ultrasound in bone healthcare and regeneration fields are also presented.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recent neuroimaging studies revealed dysregulated neurodevelopmental, or/and neurodegenerative trajectories of both structural and functional connections in schizophrenia. However, how the alterations in the brain's structural connectivity lead to dynamic function changes in schizophrenia with age remains poorly understood. METHODS: Combining structural magnetic resonance imaging and a network control theory approach, the white matter network controllability metric (average controllability) was mapped from age 16 to 60 years in 175 drug-naïve schizophrenia patients and 155 matched healthy controls. RESULTS: Compared with controls, the schizophrenia patients demonstrated the lack of age-related decrease on average controllability of default mode network (DMN), as well as the right precuneus (a hub region of DMN), suggesting abnormal maturational development process in schizophrenia. Interestingly, the schizophrenia patients demonstrated an accelerated age-related decline of average controllability in the subcortical network, supporting the neurodegenerative model. In addition, compared with controls, the lack of age-related increase on average controllability of the left inferior parietal gyrus in schizophrenia patients also suggested a different pathway of brain development. CONCLUSIONS: By applying the control theory approach, the present study revealed age-related changes in the ability of white matter pathways to control functional activity states in schizophrenia. The findings supported both the developmental and degenerative hypotheses of schizophrenia, and suggested a particularly high vulnerability of the DMN and subcortical network possibly reflecting an illness-related early marker for the disorder.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The association of sleep habits with "advancing age among older adults" is not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to examine the association of sleep habits with advancing age among community-dwelling older adults in Japan. METHODS: A total of 18,005 older people (mean age: 73.2 ± 6.0 years; 8,070 men and 9,935 women) from the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology Study of Geriatric Syndromes were analyzed. Participants were asked in face-to-face interviews about the times they usually go to bed, fall asleep, wake-up, and get up. The amount of time spent in bed and self-reported sleep duration were then calculated from the differences between these times. As other parameters, the subjects were also asked about sleep latency, time spent in bed after waking up, number of nocturnal awakenings, and duration of napping in a typical day. RESULTS: The results of the Jonckheere-Terpstra test showed that all sleep parameters shifted to an earlier time (going to bed, falling asleep, waking up, and getting out of bed), longer duration (sleep duration, time spent in bed, sleep latency, time spent in bed after waking up, and napping), or more nocturnal awakenings with advancing age (all p < 0.01). Among the men, the time of waking up was not significantly associated with age, while among the women, the time of getting up was not significantly associated with age. CONCLUSION: These results from a large cohort show the age-related trends of sleep habits in community-dwelling older adults in Japan. Our results revealed that a longer duration and earlier timing of sleep are associated with advancing age.
